According to local artist Cam Parker, the thriving city of Tampa along Florida’s gulf coast, has a “thirst for art and music.” Its historic Ybor City neighborhood, developed by Cuban and Spanish cigar factories at the turn of the 20th century, is now one of the city’s biggest destinations, but pockets of culture are springing up all over. Here the artist communities have an authenticity that you might not encounter in other major metropolises, and a desire for socially conscious growth and expansion. As artist Bekky Beukes says, “There are many humans here in Tampa and St. Pete with good hearts, the ones who set the world on fire.”

SE M I NO L E TRI BE You’ve undoubtedly noticed the “Seminole” in our name, Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. It stands for the Seminole Tribe of Florida,” an American Indian Tribe known for its unconquered status, because it never signed a peace treaty with the United States Government. On the business side, the Seminole Tribe is also known for its successful casinos and its acquisition of Hard Rock International in 2007. Culturally, the Tribe is best known for its colorful patchwork clothing, for its “chickee” huts constructed in Everglades camps and for dugout canoes carved out of wood and used for transportation along a network of Florida waterways. Here are a few more things you may not know about the culture of the Seminole Tribe of Florida. It functions with a matrilineal, clan-based culture, different from the culture of Europeans who settled in North America beginning in the 1600s. The
eight Seminole Tribe clans are the Bear, Panther, Otter, Wind, Snake, Bird, Deer and Bigtown. The Seminole Tribe of Florida pioneered Indian Gaming with the 1979 opening of a high-stakes bingo hall on the Hollywood Seminole Reservation. The Seminoles also manage extensive cattle ranches and are considered to have one of Florida’s largest cattle operations. They own citrus and other agricultural interests, a petroleum distribution company and gas stations, as well as convenience stores. The Seminoles directly employ more than 20,000 persons, including more than 10,000 in their Florida gaming operations. In addition, the Tribe generates billions of dollars in economic impact in Florida and elsewhere through vendor contracts and indirect spending spun off from its gaming and governmental operations, as well as other businesses.

“My favorite place to be in Florida is outside on my mothers verandah during a typical Floridian downpour or in my studio painting while the wind howls. I love the beaches but not more than when it storms here.” — Bekky Beukes
“The Riverwalk in Curtis Hixon Park at night is a must see for anyone new to the area or just visiting. It’s stunning and safe. You can jog along the boardwalk or pull up a bench and watch the overhead light show.”

“I’m a big fan of Pass-a-Grille. It’s got a cool charm to it. It’s not as crowded as St. Pete beach. There is a rock jetty with a paved path on it, that extends a few hundred feet out into the gulf, and at night it’s a good place to star-gaze.” — J. T. Brown

“I love that Tampa is a legitimate breeding ground for true freaks, weirdos, outsiders, and eccentrics. While many cities market themselves by promising to ‘stay weird’ — Tampa just is weird in a beautifully uncelebrated and undefined way. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else in the world.” — Jeremy Gloff

ampa hosts various events like Pride parade, city-wide mural festival, Shine, and much more. The city-wide pirate parade and music festival, Gasparilla, is one of the most esteemed events in the city, and certainly one of the longest standing — it’s been going strong on the streets of Tampa since 1904. Celebrating the mythical Spanish pirate, captain José Gaspar, the alcohol-free celebration is the 3rd largest parade in the US. 41
