Freedom at last Our front cover, following on from the theme of the blue bell wood in Ashridge last issue, is to uplift the spirits. After a long winter of lockdown, brighter times are on the horizon so here is a view from the top of the Dunstable Downs. It is one of my favourite spots and everytime I visit, where people fly their kites, I think ‘wow’ at the Independent familyof funeral directors first glance of the view. The power nature has so many beneficial effects for our physical well being and mental health. So it’s time to enjoy the great outdoors, get down to the pub, enjoy a restaurant meal, get back to the shops and the grooming parlours and resist the temptation to buy on line. Oh, and don’t forget to book a staycation if the prices haven’t gone too far through the roof. I hope you like our design changes in the mag.

Litter Squad Hit Markyate Claridge New.indd 2

A team of volunteers have had a blitz on Markyate during Lockdown. Spokesman Nick Robeson said, “Since February we have cleared over 450 bags of litter out of the hedgerows.” It’s great to see so many people having pride in their village, working hard to keep it tidy. Youngsters Zak, Sam and Finn have got on board too. The social media site, Markyate Matters has been bringing people together for this task for over five years now.

Slip End Manager Wins Award Amber Seabrook was chosen as The Face of SheInspires for 2021

3/6/2017 4:01:19 PM

The SheInspires Awards, run by Penny Bird, take place in March each year to shine a light on inspirational women. 14 women were nominated to receive an award, and over 2,000 ‘kudos’ votes of thanks saw Amber Seabrook chosen as The Face of SheInspires for 2021. “Amber manages Woodside Care Home in Slip End and her kindness and caring shines exceptionally bright and warm on everyone in her life. She is also the voice for dementia patients, campaigning for more positive language use around the condition, and raising the profile of care homes which have been largely forgotten. She is hugely inspiring and I’m looking forward to working with her over the next few months to support her initiative with my photography,” said Penny. ‘An Evening of Inspiration’ was held online on 31st March 2021 to congratulate the 13 courageous and passionate women who were given the SheInspires Award this year.

The Google map of public rights of way in Hertfordshire, published by the council less than two years ago, has now been viewed more than one million times. Since the start of the pandemic, our rights of way network has been extremely popular, and use of this tool really took off during the first lockdown. The map can be easily loaded onto your smartphone, making it simple to follow your position on a map as you go. This is the perfect way to help you find and follow the routes close to your home, and to explore over 3000km of rights of way across the county. Our rights of way are a valuable asset, providing endless opportunities for people to get out and active in the countryside. As well as improving health and wellbeing, this can support the goals of the Council’s Local Transport Plan, which prioritises active travel.

RESPONSIBLE INVESTING “MANY PENSION HOLDERS DON’T KNOW THAT THEY CAN CHOOSE THEIR OWN FUNDS, AND THEREFORE THAT THEY CAN CHOOSE SUSTAINABLE OR RESPONSIBLE FUNDS. AROUND HALF ARE UNAWARE OF WAYS TO ENSURE THEIR PENSION IS ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY.”

invest today change tomorrow Responsible, sustainable and environmentally friendly investing is here to stay. But, while demand is growing among all age groups, genders and income bands, some savers and investors are missing their biggest opportunity for responsible investing which is through their pension. We all want to make responsible choices as more of us are becoming aware of global challenges, such as environmental issues, human rights and climate change. We’re also starting to care more about how our behaviours affect the planet and society. FUTURE SUCCESS Taking ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) factors into consideration when investing, is becoming more mainstream. It is acknowledged that companies that act responsibly to their employees, the environment and the public have a better chance of future success than those that don’t. Investing in these companies is a logical approach financially as well as ethically. Many pension holders understand this approach and see the value of it. In a recent survey, more than one-third of respondents said that the option to invest their pension only in sustainable companies is important to them. Nearly two-thirds said having clearly branded funds for investing in environmentally and socially responsible companies is important.

A PENSION IS A LONG-TERM INVESTMENT NOT NORMALLY ACCESSIBLE UNTIL AGE 55 (57 FROM APRIL 2028). THE VALUE OF YOUR INVESTMENTS AND ANY INCOME FROM THEM CAN GO DOWN AS WELL AS UP WHICH WOULD HAVE AN IMPACT ON THE LEVEL OF PENSION BENEFITS AVAILABLE. YOUR PENSION INCOME COULD ALSO BE AFFECTED BY THE INTEREST RATES AT THE TIME YOU TAKE YOUR BENEFITS. THE TAX IMPLICATIONS OF PENSION WITHDRAWAL WILL BE BASED ON YOUR INDIVIDUAL CIRCUMSTANCES, TAX LEGISLATION AND REGULATION WHICH ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE IN THE FUTURE. YOU SHOULD SEEK ADVICE TO UNDERSTAND YOUR OPTIONS AT RETIREMENT. To advertise call 07941 661004

