Interview... with a player
Q: How many hours on average do you practice a day/week and do you ever get fed up of putting in the practice? A: 3-4 hours practice, either on my own or with another player. And yes, very occasionally I get fed up! Q: You were a keen amateur golfer, what made you decide to concentrate more on snooker than golf? A: I started playing snooker first. Then in the summers I would play golf and my coach at the time Joe Lazarus encouraged that. I got my handicap down pretty low. Then Barry Hearn came along and we started having snooker events every week – that ruined my golf! Q: Which is your favourite venue to play at? A: The Crucible, with Alexandra Palace a close second. Q: The player’s seats on the outside tables are sometimes very different to the ones on the TV tables in terms of style and comfort. What do you think to this? Here at Cue the event magazine we think some look like waiting room chairs at the dentist!! A: I hadn’t really noticed that. In any match I hope not to spend too long in my chair! It’s always better to get on to the TV tables. Q: What music do you listen to? And who is the best - The Beatles or the Stones!? At the moment I am listening to a lot of 1980’s and 90’s music. I prefer the Beatles to the Stones.
John Donaldson who painted a portrait of me winning the Masters. He is fantastic. Q: You have yet to achieve Triple Crown status. How important is it for you to win the UK Championships and gain the right to wear an embroidered crown on your waistcoat? A: It would mean everything to me to get that Crown on to my waistcoat, it would cap off my career. I would rather win a second world title than a UK title, but still to win the UK would be amazing.
Q: Are you a fan of art and if so, who is your favourite artist? A: The only one I know is
Q: Do you prefer playing on the TV tables, or do you sometimes feel less pressure on an outside table? Or does a crowd really gee you up and help you play to your best? A: I love playing in front of a crowd so I always want to be on the TV tables.
Q: Following on from question 9, how difficult was it to play under Covid conditions? A: It was hard. It just felt like a practice session and the matches didn’t seem as important. Q: Which famous celebrity would make a good referee!? A: I can’t think of one. Definitely not Mike Tyson! Q: You always seem a very calm player, but do you ever have feelings of tension, anger or boredom when you are watching your opponent play for a prolonged period? If so, how do you manage to deal with it? A: I get nervous at the start of a match, I might look calm but I am shaking. Once I win a frame I settle down and enjoy it. Q: What’s your idea of a great night out!? A: A nice meal, a couple of bottles of red wine and then a quiet club.

Supporting good causes Save Gibraltar Street Cats
Making a difference to the lives of the street cats on the rock
T
he charity Save Gibraltar Street Cats was founded by Susan in the latter half of 2014 for the benefit of street
cats in Gibraltar in need of care, and to relieve the suffering. Initially, it was, in particular, to trap, neuter/spay, return and maintain whenever possible as a way of controlling the cat population in Gibraltar and to ensure the colonies were kept as healthy as possible. Our aim to promote humane behaviour by providing appropriate care, protection, treatment and security for cats which are in need of care and attention when they are sick, mistreated and where possible to educate the public in general cat welfare. To date , over 95% of all the cat colonies in Gibraltar have been successfully put through our T.N.R.M program, and around 500 kittens have been removed from the streets and adopted. We hold meetings with government departments (always a challenge) and in 2018 we lobbied and were successful

...people should not forget how special Hendry was. He paved the way for the era we have now, making it more attacking, and his winning attitude was incredible.
”
Q: When you are commentating on a match, are there times when you have a favourite player that you want to win? How difficult is it for you to remain unbiased when you are commentating? A: No, I never want a particular player to win. I think it’s very important to be impartial. It’s obvious to viewers when a commentator is not. The only performance you should care about is your own. Of course, there are players you are happy to see winning because it might be they’ve been through a bad spell or they are capturing their first title, but you have to show respect to their opponent as well. You sometimes get caught up in what’s happening but you have to remember that both players will have family and friends supporting them and they expect you not to show any favouritism.
Q: In a Q&A you did with Pro Snooker Blog several years ago you said that you thought John Higgins, Mark Williams and Ronnie O’Sullivan - at their best were better than anyone else on the circuit, but you would place a peak, Stephen Hendry, above all of them. Do you still have the same opinion? A: That was probably over a decade ago and I wouldn’t say the same now because all three have cemented their legacies as legends since. On their day, at their peak, they would all be unplayable. O’Sullivan deserves to be regarded as the greatest of all time now because of his achievements and longevity. But people should not forget how special Hendry was. He paved the way for the era we have now, making it more attacking, and his winning attitude was incredible. He probably burnt himself out because he was so intense.
on air I have made plenty, whether it’s using the wrong name, misreading the scores or giving out the wrong information. But there’s no point getting down about it – it’s TV, we’re not flying a plane.
Q: If you were a snooker player instead of a journalist/commentator who would you like to be? A: I guess it would be great to be a young player right now, with so many playing opportunities. If I could play like anyone, though, it would be Neil Robertson. His cue action is superb.
Q: Which player(s) do you most like to commentate on? A: It’s hard to look past Ronnie O’Sullivan because he is capable of playing snooker that is close to artistry and even in a mundane match there’s something to talk about. I always look forward to seeing Judd Trump play as well because he understands that as well as being a sport it is also entertainment.
Q: Which are the best, worst and most controversial matches you have commentated on? A: The best I would say was the 2018 World Championship final between Mark Williams and John Higgins at the Crucible. Two all-time legends going toe-to-toe in the biggest match in the sport. The worst was probably a quarterfinal in Belfast between Elliot Slessor and Li Yuan. It lasted nearly five hours but felt longer. Most controversial for me personally was at the English Open in Crawley a few years ago when I noticed Ronnie O’Sullivan had inadvertently fouled using the rest. He hadn’t noticed, neither had the referee, but we showed it on the replay. Afterwards he said I should have stopped the match but apart from running into the arena waving my arms about I’m not sure how I was supposed to do that.
Q: Who do you most like to partner with in the commentary box? A: I’m lucky in that I get to work with various former players and they all have a different way of seeing the game, but Alan McManus and Neal Foulds are a pleasure to work with because they have always done their research beforehand and you know they are going to add something beyond just talking about shots.
Q: What do you think of the relaxed dress code at some of the tournaments? A: It’s a bit of a non-issue for me. I think as long as players look like they’ve made an effort then it doesn’t really matter what they are wearing. Q: Have you ever said anything you shouldn’t while your mic is still open!? A: Nothing sackable, thankfully. We all make mistakes and in the many hours I’ve been
Q: Of the new and upcoming players on the tour, who do you rate the most? And why? A: There’s a crop of young Chinese talent and they are bringing each other on. We have already seen the likes of Yan Bingtao and Zhao Xintong break through as tournament winners and I’m sure more will. There’s a player called Pang Junxu, currently in his second season. He looks like a very tough competitor and beat Neil Robertson at this season’s European Masters.

This British Overseas Territory on Spain’s south coast is dominated by the magnificent Rock of Gibraltar - a 426m high limestone ridge. First settled by the Moors in the Middle Ages and later ruled by Spain, the outpost was ceded to the British in 1713. At just 6.8km2 in size, Gibraltar may be small, but there is certainly a lot to see and do! Here we take a look at just some of the accommodation, restaurants, bars and cafes, and places to visit whilst you are away from the baize!
