Family run hotel reopens with a new Executive Chef
Reopening after a six-month closure, The Linton team is excited to announce their partnership with Executive Chef Fabrizio Morelli, who brings a wealth of experience and flair to Carriages restaurant. With a career spanning over 20 years, Fabrizio is keen to share his passion for creating new dishes with only the freshest ingredients. Hailing from a small village in southern Italy, he completed his catering schooling in Italy and moved to London at the tender age of 17. Starting his career out as demi chef at Charing Cross Hotel London, he later moved to the Mithras group of wine bars in the city of London (Chapters, Swithins, Mithras and Guild), where he worked as chef and then Executive Chef. He has been at the helm of various other leading Italian restaurants in London, including as Executive Chef for 10 years at Little Italy in Soho, opening their sister restaurant Nolita in Brookmans Park. He was also Executive Chef for Gino D’Acampo and opened the Gino D’Acampo My Pasta Bars in London. A three-year run at the Green Man in Clophill followed where he won the Best Fine Dining Restaurant in Bedfordshire Award in 2016. Fabrizio is looking forward to welcoming old and new customers alike to Carriages. He is happiest creating simple yet elegant Mediterranean dishes with flair and a modern twist. “Food should not just look good, it should taste good”. The Linton is an independent family run hotel that offers a lounge bar, Italian restaurant, personal work hubs (on an hourly rate), meeting rooms, bedrooms and function rooms. Located North of Harpenden and South of Luton, it offers easy access to the M1, London Luton Airport, Luton Parkway railway station and Capability Green business park free parking, free WiFi and Stockwood Park and golf course opposite. Covid 19 restrictions return Your local magazine for Redbourn, Kinsbourne Green and North Harpenden, Markyate, Flamstead, Caddington, Slip End, Aley Green, Woodside, Kensworth, Whipsnade, Studham and the Gaddesdens.
In this issue, we have some interesting articles from our regular contributors: Redbourn Auto Solutions discuss the rush to buy second hand cars during the pandemic, Sherrards caution us on who we trust with our money and Capital Manor discuss the question of long life and adequate pension provision. All good reads to take our minds off Covid 19. I hope you like the front covers we have designed recently which have been inspired by the pandemic. In the last six months, there have been some prevailing themes: the virus, rainbows for hope, masks, social distancing and good old Captain Tom. We are now using paper from responsible sources for this magazine and the laminate cover will also we switched next issue. We’ll be back before Christmas and hope the restrictions don’t result in full lock-down! Sue Mitchell t/a MiMagazine

Keep supporting your local restaurant and pub but check it is safe ... Cllr James Jamieson, Leader of Central Bedfordshire Council said: “Sadly we have had numerous reports about businesses who don’t follow the rules and we are taking enforcement action including prosecution. “But residents can also play their part by simply refusing to spend their money with a business that puts profit before health. “All businesses that deal with the public face to face have had to take customer contact details, by law, since Friday 18th September for NHS Test and Trace. From Thursday 24th September businesses will also need to display the COVID-19 App QR code. “But there are other measures businesses must be taking to keep their customers and everybody else as safe as possible. • Is it recording customer details for test and trace? This must include the NHS QR code from Thursday 24th September • Social distancing: Has it introduced (where possible) a booking system? Or is controlling customer numbers at the door? • Has it measures to socially distance any queue?
•
• • • • • • •
Has it introduced no service at the bar/counter with food and drink brought to customers’ tables only? Customers must be seated while eating and drinking Avoiding close contact with staff: Are staff wearing visors/face coverings when close to customers i.e. while serving food? Are customers wearing them except when eating and drinking? Have they introduced automatic ordering of food and drinks via a downloaded smart phone app – where possible! Hand washing and cleaning: Are there facilities for increased handwashing and/or hand sanitiser at key points especially at the entrance? Is there regular cleaning of surfaces? Such as cleaning the table and chairs between customer use in a restaurant?”

