Let us help you advertise your event Your local magazine for Redbourn, Kinsbourne Green and North Harpenden, Markyate, Flamstead, Caddington, Slip End, Aley Green, Woodside, Kensworth, Whipsnade, Studham Gaddesden Row.

I am pleased to see that the number of pages in MiMagazine is gradually increasing to its pre-covid levels. People are getting back to normal and events and places to go are busy again. We are seeing more pubs advertising as they welcome patrons once more and our What’s On pages are filling-up as people get out and about once more. Fingers crossed that the virus doesn’t scupper our Christmas this year. Not wanting to mention the ‘C’ word in September but as I write, there are 90 days to Christmas Day. Our next magazine is our festive issue so we will let you know how you can shop and celebrate locally. Until then, enjoy the autumn. Sue Mitchell For our nature lovers, Alan King spotted this Purple Hairstreak butterfly on Bradden Lane; this Yellow Wagtail was seen at Six Tunnels Farm and the Tawny Owl on Bradden Lane by George Moreton.

“PLANT A TREE FOR THE JUBILEE” WHAT IS THE QUEEN’S GREEN CANOPY? The Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC) is a unique tree planting initiative created to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022 which invites people from across the United Kingdom to “Plant a Tree for the Jubilee.” Everyone from individuals to Scout and Girlguiding groups, villages, cities, counties, schools and corporates will be encouraged to play their part to enhance our environment by planting trees from October, when the tree planting season begins, through to the end of the Jubilee year in 2022. With a focus on planting sustainably, the QGC will encourage planting of trees to create a legacy in honour of The Queen’s leadership of the Nation, which will benefit future generations.

New Artificial Turf at Creasey Park Dunstable’s Creasey Park Community Football Centre has a new full size-artificial turf pitch (ATP) and it is ready to welcome teams old and new. The new ATP has primarily been built for activities such as football and hockey and is fully FIFA (Federation of International Football Association) and FIH (International Hockey Federation) accredited. The new pitch was possible, thanks to £1.1 million of funding from the Housing Infrastructure Fund (HIF) in partnership with Dunstable Town Council. There is a licensed clubhouse, another full-size ATP, a stadium grass pitch and seven youth to adult grass pitches, as well as a state-of-the-art irrigation system, including automated and pop-up sprinklers.

As well as inviting the planting of new trees, The Queen’s Green Canopy will dedicate a network of 70 Ancient Woodlands across the United Kingdom and identify 70 Ancient Trees to celebrate Her Majesty’s 70 years of service.

The best time to plant trees is from October to March. Planting within the official planting season will optimise the chance of trees flourishing. To find out more, visit: https://queensgreencanopy.org/ To advertise call 07941 661004

Looking for a new challenge? Then Redbourn Girlguiding needs YOU! Were you a Rainbow, Brownie, Guide, Ranger, a former Leader or are you new to Girlguiding? Do you have some extra time on your hands? Do you wish to gain new skills and valuable experience? The Rainbow, Brownie, Guide and Ranger Units in Redbourn will not be able to run each week if we do not find new Leaders and Unit Helpers to join our teams. Each unit has an experienced Leader but due to the increasing number of girls who wish to join Redbourn Girlguiding we need more Leaders and Unit helpers to join in and make the fun happen, particularly for Guides. We are looking for people who want to help run the meetings and both Leaders and Unit Helpers are equally valuable members of the Unit and District teams. To qualify as a Leader, you would be provided with training, a mentor and full support from other leaders in the Redbourn District and Harpenden Division. Leaders would be expected to do some preparation for the meetings and unit administration. The Unit Helpers main role is to attend the term time weekly meetings. If you are interested, please contact Michelle at FirstRedbournGuides@gmail.com for an initial chat to find out more. Rainbows is for girls aged 5 and 6, Brownies for girls aged 7 to 10, Guides for girls aged 10 to 14 and Rangers for girls aged 14 to 18 years. More information: www.girlguiding.org.uk

