It’s goodbye from me... Dear readers, After ten years of owning and editing MiMagazine, it is time to say farewell and hand over the reins to Redbourn resident Paul Jacques. It has been an epic adventure and to remind you and myself of the fun times, take the journey down memory lane by turning to pages 58 to revisit some of the special days we lived and loved in villages between 2014 and now. My husband Mick and I moved to the Lincolnshire/Cambridge border some time ago to be near the grandchildren and now that I can leave MiMagazine in the capable hands of Paul, we are going to enjoy the freedom of retirement and the pleasure of grandparent duties. I wish him all the best and have full confidence that he will continue to deliver a successful product by adding his unique style and flair to the magazine. It’s time to thank the people who have worked for the magazine regularly and tirelessly over the years. Firstly, I am delighted that Janet Brown, who has worked for me since 1993, is continuing as the advertising salesperson; Markyate resident Emma Burrows who has been my bookkeeper for many years; and the regular distribution people who go out in all weathers to deliver the magazines door
todoor to all the villages and I am thrilled that they are all going to continue to work for Paul. Special mentions must go to my stepson Adam Grace, who does 2,500 copies for Redbourn and Flamstead, Peter Marshall who does Slip End and all the bits in between that no one else wants to do, and Simon Robinson who supervises his children to despatch 1,800 copies to Cadddington. Thank you also to the regular advertisers who provide the necessary finance to make the business viable. There are too many to mention individually but a special thank you goes to those who have not missed an issue since the start. Your business is very much appreciated and I hope you will continue to support Paul in his new venture. Before I go I must fulfill a promise to the readers who complained about the subject matter of the anagrams last time. My choice was insensitive and I apologise to those who were offended and trust that this time’s theme, Christmas, will be to everyone’s liking. So it’s goodbye MiMagazine from me and hello MiMagazine from Paul. Good luck and enjoy the adventure. Sue Mitchell
And it’s hello from me... The journey to MiMagazine has taken me full circle, from my days many moons ago as a trainee reporter in the original Herts Advertiser offices in Campfield Road, St Albans, through a career spanning national newspapers, trade and consumer magazines, and now back to my roots in local journalism. Publications such as MiMagazine have an important role in local communities, both as a valuable source of information for residents and as a vehicle for local tradespeople and businesses to promote their services. I echo Sue’s sentiments in thanking you all for helping to make this magazine such a success.
I would like to thank Sue for all her hard work in establishing MiMagazine as ‘the voice of the villages’ and wish her a very happy retirement. I know from experience that the ‘pleasure of grandparent duties’ will be just as fulfilling as running this magazine. As a Redbourn resident and a keen supporter of local events, I feel very fortunate to have been given this opportunity and I am very much looking forward to continuing the success of MiMagazine as its new owner, with the invaluable assistance of my wife Vivianne. A sustainable alternative
‘Lest we forget’
Hundreds of people braved the rain to pay their respects at the annual Redbourn Act of Remembrance on Sunday November 12 to honour those who gave their lives for the freedom of others. A parade down the avenue of the common to the war memorial was followed by the Remembrance Service, led by the Revd Rachel Wakefield, vicar of St Mary's Church, and the laying of wreaths.
Time for reflection – the Revd Rachel Wakefield and Cllr David Mitchell, chairman of Redbourn Parish Council.

Research by the environmental charity Hubbub showed that two out of five Christmas jumpers will be worn only once, and one in three people aged under 35 will buy a new jumper each year, creating a “single fastfashion disaster”. For the organisers of the Harpenden Sustainability Market, the message was simple: “No one needs to buy a new Christmas jumper – let’s just swap what we already have.” In November, the first ever Christmas Jumper Swap stall was introduced at the market to help save money and reduce textiles waste. Donations of unwanted festive jumpers and clothing were collected and visitors could then help themselves to any that fitted their size. Any unclaimed jumpers were ‘rehomed responsibly’ in local charity shops, schools and textile recycling banks.

