Mimagazine talks to Emily Fripp, local portrait ar st and caricaturist What is a caricature? A caricature is basically an exaggera on. It isn’t a cartoon, but an exaggerated representa on of the person’s features. Their personality can also contribute to the way a caricature looks. Well known caricatures include the Spi ng Image puppets by Fluck and Law. My own caricatures are rather different; people who commission a caricature do not want to feel ridiculed! Mine are kinder.

series of 30 music icons. As far as celebri es go, quite a few have some of my work: Mel and Sue; the AbFab cast; Farscape cast and creators; OITNB and Prisoner cast. I have corresponded with the director Peter Jackson; the Soska Sisters and the producers of Jonathan Strange a er sending them some of my work.

What made you choose this as a profession?

What is the funniest caricature you have produced?

Art is something that I not only enjoy, but am skilled at. I have been drawing for as long as I can recall, star ng with drawing the Pink Panther is many guises when I was five or sixyearsold. I love it. I draw almost every day and I am happiest when I am alone at my desk, radio on, immersed in the art.

That is a tricky one as humour is also very subjec ve. I produced a series of cartoons of the Farscape cast as musicians… but in terms of caricatures? My personal favourites are Lemmy; Mulder and Scully and the cast of Breaking Bad.

Where did you study? I am pre y much selftaught. Aside from doing an A Level at St Albans City Campus, I have not gone on to study art. I learn from looking at art – from the old masters to contemporary ar sts. I look at their use of colour; the effects achieved by handling the brushes in different ways, and I adapt those things into my own work.

How long have you been doing this? For ever would be the short answer. I remember when I was about sixyearsold, no cing that people’s ears are not flat to the head – to me, they looked like they were a ached by a stalk! All of my early li le figura ve drawings looked as though they had wellington boots a ached to their heads!

What is unique about your business? Every ar st is different, and art is very subjec ve. I am fortunate however, to be able to work in pen, pencils, paint and marker pen. I am able to do portraiture as well as caricature and even the occasional landscape. My forte is faces, however, and I love pain ng famous people. My portraits are vibrant in colour, but dark in tone. I prefer a moody face as opposed to a smiling face.

How long do they take to produce? That all depends on the style (whether it is a caricature or a portrait) and the subject. Some caricatures require a li le research if it involves a specific vehicle or landmark, and that can add me. Generally, a caricature should be finished well within a week, and a portrait in maybe a fortnight.

Have you ever produced a caricature of anyone famous? Certainly. I adore famous faces and have just finished a

T

aking a family drive around the countryside, we unexpectedly found ourselves going past the Gaddesden Row Village Party. It looked so invi ng that we parked the car and my husband, step daughter, granddaughter and myself, got out and joined the proceedings. The High Street Jazz Group provided some good live music, local ladies sold some delicious homemade cakes and I was lucky enough to win a bo le of rosé wine in the Tombola. Old me games like ‘smash the coconut’ were being played by the children and everyone was having a lovely me. It was a day for dodging the showers and my husband did get drenched when a tent he was standing under, suddenly dumped its water load! It was a perfect example of quintessen ally Bri sh Village Life. Long may it con nue.

A Perfect Day for a Picnic at Caddington PreSchool Photos and words by Janet Brown

C

addington Preschool held a lunch with a difference on Friday 8th July. All children were invited to stay for a picnic lunch along with their mums and dads. The weather was just right and the children quickly tucked into included sandwiches, crisps and chunks of cheese. Niki Summers runs the friendly preschool for children aged from two to five years and some of the supporters and helpers are parents themselves. Having been in the village for over 20 years, they are now having to vacate the premises this term, as the Heathfield Centre is closing. They will be reloca ng into the infant and junior school from September. To find out more about the preschool or to help with any events email niki.caddingtonmanager@gmail.com

