Dear Friends, Happy Holidays from the staff, board and volunteers of The Cultural Arts Center. While COVID seems determined to undermine holiday spirit and celebrations, we are determined to bring you the art, music and joy that the season merits. I hope that you will join us for the Joy of Illumination opening on December 5 and 6th‌ or take the opportunity to come by to see our lobby full of trees and wreaths during the month of December. I am personally looking forward to the December 18-20 performances of The Taters’ Shiny and Brite Holiday Concert. As always, our gift shop is filled with unique gifts to help you finish your holiday shopping. We are featuring many local artists in the shop and through our Handmade for the Holidays gift catalog. All items purchased on-site or through our catalog will benefit local artists and The Cultural Arts Center. Whether or not you are able to join us in-person at The Center, please know that we wish you a season full of holiday happiness and look forward to seeing you again as soon as possible. We are planning full steam ahead for a wonderful comeback while doing everything possible to bring you joy through the arts during these times.

THE TATERS
SHINY & BRITE HOLIDAY PARTY SOCIALLY DISTANCED CONCERT: DECEMBER 18-20
Tickets available at 804-261-ARTS PERFORMANCES: Friday, December 18th at 7pm Saturday, December 19th at 7pm Sunday, December 20th at 3pm “SHINY & BRITE”, The Taters’ holiday show is coming to the Cultural Arts Center for 3 socially-safe performances on December 18th, 19th and 20th. Featuring music from their first-ever holiday album, SHINY & BRITE, the show has a bit of everything The Taters have to offer, and that’s no small sack of toys! North of the James Magazine had this to say about the album, “The Taters have just released their first-ever holiday CD, and it covers all of your holiday listening needs in traditional Tater style. It’s called “SHINY & BRITE”, and one might even call it a holiday sampler, just like the variety boxes of colorful Shiny Brite Christmas decorations. Those Taters are known for their sampler-style shows; actually, that’s the beauty part about them.” The show will be filled with songs old & new, traditional as well as unconventional. Elvis, Roy Orbison, Everly Brothers, and Roger Miller are just a few of the artists covered, as well as several new Tater originals. Straight off the sleigh and ready to play, don’t miss this holiday round-up! Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door. For advance tickets and more information, please call 804-261-ARTS.

