LEISURE IS LUXURY. It’s what we took to heart when making this Denver city guide and who better to look to than the city’s most innovative cultural, culinary and musical exports: we’re talking about bands like Tennis and A Shoreline Dream to the established restaurateurs behind Denver’s booming food scene.

Nicknamed the “Mile High City,” Denver fuses history with modernity, extreme sports with relaxation and booming industry with a mom and pop mentality. With remnants of the old west mixed with a distinctly urban center, Denver provides an experience for everyone. View the modernist facade of the Denver Art Museum or visit the Victorian home turned Black American West Museum. For lovers of the outdoors Denver is a perfect home base — its proximity to Rocky Mountain National park makes it a beautiful destination for both winter skiers and summer hikers. In between strolling outside and wandering its many cultural attractions, relax on any one of Denver’s many rooftop bars and restaurants. To find out where to go, we asked the city’s best where they dine, drink and most importantly, chill. So for those who need a break from their chaotic schedule or hectic work life — RELAX AND WELCOME TO DENVER.

MEET YOU R DENVER GUIDES These Denverites are experts in their respective fields and with all the hard work they put in, it’s no wonder they would know a thing or two about leisure. Learn more about the people who know Denver best.
A SHORELINE DREAM
The latest incarnation of their former project Pure Drama, A Shoreline Dream, formed by Ryan Policky and Gabriel Ratliff, is now a four-piece which includes Eric Jeffries on guitar, and Enoc Torraca on bass. Combining heavy electric guitar parts with new wave vox, the experimental rock outfit released their new single “Whirlwind” in September 2016.
BIG GIGANTIC
Based now in Boulder, CO, dance/electro duo Big Gigantic is drummer Jeremy Salken and saxophonist Dominic Lalli. Known for their clubworthy party anthems, they released LP Bright Future in 2016.
4.
PAPER BIRD
The most notable quality of indie country/rock six-piece Paper Bird is how in sync they are — with not one but three lead vocalists, their songs are all about harmony and polished rhythm. Springing from the same Denver scene as the Lumineers and Nathaniel Rateliff, the band worked with John Oates on their new self-titled album.
BRANDON BIEDERMAN
Over the course of 15 years, executive chef Brandon Biederman has contributed to the local Denver culinary scene in various ways, most notably with the opening of two Steuben’s locations and Ace. Biederman has also done great work outside of the kitchen, by contributing to various charity events and dinners around Denver.
BEN FOOTE
With a passion for drinks and bar culture, Ben Foote is the Beverage Director for Blackbelly Market. He previously left his mark on New York City, working at Extra Fancy in Williamsburg and Atera in Tribeca.
BRENT COWLES
After learning the guitar at the age of 13, Brent Cowles has been pursuing music ever since. After performing in group You, Me and Apollo, Cowles decided to go solo and is currently working on his debut Ep. His music is defined by soulful lyrics and a raw Americana aesthetic.
EDISON
Since 2014, this Denver indie folk trio has merged melancholic songs with upbeat feelings. Comprised of singer Sarah Slaton, multiinstrumentalist Dustin Morris and Grammy nominated guitarist Maxwell Hughes (formerly of The Lumineers), their debut album, Familiar Spirit, was released in late 2016.
ELEPHANT REVIVAL
This Denver quintet draws on a range of genres to create an eclectic fusion of sound and stewardship. Bringing together bluegrass, gypsy, and Celtic styles, the band is committed to sustainability and humanitarian causes, working with organizations such as the Conscious Alliance, Trees Water & People, and other nonprofits. Their latest record, Petals, is available now.
ESME PATTERSON
Esme Patterson is a Denver native who recently released her third solo record, We Were Wild. The indie folk rock songstress describes herself in 3 words: singer, gambler and songwriter.
HEAD FOR THE HILLS
Utilizing bluegrass and indie folk sensibilities, Head For The Hills has been performing across the United States since 2004. The quintessential Colorado band is comprised of Adam Kinghorn (guitar), Joe Lessard (violin), Matt Loewen (standing bass) and Sam Parks (mandolin). 5.
JEFFREY PETRELLO
With 20+ years of hospitality under his belt, Jeffrey Petrello is the current beverage director for Old Major. His love for food and connecting with patrons is reflected in his thoughtful bar programs and extensive wine lists.
KURT FUHRMAN
Kurt Fuhrman is the General Manager at Euclid Hall in Denver’s historic Larimer District. The American tavern focuses on comfort food and features an impressive list of 40+ craft beers.
MARY ALLISON WRIGHT
Mary Allison Wright has a background in music hospitality and a deep love for anything booze related. Since moving to Denver in 2012, she opened RiNo Yacht Club at the Source building, curates the wine selection at The Proper Pour, and remains an advisor to the Colorado Bartenders’ Guild.
NADINE DONOVAN
As the Executive Pastry Chef for Secret Sauce Food & Beverage, Nadine Donovan has leveraged her talent to develop pastry programs for three very popular Denver restaurants. At Stueben’s, Ace Eat & Serve and Vesta Dipping Grill, Donovan constantly creates innovative and seasonal desserts for the Colorado masses.
NICK LOWE
Currently serving as the Beverage Director for Mercantile Dining & Provision, Nick Lowe constantly finds inspiration from the relationships between kitchen and bar, as well as chef and bartender. Using his love of bold flavors, Lowe incorporates the use of culinary techniques to transform food products into the perfect cocktail ingredients.
TIM KUKLINSKI
As Chef de Cuisine at one of Denver’s best restaurants, Rioja, Tim Kuklinski is always thinking about food. Designing menus, working on recipes, teaching his crew and most importantly, working alongside Executive chef Jennifer Jasinski (a James Beard winner) can be described as just a normal day.
NICK YANNETT
Originally from Milwaukee, WI, Nick Yannett now lives in Denver, CO working as a physician recruiter during the day. The rest of the time you can find Nick camping, climbing, and snowboarding throughout Colorado and beyond.
SHANNON JONES
As the General Manager of Linger, Shannon Jones helps run one of Denver’s finest “eatuary” as they call it. Crafted from the shell of Olinger Mortuary, Jones and her team have transformed the restaurant into one of Denver’s best multiuse spaces.
TENNIS
Denver natives and noted sailing aficionados, Tennis, is comprised of husband and wife duo, Patrick Riley and Alaina Moore. The indie rockers are set to release their fourth full length record, Yours Conditionally, later this year.

