MEAT PIES: AS TOLD BY DICK DIVER

and you definitely don't ever want to eat one. Okay, so they're kind of a thing
Porgie & Mr Jones in Hawthorn. And they do breakfast all day!
Seriously, those things are fucked. You don't want to know what goes in them at the footy. But I'm convinced no one actually enjoys them that much. They just sit there, burning their mouths with molten animal arse and lips, talking to their mates about how good it is whilst secretly wishing they were eating a falafel or a pizza or something decent: “Faaaaark, how good's this, eh?!” I

would go to Sydney Road in Brunswick and get a feta and spinach pie!
best pairing with Vegemite Banoffee: POACHED EGGS. Runner up: Avocado. The Delta Riggs: Toast and butter all the way. No compromise unless you only have crackers. Dick Diver: Fresh bread and butter. But it's important there's more butter than Vegemite. Your tellies spreading Vege like a brickie putting down mortar. But it's really salty, you don't need much. Fractures: Not chocolate. Cheese, on toast, on a biscuit. That’s all. Gossling: Sliced avocado. Hiatus Kaiyote: Buttery toast is the only thing Vegemite should be ingested with. My dad used to put it in gravy and that worked. Husky: Hot toast with melted butter and a coffee (in the morning), a beer (in the afternoon) or a glass of red (in the evening). Vegemite works any time of day. Kingswood: Cheese and bread. People don't understand Vegemite. They apply it like jam and then complain because the taste is so powerful. Trick is just a light streak on toast, and that will guarantee you pleasure. Miami Horror: Cheese and butter on bread.

Best Neighborhoods
I grew up in Clifton Hill, and it still has my heart. It is right by the Dights Falls and lush parklands. It’s a short walk to Collingwood Children’s Farm, which is an inner-city farm with its own café attached, and it is walking distance to Fitzroy, Northcote and Collingwood. It used to be old hippie families and ratty kids like myself. Nowadays it’s a bit “skinny latte mum” vibe, but it’s still where I can visit my mum and dad and get the closest to nature in the city. — banoffee CULTURE COLLIDE . 19

Best Place to Have a Conversation With a Stranger
The Orb: Crystal Palace Park with Ruby our Alaskan Malamute. The Mispers: Food markets behind the South Bank. Ghostpoet: Anywhere! I wish more Londoners did but we have our ways, init. Happyness: The Hellfire Club. It's a big country house outside of London that turns into a swingers’ club every so often. They give out free hot dogs and soft drinks, apparently. Palma Violets: The bushes on Hampstead Heath. The people there are much more friendly than city dwellers. Laurel: Unfortunately London isn’t great for this. In fact, nobody likes to talk to each other. Unless they’re drunk, then you’ll make a lot of new friends. The Maccabees: Nowhere in central London. Except maybe Soho. And DEFINITELY not on the tube. No one's got time for strangers anymore, which is a shame. Go to a good pub. Jamie T: On the street. It’s a common misconception that Londoners don't talk to each other. Most people are always up for a chat, apart from on the tube. Don't talk to anyone on the tube; it’s seen as an admission of intoxication or insanity.

BEST VIEW
Easily the best view of London is driving across Waterloo Bridge, from North to South, ideally from the top deck of a bus. It's on an arc in the river so you get a 180° view with so much crammed in it. On your left is Tower Bridge and the city; ahead of you is the national theatre and the south bank, and to the right is Parliament. Otherwise, the Bussey building in Peckham has a great view over South London, especially in the evening, and the obvious one is Hampstead Heath. — The Maccabees

OR, pick up a beautiful blanket at Cambie in Parkdale. Black Pistol Fire: The Red Room is a great spot in Chinatown! You can get a decent meal, a cocktail, or warm up with some tea from their great selection. They play good music and it's always a great place to hang. Born Ruffians: Toronto winters seem to be mild and slushy for four months, with one month of life-threatening cold wedged in the middle. Having a place to go to warm up is key, especially if by "warm up" you mean "drink booze." Get Well on Dundas Street West is a fine place to warm you from the inside out. Also they have pinball. Cancer Bats: Depending on what neighbourhood you're in, I would say my toss up would be between Capital Espresso in Parkdale, Tucana Coffee on Dundas, Sam James Espresso on Harbourd, Dark Horse Coffee on Spadina, Bull Dog Espresso on Church, Black Canary Coffee on Sherbourne, and Jet Fuel on Parliament. That's the best coffee in town. July Talk: Communist’s Daughter. Tokyo Police Club: You can’t escape the bone-chilling Toronto winter by something so simple as “going inside,” so in the grand Toronto tradition of vastly overcompensating, I suggest finding the most popular band playing at the legendary Horseshoe Tavern and cramming yourself into the middle of the crowd. Grounders: We get some pretty rough winters up here so usually when it gets really cold I’ll jet over to my local west end YMCA and soak in the hot tub with old guys until they TRAVEL WITH PURPOSE ask me26 to. leave.

