WELCOME TO MIMAGAZINE Your local magazine for Redbourn, Markyate, Flamstead, Caddington, Slip End, Aley Green, Woodside, Kensworth, Whipsnade, Studham, Dagnall, Ringshall and the Gaddesdens.
Dear Readers, All In aid of Charity I am amazed at how much goes on every month in our local villages to raise money for charity. People are so charitable today and just looking through the contents of this magazine, many of the events are in aid of a charity. As we approach the fes ve season and we turn our hearts and minds to giving, I believe our society is largely doing a ďŹ ne job of giving to worthy causes. I a ended a dinner dance fund raiser at Luton Hoo in October in aid of the Keech Hospice. It was an excellent do with celebrity chefs and amazing prizes but from the room of 300 plus people, a massive ÂŁ52,000 was raised on the night. That’s ÂŁ175 per head. We should thank our lucky stars, or the lord above, for living in such an auent and caring society. That’s why so many less fortunate people want to live here I guess! Looking at the content of this magazine, these are the recent charity events: The Her ordshire Garden Centre’s day was in aid of the Hospice of St Francis; The Flamstead Scarecrow Fes val was in aid of the Friends of St Leonard’s Church and The Mul ple Sclerosis Therapy Centre; Harpers’ Gi and Cra Fair was for MacMillans, as was the coee and cake day at The Plume of Feathers in Markyate; The Gaddesden Estate Ride was in aid of Riding for the Disabled and The Bri sh Horse Society; The Holly Bush in Redbourn is to hold a quiz night for Transi ons UK and the Quiz Night in the Swan Barn was in aid of the Scouts’ Fund. Caddington Village Show was in aid of Save the HeathďŹ eld Centre, Markyate Spice are to hold a Cancer Research charity night in December, once they conďŹ rm a celebrity appearance; The Bap st Church in Markyate are holding a Christmas Fair in aid of Save the Children on 4th November, and ďŹ nally, to protect the ducks from the foxes, Caddington St George’s Society raised money to build a oa ng duck house! Please keep me informed of your society or village news and any suitable goingsÂon for inclusion in the next magazine. Enjoy ďŹ reworks’ night, and the fastÂapproaching fes ve season.

Curry Life Best Chef Award 2016 goes to Ansar Miah of Markyate Spice The much coveted Best Chef award from Curry Life magazine was awarded to the chef at the new Indian restaurant in Markyate. Ansar Miah was awarded the Best Chef award at a ceremony in London last weekend. Along with all the other nominated chefs, he had to produce a range of dishes, including starters, mains, vegetables and rice dishes for a panel of judges. He worked for me before in one of my other restaurants so I am very pleased that he is back with me. This is a pres gious award for him to win and it will a ract more people to our restaurant.”

Gin Tas ng is trending Spo ed Dog 23rd August, Flamstead Report and photos by Sue Mitchell
T
he Spo ed Dog, known as the Inn with the Gins, hosted a Gin Tas ng evening where guests were invited to try nine different gins with five chosen tonics to complement them. For just £10 each guest was able to sample the selec on of 9 gins and nibbles were included in the price. In return, you had to ‘rate’ the gin according to your personal taste. I a ended with my husband and although I was intending to drive home but the tempta on was too strong and I succumbed, joining the fi y or so gin lovers who packed into the pub. A er a wonderful night of gin tas ng, we had a merry two mile walk home to Markyate.
Guest speakers, Ben and Kate Marston told the assembled gin tasters their exci ng story of how they were inspired to start dis lling their own gin. Ben said, “There is a renaissance in the gin industry. Gin is very much the ‘in’ drink today and we have started to dis l our own gin which we have named Campfire.” Their gin making adventure all started in 2014 when Ben was grounded a er a wrist opera on. The long hours of recupera on were not idle for him. He bought two books from Waterstones, including Simon Difford’s “Guide to Gin” and began his studies of gin and dis lling. Working for Tring Brewery, he had the knowledge of the ‘brewing’ industry and his wife Kate is a professional marketer, so their combined skills, plus their passion for gin, convinced them to ‘go for It’. Enjoying exploring the great outdoors supplied another essen al ingredient for their ambi ous project – the brand name. A bush camp in Kenya, required a flight in a small private aeroplane and when safely landed, the side came down to reveal a li le cocktail cabinet full of gins. This iden ty with gin and adventure led to the naming of their gin Campfire and their strapline – Spirit of the Outdoors. “We studied hard and we did a lot of market research, which meant that we drank a lot of gin,” said Ben. “We entered a Dragon’s Den type compe on and won a grant for £1,000. We used it to make a video to raise more money. We achieved £23,000. We went on the hunt for a property and decided upon a purposebuilt site in Tring. We use tradi onal stainless steel s lls and our first gin, Campfire Gin balances London Dry style gin with newer styles.”

