LEISURE IS LUXURY. It’s what we took to heart when making this Charleston city guide and who better to look to than the city’s most innovative cultural, culinary and musical exports: we’re talking about bands like SUSTO and Brave Baby to the established restaurateurs behind Charleston’s booming food scene. Nicknamed The Holy City, Charleston is one of the oldest cities in the US and one of the most hospitable. Known for its southern charm and well preserved architecture, the people of Charleston know how to live the good life. On any given day, you can find its residents cruising the many waterways that surround the city, strolling down King St or partaking in a good old fashioned oyster roast. With beautiful waterfront scenery and delicious lowcountry cuisine, it’s no wonder Charleston consistently ranks as one of the friendliest cities in the world. To find out where to go, we asked the city’s best where they dine, drink and most importantly, chill. So for those who need a break from their chaotic schedule or hectic work life — RELAX AND WELCOME TO CHARLESTON.

He is the founder of Eclectic Cafe & Vinyl, an Emporium located on Spring Street in Charleston which features a mix of wine, craft beer, coffee, vinyl (new and used), and a newsstand, while also hosting live events. The establishment opened on June 29, 2016.
JOEY RYAN
GRACE JOYNER
After her involvement in several bands in the Charleston area, Grace Joyner released her first EP Young Fools in the spring of 2014. This was followed up by her first LP Maybe Sometimesin C, which came out in May 2016 and was produced by Wolfgang Zimmerman of Brave Baby. Her style is a mix of rock and pop with Stevie Nicks-esque undertones.
SHE RETURNS FROM WAR
Singer/songwriter Hunter Park is the frontwoman for folk project She Returns From War and is signed to 10 Foot Woody Records in Charleston, SC. She is accompanied by Charlie King and Jesse Ledford and has released two EP’s and a full length record with more music on the way.
Joey Ryan and Joshua Walker are the owners of Charleston’s Xiao Bao Biscuit, located in a renovated gas station. Ryan grew up in Charleston, but traveled throughout the west coast in his twenties working at various bars, restaurants, and lounges gaining experience in all aspects of the business. While working at the Belmont Lounge in Charleston, Ryan and Walker met and eventually opened up Xiao Bao Biscuit with Walker on the food menu and Ryan focusing on the bar. Xiao Bao, meaning “precious little one,” is a nickname for Walker’s wife who is from Northern China.
KYLE NORTON
Kyle Norton and partner Jesse Sandole opened 167 Raw in July 2014, after first opening a similarly conceptualized 167 Raw in Nantucket, Mass. The seafood restaurant serves tacos and sandwiches (including lobster rolls), along with its most important feature, the raw bar.

Davis has a pizza-cutter tattoo on his arm, proudly wearing his dedication to slangin’ dough. Luke’s Craft Pizza is a carry-out only pizza shop located on Ashley Avenue.
MR. JENKINS
Mr. Jenkins has released over 30 projects in the past decade. Although his solo work is heavily experimental, he has also contributed to recordings for several different styles including alt-country, folk-rock, and jazz. He grew up in Walterboro, South Carolina and was in his high school’s marching band, then the jazz program at the College of Charleston.
6.
NEEDTOBREATHE

PAUL YELLIN
Paul Yellin, or “The Rhum Chef,” first studied cooking under chef Hans Schwietzer at the Sandy Lany Hotel. Though Brooklyn-born, he was raised in Barbados, which gave him access to the rich culinary traditions of the Caribbean. He has travelled the world, cooked for major political figures, including President Barack Obama, and written a cookbook with Mount Gay Rum. Yellin currently owns and operates the Cane: Rhum Bar and Caribbean Kitchen in Charleston.
RUN DAN RUN
Run Dan Run or RDR was first conceptualized in 2006 by Dan McCurry and Nick Jenkins, who were later joined by musician, songwriter, and studio engineer Ash Hopkins. Described as “honest, lyrically-driven, indie rock, the trio released their first full-length album in the summer of 2007, Basic Mechanics followed by an acoustic EP 27 Coming St in 2009. Their most recent album Normal was released in 2011.
SUSTO
SUSTO began as the project of Justin Osborne, who after being worn out from over ten years of writing and making music dissolved his band Sequoyah Prep School and took a trip to Cuba. The voyage served as a catalyst for the creation of SUSTO. After releasing their first self-titled album in 2014, SUSTO relied heavily on live performances for exposure. The meaning of the word SUSTO is derived from a cultural illness amongst Latin American cultures, a condition of suffering following a traumatic experience.
XAN MCLAUGHLIN
Raised in Virginia Beach, Xan McLaughlin attended James Madison University while holding down several restaurant jobs in the area. After graduating in 2004, McLaughlin briefly worked in the corporate world before realizing he wanted to return to the culinary business, and moved to Las Vegas. Through his subsequent experiences working at Casino Monte Lago and Reflection Bay Resort, he decided to head back to the east coast, eventually settling down in Charleston. He became operating partner to Karalee Fallert for what became the Park Cafe in Charleston, a restaurant known for its fresh and local ingredients.

There is an art to selecting good records, and we don’t mean by title, but by the quality and condition of the vinyl itself. If you’re gonna spend more than a couple hours on one of the porches at Royal American then you’re probably gonna have at least one round of rum punch. Keon Masters: It’s kind of been our home where we make music since 2009. I was a sophomore in college when we acquired it and then we made it bigger as the years went on. This spot has been a center-of-town staple and we’ve lived in probably every neighborhood around it. Elliotborough where we are right now has always kind of been the heart and soul of our creative community. Our music scene has grown a lot because of this space, to a realm we never thought we’d get. Wolfgang Zimmerman: For me it’s been a good spot because I’ve been able to work here but also there hasn’t really been any limits on time — we can stay up here till 4AM and wail on the drums. Keon: A lot of mojo comes after midnight and sometimes you can’t get that in these neighborhoods. Being in a band it’s everyone’s passion, it’s what we’ve always wanted to do. But in this town we’ve always had supplemental income whether that’s working at a restaurant or hotel or Uber driving, this space has always been our solace and the spot we actually do the things we want to do. And whether it’s working, it is still leisure to us.

When the mouths are well open, they are done. 4. Lift the rack off, and empty the oysters onto a table. Use your gloves to hold the oysters while you open them. 5.