In the Mile High City, there exists a symbiotic relationship between the outdoors and its urban residents. PHOTO: BAR FAUSTO
DENVER HAS ITS SHARE OF HISTORIC EATERIES AND CLASSIC AMERICAN DINING, but with a recent culinary boom, the city has become a top destination for foodies and travelers alike. After the 2014 renovation of Union Station, the transportation hub racked up visitors with its inclusion of both fine dining and low-key grab and go shops. With a high population of nature lovers, it makes sense that the city’s chefs would pay attention to where their ingredients are sourced. Many of Denver’s restaurants follow the local farmto-table mentality, while at the same time experimenting with more international flavors. So whether you have a more adventurous palate, or just want to feel good about where your food comes from, Denver’s got you covered. 23 .
The restaurant takes its name from the Carrettiera who brought goods from Southern Italy’s farms to its villages via horse-drawn cart. Pizza pick: you won’t regret ordering the clam pizza, topped with little neck clam, pancetta, roasted garlic and panna cotta.

CRAFTING THE PERFECT DENVER EVENING MODERN FOLK HEROES EDISON SHARE THEIR FAVORITE LINGER BITES
As the former site of Olinger Mortuary, macabre eatery and bar Linger, holds first place for its impeccable design, beautiful views of the city and deliciously crafted small plates from around the world. Denver band Edison met us at the bar to share what they eat and drink at their favorite restaurant. “Devils on Horseback consists of dates filled with goat cheese, a secret seasoning and wrapped in applewood smoked bacon. It melts in your mouth and they call it a “shareable” but I’m not quite sure you’re going to want to share once you have it because it’s delicious.” “When we’re in town we love to come to Linger. It has a great view of the city. You can come here for food if you’re hungry for Devils on Horseback, it is the best thing on the menu. If you like to take someone out to eat with a story, this place used to be a mortuary. It might sound really creepy but it’s actually very cool when you’re in there. It has a different kind of energy. And then the menus are in the shape of toe tags, which I think is pretty rad.”

Twist & Shout records remains the biggest and the most successful record shop in Denver, with lots of rare vinyl and frequent live performances.
HOW TO BUILD A KILLER VINYL COLLECTION 1. Seek out a local record shop. Buy Vinyl. Simple, right? 2. Talk to the people who work at the shop. They have great knowledge and can direct you to what you want or what you’re interested in. 3. There is an art to selecting good records, and we don’t mean by title, but by the quality and condition of the vinyl itself. Don’t be afraid to take it out of the sleeve — take a look and a listen! 4. TIP: before you hit play, check your needle for dust and when you’re done, always put your record straight in its sleeve. 36 .

MILE HIGH VINYL JOE LESSARD OF BLUEGRASS BAND, HEAD FOR THE HILLS, SHARES HIS LOVE FOR THE UNDYING RECORD SHOP “I’ve been coming here probably 10-15 years now. There’s a ridiculous pile of 45s they have here, always new arrivals every couple days. So I dig through things and sometimes find nothing. But I look for all sorts of music. 45 wise, I’m often looking for funky rare groove, soul and blues kind of music but really anything weird — lounge tracks, weird old country songs, or twangy stuff that could influence the bluegrass band. I love to come to record stores like this one and many across the country to become re-inspired and find new sources of inspiration, new music, old music. This why I love vinyl: it never dies, the format never gets old and it’s actually seeing quite a resurgence. I know in my band, we have to do vinyl these days because we love it and everyone is actually buying it. There are plenty of nights we sell as many or more vinyl than we do CDs, so that’s always really encouraging. But it’s even more priceless to just have to go dig through a whole stack of dusty crap and then find that one gem you’re looking for, or weren’t searching for and just stumbled upon. That’s my favorite part about vinyl. I’ve found myself getting into a lot of world music that way— just grabbing something because it looked interesting and ending up falling in love with a whole era or country’s music.”

It’s a good place to get some pool and some skeeball in and have drinks with your friends. Our friend group likes to hang around South Broadway because it’s kind of a special place to us. There’s the Hi-Dive and Sputnik and a few other spots like The Hornet that’s been around forever. We all live in this area so we’ve grown up musically here but also as a friend group.”
HOW TO PLAY SKEEBALL AND WIN 1. Like bowling, you roll a baseball sized ball up a ramp aiming for holes ranging in point value from 10-100. 2. Technique: Focus on the middle of the alley and don’t roll it too hard — this isn’t fastpitch softball. 3. Points: Try for the 50 pointer as opposed to the 100 hole which is far more difficult and not worth a wasted turn. 4. Height: It’s said the lower you are to the machine the better the roll, so try a game on your knees. 55 .