What is the most challenging part of your job? Juggling three different departments! I want our art classes, gift shop, and gallery exhibits to all be successful and I try hard to manage all the details that go into running these areas, but it is a challenge to keep up with at times. Especially now, as the holidays are approaching, I almost need to clone myself to get new exhibits installed, including the annual themed tree exhibit, Illumination, to create the winter/spring class schedule, and to run the new online gift shop and in-person shopping. I love what I do though and am always excited to get these projects done so our patrons can enjoy them! What’s a common question you get from visitors? (And what is the answer?) It comes as a question or an exclamation – How did I not know this was here?!
MEET THE STAFF
lauren hall, visual arts manager
(804) 261-6206 programs@artsglenallen.com
How long have you worked at The Cultural Arts Center and what is a typical day like for you? I have been at the Center for 15 years now and I love being part of this family! I don’t really have a typical day – everyday is different for me. As Visual Arts Manager, I curate the gallery exhibits, oversee all facets of the gift shop, schedule and manage our in-person classes, and plan special events throughout the year. This means that each day is guided by what programs are currently in the works and what needs arise. One day I might be installing a new exhibit in the Gumenick Gallery – arranging and hanging the art, lighting the show, and getting details like labels and artist info in place – while another day I may be at my desk all day creating new class schedules, working with new and current instructors to create a diverse set of offerings, or adding new products to the online gift shop. What do you enjoy most about working at The Cultural Arts Center? The family that we’ve built here both among staff and with our patrons. If you’re part of who we are, you’re part of the family. Being on staff here for so long, I’ve gotten to really know many of our instructors, students, exhibiting artists, and patrons who come out regularly for exhibits or performances. I love seeing these familiar faces and meeting new artists and patrons as well! 10 | Art Locally
We’re just off the beaten path, but the Center has so many wonderful art programs, that it is worth the quick trip here. Some people think we’re further away from downtown than we are. Just a quick trip up 95 to 295 and you’re here! Once you visit, you’ll see why I, and many staff members, get this reaction from first time visitors. There is truly something for everyone here – visual and performing arts under one roof. How has COVID-19 impacted your day-to-day operations? Like for most people, it turned things completely upside down. We spent the first part of the pandemic cancelling and rescheduling programs with high hopes for a quick return to normal. Once we understood the gravity of the situation, we had to cancel those programs again and instead shift our mindsets to how to continue our mission during a pandemic. For me, a priority was to focus on how we could continue to serve our customers, support local artists, and the Center during this. This led to our online gift shop being created and, later, our very first digital catalog of handmade gifts, Handmade for the Holidays (flip through and shop on our website!). While we’re open again, our onsite programs may look a bit different, but are the same high quality our patrons expect. There are also virtual options to walk thru gallery exhibits with the artists or to learn new art skills on our website too. There has been a learning curve figuring out how to create this online content, but I’m excited we’re able to offer it! What is one of your favorite memories during your time at The Cultural Arts Center? I was in the Gumenick Gallery one evening when a theater performance was also scheduled. A theater patron popped her head into the gallery, looked quickly around the space at the abstract art everywhere and said, “I don’t get this stuff.”
I told her that I love abstracts because they make you think or make you feel something. You have to take a bit of time with an abstract, look a little deeper, see what it means to you. I suggested she read the artist’s statement that gave some idea of the artist’s perspective as she created the work shown. As she read the statement, the woman stepped back and took in the title piece of the exhibit next to it and then continued to read. Then she REALLY looked at the art piece again. Slowly, she proceeded around the room and took in each piece one by one. By the time she had to get to the theater, she left and I was excited that she took time to give the work a chance. I was pleasantly surprised at intermission when she returned, bringing her friends with her, talking about the art and how interesting it was. She asked for more info about the artist and was eager to see more of her work. I have always loved that she not only gave the artwork a chance when she didn’t expect to like it or understand it, but she was genuinely excited about it. What do you like to do when you are not working? When not spending time with my husband and son, I like to make jewelry and sew. I have always wanted to learn how to make my own clothes and my own designs. So, I hope to spend time over the winter months to start learning how to do that. Wish me luck! Who is your favorite local artist? This is a hard question for a curator! There is so much talent in this region, that it’s hard to note just one! It may not count since she just moved out of the area, but if I had to choose one artist it would be Diane Clements. I saw her large colorful abstracts years ago and was hooked! I have had the pleasure of working with her several times to exhibit her work over the years. I am always blown away by the new work I see by her and she is an awesome person too! What’s a fun fact about you most people may not know? I’m a bit of a crazy cat lady. My family has six cats that we love to pieces. The plan was to stop at three cats and, well… What advice would you give people before their visit to The Center? Be open to experience new things. With four galleries, prepare to see a variety of art mediums and styles created by incredible artists from all walks of life. What you see during one visit will be completely different when you come back next time. Our artists may be showing for the first time ever or be professional, working artists who have been honing their style for decades. You’ll see new perspectives and ideas and I hope you’ll be open to connect with what you see.

THE JOY OF
Illumination Join us for the Joy of Illumination on December 5-6th from 4-6pm at The Cultural Arts Center! We have decked our halls with artisan-decorated trees and wreaths, all joyfully illuminated for the season. Take a one-way stroll through The Center to view our holiday exhibit. We will have outdoor carolers from the Henrico Pops Chorus. Plus, enjoy virtual concerts by Glen Allen High School students on our lobby monitors. At the end of the route, Santa has agreed to do a quick visit in our large Sculpture Garden to read “Twas the Night before Christmas” using a microphone to keep everyone safely separated. The local artist elves have also been very busy in our gift shop full of unique, handcrafted gift items – perfect for knocking out your holiday shopping early! Despite masks being required during your entire visit, this bit of joy is what we all need this season! We look forward to seeing you at this socially distanced event that’s free and fun for the whole family! This event is presented by The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen and Henrico Recreation and Parks. Can’t attend? Stay tuned to our website (artsglenallen.com) for videos of local choral groups singing carols, for photos and descriptions of some of our Illuminated Artisan trees, and our online Handmade for the Holidays catalog.