Capital Manor May June article.indd 13

PENSION INVESTMENTS The same survey suggests that pensionholders feel that sustainable investing isn’t just important but interesting. More than half of respondents said that a fund focused on clean energy and lowering carbon would make them more interested in their pension. A similar number felt that way about a zero-plastic fund. But while pension holders feel these issue are important and interesting, that isn’t yet affecting the way they invest. Most people don’t manage their pension investments themselves, instead leaving their pension invested in the default options set by a provider chosen by their workplace. So more than two-thirds of pension holders do not know how sustainable their pension is. ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY Many pension holders don’t know that they can choose their own funds, and therefore that they can choose sustinable or responsible funds. Around half are unaware of ways to ensure their pension is environmentally friendly. Clearly, there is a large audience of individuals who would like to invest their pension more sustainably and responsibly but don’t know where to start. There are plenty of options but without specialist experience, it can be difficult to select those that are truly responsible and environmentally friendly and will also deliver the financial return you’re seeking.

INVESTING WITH PURPOSE Responsible investors essentially take responsibility for the impact that the companies they invest in have on the world. Speak to us about what responsible investing options are available in your pension scheme and for advice on how to help your money have the greatest impact. If you’d like to know more about how we can help you achieve your financial and life goals, please contact us. 16 The Sudden Rise and Demise of the European Super League Football uproar following the announcement of the European Super League has rocked UEFA. Its attempt to create a new football league with the biggest clubs competing against each other was met with a massive backlash from fans. UEFA planned to take Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspurs, Chelsea, Manchester City, Liverpool, Manchester United, Juventus, AC Milan, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Athletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, FC Bayern, and Paris Saint Germain (PSG) all from their respective leagues and combine them to create the Super League. FC Bayern and Borussia Dortmund of Germany’s Bundesliga and PSG of France’s Ligue 1 rejected the invitation and the €425m signing bonus. Soon after, Manchester City also announced that they were pulling out of the Super League due to negative feedback from the fans. Within hours, all other English clubs followed suit. Former players like Gary Lineker, Ian Wright, and Rio Ferdinand were openly condemning the Super League - saying it made other competitions like the Champions League and the Europa League Irrelevant, and that the very idea of introducing this league sacrificed the integrity of the game and its competitive aspect. More and more clubs were rumoured to be surrendering their place in the Super League; Italy’s AC Milan and Inter Milan were both in talks with UEFA discussing their leave of the competition. In just under 48 hours of its announcement, the Super League was crushed by the sheer weight of protest. With the integrity of the game compromised, should the clubs who agreed to participate be penalized? I believe so. The announcement of the Super League showed the defining factor of a top club is money. Money and greed should not define football. The working-class heroes of the past showed that the game is more than that. Markyate teenager Connor Gill To advertise call 07941 661004

Since COVID-19 restrictions, more stalking now takes place online

Stalking is part of a pattern of behaviour that is used to make someone feel afraid, distressed or fearful of violence. It’s serious, persistent and unwanted and can form part of domestic abuse. Stalking is a crime and should always be reported to the police. Since COVID-19 restrictions have come into place, more stalking may now take place online. If someone is contacting you with unwanted texts, messages on social media, unwanted telephone calls or turning up where you are, you need to report it. If you are being stalked, report it to the police and use the words “I am being stalked”. You can report stalking on 101 or via the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Police websites. If you are in immediate danger, call the police on 999 More information can be found too on the Suzy Lamplugh Trust website and the Paladin National Stalking Advocacy Service website. The latest episode of Relationships Shouldn’t Hurt, Beds CC’s Domestic Abuse Service’s podcast, is now available. The episode deals with a difficult subject – what is sexual abuse? The subject matter is sensitive but the podcast contains a lot of information about where to seek help if you have been affected by sexual abuse or sexual violence. Listen to the episode on the Bedfordshire Domestic Abuse Partnership (BDAP) website or find it on Spotify by looking for Relationships Shouldn’t Hurt.

