Editor’s Welcome Dear Readers It’s hard to believe that in less than three weeks’ time, the Olympic Games in Rio will begin. The build-up has been rather low key compared to previous Olympics, especially London as it was on home turf. All the same, it will give us all something to look forward to in the height of the summer and hopefully it will inspire us ordinary riders to aim for end of season championships and do our best in our chosen disciplines. The RB Equestrian, CTR Championships are fast approaching, so if you haven’t yet qualified, see the back of the magazine for the dates of the final qualifiers for showing and showjumping.

As I write this, local British Dressage Young Rider Joanna Thurman-Baker is about to compete in the European Championships in Valencia but I cannot tell you how they fared as the competition has not yet begun. I visited her yard and met her horse Apollo soon after they were selected. See page 13 to find out more.

The first CTR showjumping championships took place at Knebworth in 1996, making this year our 20th anniversary. We have had a brilliant 20 years with thousands of riders competing at our shows in all of the disciplines. In many families, two generations have competed with us and some riders and horses have gone on to be international and team GB riders. Many showing riders and ponies have gone on to compete at the Horse of the Year Show, so we are proud that we have given so many riders a stepping stone into a successful equestrian career. After such a long and rewarding tenure, I have decided that this will be the last year that the team here will be running the CTR championships. We are ready to hand over the reins to new people with fresh ideas and enthusiasm to carry them forward for the next twenty years. I am therefore inviting people to contact me via phone or email if they are interested in taking over the summer show and the summer dressage championships. I look forward to hearing from serious business opportunists who have knowledge about running horse shows and who have a passion to make them succeed.

Guards Jester is the 17-year-old Fell pony stallion crowned Senior Showing In Hand Champions at Olympia last year - and it was his first time at Olympia. Pookie, as he is known at home, underwent surgery for a cancer tumour a few years ago and he has come back fighting fit!

He has since been nominated for the Showing World Awards in October in the Show Pony Personality of the year award.

Gaddesden Estate Charity Ride Returns for Second Year The Gaddesden Estate Charity Ride will be returning on 25th September this year after a sell-out inaugural event in 2015.

The 2016 route will see the original course extended to include the 18th Century parkland in front of Gaddesden Place and the Georgian mansion house which overlooks the Gade Valley. The 10-mile cross country route, which takes participants across areas of the Estate not normally open to the public, includes 28 optional jumps.

This year the organisers have also invited a host of exhibitors to take stands at the start of the event, providing refreshments, entertainment and information to participants and their family and friends. The Gaddesden Estate is home to the Stampede Stunt Company, the Upperwood Stud and Clydesdale Heavy Horses, all of which will be represented on the day. External exhibitors will include a wide range of equine-related businesses, including tack, feed and equipment suppliers.

Locally-sourced food, tea, cake and Pimms will be on sale.

Tickets for the Charity Ride, which will run 10am – 2pm, are £25 per horse and rider, available via Equo Events www.equoevents.co.uk Proceeds from the event will be shared between the Riding for the Disabled Association and the British Horse Society.

The Gaddesden Estate Ride, an 8-mile, primarily off-road course, was reopened in 2015 after a brief period of closure. Annual membership of the Ride, at £85 per horse and rider, is available via the Estate Office. Regular Park & Ride events are also held throughout the summer, with tickets available via Equo Events and a trial ‘Park & Drive’, for horse and carriage, is planned for later in the year (further details on request).

Katie Price in dispute with Contessa Riding Centre The 38-year-old ‘Loose Women’ regular panelist Katie Price says she sold her prized pony so it could "have a quieter life" but claims she was never told the Contessa Riding Centre would be using her as a riding school horse.

She wrote on Instagram: "I'm really sad and upset and angry that I sold my horse Blaze to this person for 1000 pounds wanting her to have a quieter life as she is in her 20s and has had two major leg injuries and has done dressage all her life. She has now had a name change and is being used as a riding school horse!

"If I knew this I would have kept her! I had an amazing few years with her. If I could turn back time, I'd have her back."

Response from a representative of Contessa Riding Centre “We were saddened to see Katie Price’s posts concerning our Advanced Schoolmistress GiGi on her Instagram site. GiGi is a much-loved member of our team at Contessa Riding Centre and, along with all of our horses and ponies, cared for to the highest standard. She is currently exercised three times a week, is sound and goes about her work with huge enthusiasm.

Riders are assessed before they are allocated GiGi to ride and we are very careful to ensure her soundness and level of schooling is protected. Many of the points Katie has made are factually incorrect and, while we do not wish to be drawn into a slanging match, we do feel bound to offer some correction.

“GiGi was bought in 2012 for a sum greater than £1,000. We do not feel it necessary to disclose the exact amount, but we do have paperwork that we

can present to Katie should she wish to see confirmation of this. We arrived to collect GiGi in a lorry branded with our riding centre’s logo and at no point were dishonest in our intentions towards GiGi. Within a few months of buying GiGi, two of Katie’s ponies also joined our pony team for a period of six months. Katie came to collect the ponies herself from Contessa Riding Centre. As she was pregnant at the time, she did not want to get out of her lorry and did not visit GiGi to see how well she was. “As a Centre, we pride ourselves on our happy horses and fulfilled clients. As a Council-approved and British Horse Society A5 centre, we are inspected yearly and all horses must be seen by the vet. GiGi has presented as sound, fit and well on every inspection.

“It is in our interests to ensure our horses only work within their physical capabilities to remain sound and able to enjoy their lives with us.

Consequently, it is unthinkable that we would put any horse in a position where they would be in pain or worked inappropriately and to be accused of such is deeply hurtful and damaging to our impeccable reputation something we’re sure, as an experienced owner, Katie looked into before selling her horse to us. We have nothing to hide. We would be very pleased to welcome Katie and her vet to Contessa Riding Centre to visit GiGi and to discuss her welfare with Tina Layton BHSI and our vet. We would be pleased to offer her the opportunity to take part in one of our Advanced sessions so that she can experience GiGi’s work firsthand. We are sure that she will leave us comforted that GiGi is fit, well and much loved.”

Blenheim Palace International Horse Trials Coaches laid on from three equestrian centres Blenheim Palace International Horse Trials is launching a new initiative to make it easier for people to attend Britain’s most prestigious three-star horse trials (8th11th September).

The last of the 2016 series of qualifiers for the SEIB Insurance Brokers Racehorse to Riding Horse Championship again takes place in the Main Arena at The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials on Sunday 4th September, providing the final opportunity to qualify for the Horse of the Year Show (HOYS).

The series offers 6 qualifiers throughout the country, with winners earning a coveted ticket to the SEIB championship held at Horse of the Year Show. The SEIB Racehorse to Riding Horse of the Year has the honour of going forward to the Supreme Horse of the Year final.

The classes are open to both amateur and professional producers and are judged as for Riding Horses, with the best of type, whether hack, riding horse or hunter, deemed the winner. The Championship will be held at the Horse of The Year Show, 5th – 9th October 2016, at the Birmingham NEC. Lizzie Dodd and her event mare Verity had a nasty fall May this year which knocked their confidence a bit so Lizzie decided to turn her attention to Dressage. She started training with Phillipa Dimmock who is now also based at the yard that they livery at, Brody Place Stables in Eaton Bray. Lizzie said, “We have already become Dressage Divas” Two months after the fall, Lizzie entered her first pure dressage competition and she got a 2nd , 3rd place and a win for best turned out!