What is the name of their new dis llery? Puddingstone and it is a small batch gin dis llery. Did we like Campfire Gin at the tas ng? Yes, we did. It was my favourite of the night. This is how the connoisseurs describe it: English and citrus. A smooth, fruity, warming,
balanced gin with cascara. Cascara comes from a par cular coffee growing region where the fruit that surrounds the bean is removed and sun dried.

his was the 15th year for the fes val, which goes to show what an amazing community spirit the village has. All proceeds are split between the Friends of St Leonards Church and The Herts Mul ple Sclerosis Therapy Centre, Letchworth. The sort of problems covered at the Therapy Centre are for people affected by MS and other neurological long term condi ons. Although there is funding from local sources, a lot of extra money is needed. Herts MS Therapy Centre raised money with children's games, including 'hook the duck', which was very popular and 'guess how many sweets in the jar?’. If you wish to get involved or would like to donate visit: www.hertsmstherapy.org.uk Friends of St Leonards (FoSL) is a charity which con nues to preserve and maintain the Grade I listed building, which needs ongoing work to repair the stonework and to prevent damp from destroying the beau ful pain ngs. Paul McMahon and Lee Greenwood are the main orgainsers of the event and have been so for the past 10 years. Paul commented, “Once the fes val is over, we start work on the next one; it takes months of prepara on and this year’s was no excep on. We had over 120 scarecrows registered, which is up on the previous year.” As always, Appletrees Nursery put on a great display for the event.

Floa ng Duck House launched by St George’s Society, Caddington A
n elegant duck house was launched at Caddington Pond at 6pm on 9th September, hosted by the St George’s Society of Caddington. Designed and engineered by Ma hew Tomlin, this beau ful wooden structure, with varnished exterior, was donated to Caddington Village by Ma hew for just the cost of the materials £20.
“I have ducks at home,” said Carol Jones of the Society, “and I have lost them to foxes. This gave me the idea to build a floa ng duck house to protect our ducks from predators. A er discussion in commi ee it was agreed that we should have one made, and Ma hew who is an engineer, produced this beau ful house for them which will float on the pond.” Forty or so residents gathered for the official unveiling which was adeptly executed by nimble James MacPherson, who walked the ladder to get onto the central island for the ceremony. Prosecco and nibbles were offered to the gathering by members of the St George’s Commi ee. Another good community event for Caddington.

Have you tried the new Indian Restaurant in Markyate yet? MARKYATE SPICE Classic Indian food with an exo c blend of Nepalese

