The penultimate issue of MiMagazine for me...
Your local magazine for Redbourn, Kinsbourne Green and North Harpenden, Markyate, Flamstead, Caddington, Slip End, Aley Green, Woodside, Kensworth, Whipsnade, Studham, Gaddesden Row.
Dear Readers,
I am letting you in on a secret; after thirty years of publishing magazines, I have decided to cancel the subscriptions to Adobe Creative Suite, Sage One and Dacorum DC and enjoy retirement in sunny Lincolnshire. The Lincolnshire move has already taken place with a move close to the grandchildren made a while ago
It was moving to Markyate in 2008 which gave me the idea to create a community magazine for the surrounding villages, adding the MiMagazine title to our stable (literally because all the other titles were equestrian) of magazines. After ten years of publication, it is time to pack-up and go with a fond farewell to all the people who have been involved with the magazine. It’s been a fun, creative and happy place so I will be sad to leave. The next issue, our
Gaddesden Row posty retires after 24 years
Lindsey’s been the Gaddesden Row village post lady for the last 24 years, having been specially selected by Ray the previous postman. She has delivered letters and parcels through the deepest snow and wettest floods, always with a sunny smile and a cheery ‘hello’.
More than that, she has been a good friend to the village, coping with their strange number system of roads, cottages and villas down Bradden Lane. She was always willing to post for villagers while delivering the mail and she knew all the safe places to leave parcels when they weren’t in. More than knowing all the residents by name , Lindsey was a favourite of all the dogs. Sweep the spaniel, has even broken from his collar to chase her red Post Office van down the road. Even now, Nolly the Labrador awaits by the front door, just in case Lindsey returns. I think the dogs knew that ‘our’ Lindsey was special. To show their appreciation, the villagers arranged a collection. This was presented to her at a tea party at our Village Hall on 29th July and many residents and dogs attended to wish her well on her retirement.
Christmas and New Year issue will be the last with yours truly at the helm.
If there are any people or businesses out there with an attachment to the community combined with media flair, please get in touch as I am looking for someone to acquire MiMagazine as a going concern. Please get in touch asap.
I am now officially a pensioner, having received my first Department of Work and Pensions payment in June and after forty-five years of work it’s time to chillax.
Tributes to staff and contributors to follow next time ...

Police warn residents to be alert to courier fraud
Bedfordshire Police is reminding the public to be vigilant when being asked for personal details by strangers, either by phone or in person, after receiving several reports relating to courier fraud.
New national data has shown that people over the age of 70 are being disproportionately targeted by those carrying out courier fraud, a scam where the perpetrators often employ cunning tactics to deceive victims into believing they are assisting the police or employees from their bank.
This type of fraud typically begins with a phone call or email, where the fraudsters pose as bank officials, police officers, or other authoritative figures.
Since January this year, there have been almost 30 reports of courier fraud purporting to be from the police in Bedfordshire.
Detective Inspector James Day from Bedfordshire Police’s Serious Fraud Investigation Unit said: “Unfortunately this is a very common crime type in which the perpetrators prey on the elderly and vulnerable. They end up losing valuable amounts of money and savings, which in turn leads to upset and worry.
“Please remember that the police will never ask you to withdraw money for them or call you to ask for your bank details, and never ever share your debit or credit card with anyone else. They will also never ask for your jewellery to keep it safe.
“We would advise that you always check the caller’s credentials. Never click any email link you are unsure of or respond to any unsolicited emails or calls.
“If you take a call from someone who you believe is not genuine, hang up, and contact either Action Fraud or the police. Where possible use a different phone to make the call, in case the fraudulent caller is still on the line.
“If you do give your details to someone who you later believe is not credible, it’s important that you contact the bank immediately.

