WELCOME TO MIMAGAZINE Your local magazine for Redbourn, Markyate, Flamstead, Caddington, Slip End, Aley Green, Woodside, Kensworth, Whipsnade, Studham, Dagnall, Ringshall and the Gaddesdens.
It is a wonderful me of year as there is so much going on in the Her ordshire and Bedfordshire villages. The long days and warm weather brings everyone out of their homes, to enjoy our wonderful country. The biggest event of the month without doubt, has been the Markyate Street party to celebrate HM the Queen’s 90th birthday and what an amazing day it was, with people coming from all around the area to enjoy the fes vi es. Please see my full report star ng on page 46. All the villages have been busy and we have done our best to visit most of the fairs and fêtes so look inside to see if you have been caught on camera. The new format Mimagazine is working well for readers, adver sers and us, the publishers and we have had some good feedback about the improved quality and increased circula on. Mimagazine is a great way to adver se local businesses to local people. Now, with a far reaching audience of 10,000 households and a poten al 40,000 readership, magazine adver sing s ll outstrips on line adver sing for effec veness, brand awareness and value. The key advantage to magazine adver sing is that magazines hang around in people’s homes on their coffee and kitchen tables as an unobtrusive and effec ve prod for ge ng your business message across to your poten al customer base. Electronic adver sing flashes past; magazine adver sing stays the distance. Please engage with Mimagazine and tell us your stories, give us your news. If you are a business we can offer you a business profile to help you market your products and services. This is what we want from you: • No ce of key village events like fairs, school events, business open days and the like. We are happy to a end with camera and notepad. • News of you or your children’s successes. It might be for sport/charity or any other achievement that is worthy of publica on. • News of your business. Is it new? Is it celebra ng an anniversary? Are you doing any special promo ons? I look forward to hearing from you and mee ng you.

he rearranged North Home Coun es Challenge Cup Final between the Markyate Swans and Slip End United was held in 24 degrees of sunshine at Creasey Park Dunstable on Sunday 8th May. It was a wellsupported match and there was great excitement from the Swan’s supporters as they had never been in a final before. The Swans are in the fourth division whilst Slip End is in the third division.
Ryan Cowley (vice captain) had to be stretchered off the pitch in the second half and taken to hospital with a torn anterior cruciate ligament. We wish him well and hope to see him back in the team next season. This season Slip End United did lose in the Bedfordshire Centenary County Cup final but on 15th May went on to win the Ted Zipfel trophy 5 2 in a good game which Ted thoroughly enjoyed. The scorers were Craig Shepherd (reserve goalkeeper) who went on in the last 10 minutes. Rory Nagle scored in what was his trial game, Joseph Powell and Carl Inns but scored two, and was named ‘Man of the Match’.
Number 4, Joseph Powell scored the only goal for Slip End in the 15th minute to win 1 nil and he was awarded ‘Man of the Match’. Speaking to Slip End’s manager, Carl Inns a er the match, he said, “We have won the double [Challenge Cup and North Coun es 3rd Division Cup] in the last three seasons since I took over as manager. We were the Slip End reserve side in the previous two seasons but the club has just one side this season as my dad, who previously managed the first team, decided to take a step back from management.” “My dad, myself and other volunteers have put an awful lot of work in to make the club as successful as it is today, but days like yesterday [8th May] are definitely worth all the work we put in. My dad is there every week to be linesman he washes the kit, raises much needed funds and we (along with Andy Prothero) look a er the pitch in our spare me. Sarah Minigan deserves a thank you as she has filled in where needed and she had applied for and got grants for new goalposts, a new pitch marker, and sponsors for new kits and training tops over the last 3 or 4 seasons,” said Carl.

Product Tas ngs and Food Fair 20th/21st May at Harpers Half Moon Lane, Pepperstock. Report by Janet Brown I went along to sample the ’weekend tasters’; delicious savoury sauces with chicken, and the mouth watering sausage rolls. How could I resist? The chicken breast came with either Argen ne Fire, Piri Piri, Cielo Rosso or Lemon and Coriander along with three different flavours from their sausage roll collec ons. The photos say it all. Best of all it was free!