“We are looking forward to returning to Fullers Hill on the 23rd July, and the Chiltern and Thames Championships in November. Fullers Hill is a superb and professionally run venue that made the whole day so enjoyable,” said Lizzie.

HORSE SCULPTURE RAISES £8,500 FOR CHILDREN'S CHARITY Works by local artist Charles Elliott raised £9,000 at Ruby’s Summer Ball Charity auction.

Ruby’s Summer Ball is a local children’s charity event held

by Philip and Hannah Matthews in Bellingdon near Chesham Bucks. The event is held in memory of their daughter Ruby. They have raised over £100,000 which supports the Paediatric Neuro Intervention Fund in association with Yorkhill Children’s Foundation. Their events are well known locally and are always well attended.

Charles and his wife, Abbe Elliott, donated Charles’ first horse head sculpture to the charity auction, hoping it would help raise some money for a worthy cause. The horse head sculpture is life size and completely handmade.

He first makes a frame up then it is filled using various textured materials, which creates the impression of a horse.

It can then be mounted on the wall and is hand polished and lacquered. The idea was first inspired by Charles’ wife, professional showjumper Abbe Elliott, formerly Abbe Burchmore Eames. He wanted to create a sculpture to compliment her success on the show jumping circuit.

The piece raised £8,500 on the night. Charles also donated other works including a handmade copper rose to signify a Rose for Ruby, which sold for £500.

Can you spot lameness in your horse?

Lameness in horses is very common. It can be caused by something as simple as a bruised sole through to something severe or potentially life-threatening. In 2015 almost 45% of Petplan Equine claims were related to lameness on a yearly basis, so it’s important to know how to spot lameness as early as possible and know what to do if your horse is showing any signs at all.

IS YOUR HORSE LAME? The key characteristics you are looking for are: • Is your horse nodding his head in trot?

You may have seen Flora exhibiting at the Herts County Show at the end of May. From mild steel she makes animals including horses, dogs, pigs, butterflies – you name it, she’ll make it - from small wall ornaments to large, life-sized sculptures. She cuts the design with a plasma cutter and lacquers the steel in different finishes. She donated one of her works to the Starlight Children’s Charity and raised £8,500 for them. Flora welcomes commissions and her prices range for £50 to £2,000. She will be exhibiting at the RB Equestrian Chiltern and Thames Rider Championships.

• Is there any swelling evident in any of his legs?

• Is he unusually reluctant to move forward or showing signs of discomfort that are not normal to him? (e.g. putting his ears back in trot on the hard surface).

Call your vet if you suspect your horse is lame. Most vets are happy to discuss a horse’s condition with clients before committing to a visit, so if you’re unsure ask for some advice.

Godington Stud 2016

T

rakehners UK awarded the prestigious UK Elite predicate to the pure-bred Trakehner stallion Godington Hannibal following his competition achievement as well as the success of many of his offspring.

Hannibal is the first British-bred Trakehner stallion to be given worldwide breeding approval by the German parent stud-book. He is a product of a very well-established and successful breeding programme at Godington Stud devoted to producing top quality event horses of Trakehner bloodlines. He is a son of the Stud’s foundation stallion Roland, who was a great all-round competition stallion in his own right. Hannibal’s mother was the Premium and State Premium mare Havel V, herself a successful showjumper in Germany.

As a foal, Hannibal impressed William Fox-Pitt into whose garden he regularly strayed by jumping up a full sized ha-ha. Clearly cut out for eventing, he started his ridden career under the Head Girl at the Stud.

He was then taken from Novice to Intermediate by Jackie Stolper, after which Dag Albert competed him under the Swedish flag up to 3-star. Competing all over Europe, he reached the short-list for the Athens Olympics, but an untimely injury robbed him of the chance to participate. Later, he competed under Kittie King and Izzy Taylor, now both selected for Rio 2016.

One of the first eventing stallions, Hannibal remains one of very few to be blessed with the steady temperament that allowed him to happily accommodate the conflicting demands of ridden work and stud duties – some of his best dressage results were gained after a morning’s work in the breeding shed. Despite siring only a limited number of offspring, he has produced a high proportion of Premium mares, one of which has already followed in her father’s footsteps to compete up to 3-star. He has offspring currently competing in eventing up to 2-star, plus any number of children winning in the dressage arena up to Medium. He has also found time to sire two graded stallions.

oanna Thurman-Baker has been reserve rider for team GB twice, but following a run of high scores in the closing stages of selection for the Young Rider European Championships in Valencia 18th-24th July, she has made it into the team riding the family’s Highcliffe Apollo. “She was at home on her own when the call came through as I was away with her sister Samantha and her grand prix horse Spring Pascal,� said her mother, Diane.

Joanna, who is now eighteen-years-old, was only ten when Apollo came to the Thurman-Baker’s as a six-year-old. “We have all ridden him,� said Diane. “Joanne rode him at the BD Nationals when she was fourteen at medium level. She then won the Pet Plan advanced medium with him; Sam (her elder sister and former Young Rider team member) rode him at the Nationals when she was seventeen and I rode him at the Nationals at advanced medium when I was fifty-years-old!�

The run-up to selection included dressage camp at the Sarah and Tony Pidgley’s home and afterwards, six riders got the call; four for the team and two reserves. Diane is going to take the horse box down to Valencia in Spain, although Apollo will be taken there by John Parker who takes care of transporting the team horses to major international events. Joanna will fly out with the other team members. The team of four includes Joanna Thurman-Baker, Becky Edwards, Amy Schiessi and Robyn Smith. “It will help Joanna be mentally prepared for competition if she can get ready in our lorry, following her normal routine before the competition,� said Diane.

Apollo was bought from the Northcliffe Stud in South Wales. “Spring Pascal (Samantha’s Grand Prix horse) was bought from there the year before too,� said Diane. “We took him (Apollo) on trial. They couldn’t sell him as he didn’t like being ridden!� she added. “He is built very ‘down-hill’ and he used to be ‘tucked’ in the back and twitchy. He is not a leader and he will spook at an up-turned leaf but he has an amazing work ethic and when you get him inside the boards he is very focused. He is the most nervous when entering the arena before the test. At Wellington, a Grundy lorry emptied its load of bottles and it was terrifyingly noisy just as we started the Prix St Georges test indoors. He couldn’t cope so I had to retire him. The judge at C realised what had happened and she advised the officials that it was unfair so they allowed us to compete again the next day. Together they achieved over 70%, the magic score for qualification.

14 After watching Apollo go through his schooling routine, Joanna introduced me to nine-year-old Cassanova, her next top horse. He is a very well bred horse with a stunning head and stands at a massive 18.2hh. He was bought at a Brightwell’s auction as a four-year-old. Mostly owned by Susan Armstrong, Joanna describes him as a ‘mega’ horse. He is currently working at advanced medium, working up to prix St Georges. “I own one leg and Susan owns three,” said Jo smiling. “He gets 70%, even with mistakes. He is so big and uphill and has really good paces,” she added. “Apollo lives out 24/7 but Nova loves being in his stable. He gets bored in the field and so I only leave him out for three hours maximum!”

