Redbourn Fun Run, Studham Fair & Caddinton WI, 70th Jubilee - local events back at last Your local magazine for Redbourn, Kinsbourne Green and North Harpenden, Markyate, Flamstead, Mi_ADVERT_148x105mm.pdf 1 18/08/2021 15:42 Caddington, Slip End, Aley Green, Woodside, Kensworth, Whipsnade, Studham, Gaddesden Row.

Dear Readers, The 70th Jubilee celebrations are over and from the huge number of celebrations, clearly the Brits still love the Queen and the Royal family. With so much misery abounding, it was great to forget our cares and have a knees-up. I love the photo below right, of the Union Jack recreation by Beechwood Park school for the celebrations. I wonder how much rehearsing it took and isn’t it effective with the drone photo from above? It was sad to see that EJ Smith hardware in Markyate has now closed down. Gary Draper’s post got 137 reactions and 57 comments to the news.

Food Distribution Point opening in Redbourn Food and fuel poverty has been much in the news recently but it is not a new problem. Food insufficiency has been a fact of life in all communities for many years. Research has confirmed that there are now nearly twice as many foodbanks in the UK as there are branches of McDonalds. In Redbourn the issue came to light during lockdown, when volunteers from Redbourn Community Group (RCG) were called upon to collect and deliver not only prescriptions and supermarket shopping but also food parcels from foodbanks in the wider area. For more than two years RCG has continued to travel across the area to collect and deliver food parcels. Thanks to a generous village-wide project, RCG has also delivered hampers for families at Christmas to supplement the standard supplies. St Albans & District Foodbank, which is affiliated to the national charity Trussell Trust, provides food distribution points on a weekly schedule across the district, offering food parcels from its warehouse in Redbourn. RCG volunteers have driven all over St Albans District to collect from this source. Some families from the village have travelled even further afield to other centres. For the past few months RCG has been working in partnership with St Albans & District Foodbank. This has resulted in a new weekly food distribution point in Redbourn, saving volunteer time and food mileage and, most importantly, making help more directly available to the people who need it in the village. As well as providing parcels with enough food for three days of nutritious meals, volunteers at the foodbank distribution point at Redbourn Methodist Church will

welcome visitors with refreshments for themselves and their children. They will offer to sit down for a friendly chat with clients and may be able to suggest other sources of help for them. This may be the only conversation that some visitors have in the whole day. Sally Bartlett, Chair of Redbourn Community Group, said: “We are very happy to be working in collaboration with St Albans & District Foodbank to start to bring a joined up food sufficiency offering to the village. Clients will be welcomed with a smile and a chat and we hope they will leave feeling a little less troubled than when they entered.” Rukia Augustine, CEO of St Albans & District Foodbank said: We know how important foodbanks are to local communities. We are delighted to have the support of Redbourn Community Group to bring this service to Redbourn. Redbourn Community Group and St Albans & District Foodbank are united in believing that no one should have to go without food or make choices about food or fuel. If you or anyone you know is in need of food support in Redbourn, please contact the RCG office on 01582 794550 for a referral.

8 3rd St George’s Day event in Caddington After a few years of lockdown, this popular event took place on Saturday 23rd April at The Heathfield Centre. There were fewer stalls than before (as we have lost a bit of space in the foyer and corridor), but the ones that were there, were run by people selling their local wares. The entertainers on and off stage performed throughout the day and the café was continually busy, selling various refreshments. The bacon rolls were popular and were first to sell out! Outside there was a bouncy castle, classic motorbikes, Pepperstock Archers and a miniature railway. A police car turned up for a little while for the children to explore. The money raised will go to a Ukraine charity as opposed to the Riding for the Disabled this time. It was decided to change due to the devastating situation that is going on in Ukraine. The face painting was popular with the young children who attended and the tombolas were very busy. At 4.30pm it was the long-awaited unveiling of the new village sign on the village green which was done by Stephen Quinn our “villager of the year” who is the manager of our local co-op. Also a beautiful bench, locally made, has been situated near the sign. All in all, it was a very good day. Here are a few photos of the day from Kay Palfrey

