CONTACTS

Dear Readers, I include a photo taken at The Full Monty, by Harpenden Musical Theatre Company on 20th March at Harpenden Halls. Rumours abounded that this produc on was ‘the fully monty’ no holding back, nothing but naked male bodies, and no hats on at the big finale. I took this photo as the 99% female audience sat on the edge of our chairs to find out if the gossip was true. Would they go 100% ‘full monty’? To end the suspense, the answer was no, not quite. They did indeed keep their hats on! It was a great show, very entertaining but I was slightly disappointed that it was based in Buffalo, New York state and not Sheffield, South Yorkshire as per the film. Being a northerner, who worked in Sheffield for a couple of years, I could so iden fy with the unemployment issue in the 1980s, and the club entertainment culture in which so many ordinary partook. It was life in a Northern English City which inspired the storyline to this fabulous film so adap ng to unknown Buffalo was a li le trying to me. I was pleased that much of the same music was used, including Tom Jones’ mandatory ‘You Can Leave Your Hat On’.

New charity ‘Music for my Mind’ for people living with dementia

The new charity Music for my Mind, founded in 2017 by Professor Keith McAdam DL FRCP Redbourn resident, has launched its first crowdfunding campaign. The charity’s purpose is to bring personalised favourite music to people living with demen a. People with severe Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of demen a may not recognise lovedones but can s ll respond and even sing along to music from their teenage era. Music for my Mind’s ini al financial goal of £100,000 will allow them to commence work on pilot studies to show that music should be part of the standard of care for people living with demen a. Funds raised through the campaign will help the charity to find an efficient way to build personal playlists, to monitor how and when and what genre of music improves moods. They will recruit a small experienced team to take the project forward, establish key rela onships with care homes, health organisa ons and technology companies. Music for my Mind is working through leading music streaming service Spo fy in compiling personalised playlists from a person’s teenage years, using the program’s recommenda on service. The charity is aiming to provide evidence that music improves quality of life and the wellbeing of those affected beneficial not only to the people living with demen a but also their carers. For more informa on on how you can help Music for my Mind improve the lives of the 850,000 people living with demen a in the UK and 50 million worldwide (World Health Organiza on, December 2017) please visit h ps://musicformymind.hubbub.net/. Celebrating Women Local photographer Penny Bird invited Harpenden residents to nominate and vote for inspira onal, selfless women in their midst, women who give their all to the town community, but who are seldom recognised for their wonderful contribu ons. “I used Facebook to run the poll to help us mark Women’s History Month in March and I was blown away by the fantas c response – over 4,000 people viewed the post and nearly 300 joined in to shout out for special women.

Janet Crawley was voted Harpenden’s most inspira onal woman; she cares for demen a pa ents at St Ma hews Care Home in Redbourn and works relessly promo ng awareness of the disease.

Janet Crawley, a part me Lifestyle and Engagement Lead at St Ma hews Care Home in Redbourn, received almost a quarter of the votes. Penny Bird offered to do a portrait series of her at work to recognise her wonderful contribu on to the Harpenden community. Janet told us a li le about her affinity with demen a pa ents. “I am really thrilled to have won the portrait session, not for myself, but because it will help to spread awareness of demen a. “I became drawn to demen a about nine years ago when I was recovering from a life changing illness. The pull was so strong, I did an online degree through the Hopkins University in America. When I work with demen a pa ents, I feel an incredible rapport and connec on with them. It is almost as if I can see them: their pain, their sadness and their loss. I know I can help them, and that I am meant to help them. I seem to be blessed with a knack of soothing them when they get agitated. “I am rewarded daily with smiles, joy and laughter. Even the late demen a pa ents who don’t communicate anymore, put their arms out to me when they recognise my voice. I love them all and the passion of caring for them brings meaning to my life.”

FLAMSTEAD resident Monica Carrera has taken charge of the village coffee shop It’s good news for Flamstead, to help keep alive a vital community hub. Monica, who moved to the village five years ago from Devon, wanted to ensure that Coffee Dog stayed open when the previous owner decided on a change of direc on. And having forged a love of coffee in a former job which took her on regular trips to Italy, she signed up on a barista course and decided to take over the shop. Monica explained: "It was the perfect opportunity to engage with the community and provide a muchneeded mee ng and social space where people can chat and relax; but I want to give everyone a friendly welcome whether they live in the village or not. A er all you're only a stranger un l you say hello. The building which is Grade 11 listed also has a beau ful ambience too." The coffee shop at the back of The Spo ed Dog pub has become a wellknown focal point for villagers but now, also a racts ramblers and cyclists as well as tourists from outside

Flamstead; visi ng the medieval wall pain ngs in St.Leonard's Church next door or those just wan ng a leisurely stop off. In addi on to a great array of different types of coffee, Monica also serves a range of specialist loose teas, milk shakes and delicious homemade cakes, brownies, flapjacks and croissants. Takeaways are also available for those in a hurry or on the way to work. There is also free WiFi if you can't leave your laptop at home. Coffee Dog is open at High Street, Flamstead from 8am to 12 noon every day except Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

Are your calories creeping up? Many of us consume more calories than we realise – an average of 200 to 300 extra calories per day. Over me, these extra calories can creep up and cause unhealthy weight gain. However, if you can s ck to around 400 calories for breakfast, 600 calories for lunch and 600 calories for dinner, plus a couple of healthier snacks and drinks inbetween, it will really help to manage your weight. A calorie checker is available on the NHS website to help you eat a li le healthier.