M
arkyate Spice opened its doors to the public in July this year, a er an extensive refurbishment of what was the old café, and before that, in years gone by, the post office on Markyate’s High Street.
Chef Award
Restaurant owner, Gyash Uddin who has two other Indian restaurants, leapt at the chance to take over the lease as soon as it became available at the beginning of the year. “I have been interested in this lovely old village for nearly ten years and with the new housing developments, and the expansion of the village, I thought it was a great opportunity for us. The building is listed and so we were limited on the expansion that we could do but we have produced a restaurant that blends modern design with the tradi onal charm of the building. We have made an extension at the back to give us a state of the art kitchen and we have a snug area for private par es and small groups. So far it is going very well and we are busy,” said Gyash. Top Award for the Chef Markyate Spice’s chef, Ansar Miah has just been awarded Best Chef 2016 by Curry Life Magazine at an award ceremony in London. His mother is from Nepal so Ansar brings an exo c blend of Indian and Nepalese cuisine together in his dishes to give them a fresh and exci ng new style and taste. Watch out for the Charity Event planned before Christmas Gyash is planning a charity event with a celebrity guest before Christmas in aid of Cancer Research so look out for news of this ‘can’t miss’ func on for the village. Take away with on line ordering Besides the sitdown restaurant, they offer a takeaway service and will deliver free of charge within a 4 mileradius of Markyate for orders over £12. group of mums from the village, along with the support of local businesses, made the event an enjoyable a ernoon. The show was opened by local author Louise Treleaven, who used to be one of the show’s organisers.
The theme was the Queen’s 90th birthday. The schools and groups were invited to make a ‘hat fit for a queen’, by using any kind of art, cra or recyclable materials. The exhibits filled the en re stage and further! Other categories included cookery, pickles and preserves, photography and cra s. The Heathfield centre is due to close early in 2017; so Wendy Soper and her team were there to ask for your ideas, support and feedback on how to save the site and help shape the future for its development. Wendy commented, “Without the centre there would be no Village Show, no St. Georges Fun day as well as other regular events such as Care Chat & Coffee Mornings, Caddington Care Men’s Group, Baby & Toddlers and Bingo.

Markyate Ma ers Markyate Village mee ng highlights poten al closure of Markyate Surgery
H
ere, Nick Robeson summarises the situa on following the village mee ng in September which was organised by Markyate Ma ers (a Community Facebook group). Our MP, Police & Crime Commissioner, District Councillors and Parish Councillors turned out in force to support the event held at the Bap st Church. Historical decisions taken by Dacorum’s Planning Officers, combined with subsequent mismanagement, has created the very real scenario where Markyate Surgery could close within 18 months. It was clear, from an exchange between Cllr. Jane Timmis and Dr Sepai at last month’s Markyate Village mee ng, that there is a standoff between Dacorum and the private GP prac ce’s plans for the redevelopment of the current site. All par es, including NHS England and Markyate Surgery, must accept the role they played in delivering the now redundant premises on Hick’s Road that was never fit for purpose. In a nutshell, whilst the correct square footage was allocated in Richmond Court the building is totally unsuitable for a GP Surgery with incorrect ceiling heights and no facili es for disabled pa ents. What concerned one resident was the lack of accountability by Borough Councillors. In one impassioned statement he pleaded with Councillors that ‘whilst they may not have a legal obliga on, they had a moral one to resolve this situa on as quickly as possible’. The big ques on now is how all stakeholders can work together quickly to give the village the medical facili es it deserves. A swi commitment that Markyate will have a Doctor’s Surgery beyond 2018 has been requested. Associated to the recent building developments and con nued infilling was a discussion on the impact on parking in the village. With the developers alloca ng space for 1.2 cars per property when the average is two there is huge pressure on parking. Developments have been allowed to go unfinished and Dacorum have yet to invest any of the Sec on 106 money on improving village infrastructure such as providing be er play areas or open spaces promised in the plans they signed off. It is understood the situa on has been made far more complicated as a result of the original developer going bust. More ques ons than answers came out of David Lloyd’s discussion around proposed improvements to traffic in Markyate. He was clearly disappointed that the response at the me of the mee ng had been low but faced some
To adver se call 01582 965760
cri cism about the complicated 42page report produced by his team, that many found hard to decipher. He outlined the likely changes such as the crea on of a 20mph zone in the centre of the village which had been greeted with the most enthusiasm, albeit villagers were keen to see it extended wider than just the High Street. Since the mee ng, one of the Markyate Ma ers team produced a summary of the report which was widely circulated, following which and responses had increased significantly according to County Councillor Lloyd. Ques ons were also asked of Cllr. Langley who, at short no ce, had accepted to fly the flag for the Parish Council (P.C.). Rosalyn Langley, who joined the P.C. as a result of the 2015 Markyate Ma ers mee ng, was only able to give her personal opinion as a result of rules preven ng Councillors from speaking on behalf of the Parish Council in a public forum. The audience were willing the PC to engage more openly and to include in their debate sugges ons and recommenda ons made on social media. Many expressed their desire for new play facili es at both Peggy’s Field and at the Village Hall rather than the proposed refurbishment that is planned later this year. Cllr. Chapman who also has a seat on the P.C. was keen to defend the recent spending of Sec on 106 revenue on further improvements at the Village Hall. When ques oned about the plans for alloca ng the annual £5,000 precept money allocated from our Council Tax (ini ally to repay the costs of building the Y2K Hall), both Cllrs. Langley and Chapman said this money was to cover the running costs of the Parish Council; this is not what this tax levy was ever meant for. In P.C. Minutes for September 2016, funds in the Precept account stood at £50,000. Finally, our local MP and Secretary of State for Defence, Mike Penning, was swi to commend the effort everyone was pu ng in to ensure that as wide an audience as possible was engaged in issues that impact the village.

