Are GTOs telling the best story?

Once upon a time…! Those four words conjure up a time long ago when all we seemed to need was a good story and all seemed well with the world But as Wendy Hartley-Scarff, chief executive of the Association of Group Travel Organisers (AGTO), explains, GTOs are in the business of telling stories – to attract people on to their trips

For readers of a certain age, you may very well remember those far off days, long before the internet, Google and Trip Advisor, when we found out about places to visit, either from personal recommendation, or perhaps from national newspapers, the BBC’s Holiday, or ‘ITV’s ‘Wish You Were Here?‘ Perhaps we glanced through holiday brochures If we were very fortunate, we would find ourselves sitting in the family car as our parents headed over the Channel to exotic Calais and beyond Today, everything and anything we need to

know about the world is available at the click of a mouse, or a tap on our phones or tablets. Except that it’s not Talking with AGTO members over these last few years I’ve found myself learning more and more about the group travel industry. The bigger picture I get, but the finer points of organising a trip, and some of the pitfalls faced by GTOs would normally pass me by. So I really enjoy hearing more about all of this from our members One topic that seems to crop up time and time again relates to the lack of first-hand information about the actual group experience Visitor attractions and destinations tell you what you need to know about making a visit Then there are many photos posted on Facebook, Instagram and elsewhere showing lots of smiling people enjoying themselves It’s all wonderful stuff. But where’s the bit that explains what happened during the trip, did the planned itinerary work, what should other groups look out for, that sort of thing?

It’s all about spreading the word for the benefit of the whole group travel sector. But reading some of these reports, which usually explain where the trip went and what was seen, I wonder if, collectively, we’re missing a trick. The experience that each GTO gains on any trip, whether it’s a day out or a touring holiday, is invaluable If the group leader, or another member of the group, is writing a report that is going to be seen by other GTOs, perhaps in a magazine, or on TripAdvisor, or Facebook, or even an online blog, I can see real benefits in including a few words about worked what and what other tour planners need to keep an eye on

The continuing, amazing adventures of Pauline & Ken, on their travels

Having had a less-thansatisfactory visit, in August 2021, to Five Lakes hotel resort in Essex, due to an appalling staff situation (as much due to poor management as staff shortages) we said ‘ never again’ Then, just three weeks afterwards, we heard that Potters of Hopton, Norfolk had purchased the resort. Good move as the hotel itself is a comfy 4 star set in 320 acres of Essex countryside and has an 18 hole 6767 yard golf course In the hotel there is a swimming pool, a spa and a gym It was already offering well-attended golf and spa weekends. We decided therefore that instead of our annual winter break to Warners, we would go back and see what Potter’s had managed to achieve Thankfully the staffing situation has been well

and truly solved Everyone was so helpful It was quick efficient service with a smile.

Potters have now built a large extension to the hotel housing a 650 seat theatre, craft /quiet room, bar and lounge and a sports area Outside there is also a rifle range and archery. The only downside for us, and many others going as individuals, is that the bowls lanes – and bowls is a niche market

that Potters have captured – were fully booked from 9am – 9pm for an indoors bowls pro coaching package. In fact every mid-week throughout January to May is the same or a Bowls Tournament. Sadly that meant the only time leisure bowlers, some of whom had brought their own bowls and shoes, were able to play was on arrival day before the evening meal or on the Thursday after the presentations from 5 30pm Not very satisfactory and many complaints were heard However it is early days and what Potters have achieved in such a short time is astonishing What I really hope is that Potters will appreciate that they need to build, as soon as possible, a separate area or building just for these indoor bowls courses and tournaments and leave the lanes in the sports area for bookings on the day for leisure users Hopton has

two links upstairs for leisure users but unfortunately they too can get booked out as so many bowling clubs book group breaks. Personally I think both sites need a few more lanes that can’t be used other than for casual turn up and book on the day or night before use. A few of us did manage an hour after the presentations and were kindly given a few tips from former International bowler Andy Thompson

A good thing about Five Lakes is that all the accommodation is in hotel rooms. At Hopton, the vast majority of accommodation is in chalets, some a little way from the facilities. Obviously the chalet accommodation is cheaper but we did find when we last went that in some chalets the walls are very thin and snores and conversation from the adjoining chalet can intrude upon your personal space At Five Lakes even the Village accommodation is in two storey brick-built blocks of several flats, some with balconies or patios At the hotel, coat racks and umbrella stands are located at the entrance to the three restaurants so those coming in from these outside accommodation

blocks have somewhere to hang their coats There are plenty of places just to sit and chill. Our favourite was the Lake View lounge on the first floor of the hotel All drinks are ordered and then bought to your table, including in the theatre, from a point just outside the theatre entrance.