Thought for today This is the first in a series of thought provoking subjects considered from the point of view of Markyate resident, Phancurio. For this issue he considers the meaning of the St. George’s Cross flag, shown in a wood carving on the pulpit of St. John the Bap st Church in Markyate. It is immediately clear that this depic on of the St. George’s Cross flag does not belong to the murky world of football inspired chauvinism. This is older. In fact, this is a wood carving on the pulpit of one of the Anglican village churches in the region. Shown is the Agnus Dei, the Lamb of God – Christ in other words; Jesus Christ holding the flag. That could be understood quite innocently as the local appropria on of God’s universal salva on. There is nothing illegi mate about this, and today, world Chris anity is in agreement that the faith needs to be rooted in the soil of the local tradi on. Christ comes now in many colours, white among them. And yet I am irritated by this wood carving, probably because the recent resurgence of li le Englander na onalism has appropriated the St. George flag as its core symbol. Christ does come in many colours and he speaks in many languages, but na onalism is not on offer. People enter heaven, not na ons. Not all countries and not all Chris an denomina ons allow na onal flags inside the church. It would not be the first me in history that tradi ons of the Church have become secularized and to take on a life of their own outside the Church. That being said, I am s ll irritated. The misunderstanding may be older. What was the meaning of Saint George when, one or two centuries ago, a wood carver felt the need to make sure that God embraced this flag? Had the cultural values of modern na onalism, with its pretence of superiority, crept into the inner sanctum of the faith? Had God

demonstrably become an Englishman and had the no on of the Chosen People unwi ngly been transferred to the English? These are, and always have been, worrying ques ons. Eleva ng the na onal self to the divine sphere is not patrio sm (“the last refuge of a scoundrel” as Dr. Johnson put it), it is extreme form na onalism complete with all the dangers this can bring. The devolu on of Scotland and Wales and the Brexit vote have now combined to put the ma er of English iden ty into par cularly sharp relief. Reconstruc ng it is a necessity. But would it not be awfully nice if our a empts at reconfiguring our iden ty avoided pseudoreligious rhetoric and le the St. George’s Cross flag safely where it belongs in the Church?

t was a funfilled, happy day at Slip End’s Village Day. There were some interes ng stands with a choice of mouthwatering foods on sale. “Where does the money go?” I asked Jill Acton commi ee member, “The money is deposited in the Community Projects Group account. This group does what the name suggests by providing money to help fund small improvements for Slip End and gives grants to local groups and clubs like the Brownies, the Friendship Group and the Village Hall to name a few. The commi ee which organized Village Day have plans to

spend some of the money to fund a float with Father Christmas for the parish. How to use the rest of the money will be decided when we meet up with the CPG commi ee; we have a couple of ideas but we need to run it past their commi ee as well,” said Jill. The day made a profit of just over £3,000 which was well over what had been an cipated.

Emily explains: “I was 3 years old when I ďŹ rst met Alex and his li le sister, Sophie. They lived next door and from the day we moved in, I would wait by the fence to see them. I may have been an only child, but in my eyes I had gained the coolest big brother and sister. “We became even closer as we grew up together but in 2013, my big brother and his beau ful family were told the heartbreaking news: Alex had cancer the extent unknown. The big brother I grew up with con nued to live every day to its full poten al. He accepted all oers of treatment, including radiotherapy and chemotherapy, and ba led the disease for two years before the doctors said there was nothing more that could be done. “This is where the angels in disguise appeared, sent by Rennie Grove Hospice Care. Alex wanted to spend his ďŹ nal weeks and moments at home, surrounded by his incredible parents and inspira onal sister. Due to his deteriora ng health, he needed specialist hospice care and onhand medical help to keep him comfortable. Alex spent his last days, at home, with his closest friends and family, listening to memories, making future plans for his loved ones, arranging his ďŹ nal goodbyes. “A er Alex died last year, on 28 September, I was inspired by the support, treatment and care that Rennie Grove made available to my hero and his sidekicks through the toughest and most tes ng mes any human being can be put through. So I ran the Herts 10K in his memory, the day before we said our ďŹ nal goodbyes at his funeral.â€?

A Stunning Produc on from The Magna Graecia Flute Choir Words and photos by Janet Brown 30th July at St. Mary the Virgin, Kensworth

T

he Flute Choir gave a magical performance to a packed audience in this beau ful church which was originally built in the 12th century, with the tower and the east end of the chancel being added in the 15th century. The Choir was founded in 2009 and previously visited Kensworth in 2011. The members are diploma students, young professionals and music teachers from Calabria in Italy. Playing a mixture of piccolo flute, alto flute and bass flute, the 12 members of the Choir and Musical Director were complemented by the splendid voices of a soprano, alto and tenor.

Choir

David Manton, Chairman of the Friends of St. Mary commented, ‘The evening raised a profit in excess of £1,300, including an extremely generous re ring collec on of £425, some of which has been donated to the Choir. This will assist them with the purchase of a new bass flute which will cost approx. 10,000 Euros’. The event was largely organised by Margaret Pu erill and her daughter Helen, who in addi on to singing, also took on the role of presenter for the evening. Helen, who has lived in Italy for the last 30 years said, ‘It was a remarkable evening and so wonderful to see so many familiar faces in the audience.’

