Welcome to Mimagazine Your local magazine for Redbourn, Kinsbourne Green, Markyate, Flamstead, Caddington, Slip End, Aley Green, Woodside, Kensworth, Whipsnade, Studham, Dagnall, Ringshall and the Gaddesdens.

Dear Readers,

CONTACTS

For those of you who were following Bulbgate, I am pleased to report that the bulbs purchased by Nick Robeson, and paid for by private people & businesses, were eventually planted so we can all look forward to lots of colour in Markyate in the Spring me. So much rubble! Together with my neighbour, Jess Murchie, I planted on the corner of Roman Way where it meets the High Street and what we expected to be a very simple task took us two hours. The amount of bricks and debris under that patch of grass was astonishing. You can see by the photos below, how much we had to digout before plan ng could even begin. But the job was done and so there should be some croci, followed by an abundance of yellow daffodils in the Spring. See more bulb plan ng photos on the News pages.

We have really enjoyed our me here and we will miss the many friends who we have made in this me. The MiMagazine will con nue as Janet Brown, who lives locally, will be handling the daytoday ma ers and repor ng on the local events. I will s ll be involved and will visit the area monthly to enjoy an Indian meal at Markyate Spice, have lunch in the Bell at Studham, enjoy coffee and cakes at Harpers, imbibe in a drink at the Swan and the Plume and to meet our regular customers and friends. As the Brexit debacle rages on for a third year, lets wish that g everything gets sorted in 2019 and our government can get on with the job of running the country. NNeew wss Challenge Match between Redbourn Bowls and Redbourn Tennis Club Following an introductory session for Tennis Club members, as part of a Redbourn Bowls Club strategy to increase awareness of the pleasure of bowls, a challenge match between the club and the Redbourn Tennis Club took place on Monday 12th November at the Redbourn Leisure Centre. The Bowls Club won the match but the Tennis Club players gave a good account of themselves. The morning was rounded off with tea and cakes in the Centre and all agreed it had been a most enjoyable event. Margaret Davis, Bowls Chairman, congratulated the visitors and hoped some of them might take up bowls seriously. She added that in any return match at tennis the boot would very much be on the other foot! Margaret will be delighted to hear from any other club or organisa on that would like to par cipate in a similar event. She can be contacted on 07966 742568. The pictures show a group of happy members of the two clubs and a member of the Tennis Club in ac on.

New Library for Redbourn Community in 2019

An empty house: Before and After People in Central Bedfordshire are being encouraged to report empty houses in their area in a bid to bring them back into use. Last year more than 90 long term empty proper es were transformed to become homes with the work of officers at Central Bedfordshire Council.

News update from Cara Brazier, Volunteer Redbourn Library Russell Barrow, Principal Librarian for West Herts, was a guest speaker at Redbourn Community Library’s Annual General Mee ng. He spoke about the new Library which is being built onto the exis ng Fire Sta on in Redbourn. The work has commenced and is due to be completed, furnished and opera onal by May 2019. Russell confirmed that there will be a new crossing on the road near the library. The interior has been designed to be used as a flexible space, with moveable fixtures to create sea ng areas and more space, if and when needed. The current commi ee will be involved in the furnishing of the new library as well as the selec on of new equipment. Redbourn Library is completely Volunteer led and is always looking for more helpers to work in the library and to support with story and rhyme me. Come into the current library on Lamb Lane to find out more.

NEW OPENING HOURS THE LIBRARY IS NOW OPEN ON A THURSDAY MORNING! There is also a slight change to Saturday hours; MON 2pm 6pm: TUES 2pm – 6pm; WED 2pm – 6pm: THUR 9.30am – 12.30pm; FRIDAY 2pm – 6pm: SAT 9:30am – 12.30pm

The council work with the owners of proper es to bring them back into use, and where this is not possible take enforcement ac on. Proper es become empty for many reasons, including family disputes, renova on costs or the death of an owner. Empty houses are at high risk of both deteriora on and vandalism and the longer they remain unoccupied the higher the risk. Work to give these homes a new lease of life ensures more houses are available, and local communi es thrive.

