Get in the swing... and try something new My grandson was six years old when I took him to his first golf lesson. Nothing serious, just a group of youngsters, boys and girls, looking to try something new. He went on to develop a very tidy swing, and represented Aldwickbury Golf Club in many junior team competitions. But it wasn’t just about playing golf. It was about learning respect (for your opponent), courtesy and discipline – qualities that should stand him in good stead as he navigates his teenage years. And most of all, it was about having fun and forging lasting friendships. One of the coaches who helped to guide him through his ‘golfing adventure’ was Louis Downie, now a PGA Golf Professional at Redbourn Golf Club. In this issue, Louis, and his fellow golf pro James Sawford, explain why you too should discover the joy of golf. It’s a sport that can be enjoyed by
There’s plenty of good golf clubs locally to try, including Mid Herts, which currently has a special membership offer running (see page 17). MiMagazine also sat down for a chat with Beth Bradley, President of Redbourn WI, who tells us why she enjoys reading a good crime novel, why Brad Pitt would be the perfect dinner party guest, and why her favourite drink might surprise you. And with Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day and Easter arriving in quick succession, make sure you book early at one of our many local pubs, restaurants, tea rooms and golf clubs to treat your loved ones and family. people of all ages and skill levels. And it also has health and wellbeing benefits. Did you know that on a regular 18hole course, most players will walk between four and five miles… burning up to 2,000 calories. Now that’s a New Year resolution worth keeping. St Albans Round Table is delighted to announce the grand total raised by the Santa Float during December. This is an alltime record and will help a lot of local charities. Thank you St Albans, London Colney and Redbourn. A new official portrait of The King is being made available free of charge to town, parish and community councils from this month to hang in public buildings. The portrait was taken at Windsor Castle last year by photographer Hugo Burnand to celebrate the new reign. All public authorities, including schools, police forces and fire and rescue services, can apply under the scheme organised by the Cabinet Office.

Local computer charity comes to a place near you Do you have a fear or dislike of technology or devices, especially computers? It’s a surprisingly common concern and, in fact, it’s quite possible that we all suffer at least a small amount of nervousness when confronted with new technology. Computer Friendly is a ‘not for profit’ registered local charity, wanting to help adults in St Albans and surrounding areas to feel included and less isolated by being better skilled on digital devices to meet the demands of the ever increasing online world. The charity has been in existence since 2002 and has around 50 volunteers performing various roles, from admin to technical experts. With decades of computer/digital experience behind them, the friendly technical experts can assist with your needs. Computer literacy is a core part of contemporary life and they want to ensure everybody has the opportunity to be a part of it. There are various ways that Computer Friendly can help you to get to grips with
computers, tablets and smartphones and other digital devices and get handson help and advice, including scheduled courses and one to one sessions, or you can visit one of their many, free dropin sessions. The chair of trustees, Tony Bourke, is keen to increase Computer Friendly’s reach into the community by offering dropins in as many locations as possible. The reach has already increased with the offering of nine dropin centres in St Albans and surrounding areas. The village of Flamstead has been served since 2018, and the very latest offering at The Parish Centre in Redbourn commenced in January this year. The Flamstead team, ably led by Barry Bines, are available at Leonards Church on the first Wednesday of each Month between 10.30am and 12.30pm. The dropin team in Redbourn is led by Ian Caldwell, and they would love to see you and chat. So come on down to The Parish Centre on a Monday afternoon between 2.30pm and 4.30pm.

POTHOLES – the big, the bad and the ugly… By Melanie Wooding Jones – Redbourn Auto Solutions – Caring for you, and your car
T
here are an estimated one million potholes across the UK, causing breakdowns to rise to a fiveyear high at a cost to drivers of £474 million. So, why do we have so many and how can we avoid any unnecessary motoring costs?
