WELCOME TO MIMAGAZINE CADDINGTON AND SLIP END Dear Readers, The Ava Ice Ball, held at the Auction House Luton, was the big event of the month for many residents in the locality which took place on 21st November. It was the party of the year and the organising team did a fantastic job of exceeding their goal of raising money for a new mobile ECMO machine. The team of CTR Media had a great night so please look inside to read the full story. We have also been busy attending Christmas Fayres and functions so we are all now well and truly into the Christmas spirit. Personally, I am looking forward to attending St John The Baptist Church’s Carol Concert on Sunday 20th December and the big news is that the BBC will be recording the service. By the time you read this, it will be over but we had to go to print with this magazine before it happened. I will include a report next time but that will not be until the end of February. Why you may ask? Because we have big changes at mimagazine for 2016 … NEW FORMAT MIMAGAZINE FOR 2016 To bring the magazine in line with what works very well for the majority of other community style magazines, we have decided to increase the distribution area to include Whipsnade, Kensworth, Studham and Dagnall, increasing our total distribution to 10,000 homes. It will give added value to advertisers whose businesses will reach a wider audience and by doing so, they will get a more cost-effective advertising package. We will merge the

three magazines of Markyate and Flamstead; Caddington and Slip End; and Redbourn into one magazine, and we will add the new villages too. We will be publishing bi-monthly rather than monthly and so each magazine will have more pages with more news and information too. The quality will be improved with a new design and layout so we are really looking forward to launching our new look magazine at the end of February. Please look inside for a further description of what we have planned. Have a merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

The final bows of Ten Times Table by Alan Ayckbourn

CADS is a village Amateur Dramatic group and is always on the lookout for new people to join in with productions. There are opportunities to act, sing and dance, depending on the show being put on, and the group would also welcome people who want to work backstage or help to build the sets.

The recent Caddington Amateur Dramatic Society (CADS) production of Alan Ayckbourn's Ten Times Table in November was another success, playing to two almost full houses.

pageant took place, ending up with a riot of things going wrong and as a result many people wanting to take charge! There was much laughter and people running around the stage and falling off horses!

It may not have been a very well known play to attract the audiences, but in true Ayckbourn style, it told a witty tale of villagers organising a town pageant based on a lost piece of local history, the massacre of the Pendon Twelve. The committee organising the event were somewhat dysfunctional, (nothing like any committee that meets in Caddington!) and the

Look out for notices about the next production in late spring, 2016. Caddington Amateur Dramatic Society meet at 8pm every Tuesday at The Heathfield Centre. For more information visit their Facebook page, Caddington Amateur Dramatic Society - CADS.

Good news for first time buyers in the Chancellor’s Autumn Statement First-time buyers will be able to get a 20% discount on 200,000 new Starter Homes

the deposit, so you can’t use it to pay your solicitor’s, estate agent’s fees or any other costs associated with buying a home.

Starter Homes are new build homes available at 20% off the market price. They are only open to first-time buyers under 40. £2.3 billion will be spent on building 200,000 Starter Homes over the next five years. This money will be given to house builders to provide a 20% discount on new homes. House builders can now apply to make their developments Starter Homes.

When you are ready to purchase your first home your solicitor or conveyancer will apply for your bonus When you find your home, your mortgage provider will ask you to hire a solicitor or conveyancer. They handle all of the legal aspects of buying your home. When you are close to finishing your home purchase, you will need to ask your bank or building society to close your Help to Buy: ISA. Don’t just withdraw all of your money - let your bank or building society know that you are closing your account and they will give you a closing letter. You will need to take this letter to your solicitor or conveyancer so that they can apply for your government bonus. Your solicitor or conveyancer will then apply online for your government bonus to be transferred to them at a date of their choice.

Bad news for Buy to Let owners and second home owners. Money raised from tax on people buying their second home will be used to help those struggling to buy their first home. From 1 April 2016 people purchasing additional properties such as buy to let properties and second homes will pay an extra 3% in stamp duty. Good News for Housing Association tenants who will be able to buy their homes, with the first sales in 2016. Currently, most people who rent a council home have the right to buy their home from the local authority. There are discounts on the home price available in many cases, depending on how long people have lived there. Right to Buy will now be extended

to housing association tenants during 2016, giving 1.3 million households the chance to become home owners. A small number of housing associations will be piloting the scheme in the next few months. More information is available on the Right to Buy website. Help to Buy ISAs to help first timers save for a deposit. Several banks and building societies have already committed to offer the Help to Buy: ISA from 1 December. Barclays, Lloyds Banking Group, Nationwide, NatWest, Santander, and Virgin Money will be offering Help to Buy: ISAs. You will be able to put away up to £200 a month in the Help to Buy ISA that the government will then top up by 25%, up to a maximum of £3,000. In the first month you’re also able to put away £1,200 that’s an extra £1,000 on top of the monthly maximum of £200. Your bonus has to be put towards your deposit for a home You can only claim your bonus when you are buying a home – and the money has to go towards

You need to apply for your bonus within 12 months of closing your account Do you think these government initiatives are helpful for first time buyers? What do you think has caused house prices to get to such crazy levels? ¡¡ Too much demand versus supply ie not enough building? ¡¡ Buy to let – pushing prices up ¡¡ Low interest rates for eight years? ¡¡ The reduction of stamp duty at the lower levels?