‘Stop idling start saving’
...say Central Beds CC
“Every minute counts” is the message from Central Beds CC as they launch a campaign urging drivers to switch off their engines when they are stationary.
The campaign comes after the survey last year, which 1,687 people responded to, which revealed almost half of Central Bedfordshire residents believe engine idling has a negative impact on their health.
Leaving a car running while stationary, known as engine idling, reduces air quality and, as emissions stay near the car, those nearest to you are most affected. Exhaust fumes are especially harmful to children, who are closer to car exhaust pipes, and older people who are more likely to have cardiovascular illnesses.
Idle engines are also wasteful because the car is using fuel unnecessarily. Contrary to a common misconception, idling for more than 10 seconds uses more fuel and gives off more emissions than stopping and restarting your engine. Idling can also damage car engines over time, creating a build-up of carbon which makes them work less efficiently and wear out faster.
Other results from the 2022 survey reveal:
• 88% agree that engine idling has a negative impact on air quality
• Just under half (49%) say it has a negative impact on their physical health
• Almost a third (32%) believe their day-to-day activities were affected by the problem
• Nearly two thirds (63%) say that people are not generally aware of the issue
• Idling outside schools and shops were highlighted as the problem areas.

Home Counties Loft Ladders, Quality You Can Trust!
These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all?
That’s where Home Counties Loft Ladders come in.
The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50sqft of boarding and a light - all fully fitted in less than a day from just £444! But it’s not just the affordability of the package that makes Home Counties Loft Ladders stand out, as manager Jamie Oakley explains:
‘Our watchwords are Quality, Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen, so our customers are assured of the best job. Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford.
Our business relies on referrals and we get a huge amount of our calls from people who have been referred to us by our existing
customers - that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles. At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every
installation we carry out!’
So, if you want to make use of your loft space, call Jamie free on 0808 301 9557 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!

Driving in your senior years
You may have many years of experience behind the wheel, you might have a clean driving licence and the maximum no claims bonus on your insurance policy but you must be aware that advancing years can affect the way you drive your vehicle.
You and your driving licence - when am I too old to drive?
There are over five million drivers who are over 70 years old. Your licence will not be automatically renewed when you reach 70 years old. You should have regular checkups with your GP to see if you are still up to the demands of the road. There is no upper age limit for driving a car. All drivers have to renew their driving licence when they reach the age of 70 and every three years thereafter. The renewal form will be sent to you automatically by the DVLA 90 days before your 70th birthday. You can also renew your driving licence for free 90 days before your 70th birthday. When completing the form you will need to declare any medical conditions you have and confirm that you meet the eyesight requirements for driving.
Visit Olderdrivers.co.uk for more details on the eyesight requirements for driving.
Am I flt enough to drive?
Each of us is personally responsible for making sure that we are fit to drive. Some physical or medical conditions must by law, be reported to the DVLA. They will then send you
a confidential medical form, asking you to describe your medical condition in greater detail and to agree to getting a medical report from your GP. The latest General Medical Council guidance is that disclosure of personal information about a patient without consent may be justified in the public interest if failure to disclose may expose others to a risk of death or serious harm. This means that although it is your responsibility to disclose your health to the DVLA, the GP may believe that it is in the public interest to disclose on your behalf. Doctors should seek the patient’s consent to disclosure if practicable and consider any reasons given for refusal.
The following health conditions are identified by the DVLA as requiring a three year renewal of your licence along with a GP confirmation of fitness to drive safely or a medical examination:
• diabetes or taking insulin
• syncope (fainting)
• heart conditions (including atrial fibrillation and pacemakers)
• sleep apnoea
• epilepsy
• stroke
• glaucoma
There are also some prescription drugs and over-the-counter medicines that can have an effect on the skills needed to drive safely, so you should check with your GP or Pharmacist that it’s still safe for you to drive.
Having a disability or medical condition does not necessarily mean that your driving licence will be affected.
The things to think about are:
• frailty and how an accident could affect you
• tiredness; don’t have long journeys at times you get the most tired and after meals
How to stay safe as an older driver
According to data gathered by the Older Drivers Task Force, “drivers over the age of 70 are less likely to be involved in crashes involving speed, loss of control or alcohol”. Despite these encouraging signs, there are extra steps you could take to further extend and enjoy your driving life, such as:
• making modifications to your car to assist any visual or physical ailments
• if you have difficulty while

The award for Best Front Garden was retained by Chris and Maureen Venstone and Jack & Lena Davis were popular winners of the Best Allotment. However, the star of the Show was Geoffrey Stafford, who won the Best Fruit, Best Vegetable and Best Flower awards, which not surprisingly resulted in him walking away with the trophy as the overall winner on the day.