What are Grandparents Rights? The role of a grandparent in a child’s life is unique to every family situation but many grandparents play a significant role in a child’s upbringing. Yet these relationships are often overlooked or marginalised following a breakdown of the relationship between the parents of the child. The parents can be caught in their own conflict and forget to consider the impact on the child of losing a relationship with their extended family. Restrictions on a child’s time with their grandparents does not always follow a relationship breakdown. It may be that a difference of opinion between the parent(s) and grandparent, especially on matters relating to the child, causes problems in maintaining the grandparent/grandchild relationship.

mediator, collaborative lawyer or even social worker to navigate the issues and disputes and aid in reaching a resolution.

Do grandparents have rights? Grandparents have no automatic right to see their grandchildren in England and Wales and this can lead to the parent(s) withholding contact. Efforts to change this position and introduce a presumption that grandparents should be involved in a child’s life continue and Machins can keep you updated on developments as and when they happen.

If permission is granted by the court, substantive court proceedings will follow to decide whether the child should have contact with the grandparent applying. As mentioned above, there is no presumption that children should have contact with their extended family and the burden is on the grandparent to show contact is in the child’s best interest. Machins expert Family Law team can help navigate this difficult process and demonstrate the child’s life will benefit from a relationship with their grandparent.

What steps can be taken? Those with parental responsible for a child, typically the parents, can decide who their child spends time with and when. At Machins we encourage alternatives to court proceedings as a means to resolve these disputes while helping to repair and maintain relationships. Discussions with the child’s parents are the first step and these discussions can involve a Family Law To advertise call 07941 661004

Applying to the court In the event non-court resolutions prove unsuccessful, grandparents do not have an automatic right to apply to the Family Court for contact with their grandchildren and must first ask the court’s permission to make the necessary application. There are exceptions to this requirement to ask the court’s permission to apply which largely require the child to have lived with the grandparent. If you believe these exceptions may apply to you, please contact Machins to discuss further.

Please contact us if you would like more information about the issues raised in this article of any aspect of family law. www.machins.co.uk Luton - 01582 514000 Berkhamsted - 01442 872311 Please mention

What are digital assets? We live in a digitalised society with most of us owning laptops, notebooks and smart phones which give us access to third party digital platforms and applications such as Dropbox, Facebook, Google, Netflix, Amazon and Apple to name a few. These platforms store our personalised collections of digital products such as music, photos, movies, games and books. Most of these types of digital assets may be considered to have more sentimental than monetary value in some cases. However, the ever growing use and value of cryptocurrencies; such as Bitcoin and Ethereum which are stored within virtual decentralised encrypted computer platforms, highlight the need for individuals to ensure that their digital assets are included as part of their estate assets. Transferring digital assets on death It is important to make any specific gifts of digital assets in your Will. This is particularly relevant for assets of monetary value such as cryptocurrencies. The ownership of digital assets is primarily governed by the online asset holder’s terms and conditions. Therefore, it may be difficult for an individual’s personal representatives to enforce proprietary rights on death. For example, the licence to use online music, books and games often terminates on death. So, a person’s account dies with them. The personal representatives are then left with limited options such as memorialisation or account closer. A county court order many be required to gain access to information stored within the virtual (cloud) storage. This could mean that even after obtaining a court order, personal representatives may not have access to photos, videos and personal data not stored on a virtual hard drive, as these may not fall within the remit of the digital asset holder.

specified individuals in accordance with your wishes. Similarly, if a county court order is required in order to release digital assets this is something your solicitor can assist with. Create an inventory of digital accounts It is important to keep a log of passwords and usernames as these are required in order to access digital assets. It may also be useful to set up a password manager account and provide this information to your Digital Asset Executor to be stored with your Will and accessed only at your request or on death. Share certain digital assets during your lifetime It may be particularly useful to share digital assets of sentimental value during your life time. One can send photos, videos and voice messages to loved ones or save these on external hardware such as USB sticks for easier access to this information on death.