This undoubted ‘party of the year’ was brought to us by a group of people from Caddington as a fundraising campaign for Great Ormond Street Hospital. The focus was to fundraise for an ECMO machine as it was one of these special machines that kept Caddington resident, little Ava Mear (now six) alive 18 months ago. With only 20 of these machines in the UK at only four hospitals, including Great Ormond St, Ava’s parents were determined to help other children with a similar plight. “In appreciation of the lifesavers who helped keep Ava with us, we want to supply another ECMO machine to help save the lives of many children, just like Ava,” said her father Clive.

I organised a table of ten as I wanted to support the cause and I knew it would be a good do. I wasn’t disappointed and everyone in my party had a ball. 365 people donated their hard earned cash to Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity, and in return, enjoyed the party of the year. The organisers had done a great job, making every detail special. On arrival, the function room looked stunning with the ice blue and white theme throughout

Redbourn Christmas Market

Photos by Sue Mitchell Words by Katherine Horstmann

Sunday 29th November It was a wonderful event despite the unusually high winds. Thousands of people attended to do their Christmas shopping and take in the lovely festive atmosphere. There was everything from crepes, pancakes and mince pies to Thai and turkey & cranberry baps. The Wicket Brood Morris Dancers and the Harpenden Concert Band kept the crowds entertained outside, whilst other entertainers performed inside (and of course the wonderful Father Christmas was in his grotto). Thank you to Ashtons, our sponsors and to all our wonderful supporters including the general public who came to join us. Make sure 27th November 2016 is in your diaries for Redbourn’s 5th Christmas market.

Above, the crowd gathered to watch Wicket Brood. Below, the sta at Arrangements handed out Prosecco to customers who got a lucky dip discount on purchases. From left to right, Carly, Nicola, Natalie and Shelley

LOCAL FLORIST MAKES ARRANGEMENTS FOR HER ROYAL HIGHNESS PRINCESS ANNE

From left to right, Her Royal Highness Princess Anne, Head of Florestry at Capel Manor, Natalie Revett, Tilly Boswell and Carly Sparks

Apprentice florist at Arrangements in Redbourn, Carly Sparks, who is from Flamstead, was chosen by her college, Capel Manor, to present an arrangement to Princess Anne at the opening of the college’s new building for animal management and saddlery. Since the opening, the building has been renamed ‘The Princess Royal College of Animal Management and Saddlery, London’. This is in recognition of the Princess Royal’s ongoing involvement

with Capel Manor and her encouragement to develop the college since she first suggested the idea in 1986. Carly is a first year floristry student at Capel Manor College and was chosen along with students, Max Davey and Tilly Boswell to make and present a floral basket arrangement for the Princess Royal. They also got to create three buffet table arrangements for the day, which were of a large scale. These were designed in the same colour scheme as the basket arrangements using sunflowers, carnations, red roses, tulips and more.

department, I was extremely nervous. However, when she arrived she was lovely, very chatty and interested in our lives outside of college. She was intrigued to find out I already work within the industry. I told her a little about Arrangements and how it fits perfectly around my studies and gives me such motivation and passion for my course and the industry itself. She was very happy to go away with a basket arrangement and was asking us where she should keep it in her house and how long it would last. Although it went so quickly, it was a wonderful experience to have been part of and I felt honoured to have been chosen.” Wendy Beazley from Arrangements said, “Carly is extremely talented and we are so proud of her achievements in such a short space of time, and delighted to have her in the team.” Arrangement given to Princess Anne

50 Years of Hospital Radio (1965 – 2015) at L&D Hospital

Would you like to work as a volunteer at L&D Radio? Many skills are required to run a radion station: broadcasting, technical, administration, communications, fund raising and ward visiting to name but a few. Full training is given. If you are over 18 years of age, would like to help your local community, be part of a fun loving team and have some time to work in a professional but enjoyable environment, please contact us on membership@ldhr.co.uk or follow the membership link on our website.