Country File came to the Gaddesden Estate at Harvest Time Report and photos by Jenny Ivory
The children loved the Combine Harvester
M
any years ago, the BBC did a film on the Gaddesden Estate about harvest involving my grandfather, and they wanted to revisit to compare harves ng then and now. They liked the idea that my dad, Michael Frewin and I were s ll involved. We had a fun day filming, despite the rain and children from the preschool and holiday club par cipated. We played games in the gardens, guessed the vegetable (runner beans/peas/green beans) and tasted them. The children got to look at and try a camcorder from the crew and they learnt about bread making and its associa on with harvest, looking at a harvest loaf. We then went into the kitchen garden for filming and to pick vegetables for the farmers’ harvest tea. With the help of TV presenter Ma Baker, the children searched for and picked carrots, peas, runner beans, le uce, cucumbers and chard. Later on in the day, we went to meet the farmers in the fields where we talked about the harvest and the children were fascinated by the combine harvester. Nick and Viola Halsey, trustees of the Gaddesden Estate were so welcoming and hospitable, making sure there were drinks and snacks for everyone. It was shown on Sunday 4th on BBC 1.

Tread carefully this Winter By Melanie Wooding Jones, Redbourn Auto Solu ons – Caring for you, and your car As we move into the winter months, the temperature dips and we turn our hea ng on to keep warm. The changing weather doesn’t just affect us, but the cold and damp roads can drama cally affect the performance of tyres, leading to an increased accident risk according to the tyre experts at TyreSafe.
Winter tyres are designed to be flexible in temperatures under 7 degrees C. They use so er rubber, deeper tread and covered in sipes (jagged slits) on the tread. This enables a much be er grip and predictability when you drive.
There are various ways of achieving improved trac on with the ground such as winter tyres, chains, or snow socks! Here we will take a look at what the experts say about winter tyres so that we can be well informed when we make a tyre choice this winter. Is it worth the investment or all a load of hype from tyre manufacturers?
Costs
What is different about a Winter Tyre? In the UK, we generally drive on Summer tyres with some preferring allseason tyres. In other parts of Europe it is compulsory to change to Winter tyres between October to March. All these tyres come with different compounds to give you the best breaking performance enhancing your safety according to the season.
To adver se call 01582 965760
Allseason tyres are great, but both summer and winter tyres outperform them.
As with all tyres, cost depends on the quality of the brand. Budget tyres start from below £50, with premium brands of around £100 likely to offer be er grip and breaking performance. You will need to replace all 4 tyres (and the spare) as a mix of winter and summer tyres leads to dangerous instability. Your ‘offseason’ tyres will need to be stored appropriately. Some tyre specialist will store them for you and change them over for a small fee. Although, there is the ini al cost in purchasing the tyres, you will prolong the life of the summer tyres which should also be a considera on.