Majestic Trees’ Eliot Barden wins International Young Grower of the Year
Majestic Trees is thrilled to announce that Eliot Barden, the AfterCare, Apprentice and Training Manager has won the International Young Grower of the Year, against a field of worldwide candidates at the AIPH conference held at IPM in Essen, Germany. This great honour follows Eliot winning the UK Young Grower of the Year in 2022.
Do you need help with your preschool children?
Kensworth Village Hall was awash with colour on 3rd September for the annual show. Despite difficult conditions of late for gardeners, over 300 exhibits were displayed and attracted many compliments from those that crowded into the Village Hall for the presentations, which were made by Andrew Gibbons of Ashtons Estate Agents, who kindly sponsored the Show.
Not for the first time, Geoffrey Stafford walked away with the major awards as the Overall Winner and also for the Best Vegetables on display. Other winners
Emma Dick (Best Flowers), David Foster (Best Catherine Porter (Flower Arrangement), (Cookery & Craft), Anna Prosceinska
Ella Rice (Children’s Categories).
Eliot joined Majestic Trees four and a half years ago after completing five years of studies; first his Kew Gardens apprenticeship then his Kew Diploma, both achieved with Distinction. Majestic Trees has always believed in hiring the best talent, as proven by the current management team of five women and three men, some of whom have been with the company since its beginning. Adding Eliot to further develop our team and provide even better AfterCare service to our customers was a no-brainer. He has gone on to develop the Majestic team by adding apprenticeships and training to his remit.
The award for the Best Front Garden went to Dave Gingell, whilst Best Allotment Awards were given to Graham Lee and Sharon Hutchins.
We will shortly commence the planning process for the 2023 Show and welcome anyone who might be interested in joining our small
Majestic Trees has previously won the UK Nursery Stock Grower of the Year award a record four times; in the AIPH International competition the Silver Rose twice in both Essen in 2016 and Xian, China in 2011.

Committee member Jenny Gilmore says...
“Thanks everyone who came and supported the 6th Redbourn Classics on the Common on Saturday 2nd September including the 125 volunteers who helped with setting up and running the show, and the sponsors M. O’Brien, Redbourn Auto Solutions, Ashtons, Farr Brew, Palmers, Majestic Trees, and St Albans Van Hire. Crowds of visitors enjoyed the great music from The Barn-Ettes and Missing the Ferry and the fun fair and train rides were popular with the children. Delicious food and drink topped it, making for a party atmosphere all afternoon.
“This year’s show raised £19,500 which has been given to Redbourn Community Group, The Friends of St Mary’s for the conservation of the church building, and to the Village Hall. This is the most ever raised by Redbourn Classics and makes a big difference to these charities. The Village Museum benefitted too with a display of new electric vehicles by Palmers, one of the sponsors, and the proceeds from the Woolsey family’s miniature train rides were also donated to the Museum.
“Twenty village groups and local charities including the Library, Scouts, Guides, Redbourn Players, WI, Redbourn in Bloom, U3A, Friends of the Nickey Line and Repair Shed took up the offer of having a free pitch at the show to raise funds or to promote their activity, making Redbourn Classics the largest fundraiser of the year for many local groups.
“We look forward to putting on another great day for the community next year and will announce the date soon. If you would like to get involved, please get in touch using the Contact Form on the website. www.redbournclassics.co.uk.”