Top tips to help separating parents at Christmas
W
By Thomas Palmer, a solicitor in the Private Family Law Team at Machins Solicitors
ith Christmas fast approaching, it is important separating parents start planning early to agree their child arrangements for the festive period in advance to avoid any uncertainty and tension into the runup to the holidays. The Christmas period can be overwhelming to separating couples and emotions can run high. Issues with child arrangements can only heighten these feelings. Below are my top tips for separating parents in the runup to Christmas: Attempt to agree clear child arrangements in advance If you are unable to agree arrangements for the festive period and resort to making an urgent lastminute court application, this will only increase stress levels and you can risk the courts having no availability to list your application prior to Christmas. Furthermore, you can have little time to attempt mediation or seek legal advice to aid you in reaching an agreement. Agreeing clearly defined child arrangements in advance can reduce uncertainty and anxiety for both yourself and your children and should always be the preference. Be prepared to compromise The first Christmas postseparation is often the hardest, however, you have the opportunity to agree child arrangements that can apply to the coming and future Christmas periods; if your exspouse has the benefit of spending Christmas Day with the children this year, then you can have the benefit next year. Any agreed child arrangements should be fair and prioritise the children. Consider agreeing to arrange a video call with your children on Christmas Day if they are with the other parent this year.
Be child‐focused It is important to acknowledge the effects of any agreed child arrangements on the children and agree child arrangements that prioritise their needs. A period of time they would normally associate with joy and fun could be more tumultuous for them and involve significant change. Children can sense stress and animosity; it is often inappropriate to involve them in any conversations when it comes to deciding the child arrangements. Although having a handover on Christmas Day may appear the fairest solution for parents, it is usually more disruptive for the children. Seek help if needed The first Christmas postseparation is often daunting for all involved. Consider seeking the support of friends and family for emotional help or assistance with any Christmas errands. It may be helpful to seek independent legal advice at the earliest possibility so you fully understand your legal position and have enough time to take action if necessary. We are happy to advise parents in relation to child arrangements for Christmas and to help them navigate through a difficult time. Please contact Thomas Palmer or another member of the Machins Family Team if you would like more information about the issues raised in this article or any aspect of family law – https://www.machins.co.uk

Celebrate safely this
Christmas By Melanie Wooding Jones – Redbourn Auto Solutions – Caring for you, and your car
I
t’s that time of year when we get together with friends and family to celebrate Christmas and New Year… and that can involve a drink or two… or three! Hertfordshire Constabulary launch their awareness campaign for drinkdriving over November and December and into January. Why? There is a significant increase in the number of drinkdrive related incidents on the county’s roads over this period. So, if we do enjoy an alcoholic drink, how much can we have safely? It’s astonishing to know that the first drink driving legislation was back in 1872 with the Licensing Act making it an offence to be drunk while in charge of carriages, horses, cattle and steam engines. The penalty was 40 shillings or imprisonment. 1968 saw the introduction of the breathalyser in the UK. This decreased the percentage of road traffic accidents where alcohol had been a factor from 25% to 15% in
the first year. There were 1,152 fewer recorded deaths, 11,177 fewer serious injuries and 28,130 fewer ‘slight injuries’ caused by road traffic accidents. The enforcement of this continues to reduce injury caused by drink driving, so you can understand why the penalties are so high. If you are convicted for drinkdriving, some of the penalties are a minimum 12month driving ban, a criminal record, a fine of up to £5,000, and an endorsement on your licence for 10 years. Even being in charge of a vehicle with excess alcohol in the body could result in a prison sentence of up to three months, a driving ban and a fine of up to £2,500. The everyday consequences stretch beyond this, to an increase in car insurance, job loss, trouble getting in to countries such as the USA, shame of having a criminal record, loss of independence, etc. So, what are the parameters? The current legal limits are: • 35mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath • 80mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood • 107mg of alcohol per 100ml of urine The above legal limitations are difficult for an individual to determine, so the quantities that were used when the breathalyser was introduced are sometimes still quoted today,