Markyate Fire Fighters clean our vehicles for just £4

33

Words and photos by Sue Mitchell I joined the steady flow of vehicles, (including cars, vans and horseboxes) being washed by an energetic team of fire fighters in Markyate on 24th March. This was part of the National Fire Fighters Charity campaign and as it was close to Easter, they included an Easter Egg hunt in the tower for the children at a cost of £3. The team were busy from 11am until 3pm and people could also gift aid money to the charity. I was delighted with my sparkling clean car for just £4. The team of Fire Fighters raised £706.50 on the day for the charity.

How could you say no to this happy chappy?

New Team Rooms for Redbourn Words and photos by Sue Mitchell

The grade II listed building on the High Street which has been empty for over two years, came back to life at the beginning of March when the Enchanted Tea Rooms was opened. Sisters and business partners, Alexandra and Andrea Myrianthous decided to combine their catering expertise to offer a new and exciting service to the village. Alexandra has always worked in catering. She managed a Costa Coffee in Milton Keynes until recently and Andrea has a degree in Hospitality and has worked in 5-star hotels and restaurants. Together, they have a lot of experience of the business and with an added ingredient of artistic flair, they look to be onto a winner. MiMag’s advertisement manager Janet Brown and I went to enjoy some pre-Easter lunch with them - and the place was packed. As we were leaving, a party of mothers and school children went upstairs to the very special Children’s Tea Room on the first floor for an end-ofterm celebration.

“One look at the room (children’s tea room) and you can imagine a scene from Alice in Wonderland!” You can see from the photos that the tea room has lots of old-fashioned charm with the juxtaposition of non-matching cups and saucers, tea-pots, period furniture and light-fittings, all arranged in this 18th century building, spread across five rooms on two floors. By contrast to the décor, the menu is modern and contemporary. Tea is their speciality and afternoon tea is competitively priced at £19.95; with a prosecco option for £23.95 and champagne for just £24.95! I counted 19 speciality teas on the menu and I chose Blood Orange with my colleague opting for Ginger Lemon explosion. Coffee lovers will be just as happy with ten options, plus blended coffees; four hot chocolate choices, iced drinks, soft drinks, milk shakes and fruit juices and smoothies.

1533 The range of food on the menu is also wide ranging and modern - and if you are vegetarian or need gluten free, you are amply catered for.

Afternoon Tea for Children This is a novel idea. There is a special tea room upstairs with an imposing mural depicting an enchanted wood where children can have tea parties and be little adults for the afternoon. The Enchanted Afternoon tea for under 12s is just £9.95 per head. One look at the room and you can imagine a scene from Alice in Wonderland!

About this historic Grade II listed building on the High Street The building has a history of catering, starting life as the Crown Public House from 1755 until 1910. When the Nickey Line took much of the travellers away from Watling Street and onto the railway network, the Crown lost business and closed. It later became a tea room called the Copper Kettle and then the successful Country House Restaurant which thrived in the 1960s. More recently it has been an Italian and a Thai restaurant. Today it is a tea-room once more – The Enchanted Tea Rooms

The Story of Local Hero Lt. Col. John CollingsWells VC DSO Ar cle by Terri Aubrey (extracts from ‘King, Country and Caddington’)

Markyate ceremony where Sir Mike Penning MP and Mayor, Councillor David Collins unveiled the stone at the memorial

To mark the 100th year since a local first world war hero died, the Parish Councils and History Groups of Markyate and Caddington organised the unveiling of stones to honour Lieutenant Colonel John CollingsWells. This took place in two separate ceremonies on 27th March. Villagers, officials and CollingsWells’ family members from across the country, gathered in good numbers to learn about and respect this remarkable man. I a ended both unveilings and a erwards enjoyed talking to family members, organisers, volunteer caterers and members of the Beds and Herts Regimental Museum Trust over a cup of tea and excellent refreshments in the CollingsWells Hall in Caddington. Later that day, my colleague, Janet Brown, visited the Wardown Park Museum in Luton where Lt Col John CollingsWells’ Victoria Cross, other medals and memorabilia were on display. It was a humbling experience to learn how one excep onally brave, militarily astute man achieved so much to lead his men in trench warfare, having accomplished his mission, only to then lose his own life at the age of 38 years, just eight months before the end of the war. For those of you who could or did not a end, here is his fascina ng lifestory.” Sue Mitchell, Editor of MiMagazine. JOHN COLLINGSWELLS, known as Jack to his family, was born to Arthur and Caroline CollingsWells on the 19th July 1880. He was educated at Uppingham Public School in Rutland and Christ Church College Oxford where he was cox for the college rowing eight. The family moved to Caddington Hall when he was seventeen. The 1901 census gives some idea of the family’s wealth and shows that they employed a cook, two housemaids, a lady’s maid, a kitchen maid and a footman as well as a gardener who lived in the Hall’s lodge. John’s father, Arthur, was an extremely successful mechanical engineer and before the war, John helped to run the family engineering business in Manchester. At this me, he stayed at Field House in Marple, Stockport, the home of an uncle, William Buck. Buck described John as