Nova is a modern stamp of sports horse. “He has to stretch his legs out like a foal to eat grass as his legs are so long. He is hacked out and is not spooky at all but he did bolt with me once!” said Joanna.

International Grand Prix rider Sam and Spring Pascal won the grand prix at Hickstead in June despite going home thinking otherwise. When running through the test in the horse-box, Diane thought the final percentage did not tally with the high scores. On closer examination, she realised that the marks had been added up incorrectly – in fact the final score was 27 marks out! Diane called Hickstead and Sam’s test was re-calculated and they confirmed that they had won on the revised score of 69.4% and had qualified for the British Dressage National Championships.

Wet wipes are the rider’s saving grace and a quick and easy way to freshen up after riding. Whilst wearing sunblock and sun cream is advisable, sadly it does mean that dirt and dust stick to you, so a handy pack of wet wipes in your tack box at the yard is a must for freshening up. Keeping sun cream in there is also a good way to ensure you can reapply and top up when needed during those long summer days.

have watched David and his sister Roxanne Britnell come through OBH Chilterns Pony Club, and over the years, they have been featured in Chiltern and Thames Rider magazine on several occasions. That’s why it is particularly satisfying to see a good young rider make the big step up to become a professional rider. When David won Rockingham FEI CIC 2*event in May riding his own Continuity, I thought it was high time I went to his yard to find out more.

Now 24-years-old, David has his yard at home in Bellingdon, Chesham where he currently has two horses in competition and two that are owned and competed by Roxanne. His mother Dawn who is a BHS Intermediate Instructor works with him on the yard to advise, support, groom and be his taliswoman.

David didn’t start riding until he was 13-years-old because he was into bikes and cars. “My Dad is a 4-wheel fanatic and so I was brought up on cars and mechanical engines. Our family company Dingocroft sources and supplies spare parts for all types of Landrovers,� he said. Dawn’s

passion for horses eventually rubbed off on David and he got his first pony, Timmy. Then came Bentley who was the model for Equilibrium Product’s first fly mask. 15.2hh Buddy, described by Dawn as a Heinz 57 competition horse, was the next one who came on loan to David and this was the one that gave him the adrenalin for eventing.

Dawn negotiated hard to buy Continuity six years ago. “He had a sarcoid on his sheath so I offered them half of what they wanted and they agreed,” said Dawn. “We took him and by treating the sarcoid with blood root ointment it went away,” she added.

About Continuity • He is called Brad at home “because he is good looking [like Brad Pitt]” said David.

• His good jumping lines means he is able to achieve neat, careful and tidy lines.

Quirks: Brad has to stall before being ridden. The routine is for David or Dawn to put bit butter on his bit, before bridling him. Once bridled, he goes to the back of his box and has a wee.

“I tacked him up outside the lorry at Nunney International,” said David “and because he couldn’t have a wee, it ruined his dressage score. He made seven blips in the test as he kept trying to stop to have a wee. He even made the wrong strike off which he never does!”

He can be sharp so David always puts a neck-strap on him. “He never spins round at a competition,” said David, “It’s like he flicks a switch as he is totally focused at an event and gets on with his job.”

David likes to school out in the fields behind the yard. He is lucky to have access to common land where he can train the horses in all paces, up and down the hills. He sometimes takes them to the gallops in Tring too.

When David is not riding and competing he trains other riders. He is a qualified British Horse Society Intermediate Instructor and he is continuing to study and take further professional exams. He makes his living by teaching and he does a lot for pony Clubs, particularly The Vale of Aylesbury and Flamstead. “I am very happy that the DCs have given me a lot of work, right from the beginning of my career, and I know many of the members and their mounts very well,” he said, “I also go to many yards and have a particularly good yard in Tring where I have some long-standing, regular clients. I get a kick out of teaching and seeing my students do well and I am keen to take on more teaching work. My plan is to pass more exams and improve my knowledge but to continue to offer good value to my clients.”

Winning Rockingham has put him into a higher league and his taste of success has further energised his desire to do well and ride more horses in competition. “What I am seeking most is competitive rides and I will work very hard to please owners and achieve the most that I can with a horse,” he added.

“His feet aren’t great,” said David “so we work hard to look after them.

We use Hydrohoof from Red Horse Products to re-hydrate his feet. In fact, we like all of their products. Our farrier Mark Rudge is what I call a new age farrier who is not averse to trying new methods. He was recommended to us by a friend whose horse had only lost two shoes in ten years of hunting!” he added. Mark puts copper nails in Brad’s shoes and aluminium plates on the front feet which help to keep his feet from breaking-up.

David has a young horse to produce and compete from local show jumper, John Whinnett. 17hh, 6-year-old Sir Gawain will start at BE90 courses with the aim of getting to BE Novice by the end of the season.

John also helps David with his showjumping technique. “Brad used to be too flat to a fence but John has helped me with pole work which has made his canter more uphill and now he can come off a corner and pop a fence, making a really nice shape,” said he.

Newmiln Jamestown and Continuity grazing James is ridden by Dawn and Roxanne. He has won the Intermediate Novice at Goring with Roxanne and BHS Challenge for Instructors with Dawn. “We got him for £1 as he was a stress head. There was nothing physically wrong with him but he would have been put down if we hadn’t taken him on,” said Dawn.

Fans of Science and Technology David and Dawn are very keen on trying and using new technology products. They realise that attention to detail can make the difference between success and failure when it comes to competing. “I am a great believer in science and the improvements that new technology can make to tack, accessories, equipment, feed and supplements. I am keen to use the best products to help the horses to be in good health so they can do the best job for us,” said David.

The horses go on the walker for 15 minutes before and after they are ridden. “We are great fans of the walker,” said David. “They seem to love it. One horse would put himself on it if he could! I know some people don’t like them but we think they are a great way for horses to walk out, warm-up and relax-down. We always watch them and never leave the walker unattended,” said David.

Schooling on the common land behind the yard

They have an Equilibrium massage pad which they use on all the horses before the saddle goes on. “It warms up the muscles on their backs before they are ridden,” said David.

They also love Wow saddles and own eight in total. “I have been into WOW saddles for twelve years,” said Dawn.

“Each horse has one for jumping and one for dressage. The saddles are modular, you can mix and match the four panels and one saddle will last a horse a life-time, because if he changes shape, you can adjust the saddle to fit him. There is a choice of blocks and flaps; long legs and flat seats are all catered for. The fitting is easy, just a puff of air so there is no taking away of the saddle for flocking and you can change the head plates yourself if the horse changes shape. They look great too. Our horses go softly, swinging over their backs, with no resistance and it’s all down to the air,” added David.

er Majesty the Queen still rides at 90-years of age and Chiltern and Thames Rider reader and competitor, Pat Perkins is not far behind her, still riding at 81-years of age. Pat from Barnet in Hertfordshire, has been a staunch supporter of CTR over the years and we are delighted to say that she is still riding and competing her horse Dilly. So please enjoy 5 minutes with Pat ‌

Tell us about Dilly Delilah comes from the Balleroy Stud in Lambourn which is owned and run by Mrs Dawn Cunningham-Reid who breeds really beautiful Highlands. I previously owned a Highland and really wanted to have another one before I got too old. Delilah’s show name is Balleroy Delilah and her stable name is Dilly Donought, as she has absolutely no space awareness.