10 Caddington Women’s Institute Goings On The Mercy Ships - Ken Brazier and his wife talked to us about The Mercy Ships. These are charity ships, like cruise ships, that travel to East Africa. They are fully equipped like a hospital and all the staff are volunteers. There are few, if no medical centres in the area they go to where all kinds of medical problems occur. They adminster drugs and treatments to the sick and injections to all who come forward to prevent pandemics. St. Georges's Day was very successful at Heathfield Community Centre with many events and stalls to see and our W.I. provided a good selection of welcome refreshments. Activities included Maypole Dancing, The Rock Choir, Folk singing, Local singers from Caddington Care, Archery, The Little Train for rides, and Vintage Autocycles which were on display. Most of the money donated will go to the Ukraine Fund. We wish to thank you all for your help in contributing to this well worthy cause. Platinum Jubilee - some members are making flowers for the Church to display and we are hosting afternoon tea in the Caddington Sports & Social Club. Thank you to Carol Jones and Kay Palfrey for opening our Caddington Village Sign and both the Sign and Wrought Iron Seat look really smart; an asset to our village. At our group meeting, we were entertained by Chris Hazell who spoke about his interest and career in the music industry. In June we are having a Games Night. There will be darts, table tennis, shove halfpenny, and pool.. Soft shoes or trainers on the night, ladies.

New sign and bench for Caddington

As you can see we are a very busy W.I. with something for everyone. We meet on the First Tuesday of each month at 7.30 p.m. at The Caddington Sports and Social Club, Manor Road, Caddington. We look forward to you joining us soon. Linda Edwards (Treasurer)

We were planning a yarn bomb display for the village until the dreaded covid but undeterred, we carried on making and using a WhatsApp group to stay in touch. We did the poppies for Remembrance Day and now after more than two years, we were able to make this maypole of flowers and post covers as well as the bin. Dealing with Business Interests on Divorce When dealing with the finances upon divorce, all assets need to be taken into account including any business interests. It can be particularly contentious when this includes interests in family businesses which have spanned generations. Business interests are likely to be regarded as matrimonial assets and therefore there are circumstances when their value can be added to the matrimonial pot. Business Valuations It is usual for a business to be valued by an independent accountant or a forensic accountant in large or more complex cases. The exceptions when a valuation is unlikely to be required are: • • • •

if the business is particularly small, meaning the cost of a valuation would not be proportionate the business is an income producing mechanism for one spouse or the family and holds little to no assets the business interest is as a sole trader the business interest is a minority shareholding in a quoted company.

Court Powers The Court has a wide range of powers to order the sale of a business or the transfer of shares from one person to another, subject to any restrictions in a shareholders’ agreement. Courts however prefer to leave businesses intact and it is possible for both spouses to remain involved with the business if there is a large degree of cooperation, although a new shareholders’ agreement or partnership agreement would likely be required. A spouse with less involvement in the business may be able to offset their business interest by receiving a greater share of the other assets, such as the home, investments and pensions. It is less likely the Court would order a business to be sold if there is third party involvement with the business. Another consideration may be the structure and nature of the business i.e. whether it is a limited company, partnership or a company registered in a different jurisdiction. Protecting Business Interests

The appropriate method of valuation can vary depending upon the circumstances; an earnings based valuation is the most commonly used valuation technique when valuing ongoing trading companies, however a net asset valuation may be more suitable for a property investment company. Such valuations are treated as a guide rather than definitive absolutes.

If you have an interest in a business, and are getting married, it is worth asking your fiancé to sign a prenuptial agreement. A pre-nuptial agreement can protect your business in the event of a divorce, provided the overall agreement is fair and meets the other person’s needs. To learn more about pre-nuptial agreements, please take a look at our website.

There can be tax implications for transferring shares or extracting money from a business to fund a settlement and a tax expert should be instructed to advise the most tax efficient method of raising capital from a business.