The challenges of staying open during Covid-19 MiMagazine talked to Kay, owner of Charisma Hairdressing and Beauty Salon, Caddington about the changes to her working life. We reopened Charisma on the 4th July, after 14 weeks of closure. During this time, I researched the safety requirements thoroughly and I was sure that we were able to open safely. It wasn’t an easy task as information was changing and being updated by the government regularly. The time off did give us the chance to do something positive by freshening-up the décor in the salon. We began contacting clients at the end of June to book them into the diary and many of them were happy to hear from us as they missed the contact with us by their visits to the salon. During lockdown I was able to prepare the salon and to buy lots of disposable items to prepare for the re-opening. I purchased over 700 masks, 450 gloves, 1175 disposable aprons and 200 disposable gowns! The first few days of reopening were stressful both mentally and physically. Getting used to wearing the PPE, remembering to follow the arrows in the salon and keeping our distance from each other was testing but we soon got used to it. I went home very tired each day, in a zombie state in the evenings and on Sundays. My supportive husband took care of our home, so I could preserve my energy for the following working day. It was lovely to see all the clients again and they were happy to return. In the beginning, the weekly clients were asked to just come in fortnightly and the fortnightly clients were asked to come in monthly; that gave us time to catch up with the 350+ clients that we needed to fit into the diary. Eight weeks in and most of the weekly and fortnightly clients are back to their regular appointments, and we have seen most of them now. We take the staff and clients’ temperature when they arrive in the salon. None of our clients and staff come by public transport and I think that keeps us safer. Virtually all the customers pay contactless which covers more clients now that the maximum amount has gone up to £45 per transaction. It is not so easy to make conversation wearing masks and face shields, so not as much

chat occurs between the client and stylist which is a negative but we all know we have to put up with it to keep everybody safe. We only used two out of the six styling chairs when we opened and we added extra hours on Wednesdays for a couple of months to spread the staff hours out to ensure that everyone could keep to 2 to 2 1/2 metres apart. Once we had got used to the salon set up, we were able to have a third chair in use, therefore allowing a third member of staff to work safely in the salon. We clean and sanitise all areas in between clients. It has not taken too long to get used to the new normal. Prior to opening, I spent about £1,500 on PPE! It’s an ongoing expense now but it is VAT free which helps a great deal. The government has been very supportive with grants for self-employed people and furlough money for staff, and I could claim a grant from the council if I needed to. The gowns are now in short supply so I use the normal gowns and get them washed at 60° after every use. I bristle at putting disposable aprons and gloves into the bin, creating so much plastic waste when we were not so long ago trying to cut back on plastic use to save the planet! As long as we are allowed to, we will continue to work and tend to our clients’ locks safely, wondering when we will ever get back to something that resembles the old normal. Stay safe. Grove Theatre comes up with appealing sponsorship packages to save its life On the 20th March 2020, Grove Theatre closed its doors due to the global pandemic. Ticket sales, hire and secondary income ground to a halt overnight and now six months later the doors remain closed. It is now facing extreme financial challenges and management is doing everything it can to obtain external funding, including government grants to secure its future, but help from supporters is vital. This ongoing uncertainty puts theatres in a perilous situation. The government’s bailout is spread across all cultural organisations and certainly won’t be