Before

Empty houses reported to the council are assessed and owners are contacted to offer help and advice. The council can: provide financial assistance, help draw up a schedule of works and plans, advise on Planning and Building Control, help with procuring builders and managing the project or manage the completed property through the Le ngs Agency (for privately owned rental proper es). Whilst most only need advice, some enforcement ac on has been necessary where there is no possibility of bringing a property back into use through nego a on. If you are the owner of an empty property, please contact us as we can help you to bring it back into use. For more informa on visit the website for Central Bedfordshire.

Dunstable Gymnastics WINNERS OF SPORTS ACHIEVEMENT AWARD 2018

Dunstable Gymnastics were the winners of the 2018 Sports Achievement award from Dunstable and Houghton Regis Business and Community Awards 2018. Club members were overwhelmed to win, not only because they were commended for their coaching but more so that they received recognition for the extra support they provide to the children in the club.

The Club doesn’t just teach gymnastics it helps children with confidence, team building and overcoming problems, and gives each one a safe, happy place where they are part of an extended family. The Coaches often give up their time to give the gymnasts opportunities to compete and take part in charity events. Their latest challenge was The Keech Hospice Charity event “The Greatest Showman” and before that a Floor and Vault competition where Dunstable brought home over 20 medals.

One young mum has said, “Marie and her team are great role models to many children. The commitment to the club alone is amazing and each member is cared for. Marie’s Children no longer compete but have followed in her footsteps to become fantastic coaches and give the club a real family feel.” If you would like to contact Dunstable Gymnastics please email Dunstable.gym@gmail.com

NEW Dog Grooming Service in Flamstead

Local resident Ellie Blow has started a new dog grooming business. Dog speciality services are a growth industry with increasingly busy dog-owners looking for professional help for walking, accommodating and grooming their precious pets. Ellie is a professionally trained dog groomer and a graduate of The Dog Grooming Training Academy; she holds a National Certificate in Animal Management. She has been working with dogs for over 10 years, initially gaining experience in a large local boarding kennels. Janet Brown from MiMagazine caught up with Ellie to find out more about her services.

What is your speciality? I work on a one-to-one basis so clients can be assured that their pooch will receive my personal attention during a grooming session. I like to build a good relationship with the dogs by spending time interacting with them so they trust me and enjoy being pampered by me. Due to my experience, I am very confident at reassuring nervous dogs. No crates or cage dryers are ever used. Do you cater for all ages, sizes and breeds of dogs? Yes I do. I have all new equipment which includes a large professional stainless steel, electrically controlled bath allowing large and less mobile dogs to simply step in. I only use quality products to ensure your dog gets the best treatment. Where are you based? I am based in Flamstead, in a calm and stress-free environment for your dog. My newly built log cabin is situated within a two acre garden.

1

Do you own a dog? Yes, JoJo, (right), a cheeky Jack Russell x Dachshund rescue puppy and she was the inspiration for my new logo.

Ellie welcomes you so why not take a visit...

A421 News Update – road closures for 2019 The project to widen the A421 into dual carriageway will need two bridges to be extended: the Cranfield Road bridge, plus a footbridge near Hulcote that will Dripsnthingsquarter.indd safely 1 take pedestrians, horse riders and cyclists over the wider A421 and the M1 (via four public rights of way). The A421 will be closed for the safety of our workers and the public to prepare for these bridges to be extended. Road closures will be limited as much as possible to the least busy times. Weekend Closures Cranfield Road bridge will be closed from 8pm on Friday 11th January, to 6am on Monday 14th January 2019. This is for laying the foundations so a temporary bridge can be constructed to carry utility company pipes and cables. Then from 8pm on Friday 1st February, to 6am on Monday 4th February 2019, both the A421 (from Eagle Farm roundabout to Junction 13 of the M1) and Cranfield Road will be closed. This will enable three sections of the temporary bridge to be put in which will carry the BT, Anglian Water and Western Power services over the existing A421 and M1, whilst the Cranfield Road bridge is demolished. A crane will lift each section into place.  Cranfield Road Bridge Closure To extend the permanent road bridge on Cranfield Road, they’ll need to close that road from May 2019. The bridge is expected to be closed for up to 14 months whilst the improvements are done. To adverse call 07941 661004

Communi es Crack Down on Speeding Drivers with new Council funded Ten speed detec on kits worth £22,000 have been purchased by Central Bedfordshire Council for local communi es to use to help stop speeding traffic in their neighbourhoods. The council has been working with Bedfordshire Police to iden fy priority areas across Central Bedfordshire. As a result, speed detec on devices were given out by the council to Community Speed Watch representa ves in various villages including Caddington.