For more information regarding your digital assets and Will, please contact Nicole Marmor on nicole. marmor@sherrards.com or call 01727 832830. Nicole acts for many high net worth individuals and her work includes advising on inheritance tax and estate planning via wills and trusts; the administration of estates, often with an international element; Court of Protection matters, including deputyships, lasting powers of attorney and enduring powers of attorney; elderly client matters; and declarations of trust. She is a fluent German and French speaker and heads the firm’s German Group – something that is valued by her international clients. Nicole is a member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP) and The Private Client Section of the Law Society.

Organising your digital assets There are ways of organising your digital assets and providing access on death to ensure that they are distributed according to your wishes. 1. WATFORD FC MATCHDAY PIE LAUNCHED IN COLLABORATION WITH TRING BREWERY Tring Brewery showcases an exclusive matchday pie prepared by Willy’s Pies and served at Watford FC’s Vicarage Road stadium. ‘Beef Brisket & Tring Ale Pie’ will be sold throughout the home-end of the hornet’s stadium and has been made using premium brisket chunks, delicious flaky pastry and Tring Brewery’s ‘Death or Glory’ barleywine. Willy’s Pies were launched in the height of lockdown 2020 and rose to recognition through a frontpage on TimeOut magazine and countless appearances at street food markets in London and the home-counties. Will has used his expertise (honed at St. John and Rochelle Canteen) to give a modern street-food twist to the classic steak and ale pie! Along with their own tasty ingredients, Tring Brewery have provided a hearty glug of ‘Death or Glory’ to enrich the pie’s luscious gravy. ‘Death or Glory’ is barleywine, meaning it has been brewed to a robust strength (7.2%) and features malty flavours such as sweet treacle and molasses. The beer itself is Tring Brewery’s most award-winning ale, claiming Bronze Champion Beer of Britain (2016), amongst many other industry accolades along the way. Jared Ward, communications and PR at Tring Brewery commented: “It’s fabulous to be part of the club’s food and drink offering, especially as the meal of pie enjoys a cult following throughout British football grounds.” Rising to popularity as a functional handheld meal (with a hearty filling protected from the outside world), pies were a staple in working-class diets at a time when the terraces of football ground were full to burst in 19th century Britain. Soon becoming the unofficial meal of matchday, ‘Football Pies’ now enjoy their own dedicated category at the prestigious British Pie Awards, held each year in Melton Mowbray. “We’d love to challenge for the title” commented Will from Willy’s Pies. “The brisket and ale tastes great and has been well received as an exclusive offering fans of the mighty hornets.” The pies are sold throughout the home stands of the Vic for £4.95 and can be paired perfectly with a pint of local beer from Tring Brewery’s real ale bar in the Upper Graham Taylor Concourse. Cheers to supporting local!

Luton Hoo Farm looks to be ‘greener’ and replace fossil-fuel based fertilisers ‘“Luton Hoo Farm is the heart of the Estate and has been managed in house for over 100 years. The farm practice involves Conservation Farming, which incorporates a long-term holistic approach to farming. This utilises conservation principals in the crop production to improve return whilst enhancing and safeguarding the environment for the future. Currently the farm grows oilseed rape for oil production, winter and spring barley for feed and malting, and winter wheat for bread making.’ says Estate Director, Edward Phillips. ‘We are incredibly excited to be partnered with Cranfield University in their collaboration with CCm Technologies, and Rothamsted Research, in trials to find an alternative to fossil-fuel based fertilisers . Trials are taking place in a corner of Luton Hoo Estate’s beautiful Capability Brown designed Bedfordshire countryside. We are at the beginning of a longterm partnership where novel fertilisers will be assessed for their ability to meet the nutrient demand of winter wheat and winter barley in a fully randomised and replicated crop trial’. The Chiltern Society and Chilterns Conservation Board receive grant of £294,000 from the government’s Green Recovery Challenge Fund The grant will fund a suite of schemes developed by the Chilterns Chalk Streams Project (CCSP) focussing on chalk streams and wetland habitats across the Chilterns' Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The work will combine restoration and enhancement with education and engagement projects. The Chilterns' Conservation Board and the Chiltern Society will be working together to deliver this exciting project.

streams are threatened, suffering from the impacts of pollution, high water use, urban development invasive species and climate change. The public is largely unaware of their significance and the value they have in contributing to the health of local people and to the Chilterns’ natural environment.