enough to save all of the UK’s theatres. Without urgent support, we could lose our nation’s amazing theatres. Here are the interesting options for supporting Grove. You can visit their donation page and donate anything from as little as £10. £100 or more- You can be an Education Angel to show support for their education projects and your name will be printed in all future programmes produced for education productions as a thank you. £20 or more - Grove Supporter You will receive a digital thank you from the Grove Theatre on their supporters section of the Website. £50 or more - Technical Tour A wonderful opportunity to spend an hour with their technical team, learning about backstage, seeing how much work goes in to producing the incredible shows and a chance to ask all your questions. £150 or more - Sponsor a Seat Your name will be engraved on to a plaque which will be mounted on the back of one of the auditorium chairs. The perfect gift for a loved one or friend. Personalise your plaque with an inscription of up to 10 words. Plaques will be in place for up to 10 years. The management reserves the right to remove plaques due to major refurbishments or operational needs. £500 or more - Sponsor a Box Your name will be engraved on to a plaque which will be mounted on the front of the box. The perfect gift for a loved one or friend. Personalise your plaque with an inscription of up to 10 words. Plaques will be in place for up to 10 years. Be Careful Who You Trust With Your Money
Sometimes your nearest and dearest are simply not the right people for the job. Shamed daughter, Karen Wakeling has been jailed for stealing more than £80,000 from her elderly mother - who suffers from dementia. Wakeling made a series of transactions, taking money from her mother’s account to fund holidays, pay off debts and even using her cash to pay for her 40th birthday party at a hotel in Hunstanton whilst acting as her mother’s attorney She had denied fraud, but a jury took just over an hour to find her guilty of fraud in January 2020. She has been jailed for 2 years. There is a natural assumption that “blood “ relatives will look after you, should the need arise, but in my work, I am seeing an increasing number of cases involving economic abuse by Attorneys. The reality is many of them do not see that they are doing anything wrong – they are just getting some of their inheritance early, or are “borrowing” money – but somehow it never gets paid back! I am afraid to say there are quite a large number of entitled children and relatives out there and they find it hard/ impossible to see beyond their own wishes and desires so they are not the people to entrust with the care of your finances, should you be unable to do these things your self. Investigations by the Office of the Public Guardian have jumped to record levels. In 2018/19 they carried out 2,883 investigations, compared to 1,871 in the previous years – a 55% increase. Most misconduct by attorneys does not come to light during the donor’s lifetime. OPG investigations of attorneys represent only a small proportion of abuses.
LPAs’; the drive to create LPAs online exposes people to unacceptable levels of risk and in doing so may be compromising the OPG’s ability to safeguard those who are most vulnerable. There are two ways in which this could happen: either by a donor being pressured to sign or agree to something that they do not understand or are not comfortable with, or by a fraudulent LPA being registered in a donor’s name without their consent. Retired Senior Judge of the Court of Protection, Denzil Lush, declared during a BBC Radio 4 interview, that he would refuse to sign a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) and went on to accuse the Ministry of Justice of being “disingenuous” in promoting the creation of DIY Lasting Powers of Attorney. As the Senior judge at the Court of Protection, Denzil Lush adjudicated 6,000 cases linked to abuse of powers of attorney. So before you create a Lasting Power of Attorney, take some independent advice and reality check who is the best person to look after you and your money. Looking for a used car? So is everyone else!
