LEISURE IS LUXURY. It’s what we took to heart when making this Madison city guide and who better to look to than the city’s most innovative cultural, culinary and musical exports: we’re talking about bands like Lost Lakes and Phox to the established restaurateurs behind Madison’s booming food scene. Nicknamed Mad City, this midwest liberal haven is often compared to west coast counterpart Berkeley, for both its left leaning politics and high student population. Whether enjoying the summer months or managing the frigid winters, the people of Madison are notoriously active despite sub zero temperatures — you’ll often find residents biking in blizzards or jogging through the rain. With such harsh conditions comes an equally intense love for bars, comfort food (cheese curds anyone?) and down time. Any Madisonite will tell you that nothing beats hanging out on the Memorial Union Terrace with a drink in hand and a view of the lake. To find out where to go, we asked the city’s best where they dine, drink and most importantly, chill. So for those who need a break from their chaotic schedule or hectic work life — RELAX AND WELCOME TO MADISON.

MEET YOU R MADISON GUIDES These Madisonites are experts in their respective fields and with all the hard work they put in, it’s no wonder they would know a thing or two about leisure. Learn more about the people who know the city best.

ANNA VOGELZANG

Although she was born in Massachusetts and put her career into high gear in Pennsylvania, Anna Vogelzang now reps Madison with her nuanced take on indie folk. She uses various instruments and sparsely arranged percussion and strings, giving her songs a strong impact while leaving room for her signature vocals. With a solid addition to her discography released last year, her artistic dregs are far from spent.

ARI HERSTAND

The multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, author, and actor began his career in Minnesota, but his childhood roots trace back to Madison. As much of a one-man-band as he is a collaborator, Herstand’s ethereal folk-rock features an inventive use of looping, thoughtful lyrics, and a healthy respect for harmony. His approach lends itself to memorable live performances and a diverse back catalogue. 4.

BETH KILLE

Vintage modulations and confident vocal affectations just scratch the surface of what makes Beth Kille one of Madison’s best allAmerican offerings. She’s been churning out pop-country anthems since the turn of the millennia, whether by herself, with a backing band or with Gin, Chocolate & Bottle Rockets.

BOB HEMAUER

Besides sharing ownership of the Cork ‘n Bottle Liquor Store, Bob Hemauer is also the wine director for both the Underground Food Collective and Tornado Club Steak House. His 15-year strong career in the beverage industry, sense of humor and taste in fine wine has made him one of the more reputable practitioners.

DAVE ZERO

Since taking over as the owner of MadCity Music Exchange in 2007, Dave Zero has solidified himself in Madison’s music community for over a decade. He now lives with his wife, Lauren, and clumber spaniel, Fancy.

JOSHUA BARRAZA Joshua Barraza helps bring traditional Mexican flavor with a streetwise LA attitude to Madison as the co-owner of El Grito Taqueria. Together with Matthew Donkey, he seeks to enhance the community by providing authentic tacos fueled by deep cultural knowledge and pride.

GWEN AND KYLE JOHNSON

As the owners of Johnson Public House and Kin-Kin Coffee, Gwen and Kyle Johnson have more than earned their reputation as the power couple of Madison’s coffee, food and culture. They prefer being hands on with their workers, who they consider family as much as their two children, and strive to become a light in their neighborhood for anyone in need of fellowship and a full stomach.

LEO SIDRAN

Having grown up in Madison with jazz in his heritage, Leo Sidran has an adept sense of groove and rhythm. Whether he’s interviewing fellow musicians on his podcast “The Third Story” or performing his funkinspired catchy tunes, his reputation is hard to match. 5.

LOST LAKES

PHOX

With only two singles under their belt, this collaboration between indie folk upstarts Corey Mathew Hart and Paul Mitch has already begun to make waves in the Madison scene. Their debut self-titled album is due out Spring 2017, which they are funding through Pledge Music. After a year of writing and recording, Lost Lakes are ready to make their mark.

The atmospheric alternative indie sextet defies genre. Fusing folk and pop, the band brings an art rock mentality to their unique arrangements that span not only an array of instruments but mood as well. Their debut self-titled album was released in 2014.

MEAGAN COATES

RYAN HUBER

For anyone wanting to play outdoors, Meagan Coates has more than enough know-how to help travelers of all kinds navigate the outback of Madison. With experience in travel companies, both localized and far beyond, she’ll tell visitors and residents alike where to go and what to see.

Madison is covered in the boutique menswear department with the help of people like Ryan Huber. He is currently the creative director and co-owner of Context Clothing, a widely recognized company that takes pride in its allAmerican operations and heritage clothing. The store offers premium leather goods made right in Madison and a denim repair service.

6.

SARAH ARTZ Dog lover, furniture maker and documentary buff Sarah Artz lives up to her last name as an entrepreneur for One-One Thousand. The company was started to help give financial stability and empowerment to artists, allowing them to turn their passions into careers.

RON ROLOFF Ron Roloff is the proud owner of Madison’s first CDs-only record shop. Launching in 1988, Strictly Discs now offers new and used vinyl as well and has over the decades, solidified itself as one of the best indie music retailers in the midwest.

UNDERGROUND FOOD COLLECTIVE Jonny Hunter is the co-founder of Underground Food Collective, a leading business in Madison’s food scene. The collective includes Underground Catering, Underground Meats, Underground Residency, Forequarter Restaurant and Underground Butcher. The collective specializes in pasture-raised meat from local farms and provides Madison with some of the finest quality food that is seasonal, ethical and local.