Kensworth School Fête Report and photos by Janet Brown

Keep calm and carry on… At the start of the fête the covers were on but it didn’t dampen the spirits of staff, teachers, governors and parents were prepared for just such an occurrence and had planned accordingly. Despite the early rain, the sun came out making the a ernoon an enjoyable event.

Adults and children alike were fascinated by the Police dog handler who gave us a display his dog was so obedient! They raised the impressive sum of £1,457 which is a laudable achievement for a small school with 75 pupils plus 20 in the Pre School.

Pimms and barbecue were on sale, offering the best of summer refreshments. The stalls included, an array of plants and vegetables to buy, a rehoming the dog stand and Red Watch who came with their fire engine. They even helped out with the Tug of War which was great fun. Anyone for a ta oo?

PARTY IN THE WOOD Photos Bill Bowman. Words Belinda Neasham.

Residents get into the Street Party spirit

T

he residents of Oldhill Wood and Byslips Road in Studham celebrated Her Majesty The Queen's 90th birthday in style by holding our very first street party. Some residents have lived in "The Wood" for 4050 years but did not know many of their neighbours. The newest residents came up with the idea of having an "old style" street party to get the community together. The idea was very well received and we soon formed a planning team. Trestle tables were provided by the Scouts and marquee tents were provided by the church. The sun shone on the day and the turnout was amazing with over 100 people a ending. Many of us decorated our homes with bun ng and brought pla ers of food and drinks. Others provided music, organised games and ac vi es, including badge making, crown making, a three legged race, a treasure hunt, royal quiz, pin the tail on the corgi, and lots more. We even had a collec on of vintage tractors on display in the road for the children to sit on.

The Reverend Nicola Lenthal who led “God Save The Queen” followed by a blessing and the cu ng of the cake.

We invited our local MP Andrew Selous and our lovely vicar, the Reverend Nicola Lenthall and both were delighted to come to enjoy the day with us. Nicola give a blessing to Her Majesty and to our community and then cut the amazing celebra on cake and toasted The Queen. We all agreed that we want to do it again; a er all, it's The Queen and Prince Philip's 70th wedding anniversary next year! Con nued on page 32...

Flamstead’s Mini Glastonbury Wish Tree Charity Live music with a circus theme

25th June 2016 Report and photos by Sue Mitchell

I

a ended the last Wish Tree open air music fes val two years ago as a photographer/reporter. I thought it was such a great night out, that I decided I would organise a group of friends to take our own tent and enjoy the fes vi es this year.

The theme was Circus so what would be be er than the hot topic of the day ‘Brexit Circus’? Following the debacle that followed the OUT vote, we thought we would make light of it by turning it into our own circus. With players like Nigel Farage, Boris Johnson, Michael Gove, Jeremy Corbyn and David Cameron, we had a perfect set of clowns! With much Prosecco purchased from the bar, we enjoyed our picnic as the sun went down and listened to live performances from Billie Su on, Threefold and Trio Bexx. The tempo went upbeat and the next live acts to perform moved into the marquee. S kki Beatz got everyone on their feet and the brilliant headline act Flamdaddy, rocked us un l midnight. The evening chill helped to get the dancing started but it wasn’t long before the tent was heaving and revellers spilled out onto the grass to dance under the stars. One of my party described it as, ‘our mini Glastonbury.’

About The Wish Tree Charity The Wish Tree Charity has been in opera on since 2008 and con nues to support residents of Flamstead Parish. This was their 9th fundraiser and 8th Music Fes val. The charity is set up to support residents undergoing personal trauma such as major surgery, bereavement and ill health. It provides prac cal support such as childcare, domes c help, dog walking, horse care, gardening and transport to help the individual or family unit operate as normally as possible. This year, the charity has been able to offer help to over 35 residents and is currently suppor ng eight. Monies are raised through one main fundraiser, The Music Fes val but also through personal dona ons and sponsored events. All monies raised go directly towards helping their target people and all Trustees involved with the charity work purely on a voluntary basis. This year’s Music Fes val raised a fantas c sum of over £6,100 (net profit). Many thanks to all who came to support and to those who volunteered with the organisa on, running and contribu ons to the event. Liz Jebb has now resigned from the charity and Tracy Wells has taken over as chairperson. Alison is the treasurer and Barbara is the secretary. Tell Your Story! You have reached old age, you live in the Markyate and Flamstead area, and when it comes to matters of how to live or not to live our life you do have a couple of stories to tell. Would you like to share these with others? A resident of Markyate, Prof Werner Ustorf, is preparing a book on old age and visibility in the local community. You are warmly invited to participate in this. This would involve, among other things, one or more interviews and some photos being taken. n June of this year, a group of five ladies, from the Spo ed Dog in Flamstead, took part in a sponsored weight loss programme in support of the Mount Vernon Cancer Centre MMVCC) Charitable Find.