s a m t s i r h c tree
OH,
This crafty endeavor is great for little hands – the folding is very important. Also, everyone knows ornaments make great package toppers and gift tags, so put your little elves to work in the gift-wrapping department this holiday season! What you’ll need: • Cupcake liners – various sizes, colors, and patterns • String or ribbon • Glue stick, glue, or glue dots • Glitter glue, rhinestones, sequins, decorative paper, stickers, etc. What you do: 1. Choose at least four cupcake liners to create your tree. 2. Fold each liner in half and then fold in half again to create a triangle shape. 3. Layer each triangle starting from the bottom to the top to create a tree shape. 4. Cut a piece of ribbon or string at least 5” long. 5. Glue both ends of the string between the top two triangles to form a loop for hanging your ornament. 6. Continue to glue the remaining triangles to each other, layering one on top of the other. 7. Once your tree is formed, let it dry for a few minutes and then begin decorating.
8. Use your imagination: use sequins as ornaments; glitter glue to create garland; don’t forget the star on top. 9. If you’d like, add a base to your tree by cutting and gluing a rectangular piece of brown paper to the bottom. 10. Let your ornament dry and hang it on your tree or use as a package topper. DECK THE HALLS! We would love to see your finished projects! To be featured, please email a photo of your work of art to marketing@artsglenallen.com.
As seen in Richmond Family Magazine.
LOCAL ARTIST SPOTLIGHT Wanda Huestis
Wanda is a self-taught artist currently living in Richmond, VA. She previously worked in the IT industry for over 30 years. After discovering she had breast cancer and undergoing the treatment associated with it, she became unable to work and was forced into early retirement. After recovering from the illness, she wondered what she would do with herself. She dabbled at painting when she was a young woman and had always found it to be very therapeutic. She had recently purchased wood slices for another purpose and had some left over. She pulled out her paints and brushes and started painting bird scenes. Feedback was phenomenal and the rest is history! Follow Wanda on Instagram @wandaswhimsicals and at wandaswhimsicals.com.

