WELCOME TO MIMAGAZINE Your local magazine for Redbourn, Markyate, Flamstead, Caddington, Slip End, Aley Green, Woodside, Kensworth, Whipsnade, Studham, Dagnall, Ringshall and the Gaddesdens.

Dear Readers, The dullest and dreariest me of the year, January and February are now behind us and we can look forward to March and the spring bulbs. Seeing the snow drops, crocus and hyacinths, followed by the daodils and tulips, are such a joy and the shorter nights and warmer days is upli ing. However, I have had some very enjoyable days in January and February, walking around the beau ful public footpaths and Na onal Trust land that we can all enjoy and which is very close to all our doors. Some days were cold, one day snowed; but when I went out with the West Herts Ramblers around the Gaddesdens, it was a beau ful sunny day.

I a ended the Redbourn Business Community mee ng on 17th February at Aubrey Park Hotel, where speaker Simon Raclie of MacRat gave a very interes ng talk on cybercrime. He reminded us all to back up our data on a cloud and on a device, and ideally have a third copy kept o site, away from our oďŹƒce and/or our homes. His message for small businesses was – make sure the company owns all the devices and IDs. If people leave an organisa on, they can depart being the only person with the knowledge of how to get into a computer belonging to the organisa on. Another occurrence which is becoming more common is that people are passing away and leaving no record for their family or executors of how to access their accounts, savings and investments. So the message is, make sure trusted people can access your passwords in case you are unable to do so yourself. He also made an alarming statement, which is quite believable following the Donald Trump tweets, that ALL DATA IS HACKABLE. He went on to tell us that the MOD have, in some areas, gone back to using typewriters, paper and ďŹ ling cabinets as this is the only way classiďŹ ed informa on can remain secret!

Markyate Nisa Local “Delighted to support Local Causes” The Nisa Local convenience retailer in Markyate is suppor ng two local causes this month with dona ons of £300 to Bizzie Bees 3 PreSchool and Markyate and Flamstead Community First Responder Group. This was done through Nisa’s ‘Making a Difference Locally’ charity, to enable both groups to purchase new equipment. Sagar Patel, director of the Nisa Local store, commented: “We are delighted to be able to support local causes through Making a Difference Locally and we would like to thank our customers for suppor ng the ini a ve in store, enabling us to support great causes such as these in our local community.” Kim Carney, Manager at Bizzie Bees 3, said of their dona on: “We were very pleased to receive the dona on from our local Nisa store. The computer used by the children recently broke, and in order to keep up with technology that the children are more familiar

New Town & Country estate agency opened in Edlesborough

Adam Barnes, Laura Peace and Mark Bristow

Town & Country estate agents officially opened their Edlesborough branch on 9th February by invi ng customers and business associates to enjoy an evening of conversa on, drinks and refreshments. It was a special treat for gin lovers with the chance to partake in a Campfire Gin tas ng, a new gin made by a local dis llery in Marsworth, Tring. Instead of ice and lemon, it was ice and orange that was recommended as the best accompaniment for this quality spirit for more info visit: www.puddingstonedis llery.com Town & Country now have offices in Markyate, Caddington, Redbourn (Fine & Country) and now Edlesborough. Mark Bristow, Managing Director commented: “The villages work well for us and I am delighted to open a branch of our business here in Edlesborough. Estate agents have occupied these premises for many years and we have taken over the

business from Christopher Pallet and prior to that it was Denson’s estate agency. We have just completed an extensive refurbishment programme and our doors are open for business as usual. Having previously lived in Eaton Bray and Ivinghoe Aston, I am excited by the prospect of personally working from this new office, bringing our unique brand of experience and dedica on to selling and ren ng homes to the local area. I’ve got a great team in place with Adam Barnes heading up the sales department, Laura Peace (who lives locally) running the property management side of things and the backing of our extended sales team and a er sales department who are based at the other offices. We are aiming to become the dominant agent in the area within a year and are looking forward to embracing the challenges ahead"

Swapping life in the UK for Tenerife

Predinner stroll

M

any Brits take the plunge and move lock, stock and barrel overseas to enjoy the good life. A racted by the sun, sea, alfresco ea ng and drinking as well as a rela vely low cost of living, it is not difficult to understand why so many head off, leaving Blighty, as their place of residence, behind them for good. Since Brexit, has the balance changed? The unfavourable Pound/Euro exchange rate means that the price of a beer and the monthly rent is not so favourable as it was, pre June 2016. Here, the proofreader of MiMagazine Janet Rigby, who works from her laptop in Tenerife, gives us the inside story …

starters and mains and is accompanied by a drink of choice. Just out for a drink? Try the locally brewed beer, Dorada at just €1.20 a bo le or a glass of the island’s home produced wine for around €1.50.

I consider myself lucky to be living on the lovely island of Tenerife. Before the events of June 23rd last year, I would perhaps have wri en this ar cle differently, but at the me of wri ng there remains much uncertainty surrounding the details of Brexit and its possible consequences for Brits abroad. That having been said, I s ll think that the advantages of living here in the sunny southwest corner of this Canary island beats being in the U.K. hands down. Why?

For the sake of a balanced ar cle I will point out that the cost of electricity has risen some 60% since we first bought here in 2008. This puts Spain amongst the most expensive countries in Europe. But of course, because we don’t need hea ng (although for a few weeks in the height of summer we do use aircondi oning) it seems to me that an average bill of €100 per month for a threebedroom house is affordable.