What do winter tyres do?
Do winter tyres affect my insurance?
Summer tyres go rigid during the winter months when temperatures dip below 7degrees cen grade.
It is always worth double checking your insurance before they are fi ed. Most regard them as enhancing safety, but some disappoin ngly regard them as modifica ons.
The compound used in winter tyres enables the tyre to be more flexible. The sipes (hundreds of small extra edges which are all over the tyre) ensure a good grip as the tyre rotates. The deep tread ensures water or slush are washed away efficiently to increase resistance to aquaplaning. The tread also holds and gathers snow to exploit the virtues of snow gripping best on snow.
What don’t winter tyres do? They offer significantly poorer performance in dry condi ons, above 7 degrees C. Less grip leads to poorer breaking distances and difficul es on bends. Winter tyres also wear quicker if used in warmer temperatures.
Do we have cold enough weather to warrant Winter tyres?
What if I keep to my summer tyres? Check your tyres! There is a 1.6mm legal minimum requirement for tyre tread depths. The AA recommends at least 3mm as a minimum in winter months. Check the tread is a consistent depth across and around the whole tyre. Also look for signs of damage which may cause a sudden tyre failure which can prove catastrophic if travelling when it happens.
Keep safe this winter and if you are in any doubt, ask an expert. At Redbourn Auto Solu ons, we care about your safety. We do not charge to check your tyres and our advice is free.
They are not mandatory here, but in remote parts of the UK where you may be at risk of being cut off without the ability to drive, they may be a wise investment. Winter tyres are usually available in a limited stock throughout the country, so it is wise to purchase them early in the season. For those who are in a more urban se ng, it can be harder to jus fy the expense, or aggrava on of tyre changes, despite their be er performance.

New Landlord for The Holly Bush, Church End, Redbourn Words by Sue Mitchell, Photos by Mick Mitchell
The Old School House
The Holly Bush
Family friendly garden
G
ordon Dickens became the new landlord with his son took on the licence on 19th August this summer. Speaking to Gordon, he said it was a wonderful opportunity to promote the pub as a tradi onal, old English pub which welcomes families.
“We have a tradi onal pub garden for children; and walkers with dogs are very welcome. We are on the Nicky Line so many people walk to us from Harpenden or Hemel and take a lunch stop. They can enjoy a classic pub meal and a pint or glass of wine and then con nue their journey home. It’s a wonderful way to spend a weekend,” said Gordon. Gordon’s son Graeme, the licensee, has earned his spurs in the catering industry by working in pubs, night clubs as well as other sectors of the hospitality industry. Together, they bring a lot of experience and energy to the Holly Bush. Redbourn holds a very popular fireworks night on the Common and The Holly Bush will embrace the celebra ons by offering a winter warmer hotpot plate with mulled wine. There will be a raffle and the winner will get a family of four dinner on the house in November. On 12th November, they have a 5 piece jazz night planned and on 11th December they are holding a charity quiz in aid of Transi ons UK, a charity to help mentor children (1525years) who are coming out of care and need help to prepare them to cope with adulthood and independence. There will be teams from St Albans, Hitchin, Luton and Redbourn. The cost is £8 per person plus £3 for a sausage and chips supper. The winning team will win a round of drinks on the house!

The Holly Bush has an interes ng building on the grounds which was an old school house in the 1870s. Children who worked in the local Workhouse, went to school there. Gordon and Graeme have refurbished this lovely old building and besides being used as a pub func on room for weddings and other celebra ons, it is used as a study area for Gordon’s other business, Tutor Doctor. Tutor Doctor tutors children and university students for their specific needs. Gordon has access to 100 tutors who are carefully matched to suit the needs of each individual student. The tutoring can be at the student’s home but groups of 46 can be catered for in the Old School House. There will be other live music nights in December so give them a call to check out the schedule. Busy Fun Dog Show at the RB Equestrian Chiltern and Thames Rider Show Photos by Caroline Hamilton
150 entries were counted in the fun dog show that was kindly sponsored by Wheathampstead Equestrian and Pet Superstore GJW Titmuss who supplied the beau ful rose es. Jane Smyth and Clare Turner did a brilliant job in running the show which was ably judged by veterinary surgeon Rachael Harrison Osborne a vet from Wendover Heights Equine. Thank you to Vitalin for supplying the range of dog feeds as prizes. Photographer, Caroline had this to say of the day: It was good to see an employee of the sponsors, GJW Ti muss, Julie McIntyre take 3rd with her Belehin dog in the Veteran class; they have been coming every year that I have a ended. The Best in Show, Bobby Eclgerton’s spaniel won a dog bed and the reserve, Tracy Smith’s dog won a cooling mat. We had a display of different ways of encouraging your dog to wag his tail which Georgia won by singing her dog’s name ‘lulu, lulu, lulu’. As the day got ho er and the legs got wearier, everyone started to sit down which gave me the chance to get super shots of owners and dogs, showing lots of mutual affec on and respect. Clearly a dog is a man’s, or woman’s best friend.