having a lively, sociable disposi on which made him a welcome addi on to the family circle, as well as being very useful in the garden. In 1904, John was commissioned into the Bedfordshire Regiment a er serving in the Her ordshire Mili a. He became first a Lieutenant and then in 1907, a Captain. When war broke out in 1914 he was immediately mobilised and travelled to France, where he served with the 2nd Bedfordshire Ba alion un l 1916. In early January 1915 he was badly wounded while in the frontline trenches at Fleurbaix. He sustained an entry and exit bullet wound to his thigh and was invalided home to recuperate. Later he returned to France where he joined the 4th Bedfordshires as a Major; then fought in ac ons on the Somme, at Ancre in 1916 and at Ypres. By 1916 he was promoted to Ac ng LieutenantColonel, CollingsWells’ family becoming second in command and then Commander of the Ba alion. In 1917 he was awarded the DSO for leading a ba alion that captured and held the northern outskirts of the town of Gavrelle during the Ba le of Arras. Later an a ack on the Oppy trenches was also recognised. His cita on in the London Gaze e of 18th July 1917 read, “For conspicuous gallantry in command of a ba alion in holding its objec ves against heavy counter a acks, and later his leadership and bravery in forming and leading a composite ba alion which achieved its objec ves under very adverse circumstances.”

17 The collapse of Russia in 1917 enabled Germany to bring huge reinforcements from the Russian Front to mount a devasta ng a ack on the allied armies in France, in a final bid to end the war. The German Spring Offensive started on 21st March 1918. Over six con nuous days Lt. Colonel CollingsWells led his men to stem the enemy offensive facing mustard gas, shells and explosives. On March 25th during the withdrawal from Highwood to Thiepval Ridge, the rear guard was almost surrounded and in great danger of being captured. Lt. Colonel CollingsWells, realised the situa on and Memorial stone at Markyate called for volunteers to remain behind and hold up the enemy whilst the remainder withdrew. With this small company of volunteers, he held the enemy for one and a half hours un l they had used every round of ammuni on. During this me, he moved freely among his men and by his great courage undoubtedly saved the situa on. On March 27th, his Ba alion, north of the town of Albert, was ordered to counter a ack. Knowing his men were exhausted a er six days of figh ng and having had very li le sleep, he placed himself at the front and led the a ack. Twice wounded and facing overwhelming odds, he con nued to lead and encourage his men un l the trench where he had been physically dragged to have his wounds a ended to, took a direct hit from a mortar shell and he was killed atthemoment of gaining the objec ve. His courage was responsible for the success of the opera on and for this he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross. He was men oned in Despatches for his successes and in the Times newspaper published on the 16th April 1918. A correspondent wrote, “he possessed a wonderful grasp of detail and great organising ability. He raised his ba alion to a pitch of high efficiency and spared no efforts to promote the welfare and comfort of his men.” The family received a le er dated 3rd May 1918, signed by the King which said: “It is a ma er of sincere regret to me that the death of Ac ng LieutenantColonel John Stanhope CollingsWells DSO, 4th Ba alion Bedfordshire Regiment, deprived me of the pride of personally conferring upon him the Victoria Cross, the greatest of all rewards for valour and devo on to duty.” His parents were presented with their son’s decora on at Buckingham Palace on 1st June 1918. Mrs CollingsWells wrote the following account to her daughter Betha. “We were to be there at 10.00am. We started from home in the li le motor at 7.45am to catch the 8.15am train to London. As fate would have it, the car broke down at Woodside and refused to go another yard, so there was nothing to do but to walk. We set off steadily, Father in London clothes and high hat and I, in my best frock and hat etc. We caught the next train at 8.55am and were in London by 10.00am.” The le er goes on to tell of a face to face mee ng with King George, who congratulated them on having such a gallant son. He expressed sympathy for their loss, saying, “His ac on during those six days was one of the bravest and most wonderful during the war.” The medal was then presented. A erwards they went out into Green Park where they were