Well, for starters there’s the weather; an all year round temperate climate which lends itself to the outdoor life. The Spaniards in general certainly know how to party and if you want to find one, there is a fiesta somewhere on the island every week. Of course, part of the lure of living here is having a long, lazy lunch before returning home for a siesta. Even with the Great Bri sh Pound (GBP) being some 30 cents below its peak of 1.44, the cost of living is s ll much cheaper than that in the U.K.

Another reason that Brits se le here in Tenerife is the cost of property. Of course, it depends on where the property is located but on average a twobedroom apartment in a complex with a swimming pool, close to the seafront, can be bought from around €120,000. If you go slightly away from the coast into the small towns and villages at the foot of the mountains you can get even more value for money. Spacious two bedroom apartments can come in at as li le as €70,000. Follow this link h p://www.santelproper es.com/en to take a look at the proper es for sale with Santel Inmobiliaria whose business has been established on the island for more than 30 years.

Finding a typical Canarian restaurant with a Menu of the Day can mean that you are able to lunch like a prince for the not so princely sum of just €7. This would typically include making a choice from a selec on of

To adver se call 01582 965760

Staying at home to eat? That’s even cheaper! Now you can get a perfectly acceptable bo le of wine from about €3 and the Dorada now only costs 99 cents for a litre bo le. Food is also less expensive and there is certainly no shortage of fruit and vegetables, grown locally and sold freshly, at the local markets and supermarkets. An average weekly shop for two (with beer and wine of course!) is around €85. Included in this price is the cost of meat and fresh fish.

appears to be a be er healthcare system than that currently available in the U.K. Another, and very important considera on, will be whether our pensions will con nue to be indexlinked. Those Brits who might consider living in New Zealand (as this one did) or Australia soon find out that not having indexlinked pensions in the an podes is indeed one of the downsides to reloca ng there later in life. Again, all indica ons at the present me point towards indexlinked pensions remaining in place. Let’s hope so!

Walkers can enjoy mountain walks with panoramic views of the island

As the procedures and costs for buying property in Spain are very different from that of the U.K it is important to know and understand what to expect. Limited space prevents going into too much detail but on average I would suggest that you allocate 10% above your purchase price to ensure that you can cover all costs (including 7% purchase tax). If you would like more in depth informa on I would suggest downloading the booklets available from the Associa on of Interna onal Property Professionals (AIPP) at www.aipp.org.uk Another course of ac on open to those who might only want to visit the island to escape the winter months in the U.K. is to rent a property. The ‘swallows’, as we refer to them, can get a twobedroom apartment near the seafront for as li le as €450 euros a month. This is very different from the shortlet proper es licensed for holiday makers which usually cost anything from €50 a day upwards. Perhaps some of you are thinking at this point about the healthcare system. Since most of the ‘swallows’ are 60+ (average age is 70 in my es ma on) they are more likely to be on regular medica on and may need to access medical services whilst they are on holiday. There is, at this moment in me, a reciprocal agreement in place which allows for free healthcare for pensioners and those travelling with an E111 card. From recent press releases, it seems likely that this will con nue post Brexit. For those of us who have residency here and fervently wish to remain on the island to enjoy our quality of life, con nuing to receive free healthcare is amongst those items high on our post Brexit agenda. General opinion seems to be that, because we are already in the system, we should be able to con nue to benefit from what

To adver se call 01582 965760

Since most of what has been wri en about the future for expats postBrexit was done in the la er half of 2016 following the vote to exit; and given that we have, to date, not heard anything defini ve from the Bri sh government, there remains much specula on. And so, dear reader, your guess is as good as mine… But let’s finish on a posi ve note. If, like me, you consider an all yearround daily rou ne of relaxa on, lunching, walking, swimming, shopping and generally living well to be important, then this island paradise could just be your place. Outside the allinclusive hotels and away from the tourist built, lagerswilling resorts which sadly, for many define Tenerife, there is an historic island, the microclimates of which provide a landscape of profound beauty. From the peaks of Mount Teide to the depths of the gorges which criss cross the island, the discerning visitor can find their own li le piece of paradise. This is the reality of Tenerife – agricultural hamlets, small fishing villages, historic towns and ports, bustling ci es and of course modern, purposebuilt holiday resorts; all wai ng to be discovered and explored.

re you a pet owner? Do you some mes think that your dog is a li le s ff or your horse uncharacteris cally puts his ears back when saddled or ridden?