Thought for today... By Phancurio, resident of Markyate Dreams of Power The two images could not possibly be further apart even though they depict the same person. One goes under the name of “Youthful Hercules” and the other is called “Hercules in Trouble”. Hercules (or Herakles as he is known in Greek) is the mythological hero of the GrecianRoman world. Fathered by a god and mothered by a human, he was considered as a semidivine being of superhuman strength who, importantly, was figh ng on the side of a humanity besieged by monsters. These monsters tend to take on terrible and some mes strange shapes and it is not rocket science to find out that these monsters are as mythological as the hero because they are from below and from within. By that I mean they represent human fears and anxie es, but also fantasies of reckless violence and irresponsible rage. In brief, the monsters are visualiza ons of the ever present forces of our rep le brain, wai ng for the right moment to overpower the neocortex and make humans regress and behave less than human. Hercules does the hard and dirty work and keeps civiliza on going by preven ng this invasion from below. Which of us would not wish to have such a strong, godman at our side? Small wonder then, that a developing Roman Empire erected statues of the young Hercules to tell the barbarians beyond the borders what they were up against. But note the transforma on: the monsters are no longer part of us; they are “out there” whereas civiliza on is “here”. It may also not be an accident of history that the statue is now located in the heart of another great empire. We find it in the Metropolitan Museum of New York City. In the twen eth century the United States massproduced popular comicstrips of the Hercules narra ve that went viral in the shape of cartoons and films of the superman genre. Here, the mythology was radically simplified and, as some would say, infan lized. However, in this watered down and pubertyridden shape the narra ve (originally a mirror of human ambivalence) entered young minds both inside and outside the US and thus became part of the construc on of the modern western self. However, for those na ons and popula ons on the outside of this dangerously reduc ve narra ve, life was less pleasant. The superman fantasy is less intriguing for those who have suffered oppression of any kind, whether colonialism, imperialism, or some other “mission accomplished” nonsense imposed by an outside power. Small wonder that the other image, the one showing Hercules in trouble, comes from China. I found it in 2007 in Wuhan’s art museum. The mythological hero of the West, used to smash his way through world history, has got a bloody nose. Art is o en much more prescient than poli cs. So what, if anything, can we learn from this? Well, we need tradi ons. Without tradi ons we do not know who we are and where we go. However, tradi ons
To adver se call 01582 965760
are not just given, they need to be acquired, ever again appropriated, discussed and nego ated. Beware of those who claim the high ground of tradi ons and yet distort them by idolising their own fantasies of power.

To celebrate the launch of the film, in cinemas on 4th November, MedicAnimal has teamed up with Wood Green Animal Charity to spread the word about the amount of animals needing new, loving homes. Based on the number one bestseller, the story tells how one man and his cat found hope on the streets of London. Together, MedicAnimal and Wood Green are pushing towards a world where all pets are well cared for in loving homes. Like Bob, all animals deserve a chance!
James and Bob’s tales of uncondi onal friendship offers an insight into the hardships of both homeless people and animals. When James Bowen found an injured, ginger street cat curled up in the hallway of his sheltered accommoda on, he had no idea just how much his life was about to change. James was living hand to mouth on the streets of London and the last thing he needed was a pet. Yet James couldn't resist helping the strikingly intelligent tom cat, whom he quickly christened Bob. He slowly nursed Bob back to health and then sent the cat on his way, imagining he would never see him again. But Bob had other ideas. Soon the two were inseparable and their diverse, comic and occasionally dangerous adventures would transform both their lives, slowly healing the scars of each other’s troubled pasts.
Furthermore, you pet lovers will get a chance to save your own “Bob or Two”. MedicAnimal will be placing ckets inside every order they send out, with 4 lucky people receiving a ginger cket. This ginger cket en tles the owner to some amazing prizes, such as a weekend in London for you and your pet staying in a swanky hotel in Covent Garden, and ckets to private screenings of the film. For terms and condi ons on how to qualify for a chance to win this great prizes visit: h ps://www.sta cmedia.net and look for Bob or Two.