Lower East Side dwellers The Knocks (Ben "B-Roc" Ruttner and James "JPatt" Patterson) got their name from their neighbors — making music in the tiny apartment they shared right out of college on Avenue C, they were often met with knocks signaling it was time to quiet down. But the dance-pop duo didn’t let that stop them. They’ve since released remixes of Haim, Goldroom, and Santigold, and are gearing up to release their debut album in the fall, which will feature Cam’Ron, Phoebe Ryan, Walk the Moon, and more. Fulfilling a love of videogames and anime, they ventured to Tokyo this summer to discover that more than NYC, this is truly the city that never sleeps.

BEST VIEW OF THE CITY
Beach Slang: Bartram's Garden. The Dead Milkmen: (Rodney Anonymous) From just below the statue of Billy Penn atop City Hall. Fun fact: When it rains, the water rolls off of Mr. Penn's scroll, giving the illusion that he is urinating on Broad St. (Joe Jack Talcum) The Free Library looking at City Hall. (From this angle it does look like William Penn has his wang out.) Hop Along: Walking home from Drexel I used to pass over the South Street Bridge everyday. Jukebox the Ghost: (Tommy) I grew pretty fond of the view from the Ben Franklin Bridge, since it was my daily running route. Low Cut Connie: The Rocky steps at the top of the art museum looking down over the plaza feeling for one brief moment like a true champion. Then the long walk down and realizing you're still just a schmuck. The War on Drugs: I actually think the best view of the city can be seen while you're merging onto the Vine Expressway from 95 South — it takes you right through the heart of Philadelphia and is a great moving portrait of the skyline.

(Joe Jack Talcum) “How to Turn Anything into Something Else,” a collaboration between an art collective and students aged 10 to 15. (Dean Clean) The mural at the intersection of Spring Garden and Broad St. is magnificent. Hop Along: On the Frankford/Market line, from about 40th-60th street you'll find a series of murals referred to as "A Love Letter For You." I believe the artist's name is Powers and his work brings fresh air to an otherwise pretty dull train ride. We also have the Rocky statue, considered by many to be Philadelphia’s and the world's greatest artistic accomplishment. Low Cut Connie: Across from Pat's and Geno's at the corner of 9th & Wharton is a mural of legendary musicians of South Philly. It includes our good pals Jerry Blavat (aka the Geator with the Heater) and Bobby Rydell. It's crumbling and needs a facelift, but still lets the cheesesteak tourists know that this trashstrewn neighborhood was a real hot-bed of rock ‘n’ roll and croony gold in the ‘60s. The Starting Line: Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens on South St. is a must-see spot and it’s massive – it spans three city lots, and it’s like walking into another universe. The work was created by mosaic artist Isaiah Zagar and the mosaics are made up of everything from tiles, to bike wheels, to glass bottles, and it’s glorious. Vacationer: The fountains in front of the Art Museum. They're beautiful, and people splash around on hot days. It's a nice vibe.

I feel like Philadelphia has somehow wed the high-brow and the unpretentious better than any city I've known (which is a lot). There is economic inequality, to be sure, like every city in the world, but those delineations somehow feel blurred here. Snobbery is uncommon, at least in my experience. People are a less image-conscious and little bit more relaxed—you don't have to choose what category you fit in. Do you love baseball, but also James Joyce? No problem. Do you work for a construction company but play in an art-rock band? Sweet. Are you deeply religious, openly gay and generally wear clothes that make you look like an extra in Tombstone? Their music is a clear embodiment of this mentality: with both the release of EP Happy Songs for Happy Zombies in 2009 and full-length debut, Everything Else Matters in 2015, their sound is a stream of beautifully chaotic, shimmery dream rock you can easily get lost in. Their tour of the UK, and chance encounters with the country’s wind and fog, will continue through the fall in cities like London, Glasgow, and Manchester.