It may be because they are in pain or experiencing some discomfort with their bodies. We have invited Flamstead based therapist Sam Barre , founder of Back In Line Animal Therapy and Rehabilita on, to share some of her knowledge and experience with MiMagazine readers over the forthcoming issues. What is Back In Line? Back In Line, was started by Sam in 2002 a er she graduated from McTimoney Chiroprac c College. “My thriving prac ce is based in Flamstead trea ng mainly dogs and horses, with the odd farm animal, alpaca cow and cat for a bit of variety. Over the years I have added several other techniques to my ‘toolbox’ including acupressure, myofascial release, exercise rehabilita on, and most recently I qualified as an herbal choices consultant. “My aim is to help you recognise some common causes

of musculoskeletal problems and recognise if you dog or horse is in pain. In subsequent issues, I will help you make simple lifestyle changes to help prevent injury, introduce you to some simple fun exercises which really will help keep your animal mobile and fit for life whatever their age, ability and fitness. I will also introduce you to herbal choices – yes animals really do enjoy herbs!” said Sam. Common causes of musculoskeletal problems in dogs. There are many causes direct trauma, falls and opera ons are the most obvious, but the more common causes are o en overlooked. These include: • Being overweight which puts addi onal pressure on joints • Sudden bursts of exercise a er lying down – muscles can easily be pulled • Playing rough with toys and other dogs • Direct impact with objects or other dogs • Prolonged ball throwing sessions and jumping to catch toys in the air. • Intense exercise and training • Inappropriate training • Conforma on – how your dog is put together directly affects what injuries your dog may be prone to • Pulling on the leads, hal es and harnesses • Jumping on and off furniture or in and out of the car may cause a problem if your dog slips, falls or lands awkwardly • Sharing beds with other dogs and curling up in beds which are too small Some of these issues are easy to change. Allow you dog to ‘warm up’ on the lead for a few minutes before running around and playing. Don’t throw a ball for him more than 4 mes per session – their bodies and joints in par cular are not designed for con nued chasing and stopping; don’t throw toys into the air; and supervise play sessions.

Recognising if your dog has a problem If your dog was in pain he would yelp or cry out? In some cases yes, but some mes that’s just not the case. Muscle tension builds up over me, a li le bit of s ffness here and there, nothing too significant, just not himself, then li le by li le the problem gets worse without us really no cing. Compensa on occurs, and before we know it more serious long term injuries can happen. The following are indica ons that your dog may need help: • Reluctance to exercise – slowing down on walks, not wan ng to walk as far, not wan ng to play • Changes in performance or reluctance to work • S ffness before or a er exercise • Si ng or lying down in an unusual way • Uncharacteris c behaviour • Listlessness • Reluctance to be handled • Uneven wear of claws • Reluctance to jump into and out of the car, onto the sofa or climb the stairs

If you feel you dog may have a problem, or you would like any further informa on on the services I offer, please look at my website www.backinline.com or contact me on 07974 826936.

Baby Rhyme Times at Redbourn Report and photos by Janet Brown

T

he first Friday of the New Year saw Redbourn community Library open its door to a fresh new ac vity session of Baby Rhyme Times. Every Friday between 10am and 10:30am the library runs fun halfhour sessions of songs and rhymes suitable for babies, toddlers as well as parents and carers of course! You don’t need to book in advance, just turn up on the day which is Fridays. The photos say it all and it makes you realise how important singing and stories are to young children. The sessions are run by volunteers and this par cular session was fronted by Sue Bullen, who was able to capture everyone’s a en on. I am not sure who enjoyed it the most, children or adults! More informa on is available at the community library.

MARKYATE PLANT SALE SET FOR RECORDBREAKING 21ST BIRTHDAY!

T

his year marks the 21st birthday of the annual Markyate Plant Sale and the organising team is hoping to make it a double celebra on by bea ng all previous records to raise over £10,000 for The Hospice of St Francis! The sale will be held on Saturday 20th May in the picturesque gardens of 64 High Street, Markyate and the volunteer po ng team is preparing to start po ng up over 7,000 bedding plants early in April in readiness for the popular event. The sale will include more than 50 varie es of popular annuals, plus some beau ful new addi ons such as: Mimulus Magic Upright (a lavish mix of flowers in richly coloured shades and pa erns good in beds, tubs and pots); Pelargonium Toscana Chris (a strong growing, mid sized ‘geranium’, deep red with a pink eye excellent for containers); Pericallis Blue Bicolour (lovely in large planters with other plants or on its own in smaller ones. Also known as cineraria.); Salvia Farinacea Midi (bu erflies love this striking tall blue sage ideal for the back of the border); and Tagetes Strawberry Blond (a great new variety of double French Marigold bearing flowers of various shades including pink on the same plant). The team is also taking orders now for its beau ful hanging baskets and tubs. Renowned for their longlife, you can specify your own choice of colour scheme – or you can leave it to the team to surprise you. Customers can also supply their own tubs and containers for plan ng up. Prices are from £15 for 12in baskets and £22 for 14in (bespoke baskets and refills on applica on). To complete your visit, you can enjoy home baked cakes, rolls and refreshments whilst being entertained by the Kings of Herts Barbershop Group and Ka e’s Jumping Fleas Ukulele Band. There’s fun for the children too and a host of great raffle prizes to be won. From its modest beginnings 21 years ago the sale has evolved into a fullblown garden party that the whole family will enjoy and it’s FREE to a end!

To adver se call 01582 965760

Since it started in 1997, the event has raised over £74,000 for The Hospice of St Francis, which cares for people facing lifelimi ng illnesses across Herts and Bucks as well as providing support for families and carers. Last year the event raised a record £9,836, which could pay for ten nursing shi s at the Hospice. Ian Bradley, who has been involved with organising the event since its incep on, comments, “The Plant Sale has grown hugely since we started in 1997. Last year we welcomed several hundred visitors as well as Three Coun es Radio. We were delighted that our green fingers generated such a worthwhile sum of money for the Hospice.” Please call Ian Bradley no later than the end of April on 01582 943133 to discuss your requirements. Baskets and planters will be ready and can be picked up prior to the sale by arrangement.