Volunteers will be trained by the police and the using the devices, they can check and record driver speeds within 20, 30 or 40mph speed limit zones. The data they collect is passed to the police, who then arrange for the registered keeper of the vehicle to be wri en to, informing them that their vehicle was detected exceeding the speed limit. The police will take further ac on for persistent speeders. The volunteer patrols

can act as a deterrent to speeding and help to improve the safety of roadusers. Anyone interested in volunteering or finding out more informa on should email speedwatch@bedfordshire. pnn.police.uk

Domes c abuse is everybody’s business Some young people may not even know it is abuse and enter into unhealthy rela onships themselves or think it’s acceptable to replicate the abuse they have seen. It’s important that people know what to look out for so that they protect themselves and their families lets help to break the cycle of domes c abuse together!

Domes c abuse affects 1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men in the UK during their life me and sadly over 750,000 children annually. In Her ordshire, children were known to be present in the home in 26% of all reported domes c abuse crimes and incidents in 2015/16 and in 14% of these, children had viewed the abuse taking place.

Living in a home where there is domes c abuse is harmful to children and young people can have a serious impact on their behaviour and wellbeing both in the present and future. Parents and carers some mes underes mate the effects, especially longterm. It’s a very complex issue and can manifest in a whole range of complex behaviours in children and young people such as becoming withdrawn, anxious, struggling with school, experiencing problems sleeping or ea ng, displaying aggressive or bullying behaviour, selfharming, or having problems with drugs or alcohol.

A Close Look at Crime Figures in the MiMagazine Circula on Area It is a daily occurrence for a burglary or a car crime to be reported on one of the local social media sites so I thought I would find out more about the crime sta s cs. I looked on the Home Office site under Police.UK and pulled off the sta s cs in three loca ons which covers the magazine’s circula on area. The figures in this ar cle show the breakdown in crimes reported to the Police. What was most surprising is that by far the biggest crimes in all areas are an social behaviour, followed by sexual abuse and violence. Take a look at the figures; they make interes ng reading. Clearly the Police spend most of their me inves ga ng crimes in these two categories.

Safe Plate Event Redbourn Auto Solu ons 17th November

Don’t be a Vic m of House Burglaries Maximum Security Systems will protect your homes, by installing burglar alarms, CCTV and security ligh ng. Homes with no security measures in place are far more likely to be targeted and burgled. Take control and DON’T BE A VICTIM. Most burglaries commi ed in our area are by opportunist burglars and because of their lifestyles, these burglars need to steal every day; they do not take a day off! The sad fact is that they do not care about your feelings, they want your cash, phones, laptops, sen mental jewellery and heirlooms.

The Safe Plate event hosted by Redbourn Autos is an ini a ve from Her ordshire Constabulary to help prevent crime.

To deter these opportunists you should install a quality Maximum Security burglar alarm, which includes an external bell box. Most burglars will be able to tell if a bell box is fake, so avoid was ng money on a “dummy box”, use a real alarm system.

Customers were invited to bring their vehicles along and have the screws in their number plates replaced with new, tamper free screws. Alex Peduto, Police Community Support Officer changed the screws which took only a couple of minutes. He said, “the tamperfree screws cannot be unscrewed so would be thieves cannot remove the number plates without ripping them off and breaking them.” Number plate the is a common prac se where thieves put the stolen plates on stolen but similar cars to avoid being caught. Officer Paduto stressed that motorists should always report stolen plates to receive a crime number as soon as it happens so that if any incident happens with vehicles using the stolen plates, the owners can prove they are not guilty of the motoring offences. Ian Wooding Jones, proprietor of Redbourn Autos said, “having your number plates stolen can create hassle for months, even years for car owners. They can receive parking fines, speeding fines and other motoring offences, long a er the plates have been stolen.” This service was offered free to all motorists who brought their cars along to the event.