If you want a walk there is a nice one between separate sections of the golf course up to a church (closed), which takes about 30 minutes. For a longer walk you can continue past a farm and then to a ruined monastery. That would take probably two hours there and back

Many of the older buildings are pargetered, and the tourist office can help with proving a guided walking tour

Not the main one as that was being refurbished, but two smaller ones As Ken and I had just celebrated our birthdays (a month apart) and we had driven Philip to Norwich on the Friday, to allow Jayne to come in their own car after work, he treated us to a lunch at The Ivy before going to practice for the Saturday and Sunday services. We then spent a very pleasant afternoon and again in the morning on Saturday wandering around the City. In fact as the food had been so good we treated

After the Sunday morning service in the Cathedral Ken and I headed for the East Anglia Transport Museum near Lowestoft A wet and damp day so it was unfortunate that on the Sunday there was a marathon in Norwich which closed all the roads in and around the city, which meant we had a twentyminute walk in the rain back to our hotel to collect the car However Ken enjoyed himself once we got there, and despite the rain, we managed to keep mostly dry.

There is so much to do in Norwich and the surrounding area that I am determined at some point to have a group City break there at the time of year when we can have a boat trip in the Broads area, something we had enjoyed on an AGTO AGM weekend a few years ago

We have a great selection of Model Railways featuring including N, O, double O gauge and gauge 1 layouts from across the country, displayed in the Locomotive Maintenance Shed at Shef eld Park Station and the Carriage and Wagon Workshop at Horsted Keynes Station, usually not open to the public.

Alongside the displays will be trade stands offering a variety of modelling products including engines, rolling stock, and local produce. You can also visit our railway shop at Shef eld Park where we have a great selection of models, accessories and other products available from beginners sets to full layouts.

We will also be running a steam hauled service from Shef eld Park to East Grinstead Stations all weekend.

Brittany, where Mussels grow on “trees”

As a seasoned traveler, I have always found road trips to be the most exhilarating way to explore new places. And when it comes to France, the possibilities are endless. So when the opportunity arose to embark on a six-day road trip through the northern region of Brittany , I jumped at the chance. From Mont-Saint-Michel to Saint-Brieuc bay , this stretch of coastline is nothing short of spectacular .

Our journey began at the world-renowned Mont-Saint-Michel, an island commune located in Normandy, France. The stunning Gothic architecture of the abbey loomed before us as we made our way across the causeway to the island Mont-Saint-Michel is a UNESCO World Heritage site and has been attracting visitors for centuries The island has a fascinating history, and the abbey at the top of the hill is a masterpiece of medieval engineering. The views from the top are simply breathtaking, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape

The abbey of Mont-Saint-Michel is a true architectural marvel It was built over a period of several centuries, and the result is a stunning example of Gothic architecture. The abbey's design was influenced by the Romanesque style, which is characterized by rounded arches and thick walls The main attraction of the abbey is the church at the top, which is dedicated to the archangel Saint Michael. The church is a masterpiece of medieval architecture, and the intricate carvings and stained glass windows are truly breathtaking. It is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in history or architecture

After our visit to Mont-Saint-Michel, we headed west along the coast to the picturesque town of Cancale This charming town is known for its oyster beds, which produce some of the finest oysters in France We stopped at a little seafood restaurant called Le Surcouf, which is located on the waterfront. The restaurant has a cozy atmosphere and a friendly staff. We feasted on freshly shucked oysters and langoustines while taking in the stunning views of the bay The seafood was incredibly fresh, and the restaurant had a relaxed atmosphere If you're ever in Cancale, be sure to stop by Le Surcouf - you won't regret it!

Our next stop was the elegant seaside town of Dinard, with its Belle Epoque architecture and stunning beaches We stayed at the Grand Hotel Barriere, a luxury hotel right on the beachfront The hotel's elegant rooms and excellent restaurant made for a delightful stay. The hotel is an excellent base for exploring the town, which has a lot to offer visitors The town is known for its historic villas, which are a testament to its past as a fashionable seaside resort In the evening, we strolled along the Promenade du Clair de Lune, taking in the views of the bay and the beautiful villas that line the seafront The promenade is a great spot for a leisurely walk, and the views are truly breathtaking

The following day, we headed further west to the walled city of Saint-Malo. Known as the "City of Corsairs," Saint-Malo has a rich maritime history and is famous for its ramparts, which offer stunning views of the sea and the surrounding countryside We stayed at the Hotel Oceania, a comfortable and stylish hotel just outside the walls of the old town. The hotel had a relaxed atmosphere, and the staff were very friendly After exploring the city's cobbled streets and bustling markets, we stopped for lunch at La Belle Epoque, a delightful restaurant with a charming outdoor terrace. The food was outstanding, and the service was impeccable. Saint-Malo has a lot to offer visitors The city has a long and fascinating history, and there are many historic sites to explore The city's ramparts are a must-see attraction, offering panoramic views of the sea and the surrounding landscape. The ramparts were built in the 17th century to protect the city from attack, and they are now a popular tourist attraction The city also has a lively market, where you can findall sorts of local produce, including seafood, cheeses, and fresh fruits and vegetables The city is also famous for its beaches, which are perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and water sports.