I’m going to find out his name. We’d get his face tattooed on our bums. [We both Google it.] Sean T. There you go, that guy. J: Oh yeah! I would love to have Sean T. on me. With a little voice bubble that says: “Get some.” I think we would get the Sublime logo from 40oz. to Freedom. Who would you want on your zombie apocalypse task force? C: I would have Jay-Z definitely because I imagine he has a helicopter and a pen that can [blow up] the world or something like that. J: Bill Nye the Science Guy. C: Oh my god, that’s such a good shout. J: I think that he would have the wherewithal to endure an apocalypse. That’s a good answer. J: Comin’ in hot. [Both laugh.] What unexpected cultural differences have you encountered when talking to each other? J: We talk a lot about how different the lingo is. Everything in the UK to me sounds very cute. And I think everything in American lingo sounds absurdly serious, the best example being, “the Credit Crunch” versus “the Great Depression.” C: The other day I was talking about bogies. I was like, “Oh, I’ve got a bogey,” and Jack was like, “What’s that?” And I was like, “Oh, a booger.” That was kind of funny to me that he didn’t know what our version of a booger was. J: I think in America, ‘bogey’ is a Top Gun phrase, like enemy fighter planes or something like that. What are your pre-show rituals? C: I heard you guys, you warm up a lot. You yell and shout for hours. J: We have dressing rooms that are combined, so I heard your ritual for the first time [the other day]. It sounds like a dance party. C: Yeah, that’s it. That’s all we do. J: I think a lot of what we do is pretty much the opposite. We warm up for 30 minutes, and we each have a tiny shot, and I drink a big thing of caffeine and we all just talk about the show, and I think Charli’s is more — I haven’t seen it, but I imagine Charli puts on her sunglasses and just DJs a party in her room. [Both laugh.] I already covered “Rollercoaster.” I watched your encore last night, and I really loved “I Wanna Get Better” live. It was really good. And I loved your Kanye West cover. Am I allowed to pick a cover of a cover? I kind of prefer that version to Kanye’s, and I usually never say that, because I think Kanye is God. I really love that cover though. J: “Break the Rules” in that same scenario — in the vehicle. But my favorite song of Charli’s is “London Queen.” I would cover that. And it would be cool to call myself a London Queen. So what happened in that car ride? J: We can’t talk about it. C: We can’t really say. It was a weird day. [Both laugh.] Where did you two first meet? C: We met at award shows. I actually went to Jack’s first-ever Bleachers show at the Troubador [in Los Angeles]. That was the first one, right? J: Yeah, first one ever. It was right around when we worked in the studio together. C: We kept bumping into each other, and we just got on well. J: The first time I saw Charli, I didn’t meet her until a year after this, but I saw her at this festival in Montreal called Osheaga, and it was morning, and this was during Charli’s — was there a phase, Charli, where you were in big, black platforms, and your hair was shooting out in every direction? C: Yes. That was a big phase for me. J: What was that like 2013, 12? C: Yeah, yeah. J: So it was around that time at the festival, and I had just woken up, and I walked over to catering. I was sitting and eating alone, and then Charli walked in, in that whole look, and I was like, “What is that?” [Charli laughs.] It was just this wild human being, sleepwalking almost. What’s the weirdest gift you’ve gotten from a fan? J: A Voodoo doll of myself. I don’t know if it was meant to be a Voodoo doll, but it was a tiny doll. I took it home very carefully and put it on the shelf, and I left it there, because I really got this feeling that whatever happened to this doll was going to happen to me. So I put it in a very safe place. Fans are often such great artists and do such amazing work, and if it looked a little worse it would have been more comfortable for me. But it looks so much like me that it needs to be protected. I’m going to put a fucking helmet on this thing. C: An inflatable, life-size Justin Bieber doll. Do you have any favorite cities you’ve traveled to? J: I like Portugal a lot. I think the people there are really excited to be alive. C: I’ve never been to Portugal. I like Paris just because I like how romantic it is, even though sometimes it’s totally not when you’re there. I just had this idea of scenic, romantic Paris, when that stuff never really happens. Have you experienced any kind of culture shock in any of the cities you’ve visited? C: When I go to Asia or Russia, there’s definitely a big cultural difference in places like that. In Asia, in terms of audiences at shows and the etiquette at shows, it’s very polite and respectful, which is super interesting. It’s different from shows in the UK or even in the US. Does that disarm you when you get onstage? C: Every place has a different vibe. I like that, it makes it special.

I can’t speak Japanese, but I kind of wanted to have songs in that language. I was going to try and play one but it’s so difficult to remember it. I had to learn everything phonetically. Have you ever had an anxiety dream about performing? C: I don’t think so. I have had an anxiety dream about me killing someone and having to run away and hide for the rest of my life. A specific person? C: No, I never remember who. It’s just sort of often that I’m hiding out. I don’t know … just being on the run. It’s kind of scary. J: That’s a weird one, because I have anxiety about a lot of things. Performing is not something I have [anxiety] about. It’s a place that I feel very fiercely myself so I’m not afraid of coming off as anything but. The root of anxiety is being a kid at a sleepover, and you don’t want to be there any longer. You wish you could go home to your space where people understand you and you understand yourself. I’m the most anxious when I’m in a bad space and I don’t want to be, and that’s not the place that I’ve made for myself onstage. How do you know when you’ve gotten to that point in performing? Do you both like Broadway musicals or is that just Jack? J: Charli said she’d go to Wicked with me, I think. C: Oh, musicals, yeah. It’s not my thing, you know, but I could maybe go to Wicked if I was totally not paying for anything and had the option to leave halfway through. It’s just not my shit; the world is not that happy and never will be, and no one just breaks into song. And that is how I feel about that. Chelsea Wolfe’s 6 Rules for Touring Words by Chelsea Wolfe
“Basically just try not to totally self-destruct”
Packing Even though I don’t follow this rule, try to bring the smallest suitcase you can, especially to Europe. I actually wear a few prints and colors at home, but I pretty much only bring black clothing on tour. You can mix and match it and it doesn’t look as bad when it’s wrinkled.
Health Accept that you will become a giant bruise on tour if you do your own roadie-ing. Bring Arnica or Advil. Take shitty food off your rider and ask for fruits and vegetables. Drink water. Get used to sleeping with earplugs in. Basically just try not to totally self-destruct. Being in a van for 8 hours when you’re hungover is the worst.
Be a Good Person Try to be respectful and leave places nicer than when you arrived.