Was she hard to find?

I found her on line looking at Dawn’s web and Facebook pages.

How fit and healthy are you?

I suppose for 81 not too bad. But I do have an eight-inch rod in my back with eight screws and two metal shoulders so walking is not easy but once I am on board, riding is not too bad.

How do you keep motivated to ride when you have ailments?

I keep motivated as Dilly keeps me interested. I would be very bored without her as I stopped working when I was 79!

In what are you competing with Dilly?

I am still competing but sadly only at Intro as her canter is rather like riding on a pneumatic drill.

Have you always had horses?

I had my first pony at about 12-years-old and my father said if I wanted a pony, I would need to contribute to the cost, so I picked apples for a Summer holidays. My first pony was strawberry roan called Coleen. I learned to ride with a very fierce Irish captain of the Mounted Division.

God help you if you fell off as he would yell at you and put you straight back on.

How often do you ride per week?

I try to ride most days - normally five or sometimes six times a week.

Who is your horse of a lifetime?

As much as I love Delilah, Jasper my coloured cob was definitely my horse of a lifetime. My special memory was winning my first dressage to music with Jasper. My walk music was ‘Grandma, we love you’; my trot music was, ‘Will you still love me when I’m 64’; and my canter music was Pinky and Perky singing the ‘Grand Old Duke of York’.

What are your top five precious memories with your horses over the years?

1. Winning my first music class on Jasper 2. Teaching my first pony Coleen to jump by jumping over the jumps with her. We won our first small jumping class with me actually on top 3. Winning £5 in a fancy dress class with friends as cowboys and Indians 4. Breeding a colt from my Anglo Arab mare called Scaramouche 5. What is your worst experience?

My back operation. I am not sure that it has really worked.

Do you ever feel like giving up?

Sometimes when I get out of bed and find it difficult to walk, I think about giving up - but it soon passes!

Do you have any vices?

Bad language. I try to control my language when I get annoyed. When I was young I rode out with some jockeys at a local racing yard so that’s where the bad habit came from – listening to them!

If you could do it all again, would you change anything?

I think if I could do it all again, I would have started to ride in dressage when I was much younger and not when I was in my seventies. I gave up jumping and showing after a bad fall. I would love to have reached Grand Prix standard in dressage.

Do you have any children?

When not riding and looking after Dilly, what do you like doing?

When I am not riding, I like to see my grandchildren.

I once bought Jasper a complete wardrobe from Thermatex. It included an exercise rug, a travel rug and leg bandages all embroidered with his name ‘Jigsaw Jasper’ in bright mauve, edged in Barby Doll Pink; you could see him coming a mile off!

oth Elmtree Equestrian and Elmtree Construction are family owned by husband and wife team, Bruce and Kim Clark. Based in Granborough, Buckinghamshire and covering the Midlands and the South East, these two businesses, residing under the Elmtree umbrella, design and build bespoke equestrian establishments – think “The Saville Row” of equestrian premises.

construction of private equestrian properties and equestrian centres. So, back in 2001, setting up in partnership with his wife Kim, Elmtree Equestrian and Elmtree Construction were formed.

We would however be forgiven for solely associating the Elmtree Group with the build of arenas, as at some time or other, most of us will have ridden on an Elmtree designed and constructed surface.

Back in 1984, Bruce joined his brother Tim Clark at Clark Contracting and together they built their first outdoor manege at a time when surfaced arenas truly were few and far between. This arena was built for their parents and is still in use today which is testimony to their construction skills. Clark Contracting started out predominantly as an agricultural contracting company, but over time diversified into a quarrying, haulage and construction company. All aspects of construction were undertaken from building houses and roads, most notably the Luton relief road. However, having a passion for all aspects of equestrianism and a solid civil engineering background, Bruce wanted to focus more on the

Perhaps the lesser known side of the business is the bespoke design and construction of equestrian establishments, which Bruce prefers to “build from scratch.” With over 25 years of experience, his qualifications are numerous for dealing with the trials, tribulations and limitations of constructing these unique establishments and with a solid working background in all aspects of civil engineering, Bruce says he “likes to build what others cannot.” He goes on to state that with every commission being so personal to the client and individual in design, every build is a challenge and joy to undertake. With a very relaxed, honest and self-effacing manner, Bruce is rather reticent about his construction achievements which are many and rather beautiful. Sadly, I cannot get him to tell me which celebrities or members of the Royal family, they have had commissions from.

The transformation of Radnage House, a former riding school is truly beautiful.

Having spent time talking with both Bruce and Kim, I am left with the certainty that any project undertaken by Elmtree Construction/Equestrian will over exceed the exacting standards of today’s discerning equestrian clientele.

Both Bruce and Kim have a varied and extensive knowledge of all things equestrian. They have owned, ridden, trained and successfully competed horses from a very young age and are now actively supporting their daughter, professional dressage rider Rachael Clark. With this combined knowledge they are well equipped to offer invaluable advice on all aspects of design and safety, to assist clients with realising their dream equestrian establishment and facilities.

From the numerous equestrian facilities Elmtree has designed and constructed, I asked Bruce which build he is particularly proud of.

For very different reasons, Bruce mentions two: Aston-le-Walls, one of the premier Eventing Centres in the United Kingdom and the privately owned Radnage House. Both of these venues were huge and incredibly successful projects. Washbrook Farm, Aston-le-Walls owned by Nigel Taylor, commissioned Elmtree to design and construct the international all-weather arena and the two allweather showjumping arenas, currently in use today and utilised by both national and international riders. Radnage House underwent a complete modernisation of its equestrian facilities. The new

Professional dressage rider Rachael Clark of Elmtree Dressage answers some personal questions for C&T readers with some surprisingly candid responses.

1- Who was your first pony?

Cuddly Duddely; he was an 11.2hh Welsh pony that belonged to my father.

2 - For what did you win your first rosette?

I received a special rosette for coming last in the Shetland Mountain and Moorland class. I was only three and I wore a borrowed jacket and tie!

Passing my HGV Test when I was 24 and winning my first British Dressage National title in the Medium Restricted on Urionetta.

9 - If you could start your career all over again, would you follow a different path?

No, I’m living the dream.

10 - Do you possess a lucky item of clothing?

No, I’m not superstitious; I wash everything so often any perceived luck would be washed out!

3 - When did you realise you wanted to ride professionally in dressage?

I was forced in to it! It was a natural progression from eventing. I always strive to reach the top in everything I do and I realised I didn’t have the nerve to event at the top level. I’ve always enjoyed the precision and detail of dressage so it seemed the obvious discipline to switch to.

11 - What could you not live without?

My husband Patrick or wine!

4 - Have you ever thought about giving up?

Yes, everyday it rains! Seriously though, I’m really lucky to have the most amazing indoor school constructed by my Dad’s company, Elmtree Equestrian, so honestly I only joke about giving up.