A REFLECTION OF
28 | Art Locally
HOME STYLE MADE SIMPLE By: Lauren Hall
The holidays are the perfect time to spruce up your home! In normal years, we plan for family and friends to gather and want our homes to look its very best. While this year has been anything but normal and holiday plans may look different, we are spending more time at home and it is more important than ever for your living spaces to be not only comfortable, but to be a reflection of you.
show off your personality? Consider finding works of art – original or reproductions – that speak to you and show off your individuality instead. The right wall art can add color to a neutral room, add drama to a traditional space, or even bring a sense of calm to a room where you relax. Choose pieces that really catch your attention and your house becomes an extension of you.
Take time to re-evaluate each room of your home and consider what you need in that space and whether the décor reflects the feel you want for that space. Is your bedroom calm and relaxing for a good night’s sleep? Is the living room comfortable for binge watching your favorite show? Is your work space working for you? Now is a great time to update and personalize your style and add new excitement to your home.
As winter rolls in, another great way to update your space is to consider hygge (hoo-gah), the Danish concept of cozy living. Your living areas should be comfortable, warm, and inviting. If cold weather and the pandemic have you inside more often, add hygge inspired accents to make toughing out the winter a breeze. Add warm, soft throws and accent pillows to furniture where you lounge. Decorate with soft warm lights or your favorite scented candles. To add a little more hygge spirit to your space, make sure furniture is comfortable enough to curl up with a good book and hot cocoa. Then, when you unplug from that last Zoom meeting, online work and phone calls, your home will be a relaxing & inviting setting for you to unwind.
Function and style don’t have to be costly or time consuming. Small changes here and there can make a dramatic difference to how you perceive a space. For instance, adding house plants to a dreary corner will soften that space and add interest. A new door mat on the porch makes your entrance that much more welcoming, even if it is just you and your family enjoying it for now. One of the first things to consider to update a space are the walls you look at every day. If the color doesn’t excite you or just desperately needs a refresh, it may be time to paint. While trends have focused on gray as an ideal neutral for home decorating, a warmer color will add light and brighten a room. Take time to pick a color that you will love and that brings you joy. If you dare, paint your walls a bold new color or try an accent wall for an extra punch of color without the full commitment. Still not sure? Look for an accent space you can add color to. An interior door painted black instead of white adds a new layer of interest. Adding a touch of color to the back of a bookshelf showcases collectibles and books while making a statement. Let your space be light and fun for all the time you may be spending there over the colder months. Not prepared to break out the brushes and rollers yet? Another easy way to update your walls is to change what is on them. It is easy to choose popular wall art options at any chain retailer, but do these pieces
This time of year is also a great time to refresh family photos around the house. Get those pics off your phone and onto the walls! Look back at photos taken over the past few years and order prints of your favorites to frame up and add to tabletops and blank walls. If you have a blank or often neglected area of wall space, consider creating a photo collage using different size photos and unique frames. This is a great way to spice up walls lining a staircase or a hallway! Adding newer photos will make you smile as you relive those memories every time you view them. These personal touches bring family and friends who can’t gather in person closer in spirit. These fun, simple updates will make staying home more often less stressful. Whether you’re working or relaxing with a glass of wine, you want the view to be one that makes you happy. New color, art, comfy accents, and photos of loved ones will surround you with bliss as we make it through a winter like no other! As the 2020 Henrico Christmas Mother, can you tell us about what the Henrico Christmas Mother’s role is? How and when does the Henrico Christmas Mother get chosen? My role is to promote public awareness and to encourage monetary donations by representing Henrico Christmas Mother at events, meetings and assemblies throughout Henrico County. The Henrico Christmas Mother is nominated by her peers then voted on by the entire council, no later than January 15th. She takes office as the Henrico Christmas Mother March 1st. The nominee is selected from a rotation through the five magisterial districts in Henrico County.
Q&A WITH Jean Hayes,
HENRICO CHRISTMAS MOTHER Tell us a little about yourself... How long have you been active with Henrico Christmas Mother? I have volunteered with Henrico Christmas Mother since 2012 and represent the Tuckahoe District. The Toy Committee has been my home since 2013, and I continue to enjoy the “That’s exactly what I want” moment when a shopper finds that perfect toy. Since my retirement, my volunteer work has been my focus and I am grateful for the opportunity to give back to this community as the 2020 Henrico Christmas Mother. I moved to Henrico County in 1981. I am a registered nurse and have worked at Richmond Memorial Hospital later becoming a Henrico County school nurse for 23 years. My three children attended Jackson Davis Elementary, Tuckahoe Middle School and Freeman High School and I am the proud grandmother of four grandchildren! Henrico County has touched my family in so many ways and therefore has been an integral part of our lives. What is Henrico Christmas Mother’s mission? It is the mission of Henrico Christmas Mother to provide assistance in the form of food, new clothing, books and toys to qualifying families, seniors, and disabled adults during the holiday season. 32 32 || Art Art Locally Locally
What does it mean to you to be Henrico Christmas Mother? How does the pandemic effect what Henrico Christmas Mother is doing this year? It is a great honor and I enjoy being able to promote our wonderful program. As Henrico Christmas Mother I am doing more zoom meetings then in person meetings, but we are still able to engage the community even during these difficult times. This year we will help over 1,650 families in Henrico County, a 14% increase over last year. COVID-19 has impacted the way Henrico Christmas Mother will operate this year, but it will not impact our assistance to families. In order to ensure the health and safety of our recipients and volunteers we will not be offering shopping at the warehouse. Instead, we will be providing gift cards to qualifying recipients to purchase food, clothing, books and toys so their families can enjoy a healthy and happy holiday season. How can others help? Monetary donations are critical this year to fully fund this effort. Donations can be mailed to P.O. Box 70338 Henrico, VA 23255-0338 or you can visit our website www.henricochristmasmother.org to make a secure online donation. What else would you like us to know about Henrico Christmas Mother? Henrico Christmas Mother began in 1942 and has helped families during the holiday season every year since. We would greatly appreciate monetary donations this year, and plan to return to normal operations in 2021. We hope in addition to a donation you can volunteer and join us at the warehouse next year! The Henrico Christmas Mother and the Council would like to wish everyone a very happy holiday!