Talking to Glenn Povey Mimagazine’s Janet Brown catches up with the General Manager at Harpenden Halls

H

arpenden Public Halls is currently on the edge of Harpenden Common, very close to the town centre. You could say it is the hub of the community in Harpenden and surrounding villages, as it covers a wide variety of events ranging from theatre; preschool ac vi es and educa onal programmes; all types of fairs to a wide variety of club events. What an interes ng job you have Glenn, how long have you been the manager and what made you choose this role? Yes it is – and I’ve been here for just over three years now. I’ve nkered about in the music industry for more than 25 years, working for record labels, promo ng tours and tour managing bands. When the kids came along I had to decide whether touring was compa ble with bringing up children and I chose to work close to home during their early childhood years. In many ways it was a lifestyle choice, and one that I’m very pleased I made. Do you live in Harpenden? Ha ha! I can’t afford to live in Harpenden! No, I live in Bovingdon which isn’t too far to commute. Tell us about your family, do they a end many of the events? My wife Jane and I have a son, Harry who is four and a half and a daughter, Emily who is 20 months. Occasionally, we’ve come to shows and the odd film, although it does feel a bit like a busman’s holiday for me. Harry loves the annual model railway exhibi on though! I believe you are being relocated to a new site, when will this happen and will it affect you? There’s a redevelopment plan for all the Harpenden leisure sites by the District Council, and we will be the final stage in that process. The idea is to take the exis ng swimming pool and build a new leisure centre making it one big leisure facility under one roof. A new arts venue, replacing the Public Halls, will be located at the site of the exis ng leisure centre in Rothamsted Park. From the ini al consulta ons and designs it looks like it will be an amazing venue which will give us much more flexibility of use, more studio space and a larger capacity for shows. This won’t be happening next week though, and I imagine this will start to take effect within the next three to four years. What are your interests outside of work? I have an unhealthy (or at least that’s what my wife says) obsession with collec ng/accumula ng vinyl records and music memorabilia – David Bowie and Pink Floyd in par cular I just can’t help myself. My wife keeps rare breed sheep on a farm local to us so that keeps us busy, especially in lambing season, and we show them at Herts County Show every year. Have you had some memorable moments at work? Too many to men on but here are some of the best ones: Piano legs falling through the floor in the hall; an elderly

To adver se call 01582 965760

lady punched my deputy manager in the face one day because she turned up an hour late for a show and somehow perceived it was his fault. The best one was a wheelie bin rolling off the edge of the stage with someone inside it (don’t ask). This is the usual kind of everyday minor disaster… Who is the most famous person you have met? I don’t really like mee ng ‘famous’ people (whatever than means these days) as they o en disappoint, but I could name a few! That said, there are plenty I have admired as musicians who I’ve bumped into or worked with over the years who are really nice people, although I think it would be a bit sycophan c of me to name names! In your opinion, what is the best event you have seen at the Halls? We have had some great produc ons pass through in my me here but as my interest lies in music I’d probably have to go with Tom Robinson. He closed his show with a song that was so moving it had the audience and staff, myself included, in tears at the end. Can you tell us what exci ng events will be happening this year? We have a superb David Bowie tribute band coming up. I’m really looking forward to Danny Baker as I’ve followed his broadcas ng career almost from the start, and we have a Record Fair which is another excuse for me to top up my collec on. We do have a great range of entertainment and the Children’s Theatre and Light Opera c always put on a great show. We recently held our first annual New Year’s Eve ball which was absolutely fantas c. Do you hire out the Halls for private func ons? Yes we do, and in addi on to the main hall we also have a studio room and professional kitchens that outside caterers can use, so we can generally meet all manner of needs whether it’s a dance class, recep on or an exhibi on. Just give us a call and we’d be happy to help! www.harpendenpublichalls.co.uk

Songs by Flanders and Swan were the centrepiece of the first half with Noel Coward, Tom Lehrer, Cole Porter, Ivor Novello, Pam Ayers and others being performed in the second. As parents of a preschooler, Clive and Claire, kindly donated all cket sales to Flamstead Preschool. It was a huge effort on their behalf, and a significant amount of money was raised for which the preschool is extremely grateful.

The Magic of Walking in the Countryside Report by Sue Mitchell

I

have started walking regularly in the last year since I re red my horse and needed to find something similar to do, where I could enjoy the countryside and get a workout.

My need for an adrenalin shot is less necessary these days and I am now happy to go exploring on my own two feet. I do s ll love to ride but not so much as an allencompassing passion anymore. I have climbed the big UK mountains in my earlier years including Snowdon in North Wales, Scafell Pike in the Lake District and Ben Nevis in Scotland, but I put hiking on the back burner during my riding years. Now, I have a rekindled enthusiasm for it and having undertaken several local walks alone, and more recently having joined the West Ramblers for a 7mile hike, I am keen to spread the word about the pleasure and good health a ributes to be had from walking.