Maximum Security Systems install wireless alarms that can be tailor made to suit your home, they are versa le and “pet friendly”. The alarm can be monitored by yourselves through an app, you can check the status of your alarm at any me and you will receive a no fica on if your alarm is ac vated. You can also set and unset the alarm through the app. An addi onal deterrent is CCTV, Maximum Security Systems will install a CCTV system to suit your property and your needs. You will be able to view your cameras at any me through an app on your phone. If there are suspicious people around, you will be in an excellent posi on to iden fy them. Ligh ng has proven to be an effec ve tool in home security so Maximum Security Systems will install mo on ac vated lights. They will install good outside ligh ng to cover your doorways and any shadowy/dark areas outside your home. Having your home broken into can have a devasta ng financial and emo onal impact on families, the effects of which can stay with an individual for a very long me. DON’T BE A VICTIM.

FIRE AT TC FEEDS IN KENSWORTH Local teenagers are believed to be responsible for a hay barn fire on Halloween. The barn, at TC Feeds in Kensworth, was used to store winter hay and straw, all of which was destroyed in the blaze. Luckily the shop and other proper es were not affected and it was business as usual the next day. Good luck in restoring the barn and ge ng everything back to normal.

Smart Motorways Be honest... how fast do you drive on the motorway? 70? 80?... 90+? Would it surprise you to know that, according to the official Department for Transport statistics (2013), nearly half of vehicles travelling on UK motorways broke the 70mph speed limit. The AA believe that the default speed limit on Britain’s motorways is now effectively 80mph, largely because motorists know they won’t be prosecuted travelling at that speed and therefore it is almost accepted as the common law speed limit. In a reaction to these startling facts, the government have introduced SMART Motorways, but what impact do they have on us? Can we continue to drive the way we always have done? After all, we haven’t had an accident yet... Why do they exist?

Highways England’s aim in introducing smart motorways is to manage traffic in a way that minimises environmental impact whilst increasing capacity, but without the expense and hassle of widening the road. Smart motorways are also extremely effective at managing speed and ensuring that motorists adhere to national speed limits, or variable limits which are set. A good example of managing the environmental impact is around Luton Airport. Have you ever wondered why the motorway seems to be permanently set at 50mph around Luton even when there is little sign of traffic congestion? There are national limits to air pollution and a car running smoothly at 50mph pushes out less harmful gases than one travelling at 70mph or one sitting in traffic.

What are SMART Motorways?

According to the government website, ‘A smart motorway uses technology to actively manage the flow of traffic. The technology is controlled from a regional traffic control centre. The control centres To adverse call 07941 661004

monitor traffic carefully and can activate and change signs and speed limits. This helps keep the traffic flowing freely’. Basically, they control your speed to prevent congestion and unnecessary pollution.

How do they work?

The Control Centre is able to use different methods to control traffic flow, some of which are automated.

All Lane Running Scheme

All lanes remain open, all of the time. This provides a cheaper option than widening a motorway. This is possibly the scheme that has caused most concern for safety officials as the hard shoulder is removed to enable free flowing traffic. Emergency Refuge Areas are situated at regular intervals to help with any breakdowns.

Controlled Motorways

This is where variable speed limits are controlled and changed remotely. It prevents lengthy queues around accidents on the motorway or even another motorway! The roads also have sensors in the tarmac which can detect when there has been an issue and automatically change the gantry to reflect a lane closure or a required reduction in speed.

Dynamic Hard Shoulder Running Schemes

The control centre opens up the hard shoulder for use at peak congestion times.

Are they dangerous?

Some believe that by taking away the hard shoulder the motorway has become more dangerous as there is nowhere to escape to. However, statistics from Highways England indicate that: Journey reliability has improved by 22 per cent, personal injury accidents have been reduced by more than 50 per cent and where accidents did occur, severity was much lower overall with zero fatalities and fewer seriously injured.

What happens if I break down?