13 - How did you and Patrick meet?

I worked behind the bar in my local pub and he used to be a regular.

5 - What/who keeps you motivated?

My Mum and Dad. I’m also driven to prove a point as I don’t think you need mega expensive horses to succeed; it’s time, patience, personal discipline and practise, practise, practise.

6 - Who is your biggest inspiration?

My Dad, I admire his drive to succeed and he’s achieved so much; I just want to be like him.

7 - If you had the opportunity to ride any horse, past or present, who would that be?

I love my horses and I couldn’t ask for more but saying that, I think Glocks Undercover would be amazing to ride. (Dutch rider Edward

12 - Who proposed to whom?

Patrick proposed to me in Hyde Park, London. We were sitting on the ground when he proposed. I was so emotional at the time I can’t remember how it all happened.

14 - Where did you get married?

Our wedding was at home, it was the most amazing day and the weather was kind to us too; I’m so lucky.

15 - Where did you honeymoon?

We went to Cornwall but we are planning an exotic trip later in the year.

Even though Rachael’s answers are interjected with humour and at times a touch of irony, you can’t help but appreciate how proud she is of all that her parents have achieved and how grateful she is for all the opportunities afforded to her. However, immense amounts of hard work, together with drive, discipline, patiene and pratise, practise, practise - have been the major contributing factors to her success.

lmtree Equestrian Centre run a spring series of unaffiliated shows, culminating in a championship show with mounted prize giving.

Kim Clark of Elmtree said, “We couldn't have asked for better weather for the Elmtree Dressage Championship show. Some amazing scores were achieved with two class winners hitting over 70% and two gaining just below the 70% mark. One of the most memorable wins of the day went to Lisa Penman and Mr Beans. Lisa and Mr Beans have developed a trusting relationship and it is to Lisa's credit and dedication that the pair won the Intro class with 68.26%!

Amy Hamilton and Zirco won Prelim 15 with a huge score of 71.09%. Lucy Friedberg and Velvet won Novice 22 with the highest score of the day- 72.07% and Gracie Catling riding Chatty won Elementary 43, posting a big score of 69.14%. Well done to all our winners and to all who competed. Thank you to our judge Kathy Marsden who started judging at 10am and finished just after 1.30pm. Thank you to Equetech, Chanell Murray Equine Photography and Elmtree Equestrian Construction for generously donating the prizes for 1st-3rd placings in each class- everyone was thrilled.

Elementary 43 Champion Gracie Catling and Chatty

Rescue Pony takes the Intro Championships Mr Beans, a rescue pony, took the top spot in the Intro class. He was found in April 2013, tethered in a field in Hatfield, Herts. He was underweight, he had no food or water and he was Mr Beans when he was rescued suffering from a serious infection. A passing dog walker informed the RSPCA who rescued him. He needed a lot of veterinary treatment and was taken to Hampden Veterinary Hospital in Aylesbury. At one stage it was touch and go whether he would make a recovery at all but he pulled through and after leaving the hospital he was adopted by nursing assistant, Lisa Penman.

“I remember Beans arriving in a bad way,” said Lisa. “He was so quiet and easy to handle for such a young horse.

“While we were looking after him, one of the vets said to me that Beans would be great for my little girl Poppy — and the thought was lodged into my brain. As soon as he was well enough, I adopted him.

“He was a little nervous and Mr Beans at first but he is an absolute star. When I backed him in in April, he didn’t put a foot wrong. He is very trusting of me.

“One of my friends told me about the rescue horse class so we entered. Beans took it all in his stride and he excelled at it. He was great. We are so proud.

“It’s awful to think what he has been through in the past but Beans has now got a home for life with me. We absolutely love him to bits and everyone who meets him falls in love with him.”

Local Riders Victorious at Houghton Hall SEIB Search for A Star Qualifier

wo local riders qualified for the Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) at the SEIB Insurance Broker’s Search for a Star 2016 qualifier held at Houghton Hall Equestrian Centre, in Cambridgeshire, on 15th May.

Charlotte Pell, 27, of Bedfordshire, took second place in the Riding Club Show Horse class riding her own Betsy Malone. Charlotte bought the coloured native two years ago in the hopes that the mare might give her a confidence boost. “I bought her for fun,” says Charlotte. “I had lost my confidence and I wanted something that would give me back confidence in riding. She is my horse of a lifetime; she hacks, does sidesaddle, she’s clever and very kind – just pure fun, really!”

Charlotte, decided to give Search for a Star a try after hearing that the series would accept ‘hairies’ in the Riding Club Show Horse class. “I really wanted to give it a go, but this is our first show this year so it’s all a bit of

a surprise!” says Charlotte, who is helped at home and at shows by mum, Jackie Pell.

Jemma Wenman, 20, of Buckinghamshire, secured her HOYS ticket in the Working Hunter class taking second place riding her own Diamond Rambler. Jemma bought Diamond Rambler, known as Rambo at home, in February and she has been spending the past few months getting to know him. “He has destroyed five rugs, two stable doors, and two schooling whips, and he also managed to escape onto an allotment,” she laughs. “He’s a lovely chap but he has a lot of character!”

Before finding Rambo, Jemma rode working hunter ponies. Now, she and Rambo have contested arena eventing classes alongside showing.

They plan to do more working hunter classes in preparation for HOYS. “Search for a Star was her aim,” says mum, Debbie. “She has been dreaming of this!”

£750 for Breast Cancer Research raised by the girls in pink and their showjumpers Lucy Badham who was diagnosed with breast cancer 12-months ago, organised The Trot for Life ride at North Waltham. All the riders and walkers were raising money for breast cancer charities.

“We decided to take it to the next level and ride in our bras and tutus. Everything was pink,” said Beth Mantel. We are pleased to say that, after treatment and twelve months on from her diagnosis, Lucy has been given the all clear.

Position Perfect Open Day T

he position perfect open day went fantastically well.

Alessandra exhibited a body analysis session with Guinnea Pig Byrds A Squad rider Millie Wogan.

Alessandra worked with Millie first on the ground analysing her muscle balance and body shape for factors that would influence her riding.

Once Millie’s groundwork assessment had been completed Alessandra then continued the analysis on her schoolmaster Marido who is a 20yr old Danish Warmblood who has previously worked to Grand Prix but is currently competing Medium/Adv Medium.

Once the analysis was completed Alessandra then used specific stretching and strengthening exercises to help improve Millie’s position. Everyone observing could clearly see the amazing transformation Millie went through in just 30mins having never met Alessandra before.

The group then went into a lecture from Physiotherapist Holly SoperBSc(Hons)Physiotherapy, HCPC, ACPSM, MCSP on the importance of physical fitness for equestrian sport. Holly explained the biomechanics behind riding and explained how riders could easily go about strengthening the vital muscles used in all riding spheres.

Holly then went on to work with Millie and other members of the group

continuing the work that Alessandra had started at the beginning. Showing Millie and the others simple exercises to help develop overall core strength and develop a more even and balanced muscle tone throughout the body.

It was a fascinating day for all involved and was a true insight into the specialist training techniques Alessandra is able to offer as well as showing that working together with professionals from other spheres she is able to provide riders a completely unqiue service.