London Luton Airport (LLA) Public Surgery Markyate Y2K Hall 15th March

This is the second Luton Airport Public Surgery I have a ended at Y2K in less than two years and I was pleased to see that the airport takes public opinion and welfare very seriously. A dedicated Flight Opera ons Department is there to monitor noise levels, define takeoff and landing routes to avoid the higher concentra ons of dwellings, test and implement procedures for takeoff and landing and fine airlines who do not comply with the guidelines. People will always complain about increasing airtraffic but I say, ‘Stay reasonable with your complaints if you ever take a plane to your holiday des na ons or for business trips.’ Airports are great so long as they are ‘not in my back yard’, is a common mindset but if you live within a 5mile radius of an airport, the traffic is going to increase, so come to terms with it or move. I overheard a male a endee who lives in Jockey End (10.5 miles from LLA), complaining bi erly to an LLA representa ve. Seriously, is the noise disturbance that annoying in Jockey End? Apparently, he is thinking about moving to the Pennines so he had be er check

out Newcastle and Leeds airports before he does! One of the staff said, “Some people’s noise tolerance is significantly less than others.” It seems that some can live right under the flight path quite happily where as others have to reach for the earphones when the dot of an aircra appears in the sky! Increasing traffic doesn’t necessarily mean more noise and disturbance however. James Dontas, Flight Opera ons Manager told me, “Modern aircra are becoming less noisy as the technology improves.”

A Website ‘Must Visit’ View aircra taking off and landing LIVE. This is fascina ng. Log on to h p://travisltn.topsonic.aero/ You will see all the takeoffs and landings at Luton Airport; you can track the flights, the carriers, the aircra , the noise levels being recorded, the height, speed, distance etc. It’s like being an air traffic controller – without the responsibility! You can click a link to complain too!

Did you know? The airport opened in 1938 so it has been there longer than everyone who is under the age of 80! Luton Airport expects to process 16.5 million passengers in 2018. This will rise to 18 million by 2021 and es mated at 38 million by 2050 as air travel and transport becomes more and more popular.

88% of arriving aircra used Con nuous Descent Approach (CDA) procedures in December and January This keeps aircra higher for longer and reduces noise at ground level. However, strong winds can affect compliance.

To contact the team, email noise@ltn.aero or phone 01582 395382

LLA operates a Noise Insula on Scheme for proper es close to the airport, such as Luton South and Breachwood Green. If proper es are eligible, they will be fi ed with high performance glazing and ven la on systems foc. I doubt that any proper es in the MiMagazine circula on area would qualify however.

Interes ng Results of the most recent Monitoring Period During a recent monitoring period, in which 15,654 air traffic movements were handled by LLA, the Flamstead Noise Results showed that most aircra movements were with the Airbus A320 (1745) which had an average noise level of 65 db. The noisiest aircra , the B739 is 69.5 db but there were only 39 movements with this one. For the Markyate Noise Results, the Airbus A320 had the most movements (1178) at 63.37 db and the nosiest, the B739 (21 movements) was 66.4db. The explana on for why the noise level was higher in Flamstead than Markyate, eventhough aircra fly typically at 2,815 above Flamstead and 2,760 above Markyate, is that the noise monitor at Markyate was 1100m from the centreline, whereas the monitor at Flamstead was closer at only 900m from the centreline. The Noise Monitoring Programme for 2018 is available to view on line. 88% of westerly departures, which covers our area, passed through the 2km ‘gate’ between Markyate and Flamstead during the monitoring period 99% of depar ng aircra complied with departure procedures in December and January

EMMA’S TALL CHALLENGE TO RAISE FUNDS FOR CHARITY

Ben Nevis here she comes Emma Jenkins has set herself a goal of climbing Ben Nevis for charity. Britain’s highest mountain is always a challenging climb, but for Emma, it will be the equivalent of climbing Everest. Emma, from Redbourn, has had Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (M.E.) for around 20 years. She is asking for people to support her by donating to her chosen charity – The ME Association. Her health is much better than it was, but her journey of recovery is far from over so the challenge will have to be planned meticulously to make sure that the impact of the climb is kept to a minimum. When her ME was at its worst, Emma was trapped in bed, in pain and lonely. She says that she felt imprisoned, unable to sleep for weeks and too weak even to feed

herself. She struggled to find foods that she didn’t react to. These were dark years of mental and physical agony made worse by the judgement from others who could not understand the illness. Emma says, “I hoped that I would be fully recovered by now, but I appreciate my life how it is now because it had been so much worse. I am now happily married; however I still have to pace my energy levels and my immune system is still not as good as it could be. I still need to work part-time and have to lay in until 12pm on most days.” Emma, supported by her husband Pete, has already climbed Scafell Pike and Skiddaw and they now plan to travel to Scotland to scale the heights of Ben Nevis this May. All the money raised will go towards the ME Association, a charity that funds research into the condition, which affects 1-in-250 people across the UK. Every stage of the journey – both to Scotland and up the mountain – is being carefully planned and scheduled to minimise the impact on her illness. Emma and Pete are especially grateful to Steve Griffiths of South Mimms Travel who is supporting their flight costs so that her journey is as stress free as possible. You can support Emma’s fundraising and read more of her story here https://www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/emmajenkins44

