ello and welcome to the Sheffield World Championship edition of Cue the event magazine!

So the big one is nearly upon us. The crème de la crème of all snooker tournaments. Who will pick up the silverware this year? Judging by recent tournaments we can all expect some serious, quality action at the wonderful Crucible Theatre! In this issue, we have all the usual goodies on where to stay, dine, and fun things to do whilst away from the baize. We have a great interview with the lovely Tom Ford in Cue & A, who provides some interesting answers to our questions. Having attended the Gibraltar open, and being fortunate enough to have stayed on the outstanding Sunborn Yacht Hotel, we are giving a little insight into how truly amazing it is. What a tournament it was! We were so happy for Robert Milkin’s win - he so deserved it and we hope there will be many more to come. We will be rooting for you at the Crucible Bob! Enjoy!! Interview... with a player Q: How many hours on average do you practice a day/week and do you ever get tired of putting in the practice? A: I only maybe do a couple of hours a day as I’m not a big practice player. I don’t enjoy the game that much but I do try and play people when I can, and then I would most likely do about 4 hours, as I do the school run for my little boy, Jack aged 6. Q: Like all professional snooker players you must spend a lot of time “living out of a suitcase.“ Do you ever get fed up with that, or do you accept that “It comes with the job“? A: I used to like spending time away, but I do get fed up with it now. Q: Which is your favourite venue to play at? A: I used to like York when it was only a two table set up, but most of the venues are bad now unless you are in the main arena. In some venues you can play in a different part of the building and not even see the main tables. Q: Do you prefer playing on the TV tables, or do you sometimes feel less pressure on an outside table? Does playing in front of the TV and a crowd inspire you to play to your best? A: I love playing on the main table but unless you are playing Ronnie, Judd, Selby, Higgins or Robertson you don’t get to play on there very often. The cameras and crowd don’t bother me, they used to, but you get used to them. Q: What nation that doesn´t currently compete in snooker would you like to see? A: I’d love to see the Americans come over, or hopefully we could get a tournament over there in the future.

8 I CUE the event magazine the interview 4pg_Tom Ford.indd 4

I’d love to see the Americans come over, or hopefully we could get a tournament over there in the future.

Q: What are your views on the snooker ‘dress code’, and do you think it should be more relaxed at all events like the Home nations and Shoot Out? A: I think we should have a couple of tournaments relaxed and just wear a polo T-shirt, as I think the standard would be better if we are more relaxed. Q: What was your path to becoming a professional snooker player, and what initially sparked your interest in the game? A: My older brother used to play my dad on a little table at home with folding legs, and I used to sit there and watch. I kept bugging them to let me have a go at age 3. Finally they let me have a go and they were amazed that I could do it without telling me what to do. I then played on a full size table at 8 years old at Willie Thorne’s snooker club where Willie´s brother, Malcolm Thorne, let me play with my dad. Q: You are in the final of the World Championship - who would you most like to be your opponent? A: If I was in the final of the world championships I’d like to play an amateur so I had a very good chance of winning. I wouldn’t want Ronnie, as the crowd would all be willing him to win ha ha! Q: Who, in your opinion, is the greatest player of all time and why? A: Ronnie is the best, and it’s not even a debate! Q: You reached the last 16 in this years Gibraltar Open. What did you think of the new venue, the Europa Point Sports Complex compared to the previous venue, the Victoria Stadium? A: The new venue is great. I love going there as Gibraltar is lovely. It’s just a shame that the prize money is so bad for that event.

“ At the heart of our values is our commitment to never give up on any cat, and never to put a healthy cat to sleep. ” The World Snooker Championship has been putting Sheffield on the map for 45 years now, but there’s an even older institution for which the city can be proud: The Sheffield Cats Shelter was founded in 1897, making it one of the oldest pet shelters in the United Kingdom.

On occasion some of our cats have complex or ongoing medical needs, and these costs can add significantly to our annual expenditure. That’s why we’re so grateful for all those who head to our website and make regular or one-off donations. We also receive donations of cat toys, bedding and food at our shelter; our cats and kitties are especially happy at this, because they get through up to 70 pouches of cat food every day (not to mention biscuits and cat treats). At the heart of our values is our commitment to never give up on any cat, and never to put a healthy cat to sleep. We work hard to find a perfect new owner for each cat that comes

“ The cats in our shelter are here for many different reasons, but they all deserve a break. Your donation could make all the difference.” 8 Take Frankie and Dino; at 17 years of age they were the oldest residents in our

shelter, but still full of love and life. They were brought to us after their owner passed away, and we’re pleased to say that they’ve now found their forever home where they can enjoy a life of retirement and luxury with two very loving new owners. At the other end of the age scale is our gorgeous ginger battler Benny. He’s just five months old, and has had a tough start to life. Benny had been living as a feral cat on a Sheffield allotment, and was brought to us with a horrific leg injury. His leg had to be amputated to save his life, and he also needed further treatment for a virus he was suffering from. Benny needed lots of care and lots of

Frankie and Dino

love, and he got plenty of both from his foster carer Becki, who is also the Cat Welfare Manager here at the shelter. Becki says: “Benny is a little trooper and is coming on leaps and bounds – he certainly won’t let having three legs hold him back.” The cost of Benny’s treatment so far is over a thousand pounds, but we remain committed to ensuring that he, and cats like him, are given all the time, care and help they need. With the support of our great donors, volunteers and the people of Sheffield, we’ll find Benny and our other cats a great new home for life. Sheffield loves snooker, and it loves cats too. The cats in our shelter are here for many different reasons, but they all deserve a break. Your donation could make all the difference.