No-one enjoys a break down and prevention is better than cure! The advice here is always to keep your Please menon

31 33 car well maintained. Before setting out on a journey, check your tyres and make sure you have enough fuel for your journey. Ensure you have adequate breakdown cover in place so that you can make your own arrangements for recovery and it’s wise to carry the details of this with you. In the unlikely event that you experience difficulties, it is advised to take the next exit. If that’s not possible, it is important to move into the nearest place of relative safety – hard shoulder or emergency refuge area. The government guide ‘how to drive on a smart motorway’ recommends you should follow these steps: 1. Use an emergency refuge area if you are able to reach one safely. These are marked with blue signs featuring an orange SOS telephone symbol on them. 2. If you can leave your vehicle safely, contact High ways England via the roadside emergency telephone provided in all emergency refuge areas. A traffic officer will be despatched to help you, or set the motorway signs to temporarily clear lane 1 to assist you to rejoin the motorway. 3. If you cannot get to an emergency refuge area but the vehicle can be driven, move it to the hard shoulder (where provided) or as close to the nearside verge or other nearside boundary as possible. 4. In all cases, switch on your hazard warning lights.

This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY-SA

What happens if I get caught speeding?

The same laws apply regardless of the type of road you are driving on. However, your chance of getting caught is significantly higher on a smart motorway as there are more cameras and variable speed limits. When the gantry signs have nothing on them, the speed limit reverts to the national speed limit… BEWARE – the cameras are still active even if there is nothing showing in the screen… and they are very effective! It’s not just speeding you can get caught out on… ignoring the red ‘X’ sign can be extremely dangerous. Currently they rely on manual enforcement, but camera enforcement is expected from Summer 2019. Sanctions can include being offered a Motorway Awareness course or fines and points on your licence.

If you stop in the nearside lane next to a hard shoulder or verge and feel you are able to exit safely with any occupants, consider exiting your vehicle via the nearside (left hand) door, and if there is a safety barrier and safe to do so, wait behind it. If it is not possible to get out of your vehicle safely, or there is no other place of relative safety in which to wait, then you should stay in your vehicle with your seat belt on and, if you have access to a working mobile phone, dial ‘999’.

Herts Constabulary have reported that Hertfordshire has 8% more accidents on motorways than the national average. This is largely due to our county having more busy motorway miles than other counties. When accidents happen on the motorway, it can go spectacularly wrong because of the high impact of speed. So, isn’t it about time there are stronger regulations?!

Once the regional traffic control centre is aware of your situation, via the police or roadside technology such as CCTV, they can use the smart motorway technology to set overhead signs and close the lane to help keep traffic away from you. They will also send a traffic officer or the police to help you.

Prevent breakdowns by regularly maintaining your car, ensure you have adequate recovery service cover and avoid any penalties by not breaking the speed limits!

Team of Six Local Teenagers take on The Na onal 3 Peaks Challenge Wri en by Melanie Wooding Jones, mother to 16year old Aimee, one of the intrepid challengers.

Aimee, a student at St George’s School in Harpenden, took on the challenge to raise funds to support of her expedi on in the jungles of Borneo as part of Outlook World Challenge ini a ve to provide a nature conserva on and rural clean water. World Challenge was set up 30 years ago to help young people build the life skills they need to live a life of courage, kindness and adventure. In a bid to raise funds, she decided to a empt the Na onal 3 Peaks Challenge. And why wouldn’t you? Surely, it’s the most natural decision in the world to make when you have no experience of climbing one of the highest mountains in the UK, let alone all three. Would that determina on see her complete The Challenge? Read on … She wasn’t going to a empt the adventure on her own. Her friends Millie, Mia, Helena, Ella and Finlay were also up for the challenge. As an experienced leader, Jeremy Hepworth of Hepworth Adventures, was going to be a safe pair of hands to lead them up Snowdon, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis – the highest mountains in Wales, England and Scotland. Many would say that the best me of year for such a climb would be in the warmer months, but these intrepid adventurers started their quest on 27th October 2018 and faced snowcapped mountains in freezing temperatures that reached 14 degrees. With kit checks completed and a bit of expert planning by Millie, at 4am on a very cold morning the team set off on the journey from Harpenden to Snowdonia in Wales. A er a short sleep, excitement took over and the

minibus was filled with the sound of enthusias c teenagers singing.

to slush and as the temperature began to rise so did their spirits!