Everyone’s going to be moody at some point on the tour, sometimes everyone is moody at once or sometimes you just start to feel claustrophobic and turn into a caged animal. Try not to take it too seriously — just move on. Don’t let the van turn into MTV’s The Real World.

We find Angel Deradoorian in line at Trails Café in Los Feliz, outfitted for the unusually humid LA morning. Neither of us is feeling particularly hungry, so we opt for coffee and tea as we sit amid Griffith Park’s oak and walnut. Having been in bands since she was a teenager, Deradoorian broke into the spotlight as a bassist and vocalist for The Dirty Projectors. Deciding to leave the band was not easy. “I couldn’t really tell when I left the band how it would play out. It was a lot of self-discovery, because when you tour you put all of that to the side, and then I didn’t really know what music I liked anymore. So I took some time to find that out and learn how to write in a way that wasn’t so simple to me.” Having since collaborated with artists like Flying Lotus and Avey Tare, the multi instrumentalist and songwriter decided to make the recording of her debut album a solo endeavor. “The process was mostly solitary and I meant for it to be that way. But it’s really important to be alone too. It’s kind of the realization that whatever you want, you have to do it. Even if there are other people around you, ultimately you’re in charge and you better be ready.” The result is The Expanding Flower Planet, an album that merges seemingly contrary images: old and new, plural and singular, the ancient and technological. Drawing from world traditions like Japanese, Middle Eastern and Ethiopian folk music, Deradoorian has crafted a sound that reaches both back in time and forward to places uncharted. In bonding those ideas, The Expanding Flower Planet moves towards a place of discord rather than perfection. “In eastern music, you have this one drone line that always meets back with the melodic line. And I think it allows for a certain kind of dissonance. It doesn’t allow a complete pure harmony, which I think is very prominent in western music right now, so everything sounds too clean to me...I wanted to bond the idea of finite and infinite.” From its meditative qualities to its earthly origins, Angel Deradoorian’s music transcends place altogether.

ANGEL DERADOORIAN’S RECOMMENDED LA HIKING SPOTS Favorite spots in LA I like Elysian Park. That one’s awesome because you can do the entire perimeter and it takes two hours. It’s really nice to experience all the terrain levels of Elysian and how much you can see the city when you’re way up there. There’s a spot in Topanga. All the national forest trail spots there are kind of freaky and psychedelic; you’re just out on the hills with the rattlesnakes. I really like the Point Dume hike. There’s a cliff hike you can do over there that edges the ocean. You go through the big parking lot at Point Dume and right when it ends there’s a trailhead. It’s not super private feeling but you get to these certain spots where it’s just the ocean and the cliff.
Favorite spots outside of the city I’ve gone to Sturtevant Falls in the San Gabriel Mountains. It’s a little waterfall area off of the 210. It’s cool because the water goes through the entire hike and you’re pretty deep in the forest. I should tell you about my friend Butchy [Fuego]. He did the entire John Muir Trail. He started in Northern CA and ended here, and I think he did 30 days of hiking and scavenging food. He came back and his eyes were all bloodshot and he lost 20 pounds, and I was like “you are an ascetic monk type with major self-denial.” He’s amazing.
Do you ever feel the pull to do something like that? Oh yeah, all the time, except I’m not as strong as him. Not yet at least.

onuts are a comfort food in a very classical sense: iconic, ubiquitous, and a flagship in what most would list as staples of American food. Maybe donuts are ostracized a bit more these days in light of a national trend to be health conscious, but there is something umami about them that Americans have built an insatiable demand around. You can find a $4-5 artisanal donut in LA, but these will perpetually pale in comparison to the $1 crueller from the donut shop adjacent to the car wash. Places like Stan’s Donuts, DKs and K’s are a few gems that Angelenos have been graced with for at least a couple decades now, with Stan’s coming in at the 1965 mark. These places are important to me because once inside, they are no different than any donut emporium you may encounter along the Bible Belt or random interstate in America. They are true to their roots while laying waste to the new but not improved shiny, plastic and subversively healthier alternatives. If it ain’t broke...

long winter in toronto an Interview with Fucked up's Mike Haliechuk by Rachael Roth
Cancer Bats by Zach Slootsky
If the underground hardcore movement had moguls, the biggest would be Toronto’s Fucked Up. Forming in 2001, they’ve managed to both fuck shit up (MTV’s studios in 2007 and 2008, anyone?) while simultaneously making huge contributions to the art and hardcore scenes. Both in content and sound, their music knows no bounds. Lead vocalist Damian Abraham aka Pink Eyes aka Father Damien gives the band a persistent, grimy conversations exist between bass, drum and guitar. If you’d any doubt of the intricacy of their arrangements, their self-described “rock opera” album David Comes to Life lends a whole new perspective to the limits of hardcore. We all hate winter in Toronto and it seems to get longer it — Long Winter maybe can give people something to look forward to every month instead of hibernating and taking Vitamin D pills under the covers. The only cool thing is, it actually does make the winter seem shorter for us. We just stress and worry for 30 days a month until the event happens, and we constantly feel like we're running out of time to make shit happen, so it’s a bit of a silver lining.