Guests were also shown around the yard which is a purpose built yard that boasts top of the range equestrian facilities. These facilties combined with the bespoke training opportunites available at Position Perfect make this yard totally unique.

Position Perfect is now able to take liveries from part, all the way through to training liveries.

Hannah Wild SQP (Suitably Qualified Person) of the Year gives an up to date approach to sensible worming

T

here is a lot of confusion and uncertainty around worming horses today. We are currently told that certain worms are building a resistance to the drugs which have been in regular use for many years. We are now advised to practise faecal egg counting to check the egg burden before routinely worming. Here Hannah suggests an effective solution to meet the current environmental conditions. Hannah is the SQP for Supplement Solutions and in this capacity, she prescribes and supplies POM-VPS products (horse wormers).

2. Monty <50 epg no eggs seen Following the results, the SQP would advise that Milly should be treated with a wormer against adult redworm (such as Ivermectin or Pyrantel Embonate) and then advise a further faecal egg test to be carried out in about 4-8 weeks.

Note: during winter, if encysted small redworm (cyathostomes) infestation is suspected then either Moxidectin or 5 day Fenbendazole should be prescribed.

Faecal egg count kits do not test for tapeworm, encysted small redworm, pinworm, lungworm, bots or liver fluke. A saliva test for encysted small redworm is currently being developed and tests for pinworm, lungworm and liver fluke are available.

Tapeworm can be tested for using an ELISA blood test (veterinary only), or an EquiSal saliva test. The saliva test has been developed by Austin Davis Biologics. A swab of saliva is taken from the horseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mouth, and sent for analysis. Both tests measure the tapeworm antibody levels to show if a horse has a tapeworm burden. Like faecal egg counts, the EquiSal test can be easily carried out by the horse owner. The results are sent to you or to your SQP for interpretation and should look something like this: Name of horse: 1. Milly - -0.09 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 0.6 Tapeworm diagnosis, Moderate/ high; treatment recommended 2. Monty - <-0.09, Low, No treatment required

Hannah Wild right, receives her SQP of the year award from Katie Jerram It is my legal responsibility to ensure that all of our customers are worming their horses effectively and efficiently. All SQPs must pass an exam and attend regular training to ensure they are competent to produce an effective worming programme and prescribe the correct treatment.

Worming has changed since I became an SQP, with strategic worming having become the more encouraged practice. Using this approach, horses are treated according to their needs, rather than the routine worming of all horses with the same medicine.

Top Tip â&#x20AC;&#x201C; DO NOT blanket worm. WORMS ARE BECOMING RESILIANT The effective way to kill worms is to worm strategically according to worm count results â&#x20AC;˘ Saliva Testing Kits â&#x20AC;&#x201C; for Tapeworm â&#x20AC;˘ Faecal Egg Count Kits â&#x20AC;&#x201C; for small and large redworm (mature strongyles, types of roundworm) In 2016, I developed a strategic worming programme to incorporate the use of saliva tapeworm testing kits and faecal egg count kits. The use of worm testing kits is becoming more common but there are still a lot of horse owners who want to continue blanket worming, many of whom donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t understand the reasons for testing: The reasons for testing are: 1) Testing prevents the unnecessary use or overuse of chemical wormers and thus reduces the selection pressure for resistance to the drugs that we have. Resistance to wormers that are used frequently is not uncommon.

2) Faecal testing causes no stress to horses and saliva testing is also generally not stressful.

3) Routine testing can help save money.

Faecal egg counts are easy to use. Simply purchase a faecal egg count kit from your equestrian retailer or find a supplier online and follow the instructions enclosed. The kits include everything you need to collect and submit a sample of droppings; including a small container, gloves, labels and prepaid envelopes. Once you have collected a sample from each horse, simply post the labelled container to the laboratory and wait for the results.

In most cases the results are emailed within a couple of days directly to you or your SQP for interpretation. The report will look something like this: Name of Horse: 1. Milly - 300 epg strongyle eggs (medium count for redworm)

Following the results, the SQP would advise that Milly should be treated with a wormer against tapeworm (such as single dose Praziquantel, double dose Pyrantel Embonate or a combination wormer [i.e. Ivermectin plus Praziquantel] to treat adult redworms at the same time) and then advise a further EquiSal test be carried out in 6 months.

The worming programme we have developed below is a basis on which to develop a â&#x20AC;&#x153;strategicâ&#x20AC;? plan as this may change depending on each individual horse and its situation.

December: Treatment for encysted small redworm using single dose of Moxidectin or a 5-day course of Fenbendazole April: Faecal egg count and EquiSal Saliva test (or blood test). Treat all horses showing a redworm burden over 200 epg (eggs per gram) and/or tapeworm diagnosis of â&#x20AC;&#x153;borderlineâ&#x20AC;? or above with an appropriate wormer.

Parwood Equestrian Centre sent ten competitors home happy after securing their place in the Haygain Pony Discovery Championship Final following a competitive second round competition.

It was 12 year-old Georgia Sims from Dunstable, Bedfordshire who succeeded in taking the top spot and she did so on board Laura Sims’ 12 year-old grey mare, Fairfax Hot Tottie. Having already produced two clear rounds, Georgia and her pony jumped again with great accuracy and speed to finish up with a treble clear in 24.44 seconds and this time was to prove impossible to match.

Jodie Hall-McAteer Claims Victory at Pony Showjumper of the Year at Bishop Burton Jodie Hall-McAteer claimed a commanding victory on the feisty but fabulous 18-year-old Tixylix in the Pony Showjumper of the Year. The win means they will again contend the championship final at the Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) at Birmingham’s NEC in October.

Jassy Pyke Wins Horseware Bronze League Qualifier at Wales and West Shows Jassy Pyke made the journey to the Wales and West show at the David Broome Event Centre in Monmouthshire, worthwhile by topping the Horseware Bronze League qualifier with Kim Barzilay’s Simply Billie Bunter.

There were initially sixty two competitors contending for the title, with forty-four supplying first round clears to make for a red-hot jump-off. Nevertheless, Jassy from Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire made short work of the jump-off on the 17-year-old gelding Billie Bunter, usually ridden to consistent success by Emma-Jo Slater and borrowed from best friend Kim especially for this class.

“It was third time lucky and I almost didn’t go as it is such a long journey for one class but Kim persuaded me to give it one last try,” said Jassy, who had just missed out twice on qualifying recently.

“Billie Bunter is the most amazing horse to ride, Emma-Jo has trained him so well he almost knows where he’s going before I do, which is good because I only ride him in these qualifiers.”

ouise Chamberlain, Jemma Wenman, and Jo Bates qualified for the Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) at the SEIBâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Search for a Star and Racehorse to Riding Horse 2016 qualifier held at Bury Farm Equestrian Centre in Slapton, Buckinghamshire on 3rd July.

Louise Chamberlain, 25, from Lambourn, rode her own horse, the thirteen-year-old Mystical Clover to a win in the riding club show horse class, securing her ticket to HOYS.