WIN ONE OF THESE WONDERFUL BOOKS We have 2 to give away HEROES OF A DIFFERENT KIND July the 1st marks 100 years since the Ba le of the Somme, one of World War One’s most significant events, in which more than one million men were wounded or killed. As we pause this summer to remember those soldiers who made the ul mate sacrifice on the Somme ba lefields, a new book takes a look at how it wasn’t just soldiers who ‘fought’ in the First World War but why animals also played an important role. Most people are familiar with the use of horses and their o en heroic ac ons in the First World War, but what about camels, monkeys, canaries and even the mighty elephant? From mascots to messengers, animals played a hugely important role in almost every aspect of war me life and in this wonderfully illustrated book you learn about how they were trained and used, hearing some of their incredible individual stories. Animals in the First World War, by Peter Street, is available from The Royal Bri sh Legion’s online store, The Poppy Shop, at www.poppyshop.org.uk for just £6, where you’ll also find a host of other products commemora ng the Ba le of the Somme. he St George’s Fun Day was opened by The Villager of The Year, Anne e McGovern and held at the Heathfield Centre on Sunday 24th April, with Lorna Kalisz as Mistress of Ceremonies. The Children's Fancy Dress Pageant was done and dusted quite quickly, as there were only three entrants! The stalls, most of which were situated inside due to the chill in the wind, offered unique arts, cra s and foods. Included were hand cra ed cards, plaques, pictures, homemade jams, preserves, cakes, pies and desserts, jewellery, scarves, gi s, and glassware. Entertainment included the Dance House Academy; Ciara Dineen and Joe Palfrey playing Jazz; Rock Chorus and Threefold with Jill Rumney on the piano. The outside entertainment included, a bouncy castle, merry go round, fire engine, police car, more games and a ‘pe ng farm’. The farm is based at Bellingdon End, near Chesham. Kate Buckle said, ‘We regularly visit local schools when invited and take the animals along. This is an ideal way for children to learn and understand about caring for the animals and their needs’. Also outside were vintage cars, archery, and Oscar the Central Bedfordshire car simulator which included a three

Local Business Focus Talking to Ben of B.P.L. Roofing Ltd.
“B.P.L. Roofing was a dream of mine when I was 11yearsold,” said Ben Large, Managing Director of B.P.L. Roofing. “My dad Phil, was a roofer and I wanted to follow in his footsteps,” he added. When Ben was growing up, he spent most Saturdays as well as the occasional Sunday working with his father. He started off as the coffee maker but he really wanted to learn the trade and when the me came, he did his work experience with the roofing company which employed his father. “The day a er my first GCSE exam I started in full me employment,” said Ben. Knowing that driving would be the main tool for the job, Ben learned to drive as soon as he could and just six months a er his 17th birthday, he passed his test. He worked with his father for five years, alongside another colleague called Gary. “It was January 2008 when my big break came” said Ben. “The country was in recession and on the first day back a er the Christmas holidays I was told that I no longer had a job!” Ben’s parents gave him a loan of £1,000 with which he bought a van from Manchester for £300, a roof rack and a set of ladders. “I knew I was on to building my dream B.P.L. Roofing had started to trade!” said Ben. It was hard for the first five years as Ben had no experience of running a business. “My dad became my business partner and it started to get easier; my wife Mia became the back bone of the company and we are now ge ng stronger and stronger.”

There are currently 11 members of staff in total which include family and friends. Ben’s brother Stephen works with them along with Gary who he worked with during his appren ceship. Dean, one of his closest friends who was also on the same appren ceship, works with them as the Company Supervisor along with Lee, Richard, John, Charlie and Danny. “I never in my wildest dreams thought B.P.L. Roofing Ltd. would be as successful as it is now. So once every year, as a team, we go away for a long weekend to reward ourselves and to do some team building,” said Ben. Their weekends away are not all about partying. Last year they went to the Lake District, walked up Helvellyn, jumped off cliffs into Ullswater and also kayaked. The previous year they hiked up Mount Snowdon and did some go kar ng. They also experienced the longest zip wire in Europe and went coasteering. This year’s event hasn't been booked as yet but whatever they decide, it will be an ac on packed weekend of fun. “Since I started the company we have repaired, renewed and installed 100s of roofs from pitched roofs to flat roofs along with UPVC fascia, soffit and gu ering; but the project that stands out the most for me and gives me most pleasure is the renewal of the cedar shingle roof on Dunstable Downs Golf Club. Not only because it’s an iconic building in an area I grew up in, but also because our company was up against five other roofing companies, one of which was my former employer, so gaining the contract gave me a great sense of achievement and pride,” said Ben. Ben believes that anyone can create a great business if they are determined, have thorough knowledge of their cra and have good customer communica on skills. “I would love my story to inspire the young trainees of today,” said a very sa sfied Ben Large.

