Dear Shopper, Last year, we created the Handmade for the Holidays catalog as way to support artists in the Richmond, VA region as the pandemic cancelled art festivals and other events, even closing shops, which many artists rely on for sales. We were proud to be part of their sustainability in a difficult year. This year, we are excited to build on a new tradition by sharing the 2021 catalog with you, featuring new and returning artists. You’ll browse original artworks and unique prints, colorful accessories, exciting home décor, and holiday gifts that will surprise and delight the receiver. For every purchase you make, you support individual artists and help them grow and thrive. meet the artists edie ashman Edie Ashman is one of those people that is happiest when she is creating, exploring many artistic avenues over the years. In most recent years she has focused on designing and creating jewelry and sells under the Edith Meriwether Designs moniker. Her line combines techniques of knit, crochet, macrame, bead weaving, and wire wrapping. In addition she has a line of recycled jewelry, called “Redeeming Charms”, made from old credit cards and store gift cards.
john joseph albert John’s primary work has been with words. He is a research scholar, essayist, and poet. In the early 1970s, he began painting in the oriental brush style. In 1973, he studied Chinese calligraphy with a Chinese monk at Valyermo monastery in California. In 1998, he began painting watercolor and mixed media under the counsel of artists in Georgia, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. He works to express spiritual realities through visible images, realistic and abstract. Each painting, large or small, conveys a truth or a spiritual narrative through the use of symbolic colors and shapes, based on theories ancient and new, Western and Eastern.
BIJOUX BELLEFLEUR Susann Belflower
German born, Susann Belflower moved with her family to Richmond, VA in 1999. She has loved art all her life and was a crafter since she can remember. After arriving in the USA, she had the opportunity to study art at VCU, Richmond. In 2000, she began working to obtain a BFA in Crafts with a minor in Art History. During her studies in metals, she received several awards and grants for her achievements. She loves to draw inspiration from nature and loves organic forms. To her, metalsmithing is a language where the possibilities are endless. Form, materials, and color can be combined in many different ways. Later she worked at a numerous bead and craft shops teaching classes. During that time, she learned beading techniques and realized that beads, silver, and metalsmithing work together beautifully. Since then, she created her own unique style of jewelry, some of which is displayed in various galleries and stores in VA & FL. ART BY ICHSHE Diane Davis
After seeing a heart drawn right before her eyes as a child, Diane Davis, known as Ichshe (I-She) to her friends, knew art would always be part of her life. After graduating from college, she focused on graphic arts, painting, and drawing. Her passion for art and the excitement of sharing that love blossomed when she began working with Alzheimer’s patients. The talent that poured from these first-time artists was a beautiful surprise to both student and teacher. Diane taught more first-time acrylic students for several years at the Cultural Arts Center. Once again, she saw amazing talents emerge. She told students, “When you pick up a brush today, you may never put it down.” She encourages everyone to take an art class, especially if you’ve never painted, and make some magic! Her joy comes from creating collages and paintings and her fun, vibrant personality is evident in her work.
JULIE MORRISON FITZGERALD Julie, a self-taught artist, has been designing and painting for over fifty years primarily primitives on wood. In the early years of her career, she co-owned the Gingham Goose Shop at Normandy Farm Restaurant in Potomac, Maryland, where she sold her artwork and that of other artists. As a self-taught artist, Julie relies on a good sense of composition and balance, lots and lots of practice and only painting scenes through direct observation and/or an emotional tie. Last, but not least, her paintings are imbued with a sense of humor
dana dumont Dana DuMont is an artist and educator who works with varied media including digital images, collage, drawings, fibers, glass, and clay. Elements of and connections to the natural world inspire her pieces and she regularly incorporates recycled, donated and found items into her works. She exhibits and sells her work regionally, her paint restoration of the RCA “Nipper” window is on view at The Smithsonian’s Museum of American History, and she continues her teaching, which like her artistic process, encourages creative risk-taking, perseverance, humor, reflection, and environmental stewardship. DuMont holds BFAs in Craft Materials and Art Education from Virginia Commonwealth University and a Master’s of Humanities with a concentration in art history from the University of Richmond.

george garrett
George Garrett began his lifelong love of photography during his years as a photographer for his high school yearbook in York County, VA. Here he learned the technical workings of a manual camera and honed his ability to capture action and movement on film. Later, while studying at VCU as a Painting & Printmaking student, he learned design, color and composition. As a successful woodworker and furniture designer, George’s photography took a back burner until his love of the outdoors was reignited as he walked his active dogs, Jill & Pete. During weekly trail runs, he rediscovered the beauty of the natural world and local flora and fauna.

In Between Dreams is a line of modern bohemian decor by Richmond, VA artist Walker Generelly. Inspired by her love of textile craft and home decor, Walker creates unique pieces for the home. By using dip dyed textiles, macrame, and weaving, she creates one of a kind wall decor and accessories. Each piece is one of a kind, handmade with love, and meant to bring joy into any space.
Mike Haubenstock Mike Haubenstock, based in Glen Allen, Virginia, paints landscapes and still lifes in oil. He is inspired by architecture, natural scenes and colorful displays. He first took up painting by starting lessons here at the Cultural Arts Center about 18 years ago. Mike’s painting is representational. He wants you to be drawn in by color and depth, by a painting that inspires, that creates continual interest, and that perhaps whets your appetite.