ABOUT L&D RADIO: L&D Radio (registered charity No. 282934) seeks to broadcast a broad mix of music, chat, entertainment, news and weather programmes with

priority given to the hospital and local communities. The radio station is run by volunteers and provides programmes 24 hours a day throughout the year via bed head Hospedia consoles and our own 1134 kHz medium wave transmitter as well as on line www.LDHR.co.uk. Our station is funded entirely by charitable donations, sponsorship and members’ subscriptions. The team visits wards, chatting to patients and transforming that experience into a community service radio station. We believe that we bring a modern, professional and fun attitude to local broadcasting and we always need more volunteers to join us in helping to sustain this valuable service in the future. Visitors to our studio have included well known personalities such as Chris Tarrant, Esther Rantzen, David Pleat, Marty Wilde and many more. To top all that we bring our listeners the very latest national and international news on the hour, every hour. When we are not live on air, our computer system plays music throughout the day and night. If you are interested, please email info@ldhr.co.uk with your details.

Santa arrives to a hugh cheer

Flamstead Pre-School Christmas Fayre The Village Hall was packed with visitors in festive spirit. There were lots of Christmas jumpers and Santa hats, Santa’s helpers and all sorts of Christmas lights, glitter and sparkle. The children opened the fayre by singing three Christmas songs and then to everyone’s delight, Santa swept through the hall, welcomed everyone and then took his seat in his grotto to ask the children what they wanted for Christmas. There were lots of Christmas cards, gifts and decorations to buy and I came away with a beautiful wreath which is now

taking pride of place on the front door. There were lots of things to do for the children including arts and crafts and they could have a festive or Frozen tattoo. The tambola had an excellent range of chocolates and alcoholic beverages as prizes and there were many novelties to raise money for the Preschool. I couldn’t resist a

home-made mince pie which was delicious.

Road Safety… don’t be a statistic By Melanie Wooding Jones, Redbourn Auto Solutions – Caring for you and your car

During November we sent out 3,500 editions of the Children’s Highway Code to our local primary schools. In December we focused on reducing Drink Driving in our local pubs. We’re doing all we can, working with the Department of Transport and Herts County Council, to raise awareness of the importance of road safety locally. Are you doing all you can as a driver? THE FACTS:

Speeding - is a contributory factor to 28% of fatal road accidents with 57% of drivers admitting to speeding in the last year. 90% of parents say fast traffic poses a danger to families and children. One in seven deaths on UK roads involves drivers who are over the legal drink-drive limit. Distraction - 98% of drivers are not able to divide their attention without a significant deterioration in driving performance. Driver reaction times are 50% slower while using a hands free mobile phone. Eating and drinking whilst driving decreases your reaction time by 44%. 80% of young drivers make or receive phone calls while driving and 72% text. Tiredness - 25% of all crashes on British main roads causing death or serious injury are tiredness-related (85% of sleep-related crashes involve male drivers). Inexperience - 23% of 18-24 year olds crash within two years of passing their driving test. This is mainly due to over-confidence, poor assessment of hazards and taking unncessary risks Male drivers aged 17-20 are seven times more likely to crash than all male drivers. Unsafe vehicles - Young drivers often drive older, potentially unsafe vehicles as these are cheaper. This is potentially risky because older vehicles can be less safe. Vehicle defects contributed to 2,000 crashes in 2013, 42 of them causing deaths. Restraints - Using a child restraint that’s appropriate for your child reduces the risk of injury in a crash by 70%.

These facts are highlighted by the charity, Brake. The alarming thing is, if we make changes to our driving style and start listening to the statistics we are given, rather than reacting like naughty children flouting the rules, then perhaps our roads

would be safer. But somehow, this isn’t human nature … Psychology suggests that if we experience a behaviour (even if it is against the rules) and this behaviour didn’t produce an adverse consequence, we are likely to do it again. If it

is repeated, it becomes a habit which becomes acceptable (in our own mind) and the more we do it, the more we reinforce to ourselves and others that this behaviour is okay. But, if we dare to stop and consider the catastrophic impact of getting it

Page Page 35 35

wrong, then I’m sure we would reconsider our actions. Let’s not wait until it affects us directly. Lives are changed, sometimes permanently. Impact Speed: The impact of an accident may be greater than you think. A vehicle travelling at 20mph would stop in time to avoid a child running out three car lengths in front. The same vehicle travelling at 25mph would not stop in time and would hit the child at 18mph. As the diagram below illustrates, this is roughly the equivalent of falling from the first floor of a building. The greater the impact speed, the greater the chance of death. These figures assume that the car is in good working order. However, according to a survey carried out by KwikFit, 1.2 million owners decide to drive their cars knowing that they are defective; with men twice as likely to get behind the wheel of an unroadworthy vehicle. This, coupled with an unlicensed trade causing concern over the quality and accuracy of routine servicing and repairs, leaves us questioning how many cars on the road are actually safe.