Why do potholes occur? Potholes are formed by three elements: surface cracks, water ingress, and movement. They then expand according to weather conditions and the amount of distress caused over the weakened area. Surface cracks appear when there is an inadequate road structure. The layers are defined for the applied level of traffic loading allowing the road to flex under defined parameters. However, repeated strain at the bottom of the asphalt can result in the initiation of fatigue cracks which are exacerbated when the defined wheel load is exceeded. Our roads have become busier, so it is no surprise that these loads are regularly surpassed. Other contributory factors are
poor drainage, ageing asphalt, shrinkage, reflective cracking (where a new asphalt covers old), or where utility trenches have been excavated and the disruption of soil creates movement. Water seeps into the cracks, saturating the asphalt layers and softening the soil below, damaging the infrastructure. Movement from traffic pounding the road, fractures the surface which continues to expand and deepen contaminating the layers beneath, creating further weakened areas. This is most likely to occur under where wheels regularly travel and usually closest to the kerb where water drains. Rainfall and freeze/thaw cycles accelerate development, which is why we see an increase of potholes forming in the winter months. Why are there so many potholes? There are several reasons why we are suffering with an increase of potholes across the UK:
p06-09_MiMagazineFEB/MAR.qxp_Layout 1 23/01/2024 17:43 Page 7
7 • Increased traffic on the road exceeds the original road design; • Global warming means we have more water and freeze/thaw cycles; and • Already stretched council budgets will not stretch to the level of maintenance required to resurface or seal to prevent asphalt deterioration. So, until we can resolve some of the above, potholes are here to stay for a while. But the real reason this is such an emotive subject is the damage and unwanted expense they cause. What damage do potholes cause? When a tyre hits irregularities in the road, the force exerted on the suspension is directed upwards. The higher up the tire the impact, the more force is pushing the tyre both up and back. The amount of damage this causes is dependent on how much the tyre can absorb the force of the impact given the tyre size, depth and length of the pothole and speed of travel. When the tyre cannot absorb the impact, other components are affected. The most common types of damage, other than a damaged tyre or loss of a hubcap, are: bent or broken wheel, wheels knocked out of alignment, damaged suspension components, bent steering parts and damaged shock absorbers. Tyres Tyres take the impact first. This can break the interior structure, tear the sidewall, create a bulge or both. If a tyre is underinflated, there is an increased risk of a ‘blow out’. Lowprofile tyres can sustain more severe damage. Wheels If the tyre does not absorb the impact, the wheel suffers. It could bend, crack or break as a result. Alloys are fragile and not easily mended, so likely to need replacing if damaged.
Suspension When a pothole is hit at force and the impact is upward and rearward, the forces are transmitted to the suspension. If there is enough force, suspension parts and steering can become damaged, and wheels knocked out of alignment. Alignment Alignment should be checked after hitting a pothole or a kerb to prevent tyres wearing unevenly and prematurely. You’ll also notice the car pulling to one side or driving becoming noticeably uncomfortable. Shock absorbers Shock absorbers rarely break from impact with potholes, more likely they will wear out due to extensive driving on poorly maintained roads. If there is oil leaking from a shock absorber, it could be that it has reached the end of its useful life. To check them, push down hard two or three times on a corner of the vehicle, then let go when the car is at its lowest point. If the car bounces twice or more, it’s time to change that shock absorber. Repeat the test on all four corners of the vehicle. Shock absorbers are usually changed in pairs. If you are in any doubt, don’t leave your safety to chance, get your vehicle checked out by a professional. What do I do if I hit a pothole? Check for damage Damage can happen even at low speeds, so it is always worth checking first. • Pull over to a safe location as soon as it is safe to do so; • Check your tyre for visible damage, such as something stuck in the tyre, a slit, puncture or other damage; • If that is OK, drive slowly off and check for any vibrations or shaking; and • Check if your steering wheel doesn’t centre properly or the car is pulling to one side.