6th Anniversary for The Fête du Vélo

33 Councillor Annie Brewster & Simon Barnes

A Redbourn highlight in the Social Calendar The Fête du Vélo is celebrating its 6th anniversary this year on 1st July 2018. The event was inspired by The Hub (cyclists’ coffee bar in Redbourn) and is based on the theme of “fêtes” in small towns, seen all over France in the summer, usually to honour The Tour de France cyclists. The 10-hour-day starts with running events, which are popular with locals. This is followed by a series of cycling events from children on scooters to veteran runners. Whilst all this is going on over closed roads, The Common is populated with trade stalls, refreshment wagons selling a variety of hot and cold food and a beer tent. There is even a local live band to add to the atmosphere! Last year the event was featured in Channel 4’s “Village of the Year” and it was great to see footage of the lovely sunny day, busy with cyclists, spectators and other entertainers on our TV screens this winter. Turn up early, and join the thousands of people who usually turn out to enjoy the fun, serious sport and festivities. There is no entry charge.

This is a “not-for-profit” event but it is expensive to organise and run so they are looking for local businesses who want to book a trade stand in order to promote their goods or services to the crowds. They would get a good return for a cash donation. Any profit is donated to local Redbourn charities. To book a trade stand, contact Lindy Fox on 07977 584059

Watch Out – There’s a Thief About Burglary Prevention and Home Security Advice Studham Women’s Institute meeting at the Village Hall 5th April Words and photos by Sue Mitchell

With a spate of burglaries being reported around the villages, it was very interesting to hear what guest speaker, John Haggerwood had to say. John is a Home Security Adviser to the ‘Bobby Scheme’, an initiative of Bedfordshire Police Partnership Trust. The WI hold regular talks to which guests and non-members are invited at a cost of just £3 per head. My husband and I went along to the Bobby Scheme talk to see if we could pick up a few security tips. John began his talk by explaining that the Bobby Scheme offers a courtesy home security service for the elderly (over 65 years), disabled and anyone who is deemed vulnerable. They will install for example, key safes (a charge is made for the safe of around £60) or fire alarms, and light timer plugs. The bobby men are trained lock fitters and crime prevention advisers and the service is free except for a nominal fee to cover the cost of some equipment supplied. The scheme was launched in 1997 with a grant from lottery funding and funds are now raised through various corporate and individual donations. The scheme costs in excess of £100,000 per year to run so donations are very welcome.

A typical burglary is as follows:

The burglar(s) will be in your property for 5-7 minutes. The first stop is the master bedroom. They look for jewellery in cabinets and dressingtable drawers but they know that a lot of people put valuables and cash on top of wardrobes, and under the mattress. So, don’t think these places are safe! Be thoughtful to the fact that burglars like darkness and an easy exit route so make everything light up when approached and make the exit route difficult to get through. John went on to give general tips to avoid being burgled.

Tips to secure the outside of your property: • • • • • ` • •

Bolts on gates make it hard to get in and out of you back garden Don’t leave ladders around Use security lights. Don’t leave dark areas. Use 5-lever doors. There are 2,000 key combinations for a 5-lever door but only 16 for a 3-lever door. Always lift the handle to fully secure a 5-lever door.It prevents burglars from ‘popping’ the door Wave when leaving the house. An opportunist burglar will think there is still someone at home. 32 Tips to secure the inside • • • •

Put valuables in unlikely places such as a dumby tin of soup or inside a pan in the drawer. Get sash jammers fitted for double glazed windows – burglars can pop the hinges of many windows. Fit window alarms or always use the bolts or locks Put security stickers on the glass

Use ‘smart water’ to mark your valuables. Smart water can be purchased on line or from your Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinator. Items painted with this substance are marked for life with a unique DNA. Smart water is registered to you. It does not go away when precious metals for example, are melted down. Emergency Lions – It is a small tube box which contains your personal ID and Medication record. It is normally kept in the fridge and a sticker is mounted on the fridge to allow emergency services to know that it is there.

How to quell the tide?

Never buy goods or services that are too good to be true. If the price is low, the goods are likely to have been stolen or if the service is cheap, your rubble or gardening material will probably be dumped illegally or fly-tipped. There are many convincing con-men out there. Think twice and be suspicious. Be on alert and ask for a second opinion before parting with your money. John relayed some jaw-dropping stories of how people had given their money or credit cards to con-men.

Dash Cameras –

Focussed on reducing crime or hyped-up gadget? By Melanie Wooding Jones, Redbourn Auto Solutions, caring for you and your car In-car cameras recording everything, seem to be the way forward for unequivocal evidence for insurance claims, claims identifying dangerous drivers or scams. So, is this gadget the latest must have, or something we can all live without? Are they legal?

The short answer is yes! Dash cams, helmet cams and bike cams are all considered legal on UK roads. They are easy to fit with no special permission to be sought and some may even see them as a necessity in litigation when disputes arise. However, drivers should exercise caution when using them abroad as some countries still view them as a significant invasion of privacy. If the car is not solely for your own personal use, such as taxi drivers, car sharers, company car drivers, driving instructors, etc. then you need to make others aware that a dash cam has been fitted Dash cam footage is recognised and regularly used through the UK justice system. They have even been used to report pot holes and help get a parking fine refunded.