The Review... Sunborn Gibraltar 35 Ocean Village Promenade I Gibraltar I GX11 1AA

Nestled in the Ocean Village Marina, Sunborn Gibraltar is the world’s only permanently moored 5 star super yacht hotel. With a total of 189 luxury guest hotel rooms and suites, and featuring a spa and casino on board, it is the epitome of luxury. During the Gibraltar Snooker Open, the team at Cue the Event magazine were lucky enough to stay on board. And we enjoyed every minute of it!

What we loved about Sunborn... Review based on the Rock Suite ON ARRIVAL Upon entering the fabulous foyer of the Sunborn in reception we were greeted by very welcoming, attentive staff and offered a choice of complimentary water, orange juice or a glass of sparkling wine, which was a very nice touch!

THE ROOM The Rock Suite consists of a large, spacious sitting area, full of light, and with incredible views of the marina and sea. A stylish sofa sits opposite a large TV complete with all the channels you need. Complimentary tea , coffee and water are provided including a Lavazza coffee machine. A very well stocked mini bar sits alongside with a selection of wines, beers, crisps and chocolate available to purchase. Through to the stunning bedroom sits a very large and

beautifully dressed bed with bedside furniture and a large, spacious sliding-door wardrobe. Inside you will find ample coat hangers, a safe and beautiful quality dressing gowns and slippers. Various “comfort” boxes are provided with shoe shine and grooming items. The absolutely stunning bathroom features a large bath, washbasin, separate shower and separate toilet. A generous supply of Molten Brown bathing products are supplied along with a significant number of delightful, soft and fluffy white towels. The whole suite is very beautifully furnished and artistically decorated with some wonderful wall art. State of the art wall and telephone control panels automatically control the curtains, lighting, heating etc. We loved this!

A beautiful terrace with a stylish sofa, table, chairs and potted plants is a wonderful place to sit and look down on the activity below. Quality screens are located each side of the terrace ensuring complete privacy from adjoining terraces The suite was absolutely spotless and pristine. And considering Gibraltar had been hit with a Calima (sand storm) only days before, it was incredible how clean the outside area was.

AMENITIES The Barbary restaurant and bar is a very spacious and relaxing area with fabulous views from the 7th deck. Very reasonably priced drinks with great service and a wonderful atmosphere. The casino on board is now mainly a poker players paradise with some slot machines and a very stylish bar with very reasonably priced drinks once again. For a bigger choice of casino games the Casino Admiral is positioned just over the road. We didn’t have time to try the Spa due to our time constraints but it looked fabulous.

BREAKFAST A wide and varied selection of cooked breakfast and continental

breakfast items and fruits ,cereals, and yogurt and not forgetting the delicious homemade smoothies.

THE STAFF Cannot fault the friendliness, attentiveness and professionalism of all staff we encountered on board. They could not do enough for you.

LOCATION Ideally located in the idyllic Ocean Village Marina, you are close to an abundance of superb bars and restaurants. At night it is like a fairytale with beautiful lights everywhere you look. The Sunborn is only a few minutes walk to Casemates Square, where a plentiful range of shops, bars, restaurants and the bus station can be found. We could not find a single negative about the Sunborn. The whole experience was one of high luxury in super stylish surroundings with wonderful food, drinks and the attention of the wonderful staff. 5 stars aren’t nearly enough to cover how amazing this place is and we cannot wait to go back and experience it all over again. We highly recommend the Sunborn to anyone considering a stay in fabulous Gibraltar.

Artist’s Spotlight

Les Barton

L

Art

es Barton has had a very successful career in property and land and has a great passion for snooker. He has been great friends with all the snooker players for over 3O years and is a regular at all the tournaments. A little secret that will surprise everyone within the snooker world is that Les has a hidden talent - he has a

passion for art and in our opinion here at Cue The Event magazine, he is a mighty fine artist! Born and raised in Liverpool, Les has always enjoyed going to art galleries and looking at other people’s artwork, but had not painted himself since leaving school in the 1970’s. Art was always his favourite subject and even in those days he used to find himself getting lost in his work.

sSUMMER BREEZE Acrylic on Canvas

When he retired a few years ago, he was walking past his local community hall, and for some reason he was drawn in and found an art class in progress. And that’s how it all began and he has never looked back! Interested in form, shape and colour, Les has a very contemporary graphic style, which he is continually developing. He has had a string of commissions and has exhibited locally in Liverpool. Les says he feels he was subconsciously inspired and influenced by the great artist Damien Hirst. Les has known Damien for a number of years and after showing him some of his work Damien suggested he should use bigger canvases, so Les took Damien’s advice on board. Les has two large scale pieces of work: Golden Waves and Summer Breeze. Measuring 183cm x 122cm, they are his biggest pieces to date. He plans to create more work on large canvases, finding them to be a great challenge. He states it is very satisfying to stand back and look at what he has achieved in just a few years. He loves to see other people getting enjoyment from his artwork. We know what you mean Les!!