To Dye or Not to Dye
It’s a dilemma faced by most people of a certain age. Do you let your hair go grey or reach for the dye bottle? Grey hair is one of the strongest visual indicatiors of age and even if you’ve managed to avoid some of the other obvious signs, such as wrinkles and an expanding waistline, your hair colour will give you away every time.
If you’re uneasy about the prospect of growing older, then the chances are that you will do whatever it takes to retain your youthful hair colour, even if it means regular trips to the hairdressers or struggling to make sense of an off-the-shelf dye kit.
Why we go grey
Our natural hair colour comes from a pigment known as melanin, produced by the hair follicles. As we age our follicles produce less melanin, resulting in grey and silver tones. The age at which you turn grey and the amount of hair affected depends largely upon your genes, but the average person will spot their first grey hair in their 30s and most people will have noticeable grey strands by their 40s. By the age of fifty, fifty per cent of people will have gone grey.
The aging process also makes your hair follicles and the oil glands in your scalp shrink, resulting in hair that is thinner, dryer and more brittle. People of both
sexes may also lose some hair as they grow older. Although we tend to think of hair loss as an exclusively male preserve, women can also lose volume as a result of hormonal changes during the menapause.
Grey is the new black
Women may also feel under greater pressure to keep up a youthful appearance. While an older woman who refuses to colour her hair may be described as ‘brave’, a grey haired man enjoys the much more flattering label of ‘silver fox’. But a new fashion promises to make grey hair shades chic for both sexes, whatever their ages: young, hip celebrities such as Rihanna, Zayn Malik and Nicole Ritchie have recently hit the headlines for adopting silver grey hair shades and the trend for grey colourants is growing.
Why more of us are refusing to dye
It’s ironic that while younger people are now choosing to colour their hair in grey and silver shades, many older people are turning away from hair dyes. While there is no single cause for this change of attitude, there are several reasons why the number of cheerleaders for being ‘grey and proud’ may be on the rise.

major re-think by manufacturers in the 1980s, when research revealed that substances used in hair dye at that time caused cancer in mice. While modern studies have shown that prolonged exposure to hair dye chemicals may give professional hairdressers an increased chance of contracting cancer, no concrete evidence has yet been found to suggest that hair dyes are unsafe for regular personal use. The jury is still out on the risks faced by today’s consumers but even a tiny seed of doubt may be enough to persuade some people to stop colouring their hair.
We can’t turn back the clock
As we age, our skin colour alters, picking up more yellow tones. This means that a mature skin tone may no longer look as good against a vibrant, youthful hair shade (although if you do decide to colour your hair a professional hairdresser will be able to advise on the best shades to use). Because aging hair is dryer and more brittle, the chemicals in permanent dyes can leave the hair looking dull and lifeless, so a desire for healthier looking hair - whatever its colour, may ultimately persuade us to let nature take its course.
Role models lead the way
Back in the day it was an unspoken rule that any celebrity over 40 should automatically dye their hair. These days, however, we’re surrounded by high profile figures sporting grey hairstyles - think of male celebritiess such as Gary Lineker, Jose Mourinho and George Clooney and female high rollers like Vogue’s Anna Wintour, actress Meryl Streep and IMF leader Christine Lagarde. Far from hinting at age and infirmity, their grey hairstyles exude power and charisma.
These days we are all living longer, in better health, and it may simply be that the trend towards accepting grey hair shows we are more relaxed about the aging process, living life to the full instead of hiding away. To quote celebrity hairstylist and founder of Twitter’s @thegreyglammovement, Cynthia Alvarez: “Grey is the new black. The colour has taken on an entirely new life and meaning - today grey is beautiful, sexy, chic, fabulousi!”

Experienced Driver Assessments
If it is a long time since you passed your driving test and you would like an objective assessment of your current driving skills, you might like to have an experienced Driver Assessment (EDA).
What is an EDA and who is it for?
An EDA may be useful for:
• people who wish to continue driving, but who feel slightly apprehensive about driving on today’s roads; or
• older people wishing to reassure themselves and their loved ones that they can still drive safely.
An EDA is not a test; it is an assessment which will provide an objective and confidential report on your driving ability.
The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) offers Experienced Driver Assessments.
What does an EDA involve?
The assessment will involve an hour’s drive in your own car, at a time and place convenient to you. A qualified driver who is registered with RoSPA will accompany you during the assessment. Afterwards, you will be given a confidential verbal and written report and a certificate of completion.
There is no pass or fail to the assessment, but your report may include suggestions on how you can improve specific driving skills and your all round driving ability.