Their first mountain was Snowdon. Huge rocks were climbed and the team faced hail and ice. It was a scary place to be as visibility was poor and the final ascent took place on freshly fallen snow. They had a sixfoot wall to ascend, each helping the others over the top and a er another 122 ice covered steps, they reached the summit. They felt an incredible sense of achievement.

They travelled to the Lake District that evening, and there was more singing in the minibus. They enjoyed a hearty spaghe Bolognese, followed by a good sleep and were then ready to takeon their second mountain.

Just two hours before, Aimee had been in tears not knowing whether she would reach the top, and here she was at the top of Snowdon, feeling on top of the world, and looking forward to the next day when Scafell Pike in the Lake District was their challenge. The decent from Snowdon felt just as hard as the ascent. Legs were shaking as different muscles were used, but the team supported each other by linking arms and catching each other as they slipped. The further down the mountain they travelled the more the snow turned

Scafell Pike is higher than Snowdon but it is not as steep which was a relief for all involved. Aimee’s knees were aching from the first day’s hike and she had to wear supports to help her. As they approached the ‘path’ they realised it was made up of steps. It was 1,033 steps up and all the girls’ legs were hur ng, but Aimee’s were painful even with the supports. They commenced their final ascent on all fours over icy rocks which were unstable under foot, it was snowing and visibility was poor. Sadly, they couldn’t see very much from the top. They decided to take the hard route down so again they struggled with shaky legs and maintaining a constant body Continued on page 36...

36 Was it worth it? Of course it was! Coming back off the mountain, some were running, one was dancing, and there were tears of joy. They knew they had achieved so much in so few days and it was a great team effort. Awesome. The parents and friends of these inspiring 1516yearolds are so proud of what they have acheived. Our hear elt thanks to Ben and Nicola Mar n and Magnus Lorainne Smith for all the driving; Jeremy Hepsworth (Hepsworth Adventures) for his expert guidance; Ian Wooding Jones (Redbourn Auto Solu ons) for the loan of the Minibus and of course, the parents who ensured that the equipment was in place and the tray bakes were plen ful. Thank you to all of those who have supported Aimee and her friends on their Just Giving pages. It has encouraged them to achieve what they thought was impossible.

Ben Nevis might be a step too far. She was limping and joint disloca on was a real risk but she stunned the team when she declared that she had come this far and her knees weren’t going to stop her!

temperature was difficult. Outside was cold, but inside their clothing was hot so they removed and returned layers of clothing several mes as they travelled across the peaks. Further down the mountain they were able to refill their water bo les straight from the streams which was a welcome refreshment when socks were wet and toes were cold. But there was a great sense of accomplishment as another mountain was successfully summited. There was no me to relax and once more in song, they headed off to Scotland to take on the awesome Ben Nevis. A substan al Sco sh fish and chip supper was the reward before a good night’s sleep in prepara on for the ‘big one’ next day. That morning, Aimee’s knees were swollen so it was feared that

The team chose their route and set off through some spectacular scenery. A close eye was kept on the weather as torren al rain was forecast only a few miles away, which would have made the climb impossible. A er a couple of hours heading up the mountain, Aimee’s knees were suffering and she was advised on medical grounds to return to basecamp to prevent permanent damage. As a dancer, this was not the news she was looking for. However, she was admired by the rest of the team for her achievement. Bi erly disappointed, there was nothing else she could do but to listen to the advice given and leave the team to finish the task without her.

If you’d like to support Aimee, her page is: www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding /aimeewoodingjones All dona ons are very gratefully received and will go directly to help the people and the cri cally endangered Orangutans of Borneo. Ben Nevis was the toughest climb of all and they had to push themselves beyond what they thought was possible in order to reach the summit; but despite it being a cold, wet and difficult climb, they did it.

The elderly are more at risk of electrical hazards in the home by Samantha Mager

Super Vac will unblock 11,000 drains this Winter Central Bedfordshire Council are preparing to beat the big freeze this winter by using a new vehicle to tackle blocked drains across the region. The council’s highways team has rented a ‘Super Vac’ which will be used to clean and unblock around 11,000 drains during the winter period. Unlike the normal machine, the Super Vac has a more powerful jet pressure which means it unblocks even the toughest of blocked drains and pipes in just a couple of minutes. It also has the power to deal with blockages from tree roots and is capable of clearing hundreds of metres of pipe in one day. It will mean that the council can clean more drains this year than previously, improving the local road condi ons during the winter period whilst also saving the council both me and money. Residents who no ce a blocked drain can report it to the council at www.centralbedfordshire.gov.uk /repor t.