The grant will lead to the creation of two jobs with the Chiltern Society, and increases the capacity and resilience of other NGOs and voluntary groups, including Revive the Wye, Benson Environment Group and Chiltern Rangers CIC. They aim to secure a healthy future for chalk streams and for the people, communities and businesses of both the Chilterns AONB, and nearby urban areas.

In the first phase of the Green Recovery Challenge Fund, the Government announced grants between £62,000 and £3.8 million, to help create and retain thousands of green jobs. The projects, spread across England, will see trees planted and protected landscapes and damaged habitats such as moorlands, wetlands and forests restored, alongside wider conservation work. The projects will also support environmental education and connecting people with green spaces.

The Chilterns’ chalk streams are a globally rare. They are a threatened habitat which form a critical component of our natural capital: they support a wide diversity of plants and animals, boast a rich, cultural heritage, provide opportunities for recreation and relaxation as well as providing fresh water to local communities. Yet our chalk

Environment Minister Rebecca Pow said: “I encourage environmental organisations to keep abreast of updates around the fund so we can work together to address the twin challenges of biodiversity loss and climate change to create and retain jobs, helping the conservation sector to contribute to our green recovery.”

Safe MOToring

By Melanie Wooding Jones - Redbourn Auto Solutions, caring for you and your car

We all want to be motoring safely to minimise risk to our friends, family and anyone who may be travelling with, or near, us. The annual MOT test was set up to keep us safe on the road, but does it achieve its original aim and are we confident we are driving safe cars because of it?... and if it’s so important, why are there shortages in slots to book? Why do MOT tests exist? The MOT has undertaken many improvements since it was founded in 1960. The prosperity of the post-war economic boom of the 1950s meant that more people could afford to drive and there was a healthy used vehicle market. However, this new automotive freedom was unregulated and, with no mandate for servicing, there was a number of vehicles on the road in a dangerous condition. As a result, the Ministry of Transport (MOT) test was introduced as part of the 1960 Road Traffic Act. The test was compulsory for all vehicles over 10 years old, reducing to 3 years old in 1967, due to the number of failures. Testing was expanded in 1977, and as technology continued to develop the MOT test continued to advance also. More changes took place in 1996 due to the EU Council Directive (ensuring there was a universal standard for periodic safety To advertise call 07941 661004

and emissions across all EU member states) and again in 2012 with EU Harmonisation changes (standardised period of testing and introduced electronic systems). Mileage history was also introduced to help prevent vehicle crime. 2018 saw the biggest shake up in its 60-year history with the arrival of new defect categories and much tougher safety and emission testing. The UK’s roads are among the safest in Europe and much of that is due to the high standards required for the MOT test (which continues to raise standards). A 2008 Department of Transport report estimated that even with the MOT in place, unroadworthy vehicles accounted for 10% of all UK road accidents. What is the difference between an MOT and a service? Many confuse the two, but both are crucial in keeping you and those around you safe, legally compliant and ensure you don’t invalidate your insurance. Unless your car has an exemption, all vehicles are required to undergo an MOT test annually from the 3rd anniversary of its registration, but beware you don’t automatically get reminded! An MOT is a visual safety check and is a legal requirement to certify the vehicle as (continued on page 31) Please mention