timeless holiday DÉCOR
One of the easiest ways to add quick seasonal decoration to your home is to add a wreath! Whether adorning your front door or a wall of your home, wreaths add no fuss color and style. Every December, the Slantwall Gallery is host to a handmade wreath exhibit, Ring in the Season, showcasing designs in a variety of mediums. Past wreaths have included stained glass versions, wood wreaths, deco mesh designs, upcycled art, fiber art, and traditional greenery. Unlike most exhibits, Ring in the Season is meant to disappear as the holidays near. Wreaths purchased are allowed to go home with the buyer same day so they can be enjoyed immediately. If you’re looking for unique holiday décor, this is a must shop exhibit! This year, Ring in the Season will feature not only holiday and seasonal themed pieces but beautifully crafted works by local artist, Cecile Coleman. Cecile’s wreaths celebrate the strength and beauty of women with holiday flair! They are perfect to enjoy year-round. While Cecile was born with the gift of creativity and enjoys working in a variety of artistic mediums, including acrylic, charcoal, oil pencils, and pastels, she also likes to mix mediums with natural textiles. As she enjoys portraiture of both people and animals it is no surprise that her wreath designs include a portrait-like component. Based out of the desire to create a wreath that would celebrate any occasion and could be a lasting piece of one-of-a-kind artwork, Cecile began making her “Not Just A Wreath” pieces that are both classic and festive. She starts by cutting each face from wood and then adorns it with hand-tailored accessories including fabric, Christmas baubles, silk flowers, and more. The adorned piece is then attached to the wreath base where it can be displayed as is or you can remove it from the base and frame it as wall art. Cecile grew up in Richmond and is currently residing with her spouse in Henrico. She enjoys teaching art to youth and is active as an instructor with the Center’s Outreach programs. When asked what her favorite holiday is, Cecile noted, “My favorite holiday is truly Christmas because, to me, it represents the need for peace and hope in these trying times.” Ring in the Season will be on exhibit December 1-31st featuring Cecile’s unique designs and more.