Redbourn Fun Run 22nd May Report and photos by Janet Brown
T
he Fun Run was a day filled with fun, laughter and plenty of sunshine; there wasn’t a sad face to be seen. All the races were very well supported, with par cipants of all ages, from babies in buggies and those pushing them to senior members of the village. There were 735 entrants, (355 in the 1km, 200 in the 3km and 180 in the 5km) with an es mated 1,200 a ending and suppor ng The 1km race was started by Mrs Byrne, the head teacher of the infant school; the 3km by Mr Hairon, the head of the junior school and the 5km by Annie Brewster.
Funds raised by the fun run exceeded £7,500 and will be shared between the Redbourn Infant and Nursery School and the Redbourn Junior School. Runners were encouraged to raise sponsorship money for a local charity ‘Up on Downs’, a parent run charity which supports families of children with Down's syndrome. So far money raised is in excess of £3,000. All compe tors who finished their race were given a medal. Throughout the event there was plenty of entertainment and a range of wonderfully decorated stalls with offerings as diverse as sweets for the children to cars for dads to sit in! I think the photos say it all.

Need for Speed… By Melanie Wooding Jones – Redbourn Auto Solu ons, Caring for you and your car
R
oad crashes are the number one killer of young people. Every 1.5 seconds, someone is killed or seriously injured on our roads. Five people die every day on Bri sh roads and one child is killed every week. With these stats it is hard to see why we would ignore the limits set. And let’s face it, modern, quieter cars make it easy don’t they! Whether lack of me, thrill of speed, impulsiveness, anger, or our own percep on regarding our confidence, capability and control when driving, poten ally puts us at risk.
What is the limit? The majority of drivers on the road took their test a long me ago and not many review the Highway Code or their driving again before they are 70+. Take a look at the table below. Can you remember what the limits are? (We’ve added a couple to help you…) Built Up Areas Cars and Motorcycles

Congratula ons! Presumably you got all the answers right as you are a competent driver with a good deal of experience? Or did you have a discussion with someone about what a single carriageway was or how fast you can go on a dual carriageway? Either way, the Highway Code has been updated, so it is worth having a copy. Perhaps find them on social media and they’ll challenge your knowledge daily!
Psychology behind the driver So we’ve established that we now know the speed limits; let’s take a look at why we some mes choose to break them. It is probably unsurprising news that, as humans, we have an op mis c bias. This means we want to believe we can win the lo ery no ma er what the odds are. We want to believe we are that infallible driver. The majority of accidents happen when we are closest to work, home or another des na on we are comfortable with. Why? We become complacent. We forget to look out for hazards, because we are familiar with the roads we are driving on. We know the rules, but when our emo ons get involved, whether judging our own driving or the driving of others, situa ons can escalate. How many mes have you judged someone’s driving as dangerous Con nued on page 30...