8 If anything is untoward or you don’t feel comfortable, take it to your local garage to get it professionally checked over. Take notes It is always worth taking notes at the time of the incident as memory changes over time. Details enable you to report the pothole to the council to ensure the road is safe for others. You may also need them later as evidence for insurance purposes or a potential pothole claim. Take photos of the hole if it is safe to do so. Include a point of reference, such as a can of drink, etc, to give a sense of scale. If you happen to have a tape measure in the car, even better! Make sure you can identify exactly where the hole is, including the road name and any landmarks. If there are any witnesses, make sure you have their contact details. Report the pothole Councils have a responsibility to fix large potholes if they know about them. Reporting the pothole enables the council to schedule a repair and put preventative measures in place until it is fixed. Report it to Hertfordshire Highways: https://www.hertfordshire.gov.uk/services/Hig hwaysroadsandpavements/Reporta problem/Reportastreetlightorpothole.aspx Repair your car Make sure you get your car repaired or checked over if you are unsure as to the damage that has been caused. The priority is keeping you and other road users safe. The garage can check over your tyres, wheels, shock absorbers, suspension and steering to give you the confidence that all is
safe, or show you what has been damaged and give recommendations on economical and effective repairs. Once repaired, make sure you keep your garage report establishing the pothole caused the damage, and receipts to support any claims you make to the council. Prevention is better than cure Judgment errors can be costly, so it is better to avoid potholes if you can. Think about where you are driving: Small country roads are not as well maintained, and under strain from heavier vehicles (such as tractors, etc), so are more likely to have potholes. Give yourself time to spot them by driving slowly and steadily. Consider driving conditions: Water not only creates potholes, but also hides road damage when covered by heavy rain. If safe, drive around water to avoid concealed dangers. Maximise visibility: Subject to weather conditions, potholes are usually easy to spot. Give them as much attention as other hazards. Reduce speed and allow yourself enough time to react to any in your path. Choose the right tyre: Tyres are different and invariably you ‘get what you pay for’. Typically, smaller, more flimsy tyres perform less well on uneven road surfaces, whereas bigger, broader tyres are better equipped to manage the challenging terrain. Arguably, a quality set of winter or allseason tyres are best, but are not your only choice. For a full range and good advice on tyre choices talk to your local garage who will be able to provide the best advice. The way forward… There has been a lot of publicity recently on the news and a launch of National Pothole Day on January 15. Various organisations are
p06-09_MiMagazineFEB/MAR.qxp_Layout 1 23/01/2024 17:43 Page 9
9 supporting the push to get the potholes rectified. The AA has become a part of the Pothole Partnership and sent a fivepoint plan to central and local government officials to press the case for more effective road repairs. This includes making permanent repairs rather than using temporary patches, accelerating the distribution of funding and full transparency from local authorities on their progress in tackling backlogs of road repair. The RAC is also involved in supporting improvements by joining forces with technology company Metricell to encourage drivers to use a mobile app to collect data on road conditions via smartphone cameras. The Government has pledged an extra £8.3 billion of funding over 11 years for local road maintenance. The Local Government Association is tackling the £14 billion backlog of road repairs, including learning from, and adopting new innovative techniques. The Department for Transport launched a consultation to crack down on utility companies letting roadworks overrun, which will cut congestion and generate additional income to resurface roads, and a plan to double fines for those working without a permit. So, efforts are in place to make our roads safer, but in reality, until the funding converts to action, the potholes are here to stay, at least in the short term. As much as we can take safe actions to avoid them, it is more than likely that we will all succumb to the annoyance of hitting a pothole at some point. Knowing preventative measures we can take and what to do if you hit a pothole helps and of course choosing the right tyre to avoid damage to expensive parts is essential. If you are unsure, come and talk to the experts at Redbourn Auto Solutions and we’ll be pleased to help you. In the meantime, look after yourselves in the winter months and if you need any help, give us a call. We’re happy to help.