Protect your wealth Making a Will and How to Protect Your Family and Financial Assets It is my firm advice that everyone should have a Will, but if you don’t then it is important to be aware of the consequences of not having one. Without having a Will in place at the time of your death, or if your Will is no longer valid, the law dictates how your estate will be divided in accordance with the Intestacy Rules. These rules could potentially result in your loved ones not benefiting from your estate in the way in which you would have wanted. Why make a Will? Below are some key points of why you should make a Will to help protect your family and assets. •

• • • • •

To avoid your assets being distributed in accordance with the Intestacy Rules which could mean, for instance, your spouse not inheriting all of your estate To ensure that those you wish to inherit your assets on your death get them To nominate executors of your choice to deal with the distribution of your estate To nominate your preferred guardians of your children To make small personal gifts To take advantage of tax saving strategies.

When to update your Will and things to remember The general advice is to review your Will every 5 years, or if you’ve had a change in circumstances in the family particularly births, deaths, decisions to marry, divorce, form or dissolve UK civil partnerships. On marriage or entering a civil partnership (or remarriage or a new civil partnership), your old Will is automatically revoked and has no effect, unless it has been made in contemplation of that marriage or civil partnership and contains a relevant statement to that effect. If you pass away without making a new Will your estate will pass to a list of your relatives specified by law under the Intestacy Rules. On divorce, any gift in your old Will to your ex-spouse or civil partner is cancelled as is their appointment as Executor but the rest of the Will stands. This can create problems so normally it is better to make a new Will.

understandable with costs starting from as little as £10 for a Will pack, and there are also many online companies offering to make your Will for you for a low fee. However, there are disadvantages that comes along with homemade Wills and below are just some to keep in mind before making the commitment. 1. Poor wording and mistakes – Without legal training, DIY Wills can be a minefield. If your wording is incorrect or unclear, you run the risk of your wishes not being fulfilled. 2. Witnesses – DIY Wills are often incorrectly signed and witnessed, which leads to them ultimately being invalid. This is where the presence of a qualified professional is beneficial, as they ensure mishaps are avoided. 3. Complexities – If you own property abroad, you have foreign investments, or you own a business, you should seek assistance when you it comes to drafting your Will. You want to make sure everything goes to the right person, and complex scenarios aren’t easily catered for in the one-size-fits-all DIY option. A Will is a legal document, and, as such, legal advice should be sought when you’re in the process of drawing one up. Whether your Will is simple or multifaceted, the advice that a professional can give you is invaluable and can get you to think about things that may have been overlooked. Having in place a valid Will ensures your loved ones will be well looked after when the time comes. Please contact Kirsty if you are looking to make a Will or to update one. Can you be green with Diesel

or Petrol cars? By Melanie Wooding Jones – Redbourn Auto Solutions

We’re all acutely aware of climate change and take accountability for reducing waste, reusing where we can, and recycling. But what about our responsibility in reducing emissions? Diesel and petrol engines have come under intense scrutiny over the last few years as we pursue a greener way of living. With the cost of a new electric car out of reach for many, and a limited supply of used cars, it is time to look at how we can help reduce emissions in our engines…. How detrimental is it to the environment? Exhaust emissions from combustion engines are considered as one of the largest contributors to environmental pollution (whether car, aircraft, or other), and they are responsible for several health problems as well. Many policies have been imposed worldwide in recent years to reduce negative effects of engine emissions including the introduction of emission testing as part of the MOT test and ban of diesel and petrol new car sales by 2030 and hybrid by 2035. What causes harmful emissions? Any restriction to the flow of air into the engine can cause excessive smoke emissions. This includes the air filter, air inlet pipes or ducts, and the intake manifold. Similar to the air filter and inlet ducts, the turbo pressure also can affect the smoke emissions of a diesel engine. Soot accumulation in any engine is frequent, and an inevitable affliction of a diesel engine. When the air and fuel mixture that powers the engine fails to completely ignite to produce its energy potential, there is surplus residue. It is rare that an engine combusts fuel completely, so most engines produce some amount of soot. It is a common misconception that soot doesn’t occur in petrol engines – it does! Petrol engines combust fuel and expel exhaust more efficiently, so soot problems are less common.

What do car manufacturers do to help reduce emissions? The reality is that all engines have soot residue that needs to be managed effectively, so the manufacturers have different control systems to help manage the emissions they produce. This ranges from the fuel and oil to use, to the parts and systems within the car to minimise soot deposits and emission (such as diesel oxidation catalyst, diesel particulate filter and selective catalytic reduction). Naturally, for these parts to be effective it is crucial for them to be regularly maintained. How do I know there is an accumulation of soot? Excessive soot can indicate the need for an oil change, but equally could indicate more serious underlying problems. Soot thickens oil and negatively affects viscosity and its ability to move through the engine. This means the engine has to work harder to start and run, and the circulation of soot contributes to the formation of varnish and carbon deposits throughout the engine. This can wear down valves and seals, reduces efficiency and eventually causes failure. A congealed mass of soot (sludge) is a leading cause of premature failure in diesel engines. Common indications can be: • • • • •

Darker oil, which will turn black over time Higher running costs with an increase in oil and fuel consumption High exhaust emissions, which are an MOT failure An orange light on dashboard – either an engine or DPF malfunction Engine performance which affects the car’s drivability such as stumbling, stalling, misfiring and hesitation, all of which indicate potential engine efficiency problems.