30 and decided to give them a quick beep to let them know? The likelihood is that you received an adverse response. Our emo ons can intensify situa ons which then become dangerous to other road users. And although it is almost shameful to admit, Disney got it right with that slightly irrita ng song ‘Let It Go’! If we could drive on without comment and let the behaviour of others pass us by, we would be safer.
Technology Car safety has improved significantly. You just have to look at the metal mirrors mounted on the bonnet of a Ford Anglia (the flying car in Harry Po er), or the metal bumpers to see how this could cause harm. Modern cars have bodies styled to minimise injury, crumple zones and air bags to protect pedestrians, driver and passengers. Together with advances in medical science, these are the reasons why there are less injuries or fatali es on the road. Advances in components such as tyre and brake compounds ensure our stopping distance is reduced. However, it is our thinking me that con nues to put us at risk. We all have different reac on mes and other condi ons such as, me of day, redness, weather and even the music we play, affects our concentra on. It is much easier and safer to consider the two second rule to give yourself enough space to react in an adverse situa on.
Safety It is great to know that our cars are safer. There is more legisla on around to protect us from harm, but this is also reliant on us ensuring that our cars are roadworthy. The automo ve industry is an unlicensed trade. Anyone can set up a car repair facility and not be qualified to do so. Quality of parts also differ significantly, with the cheaper parts more likely to fail when you most need them. This is why manufacturers’ warran es are only maintained if original parts or original equivalent parts are used. Please consider your choices wisely and nd make sure that your car and its parts are maintained regularly.
pushed into the road, children running, cyclists, pedestrians crossing roads between cars, etc. Remember, when accidents happen on the motorway, it can go spectacularly wrong due to the high impact of speed.
Consequences If your standard falls below that of a ‘competent and prudent’ driver, then you are pu ng yourself and others at risk. The benchmark for driving with due care and a en on is the Driving Test. How many of us can say we drive with exactly the same diligence as we did when we first passed our test? Most people believe that being caught speeding, using a mobile phone, jumping lights, etc. means facing a maximum find of £2,500, 3 penalty points and a probable increase in the cost of insurance. But the impact on you is more than this. If you are unfortunate enough to be involved in an accident, the emo onal scar remains both with you and your vic m along with wider and family and friends who are relied on for support. In some circumstances you could have your licence revoked. A magistrate does not have to issue 3 points at a me; they could jump straight to a ban. Imagine the impact of this if you rely on your car for work… and the other ramifica ons which may follow as a result of losing your licence.
Think twice before speeding. Make sure your vehicle is reliable and roadworthy… and next me you are on the road, think about the hazards around you. The consequences of missing them can be fatal.
Across the UK in 2014, 1,775 people were killed on our roads, 22,807 were seriously harmed and there were 194,477 casual es. The majority of these accidents were as a result of human error. Her ordshire Constabulary have reported that in our county: 64% of accidents are in urban areas, 24% in rural areas and 12% on motorways. Our motorway incidents are 8% higher than the na onal average due to having a large amount of busy motorway miles in the county. There is a high concentra on of hazards in urban areas, so you have to expect the unexpected. Prams being

ceremony was the tradi onal Maypole dancing which was performed by children from Studham Village School. The stalls and entertainment events were busy all a ernoon, and the dog show was very popular and compe ve. The ‘Pe ng Farm’, a current favourite a rac on at local shows, had some new li le friends; the naked mouse and the Tamworth wild boar. They have tame and friendly animals which any pet lover would gladly take home. The farm gives children an understanding of how to handle and feed a range of animal species of all different sizes. All the animals are bred on a farm in Bellingdon, Chesham. Over £6,000 was raised between the fun dog show, the stalls, the raffle, the entertainment sideshows and the Pimms tent! Eleven teams had an enjoyable evening answering ques ons on various subjects and iden fying some not so familiar road signs. A er a keenly fought contest,
The Commi ee express their thanks to all those who supported the evening and helped raise nearly £380 for the Show.
The Quiz is held to raise funds towards the costs of the Annual Flower & Vegetable Show, which has run in its current format since 2008. For several years it was organised by Margo Manton who sadly passed away in November 2014.
Obituary Anthony (AJ) Sinfield of Kensworth Eighty eight year old Tony Sinfield of Kenworth passed away in May a er a short illness. The Sinfield family moved from Dunstable in 1958 to Dovehouse Farm where they kept pigs, ca le and were well known for growing potatoes. When some family members decided to move on, Tony, his wife Enid and their two children Toni and Philip, remained on the farm where they moved gradually towards arable farming. Tragically, Enid died in a farming accident in 1966. Twenty five years ago, Tony swapped houses with his daughter Toni; he moved into her bungalow in the village and she took on the farmhouse.
He was well enough to celebrate his 88th birthday at the Hunter’s Lodge in April. Although he had been in hospital several mes he remained ac ve un l the end.
PUZZLE ANSWERS
Tony helped Toni start the very successful TC Feeds and The Tack Haven feed and equestrian retail
outlet in the outbuildings of Dovehouse Farm where it is s ll a thriving business today. Once Tony re red from farming, he was a daily visitor to Dovehouse Farm, taking a keen interest in all aspects of the farm and the business and was always on hand to help out with errands. He was ac vely involved with Young Farmers’ Club as a member, parent and as a keen senior ci zen. He loved to chat to everyone about everything, even if he didn’t know them. He was well known and very popular in the village and will be sadly missed by many.