Does it affect my insurance premium?

It makes sense that if a piece of equipment can identify culpability and resolve disputes swiftly, then an insurer will support their usage! Many of the large insurers offer 10-20% discount dependent on the model you install. Understandably, they will ensure you are using them properly. They may insist on professional fitting, recording every journey and be able to provide footage whenever a request is made. It can even improve your driving! Because of the continual monitoring, drivers become more conscious of any adverse habits they have inadvertently developed and adjust their driving accordingly.

What are the downsides? Whilst it is easy to focus on capturing others’ mishaps, it is also recording your own mishaps, so it can work against you. In addition they could be considered to be an obstruction in the windscreen, so need to be placed sensibly and lawfully. Insurers are well known for avoiding payment where To adverse call 01582 965760

they can, so if any of their stipulations have been breached, don’t expect a pay out!

Which Dash Cam?

If, on balance, you have decided that a dash cam is a good idea, you’ll be left with a wide selection; so how do you choose the right one for you? The first thing to consider is how much of the vehicle you want to protect… • Front Facing These are the most common forms of dash cam as they are affordable and easy to install. The majority will fix straight into your 12v socket and record the view ahead. • Dual Facing – front and rear These will record what happens in front and behind you, but it is usually more complex to fit the two lenses into the front and rear. Some need professional fitting and are likely to be more expensive than a single lens. Another important thing to consider is the quality of the picture and the additional capabilities that will personalise the system to your needs: • Video Capture Dash cams vary in the quality of how detailed and clear the picture is. Purchase the wrong one and the footage may not be good enough to determine exactly what happened. Look for one with a high resolution (1,920x1,080 pixels as a minimum). Read more: https://www.which.co.uk/reviews/dash-cams/ article/top-dash-cams - Which? • Night time recording If you conduct a lot of night time driving, it is worth ensuring the camera is good during more difficult visual conditions. • GPS This will help you track your route, where you are and how fast you are travelling. Invaluable information in determining what happened in a crash. • Anti-Glare polarising filter This helps reduce windscreen reflections and headlight glare. • G Force sensor Dash cams record on a continuous loop, which means when the SD card is full, they record over previous footage. A G-force sensor measures the crash impact and protects the footage automatically. • Wi-Fi connectivity Will enable you to download your footage onto an alternative storage. Please menon

• Parking mode This will automatically record if your car is subjected to a collision. Useful for identifying cause of parking bumps and scratches.

Independent, AutoExpress or TechAdvisor, Nextbase seems to always comes out on top. Identify the camera that best suits your needs and do your homework to find the best deal for your pocket.

Think about…

So, would you want one?

• SD Cards Most cameras come with an SD card supplied but it is worth checking. If you need to buy one then ensure it is compatible and recommended by the manufacturer. There is little point spending out on a quality camera for the footage to be stored on inferior storage. • Installation Can it be fitted yourself and if you would prefer the wires to be stored neatly away, it may require more caballing, so look for one with a range to suit your vehicle. • Connectivity Some allow connectivity via an app to your smart phone or directly via wi-fi to your device allowing for easier review. Some also allow you to see in real time. Some insurers insist on certain brands, with the majority featuring (and some insisting on) Nextbase as their favoured brand. The consumer organisation, Which?, rigorously test products and their recommendations are highly regarded. It is no surprise that their in-depth findings concur with the insurance companies. No matter which top recommendations you review – The

Redbourn autosmay.indd 35

The evidence is resoundingly compelling! It reduces your insurance: According to the Association of British Insurers, the average car insurance premium for comprehensive cover is £485 (Jan 2018). Apply a discount of 10-20% and you could save £48.00-96.00, dependent on your premium. It’s the eyes and ears of the law: It supports justice, whether a parking fine, motoring offence, dangerous driving, cash for crash scams or submitting pot hole claims! Cost: It doesn’t have to be expensive, and the more technology improves, the more affordable it will become.

So, if you have the funds to put one on your dashboard and have the confidence in the quality of your own driving, then why not consider one?

New Thriller, The Outer Circle by local author supports the St Leonard’s fund

Flamstead author Ian Ridley has swapped the buzz of sports books for the excitement of writing a thriller, The Outer Circle Ian, writer of 12 sports books including Sober, the recent Sunday Times bestselling autobiography of former Arsenal and England captain Tony Adams and sequel to Addicted, has just seen his debut novel The Outer Circle, published by Unbound. The book takes as its starting point the day after the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games in London 2012 and imagines a lone figure walking into Regent’s Park Mosque in London to commit an atrocity. From then on it follows five very different characters

caught up in the drama, including a national newspaper journalist and a young Muslim, before a dramatic ending five days later. Ian, best known as a football writer for newspapers including The Guardian and Mail on Sunday said, “I’d always wanted to write a novel and finally I got around to it. I hope it combines good writing with a good plot and some memorable characters. “I certainly got caught up in following them and seeing where the story took them and I hope others will too. And hopefully I can raise a bit of money locally for the roof appeal too as every penny counts.”