p14-16_MiMagazineDEC/JAN.qxp_Layout 1 21/11/2023 13:50 Page 15
15 ie, men can consume 4 units and women 3 units with a unit being equal to: • Small glass of wine (125ml) • Half pint of beer (3.5% vol) or • 25ml spirit The police, NHS and Think! advise that it is not possible to judge how much alcohol you can drink and stay below the limit. The above is unreliable as you are also affected by: • Your weight, age, sex and metabolism (the rate your body uses energy); • The type and amount of alcohol you’re drinking; • What you’ve eaten recently; and • Your stress levels at the time. Since 1968, many pubs have also increased the size of a small wine glass to 175ml or 250ml, spirit glasses have increased to 35ml, and beers have increased in their alcohol content, with some bottled beers being 5.5%. How does alcohol affect how we react? Our brains rely on a delicate balance of chemicals and processes which help to transmit signals from one nerve to another. Alcohol is a depressant, which can disrupt that balance and affect our thoughts, feelings and actions. With the first drink, the chemical changes take effect and start to depress the part of the brain we associate with inhibition. We start to feel relaxed, more confident and less anxious. But as more alcohol is consumed, the more depressed the neurotransmitters become, resulting in a possible negative emotional response, such as becoming angry, aggressive, anxious, paranoid or depressed. This is far from the pleasurable effects increasing, which may have been the initial intent. The other affect is on our memory and processing skills. The more we consume, the more these are impaired. After large quantities of alcohol the brain can stop recording into the ‘memory store’ resulting in waking up with a complete ‘blank’ as to what you said and even where you were.
The slow processing and depressed neurotransmitters narrow our perception and therefore takes us longer to respond to situations and hazards. We also become braver with our actions. Drinking alcohol (even just one drink) affects a person’s judgment and reduces their ability to see and hear things clearly. These effects make it much more likely that the driver will be involved in an accident. It is estimated that just one alcoholic drink can increase a driver’s thinking distance by up to 20%. How long do the effects last? Alcohol takes time to leave the body. An average adult takes an hour to process 10ml of pure alcohol (1 unit) so that there is none left in the bloodstream. For example, if you drink at lunchtime, you may be unfit to drive in the evening. If you drink in the evening, you may be unfit to drive the next morning. There is no quick way to sober up. A stodgy breakfast may make you feel better as will drinking coffee, but it will do little to help the alcohol out of your system! Alcohol in ‘festive food’ It’s easy to forget while we are drinking that some of the food we enjoy over Christmas and New Year is also laced with alcohol. These are some examples of how the number of units quickly increases, without us realising.

16 Police patrols are increased throughout December operating around the clock, meaning motorists who use their vehicle the morning after a big night out can still be caught for drinkdriving. Police advice is clear. If you have to drink, take precautions to ensure you are not tempted to drive: • If you have to take the car, make sure you stick to nonalcoholic drinks – you can’t calculate your limit so don’t try to. • Take it in turns for one of your party to be the designated driver on nights out. • Leave the car at home and use public transport or take a registered taxi – why not prebook one with a reputable company before you go out. • Stick to soft drinks – it tends to be a cheaper alternative as well as helping you avoid that ‘morning after the night before’ feeling.
Be ‘drink aware’ this festive season Even small amounts of alcohol can affect your ability to drive, so the only safe advice is to avoid drinking any.
Wishing you all a fabulous Christmas and New Year from your team at Redbourn Auto Solutions
It’s gold for Redbourn at ‘Britain in Bloom’
L to R: Redbourn in Bloom committee members Terry Hunt, Mike Thain, Meirion Anderson, Pat Schofield and Victoria Mead at the awards presentation.