LAMSTEAD Book Fes val has a racted hundreds of visitors as it goes from strength to strength.
The third Books in the Belfry was held at St.Leonard's Church. It kicked off with thriller writer Renee Knight whose debut work Disclaimer has been in the best seller lists this year as well as being nominated for a number of book awards. The line up also featured biographer Dermot Turing the nephew of legendary Bletchley Park code breaker Alan Turing and Edd Kimber, known as the Bake Off Boy following his win in the first BBC Great Bri sh Bake Off Show back in 2010. Interviewed by BBC Radio Four presenter Sybil Ruscoe he spoke to a packed venue over tea and scones about life in the Bake Off tent and filming with Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood. There was also a children's story telling session, a workshop with crea ve wri ng mentor Debi Alper and a sports’ session featuring Alan Fraser whose book The

Hitler Trophy tells the fascina ng story of golf at the 1936 Olympics. West End actor and Flamstead resident Clive Hayward brought the curtain down on the two day Fes val with an evening of music, poetry and prose ranging from the Bard to Bart. Crea ve wri ng expert Debi Alper had this to say, "Flamstead is a small and perfectly formed Fes val with a range of events. Respect and thanks to the organisers. Lovely to meet you all and thank you to all the Flamstead team for their warmth and hospitality." Proceeds will help support the Friends of St. Leonards (FOSL) in raising funds to help restore and safeguard the medieval wall pain ngs in the village church. Waterstones in St. Albans also supported the Fes val selling books on both days. Markyate Mooners at the London Moon Walk
O
n Saturday 14th May, Samantha Angel, accompanied by three other mums from the village Jane Finlay Natalie Ba ershill and Dawn Wilkinson donned their bras and headed off to Clapham Common to join 15,000 other women (and a few men) to walk 26.2 miles to help raise money for breast cancer.
Samantha told me, “This year’s theme was ‘Carnival’ so following a gruelling training programme which involved four months of 6.30am Saturday morning training sessions and at least one or two evening training sessions per week, the biggest excitement has been the decora ng of our bras. Jane is the most ‘cra y’ one of the group so we le it to her but we all put our ideas forward!” They started the walk just a er midnight and walked all night into Sunday morning, finally crossing

the finish line shortly a er 8am! They are just a group of normal women who discussed the idea about six months ago and decided to sign up and take on the challenge. They decided to call themselves 'The Markyate Mooners' linking them to the name of the sponsored walk which was the London Moonwalk. So far they have raised around £1,800. Brilliant! You can donate to this worthy cause by visi ng www.walkthewalk.org/donate/ You can now register for 2017 London Moon Walk which will be on May 13th.

was so ‘hyped’ a er the Street Party that I found it hard to sleep. It was a resounding success and I am sure that many of the party goers, like myself, found it hard to relax a er the buzz of the superÂcharged fes vi es. The children would have either conked out with sheer exhaus on or spent the twilight hours, reliving the magical events of the day.
Busy prepara ons
Eight hundred ckets were sold but there must have been around 1,500 people ďŹ lling the High Street from end to end. Those from outside the village heard early reports of how good it was and came along to see for themselves. One family from Redbourn said, “This is the best Street Party we have ever seen.â€? Redbourn and Caddington have busy and inclusive community events and I have always thought that Markyate was lacking in this way, but a er
the Street Party you would have to say, “Top that if you can neighbouring villages.â€? Of course it is not a compe on between villages but I have heard some Markyate residents who have been here for many genera ons say, “Markyate is just a dormitory village; people sleep here but work and make their social lives outside of the village.â€? I have tended to agree with them un l 12th June 2016 when everything changed... Old Markyaters, mid term Markyaters and new Markyaters, all came together to have the best party ever. Maybe there was a good one a er the war, or for the Silver Jubilee in 1977 but certainly this is the best thing that has happened in the village for a long, long me. It was old fashioned fun which re kindled the tradi onal values of talking to your neighbours, cooking and sharing food and drink with people from the opposite side of the street; laughing and joking and spending me with people who live nearby. For once, children were free to run and play with each other in their own street without the fear of being run over by a vehicle; they experienced a day to remember for the rest of their lives. What it also proved was that you don’t need to spend a lot of money to have the best me. For just ÂŁ2 for adults and no charge for children, you were given a celebra on bag containing snacks; each table got a big bo le of Coke and they were served on patrio c red, white and blue table covers. People had their own barbecues or picnics and brought plenty of bo les of booze but it was equally cheap to buy food from the various vendors in the street.