roadworthy on the date of inspection. An MOT tester is not allowed to strip down or dismantle parts for an in-depth check, and they shouldn’t need to as the vehicle should sail through its MOT without any additional work being required if it is regularly serviced. The inspection criteria are the same for all vehicles and is set by a government agency. All MOT testers are licensed and tested regularly on their ability to accurately conduct the test. The Government recommendation is £54.85 for an MOT on an average car. If a garage is charging you substantially less, they won’t be making any money on your MOT…. Be cautious of unnecessary upsell! An annual service follows detailed manufacturer guidelines to keep your car in a safe and peak condition. This is an essential part of car maintenance as components maybe starting to weaken mechanically, the oil may need changing, or the air filter, fuel filter, spark plugs may have to be replaced helping the vehicle run smoothly. It also makes the car more environmentally friendly and economical to run, keeps running costs down, increases its lifespan and, importantly, keeps the car roadworthy. If a car’s servicing schedule is maintained, it should be relatively painless with any niggles being addressed before they become an issue and threaten the longterm health of your car. If your car has not been serviced for years, however, the safe and healthy running of your car may be compromised. So, don’t be tempted to miss or delay a service to save money - it could cost you in the long run. A poorly maintained car can result in poor fuel economy in the short term and in big repair bills further down the road. It is hard to compare prices for servicing as it is run differently at every garage according To advertise call 07941 661004

to the quality of the parts used, level of expertise, technical equipment used, and what they consider to be an intermediate, main or full service, etc. If the garage uses servicing based on guidelines from car manufacturer, it will also vary from car to car and year to year! Unlike MOTs, this is an unregulated area of the motor trade, so unbelievably anyone can set up as a ‘mechanic’ and work on cars! The key here is to ensure that you look for quality marks which ensure those working on your car are qualified to do so. What are the penalties? You cannot drive or park your vehicle on the road if the MOT has expired. The only exceptions are driving it to or from somewhere to be repaired, or to a prearranged MOT test. You can be fined up to £1,000 for driving without an MOT, and your insurance is automatically invalid which attracts a fixed penalty of £300! But the penalties are not just related to having a valid MOT…. The government website warns: ‘You’re responsible for making sure your vehicle is ALWAYS SAFE TO DRIVE (‘roadworthy’). It can be unsafe even if you have a current MOT certificate’. A vehicle may be classed as being unroadworthy if it is in such a condition that its use on the road would endanger the driver, passengers, other road users or pedestrians. If you drive a car with dangerous faults or that is unroadworthy, you can be fined £2,500, be banned from driving and get 3 points on your licence. If you are involved in an accident and your car is deemed as unroadworthy, your insurance won’t cover you! If you haven’t had a service recently, how do you know, Please mention

32 or prove, your car is deemed roadworthy? Don’t leave it to chance. When you get your car serviced, make sure you leave with a detailed invoice. You never know when you’ll need it! So, now we’re £5,800 worse off in penalty charges, banned from driving, have 3 points on our licence, and possibly without funds to get repairs done. That’s without considering any 3rd party repairs or claims. If you drive a car that is not roadworthy, the results can be catastrophic, so the penalties are necessarily high. According to NSC, in May 2021 motor vehicle accidents reached 4,050 deaths…. If you could prevent just 10% of these, wouldn’t you? Where do I go to get a test done? You must use an approved MOT test centre to get your MOT. Only centres using the blue sign with 3 white triangles can carry out your MOT. Then it’s a case of taking it somewhere you trust. Impact of COVID on MOT testing As part of the pandemic, vehicle drivers were offered a 6-month MOT deferral from 30th March to 1st August. This caused an unnatural surge in requirements for MOT testing between August-February, as the majority of drivers chose to defer their MOT. It is likely the impact of this will be seen for the next few years and the government are actively encouraging consumers to consider having their MOT test conducted early. In recognition that this may well not appeal to the majority of drivers, our advice is to book early to avoid disappointment as there is