How do you handle band hospitality? What sort of accommodations do you give the bands based on your experience playing festivals and shows? Pretty Boys by Rick Clifford
The one lesson we learned early is that you can pay bands less if you show them a good time. Not that we try and rip anyone off, but most of our money comes in at the door and it’s a pay-what-you-can event, and we've always gotten hundreds of people to pay each event. I wrote the FU rider because I love snacks and junk food, so we try to have a really cool backstage area with tons of nice cheese, olives, all the newest and coolest kinds of chips and cookies, etc. It’s always rammed with bands who've basically never seen a rider before and are losing their minds, as well as (not naming names) a bunch of artistic regulars who aren't part of the event who just come up to hang out and graze and drive me crazy.

He’s just had a burst of creative energy and a song he’s been working on has finally clicked — he is thrilled. That crackling energy never lets up as he discusses his jet-setting lifestyle. “I don’t really have a home. I used to be based in one place, and my life was so hectic because I had to go back and forth all the time. Everything about my life is amazing except jet lag,” he laughs. After over 20 years of playing around the world, he’s figured it out. “In the US, I am based between Miami and Las Vegas — then I go to Ibiza. I’m based there for the whole summer from June to September. Other bases are London and Dubai for when I work around Asia. I have four homes now. It’s life-changing because I’ve never done this before.” As a man of the world, his favorite haunts spread across continents. Add these to your travel bucket list.

height of production and sales for the plant was 2001; in that year they produced 8 million albums on vinyl. Ninety-percent of those records were 12”s of dance music. The day we visit, reissues of albums by Dolly Parton and the Red Hot Chili Peppers are being printed, record sleeves falling a short distance into clean stacks, 10,000 per day. The lighting is dim, and machine operators walk through the corridors dressed like lab techs as they reach into chemical baths designed to dissolve nickel, but everyone seems relatively happy. “Yes, you’re a machine operator, but you’re pressing a record,” Baizley says of the 100-plus employees, all of whom he aims to know by name. One name in particular stands out though: Rinus Hooning, whose claim to fame is that he pressed Pink Floyd’s original Wish You Were Here LP (they seem to be Holland’s favorite band).

Jenneke holds a yearly jam session-style festival on the beach called Jam de la Creme, and the first year she invited guitarist Spike Van Zoest and Carrera to play. “We both said we could play there, but only if we can play with [Jenneke]. It was the first get-together for the band,” says Carrera. Now a four-piece which includes organist Midnight Mau, The Deaf released their self-titled fourth album last November. Influenced by the Hives and The Kinks, they’ve achieved a very organic sound with the album, which they recorded and mixed for 24 straight hours. “We wanted to sound like a band in a room,” says Jenneke. Musical festivals are held in The Netherlands weekly during the summer. Here are some must-sees.
BOSPOP, Weert In a city becoming rapidly infused with dance music and rock. The BosPop festival, held in the city of Weert, is a prime example. Headlined this year by ZZ Top, Melissa Etheridge, Gary Clark Jr. and Ed Kowalczyk, the festival also boasts several Dutch bands, like Navarone and Raccoon. NORTH SEA JAZZ, Rotterdam Originating in The Hague by Dutch promoter Paul Acket in 1976, Holland’s annual North Sea Jazz festival was brought to Rotterdam in 2006. When the 1940 Rotterdam Blitz happened during WWII, the city was damaged so significantly that it was torn down and rebuilt. Though Rotterdam feels highly industrialized and modern, it still seems to be unofficially recognized as the underdog for its “lack of culture.” For this reason there’s an extra push to bring the arts to the city. This year North Sea Jazz featured Chaka Khan, Lionel Richie, Leon Bridges, Hozier, and Jessie Ware. This impressive lineup shouldn’t come as a surprise: Count Basie, Ray Charles, Ella Fitzgerald and Miles Davis are all North Sea Jazz alum.