Ladies Liz Hizli, Emilie Griffin, Claire Bedwell, Monica Carrera and Pauline Barwell, worked with local Clinical Hypnotherapist and NLP Prac oner, Lilian Whitehead 'The Complete Therapist' using a hypno c weight loss programme, which incorporates the Virtual Gastric Band (VGB). A demonstra on of drive, dedica on and determina on was shown during the programme, and over four weekly sessions, these ladies managed to lose almost three and a half stone between them and raise a fabulous £382 for the MVCC Charitable Fund. Claire, proprietor of the Spo ed Dog said, ‘I lost 1 1⁄2 stones in 4 weeks with the VGB, which was aided by the well prepared and yummy salads at The Spo ed Dog, Flamstead. The Senior players

Andy King Memorial 30th July Markyate Words and photos by Sue Mitchell

A

ndy King, Markyate school boy and professional footballer sadly died of a heart a ack last year, aged just 58. Friends who had grown up with Andy decided to hold a fund raising tributeday in his memory. Crowds gathered from 1.30pm for the children’s football match which was followed by the seniors’ football match at 3pm. The seniors' match included many former players who par cipated alongside current team members. There was a barbeque followed by evening entertainment and a disco to raise money for the Andy King Founda on which is a fund to help under privileged children get football training. Signed shirts from Luton Town, supplied by exmanager Mick Har ord, were also raffled to help raise further funds. As a boy Andy lived on Parkfield in Markyate before travelling around the country playing for many top teams. He was an appren ce at Luton Town and then signed for Everton as a teenager in 1976 and was instantly embraced by Everton fans for his enthusiasm and eye for a goal. He ended his playing career at Aldershot, a er short s nts with Dutch side Cambuur, Swedish side Orebro, Wolves and Luton.

He later worked as a manager at Mansfield, Swindon and Grays Athle c, as a coach at Sunderland and scout for Andy King loved Everton FC Plymouth, Colchester and most recently MK Dons. Andy also did some repor ng for radio and the Liverpool papers. Andy's widow Barbara lives in their home in Sandy, Bedfordshire; she came along to support the proceedings. “Andy never forgot this place,” said his Andy King as a school boy footballer school friend Steve Ward. “He always came back. Markyate Cricket Update From Carl Smith On 21st June Markyate Cricket Club played against Kensworth CC at home. Ba ng first, MCC made 132 for 4 off 20 overs. Dan Mor mer on 47, Maskall 24 with Craig Mor mer 36 not out, which set a healthy total. In reply KCC made 91 all out. The pick of the bowlers were Mark Medlin with three and Lee Carter with a brace. 26th June saw us travel to St. George’s School in Harpenden to play the Carpenter’s Arms. Tom Burton took on the captain’s armband on another sunny day. Losing the toss, MCC bowled first and a series of dropped catches saw the Carpenter’s get off to a flying start; the skipper dropping three balls which should have been catches (the pressure of captaincy perhaps). The two openers both made their 50s which saw them post a total in the end of 206 for 9. The pick of the bowlers was Smith with

3 for 29 and Paul Fli on with 2 for 12. Burton did manage to catch one at the fourth a empt! In reply, MCC got off to a solid start with Dan Mor mer and Dave Maskall ge ng 37 and 36. There was a golden duck for Craig Mor mer who was feeling under the weather. Greensmith soon followed and then it was the turn of the reckless captain. Smith kept things going at the other end but when he fell for 39, all looked lost. Carter went for a duck and the last pair of Fli on (21) and Rory Bu erfield (18), put on a thrilling last wicket stand of 36 which just saw us fall short by 18 runs. Fines were a plenty, especially for the captain Burton, who was the first losing captain of the season. Lessons were learnt which is the main thing.