Here are my 10 reasons why you should go walking... 1. We live in a beau ful part of the country with the Chiltern Hills, Dunstable Downs and Ashridge Forest on our doorsteps. Make the most of it. 2. Walking is the best way to get to know and appreciate the stunning scenery of our locality 3. Walking is great exercise. It is not too punishing on the joints but it gets the cardiovascular system working as you climb up the hills. 4. It is very social and a great way to meet new friends. When you join a group, you can chat away to fellow walkers for the dura on of the walk. 5. You can learn about the flora and fauna. When walking you see a large variety of birds, bu erflies, insects and ca le. 6. Easy to link up. Every village in the area has its walkers’ group. Some are part of the Ramblers Associa on. 7. It doesn’t cost anything 8. You can be any age to be a rambler, especially at the weekends. The weekday walks a ract more semi re red, re red people or part mers. 9. You don’t need to spend money on expensive kit. A good pair of walking boots and casual outdoor clothing is all you need to get started 10. Easy to find out more. The internet, social media and magazines like MiMagazine make it easy to find out more and get involved. You can walk to suit yourself and your own needs. 1 mile or 12 miles.

To adver se call 01582 965760

Why not join the Na onal Ramblers Associa on? Our local ramblers’ Group is the West Herts Ramblers. They are a friendly group with members based mostly, but not exclusively, in the Hemel and St Albans Area. New members are welcome to join them for a couple of taster walks before commi ng to membership. I decided to join them for a 11.5km walk, star ng at the Garden Centre in Great Gaddesden. It was a great day and my report of the walk is below. They have at least one walk every Sunday and one Tuesday a month; ranging from 3 to 15 miles with most being between 5 and 10 miles. They walk in the beau ful countryside of Herts, Beds and Bucks with occasional forays further afield including London. There is also a programme of social events including pub meals, a quiz, talks and two long weekends away each year. www.westhertsramblers.org.uk They’re part of the na onal Ramblers Associa on. We encourage new people to try us out for a few mes first and then pay the membership. www.ramblers.org.uk These are the costs of joining: Monthly Monthly concessionary* Annual Annual concessionary* Life Life concessionary**

My walk with the West Herts Ramblers on Tuesday 7th February Thirteen people met at 10am at The Garden Centre in Great Gaddesden for a 11.5km circular walk which took us up hill to begin with, followed by a gentle walk down to Ne leden. Up some steps took us along a walled path which opened out along a public path to Frithsden and the Alford Arms. From here we entered the edge of Berkhamsted Golf Course and before walking to Ashridge Forest where we stopped for lunch at the top of the Golden Valley with the Ashridge Management Centre in view at the bo om of the valley to the le . We moved onto Li le Gaddesden, across the road and then through some farm land, and finally into the grave yard and back into Great Gaddesden. The sun shone and I got some great photos of the group and the various land marks. I cha ed constantly for the whole 3 hours and 15 minutes and thoroughly enjoyed the company of my fellow walkers. I am keen to do another walk so I could well be a member of the Ramblers Associa on very soon!

The first climb up from Great Gaddesden was the steepest

This is my favourite short walk. It takes about 50 minutes to an hour. I drive from Markyate to the Na onal Trust car park which is off the B489 on the way to Tring, about 8 miles from my house. I park at the top of the hill and take the clockwise route which starts with a steady climb up to the Beacon which is 233 metres at the peak. The views are spectacular, in all direc ons. From the top you can see Tring, Ivinghoe Aston, Edlesborough, Pitstone Eaton Bray, across the Dunstable Downs and around towards Aldbury. It is popular with all age groups and dog walkers. Some fly their kites from the top. The steepest climb is back up to the car park at the end. You can do the route an clockwise for a change. By Sue Mitchell, Editor Con nued on page 34...

In 2016, the former Chancellor of the Exchequer announced a major change in the UK's system for taxing cars. The new regulations come into force on 1 APRIL 2017, and will make cars purchased after this date MUCH, MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE TO RUN. This makes the period leading up until the 1 April your final opportunity to benefit from far lower running costs.

DON’T DELAY, CALL TODAY! Time is running out, so do not hesitate – get in touch with Slip End Garages ASAP to make sure that your new car qualifies for the current tax system.

Love your Neigbourhood Get our children healthier in Watling Ward

The children are served with a healthy lunch

T

he message loud and clear from the Love Your Neighbourhood day at the Y2K building in Markyate on 15th February was that our children need to be healthier. Obesity and lack of exercise is bligh ng our young ones and Dacorum Borough Council put on this day to get their message across to parents and children alike. Sandra Mogan, Ac ve Communi es Lead Officer said, “We target these days where the needs are greatest from the results of surveys and Public Health figures. We aim to a ract 80100 people to these events to encourage healthy ea ng and an ac ve lifestyle.” Various stands promoted healthy ea ng and good diet with leaflets including the Eat Well Guide which shows people how foodstuffs are grouped into fruit and vegetables, carbohydrates, dairy and proteins. The children could play a game where they pulled together pictures of the various foodstuffs into a nutri ous and tasty meal. Another counter served a nutri ous lunch to the children which included a wrap, slice of ham or cheese, salad items

of tomato, cucumber and carrot and Dean cycles hard to create a nutri ous smoothie coleslaw. A small pot of popcorn and jelly and a slice of mandarin was served, with a bo le of water. The staff had worked out that ten lunches like this would cost just £10.55, with some le overs that could be used for tea. Recipes for the lunch were handed out to help parents adopt their recommenda ons. Healthy ea ng needs to be coupled with regular exercise to keep our children, and ourselves fit. phones, laptops and children nolonger playing out in groups una ended by adults, our children on average, are not as fit as they should be. What came naturally and easily one or two genera ons ago when we went out all day, playing and exploring and only coming home when we were really hungry, is now something that parents have to work hard at the ensure that their children are fit. I was astounded to learn that children should be ac ve for three hours a day. Examples of ac vi es to include in this me would be, playground ac vi es, playing on playing fields, games, riding scooters and bikes, walking, swimming, racket and ball games, dancing (and for younger children) object play, tummy me, and messy play. The benefits of physical ac vity are mul fold: ac vity improves sleep, maintains weight and health, develops muscles and bones, contributes to brain development and learning, encourages movement and coordina on and helps to build rela onships and social skills.