We have a team of family lawyers who are experts in dealing with finances on divorce when business interests are involved. If you need help or advice on divorce or separation, please contact us today: www.machins.co.uk Luton 01582 514000 Berkhamsted 01442 872311

Redbourn Fun Run Sunday 8th May 2022 in the grounds of Everyone Active Leisure Centre in Redbourn Photos by Lisa Baynes The sixth Redbourn Fun Run was another huge success. More than 1,600 people joined in the sunshine to get fit and raise funds for Redbourn Primary School and The Amy Robinson Charitable Foundation. “We were very lucky to have a great committee, generous sponsors, helpful volunteers, dedicated supporters and, above all, enthusiastic runners who made for a day full of smiles and personal achievements, all in a good cause,” said Ruth Upjohn. Redbourn Primary School’s Head Teacher, Miss Fenn sounded the horn to start the 1km, 3km and 5km races, and Mrs Couch set off the Relay races. Spectators cheered on the amazing 750 runners before Annie Brewster awarded the trophies to our race winners. This run really was made for fun!

New programme shines light on coercive control “He would call me dozens of times a day, wanting to know where I was and who I was with. He would check my phone and even delete contacts from it. He would turn up at my workplace or insist that I leave the studio to eat lunch with him in his car.” These are the words of ITV presenter Ruth Dodsworth (pictured right: picture courtesy of ITV) speaking on Good Morning Britain about the abuse she endured at the hands of her ex-husband, who is now in prison after he pleaded guilty to stalking and coercive control.

Exciting times! It’s the first summer in a long while where we don’t have to worry so much about COVID restrictions. A sense of freedom has hit us all. Whether travelling within the UK or abroad, the strong likelihood is that we will want to use our cars to get to the airport, seaside, camping or trekking! So, lets help you get ready for a long-awaited relaxing holiday, making sure your travel is trouble free. There’s nothing worse than an untimely breakdown, which isn’t just financially draining but hugely inconvenient, so it is worth planning ahead. Fortunately, there are several steps you can take to help minimise your risk: Faultless Tyres The higher summer temperature increases the risk of a blowout, so it is important to carry out some simple checks before you leave the drive. Check the tyre tread depth is legal (1.6mm) and look for any uneven wearing across the tyre and for any cracks in the side walls. Remembering that 1.6mm means the tyre is 80% worn. Make sure the tyres are correctly inflated according to the load you’ll be carrying, especially if you are carrying cases, cycles, camping equipment, etc. The correct inflation information will be in the car’s handbook. Pulling Trailers The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) have just released Trailer Safety Accreditation Scheme. DVSA recommend that anyone who is either new to towing or those who tow regularly, should attend the accredited training to make sure they have the skills and knowledge to tow safely. Find out more here: https://despatch.blog.gov.uk/2022/05/18/launchingthe-trailer-safety-accreditation-scheme/ Don’t forget to check the pressures of the trailer tyres too! Check your Levels Liquids react to high temperatures, so it’s important they are checked to avoid overheating. Coolant has the important job of preventing your engine from overheating. So, to prevent sitting on the hard shoulder (if you can find one) with smoke pouring from under the bonnet, it is wise to ensure it is topped to the right level before leaving on a long journey.

We’re all going on a summer holiday… By Melanie Wooding Jones – Redbourn Auto Solutions, Caring for you and your car

Whilst you are under the bonnet, check your oil levels. Oil ensures your engine runs smoothly. If you don’t have sufficient in your sump or the quality is poor, parts can get damaged or at worst the engine can cease suddenly. Engines need to be topped with the right oil, so make sure you check which is right for your car first. Make sure you are using the correct fuel and that you have plenty in the car for a long journey to prevent unnecessary anxiety in traffic. Clear Vision Sunshine or rain, it’s important we can see clearly. It’s not just the bugs that hit our windscreen that impair our vision, but also the glare from the sunshine or glare from the road also. Reduce the effect of a dazzling sun by keeping your windscreen nice and clean inside and out! Make sure your windscreen wipers are effective by replacing worn or damaged wipers. Keep your washer fluid and screen wash to the correct level. It’s also useful to make sure you travel with a pair of sunglasses. Make sure any chips in your windscreen are repaired early. It’s much cheaper than replacing your To advertise call 07941 661004

windscreen. See and be seen! Ensure all your lights are working and visible to others. Keep yourself healthy Anything that slows down your reaction time, hampers your judgement or hinders your concentration, can be dangerous. • •