MiMagazine chats with... Beth Bradley Beth Bradley is President of Redbourn WI and is married to Steve. I met Steve when I was 15 and we’ve been together ever since (45 years). We have been married for 27 years and have three children: Reagan 35, Jesse 34 and Shannon 30 – you do the maths! I also have three grandchildren – Indie, Otto and Dexter. How long have you lived in Redbourn? 28 years. We were both born and brought up in London so Redbourn seemed a million miles away from what we knew but we didn’t want our kids to grow up in a city and now we can’t imagine living anywhere else. Why the WI? When Mandy Coster and myself heard the old WI was closing, we thought it was a shame because it had been running for so many years. It’s important to have somewhere for women to go to meet new people, try different things and hopefully forge new friendships. First job? Bank clerk in Midland Bank, Edgware Road, London. Current business? Coowner, with Debbie Sutherland, of Changing Views, a bespoke curtain and blindmaking company now based in Markyate. Hobbies/pastimes Walking, pilates, jigsaw puzzles and reading. I like cooking but don’t like making weekday dinners! Favourite drink? Pint of lager (I’m such a bloke). I don’t do sipping very well! Favourite meal? Skate wings with black butter and capers. If it’s on any menu, that’s what I’m having. Book you most enjoyed? The ‘Power of the
Dog’ by Don Winslow. A violent, gritty novel about Mexican drug cartels – not the sort of fiction you would expect the President of the WI to read. I like detective/murder stories with a believable narrative. I hate ‘girlie’ fiction. Film you most enjoyed? I don’t have a favourite film but I love binge watching box sets. I think the fact that I have seen some a few times over means that they are my favourites: ‘The Sopranos’, ‘Game of Thrones’, ‘Mad Men’, but my favourite one of all is ‘This is Us’. A story following the lives of triplets from birth through till adulthood. It was sometimes cheesy and sentimental but it always made me feel good. See, I do like girlie stuff! Best holiday? Sixweek tour of West coast USA. We started in Phoenix, Arizona and drove through Nevada, California and New Mexico. Why? Because it was prekids and we could go where and when we wanted. Plus we got to experience so many different things. If you could have any four people to a dinner party who would they be? My sister Jane, because she is the funniest person I know and always has a great anecdote. Chef Angela Hartnett, because she too loves food but isn’t judgmental about it. She’s down to earth and funny. Kirsty Young – I love her voice and she could tell us about all the interesting people she interviewed in Desert Island Discs. Brad Pitt, because we’ll need some eye candy! Redbourn WI meets at 7.30pm on the second Wednesday of each month at Redbourn Village Hall. Upcoming meetings include ‘Resolutions/Valentine Craft’ (February) and ‘Ovarian Cancer Talk’ (March). For further information call Beth Bradley on 07852 452303.

Get out and explore the Ver Valley... With brighter weather (hopefully) nearly upon us, there is no better time to put on your walking boots and explore the beautiful countryside surrounding us. Sometimes overlooked as a form of exercise, walking can help you build stamina, burn excess calories and make your heart healthier. Like much of Hertfordshire, the Ver Valley offers walkers much to enjoy. It has well documented and signposted footpaths, year round flora, fauna and wildlife, amazing views and superb stopping off places. The Ver Valley extends from Kensworth Lynch, north of Markyate, south via Redbourn, St Albans and Park Street, to join the River Colne near Bricket Wood. The Ver Valley Society has created a series of short walks following the River Ver and exploring the surrounding countryside. Each walk is beautifully illustrated with easy to read maps and instructions.Or why not take the River Ver Trail for a 17mile walk from its source to the Colne. Chalk streams, such as the Ver, are globally very rare and have habitats supporting a very special ecology. The Ver Valley Society exists to protect and
promote all aspects of the River Ver and its valley. It was originally founded in 1976 to promote the Ver/Colne Walk, but shortly after the river, and its valuable water meadows, began to decline due to over abstraction of ground water and climate change. The society now has a team of volunteer water bailiffs who monitor the Ver regularly and an Action Group that does clearance work monthly along the river. The Ver Valley Society has more than 300 members and is always pleased to welcome new ones. The series of walks can be downloaded online at https://www.riverver.co.uk/walks/ or a pack of printed copies is available from the membership secretary, Peter Hill, who can be contacted by email at members@riverver.co.uk or on 01582 793785. 1

The Park Estate: then and now The area of The Park is generally accepted to have been the location of Redbourn Priory from around 1178 until the Dissolution in 1535. After that it reverted to farming use and a temporary location for the village football pitch. In 1966, construction of a new housing estate commenced, with the Redbourn Archaeological Group carrying out some exploratory excavations. Finds included an assortment of carved stonework from the Priory and a well with the original ‘Tree Pump’ still in situ at the bottom. All of these can now be viewed in the Priory Room at Redbourn Village Museum. The museum is open on Saturday and Sunday, 2pm to 5pm, from February to November. Hertfordshire’s PCC to stand down at next election Hertfordshire’s police and crime commissioner (PCC) David Lloyd (right) has announced he is to stand down at the next election in May this year. Mr Lloyd is one of the longestserving PCCs in the country having being elected to the post when it was created in 2012. He was re elected in 2016 and again 2021. He was previously chair of the Hertfordshire Police Authority and deputy leader of Hertfordshire County Council and has been continuously involved in police governance since 2005 – the longest in the country.