Amelie has a go at King of the Ring or should it be Queen of the Ring?

Did you know? • Watling Ward (Markyate, Flamstead and Great Gaddesden) has a higher than average number of children suffering from obesity. • Children need to exercise for 3 hours per day to be healthy. • 10 healthy lunches can be made for just £10.55. • Be Food Smart App can be downloaded. If you scan the barcode on a food item, the app will tell you the Sugar, Fat and Salt content of the item.

I do the Carbon Monoxide test

A big no no is smoking and there was a public educa on stand to help people further understand the health perils of smoking. I am a nonsmoker having quit 12 years ago. I had a go at breathing into the carbon monoxide measurement machine. Although I am a nonsmoker, I s ll had CO in my lungs and in my blood stream, but it was low compared to a smoker. A nonsmoker for example, living or working in London is likely to have significant CO readings in their lungs and blood. To get a very low reading you would have to be a nonsmoker living in a rural area. Although Markyate is semirural, it is s ll close to the M1, A5 and the other airpollu ng tracks.

• Adults need to take 10,000 steps per day to stay fit. Going around a supermarket can take around 3,000 steps so quit the on line shopping and go back to pushing the trolley! • There are 40% more cot deaths in households where there are smokers. • If you are a smoker but do not smoke in the house, when you cuddle your children within 90 minutes of having a cigare e, they will inhale CO from your clothes, breath and skin.

What you need to know about Run Redbourn

Who is the main contact for Run Redbourn? Group leader: Rachel Mackie 07881907358 Email: runredbourn@gmail.com Herts 10k runners Or join our Facebook group (search Run Redbourn!) for all the latest informa on and to be part of it. When did it start? Run Redbourn! started with our first run on 1st May 2016 How many members? Run Redbourn! is both a running community and club; many are involved but do not necessarily run in an organised session. Our closed Facebook group has over 270 members, of which over 100 members have run with us as part of one of our organised runs. Some runners prefer to run alone/with friends but share their running stories with others in the Facebook group. The only s pula on to be involved is that you love running and love Redbourn! Can people run with others of a similar standard? Yes, we have runs to suit all abili es and use techniques such as having a front and tail runner or 'looping back' to make sure no one gets le behind. Alterna vely, runners can post their average speed in the Facebook group and find others of a similar speed to go running with. When do you run together? We have 7 organised running sessions a week (i.e. a run with a qualified run leader), as follows: • Monday 8pm speed & hill training work • Tuesday 6am 5K earlybird run • Tuesday 8pm 2 laps of Redbourn Common (approx 3K) with a monthly ' me trial' to see progress • Wednesday 9am buggy (or nonbuggy!) run a steady approx 5K run, some runners will be with buggies • Thursday 6am 5K earlybird run • Sunday 8am 5K, designed for runners who have To adver se call 01582 965760

completed one of our beginner courses and want to con nue running in a group. • Sunday 7.30pm 510K we usually s ck to the same course and runners can either do 5K or con nue on to run further We also offer monthly trail runs with a qualified run leader. These are predominantly offroad runs, taking in some of the beau ful scenery in the countryside around. Typically, these would be about 10K. Are there organised training sessions? The Monday evening session is training for hills and improving speed. Is there a social side? Yes, we have. We have organised socials, such as curry nights and quiz nights. A er our trail runs, we have typically organised to go for brunch! There is also a large emphasis placed upon social media, so runners can interact with each other and other running related people/clubs/ ac vi es in the area. What have you got planned for 2017? 2017 will see us increase our Run Leaders we hope to add to our run leader numbers by 5 by the end of 2017. This means we can offer more running opportuni es and bring more ideas into the club. We have our third 05K course star ng in March 2017. The previous two have been incredibly popular, so we are delighted to offer a third. We will all be suppor ng the Redbourn Fun Run on 21st May 2017: Run Redbourn! is organising an obstacle course as an addi onal ac vity on the day Many of us will take part in the St Albans Half Marathon on 11th June and the Herts 10K on 8th October 2017. What have been your main ‘runs’ so far? Many of us took part in the Herts 10K in October last year. This was the first 10K that some runners had ever taken part in and the first organised race with a large Run Redbourn! representa on. Does it cost anything to join? No anyone who loves running and loves Redbourn can be involved! We charge for some of our specific courses (e.g. 05K) but not for our weekly runs. If we decide to affiliate with English Athle cs in due course, there will be a membership fee for this element of the club; however, this will not be mandatory. How do you welcome new members? We happily welcome new runners. We are a Run Together running group (search Run Together, then Run Redbourn!), so we ask all new members to sign up as these sites host emergency contact details and any relevant medical informa on. Our run leaders can access this via an app when out running, in case of any issues.