49

not able to make any telling contribu on. It was however, a good experience for them. Medlin, Carter and Evans all had a good me at the bowling crease, picking up the main wickets between them; Caddington fell quite a few runs short. A Friday 20/20 night game was arranged with Kensworth and the sun was shining. Ba ng first, MCC made 132 off 20 overs. Burton took 40 and Dan Mor mer 67, se ng up a good total. Kensworth made 104 for 6 off their 20 overs. The wickets and bowling was spread around with eight bowlers used, including the Bu erfield twins, Charlie Smith and Sto er with the nonregular bowlers picking up 1 apiece.

3rd July saw Caddington come to Markyate. They were a young side and different from the team we normally play midweek. Ba ng first, MCC made 154 all out off 40 overs. Wally Greensmith graced us with his presence and made a quick fire 30 and re red. Some of our youngsters/ inexperienced players had a chance to bat up the order but they were

Hot Under the Collar?…. By Melanie Wooding Jones – Redbourn Auto Solu ons, Caring for you and your car

T

he great Bri sh summer is here and what be er me to socialise? Many of us enjoy barbeques with family and friends, long walks, or perhaps even a cheeky drink at the local hostelry… And, if you are lucky enough to own a conver ble, the top comes down and it’s me to enjoy driving with the wind blowing through your hair! For those of us who don’t have this op on, it is always a relief to turn on the air condi oning to help us feel a li le more comfortable. As we put more pressure on our air con. it increases the chance of it breaking down. We don’t necessarily no ce if it is not working efficiently, but when it breaks completely we seek the help of an expert. The majority of vehicles are fi ed with air condi oning (or climate control) systems. Like other components in your car, these need regular a en on to ensure they are working efficiently.

Do I have to get my Air Condi oning Serviced? Air condi oning, like the rest of your car, is mechanical and needs looking a er. It is not something that is covered in the regular service, so it can get overlooked.

To adver se call 01582 965760

The majority of manufacturers recommend an Air Con Service every two years as it is important for your health and 10% efficiency is lost every year. In addi on, without a service, you make the system work harder, which will in turn use more fuel! It’s also a safety feature as maintaining a stable body temperature allows you to concentrate be er on the road ahead. The gas inside is clear and odourless and is difficult to detect when it is leaking. There are many things that can cause it to leak. Among these are stones from the road that can break through the condenser, which sits in front of the radiator on most vehicles.

Can I just have a regas/recharge? Yes. It is recommended that you should recharge your air condi oning system every 2 years with gas and lubricant, in order to keep it running efficiently. However, it is a complex system, so o en regassing isn’t the reason it’s failed. Just recharging the system may leave you needing another regas or recharge. As with all things, regular maintenance is cheaper than fixing a repair at a later date. Compare prices before you take the risk. A service is o en a more economical choice.

Where do I go? You have to be licenced to refill air condi oning because it is a gas, so make sure your chosen

55 garage/technician has the licence! There are many reputable garages offering an Air Con. Service which will involve: • A full visual inspec on: temperature and leaks are checked. This will include the recovery of refrigerant, evacua on of air and moisture from the system. • Checking the compression of the gas. This is the first check to ensure you are receiving maximum efficiency. • Running dye through the system, so that iden fying any leaks becomes more obvious. • Changing filters and cleaning pipes to ensure they are not clogged with pollen or bacterial buildup which may create unpleasant odours. • Recharging refrigerant to ensure your engine isn’t under addi onal strain, using more fuel. A system that has not been recharged in two years will drama cally reduce its efficiency. This should be done to manufacturer recommended levels. • The system is regassed and fresh lubricants added. • The system is checked to ensure its efficiency

Beware! Many garages offer this service, but do not have the knowledge or the capability to carry out any repairs. This includes fast fit and mobile style garages.

Is there anything else I can do to ensure my Air Con. is running efficiently? Run your air condi oning at least once a week throughout the year. It is a misconcep on that it is not fuel efficient to do this. It is actually more costly to put it right! It is a li le known fact that although motorists mostly use their Air Con. system more in the summer, it is also important to use it throughout the winter. It creates dry warm air rather than the humid air from outside. It demists your car windscreen quicker!