The older genera on are at a higher risk of electrical hazards and accidents within their homes than younger people are,” says Samantha Mager, pos ng from Electrical Safety First.

For more informa on www.centralbedfordshire.gov.uk

This problem is heightened due to the loneliness and social neglect which may be faced by some members of the older popula on. Figures from Age UK tell a sombre story, as 3.6 million older people live alone with 1.9 million saying that they o en feel ignored or invisible.

If you are a resident of Central Bedfordshire and using a van, pickup, large trailer or car towing a single axle trailer (from 1.2m x 0.9m up to 1.8m x 1.2m), you will need a waste permit to dispose of the following: • recyclable waste • general waste • DIY waste (up to 6 items per month, examples below) • fridges • freezers • tyres

Elderly adults are likely to overlook electrical hazards within their own home. They typically live in older houses which may contain faulty electrics and appliances and where electrical checks and inspec ons are seldom undertaken. Senior ci zens are also o en limited by health issues that could make it difficult for them to spot and iden fy these issues within their own home. Here are our top 5 ps on how to keep your elderly rela ves safe from electrical and fire hazards: • Check out for sockets that are overloaded or any visible damage/wear and tear to electrical devices. • If you do come across faulty electrical equipment or outdated devices, be sure to tell the home owner or responsible person and to also be willing to contribute your me and money to having these repaired or replaced. • To help your older rela ves be er understand the risks they are facing, spend some me educa ng them on what they can do for themselves around the house. • If you know you can’t dedicate the me to visi ng your rela ves, it may be worth inves ng in a caregiver who can provide company as well as ensure that the house remains safe, or ask a few neighbours to visit regularly. • If you do no ce any lifethreatening electrical risks within the home, make sure you contact a registered electrician. If the property is over 50 years old and its electrics haven’t been checked in the last 10 years, ask the registered electrician to carry out an Electrical Installa on Condi on Report (EICR).

Legal Ma ers Made Simple Cohabi ng siblings could win same treatment as married couples

Are you a cohabi ng sibling? If so, read on… In this issue, legal expert Nicole Marmor of Sherrards looks at the possible change in the law regarding inheritance tax for cohabi ng siblings. In October Prime Minister Theresa May announced that heterosexual couples will be able to enter into civil partnerships, giving them substan al tax benefits. It could open the way for cohabi ng siblings to also receive the same treatment, pending a proposed change in the law. Ms May’s announcement follows a Supreme Court ruling in June this year to allow Rebecca Steinfeld and Charles Keidan to have a civil partnership instead of a marriage. Before this, only same sex couples were allowed such partnerships.

This means that, in the case of these sisters, there would be substan al extra inheritance tax to pay. In one case, the surviving sister would be forced to sell their home of 23 years. Both sets of sisters want the law changed to give legal recogni on to ‘sibling’ couples who have decided to spend their lives together, in jointly owned homes un l parted by death. The Civil Partnership Act bans ‘prohibited degrees of kindred and affinity’, which includes siblings. Lord Lexden has proposed a bill to include siblings in the Act. The bill received its second reading in the House of Lords in July but has yet to reach commi ee stage. So, a change could be coming soon. But in the mean me, the death of a cohabi ng sibling could leave the survivor with the only op ons of selling up, borrowing money, or using an equity release scheme.

A couple in a civil partnership is en tled to the same beneficial treatment in terms of tax, pensions and inheritance as married couples. The ruling therefore aims to provide greater security for unmarried couples who have formalised their rela onships, and for their families. But some siblings who have been cohabi ng for years believe they should have the same rights too.

Sister Act inclusion Two recent cases have highlighted the issue. Both involve sisters who had lived together for over 30 and 43 years respec vely. In both cases, each sister wanted to leave her estate, including her share of the jointlyowned home, to the other. Both homes, over me, had risen substan ally in value. However, on the death of the first sister, her estate will only benefit from the £325,000 tax free allowance and not any of the extra benefits that married couples and civil partnerships now receive including the extra inheritance tax allowance introduced in April 2017 in rela on to the family home. This currently allows an extra £125,000 to be passed taxfree to children and grandchildren. Siblings are also excluded from the right to pass assets to each other free of inheritance tax.