To advertise call 07941 661004

Redbourn Autos.indd 32

bound to be a strain on the limited number of slots available. Although you don’t have to wait until the MOT is due, you are able to retain the same renewable date if you get an MOT a month (minus a day) before it runs out. Effectively this gives you a 13-month MOT! The introduction of the annual MOT was a great start to ensuring we are all kept safe either as driver, passenger or pedestrian, but should it go further? If 10% of all current road accidents are down to unroadworthy cars, then we could have saved 405 lives in May 2021, shouldn’t the regulations be stronger? How long before it becomes mandatory to have your car serviced by a licensed technician rather than left for drivers to determine subjectively the condition of their car? If you haven’t visited your garage within the last 12 months for a service, perhaps consider booking one today. It’s far cheaper than the penalties for getting it wrong! Over the next 6 months pressures on the motor industry to complete an extraordinary number of MOT’s will be tough. Therefore, we have expanded to incorporate our own MOT facility. If you’re looking to book a slot or to incorporate this with your next service, give us a call and we’ll be pleased to book a timed slot for you. Same friendly team, located in Redbourn Industrial Estate, helping you with the convenience of conducting MOTs and correcting any faults the same day. Happy motoring…

Tips from

We throw away £12.5 billion of food a year in the UK! • •

• •

Did you know that approximately 70% of the UK’s food waste comes from homes, not restaurants or supermarkets? Did you also know that by reducing your food waste, you could earn some big savings on your weekly shop?

All it takes is a few small changes: 1. Track your food Keep tabs on what you have in your fridge and cupboard before heading to the shops. 2. Keep rotating Many of us are guilty of buying food, putting it in the back of the cupboard/fridge and forgetting about it until there is a funny smell. 3. Don’t always buy in bulk Bulk deals may seem like a good idea at the time (and they can be for non-perishable items), but they can lead to a lot of unnecessary waste.

• •

Householders are throwing out on average £540 a year. This increases to £700 a year for families with children – or £60 every month! Research suggests 40% of food thrown away could have been eaten is fresh fruit and vegetables. Meat, fish, bread and other bakery products, dairy produce, rice and pasta are all in the ‘top 5’ most wasted foods. Most food we throw away ends up in landfill sites where, rather than harmlessly decomposing as many people think it rots and actually releases methane, a powerful greenhouse gas. If we stopped wasting food, it would have the same impact on carbon emissions as taking 1 in 4 cars off UK roads. What can I do? Check out the The Love Food Hate Waste website: https://lovefoodhatewaste.com/ Composting Some food waste is inevitable. Eggshells, banana skins and tea bags are never going to be on the menu. Home composting is a great way to stop this sort of waste ending up in landfill, and our gardens will really thank us for it.

Appeals Herts CC Could you be a foster parent? Who can foster? Foster carers come from a variety of backgrounds and have different life experiences, skills and qualities to meet the diverse needs of children in care. To be a foster carer you can: Have your own children or have no previous parenting experience and continue to work (depending on the type of fostering you want to do and the needs of the children). You can apply to foster whatever your cultural, ethnic, religious background or sexuality. However, you need to demonstrate that you could support a child from a different background to yours, be any age over 21 years and be in good general health. What do foster carers need? We are looking for people who: • want to make a positive difference to a child’s life and help them feel safe. You need to be patient, committed, empathetic and understanding; have at least one spare room at home; can provide a settled and stable environment for a child; have time, availability and practical means to support a child, such as taking them to school, contact and activities; can attend training; have some relevant experience through previous employment, voluntary work or personal experience; can work with professionals; are full time residents in the UK or have leave to remain.

Priority groups We are particularly keen to hear from people who are able to care for children within at least one of our priority groups, as these are the children and young people we urgently need to find homes for. Our priority groups include: • sibling groups of children of all ages • children over the age of 10 years and teenagers • children with disabilities • children with complex health and emotional needs • children needing permanent or long term placements. People often assume they are not eligible to become a foster carer if they are LGBTQ+. This is not true. As long as you care about children and are willing to learn, you can become a foster carer. https://www.hertfordshire.gov.uk/services/ childrens-social-care/fostering

‘It’s not what you earn, it’s what you keep’