Kensworth Flower and Vegetable Show
On the hottest day of the year 9th September, the Village Hall was awash with colour as local residents again produced a wonderful display of exhibits for the annual Flower & Vegetable Show. Although certain categories may have been affected by the recent spike in weather conditions, there were also fewer entries in categories such as flower arranging, baking and craft items. The Committee always welcomes feedback to improve the show and is also keen to recruit new committee members if any volunteers are out there.
Sue Moynes pipped Geoffrey Stafford to take the major trophy, but Geoffrey won the best preserve with his pickled shallots. Other prize winners were Charlotte Bassett (vegetables), Shirley Hull (flower arrangement), Jack and Lena Davis (fruit), Maureen Brinklow (cake) Anne McDonald (craft) and Jessica Stafford (children’s section). Prizes were also awarded to Tiffany Rischiling and Kerri O’Brien for best allotments and to Brian and Mel Davis for best front garden. The prizes were presented by Andy Young of Ashtons Estate Agents who continues to sponsor the show. The Committee would like to thank them, together with the businesses who kindly donated raffle prizes.
Thanks to the team who made this possible: David Manton, Pat Mitchell and Sylvia Inns plus other hardworking volunteers. There is a full album of photos from the day here:

Are you a Classic fanatic?
What classifies as a ‘Classic’ Car?
It’s a great question and the answer is not straightforward. It’s not just about age, but also rarity, historical significance, and cultural relevance. It also differs on region and country as well as from insurer to MOT classification!
What is termed as a classic car is therefore open to interpretation. So, below we can only broadly categorise them, recognising there is significant overlap between them:
Year Classification Broad description
Pre-1905 Veteran Cars
1905-1918 Edwardian Cars
Anything pre 1905 would be considered in this category, although some use the term to cover cars up to 1918.
The high-wheel motor buggy design which resembled horse drawn carriages prior to 1900 was gradually abandoned. These cars are characterised by the widespread use of brass in the vehicle’s fixtures including lighting, radiators, door handles and frames.
1919-1930 Vintage Cars
These cars are often considered collectors’ items and are often quite expensive dependent on their condition. Vintage cars are characterised by their simple design and lack of modern features. Vintage cars were also produced in much smaller numbers making them rarer and more valuable.
1931-1945 Post Vintage Thoroughbred Cars
Certain makes of quality and sporting cars built in the years between 1930 and World War II
19401950’s Classic Car Classics can come from any era, but they’re usually associated with the golden age of automotive design – typically spanning from 1940’s to 1960’s.
An older car that is cherished for its style, design, and long-standing appeal. They have an enduring quality, meaning they’ll continue to be sought after by collectors and enthusiasts for years to come. They have a timelessness about them.
Features no longer seen in modern cars such as chrome detailing, curved lines, and round headlights. They have unique design elements, such as fins or sweeping curves. They may also have historical or cultural significance such as being associated with a particular period or celebrity.
Pre-1978 Antique Car
This is a term used by the Antique Automobile Club of America to describe cars of at least 45 years old and includes cars, trucks, trains, and bicycles!
Typically noted for their simplicity and lack of modern features. They may also have unique design elements that were popular during their era such as wooden spoke wheels or hand-crank starters.
1980-2000 Modern Classic Cars
Modern classics are different in their design, components, handling, and safety. Technologically, newer vehicles usually contain a central computer, sensors, and sophisticated systems. Modern engines are much smarter, smaller, more powerful, and more efficient.