Organiser Parish Councillor Sheila Pilkinton receives flowers of thanks from Nick Robeson
Revellers could get a box of Indian food from the Pavilion for just £5; great value fish and chips from the chippy; barbeque food was on sale from several cooking points along the High Street that were collec ng for chari es; there was a Pimms bar and the Swan Inn and The Local offered great ‘watering holes’ for many. Eight hundred people were seated at tables but many more wandered up and down over the four hours, observing the various groups, stopping to chat and have a drink, taking photos or simply enjoying the exhilara ng atmosphere.
looked amazing. Unclu ered as a car free zone, you could fully appreciate the beau ful old houses, the 18th and 19th century architecture, pleasingly mixed with the newer houses, all standing in witness to the ever changing mes of Markyate High Street. The red, white and blue union flag bun ng zig zagged over head from lamp post to drain pipe to gable end and many people had added their own bun ng, flags, and pictures of the Queen and Royal Family to their windows and doors. Everyone observed the ruling to remove their vehicles by 9am except one black Audi that wasn’t moved un l around midday! You can never get 100% of people on board but a massive majority of residents were happy to have the road closed for 12 hours and clear the street of their cars and bins. One though ul resident had the scaffolding removed from their house so it wouldn’t spoil the look of the street. How considerate!
A busy morning of prepara on got underway at 9am, when a group of 50 or so volunteers met at the Fire Sta on to begin work. The road had to be cleared, around 2000 metres of bun ng had to be hung across the street, the tables and chairs had to be laid and dressed, the food bags distributed and the sound system erected and tested. And all this took place in on and off rain showers. Everything was ready to go but would the rain stop play? The last umbrella came down at around 1pm and raincoats and hats were removed. Our sun dance had worked and the rain held off for the whole of the a ernoon except for a slight spi ng at around 4pm. The first entertainers were ready and wai ng and at 1.30pm promptly; the party was officially opened. The talented folk trio ‘Said The Maiden’ were introduced and the proceedings were under way. They gently got us into the mood with a repertoire of sweet sounding folk songs which were performed as the party goers began to assemble and take their seats. The cap twists and cork pops could soon be heard as the drinks were opened and poured and the smell of barbecue smoke soon permeated the air. Following the live entertainment, music was played all day. Much effort had gone into the broadcast and we were taken chronologically through the decades of the Queen’s 90 years with popular music from every genre from the 1920s to the present day and whatever age you were, you could re live your era and remember the best music of your genera on. The war songs reminded me of my parents; the Beatles, Rolling Stones and Who my brother and Queen and Motown brought back great memories of my youth. Local Markyate bakers Prudens baked a huge celebra on cake and every table had their own smaller cake to share around. This was all included in the £2! The High Street