BLUE BOTTLE 2900 18th St, San Francisco Barista/General Manager: Jason I’ve lived in San Francisco for 12 years and about nine of those years I’ve been enjoying Blue Bottle. Each barista takes pride in crafting the perfect cup of coffee, whether it’s a shot of espresso or a pour over, they ensure that they’re only serving the best beverage. The best thing about working here is being at the forefront of a changing industry and showing that there’s so much more out there in terms of what can be delivered, by virtue of attention to quality and hospitality.
RITUAL COFFEE ROASTERS 1026 Valencia St, San Francisco Barista/GM: Jeremy I feel like Ritual Kenyan coffees are part of the reason I work in coffee at all. They can be funky, they can be fruity, they can have some savory elements, and they can have some vegetal elements. Coffee that grows wild in East Africa is the most interesting to me. That’s really where people are like ‘Woah, I didn’t know coffee could taste like that.’
FRONT CAFE 150 Mississippi St, San Francisco Barista: Chris You probably won’t find a more purist cafe anywhere. We only do single origin coffee; there are no blends. Blends are used for consistency so you can switch out coffees when they’re out of season, but we only buy our coffees at the peak of harvest and we get as much as we can.
FOUR BARREL COFFEE 375 Valencia St, San Francisco Barista: Grant Kind of as a mirror of how we treat our employees, we treat our farmers, our milk vendor, and everyone that way. We want to make sure everyone is well paid for their effort; everyone feels like they’re in a relationship. Every year, we don’t go to see what the top scores are for farmers around the world and just buy those out of a catalog. We go to farms, we meet people. Maybe a farm has really great land and really great ideas, but they just haven’t quite gotten off the ground yet, and they’re on the upswing; we’ll invest in that farm. We’re in it for the long haul.
There’s not really anyone else doing this type of craft. We cut our own ice cubes, our cold brew is a single origin, and we take care of every piece. Because we’re so small, we can do that.
Four Barrel roasts every bean on our vintage roaster that you can see in the shop. Every single bag of coffee is filled and stamped by hand. We also use our namesake, the Four Barrel sample roaster, to take a glimpse of the coffee before we commit to an entire batch.

Yannick Llunga, better known by his stage name Petite Noir, has at 24, already developed a sound that is uniquely his. Llunga grew up in Cape Town, South Africa, singing and playing guitar in church, and briefly dabbling in metalcore around the same time. Inspired by Kanye West's electro-heavy album, 808s & Heartbreak, he eventually began to incorporate deep electronic characteristics in his work, forgoing his previous metal style for a combination of chillwave and traditional African blues. He has tagged his current sound as "Noirwave," which he defines as “an African aesthetic and a sense of mental freedom. It is my way of letting go and breaking out into who I really am,” and has worked with artists like Solange and Yasiin Bey in addition to forming the creative collective, Drone Society, with his girlfriend Rochelle Nembhard. The international movement incorporates art, design and music, with members in places like Bangkok and London. “We support, love each other, and grow together, constantly learning and living through this journey,” he says of the collective. “It’s all about art in general. It’s a mindset. Once your mindset becomes Noirwave, you will unlock the aesthetic.” Llunga will follow up his first EP, The King of Anxiety, with his debut, full-length album, La Vie Est Belle/Life is Beautiful, out September 11. — Eda Yu

The Tale of the Secret Song Map Words + Images by

We were journeying through the forest on a quest to find the goddess Arianrhod who we believed had sent us a secret message from the heavens. She appeared to each of us in our dreams the previous night and sang a piece of dissonant melody. When we hummed the notes together, the deep resonances rustled the trees and shifted the soil beneath our feet. The movements were subtle, but we knew these were beacons meant to help guide our path. So... we followed.
108 . TRAVEL WITH PURPOSE
After a few dreamless nights the signs grew so faint that it was difficult to tell if it was Arianrhod whispering through the trees or just another sparrow grasping for a branch. So K-Po suggested we sample the local fungus to see if we could induce a vision that might help set us back on course.
Without much food or sleep to help buffer the powerful toxins coursing through our blood, our senses shifted quickly. We did not encounter our goddess as we had hoped, but a terrifying imp came to us in the form of a faceless many-limbed tree creature covered in mud. He tore open our chests and plucked out our deepest fears and insecurities, displaying each one by one for us to gaze upon their every gruesome detail.

Despite the trauma of this macabre exhibit we woke up lighter and with a new sense of purpose. We followed an unfamiliar sound to the east and came upon a large, growling beast with four round hooves. Suddenly two smaller beings ripped open the animal’s sides and ran screaming into the night! We would have thought this to be very odd were it not for the previous evening’s even stranger events. It seemed clear that Arianrhod had many adventures in store for us on this voyage.
We trekked through the night, following the hard, black trail that the round-hoofed beast had made, but we quickly realized that while our meal of enchanted mushrooms may have fed us spiritually, it did not nourish our fatigued bodies. We prayed to our inamorata to save us.
110 . TRAVEL WITH PURPOSE
Just as we thought we might collapse from exhaustion and hunger, we beheld two large boxes in the distance which were greener than any tree in the great forest. We stumbled towards the coffers and flung open their hatches to reveal the cornucopia inside. Our plea had been answered!
As we gorged ourselves on the finest delicacies we had ever tasted, we realized this was the end of our great pilgrimage. Arianrhod had sent us a song-map from beyond to lead us to a new food source. Thank you, oh thank you great goddess!

