EXPERI M E N TAL DESIGN IDEAS assignment two

S

EXTENSION

Building upon the three preferred, inspiring elements, assignment two is an exploration through a sensory avenue. The factual knowledge gained from assignment one has been extracted from our sensory relationship to it. Defining these elements more abstractly will remove them from their original context. What did these activities reveal? Speed, tension, expansion, circularity, repetition, extension, force, rhythm .... ? Mixing intuitive (designerly ways) and non-intuitive (research into literature) design methods and personal creative impulses, students will give personal interpretations to the sensory concepts and ideas through a variety of media derived from their selected elements. Beginning with the principles sensesof the haptic (touch), aural (sound), visual (sight-only colour not form, olfaction (smell) and gestation (taste), students will need to develop an understanding of the translation of the physical experiences from assignment one into sensory aspects. Investigate them through a wide range of experimental possibilities in diverse media with a high senseof aesthetic intention to build an ‘information architecture’. Submission of assignment two consists of a collation of a range of experiential explorations of the sensory of your three elements. Each student is required to summarize their research into the sensory itself and in relationship to their three elements in a minimum of 900 words (approx 300 words per element) with primary references (APA Style).