The impact of lockdown and the used car market The rising demand in the used car market has led to supply issues countrywide, so how can we be sure that our new purchase is a safe and reliable one! Why is demand outstripping supply? The supply chain of used cars stumbled as new car production halted during lockdown, leaving consumers waiting for their new cars and holding on to their part exchanges. In an uncertain climate, some also decided to hold on to their cars a little longer or to invest in a used vehicle. Demand increased as businesses turned to home delivery to keep their companies afloat requiring vans, scooters and small cars. We were encouraged to avoid public transport and people sought to travel safely by their own means whether for work, school or, recreation with an increase in cars per household. According to McKinsey, this is set to stay as a third of consumers value constant access to a vehicle more than they did before the pandemic. The situation has been compounded by the unfortunate situation for first-time drivers. Government departments were furloughed or worked from home, creating significant delays in new driving licenses. Driving instructors couldn’t work and tests halted. This has created a 6-month delay in purchasing ‘first’ cars. Add to this the MOT 6-month extension and the potential for purchasing a used car being significantly reduced. So, where do I find a safe and reliable car? With demand at a premium, there has been an increase in value in the second-hand car market. Where there is demand, people are waiting to exploit it! So, buyers really should beware and avoid To advertise call 07941 661004
Redbourn Autos.indd 24
impulsive purchases. The adage of ‘act in haste, repent at leisure’, really does apply here. The internet is a great place to start to identify what your budget will realistically achieve. There are plenty of private sellers on GumTree, Autotrader, FreeAds, etc. Auction houses are currently operating online, but certainly fun to go to when you are able, and you can pick up a good bargain. However, buying from a seller is a case of ‘buyer beware’ with very little recourse should anything go wrong. At Auction, all vehicles are ‘sold as seen’ with no protection at all. This includes on-line auctions. If you have a partexchange, be aware of sites that offer you an online price for your car. They often bring the value down when they physically see the vehicle and indeed staff are targeted on how much they bring you down by! The safest way to purchase is through a dealer where you enjoy legal protection and peace of mind. Whether a used car dealer or a main dealer, legal protection is the same. They are bound by the Sale of Goods Act to ensure everything they sell is: “Of satisfactory quality” – in keeping with its age, make, mileage etc. “Fit for purpose” – the vehicle is capable of carrying out all the functions you would expect. “Legal to drive” – it should meet all legal standards. “Matches its description” – all components mentioned in the advert should be in good working order. The dealer is not liable for wear and tear or any misuse. If buying from a used car dealer you will get a 3-month warranty and if they have a workshop, you can rest assured that the car is in a good safe condition through a pre-delivery inspection, or some will give the car a fresh service which is great for peace of mind. Because purchasing privately has limited legal constraints, buyers should: Please mention

• • • • • • •
Check all documentation is in order. Registered to the seller, details should match the car, current MOT, etc. MOT History – is the mileage consistent with the age and look of the car. Does it match the service history? Bodywork – check for a consistent colour and evenness across the panels, can you see any rust under the footwell mats or welding. Tyres – check consistent sufficient tread depth. Remember this would be an additional cost if they need replacing. Tool Kit – complete and present with spare-tyre. Lights – check all lights are fully functioning and ensure that there are no warning lights on the dashboard. Functional – does everything work? Washers, locks, windows, air con, radio, etc. Ask for a test drive and look out for:
• •
Clutch – test biting point is where it should be and not before it is almost fully engaged (a sign of wear and in need of replacement) Performance – ensure the car doesn’t pull to one side on acceleration and listen out for abnormal sounds and vibrations. Take the car over 60mph
Redbourn Autos.indd 25
• • •
to listen for any further unusual sounds. Gears – these should feel smooth Brakes – these need to be responsive and stop without pulling to one side Steering Wheel – vibrations should not be present.
Whichever car you purchase, do your homework! Know your budget, including maintenance costs, and be realistic about what you can get. If you’re a firsttime purchaser, take a look at our website to help you with your purchase. https://redbournautosolutions. co.uk/first-car-buying-guide/ We have become more dependent on our vehicles for many reasons, so it has become even more important to buy well and maintain them so that they are ready for when we need them. Once you’ve bought your car, make sure it is safe and reliable! We can help by providing a Safety Health Check, or a Service... or an MOT if it’s needed. If you want someone else to have the hassle of finding you a car or to help you with advice, ask the experts at Redbourn Auto Solutions and we would be pleased to help. RISK OF RETIREMENT ...LONGEVITY...