SOU N D J UD G ME N T Hotei Shares Japanese Film Soundtracks For Your Next Journey
Words by Tomoyasu Hotei
Japanese film has always been a source of great inspiration for the most legendary of Hollywood filmmakers. For over 30 years, Tomoyasu Hotei has been at the center of this world as one of Japan’s most beloved musicians, actors, and composers. He was the guitarist for the wildly popular Japanese rock band Boøwy in the ‘80s, and penned "Battle Without Honor or Humanity," the iconic theme song from Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill. As we gear up for the October 16 release of his new album, Strangers, Hotei walks us through his all-time favorite Japanese film soundtracks. — Emily Nimptsch
Seven Samurai
If I had the chance, I would love to try making music for an Akira Kurosawa film. Widely awarded overseas, this film is known as a masterpiece and credited with having influenced many other films around the world. I’m sure it would be really exciting if this work could be combined with the latest music that makes full use of new technology. Music and films have such a close and important relationship.
Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence New Battles Without Honor or Humanity
This originated from a series called “Battles Without Honor or Humanity” that was made by one of Japan’s greatest film directors, Kinji Fukasaku, in 1970. Based on a true story of yakuza conflict, it was quite popular and attracted the interest of many film fans. For the new version of the film made in 2000, I participated in the project as both an actor and the music director. The theme song of the original series was very famous, and is often referred to as the ‘007’ theme song of Japan, and so when they asked me to create a new theme song for the remake of the film, I felt a great deal of pressure. Imagining a knife being pointed at a man’s heart, and the sadness lurking inside, I drew from this inspiration in creating the theme song. The song was used in one of the film’s most impressive and memorable scenes where a procession of outlaws emerge from black cars at the funeral of the yakuza boss. Following this, Quentin Tarantino watched the film and later phoned my office and made an offer, saying that he absolutely wanted to use this song for one of his films. It was actually Tarantino himself who requested to name the song “Battle Without Honor or Humanity.” You will probably recognize this song now as the iconic theme song from Kill Bill. It amazes me how this song has come to be so widely known and loved around the world. Although many people do not know my name, I think there are few people in the world who have not heard this song.
116 . TRAVEL WITH PURPOSE
Ryuichi Sakamoto is Japan’s most respected composer and a wonderful pianist. I think the musical scales he uses are not merely those of Orientalism, but they incorporate a broader Asian temperature and humidity, and all of the delicate feelings and intricacies of the culture. This is such beautiful music, and something I believe that Japan can be proud of.
Godzilla
As with the theme songs from Jaws and Terminator, the theme from Godzilla from the very beginning gives you goosebumps and brings such a feeling of thrill and terror. Made in 1954 at a moment when the nuclear weapons issue was quite topical, Godzilla is an iconic film that hinted at this growing problem in society. In the story, the monster is created as a result of the nuclear weapons that humans themselves have created, and thus this became a work of powerful metaphor that expresses the selfishness of human beings and the harm that they bring upon themselves. As nuclear weapons continue to be a serious issue in the world right now, I’m sure there are many who will watch this film and realize for the first time the folly of human beings.
Samurai Fiction
This film was my acting debut in 1998. It was a really unforgettable time for me, and just earlier I had also performed at the Atlanta Olympics and played onstage with David Bowie. While we were in the midst of shooting the film, I was also on tour and during one show I fell from the stage and broke my right collar bone. As a result I had to do all of the sword action for the film using my left hand, which was incredibly difficult. The director, Hiroyuki Nakano, aspired to make a new type of samurai film that would be fashionable and cool, and the film was very well received internationally. The soundtrack is packed with a variety of music, incorporating everything from traditional Japanese instruments, to experimental groove songs, to rockabilly. It is often said that Tarantino took a lot of inspiration from cuts in this film when he was making Kill Bill, and I think everyone can notice that by looking at the opening cut.

Founded in 2010, Jester King Brewery is nestled in Texas Hill Country just Southwest of Austin, TX — a region which is most notorious for its slow-smoked barbecue brisket and paradisal swimming holes. The crew at Jester King has spent the last five years building a name for themselves by harvesting their own wild yeast, souring bacteria off the land, and perfecting a house yeast which gives each beer its signature flavor. Belgian farmhouse-style beers are a little unconventional and experiential by nature, which is just how Jester King likes to do things. With collaborations with everyone from Aaron Franklin of Austin’s own Franklin Barbecue, to one of Austin’s top chefs and restaurateurs, Paul Qui, and numerous breweries around the world like Prairie Artisan Ales, Mikkeller, and Evil Twin Brewing, Jester King is one of the world’s most forward-thinking and creative breweries. They are constantly pushing boundaries while remaining true to the tradition and artisanal craft of their forefathers in Belgium. Jester King crafts its beers in extremely small batches, which are then bottled by hand and bottle conditioned. Most of their beers are offered exclusively at the brewery (one or two bottles per person while supplies last), although some of their larger batches can be found in Whole Foods, Central Market, and other specialty beer retailers. Some of our favorites from the brewery include Funk Metal, a sour barrel aged stout, and their seasonal “Dichotomous” saison series. We also recommend you try their Atrial Rubicite, a barrel aged sour ale re-fermented with raspberries, which happens to be one of the most sought-after and elusive brews in the beertrading communities. The brewery itself sits on a picturesque farm-style plot of land and is accompanied by Stanley’s Farmhouse pizza, making it the perfect weekend destination for Austiners and tourists alike. Stop by the brewery on a weekend afternoon, grab some pizza, and finish the day at a nearby swimming hole.
Why does fall always have to be about Oktoberfest, Pumpkin and Harvest Ales? After spending the hot months drinking light, crisp lagers and bright, citrusy IPAs, we think it’s time to get heavy. The cooling of the air finally let’s us bring out those richer, more complex and yes, of course, darker beers that have been sitting in the fridge unappreciated all summer. Here are just a few of our favorites for your drinking pleasure.