LOCAL ARTIST SPOTLIGHT Tannice Jean Pierre Mahju Art Tell us a little bit about your background and how long you have been creating art. I have always been creative as a form of expression and stress relief. When I was a child, my mother encouraged my creativity by always being supportive, no matter what. She saw that it brought me joy so she did what she could to fan the flame. How did you come to start your art business/launch your Etsy shop? During Covid lockdown, I found myself craving creativity more than ever. I started by painting and decorating my home, but felt the urge to share my creations with others. So, after much trial and error, I began making Christmas ornaments. It’s my favorite holiday, and I wanted to share it with people from all over the country. So MahjuArt was born. As an artist, how would you define your art-making practice? How do you know when a piece is complete? I am inspired by patterns, fabrics and paper of all types, so when I see a print or texture that I find beautiful, I feel compelled to create something, anything. And I see where it goes from there. What were some of your early influences to pursue the arts? (Did you always want to be an artist when you were a child?) I never considered myself an artist, but if I think back to my childhood, I’ve always been one. I see art in everything. And I enjoy creating pieces that will express my appreciation for certain moments in time. What (or who) inspires you? I truly appreciate people that use their entire existence as a form of art. Everything they do, or say is an artistic expression of themselves. And, of course, nature is the greatest artist and inspiration of all.
What is the goal behind your art? I simply want for my pieces to make someone smile. And if they’re willing to allow my art into their home, I am satisfied. What creative medium would you love to pursue but haven’t yet? Painting on canvas. Outside of your art—what feeds your imagination and brings you joy? My children are both expressive. My son is a photographer, and my daughter is a singer. I love seeing the world through their eyes. What’s ahead? Do you have any new projects planned or in the works? My goal is to expand my skills, and my offerings in my Etsy shop. I want for people to be able to find unique pieces that they will bring into their homes to find joy. What advice would you give to artists looking to promote and sell their art? Just do it. There’s someone right now that needs what you create. BIJOUX BELLEFLEUR Susann Belflower
German born, Susann Belflower moved with her family to Richmond, VA in 1999. She has loved art all her life and was a crafter since she can remember. After arriving in the USA, she had the opportunity to study art at VCU, Richmond. In 2000, she began working to obtain a BFA in Crafts with a minor in Art History. During her studies in metals, she received several awards and grants for her achievements. She loves to draw inspiration from nature and loves organic forms. Later she worked at a numerous bead and craft shops teaching classes. During that time, she learned beading techniques and realized that beads, silver, and metalsmithing work together beautifully. LOLLIE’S
|
LAUREN HALL For as long as she can remember, Lauren liked to create. Encouraged by and inspired by her mom, she enjoyed making everything from hair bows to beaded bracelets and would sell them at church bazaars. While playing with different media over the years, Lauren found herself constantly drawn to the long aisles of beads at the craft stores. Their colors, shapes, and varied styles had her imagination running wild. Eventually, while pregnant with her son, she gave in, purchasing beads to make her mom a bracelet for Christmas and that was the start of Lollie’s. After her son was born, she spent late hours, when he was asleep, playing with colors and textures to create unique pieces. Designing became a passion that she has continued for over fourteen years, always exploring new materials and styles.

Desiree Hopkins Originally from San Francisco, Desiree Hopkins lived most of her life in South Florida before she, her husband, and three kids moved to RVA almost twelve years ago. Her favorite part of the day is reading or designing projects on the couch with her two Havanese dogs. She discovered her passion for 3D printing while working in public libraries. Now, as the Moody Middle School librarian, she gets to teach students how to design and print their own ideas and projects. Her passion for working with her students led Desiree to design and sell contactless door openers during the pandemic. For the sale of each, she donates her earnings back to her school 3D printing program to continue encouraging young minds to dream and design.

ROGER LACY ART
|
roger lacy Born and raised in Washington, D.C., Roger moved to Ashland, VA in his teenage years than later, attended Norfolk State University where he majored in Fine Arts. He worked several jobs including working in restaurants and factories, but all this time he wanted to find work he could enjoy that would also make people feel good. In 1994, he took interest in the art of barbering and received his license two years later. He takes pleasure in teaching younger generations the art of cutting hair as they work with him in his shop. In 2018, inspired by his son, Roger began drawing again as well. His creative expression is realistic portrait drawings, working with graphite and charcoal as his medium of choice. He takes great pride in capturing the likeness of his chosen subject.

Pretties + Paper is focused on creating fun products that make people happy. Their pet bandanas line started because they had a hard time finding stylish options in stores that were large enough for their rescue dogs. Giving back to our community (and beyond) is a huge priority to their business. So, with every pet bandana that is sold, they are proud to donate one to rescues or shelters.