Connected Cars

By Melanie Wooding Jones, Redbourn Auto Solu ons – Caring for you and your car

C

onnected cars. Is this another modern term being banded about or does it have any substance? Why is this new technology seen as so important and what is the benefit to the consumer? Here we take a look at the changing world of incar technology, its capability and the challenges this presents. What is a connected car? Our cars already have complex computer systems on board which enable convenience and safety systems from climate control, an lock brakes, and diagnos cs, to emission control, air bag systems, keyless entry, and memory se ngs for seats and mirrors, cruise control, etc. The newer cars also offer sensor technology for stopping distances, parking or ac va ng alarms

To adver se call 01582 965760

when the car senses that you are dri ing across the road or motorway lanes. The latest technology allows for the sensory input of more than one vehicle enabling instant reac on. It predicts the road condi ons ahead and adjusts your naviga on or takes immediate emergency ac on. It feeds informa on back to other road users and to centralised management centres controlling emergency services, traffic lights, accident awareness, as well as the manufacturers about your usage, etc. It enhances your journey and predicts what you may need such as the nearest fuel sta on, local restaurant/hotel or deliver a wide range of incar entertainment choices.

Why the landscape is changing rapidly. Every year there are 1.2 million casual es in road accidents around the world. Imagine if we knew in advance that a child was about to run into the road, or a motorcyclist was rushing around the corner, accidents could be avoided. Our reac on mes are crucial here, but if a car an cipated the accident rather than risking the inevitability of

MIMagazine Mar/Apr 17_Layout 1 21/02/2017 14:40 Page 45

45

human error, lives could be saved. In addi on, if an accident happened on the motorway and the consequences of accident were acknowledged by the car behind, pile ups could be a thing of the past and emergency vehicles could be on site more quickly. Economy of our vehicles would be increased. Our vehicles will recognise conges on in real me and take ac on to counteract them. This reduces our fuel consump on which can only be beneficial with recent increases in the cost of fuel and impact on our environment. It would also have the capacity of telling us where people are wai ng to li share, so we can share the cost of travel and no longer have to travel alone. Businesses are excited by the concept that the transporta on of meconstrained goods could be transformed… consider a hospital awai ng the safe and rapid arrival of a lifesaving consignment. If a car is connected to the road signs, traffic lights, management centres and other cars, it makes this transi on to a new age of technology quite compelling. In terms of onboard comfort, the ‘Infotainment’ makes music, news bulle ns, films, connec on with friends and informa on about our surroundings or des na on, enhance our journey. Our cars will understand our interests and preferences. It will be able to filter informa on to your exact requirements. It will find the nearest fuel sta on, a restaurant or a charging point for your electric car. The garage of the future will be able to conduct remote diagnos cs and even book you in for your next service or MOT. The automo ve industry is cu ng a new landscape where survival is not just about how mechanically a car operates or how aesthe cally pleasing a car can be, but how connected a car can be for safety and comfort. This is possibly why technology giants such as Google, Apple and Android are so interested in the capability of cars and really challenging Manufacturers. Perhaps it won’t be long before we see the iCar…..

The challenges ahead. It can all sound very futuris c, but we are using some of this technology already in our home computers. We have also become more reliant on using our mobile phones which already use informa on to detect where we are, tell us if our

friends are nearby, navigate for us and even how many steps we take each day!

Cost to the consumer. It is likely that alliances will be made between car manufacturers and technology leaders to ensure the best experience for consumers for builtin technology. However, there will also be a ermarket systems that will connect directly into your onboard systems, so that older cars can also be connected. Either way, this technology will come at a premium, and it is likely that there will be a cost to the consumer. The nervousness in the industry around this has led to an increase in smart phone integra on to sa sfy consumer demand for connec vity in the interim.

The challenges of connected cars s ll remains an issue of safety. What happens in an accident when a sensor fails? Will insurance companies pay out or will the liability for such an incident lie with the owner? Current legisla on would indicate that the fault would lie with the owner. What about the reliability of the computer? The average life cycle for a home computer is varied, but most recommend around 35 years to replacement. Under new legisla on, new cars will not have to pass an MOT un l they are 4 years old. So, if this con nues as the only legal requirement, will they make servicing intervals compulsory?

There is a risk of computer hacking. We already know that websites, emails and social media are rife with hackers. It leaves our cars open to Malware, odometer fraud, full data injec on, intrusions, vehicle the and fraudulent warranty claims. Have you ever worked for a company where the IT department or a so ware provider take control of your computer? You can see them making changes on your screen, but you have no control… now transfer that capability to a car!

Where do you draw the line? If the sensors from your car are fully connected, then other people know where you are and when, what you are watching, what your preferences are, etc. Will you be able to shut down the connec ons? If you are used to being connected, would shu ng off the sensors become a safety issue? But if you are le connected, then your home may be exposed. Con nued on page 46...

46

works but are exceedingly frustrated when it doesn’t. One thing is for sure, the technology giants will make this happen, the safety components to being connected are too compelling not to. They will eventually iron out all the concerns.

If a car is aware how fast you are travelling, or too close to the vehicle in front, or you happen to get caught in the hatched area of traffic lights, or you’ve le your fog lights on, are you then liable for prosecu on or loss of licence?