The pair have done some show jumping, gaining double clears in British Novice and Discovery classes, proving Rambo to be dual purpose. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I love showing. I am a bit of a perfectionist, and love that side of things,â&#x20AC;? Jemma says.

Jemma, who works in administration for Mercedes Benz, plans to get out and about for some more practice before the finals, after solving an ongoing travel dilemma. â&#x20AC;&#x153; We hired an indoor school to practise, but I had to hack for an hour to get there, and an hour home. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve now bought a lorry!â&#x20AC;?

Louise has owned the mare, by Clover Park, since she was a five-yearold, and the pair previously evented at novice level before retiring to focus on dressage and show jumping. Louise is a graphic designer and, appropriately, she is responsible for designing the 2016 HOYS advertisement. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We always thought she was a nice type, but you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know for sure until you try,â&#x20AC;? says Louise of her decision to try showing. â&#x20AC;&#x153;At home she is just like a Labrador â&#x20AC;&#x201C; she has an amazing temperament, a real peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s horse. To win and qualify for HOYS is just amazing!â&#x20AC;?

Jemma Wenman, 20, from Amersham, had already gained her qualification for the Horse of the Year Show at the Search for a Star qualifier at Houghton Hall, coming second with Diamond Rambler. She is thrilled to have taken the win this time in the working hunter section.

Jemma has owned the 17.1hh bright bay gelding since February. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I wanted a show horse, but it had to be right. We drove 5 hours to see him but when I tried him I knew he was the one,â&#x20AC;? says a delighted Jemma. The big bay is by the Irish draught stallion, Bright Diamond, and out of an Irish sport horse mare. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Qualifying for HOYS is amazing and very exciting, but he is very chilled about it,â&#x20AC;? she says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;He loves to show off and likes having his photo taken.â&#x20AC;?

Sophie, from Monmouthshire, has had the 11-year-old gelding for four years, and originally bought him to race herself. He had previously raced in Ireland, and Sophie won a maiden point-to-point on him before her cousin, Sam Parry, took over the ride and started to show him last season. He showed a bit of promise, and after meeting Jo, they decided to send him to her for a month to see what she could do. The pair stood 3rd in the qualifier at Stretcholt, just missing the qualifying places, and came back today for another try.

ith a new fabulous venue and a new format for the club this year, the show made a feature of the working hunter classes in order to encourage more combinations to have a go at this discipline. Starting at â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;teeny weenyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; with the lead rein workers, the class heights went up gradually during the day and judges Vee Taheri Sinfield and Jessica Suffling made good use of a variety of fences and the arenaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s purpose built water splash. Mini working hunter pony champion was cradle and nursery stakes winner and club member Katie Hickman on her Welsh section A Bluebell, with Jessica Ward and Dwylan Meilir in reserve, also a section A and winners of the lead rein workers.

The morning went on to produce some impressive jumping rounds and it was great to see classes purely for mountain and moorland ponies at this level, many of whom were canny enough to come for a warm up before

the National Pony Societyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Horse of the Year Show qualifiers the next day.

The afternoon was taken over by the plaited workers and the many talented combinations were whittled down to two smart partnerships. Gwythian Geraint and Emmy Parkhouse took the championship. This 133cm Welsh section B was Search for a Star Show Hunter Pony Champion at HOYS in 2015 and although showing is Emmyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first love, she likes Jago to have a varied life so jumps and hunts him too. Emily Tollafield and her Connemara Rocky, taking time out briefly from the eventing circuit, took reserve champion.

Over in the in-hand ring, Sue Howard and her impressive Izzey Garrick dominated the morning with wins in both veteran and hunter classes. The worthy winner in the coloured class was Helen Butcher and her native pony Wedgewood Blue, a former rescue pony who has gradually amassed a following on the local circuit, due in part to his sunny nature and his unusual and attractive markings.

She was given the task of following three local riders from her yard. In her report below, she focuses on 25-year-old Danielle Iaonnou, 11-year-old Olivia Taylor and 9-year-old Keira Jasinski who have all qualified for our championships this year. Danni and Chilli Past: Danielle and her mother Sue Ioannou bought Chilli as an unbacked three-year-old after wanting a project.

This year the pair have had many achievements such as qualifying for the Royal International Horse Show in the ridden coloured class not exceeding 153cm. Danielle says, “I am most looking forward to Equifest this year as it is the horsey holiday of the year.” She also stated, “I want to start doing working hunter classes on Chilli as I haven’t jumped for seven years.”

Danielle brought her latest project, four-year-old Freckleton Highclass, at the start of this year. This young horse qualified for the Cuddy Supreme in hand Championships at HOYS in 2014 with its previous owners. She has recently been to Katie Jerram’s yard to be backed so Danielle has great hope for this quality coloured mare of riding horse type, under saddle.

Next year, they will try for the RIHS again as well as some HOYS coloured qualifiers for Chilli.

In the winter, she will do some dressage competitions, plus some showjumping to prepare for working hunter classes next season.

Danielle’s Q & A: What do you aspire to do?

I aspire to getting into interior design, as well as continue with some art.

What has been your biggest achievement so far on Chilli?

Winning the CTR non-native ridden coloured then going on to take reserve coloured champion. Also qualifying for the RIHS for two years running.

Do you have a lucky item?

Not really, but Mum and I say Chilli is our lucky charm. When mum was ill, he was the main thing that got us through the hard times.

What are the ‘must haves’ at shows?

A few things: black eye gloss; Brylcreem; sparkle and of course, leg whitener.

What do you like about showing?

Getting the ponies ready, and not knowing the outcome of the day as every judge has a different eye. I always like having something to aim for so having a show every weekend pushes me to work harder.

Olivia’s Q & A: What quirks do your ponies have?

Pride sometimes gets too excited, especially when jumping; she has to have a little gallop around in circles first. Sooty, is scared of greys and coloureds for some reason, so we can’t stable him near Phoenix or Pride; that’s why he is with Becky (bay), who was my first pony. Phoenix is very lazy but I know I’m safe on him.

What don’t you like about showing?

When classes clash and judges don’t wait for you; that’s happened to me too many times.

What do you like about showing?

It’s fun. It is much more interesting than show jumping where you watch people jump the same course, whereas with showing, each rider’s show is different.

What is a ‘must have’ at shows?

A numnah. It is so annoying when you forget to bring your numnah because the horses’ backs can get rubbed. It happened to me this year at Dacorum and District Riding Club. I still blame my mum for leaving it at home!

Do you have a lucky item?

I used to have a lucky whip but I lost it a while back. That was a very upsetting day for me but I must still be lucky without it as I have had a good season so far this year.

What are your biggest achievements?

For Pride, it is backing and breaking her in by myself in April, then taking her to our first ridden show and winning the class just six weeks later. Sooty gave me my biggest achievement which was going to the Think Pink Charity Show in 2015 where we took the in hand championship.

annah Miller-Burton has had an amazing couple of months …

I took my two coloured ponies down to our local county show, Herts and had a great day. Colour Me Bad took his third consecutive win in a row there in the ridden coloureds and Hollyland Flamboyant was 2nd in hand. At this time, I moved yards to a lovely tranquil place on my own with stables, grazing, a lovely manege and the best hacking you could imagine.