Make sure you don’t drive if you are on medication that makes you feel drowsy. Ensure you are feeling well enough to drive. Everyone is different, but if your body is battling a bug, it may be that it is slowing you down. If you’re sneezing drop back as (according to the AA) at 70mph you lose vision for up to 100m! Hay fever can be an issue March-September, so it is worth keeping the windows and vents closed. Also cleaning the mats and carpets regularly will help. If you are a smoker, ensure you extinguish your cigarette responsibly without causing danger to others or risk igniting roadside grass.

Tiredness Always safest to avoid driving when tired. But, if you do get caught out, here’s a few tips: (continued on page 35) Please mention

Make sure you take breaks. Black Boxes ask you to take at least 20 minutes break every two hours. If travelling on a longer trip, plan several stops rather than one long one. Don’t drink alcohol or eat a heavy meal before driving (remember how you feel after a large Sunday roast!) If you feel tired, STOP! Drink a strong cup of coffee (or maybe two!). If you do need to take a nap, restrict it to 15 minutes and be careful where you park. Safety is paramount, so be aware of your surroundings and park legally. If parking in a car park, be aware of any restrictions (you don’t want to wake up to a ticket!)

Uneven Road surface Newer technology means that our roads are often repaired or replaced with a road surface that relies on people driving on it to bed down the lose chippings. There are a few examples of that around our villages currently. As frustrating as it can be, it is best to keep to the speed limit set (usually under 20mph) and keep your distance from the car in front. The lose chippings can cause damage to your car. It isn’t nice to hear them flicking up damaging your paintwork, but they also crack headlights and damage windscreens. Slow Moving Vehicles A slow-moving vehicle can be frustrating at the best of times, but if you’re running late the situation is exacerbated further. During the summer months we encounter many vehicles towing caravans or trailer tents and farm equipment such as tractors and construction equipment which all have a restricted speed. Make sure you leave plenty of distance and remember if you are navigating around them, they may well be longer than they appear, so you’ll need plenty of room to get past. Leave plenty of time for your journey so that you’re not tempted to rush and potentially make risky judgement calls.

32-36 Redbourn Autos.indd 35

Avoid a breakdown Be aware of weather conditions and how that will affect the road. Heavy rain impairs vision and can make hot roads slippery. If you’re in the countryside dried mud becomes a skid pan! Keep you and belongings safe by placing all lose equipment in the boot. If you are involved in an accident, you’re reducing the likelihood of anyone being hit with a missile! Make sure you have the contact details of your AA/ RAC/Green Flag recovery to hand so that it is available should you ever need it. If you don’t think you have a recovery service, it might be worth checking your bank account details to see if they cover you. Continental Driving The rules have recently changed, so always worth checking the latest travel information before you depart for your chosen destination. GB Signage, warning triangles, first aid kits, booster seats, and covid restrictions could be different from when you last travelled. Don’t be the one who gets caught out with a flat tyre or a car that doesn’t start. It can ruin a good holiday. Make sure you are ready for your journey. Before you travel: • • • • •

Check vision – lights, wipers, clean windscreen Check levels – Coolant, Washer fluid and Oil levels Check tyres – tread depth, even wear, no cracks, correct inflation Use the appropriate driving style for the road – don’t take unnecessary risks Make sure you don’t drive when tired

If you are unsure or want help to ensure you can travel safely, book in for a Holiday Safety Check before you travel. We’ll be pleased to help and advise you. Happy holidays and safe travelling from us all at Redbourn Auto Solutions.

The Chilterns Conservation Board say don’t feed Red Kites... and there are six reasons why not to

If you live in or near the Chilterns, you’ll know that red kites are one of Britain’s most magnificent and distinctive birds of prey, with fanned forked tails, a reddish-brown body and a distinctive mewing call. They’re a marvel to see circling overhead. Some people like to feed red kites meat in their gardens to attract large numbers – the birds make dramatic swoops to feed. While this is an impressive spectacle, you should not be feeding red kites. Here are some of the reasons why: 1.