MAXIMISING INVESTMENT RETURNS OVER A LONGER LIFE EXPECTANCY There are lots of variables in retirement: how long people will live for, the costs of goods and services they will need, interest rates available on their accumulated savings, and so on. But once you have retired, investing is anything but straightforward. Your finances are a primary consideration, there’s no doubt about it. If you have insufficient income to pay your projected retirement expenses, or less surplus income than you anticipated, you could find yourself working years longer than you intended or facing a retirement lifestyle that may not be what you had in mind. PROTECTING YOUR INCOME STREAMS Once you have retired, you’ll have to juggle finding safe investments to protect your income streams so you do not risk running out of money in retirement. The fundamental point about investing after retirement is that you are speculating to accumulate with a pot of money that represents the main body of your financial wealth. However, once in the retirement stage, retirees often find that their actual costs are lower than they had expected. This situation can be the result of a number of factors. For instance, many expenses that absorbed a significant amount of your income in your working years may not exist during your retirement. CHANGING DEMANDS ON A RETIREE’S INCOME Other demands on a retiree’s income may also have changed or have been eliminated. Even if you retire more gradually, working part-time or perhaps periodically, the accompanying work related expenses may still be greatly reduced. Depending on your life stage, taking into account your children’s ages and the age at which you retire, you may also have finished paying their education-related costs. Other important factors to remember are that, in many cases, you are simply not having to save for retirement anymore. To advertise call 07941 661004
Capital Manor Nov Dec article.indd 26
ENJOYING A LONGER LIFE While it’s not a comfortable notion to think about, you also need to plan for the possibility that you may become disabled or incapacitated yourself during retirement. The reality is that enjoying a longer life can bring unexpected challenges such as illnesses, accidents and the effects of ageing, which can lead to additional expenses, including the cost of long-term care. You may be familiar with the rule of thumb that states you will need 70% of your pre-retirement income to sustain your lifestyle in retirement. In practice, however, this rule may be too general to address the very specific circumstances of each person’s retirement. While this level of income may be adequate for some, the number of your dependants, your debt levels and your lifestyle aspirations can sway your needs significantly up or down. MANAGING RISK APPROPRIATELY A ‘thinking ahead’ mind set is very important in your retirement planning. Do you foresee changes in your approach to investment management decisions when you retire? It can be hard for some retirees to tone down their risk appetite when investing in retirement. They’ve had decades of practice at investing for growth, after all. A properly diversified portfolio in retirement is key to maximising returns over a longer life expectancy while managing risk appropriately to avoid significant short-term losses. Retirees can take income from the conservative portion of their portfolios while allowing another portion to continue growing. FACING ANOTHER TYPE OF RISK While the risk of portfolio declines can’t be overlooked when investing in retirement, retirees also face another type of risk: the risk of running out of money in retirement. Even though we have low Please mention

inflation today, it’s critical for retirees to keep up with inflation. Pressure on the Bank of England to boost the economy and push inflation back to its 2% target is expected to intensify. Retirement investors who take an approach that includes equities throughout their savings years may also need to continue an element of this into retirement. If appropriate, some retirees may need to moderate the impulse to seek safe investments by including some growth-oriented ones in their portfolio, too. YOUR OWN UNIQUE LIFESTYLE NEEDS The challenge when investing after retirement is that no one investment or investment style can address the needs of a 30-year retirement. Each five-year segment, such as ages 65 to 70, or 70 to 75, has its own unique lifestyle needs and therefore investment needs. Money invested in the first two or three segments, during which time retirement income needs are highly affected by the stock and bond markets and the sequence of returns, should be invested more conservatively than money invested in later retirement years. EXPERIENCING VOLATILE RETURNS One of the most important aspects of successful investing in retirement is diversification. Holding funds in cash may be suited to some retirees planning to draw down their entire pot over a short period. To advertise call 07941 661004
Capital Manor Nov Dec article.indd 27
However, it is highly unlikely to be suited to someone planning to draw down their pot over a longer period. Diversifying investments across a number of different assets is important because it may help to reduce the risks of investing during this time of your life. By risk, we mean both that of losing money and that of experiencing volatile returns. Older investors have to balance the need to make withdrawals to live on in retirement with making sure they don’t run out of money. You’ve worked so hard to save, and now you’re finally retired. With the right strategy, you can help make sure your retirement savings last. Speak to us to discuss your options.