The hard work of the volunteers of Redbourn in Bloom was rewarded when Redbourn was awarded ‘gold’ in the national Britain in Bloom competition organised by the RHS. In addition, a Certificate of Achievement was awarded to St Luke’s School, (a special needs school in the village), and Redbourn in Bloom committee member Pat Schofield was recognised as a ‘community champion’, also receiving a Certificate of Achievement. As the 2022 gold award winner in the ‘small town’ category in Anglia in Bloom, Redbourn was put forward to this year’s national finals. Because categories are based on population, Redbourn is classified as a ‘small town’, but Ms Schofield is keen to stress that it is “still a village” and “we prefer to be called that”. The judges congratulated “the entire community on achieving a very welldeserved gold award”, adding: “The overall impression is of a ‘village’ embracing its past and its history, but with its eyes firmly on the future. Redbourn in Bloom is facing the challenges of a changing climate coupled with an ageing demographic head on and is actively looking to transform itself into a ‘village’ that ‘creates an environment for the children, adults and wildlife which is fit for the future’.”

‘Fantastic’ fireworks
A ‘cosy corner on Markyate High Street’
Even the best efforts of Storm Ciaran could not dampen the spirits of another huge crowd that turned out for the annual Fireworks Display on Redbourn Common. Thanks to the generosity of visitors and sponsors, Redbourn Parish Council said bucket donations and raffle ticket sales have covered the cost of the display, which enables it to run the event again next year. “I’m sure you will all agree that yet again we managed to pull off another fantastic evening,” said Vicky Kidd, deputy clerk of the parish council, who thanked “each and every person that gave up their time” to make the event such a success.
A new coffee shop has opened in Markyate. Nook, at 40a High Street, opened its doors to the public on October 27 serving a wide range of top quality barista coffee, a selection of fine teas, soft drinks, cakes, sweet treats and savoury snacks. Described as a ‘cosy corner on Markyate High Street’, Nook is run by former marketing and sales consultant Helen Renvoize to provide “the perfect spot to relax in comfortable surroundings”. It is open from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Saturday, and 9.30am to Helen Renvoize 3pm on Sunday.

Make sure your home is secure this winter
T
he clocks have gone back and the darker afternoons are well and truly upon us. Unfortunately, this means the opportunities for criminals increase. The number of residential burglaries across the county is slightly below same period last year, however, some areas have seen an increase, says Hertfordshire Constabulary. During the winter months, burglaries tend to increase as many homes are left unlit during the dark afternoons, which can alert burglars to properties that are empty. Burglars are often opportunistic thieves. They seek out any opening they can take advantage of, specifically doors and windows that are left open or unlocked or are easy to force. Anything of value that they might spot through a window will only spur them on. But it really does not take much to deter these thieves – just smart thinking. Over the next few months, Hertfordshire Constabulary will be sharing home security advice with residents. Local Safer Neighbourhood teams will be holding crime prevention events across the county, offering free security devices, as well as tips on keeping homes and valuables safe. Residents are also being advised to consider installing some of the affordable security devices which are currently available. There is a variety of inexpensive security lights and wifienabled doorbell and
interior cameras, fitted with motion sensors, which enable you to monitor your home remotely using your phone. These kinds of devices can be easily installed at minimal expense and have helped to deter burglaries and in some cases led to offenders being arrested, the constabulary says. Detective Superintendent Matt Phillips, from Hertfordshire Constabulary’s Local Policing Command, said: “Burglaries haven’t increased over the last year across the county, however, there is the potential to see an increase once the clocks go back. “Burglary is a priority for us and we will always attend if your home is burgled to provide support and conduct a thorough investigation with forensic specialists. “We have specialist detectives that actively target offenders who travel into the county from other areas. “Making sure your home appears occupied is the best way to deter burglars, by using a timer to switch on a light when it gets dark. “Securing windows and doublelocking PVCu doors, by lifting the handle and turning the key to engage all the safety features, are also easy ways make sure your home is secure. “We would also advise residents to install some of the affordable security devices, like doorbell cameras and wifi plugs. These kinds of devices are easy to install and are getting cheaper.”