A real hophead never truly tires of IPAs, but who’s to say we don’t get excited about a variation on our favorite style? And for fall, what could be more apt than the addition of some toasty, dark malts? Back in Black, the Black IPA from 21st Amendment Brewery, offers just that. This lovely, dark

“Blues Run the Game” — Jackson C. Frank A sad song from a sad man that lived a sad life. Perfect for an early morning drive after a late-night break up. “Catch a boat to England, baby, maybe to Spain...” Boarding a ship for a long voyage with no specific destination or purpose sounds like the saddest freedom ever.
“Rocket Queen” — Guns N’ Roses
“I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight” — Richard and Linda Thompson
“(You) Got What I Need” — Freddie Scott
“Fifth In Line To The Throne” — Camera Obscura Remember that time you and your best friend (the one you secretly had a crush on) sat in your parent’s car discussing the highs, lows and in-betweens until the sun started to come up, but you left the lights on and drained the battery, so you had to call your dad to come pick you up? Remember? That’s what listening to Camera Obscura feels like to me. Tracyanne Campbell’s voice is the reason mixtapes were invented. “Epidemic” — His Hero is Gone Living in Los Angeles, you spend an ungodly amount of time in your car. I don’t have the figures in front of me, but I believe it’s roughly 6,000 hours a week. Listening to this song LOUD is a good way to let off some steam while you’re trapped behind the wheel. “There Is A Light That Never Goes Out” — The Smiths “If a ten truck, kills the both of us. To die by your side, well, the pleasure, the privilege is mine.” Enough said.
“Everyday” — Buddy Holly Sounds like sunshine through the trees out the car window somewhere down in Florida. Hope and anticipation in a song. Appreciation for the life that’s passing by.
“Buffalo Springfield Again” — Neil Young This song is pure old-guy hope and enjoyment. Like your dad is telling a story on a summer’s day in the air conditioning of his Buick Park Avenue. Listen up!
“Tornado Of Souls” — Megadeth This sucker will get you pumped to rip the road. The opening riff is so sick and when the drums come in, the dashboard is a fifteen-piece kit to whack upon.
“I Got A Name” — Jim Croce Jim Croce’s voice is hard to beat when it comes to staring off into the distance and wondering what’s happening or what’ll happen next. This song is a declaration of existence, which can come in handy out there in the middle of it all.
When you’re looking to get into some trouble, wherever you are.
“Everytime” — Family of the Year For when it hits you that being peripatetic means you may fuck up every relationship you’ve ever had and hurt everyone you’ve ever loved but you still love them and you still love leaving and there’s nothing you can do about it.
“Living Without You” — Harry Nilsson My first love put this on a mix tape for me when he was on tour and I was in high school and it was the most exquisite pain of missing someone I had ever felt. As I repeat that scenario over and over again I always come back to it and it hurts just the same and just as beautifully.
“Elvis Presley Blues” — Gillian Welch I always test the mic at soundcheck with this song so it will forever be my on the road reverie. And how tragic and apt a song it is.
No one has ever gotten into a car accident while listening to this soul gem. FACT. The chorus was used by Biz Markie in his 1989 song “Just A Friend.” Actually, both of these songs are more than friends to me.
“Faces” — Clio I think this qualifies as Italo Disco. It has a driving beat and it’s got sick chord changes.
“Funkin’ for Jamaica” — Tom Browne This track is funkin’ awesome; you can’t help but move when it gets played.
“Love( Is Gonna Be On Your Side)” — Firefly Late at night this song will echo as a reminder that “love is going to be on your side” if you don’t get on any onramps that say do not enter on them. The vocal tape delay is inspirational.
“Clouds Across the Moon Supernova Mix” — The Rah Band I listen to this and I’m driving over the Earth in the Winnebago from Spaceballs. I should warn you, this might not be a good idea to listen to if it’s late and you’re speeding down a desert highway in a van full of your bandmates.
SAM BACKHAUS
“Who Gon Stop Me” — Jay-Z and Kanye West This sonic tour de force will turn any midsize sedan into a diesel-burning monster truck, ready to Grave Digger over any vehicles unfortunate enough to be in your path. Drive safely.
If you want to get sad in the back seat, this one works great.