THE POTENTIAL IMPACT TO YOUR EXPECTED RETIREMENT INCOME OVER TIME When you’re planning your retirement income, there are multiple factors to consider: how much you can expect from the State Pension, the value of the pensions you have accumulated in your working life, your projected outgoings and your potential later life expenses. One more factor not to overlook is how much of your retirement income you could lose in taxes. The amount you pay to HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) may be more than you expect, leaving you with less to cover your regular expenditure. New data highlights that retired households lose nearly 14% of their income a year to direct taxes. Income tax and council tax take 13.9% off the average retired household’s pre-tax income of £31,674. Retirees are also impacted by around £4,078 a year in direct taxes[1]. TAXES PAYABLE IN RETIREMENT Once you retire, you’ll no longer need to pay certain taxes, such as National Insurance. But other taxes are still applicable, including Income Tax. You’ll pay Income Tax on any taxable income you receive above your personal allowance (currently £12,570, tax year 2021/22). Taxable income includes your State Pension (currently up to £9,339 if State Pension age is after 5 April 2016), income withdrawn from your workplace or personal pensions, and income from other sources, such as part-time work or rental To advertise call 07941 661004

income from buy-to-let properties. There are also other taxes you might not have factored into your budget, such as Council Tax. DIFFERENT SOURCES OF INCOME If you have different sources of income, you may end up with several tax codes, which tell your employer or pension provider how much tax to deduct. Don’t assume these are correct – HMRC does make mistakes. You should receive coding notices with details of your tax codes before the start of the tax year. It’s a good idea to check these are right and if you think there’s a mistake, or if you’re not sure, contact HMRC. The first time you take a lump sum (apart from the tax-free lump sum) from a defined contribution pension scheme, it’s likely you’ll be charged too much tax. This is because most initial lump sum payments are taxed using an emergency tax code. This means you’re taxed as if you made the same lump sum withdrawal every month of the tax year. You can claim back overpaid tax. TAX ON YOUR SAVINGS The way your savings are taxed doesn’t change when you retire or reach State Pension age. Banks and building societies now pay savings interest without any tax taken off but, depending on your situation, you may still have to pay tax on some of your savings income. An effective tax plan is a crucial part of planning for retirement and can help you make the most of your financial resources. It’s always important to consider the amount of after-tax Please mention

income you’ll earn. Remember: ‘It’s not what you earn, it’s what you keep.’

INCREASING YOUR RETIREMENT INCOME Before you retire, there are various ways to boost your retirement income in the future. You may be able to increase the State Pension you’re entitled to claim by filling any gaps in your National Insurance contributions record. If you haven’t taken advantage of them, you may have tax-efficient savings options, such as Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs). Within an ISA you pay no UK tax on income or capital gains. Paying less tax could mean higher returns for you (and less work if you need to complete a tax return). And you can also plan the most tax-efficient way to access your pension from age 55 (57 from 2028 unless your plan has a protected pension age). Taking money from your pension plan is a big decision, and when and how you do it can have significant impact on how long your savings will last. So, when the time comes, it’s important you feel confident you understand your options and how your decisions might affect the tax you pay and how long your money will last.

Sudoku

To pay tribute to the death of Japanese Maki Kaji at the age of 69, known as the ‘Godfather’ of Sudoku, this page is dedicated to all fans of the numbers puzzle. Here we have four puzzles from very easy, easy, medium and hard. Everyone can have a go at this adictive game so get to it. How did the name come about? In 1984, Maki wanted to go horse racing, so he created the name in about 25 seconds. He put together the letters Su, meaning numbers, and Doku, meaning unmarried.

Some quotes from our current team Dave: “Whilst volunteering I have learnt new practical skills and get satisfaction from being part of a team and project” Judy: “I have been a volunteer since the start of the project and enjoy the ambience, beautiful scenery and watching the project develop” We hope to have an Autumn Open Day with children’s events in the October half term – please check the website for confirmation. www.lutonhooestate.co.uk/walled-garden Next year is the 21st anniversary of the beginning of the project and there is already a fascinating timeline in a display in the vinery.