Chill out this summer and ensure your Air Con is efficient. If in doubt, don’t hesitate to ask your local garage or give us a call. We are always happy to help and advice is free!

anet Crawley of St. Ma hews care home in Redbourn invited me, along with other members of the media, to the final session of the wheelchair dancing, featuring seniors from St. Ma hews Care Home in Redbourn and The Lodge in Hemel Hempstead. This was the last of six sessions and six ladies with their carers enjoyed the dancing. Jade Amis, Engagement and WellBeing Tutor, started the session with warm up exercises before the Warmup rou ne with tutor Jade Amis dancing began. The ladies in the chairs were given a choice of hats to wear and the dancing began. We had a Frank Sinatra favourite, ‘New York, New York’ followed by a popular war me song, ‘Pack up Your Troubles in Your Old Kit Bag and Smile, Smile, Smile’ and then they did some waltzing which was carefully choreographed by Debra Maddex, Special Engagement and Well Being Mentor. Refreshments followed to give everyone energy for the final session, a er which cer ficates were to be awarded. “The wheelchair dancing shows that people with demen a can have fun and enjoy themselves,” said Janet. “From a personal experience, my mother, who died in 2004, suffered from demen a. Watching the wheelchair dancing and how much pleasure it was bringing to the ladies in the chairs, I was touched to see how much the services for sufferers has improved in the past few years.” Wheelchair dancing is part of the SMILE (Support Me In Life Engagement) scheme. SMILE is a project that has been launched by Her ordshire Care Providers Associa on. It provides support to everyone in the health and social care

Looking for Public Speakers? Do you belong to a local club or group? Are you responsible for booking speakers to fill a number of slots throughout the year? Why not arrange for a Rennie Grove Hospice Care Ambassador to visit and talk about the work that Rennie Grove does in your local community? Our Ambassadors are all excellent speakers who give their me on a voluntary basis to help spread the word about the charity. There’s no charge for an Ambassador talk; however, Rennie Grove needs to raise £7.2 million each year to help the thousands of local families who need us so we do ask groups to consider a small dona on to cover travel expenses and contribute towards pa ent care. To find out more about Rennie Grove and to download an Ambassador booking form, visit www.renniegrove.org/support/communitygroups/book anambassadortalk or call 01442 890222. The Hospice of St. Francis T

he Hospice of St. Francis cares for people across Herts and Bucks facing lifelimi ng illness, among them local man Bill Barre , 66, who receives care at home from the Hospice’s community nursing team to help with his chronic lung disease. Despite wearing a breathing tube Bill recently completed the Hospice’s fivemile Midnight Walk, along with his wife Vanessa, to thank the staff for the care they have provided. “My GP recommended that I get help from the Hospice and it’s the best thing I’ve ever done,” said Bill. “I didn’t realise the work the Hospice does un l it affected me and I needed help and I’ve had more help from the Hospice than anyone. They’ve been a godsend and this is just my way of thanking them for looking a er us.”

Support for Carers Anyone affected by a lifelimi ng illness can access the Hospice’s services and there is also a dedicated carers’ support programme running which includes a first aid course and a moving and handling training course during September. To find out more about these and other services available from our Spring Centre visit: www.s rancis.org.uk/springcentre Come to our Gardens! As we enjoy the last days of summer the Hospice will be opening the gates to its seven acres of volunteer kept gardens as part of the NGS Open Gardens Scheme on Sunday 4th September from 2 5pm. Explore the sensory garden, woodland walk or enjoy refreshments on the lawns with their views over to Chilterns. Entrance to the event is £4 (children enter free). Ways to Support us Meanwhile, as summer draws in, we have plenty going on to help the Hospice raise the £4.8m it needs every year to provide its services from our Go Purple event on Friday 7th October to a huge variety of more physical challenges:

Trek China If you’d like to travel further afield, come to an open evening on Monday 12 September and find out more about our wonderful trek to China leaving next autumn. Mud Pack Challenge III Well over a 1,000 local people have par cipated in our Mud Pack Challenge over the last two years! Our Mud Pack Challenge III is be er than ever and gives you the chance to test your stamina by running through various obstacles and lots of mud – all in the beau ful gardens of Ashridge House!

We’re looking for keen swimmers who want to swim the lake and raise what they can for our care with every stroke. Rookie Cooks Challenge Are you a novice in the kitchen? The Rookie Cooks Challenge, star ng on Thursday 29th September, will train eight people how to cook from scratch with the Hospice’s award winning chef Chris Took. The eight week fundraising course will end with a threecourse grand finale dinner on Saturday 20th November to showcase your newly acquired culinary skills.