Qualification at Royal Bath and West was a so close yet so far with Colour Me Bad, taking second in the HOYS Native Coloured Traditional pony qualifier but his travel partner, Arabian mare CS Lelisha went one better by winning the HOYS Arab mares and then she went on to take the championship. This was an amazing feeling as this is the second horse I have backed, brought on and taken through the novice classes.

At the Hocon Arab show CS Lelisha had a second in the RASS mares.

On Sunday 12th July I thought I would support a local show so took the novice Hollyland Flamboyant down to Caddington. The show is hacking distance for me and he came home with a win in the novice ridden.

Our next outing was NPS area 7 at Bury Farm where Hollyland Flamboyant was reserve Hunter Pony silver medal champion. I also won the Peasdown Intermediates and was reserve champion with my mum’s Fell stallion Townend Stevie. Stevie has come back to me after two seasons of predominantly being shown In-hand. He is another pony that I chose, broke, schooled and brought through novices myself.

At the end of July, with Colour Me Bad, I was first and TGA champion, TGA Quest Supreme, 1st Traditional/Natives and reserve Coloured champion and he was put forward for the Cuddy qualifier.

I have some more exciting news: I am now an ambassador for Smart Grooming. I couldn't recommend any products more than these; I've tried and tested them and the results were amazing. A super shiny, perfectly turned out Townend Stevie was 5th in his first HOYS qualifier at NPS area 25. I have also used the purple shampoo and blue rinse on the white hair of the coloured ponies and the results were incredible; the white bits were absolutely dazzling. I'm looking forward to getting the ‘patchy boys’ out at TSR at the weekend. Dudley (Colour Me Bad) has some HOYS qualifiers fast approaching so fingers crossed we will get there again. Wishing the Chiltern and Thames readers all the best success at the RB Equestrian CT Rider championships.

Champion Arab Fattan owned by Miss M Pook. Miss Pook’s part bred Arab Authentic also won his class. This was a qualifier for the British Arabian Championships.

Second placed Welsh Cob winner 3-years and over, Cheryl Waldron’s Ystwyth Sand Storm.

Headmaster of Beechwood Park School, Mr Edward Balfour presented the Show Pony Championship to Faye Heppelthwaite and 128cm Royal Tiara.

Faye smiled the whole way round. “She owned the ring and that smile can win a class,” said trainer Lisa Street. The pair have already qualified for the Royal International.

Maisie Kivlochan took reserve show pony with 148cm Anndalayse Maddison Park. Her other pony, 128cm Wayfaring Bluebell, also won her section so both ponies qualify for the Royal International.

Martin also rode his own horse Avanti Rannoch Mor (Liam) bred by Rita Jennings of Avanti Stud.

“Rita Jennings is a good friend of ours and Godparent to our son,” said Martin. Liam is by Young Prospect and out of Avanti Gregarious Gloria. “My wife and I brought Liam at 4 -days-old and we have home produced him. He came 4th in Heavyweight Hunter class winning the Aldenham Harriers Supporters’ Trophy. At 18.2hh and 800kg, Liam has had a successful career in county show youngstock classes having won at The Royal Horse Show, Royal Norfolk and Leicestershire County Show. This is the 4th time Liam has won this trophy and he is the only horse to have won the Aldenham Harriers’ Trophy for four years running as well as being the only horse to have won the Aldenham Harriers’ Trophy and Silver Challenge cup in the same year (2012). This is the fourth year Liam has qualified for RIHS amateur and open heavyweight classes. He has qualified for Equifest. “Liam has been a pleasure to produce and compete on,” added Martin.

City businessman, Martin Frost did well with his ridden hunters. Just Riley (JR) came 4th in the Novice Hunter Class and won the Silver Challenge Cup. He is a 7-year-old middleweight hunter by Avanti Amorous Archie (local RID stallion) out of Jacara Rain and owned by Sylvie O'Donnell. This was his first county show and only his second show having secured the Middleweight Hunter Equifest Championship ticket in April.

The Goldsmith, ridden by Heidi Sharp, won the Side Saddle Open Equitation. He is owned by Mrs Victoria Cable who competes him successfully in cob and working cob classes. Victoria looks forward to riding him sideways later in the season.

“Victoria gave me the chance to ride him after I had helped her with some side saddle lessons. I had been out of side-saddle for nine years. We were all thrilled: owner, rider and truly supportive daughter Monique, my super groom,” said Heidi.

“It is always great to be back at Herts County Show and the first time I competed there I was about nine-years-old, driving in the light trade. Many years of driving followed and then I first competed side saddle nine years ago!” added Heidi. Photo

3rd July Haroldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Park Farm It was another successful day in glorious weather for Crossoaks Livery at the Team Quest competition at Harolds Park Farm on the 3rd July. Both teams â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Crossoaks Crossed Wiresâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; and â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Crossoaks everything Crossedâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; each presented four riders to compete against the 13 other teams.

All riders on Crossoaks Crossed Wiresâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; team were riding at prelim level.

Joseph Benham riding Van Helsings Pride started the team off very strongly gaining 73.46% individually which gave him second place. This was followed closely by Beccy Clarke and Beua Be Better and Sarah Primo and Queenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Jester who both scored 69.62% individually taking 6th place. Sam Holwerda and Pheobe IV just missed placings on 68.75%. The teamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s combined score was 212.69 resulting in an unexpected 1st place.

Riding for Crossoaks Everything Crossed, Pat Perkins riding Balleroy Delilah started in the Intro class. This was followed by the members riding prelim tests which included Anna Sadio on Templemore Robin who scored 68.75%; Penina Kahtan on Eileens Boy who scored 70% and was placed 4th individually and Vanessa Porter on Crossword who scored 64%. The teams combined score was 202.79 resulting in a very respectable 6th placing.

The top 15 teams will be asked to compete in the regionals held at Pachesham Equestrian Centre on the 18th September. Both teams are holding a good position on the Southern Regional leaderboard and are hoping to get into the regionals.

TC Feeds & Tack Haven Chiltern and Thames Rider Summer Dressage Championships We are holding championship classes from Intro to Medium plus Freestyle to Music with Junior sections in Intro, Prelim and Novice. At the finals we also offer prelim and novice dressage classes for M&Ms, registered and non-registered. Also a pairs class using British Riding Clubs Test 5 (2014). These are non-championship classes so you do not have to qualify for these classes.

NEW RULES apply to qualifying shows from 1st April for the new summer series.

The qualification percentage increases from 58% to 60%. All riders must be members to qualify and the qualification can go no further down the line than 6th place.

The Gaddesden Estate Charity Ride,

Gaddesden Estate, near Great Gaddesden in Hertfordshire

25th September

Back for a second year, with the course extended to include the 18th Century parkland in front of Gaddesden Place.

The 10-mile cross country route, which takes participants across areas of the Estate not normally open to the public, includes 28 optional jumps.

NEW for 2016: host of exhibitors at the start of the event, providing refreshments, entertainment and information to participants, their family and friends.

The Stampede Stunt Company and the Upperwood Stud and Clydesdale Heavy Horses, will be represented on the day, tack, feed and equipment suppliers, locally-sourced food, tea, cake and PIMM’s will be on sale.