2.

3. 4.

Feeding encourages red kites to become bolder than they naturally would be and to fly too close for comfort. They have sharp claws and a wingspan of around six foot. If the birds become a nuisance this could change public support for the welfare of these birds, perhaps leading us back down the road towards the persecution of red kites – part of the worrying history of these birds. Feeding encourages concentrated numbers of kites in one area. This discourages songbirds and ground nesting birds from feeding and successfully bringing up their young. The scraps of uncooked and cooked meat that people feed red kites don’t present a balanced, healthy diet. Red kites can drop scraps of meat onto neighbouring gardens and properties which is a health risk and attracts rats and vermin (the Conservation Board has even received complaints about scraps of meat dropping directly onto

people’s heads!). Feeding discourages red kites from expanding their range and looking for new breeding territories and sources of food. This disrupts their natural population spread. Red kites can feed and thrive successfully in their natural habitat without our assistance. People were encouraged to feed them during their reintroduction in the 1990s, but now that this species is doing well, feeding is no longer necessary.

In Marlow in 2019 a mother described a quick-thinking red kite swooping to steal sandwiches out of her two young children’s hands, leaving one child with a scratch on its head. This made headlines, but this is not the natural behaviour of these birds – like seagulls they only gain such boldness when people feed them. From Victorian times onwards red kites were persecuted almost to the point of extinction due to misconceptions about their behaviour. People saw them feeding on dead lambs and pheasants and mistakenly thought the kites had killed them. The reality is that red kites are predominantly carrion feeders – they feed mostly on dead animals. Although they’re big birds they weigh less than a bag of sugar and they are too weak footed to catch anything other than a small rabbit. In modern times they do an important job of helping to clear the countryside of dead animals. The persecution of red kites was such that by the 1980s, red kites had become one of only three globally threatened species in the UK. In the 1990s a major conservation project saw the successful reintroduction of red kites in the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural beauty, and now they’re surviving and thriving and public support for these beautiful birds is strong. Kites are a great example of what a successful conservation project can achieve. So please avoid feeding the red kites – it’s far better to enjoy them soaring high above our gardens or in their natural environment on a walk in the Chilterns hills.

For people with certain health conditions, there is further information on the Ramblers’ website including; walking with asthma, walking with diabetes, walking with heart disease and more.

Bogtrotters of Dunstable WELCOME NEW MEMBERS...

Bogtrotters are a Dunstable based group. We alternate between long and short walks (5 miles and up to 14 miles) on Saturdays and Sundays. We also run some short and easy walks. Generally the longer the walk the faster the walkers (particularly on a Thursday). We also do trips away and have social evets on a regular basis... We are a friendly lot and new members are always welcome. You can find a walk you fancy and just turn up - or perhaps ring the walk leader and ask questions. People can try out a few walks with no commitment whatsoever, but if you want to join, membership is only £10 a year. Keep an eye on the website www.Dunstablebogtrotters.co.uk as we are changing the way we organise walks and are currently running a rolling programme as and when leaders are available. 0796 4291892

Redbourn Festival July 2nd - 3rd 2022 Please can you give us a hand?We are now in the final planning stages of the Redbourn Festival. With 2 days of free family fun, it’s going to be the biggest village event for some time. To make sure it runs safely and smoothly, we will need a lot of volunteer help. You can help with the set up, knock down and marshalling during both days. So if you could spend just an hour or so of your time, it would be much appreciated. There will be specific time slots for you to choose. Please call Chris Emmel on 07770 863864

We are a friendly, happy group meeting on the second Tuesday of the month 7:30pm at The Baptist Hall. We have speakers, share ideas and in the summer run trips to interesting gardens. Join us, new members always welcome. Any queries please contact: Sarah 01582419793, Wendy 410126, or Hilary 420159

You may have an informal chat with clients over a cup of tea, discuss their situation and if appropriate, signpost them to further support. HOW MUCH TIME DO I HAVE TO GIVE?