CALLING ALL WOMEN

YOU ARE NEVER TOO BUSY TO GO FOR A ROUTINE BREAST CANCER SCREENING All women should read this personal experience by Sarah Williams, former resident of Markyate called a lumpectomy, followed by radiotherapy. The message was that we had caught it early and it was treatable, and I remember thinking this is doable and feeling relieved. I cannot praise the team at St Albans hospital enough for my overnight stay and I felt remarkably well following my lumpectomy. Unfortunately, this feeling was to be short lived, as test results revealed the cancer had spread to one and a bit of my lymph nodes and therefore a second opera on to remove all my lymph nodes would be imminent. I smiled, as I passed the fountains in Parkway, Welwyn Garden City. The frothing water was pink; what a great way to raise breast cancer awareness. Childhood memories of my beloved grandmother came flooding back to me; my head laying on her fla ened chest as she told stories, and her laughter as she tucked her false ‘booby’ into her bra, smoothing down her top. Busy lives, so many of us women have busy lives; looking a er family, working, shopping, socialising and housework … And yet, you should never be too busy to go for a regular breast cancer screening. When the NHS le er came through in September 2017, I put it to one side. My breasts had been checked by a GP just a couple of months ago and all was fine. WHY did I need to go along to this appointment? And there the le er stayed on the side, un l someone from Breast screening telephoned me. This person may have saved my life, because it changed my thinking. I was facilita ng a training session that morning, but yes, I could go to the mobile screening unit a er this. At the same me, I checked my diary; the GP breast check I thought was a couple of months ago was actually six months ago – how me plays tricks on us!

I am trying to remember how I felt when the doctor said, “Good news, we took 18 lymph nodes and no more cancer had been found.” I cried and felt numb. The consultants were ‘on the fence’ about my ongoing treatment, radiotherapy or chemotherapy and I was happy to take part in a Trial. A randomised selec on followed. I was in the Control Group to be treated with chemotherapy – one cycle, every 3 weeks, for 6 cycles, star ng 1st February, ending 17th May 2018, followed by daily radiotherapy for 3.5 weeks. You don’t have a choice, it is what it is but so far, treatment is tolerable and I am posi ve. And so here I am, early on a snowy Saturday morning wri ng this down. I could say so much more about my journey over the last few months, both the highs and the lows, the funny mes, the sad mes, people to thank, but I do not want to dilute my message. I felt no lumps or bumps, saw no dimpling or discoloura on. It was purely the ‘call’ from the breast care team and early diagnosis that has possibly saved my life. So please remember and don’t forget you are never ‘too busy’ to go for your rou ne mammogram breast cancer screening.

The NHS were quick to respond to the mammogram result and 10 days later, I was si ng at the Beds and Herts Breast Screening centre with my husband. The doctor checked my breasts and no lump, no dimpling or discoloura on could be found. Yet the mammogram clearly showed a small, dense mass and a biopsy was taken. Fortunately, from the ultrasound, it did not appear the cancer had spread into my lymph nodes. Despite having to wait a few days for the result, we were told it was almost certain I had early stage breast cancer and it was likely I would need an opera on

“I felt no lumps or bumps, saw no dimpling or discolouration. It was purely the ‘call’ from the breast care team and early diagnosis that has possibly saved my life.”

MARKYATE’S GARDEN PARTY OF THE YEAR! From modest beginnings 21 years ago, The Markyate Plant Sale has evolved into a fullblown garden party and raised nearly £85,000 for the Hospice of St Francis in Berkhamsted. This year’s sale will be held on Saturday 26th May from 10am and as always will be in the picturesque gardens of 64 High Street, Markyate. In readiness for the sale, over 7,000 popular annual bedding plants have been po ed up, including several exci ng new colours of old favourites and some beau ful new addi ons, which have been carefully grown on at Rothamsted Research Ltd, whose help in allowing us to use their premises is vital to the event. A selec on of perennial plants, herbs, vegetables and gorgeous hanging baskets, renowned for their long life, will also be for sale. To complete your visit, you can enjoy savoury filled rolls; home baked cakes and freshly brewed tea and coffee whilst being entertained by 'The Quintet of ‘Six’ which is an ensemble from The Woburn Sands Band’. There’ll be fun for the children too and a host of great raffle prizes to be won. What’s more ENTRY IS FREE – so put the date in your diary now! RAISING MONEY FOR PEOPLE WITH LIFELIMITING ILLNESSES! Ian Bradley, who has been involved with organising the event since the beginning, comments, “The Plant Sale has grown hugely since we started in 1997. Last year we welcomed several hundred visitors as well as Three Coun es Radio and raised £9,397. We were delighted that our green fingers generated such a worthwhile sum of money for the Hospice, which cares for people facing lifelimi ng illnesses across Herts and Bucks and provides support for families and carers. Many people in Markyate have been touched by the charity’s work and I am so pleased we are able to give something back to this remarkable community resource.” Whether you’re passionate about gardening or just need a hanging basket to add a touch of instant colour, pop along to the Markyate Plant Sale. Legal Ma ers Made Simple

