Autumn bulb planting

for coolour from March to Nov 3.

This short article will highlight some fantastic bulbs and plants which can be utilised in many different gardens and give huge benefits by way of colour (which attracts pollinators) and longevity (long flowering period). This selection will also work as a stand-alone bed so if you are looking to make some changes to your garden this offers a very simplistic, cost effective, ready-made design.

Bulbs

I am always very reliant on bulbs to fill in gaps when not 1. much is happening in the garden and use different types especially from March through to June. Daffodils – there are so many different varieties and planted in clumps of ten make a real impact and can spread the season �rom March through to April. One of my favourites is the fragrant, multi headed ‘Narcissus Bridal Crown’ (for height) and then Narcissi ‘Rip van Winkle’ (which seems to flower forever) and ‘Bulbocodium Conspicious’ as dwarf varieties (March to April). Tulips – When choosing tulips, I always consider how they will look once the rain has been and gone. Parrot and fringed tulips such as Estella Rijnveld (pic1) always look amazing but one burst of rain is enough to damage their fragile flowers and all that painstaking work planting will be lost in an instant. (April to May). The more sturdy shaped varieties such as ‘Triumph (pic2), Darwin Hybrid, Kauffmania and Purissima tulips always seem to last longer Alliums – Alliums flower between May- June and are pretty balls on single stems of different colours and sizes. Two that work really well together are Mars and Mount Everest (Purple and White) which will reach heights of 1.4m and the BEES LOVE THEM! (pic3)

Trio of colours Hydrangaea Annabelle, Crocosmia Lucifer and Verbena Lollipop This combination start flowering in mid-June and will continue all the way through till late September and all complement each other very well. They cope with all soil types, are pretty drought tolerant and can be used as cut flowers for a vase in the house. Making or signing a Will during the Pandemic There has been a significant increase in the number of people seeking to make a Will or review their Wills during the current crisis as well as executing Powers of Attorney. We understand that this may be a cause of great anxiety especially as we have all received advice from the Government on social distancing and self-isolation which is particularly important for the elderly or ill. Whilst our London and St Albans offices are physically closed, we are all working from home and the Wills and Probate Department is fully up and running. We are able to arrange meetings via various video conferencing facilities including FaceTime, Skype, WhatsApp and Zoom. You can also speak to a member of the team on the telephone as our office numbers have all been diverted to our mobile telephone numbers. Where possible, most correspondence can be done by email. As far as the signing of a Will is concerned, the law states that there needs to be two independent witnesses present when the Testator signs the Will. They must then each sign the Will in the presence of the Testator and one another. This law has been in place since 1837 and is very precise. TRADITIONAL SPENDING AND SAVING HABITS HAVE BEEN TURNED UPSIDE DOWN Household finances, including spending and saving patterns have deteriorated drastically since the coronavirus (COVID-19) lockdown, despite unprecedented Government support. Traditional habits have been turned upside down, and household budgets that guided our incomings and outgoings before the pandemic are no longer valid. Analysis of consumer sentiment alongside official household spending data[1] reveals the inability to save is the biggest current concern for UK adults (26%), as earnings have been disrupted for millions of workers. UK adults also cited economic and stock market volatility reducing the value of their pension or investments to be a key concern (23%), as well as an inability to pay household bills (19%).

NAVIGATING UNFORESEEN CIRCUMSTANCES Many factors will determine how different parts of the UK are faring financially, including how much of the local economy is based on tourism, retail and leisure and how much it relies on public transport. Many households continue to navigate through unforeseen circumstances. Now is the time to keep saving and spending habits under careful and regular review. It is good practice to weigh up what we are spending each month, and how much more or less we are saving. If you feel as if you have more cash to spare at the end of the month during this time, it’s important to consider a good home for it. Maintaining or even increasing pension contributions could be an attractive longer-term option for savers who can afford to do so, so that money you would otherwise have paid in tax on your earnings goes straight into your pension pot via tax relief. Providing you can access other funds at short notice if you need them, then small extra savings today could make a big difference tomorrow.

REDUCED OR ZERO SPENDING This is likely to have been significantly offset by reduced or zero spending on leisure pursuits halted by the lockdown. These include holidays, house moves, eating out, clothing, hairdressers and trips to the cinema, theatre and museums, potentially reducing the typical household’s average weekly spending by 35%. Overall, this creates a net saving of 29%[2]. The data highlights that female savers look to have been disproportionately affected during the lockdown, as workers in sectors such as hospitality and retail are more likely to be younger females[3].

How COVID-19 has changed the motor industry

No-one expected the COVID-19 pandemic, so when it came, it adversely affected a number of industries severely and fast. The motor industry saw a disruption in the supply chain as parts manufacturing ceased and assembly plants closed. In the UK, large car showrooms closed, parts suppliers ran on limited staff, and some repair centres closed as it was not viable for them to remain open. But, where has that left the industry now? NEW CAR SALES New car sales in the UK was hit hard with a 97% downturn on last year’s figures. This may produce some good news for consumers, as manufacturers may offer good deals for new purchases as they try to get the market back on track. USED CAR SALES MotorFinance report that sales exceeded supply by a massive 71%. This equates to a shortage of 100,000 used cars against pre-lockdown levels. There has been a surge for used cars with those aged 6-12 years old up by 10% reinforcing the market’s move to older and cheaper cars. It is also in line with those wishing to move to the safety of cars rather than public transport. This pattern is predicted to continue for at least the rest of 2020. The cars that have seen the highest price increases are sports, luxury and SUV vehicles. One of our customers purchased a SUV when the market was less stable has seen a 25% increase in value in two months! REPAIR It is expected that the aftermarket industry across Europe will shrink around 20 percent. Across the UK, we are currently experiencing an economic downturn as businesses are refocussing and evaluating structures to enable their businesses to survive. street stores and many jobs. The motor industry is no different with many dealerships closing, but it is expected that the garages specialising in performance parts and accessories will see the steepest fall of around 25 percent across Europe However, for those who have been able to adjust to the new norm and become COVID secure, there is predicted a brighter future. As mentioned above, the demand is significant and set to last for at least the next 6 months, so the pressure on repair centres will increase. MOT From 1st August, the 6-month MOT extension will cease. The extensions from March- July will create an unusual level of need from September-January, with many of these likely to need rectification work in already oversubscribed workshops. HOW GARAGES/WORKSHOPS HAVE CHANGED It has been great to see how people are adapting to the ‘new normal’: pubs repurposing to provide take-away drinks or turning into food stalls; factories ‘pivoting’ to make ventilators; church services taking place on-line and Zoom meetings and family get togethers becoming commonplace.