Remember your Dad’s car? If you think hard enough you can still smell the interior, know which songs were playing on the radio and remember all its quirks whether it was a secret pocket or a particular sequence to start it up! Classic cars certainly evoke strong emotions. We’ve just had a summer full of classic car events, such as Redbourn Classics, which so many people attend and gaze at yesteryear, marvelling at some stunning restorations. So, what makes us so interested in them and why are these events so popular?
Understanding the difference between these types of cars can help us all appreciate their unique qualities and their place in automotive history, but its significance is less to do with classifying cars, but in their overall desirability to collectors and enthusiasts.
A vehicle’s classification becomes important when considering the practicalities around MOT, Tax and Insurance. And it is no surprise that different bodies classify them differently.
For instance, HMRC considers a classic car to be at least 15 years old, with a market value greater than the list price and at least £15,000.
MOT Exemption
Classic cars are MOT exempt if:
• The vehicle was built or first registered more than 40 years ago
• No substantial changes have been made to the vehicle in the last 30 years, (ie, replacing the chassis, body, axles, or engine to change the way the vehicle works)
However, the vehicle must be safe to drive and in a roadworthy condition, otherwise you risk fines of up to £2,500 and three penalty points against your license. So, keeping your classic roadworthy is as paramount as a modern car.
By Melanie Wooding Jones Redbourn Auto Solutions, caring for you and your car
Even if the MOT is not a legal requirement, you can still get it tested if you wish. However, most owners prefer to check over the more common issues themselves or take it for a pre-MOT check or continue to have it regularly serviced as parts are still prone to corrosion and failure even when not in use.
Vehicle Tax Exemption
You will be exempt from vehicle tax if your vehicle is 40 years old on the 1st January of that year and will take effect from the April. ie, a vehicle registered before 1st January 1983 will be exempt from 1st April 2023. This does not apply if the vehicle is used commercially or for hire and reward.
You will have to apply for a tax vehicle exemption (also known as ‘putting your car in the historic tax class’ or ‘having it declared a Vehicle of Historic Interest’ (VHI). This can be done at the Post Office with your log book (V5C), a valid MOT certificate or a completed V112 form showing that your vehicle is exempt from the MOT check.
If you continue to use the vehicle on the public highway, you will need to still register for tax even though you do not have to pay.
Insurance
The view of a specialist classic car insurer is that the vehicle is kept in pristine condition and only driven a few days a year and usually in good weather. They suspect it is kept in a safe location to protect its value. Their view of the driver is that they are usually experienced and take great care of their car and the way it is driven.
These assumptions mean classic cars are considered lower risk and the insurance premiums reflect this. In fact, The Money Expert suggests that it is often less than half the price.