The new PCC will be elected in May when elections are held across England and Wales. Mr Lloyd said: “I have served three terms as PCC for the county and have thoroughly enjoyed the role and appreciated the wonderful support and friendship of my team. It has been the greatest privilege of my life representing the amazing people of Hertfordshire. However, one of the arts of leadership is to know when to hand the reins on to someone else. That time has come.” Elected PCCs were created to replace Police Authorities in 2012. Their role is to be the voice of the people and they are responsible for delivering an effective and efficient police service and helping to cut crime.

Fun, exciting, challenging... and often frustrating – why you should try bowls John Turkentine explains why playing bowls is not only about the competition, it’s also a great way to relax and make new friends – and it’s not just for the elderly.
T
here is something extremely special and rewarding about sending a bowl on its journey. Especially if it arrives where you want, or expect, it too! It starts in a straight line away from the target then, dipping slightly as it starts to slow down, slowly turning and drawing to rest at its intended destination. Your reaction is either one of joy or disappointment – depending on its position – but an emotion normally withheld from your fellow players… Despite recent a newspaper article (The Economist, January 6, 2024) suggesting that the game of bowls has reached a “terminal position”, I would beg to differ. It has been my experience since the Covid19 shutdown that there is a resurgence in the game; interest is growing and the people who are taking it up for the first time are embracing it and finding it fun, exciting, challenging and frustrating, and a great place for meeting new people and forming new friendships and associations. I currently coach at Batchwood Hall Bowling Club and at Harpenden and District Indoor Bowls Clubs. As a Level One Coach dealing with new bowlers of all ages and abilities coming into the game for the first time, I have seen the quick development over a standard four
coaching sessions of ‘Introduction to Bowls’ of several talented and competitive players, as well as social/fun players who are developing their game and making new friends. The game is a simple one and when the nuances and basic skills are taught it gives all comers, at any level, a passionate, fun pastime, or a competitive buzz, depending on the individual concerned and what they are looking for. An easy, low cost and friendly format for exercise, improving mental health, general fitness, camaraderie and friendship, bowls becomes a must. It is certainly worth the effort of trying to attend an open day or open session at your local bowls club. I can thoroughly recommend it – it has given me a new lease of life in retirement, although I regret now that I did not start earlier in life. I would therefore recommend any younger members of the community to please come along and try it; it can become an exciting, competitive, and enjoyable pastime. Most clubs also have an active social side with quiz nights, coffee mornings, etc. There is something for everyone. Also, the old disciplined approach to clothing and dress codes has been relaxed, allowing a greater continued on following page...

freedom of fabrics, colours, logos, etc. The basic bowling equipment will be available in most clubs for new players to use, but if you are looking to buy new my advice is ‘don’t’, not until you have tried out some of the many types of bowl on offer first, and then start with previously loved bowls. Prices for new bowls can be a bit daunting, so go on the websites or club notice boards and look for the bargains they have to offer. A good set of new bowls can cost between £300£500, but very similar ‘older’ bowls are available for between £80 and £110. Where to play bowls? It seems that most people are aware that bowls is a sport played in many parts of the country, but I have heard the following comment so many times: “I didn’t know that was here.” Well, there are a few in our area that are worth checking out.
Indoor bowls clubs – there are six indoor clubs within Hertfordshire, details of which can be found at https://www.hertsiba.com/ organisation Outdoor bowls clubs – there are 74 clubs within Hertfordshire. They can all be found at http://www.hertsba.com/HB14%20Clubs/ 1%20Clubs.htm John Turkentine is a CoachBowls Level One Coach at Harpenden & District Indoor and Batchwood Hall Outdoor Bowling Clubs.