The next leg of our journey took us to the little fishing village of Saint-Cast-le-Guildo This hidden gem on the Cotes d'Armor is a real find, with its quaint harbor and beautiful beaches. We stayed at the Hotel de l'Espérance, a cozy and welcoming hotel just steps from the beach The hotel had a charming atmosphere, and the staff were very helpful In the evening, we headed to Le Vieux Castel, a charming restaurant specializing in seafood. The bouillabaisse was particularly noteworthy, as was the stunning sunset over the harbor

Saint-Cast-le-Guildo is a great place to relax and enjoy the scenery The village is small and peaceful, with a few shops and restaurants. The beach is a great spot for sunbathing and swimming, and there are also plenty of opportunities for water sports. The harbor is a great place to watch the boats come and go, and you can also take a boat trip along the coast

On the fifth day of our trip, we headed inland to the medieval city of Dinan This fortified city on the River Rance is a treasure trove of historic architecture and winding streets. We stayed at the Hotel Arvor, a lovely hotel right in the heart of the old town The hotel had a traditional Breton

Dinan is a beautiful city with a rich history The city's medieval architecture is particularly impressive, and there are many historic sites to explore The city is also known for its art galleries and museums, which offer a glimpse into the city's past The River Rance runs through the

city, and there are many opportunities for boat trips and water sports The city also has a lively market, where you can find all sorts of local produce, including cheeses, fruits, and vegetables.

Our final destination was the stunning Saint-Brieuc bay, with its dramatic cliffs and beautiful beaches We stayed at the Hotel Edgar, a chic and stylish hotel right on the seafront The views from our room were simply breathtaking, and the hotel had a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. For our final meal of the trip, we headed to La P'tite Folie, a charming restaurant serving excellent seafood

and local specialties. Saint-Brieuc bay is a great place to explore the outdoors The cliffs and beaches offer plenty of opportunities for hiking, swimming, and water sports. The bay is also home to many seabirds and other wildlife, making it a great place for bird watching and nature lovers The town of SaintBrieuc itself is also worth exploring, with its historic buildings and lively market our road trip through Brittany was an unforgettable experience We saw some of the most beautiful sights in France, and we sampled some of the best food and wine the country has to offer The people were friendly

and welcoming, and we felt like we had discovered a part of France that is often overlooked by tourists. If you're planning a trip to France, we highly recommend exploring Brittany - you won't be disappointed!

Brittany is also famous for its delicious cuisine. The region is known for its seafood, crepes, and cider, and there are plenty of opportunities to sample these local specialties on a road trip through Brittany. One of the most popular dishes in Brittany is the galette, a type of savory crepe made with buckwheat flour Galettes are often filled with cheese, ham, and eggs,

and are usually served with a glass of cider. Another popular dish is the kouignamann, a buttery pastry that is similar to a croissant. The kouign-amann is a specialty of the town of Douarnenez, and is often enjoyed with a cup of coffee or tea

Brittany is also famous for its seafood, and there are many excellent seafood restaurants to be found throughout the region. In addition to oysters, langoustines, and bouillabaisse, other popular seafood dishes include mussels, scallops, and lobster. Some of the best seafood restaurants in Brittany include La Belle Epoque in Saint-Malo, Le Surcouf in Cancale, and Le

Vieux Castel in Saint-Castle-Guildo.

Another specialty of Brittany is cider, which is made from locally grown apples The region is home to many small-scale cider producers, and there are plenty of opportunities to sample the local cider on a road trip through Brittany. Some of the best places to try cider include the town of Fouesnant, which is known for its artisanal cider producers, and the town of Guingamp, which hosts an annual cider festival in September

Brittany is also home to many excellent vineyards, and the region is known for its crisp and refreshing white wines Some of the best vineyards in Brittany

include the Domaine de la Roche Bleue in Anjou, which produces excellent chenin blanc, and the Domaine de l'Ecu in Muscadet, which is known for its biodynamic wines In addition to its food and wine, Brittany is also known for its music and dance The region has a rich cultural heritage, and there are many traditional music and dance festivals held throughout the year. One of the most popular festivals is the Festival Interceltique de Lorient, which takes place in August and celebrates the Celtic culture of Brittany and other regions of Europe