She conducted a round of Happy Birthday Your Majesty, followed by some s rring patrio c songs a la Last Night of the Proms with two rounds of God Save The Wicked Lady of Markyate the Queen; one a er comperes the show the sing song and one to signal the end of the party. So many sang hear ly, in great spirits and the joy in people’s faces is evident in the thousands of photos that were taken by so many smart phones, tablets and professional cameras. There were

tradi onal novel es like ‘pin the tail on the donkey’ and other games and ac vi es for the children. It was a magical day indeed. The Parish Council have o en been cri cised by newcomers for not being proac ve enough but you have to take your hat off to Sheila Pilkinton, chairman of the Budget and Finance Commi ee and the team behind her and Pat Bunyan PC chairman, who pulled this event off so successfully. It was a massive hit. Congratula ons and thank you to all who worked relessly to make it happen and give so much pleasure to the people of Markyate. Sheila said that she had worked all night before the party started which shows how much energy and commitment she has put into it. Now the voices to be heard say, “We want more!” So let’s see this as the turning point for bigger and be er community events in Markyate. One person wrote on Markyate Ma ers, “Can we do this every year?” Another asked for an annual event for the village to which another replied, “We have an annual village event – the May Fayre.” This is true but it is looking a bit red and needs to be reinvented and modernised to a ract the crowds in the way that the Street Party has. My neighbour Phil said next day, “We can’t stop talking about the Street Party; it was so good.” Another, Helen, said of the photo of the group of children si ng on the wall, “This photo will go down in Markyate history and in 100 years’ me, people will look back and say, ‘This was a group of Markyate youngsters of 2016 celebra ng Queen Elizabeth II’s 90th birthday.’” I think a Christmas Market would work well in the High Street and would bring some community spirit and Christmas magic to the village. Do the Parish Council have the energy for something like this? Let’s hope so. Now you have shown us what you can do – we want more!

MARKYATE PLANT SALE IS A RECORDBREAKER AGAIN!
Plant Sale Wai ng to Pay
T
he 19th annual Markyate Plant Sale which was held on 21st May, raised a record £9,836 for Berkhamsted charity The Hospice of St Francis – bea ng last year’s total by over £320. The sale of over 7,000 plants to more than 700 green fingered visitors will help the Hospice to edge closer to the £4.8m it needs every year to provide free, specialist care for people facing life limi ng illness throughout Herts and Bucks. A delighted Ian Bradley event organiser said, “We managed to reach a very wide audience through Facebook, Twi er, print and radio. The rain held off and everyone who came was in a buying mood.” “Thanks to our dedicated band of volunteers, we had over 50 varie es of high quality plants for sale which were tended from plugs throughout the growing period in greenhouses kindly made available by Rothamsted Research.” Over 130 pre ordered hanging baskets and containers were sold and whilst people browsed or enjoyed a freshly brewed tea and coffee and delicious homemade

cakes and rolls, the Ionian Clarinet Quartet entertained. Amongst the guests at this year’s event were the Mayor of Dacorum, Councillor Robert McLean, Hemel Hempstead MP, Mike Penning and Alison Woodhams, Chair of Trustees at the Hospice. Sarah Ajder, Community Fundraiser at the Hospice, said, “I’m thrilled that the Plant Sale has broken all previous records – again! It’s a privilege to work with such a dedicated team of volunteers who love suppor ng the Hospice as much as they do the plants that they grow to sell. The quality and range of plants was again outstanding! “Since the Plant Sale started in 1997, it has raised a total of over £74k for the Hospice, which is remarkable. It’s marvellous that it con nues to be a magnet for all discerning gardeners looking for top quality fare and a family fun day out,” said Ian Bradley. “It’s such a pleasure working with such a great bunch of people for such a worthwhile cause. Next year will be the Plant Sale’s 20th anniversary and of course we hope it will break even more records!” he added. For more informa on about The Hospice of St Francis, visit www.s rancis.org.uk

Herts County Show Great weather brought out the spectators in their droves at Herts County Show on 28th and 29th May
M
imagazine had a trade stand at the show and it was a good opportunity for us to meet many of our readers and adver sers. Taking a bit of me out from working, the three of us did some shopping. We all loved the food shopping in the food hall and if you leave it un l the end of day two, you get some good bargains. Janet Brown from Mimag bought venison and pork and leek sausages two packs for £5 instead of three for £10; steak pies six for £10 instead of
four; delicious pastries and breads reduced from £3 to £1. I indulged in some English sparkling wine and some savoury pies which was a nice treat a er two days of exhibi ng in the open air. Taking me to enjoy the a rac ons, my favourites were the breath taking Devil’s Horsemen stunt team and the heart stopping Bolddog motorcycle display. I couldn’t believe what those stunt cyclists could do with their bikes in the air!