WOLFGANG BEARD CO.
Mike & Kristy Montesano As a husband and wife team, Mike & Kristy Montesano established Wolfgang Beard Co. in 2016 after Mike’s numerous attempts at trying to find a beard care regimen that not only was a healthy and nourishing solution to his own beard, but also to fit his budget. While Mike handcrafts all their products, Kristy manages the business/marketing side, which makes for a great team! MORRIS DESIGN Pat Morris
Pat grew up on the beaches of the eastern coasts from Newport, Rhode Island to Florida and has a strong connection with the Atlantic Ocean landscape. As a designer, she takes inspiration from the ever-changing forms and colors in the sky, sand, and surf, and in the birds and plants that are able to thrive in this somewhat hostile environment. When designing, her first thoughts are always of color. Every color evokes its own feeling and every ray of light magnifies, or changes, that feeling. The emotion of each color suggests to Pat the line, form, and texture elements needed to make the design work. She travels along a chaotic, instinctive path that doesn’t always make sense until the design is complete. She works in several mediums: fabric (costume/home), clay (jewelry/home); and semi-precious gems and beads of various types (jewelry).

CHARLOTTE’S WEB Charlotte Parks
Growing up poor on a small North Carolina farm, Charlotte’s earliest memory of homemade perfume was a drop of vanilla extract rubbed on her wrist. During frequent walks in the woods she was surrounded by the smell of flowers, freshly plowed fields, rain dampened earth, harvested grains, hickory nuts and leaves smoldering in an autumn fire, each with its own intoxicating aroma. Inspired by these childhood memories, she created these harmoniously blended botanical body oils that awaken your senses to the earth’s ever-present fragrances.

ART BY ICHSHE Diane Davis
After seeing a heart drawn right before her eyes as a child, Diane Davis, known as Ichshe (I-She) to her friends, knew art would always be part of her life. After graduating from college, she focused on graphic arts, painting, and drawing. Her passion for art and the excitement of sharing that love blossomed when she began working with Alzheimer’s patients. The talent that poured from these first-time artists was a beautiful surprise to both student and teacher. Diane taught more first-time acrylic students for several years at the Cultural Arts Center. Once again, she saw amazing talents emerge. She told students, “When you pick up a brush today, you may never put it down.” She encourages everyone to take an art class, especially if you’ve never painted, and make some magic! Her joy comes from creating collages and paintings and her fun, vibrant personality is evident in her work.

MARBLE-OUS CREATIONS Wayne Swatlowski
Wayne started out as an artisan creating beaded jewelry but, about 15 years ago, switched to glass. He uses a very unique marble fusing process using a microwave kiln. He enjoys working with glass because the end product is always a bit of a surprise. He may try to control the color of the pendant by the way he arranges the marbles, but in the end…the glass wins and the pendant will be what it wants to be! Wayne retired from non-profit work one year ago and now has more time for experimenting with this art form. It works well at keeping one old man from wandering the streets aimlessly. Wayne thanks you for supporting the artisans in this catalog!

THE JEWELRY BOX Pat Whitlow
Pat Whitlow is a Richmond native who has enjoyed making various types of crafts for years. She began making jewelry about 15 years ago and has been hooked on it ever since! She likes to create unique jewelry – especially pieces that incorporate unusual items such as silverware, buttons, vintage beads, etc. She loves making pieces “to order” and she has sold her work at craft shows and in various shops in Richmond and the Outer Banks. Pat was a beading instructor at Michael’s for several years before coming to the Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen, where she has been teaching for over 10 years. She enjoys teaching classes to both new and more experienced jewelry students. When she is not making jewelry, Pat helps her husband run their office furniture business.

sean toler photography sean toler
As soon as he had a 35mm point and shoot camera as a teen, Sean Toler was hooked on photography, but his love for abandonment photography began later in life. After his father-in-law gifted him his first digital camera that Christmas, on a whim, Sean stopped the car on the way to his parent’s house to photograph an old building he had seen hundreds of times growing up. Though that building no longer stands, it has been preserved digitally through his camera. In this way, he feels that he and so many others like him, are helping to preserve part of our history as more and more old buildings succumb to weakness and decay or are demolished in the name of progress. Early this year, Sean’s first book of photography was published. Forgotten Virginia features photographs documenting places and spaces from around the state while also sharing backstories and histories uncovered along the way.