They have a lot of hiking trails through different types of forest: there’s a section through the Northern Forest, so it’s all conifer trees. They have a manicured proper arboretum with all the trees labeled with their genus in neat, perfect rows. It’s pretty surreal and great to walk through, great for fall colors too. HOW TO CHANGE A BIKE TIRE 1. Check the tire before you head out. If it's just a puncture, patch it! 2. If the problem is worse replace the tube: seat one side of the tire onto the rim, then tuck a new, slightly inflated tube inside, starting at the valve hole and working your way around. Using the palms of your hands, roll the other side of the tire onto the rim. 3. Pro Tip: Quick-release bike tires — always. 20 .

BUTCHERING TRADITION Jonny Hunter of the Underground Food Collective is leading the way when it comes to locally sourced, high quality meat. With a butcher shop, restaurant and catering service to manage, the collective is busier than ever. We were lucky enough to get a glimpse into the places and people behind one of Madison’s coolest and tastiest food scenes.

Where are we and what makes this place so special? This is Forequarter Restaurant, we are located in the east side of Madison in the Tenney-Lapham neighborhood. I’ve lived in this neighborhood for almost twenty years and when we decided to open this restaurant, I think it was because a lot of our friends and our community didn’t really have a neighborhood restaurant, so we were excited to create that. I think Forequarter has been a really fun experience for us as a group because it gives us a chance to cook creatively. We get to use a lot of ingredients from this region, and also it's kind of like a party. We like to have this space be exciting and vibrant, and I think when people are here they really enjoy it. We care about the food, but also we care about having a pretty fun atmosphere.

36 .

What kinds of things have you guys done to help cultivate that kind of atmosphere? Mostly bartenders doing shots off their belly buttons, haha. No, but I think we’ve made it a cozy space, it’s really tight and I think that we wanted it to be warm and friendly. Then in the summertime, we open it up and we’ve got streetside seating and it’s a relaxed atmosphere. We’re not trying to be overly pretentious about our food. We try to make it fun and also not take ourselves too seriously. Describe your sourcing process: How do you go about choosing where to get your products for the restaurant? I’ve been involved with small farms here in Wisconsin since I started cooking in the early 2000s and a lot of the farms that we source from are through people we’ve had relationships with for fifteen years. We really focus on sourcing ingredients from our community and buying from small farmers. There’s an awesome farmer’s market here where you can go to walk around, talk to people, find ingredients, and you can try new stuff, it’s pretty awesome. On top of that, I think just going and visiting farms and talking to the farmers. And we do a lot of foraging here out in the woods, where you can find ingredients that could be used in a restaurant, like mushrooms, ramps, all kinds of berries, and stuff like that. We could go foraging right now and get watercress. 38 .

Describe how cooking began as something you started for leisure and then became an occupation. So It’s funny, I don’t cook as much as I used to. You know, as the company’s gotten bigger, I spend more and more time organizing, working with people, and seeing other people cook. Now, honestly cooking has become something that I come back to as a way to focus and have fun. And now I do around 15-30 events a year where I get to cook all of the food, and that’s a lot of fun for me. So, in a lot of ways I’ve created that space for myself, where even though I don’t do that day-to-day, I can come back to why I started doing this which is because I love cooking, I love making food.

PAUL: They have a great selection of new stuff upstairs, but we’re down in the basement, browsing through the used records. We like to get physical with our music here, so it’s nice to find some inspiration. I’ve been coming here for probably 15 years. Back when I first started coming I was strictly looking for CDs and now I’m strictly looking for Vinyl, all of which are discs [laughs]. CORY: I’ve been coming here for the last ten years, give or take. They’ve always been good at tracking stuff down, even the rarer records. I’ve been asking for a Van Morrison first copy of the first pressing of that record. PAUL: I found a Buckingham Nicks record here too. CORY: What! PAUL: It’s legit!

ODE TO THE WEARY TRAVELER BARTENDER AND MUSICIAN JOSH HARTY ON WHAT MAKES THIS NEIGHBORHOOD BAR MORE THAN A WATERING HOLE

“I first came here about 14 years ago because I heard they had live music on Monday nights. I tried to get a gig and it took me awhile, but I finally got it and it was great. It has always been about four blocks away from where I live at most, which makes it very nice and walkable. They serve food till about 1AM, and start serving liquor at 11:30AM. So it makes it a very accessible place. They have live music, chess, there are no TVs in the building but there is a turntable and the bartenders play whatever they want. Which is great music and never too loud, so it manages to keep a lot of conversation at the bar. Even if you come and don’t know anybody you can know somebody pretty quickly. Great appetizers and a great beer selection. And just an overall nice vibe. Foodwise, I would definitely try the Bad Breath Burger or the West of the Andes with tuna. Two of the best things on the menu. If you’re looking for something to drink and it’s cold outside you got to have The Grog, otherwise Vodka is the way to go.”

FOUNDED IN THE MID 1800S, MADISON HAS SERVED AS THE CAPITAL OF WISCONSIN since the creation of the territory, with the cornerstone for the capitol first laid in 1837. The picture of this iconic building and that of a college student may be the two most associated images with the city. It makes sense then that the most popular street in Madison is State Street, which links the University of Wisconsin with the Capitol Square. From its industrial