(continued from previous page)
Insurers define a classic car according to how it’s used and kept. To make the most of lower premiums, generally your car should be:
• Be more than 15 years old.
• Driven less than 2,000-5,000 miles a year.
• Kept in mint condition and stored in a garage, drive, or specialist lock-up.
• Used as a second car and not as a daily runaround.
• Owned and driven by someone usually 25 or older.
A policy will cover all the usual risks, plus cover while it is restored, displayed at a vintage car show (including public liability), used on a track day (if needed), and for travel abroad.
Membership of a classic car club can bring down your insurance premium as the majority enjoy discounts. It’s also appealing to be able to discuss your vehicle with other enthusiasts who will exchange ideas, stories and know where to get those all-important parts should one of yours fail.
Should your car become a write off, normally insurance companies use the market value to pay out. But classic cars are not that easy to value, so you agree a value before the policy starts known as the ‘agreed valuation’.
Modifications on these cars are usually to preserve the car or to retain its roadworthiness. They are very rarely to make it go faster, so usually push up the premium as the car becomes more valuable and desirable. A high quality respray could push up the value by £2,000-3,000.
Why do people own Classic Cars?
For some it is an investment in a piece of history. For others it brings back memories from the past.
They are often easier and cheaper to maintain than a newer car and have a sense of character about them. For many they are second cars that are kept in pristine condition and stored appropriately for the winter in readiness for the many sociable classic car shows that take place during the summer months.
The only difficulty may be in sourcing parts and mending, or finding replacement plastic that become
brittle over time. During the winter, the cars need to be prepared properly for storing to avoid damage and corrosion.
Whatever the reason, you can be sure it will be a source of great pride.
Why are there so many classic car shows?
For many, it’s an irresistible step into the past. A chance to look at the curvature of the body panels, the highly polished brass, steel spokes, clean engines, or fascinating modifications. For some it’s an excuse to get out into the sunshine and meet people and exchange stories.
It promotes a sense of nostalgia, and you can often hear ‘I remember these, my dad had one when I was a child’… and then they’ll go on to tell you about a day out in the car and all that happened that day. The conversation ends, and you both end up with a warm smile and newfound knowledge that at some point this car was at the centre of that person’s world and, by displaying it, has allowed them to recreate all the feelings they had when they owned one. The memories are astonishingly vivid and well worth listening to.
Owners and enthusiasts alike come together to marvel at pieces of history, sharing their pride and joy and restoration journeys with others… and if you’re lucky, you may even win a prize for best in show!
Each classic car show will have its own rules and regulations on the type of vehicle they would consider exhibiting, so it is always worth checking first.
Since its inception in 2017, we have been very proud sponsors of Redbourn Classics Motor Show and we also dedicate our time as part of the organising committee. We meet all year round to produce a fantastic family event. The event continues to go from strength to strength and is an incredibly valued fundraiser for the village. Herts 10K is back
The popular Herts 10K race in aid of Rennie Grove Peace Hospice Care will return to Rothamsted Research this year on Sunday, 8th October 2023. The annual mixed terrain race is voted one of the top 30 races in the country thanks to its beautiful course and community spirit.
Each year new runners and regulars alike gather at the start line to tackle the course. Whether motivated by the charity cause, the chance to run through the picturesque course or the opportunity to beat a PB, runners are guaranteed a great day out.
This year, runners who have taken part in the event before are invited to wear a previous year’s event t-shirt. Tracey Hancock, Director of Fundraising at Rennie Grove Peace, explains:
“The event was founded in 2006 by Rennie Grove patron and local businessman, Lawrence Levy. Since then, it has amassed a loyal band of running fans who like to return, year after year.
“October’s race will be our first Herts 10K since merging with Peace Hospice Care to create Rennie Grove Peace Hospice Care. We’re excited to make the event even bigger and better, while also paying homage to its roots and heritage as a much-loved local event. By donning a race t-shirt from years gone by, runners can show their support for the event through the years while also supporting our sustainability ambitions by reusing an event t-shirt rather than taking a new one this year.”
One runner who donned a vintage vest for last year’s race was John McCormack. He was taking part in the Herts 10K over 6,000 miles away from his home in South Africa, while visiting his daughter, Tarryn, who lives in St Albans. He had taken part in the first race in 2006 when he was in the country for the birth of his first grandchild and was proud to sport his shirt from that occasion while completing the 2022 race.
To sign up to this year’s event, visit renniegrovepeace.org/herts10k

Eliot joined Majestic Trees four and a half years ago after completing five years of studies; first his Kew Gardens apprenticeship then his Kew Diploma, both achieved with Distinction. Majestic Trees has always believed in hiring the best talent, as proven by the current management team of five women and three men, some of whom have been with the company since its beginning. Adding Eliot to further develop our team and provide even better AfterCare service to our customers was a no-brainer. He has gone on to develop the Majestic team by adding apprenticeships and training to his remit.
August, when the judges will be touring the village. Judging for Anglia in Bloom will be in July (date to be announced). Besides colourful planting, both sets of judges will be looking for evidence of all-year-round activity, voluntary effort, local council and business support, environmental awareness, sustainability and the involvement of all age-groups, especially children and young people. We aim to have the village looking at its best, with spectacular summer planting – our suggested colour scheme for this is ALL SHADES OF RED – whilst showing them examples of all of the above, and introducing them to some of our valiant volunteers
Not for the first time, Geoffrey Stafford walked away with the major awards as the Overall Winner and also for the Best Vegetables on display. Other winners included Emma Dick (Best Flowers), David Foster (Best Fruit), Catherine Porter (Flower Arrangement), Jenny Dries (Cookery & Craft), Anna Prosceinska (Preserves) and Ella Rice (Children’s Categories).