Music and singing lessons in schools

Learning to play a musical instrument or singing can be an extremely rewarding experience for your child, and the obvious place to start is at school. But learning at school is just the beginning Learning to play the piano is just one of the many options they have for your children. Some schools might have the option to learn an instrument, but the opportunities to play or perform with others could be limited. That is why they are keen for children to get involved at one of their Inspiring Music Centres, which offer a huge range of musical activities: • guitars and keyboards • orchestras • bands • choirs • recorders • drum kit • rock groups • pre-school activities and much more The Inspiring Music Centres in Central Bedfordshire provide for students of all ages and standards, from beginner upwards, with a wide range of opportunities to develop musicianship and playing skills. For most people, music has its greatest impact when played with others! “Music does a lot of things for a lot of people. It’s transporting, for sure. It can take you right back, years back, to the very moment certain things happened in your life. It’s uplifting, it’s encouraging, it’s strengthening.” These are the words of the late Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin. Dog School helps teach your puppy or dog to settle ... Did you know that training your puppy to ‘stay’ calmly in one place can help both of you feel settled in your daily routine? Learning to ‘stay’ can be a useful behaviour to teach your dog when you need them to remain in a certain place. Begin by asking your dog to ‘sit’, and reward them with a treat. Encourage them to stand up, and repeat, gradually building up the time until they can stay sitting for five seconds. Next, introduce the word ‘stay’. Ask your dog to sit, then say ‘stay’ and wait five seconds before rewarding them with a treat. Gradually continue to build up the time that your dog stays sitting still. Once your dog can sit still for about 10 seconds, keep the amount of time unpredictable! Ask for three seconds before rewarding and releasing them, then four, and so on. You can now gradually begin to lean away and then start moving away, just one step at a time, ensuring you go back and reward your dog for being still. For more ways to make life for you and your puppy ‘a walk in the park’, visit Dogs Trust Dog School.

Luton Hoo Estate and Bedfordshire Gardens Trust

Advance notice of a Study Day: The impact of WW1 on a Bedfordshire Estate: Luton Hoo Wednesday 10 April 2019 The years leading up to the outbreak of the Great War saw national, social and economic changes which gradually impacted upon our country estates. During the war they played a vital role in providing manpower and skills for the armed forces and food for the nation, but this came at a cost. Owners and their heirs were killed, skilled workers were lost, taxes and death duties increased dramatically, and many estates struggled to survive. The repercussions were to be felt well into the twentieth century. The programme of talks, displays and a tour will present an overview of the period with special reference to estates in Bedfordshire and the Luton Hoo Estate in particular. Why did it survive almost intact when others were sold or disappeared altogether? Topics to be considered will include: x x x x x

The agricultural depression at the end of the 19th century and its effect upon the Luton Hoo Estate. The contribution of the Wernher family to the war effort at a national and local level. Estate employees who went to fight. The Women’s Land Army. How Luton Hoo and other estates evolved after WW1. Location: Luton Hoo Estate, Luton, Bedfordshire Enquiries to info@lhwg.org.uk or secretary@bedsgardenstrust.org.uk www.lutonhooestate.co.ukwww.bedsgardenstrust.org.uk

Advertise with MiMag and get results We deliver doortodoor 10,000 copies of the magazine; each issue with an es mated audience of 30,000. The mag sits on kitchen tables, coffee tables and the like and is a regular source of reference for many of our readers. Unlike social media adver sing, it does not flash past your eyes and is gone; it is there to pick up and read for as long as you, the householder, wants to keep it. Also, social media used to be a cheap source of adver sing. Now it is not …and it is

intrusive… so we believe our business card sized advert for just £39, or three for £99, is excellent value as a star ng point or as a regular inclusion in our Directory of Services. Why not give us a try? Now that Facebook and other online adver sers have increased their prices, we offer even be er value for money. CALL 07941 661004 or email janet@mimagazine.co.uk