GDPR and Recruiters

MAY

Con nuing on the ‘Legal Ma ers Made Simple Series’, Kiall Bagnell, senior associate in the corporate team at Sherrards, discusses the upcoming General Data Protec on Regula on 2018 (GDPR) its impact on recruiters and dealing with recruitment. Read on to find out more... Take note of the date as this is becoming affec onately known as “GDPR” day. It is the day when the old Data Protec on Act 1998 is superseded by GDPR. The aim; to effec vely standardise rules across the EU and create greater transparency, responsibili es and liability in rela on to how data (held on individuals) is collected, used, shared, stored, transferred or deleted. While not officially confirmed, it is expected that the UK will con nue to commit to observing GDPR post Brexit to maintain the harmonisa on with the EU rules and general data market. But what does this mean? GDPR, very briefly, places the burden of ensuring compliance on your en re organisa on, especially func ons like recrui ng which rely heavily on collec ng candidates’ personal data – their name, email addresses, possible medical requirements, telephone numbers or addresses. All informa on that would allow you to easily iden fy the individual. The following are a few of the key areas of impact and how GDPR should be considered:

1. Consent GDPR requires addi onal transparency in informing individuals about when (and why) their data is collected, processed and transferred. Tradi onally, recruitment sector businesses have relied on an individual’s consent to jus fy the processing of their data. However, under GDPR, there are stricter requirements for consent – it must be clearly dis nguishable from other ma ers, in an informed way and easily accessible form and must be capable of being easily withdrawn. Separate consent must be sought for separate processing ac vi es (such as, for example, when a candidate has put his or her details forward for one vacancy and these are then used for unrelated vacancies or other purposes). We expect that most businesses will need to revisit and revise their current data collec on and handling processes in order to comply with the new obliga ons. For example, some recruiters may need to ask exis ng candidates to reregister and remove any candidate who has not consented and to give candidates addi onal clarity about how they collect and use their personal data.

2. Data “processing” Under the exis ng regime, the “data controller” is the party who controls and decides the manner in which the data is

To adver se call 01582 965760

used; a “data processor” is someone who collects or processes the data (and this can be as simple as receiving and holding the data) from or on behalf of another. Currently, there is li le direct obliga on or liability on data processors. However, under GDPR all data processors will now have direct responsibility to data subjects in rela on to their compliance with GDPR. There are also various du es now on data controllers to ensure that they have a clear contract with suitable GDPR compliant terms with data processors as to what they can and cannot do with data that may be shared. All par es will need to ensure that the relevant recruiter has complied with the above men oned “consent” requirement. Well organised recruiters will include GDPR provisions within their terms of business and pursuant to their privacy policy. If you haven’t been given either by the recruiter, you should request them and ensure that there are clear provisions sta ng that they ensure all relevant and informed consent is given by the candidates. You will also need to be very careful on how you use, store and “process” the candidate data so as not to breach the GDPR.

3. Data Subject Rights Under GDPR, individuals will have far greater rights as to how their data is used and accessed. These range from the “right to be forgo en” and have data erased, or where it is no longer needed or is factually incorrect (which could include cases where candidates or contract workers contest feedback about a endance or performance). A new right of “portability” of data is created – the right for individuals to demand that all of their data is transferred, in easily readable formats, to another provider. Both recruiters and employers will need to review their working policies and prac ces to ensure that they can comply with all of these individual rights.

4. Security Under GDPR there is a duty to implement measures to ensure a level of security which is “appropriate to the risk“. Appropriate measures may include: pseudonymisa on and encryp on of personal data; the ability to restore data in a mely manner in the event of an incident; and a process for regularly tes ng the effec veness of security measures. This means that you may need to change your internal processes now in order to comply with GDPR. The implica ons of GDPR are far reaching and impact on all aspects of your business. The above is a very brief snap shot into the implica ons of GDPR and if you wish to discuss any of the issues raised in this ar cle, or for any advice or assistance, please do not hesitate to contact Kiall Bagnell on 01727 738914 or by email kiall.bagnell@sherrards.com.

Advertise with us and get results We deliver doortodoor 10,000 copies of the magazine each issue with an es mated audience of 30,000.

Now it is not … and it is intrusive …so we believe our business card sized advert for just £39 or three for £99 is excellent value as a star ng point or as a regular inclusion in our Directory of Services.

The mag sits on kitchen tables, coffee tables and the like and is a regular source of reference for many of our readers. Unlike social media adver sing, it does not flash past your eyes and is gone; it is there to pick up and read for as long as you, the householder, wants to keep it. Also, social media used to be a cheap source of adver sing.

Why not give us a try? Now that Facebook and other on line adver sers have increased their prices, we offer even be er value for money.