(continued from page 24)

Because the build up is slow, you may not even notice that the car is not operating at optimum performance… and yet, it is so important to the car and the environment. What can I do to reduce the emissions in my car? Where the only option is to travel by car, the Environmental Protection UK, encourage us to: • • • • •

Avoid using cars for short journeys – combine trips, walk or cycle Lighten up – roof racks add drag and other unnecessary weight increases fuel consumption Drive gently – racing starts and sudden stops increase fuel consumption. Use higher gears when traffic conditions allow Steady your speed – at around 50mph emissions will be lowest, rising dramatically above 70mph Switch off when stationary – if stuck in traffic or stopping more than a minute. Do not run the engine unnecessarily and drive off soon after starting Be considerate to those around you – reduce the volume of your car stereo and avoid revving your engine

Most importantly: • Care for your vehicle – check tuning, tyre pressure, brakes and fuel consumption – regular servicing helps keep your car efficient and saves fuel • Tyres – keep them at the right inflation for your make, model and load. When they need replacing consider low rolling resistance replacements • Investigate alternatives – If you’re looking for a new car there are a number of different technologies and fuels available. Ask, and we can help you find the right car for you. How can my car garage/mechanic help? By keeping up to date with regular servicing, you are ensuring your filters and oil are changed in accordance to the manufacturer’s specification. This will help reduce build up. If the engine is maintained properly, you are ensuring your filters and oil are changed in accordance to the manufacturers specification to help prevent build up. Incidental amounts of soot rarely cause catastrophic engine failure but once the damage is done, it is

To advertise call 07941 661004

Page 24-26 Redbourn Autos.indd 26

expensive to repair and sometimes not economically viable to repair. Many own a pre-loved car, which means if it hasn’t been properly maintained throughout its life, the condition of the engine is uncertain. So, it is always better to be safe and ensure a full service on the vehicle is conducted with a carbon clean. What is a carbon clean? Cars are designed to regenerate and ‘burn-off’ soot at defined intervals. However, this does not prevent carbon accumulation completely and even less so in older cars or cars that travel regular short distances, so it is recommended to complete a carbon clean every 15,000 miles.

With some carbon cleaning products claiming a 72% reduction in emissions, 15% fuel saving and 20% improvement in engine power, it is hard to ignore the environmental benefits. Carbon cleaning specialists and a few garages will have the dedicated equipment to conduct an engine carbon clean which completely removes problematic deposits from the combustion chambers, injectors, throttle body, inlet valves, Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) manifolds and Diesel Particulate Filter. It is effective cleaning for petrol and diesel engines, restoring original fuel flow, allowing for maximum fuel efficiency. A carbon clean will ensure longevity and protect parts which would be expensive to replace. It reduces exhaust emissions, restores fuel economy and engine performance, removes carbon deposits and cleans injectors. Is it worth it? Yes! It’s worth investing as replacement parts such as a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) will set you back between £1,000-£3,500 (dependent on your car), which could render your car an uneconomic repair. So, don’t be disheartened if you don’t have an electric car; you can still be as environmentally friendly as you can be with your pride and joy, by taking simple steps. At the very least this should include a rigorous maintenance routine. Give us a call at Redbourn Auto Solutions for advice on servicing or carbon cleaning. We have the specialist carbon cleaning equipment. So if you haven’t had yours done yet, let us help you feel the difference in your drive!

It’s time to let imaginations run wild as kids explore over 7,800 square metres of themed play area, including bridges, swings, climbing frames, sit-on crocodiles, tunnels, boats, mini safari jeeps and so much more. Packed with little surprises and sensory delights, we just can’t wait! ALL ZOO TICKETS MUST BE BOOKED ONLINE IN ADVANCE Under 3s and ZSL members go free. 24th Jul - 5th Sep 2021 This summer, take your family on an adventure back in time to experience over twenty life-like dinosaurs at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo. A dinosaur-packed day out with the kids this summer holiday. Whipsnade Zoo will be hosting an immersive exhibition of life-size animatronic dinosaurs sure to thrill any dino-mad kids (and grown-ups).