Your responsibility: Drivers have a responsibility to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and well-maintained. If parts critical to safety (such as brakes and tyres) are not kept in good repair, it can cause the driver to lose control, or fail to respond in time in an emergency, with potentially fatal results. If vehicles are well-maintained throughout the year, they should have no trouble passing the annual MOT test. However, many drivers do not pay enough attention to routine maintenance: 40% of cars and vans failed their initial MOT in 2012/13. If defects are not dealt with promptly they can lead to expensive repairs, which are uneconomical. Below are some of the most common safety-critical defects in vehicles, which are easily avoided. Incorrect tyre pressure and tread depth – reduces steering control and increases stopping distances with an increased risk of skidding. The minimum tread depth is 1.6mm. However research has found that braking distances increase long before the tread reaches this point before this point. Therefore Brake recommends tyres be changed at 3mm.

Brakes are one of the most important safety components of a vehicle: without properly working brakes, you will have no way of stopping in time to avoid a collision. And yet worn brakes is the most common defect contributing to serious crashes, and the second most common (after defective tyres) contributing to fatal crashes. Look out for changes in pressure when applying the brakes or longer stopping distances. Loose wheels, defective lights, indicators, steering, suspension, missing or defective mirrors, overloaded vehicles, also contribute to crashes. A walk round your vehicle will alert you to any issues. Safer Cars: Newer vehicles are less likely to be involved in fatal crashes, due to continual improvements in crash protection features. The risk of dying in a crash is 71% higher in a vehicle that is 18 years old or more. Mechanical defects also become more common as a vehicle ages, further compromising the safety of the vehicle. Brake advises anyone using a vehicle to choose the newest and safest they can afford. The European New Car Assessment Programme (NCAP) provide a star rating for overall safety, which is made up from assessment of adult occupant protection, child protection, pedestrian protection and collision avoidance technology. You can check these on www.euroncap.com. Choose your vehicle wisely and incorporate a monthly budget to ensure regular maintenance is affordable. You cannot put a price on your own, your family’s or another family’s safety.

Gardening tips for January and February Written by Emilie Griffin, The Hertfordshire Garden Centre 55 Feed the hungry birds twice daily, morning and early afternoon, if you can, with high-energy (high fat) food such as fat balls, peanuts and good quality scraps. 55

Start forcing rhubarb crowns as soon as they start to show signs of growth. Place a tall pot or bin upside down on top of the crown to exclude the light. With the protection of the cover and the lack of light your rhubarb crowns will produce soft, sweet stems that don’t need peeling.

55

Plan your vegetable patch for the forth coming season. Get a list of seeds needed – with a calendar of when to sow them – draw the layout of your veg patch and make a list of materials needed.

55 Sow tomato and chilli seeds indoors now for strong, healthy, fruitful plants in summer. 55 Ventilate your greenhouse on sunny days.

Remember to remove netting around fat balls to make sure bird don’t trap themselves

BURNS NIGHT (26TH JANUARY 2016) RECIPE

Haggis, neeps and tatties INGREDIENTS: Makes 1 Burns supper. 1 haggis (with natural casing) 400g neeps (aka swede, yellow turnip) 500g tatties (potatoes) Butter Milk (optional) Salt and pepper to taste

METHOD: Preparation time: 20 min Cooking time: 1hr 20min First, for the haggis: Bring a fairly large saucepan of water to the boil. Place the haggis in the pan and lower the heat so that the water simmers gently - you don't want the haggis to burst! Wrapping your

haggis in foil can help prevent this. For a 1kg / 2lb haggis, you'll simmer for a good 75 to 90 minutes, but ask your butcher for best results. Meanwhile, peel your neeps and tatties. Cube them, then boil separately till tender. Drain, then mash separately with a good dollop of butter. If you like, add a glug of milk to get a smoother consistency. Then add salt and pepper to taste. Once your haggis is ready, serve alongside the neeps and tatties for a traditional Burns supper. What is Burns Night: Burns Night marks the annual celebration of Scotland's national poet, Robert Burns.

DID YOU KNOW? Robert Burns is said to have had a ‘fondness for the ladies’ and, according to some sources, was something of a rural Don Juan, fathering 12 children by four different women. At a traditional Burns Supper, the Haggis is brought in on a silver platter ahead of a procession of people, including the chef and a piper. The guests all stand to welcome the Haggis and clap to the piper’s music. Somebody then reads out Robert Burns’ poem Address to a Haggis (1786) in a dramatic and entertaining way.