But in the same way that we encourage our children to come off the screens and engage in conversa on and enjoy life and interac ng, we don’t want to lose our ability to enjoy driving. Remember the days we actually had to map read to get somewhere and give three rings on a fixed home phone to say that we had arrived safely? Lessons of being geographically aware and courteous without being intrusive? If you forget your phone for the day or go for a walk without it, do you feel a sense of freedom? Wasn’t it nice when we all sat round the dinner table without phone’s pinging or vibra ng for a en on?

It has many advantages for businesses with company car drivers, but what about the, ‘I’m s ll at the office, Dear...’ when you’re actually at the pub?!

Let’s get back in control of having a choice without assuming all technology is good for us. Connected cars are coming, but let us decide what we want share with others and how we want to use it.

Will we all be taking to bicycles to disconnect?! How many applica ons will drivers be allowed to use whilst remaining safe and undistracted? How temp ng will it be to complete the next round of 4Pics One Word or Candycrush?? And how many applica ons can you bear in a car, pinging and singing as you pass the next Pokemon?!!!!

Technology Confident Dealers Car dealerships/garages need to understand the new technology and for many this won’t be a natural progression. Some garages already have a poor reputa on for conveying what is going on under the bonnet; throw in a computer as well and we could all be le bamboozled! However, the good ones will embrace the change and be able to advise customers how to get the best out of their advanced technology. Thought for Today By Phancurio, resident of Markyate

Happy Days Happy days for some are borne out of the unhappy days of others

O

n one of his visits to Britain, Gandhi was asked what he thought of Western civilisa on. “Western ,” he replied, “That would be an excellent idea!” Quite so. We may doubt whether the vision of humankind living together in a civilised way can ever be fully translated into social reality. Not even the civilisa on that produced the 16th century saintsinger, Meera Bai of Rajput, was and is immune to a relapse into debasement. Her famous ‘bhajan’ (a religious song which shares spiritual ideas and scripture) addressed to Krishna was a prayer: "Oh Lord, take away the pain from mankind." I took the image on this page in 1979 on a visit to the premises of the ‘Diamond Match Factory’ in Sivakasi which is in the state of Tamil Nadu, South India. It is one of more than 3,000 sites there manufacturing matches. The factory employed 200 workers, and like most of the factories in Sivakasi, they were mostly girls aged between 6 and 14 years old. The children did piecework ten to twelve hours a day, six days a week, in sweltering condi ons. For this they would receive 1518 Rupees weekly; the equivalent of just less than £1. They would not go to school. What I am seeing here is the conversion of the lives of these children into profits for the emerging, and now victorious and cosmopolitan Indian middle class, a social future – happy days – but one from which these girls would be permanently excluded. Using religious language, I would say their lives and futures were appropriated, transsubstan ated and then consumed by becoming the bread of life for the social rise of a minority. No civiliza on deserves that name when it excludes from its horizon the well being of all. No single economic decision has integrity if it excludes the moral dimension. In the last couple of years, we have witnessed in the UK too the disregard for various sec ons of society To adver se call 01582 965760

and the rise of new elites parading their newly gained wealth in our ci es. When Lloyds Bank receives, from you and me, something like a £20 billion loan over ten years at 0% interest you know that we are not si ng in the same boat. When bankers and CEOs, in a me of crisis for most of us, help themselves (and themselves only) to eye watering pay rises, you know that we are talking privilege, not merit. For those who are on zerohour contracts, classified as ‘selfemployed’ (but in reality being told what to do) farmers struggling with mighty supermarkets, factory workers ostracised for ‘whistleblowing’, teachers who can’t afford the rent or researchers at the university on a shortterm contract, even o en freelance journalists hoping for new assignments; in brief: those producing the material wealth of this country or to the genera on and transmission of knowledge that make our society ck, are likely to be excluded from the proceeds generated. Why? Because these are usually harvested by those who decide on the marke ng and the trading of goods and knowledge and they would need some convincing to share their happy days with others. It is unlikely that many people from the disregarded sec ons of our society will rise to the top because we are not ‘all in this together’ and society is neither ‘big’ nor ‘shared’, Brexit or not. Somebody once said that human progress, under free market condi ons was a pagan idol who would not drink the nectar but from the skulls of the slain. He was referring to the 19th century, was he not?

Li le Gaddesden Preschool's Child Dog Bite Preven on Workshop Li le Gaddesden Preschool recently had a visit from two furry friends and their owner Karen. They came to the preschool to teach the children about how we should behave around dogs and what we should do if a dog that we don't know approaches us. It was a fun and interac ve workshop, full of ac vi es that enabled the children to understand fully the important messages being taught. Thank you to "Karen's in the DogHouse!" dog training for coming along to Li le Gaddesden Preschool to share their knowledge with the children. Nearly 100 people a ended the Friends New Year Quiz and a er an extremely close contest; the table hosted by Patrick & Anne McDonald were declared the winners by a mere half point. They will retain the Brian Webb Memorial Trophy for the next 12 months. The evening resulted in a healthy profit of £681 towards the upkeep of the Church building. Winners of the February Monthly Draw were Marian Mumford and Wendy Kennedy. Marian very generously donated her winnings back to the Church.

Can you volunteer as a First Responder? The Markyate and Flamstead Community First Responders are currently looking for volunteers to join the team.