Jay Hall A passionate creative, Jay Hall has been active in the arts all his life. In his youth, singing and theater arts were his focus, but as an adult his creative pursuits span across multiple mediums in both the visual and performing arts. LAUREN HALL
For as long as she can remember, Lauren liked to create. Encouraged by and inspired by her mom, she enjoyed making everything from hair bows to beaded bracelets and would sell them at church bazaars. While playing with different media over the years, Lauren found herself constantly drawn to the long aisles of beads at the craft stores. Their colors, shapes, and varied styles had her imagination running wild. Eventually, while pregnant with her son, she gave in, purchasing beads to make her mom a bracelet for Christmas and that was the start of Lollie’s. After her son was born, she spent late hours, when he was asleep, playing with colors and textures to create unique pieces. Designing became a passion that she has continued for over fourteen years, always exploring new materials and styles.
HERBERT’S WINE JELLIES Carolyn Herbert
Carolyn Herbert began making Wine Jelly to help support a family member coping with the struggles of mental health. The goal was to produce a non-alcoholic jelly to support employment and success for her family member, as well as others. With a professional chef, they set out to make the best products possible. Herbert’s employees have developed ideas and products, some while incarcerated, and allowed the company to use their ideas. They began selling in 2017 and now have 8 employees working hard while finding self-confidence, financial gain, and giving back to the community. This has been the mission of Herbert’s from the time of her retirement from public school administration in special education. Carolyn has always had a passion for helping those in need and she cannot seem to stop in retirement. She takes pride in the company’s high-quality specialty products including those shown here. Their products were recognized by VA’s Finest and is for sale in specialty shops across the state.
missy hines Missy Hines is a conceptual artist whose work enables the viewer to experience the deeper issues her work often emulates. An award-winning artist, she participates in international art groups and is a regular exhibitor with ArtPrize Preview Week. Missy annually participates in the Art of Recovery exhibit in Piqua, Ohio for the past ten years. Among her many accomplishments, Missy’s sun artwork, seen in this catalog, has been accepted to the CBS Sunday Morning library.

MORRIS DESIGN Pat Morris
Pat grew up on the beaches of the eastern coasts from Newport, Rhode Island to Florida and has a strong connection with the Atlantic Ocean landscape. As a designer, she takes inspiration from the ever-changing forms and colors in the sky, sand, and surf, and in the birds and plants that are able to thrive in this somewhat hostile environment. When designing, her first thoughts are always of color. Every color evokes its own feeling and every ray of light magnifies, or changes, that feeling. The emotion of each color suggests to Pat the line, form, and texture elements needed to make the design work. She travels along a chaotic, instinctive path that doesn’t always make sense until the design is complete. She works in several mediums: fabric (costume/home), clay (jewelry/home); and semi-precious gems and beads of various types (jewelry).
GREEN PARROT STUDIOS Fakeha Naeem
A mother of three beautiful girls, Fakeha Naeem is also a print and jewelry designer. She believes that, just like every design resonates with each individual on a different level, jewelry too, connects us to a memory or reflects our own individual being which makes us different from others. Her jewelry is like a print in her mind which she creates using various techniques. When you look at her collection, it has something for everyone. You may find yourself in colors she used or a certain piece might speak to you of a story untold or a memory you forgot to unfold. They are trinkets of her love to design, to satisfy her passion to create and share her love for jewelry.
Amy Shawley Paquette Amy Shawley Paquette is a visual artist whose painting is inspired by the natural world. Birds are her primary subject matter and she loves pairing them with botanical, landscape, and texture elements. She works in oil, acrylic, and watercolor and enjoys exploring alternative approaches to traditional painting. Amy also teaches a variety of art workshops and gives lectures on painting, both virtually and in-person.

Madison Pollard mad kitchen co.
Mad Kitchen Co. began in 2017 as a food & travel blog while owner and artist, Madison Pollard, was living in Europe. Interested in adding an artistic component to the blog, Madison opened an Etsy shop where she could sell her food and travel-themed drawings. When the pandemic began to affect Madison’s home, Richmond, VA, she was inspired to create the Richmond Classics series, paying tribute to her community’s most beloved restaurants and landmarks. In 2020, Madison left her full time job in the restaurant world to pursue her creative passions as Mad Kitchen Co. She continues to illustrate her favorite cities while freelancing for musicians, small businesses and non-profits. She seeks to inspire others to explore the world through food, art and travel.

As soon as he had a 35mm point and shoot camera as a teen, Sean Toler was hooked on photography, but his love for abandonment photography began later in life. After his father-in-law gifted him his first digital camera that Christmas, on a whim, Sean stopped the car on the way to his parent’s house to photograph an old building he had seen hundreds of times growing up. Though that building no longer stands, it has been preserved digitally through his camera. In this way, he feels that he and so many others like him, are helping to preserve part of our history as more and more old buildings succumb to weakness and decay or are demolished in the name of progress. Early last year, Sean’s first book of photography was published. Forgotten Virginia features photographs documenting places and spaces from around the state while also sharing backstories and histories uncovered along the way.
ONE LITTLE WORLD Jodie Vieria
One Little World is a small fair-trade company based in Richmond, VA. They partner directly with their artisans in the developing countries of Uganda, Nepal, Ecuador, and Kenya. They travel to meet their artisans and collaborate on product design, which they create using materials local to each of their communities. One Little World artisans are paid fairly and work in safe and supportive working environments. They are proud to know their artisans, their families, and their communities. They are also proud to be members of the Fair Trade Federation.

Pat Whitlow is a Richmond native who has enjoyed making various types of crafts for years. She began making jewelry about 15 years ago and has been hooked on it ever since! She likes to create unique jewelry – especially pieces that incorporate unusual items such as silverware, buttons, vintage beads, etc. She loves making pieces “to order” and she has sold her work at craft shows and in various shops in Richmond and the Outer Banks. Pat was a beading instructor at Michael’s for several years before coming to the Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen, where she has been teaching for over 10 years. She enjoys teaching classes to both new and more experienced jewelry students. When she is not making jewelry, Pat helps her husband run their office furniture business.
