ALT-J K.FLAY ROYAL BLOOD LAWRENCE

WELCOME TO OUTSIDE LANDS

OUTSIDE LANDS HAS BEEN DISHING OUT SOME OF THE MOST MEMORABLE FESTIVAL MOMENTS OF THE LAST DECADE — anyone remember Jack White's surprise set in the woods? So in celebration of its ten year anniversary, we offer you this guide, with every recommendation coming directly from the bands themselves. Featuring insider info on both this year’s artists and the beautiful Bay Area, it’s a must-have for your festival weekend. If you’re looking to grab some brunch before heading over to Golden Gate park, Geographer’s got you covered (hint: get the pastrami and eggs at Wise Sons). Or if you’ve got that late night burrito craving — because who doesn’t — then listen to SWMRS and grab a bite at Oakland’s Cactus Taqueria. Featuring Alt-J, Lawrence, The Stone Foxes and more, grab yourself a guide and explore with purpose.

MEET YOUR BAY AREA GUIDES GEOGRAPHER

Formed in 2007 by Michael Deni, Geographer takes you on a dream pop journey verging on a cinematic experience with layered electro soundscapes and indie rock songwriting. Based in San Francisco, Deni released his third and most recent full length album Ghost Modern, in 2015.

THE STONE FOXES

The band itself puts it best: The Stone Foxes are San Francisco’s rock band, and it’s true. The group’s origins lie in the city’s Sunset district — just two brothers and a friend going to SF state, jamming whenever possible and building a sound that’s distorted and bluesy as hell: no fluff, just straight, good old fashioned rock n’ roll. Since recruiting a few more members, the band has released five full length albums, the latest being 2017’s Rage Against The Machine.

SWMRS

There is a strong punk history in the east bay and SWMRS are carrying the torch of that legacy with pride. It probably helps that the band’s drummer is son of Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong, who got his own start at Berkeley’s historic punk venue, 924 Gilman. While the band’s punk roots are strong, the addition of west coast vibes and surf-rock elements make for one hell of a debut album on 2015’s Drive North.

PAINTED PALMS

It wouldn’t be totally accurate to describe indie pop duo Painted Palms, as purely San Francisco based. The two cousins spent the start of their collaboration across the country from each other, sending bits and pieces of material via email. Perhaps their genre-spanning psychedelic collage of a sound is rooted in the early stages of their collaboration. The pair has released an EP and two full-length albums, the latest being 2015’s Horizons.

I'M PROUD TO BE FROM THE EAST BAY. I HAVE NOT BEEN TO ANOTHER PLACE AROUND THE WORLD THAT FEELS LIKE OAKLAND. ALL THE MUSIC AND ART COMING OUT OF OAKLAND IS VERY INCLUSIVE. I THINK THAT IS REALLY IMPORTANT FOR KIDS AND YOUNG ADULTS TO HAVE.

— SWMRS

THE BAY AREA HAS SO MANY AMAZING NEIGHBORHOODS it’s hard to choose just a few to feature. From a bird’s eye view, the Bay isn’t all that big, but packed into San Francisco’s 7x7 square miles and the hills of the east bay, there’s a neighborhood for everyone. From Oakland’s historic downtown to everyone’s favorite park in the Mission (looking at you Dolores), the Bay really does have it all. So while you’re not spending your days catching shows in Golden Gate Park, pick a neighborhood and start exploring. SWMRS recommends

THE BAY IS CONSIDERED TO BE A MECCA FOR COFFEE LOVERS, and it’s clear why once you dig into the area’s history. Folger’s, Hills Bros., and MJB Coffee all got their starts in San Francisco, and later Peet’s Coffee in Berkeley. But while the Pacific Northwest stakes a claim over introducing coffee to the masses, a new wave of roasters has firmly planted its roots in San Francisco, leading to the birth of companies like Ritual Coffee Roasters and Blue Bottle Coffee. Having now expanded internationally, the new scene has taken hold, spreading a greater appreciation for the art and craft of everyone’s favorite morning pick-me-up.

"I DO NOT KNOW TOO MUCH ABOUT THE LOCAL SPOTS IN SAN FRANCISCO. USUALLY WHEN I AM HOME I SPEND ALL MY TIME IN THE EAST BAY. TO BE HONEST MY FAVORITE COFFEE PLACE IS SEB MUELLER'S HOUSE. I HAVE MY OWN SECRET COFFEE RECIPES." — SWMRS

EAT

IF YOU’RE EATING AN AVOCADO TURKEY BURGER RIGHT NOW, YOU CAN PRETTY MUCH THANK THE BAY AREA FOOD SCENE FOR THAT QUINTESSENTIAL CALIFORNIA FLAVOR. The emphasis on fresh, local ingredients is huge in the bay, especially with the influence of food masters like Alice Waters, who is considered to be the mother of California cuisine and the organic food revolution. Plus you can find delicious food everywhere you go, not just in upscale eateries. For now we’ll cover our favorite Bay Area categories: brunch, burritos and Dim Sum.

SHOP

SAN FRANCISCO IS HOME TO SOME OF THE BIGGEST BRANDS OUT THERE like Levi's and The Gap (denim is kind of a big deal). But it’s also filled with incredible vintage shops, famously so in The Haight and on Telegraph Ave. When it comes to personal style, there really are no boundaries — there are those that keep that 60’s spirit thriving, and some with a more modern approach to fashion. But hey, you do you, and there’s really no better place to experiment than the Bay Area.

ALT-J K.FLAY ROYAL BLOOD LAWRENCE

Dapsul Zabelthau/CC Flickr

ALT-J UK trio Alt J, seemingly came out of nowhere with their debut album, 2012’s An Awesome Wave. Having since released two more albums, the band’s rise has been huge due to their highly distinctive electronic folk-rock. Combining world rhythms, a minimalist setup and multi-part harmonies, the group’s popularity shows no signs of dimming. Their latest LP Relaxer, was released this year.

SAN FRANCISCO SHOWS PLAYED: 5-10 OUTSIDE LANDS APPEARANCES: 0 NUMBER OF FESTS PLAYED THIS YEAR: 5 FAVORITE SHOW DRINK: Halfway through the set I have a nice hoppy beer or a glass of red wine. PRE-SHOW RITUAL: Joe and I do a lot of vocal warm ups before playing. FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS: The unexpected. BACKSTAGE PERKS: Decent bathrooms. RIDER REQUESTS: Gin and tonic, cherry tomatoes and pizza. FAVORITE FESTIVAL SHOW (ATTENDED): Foals, Glastonbury 2013. WHO TO CATCH AT OUTSIDE LANDS 2017: San Fermin — they’re one of my favourite bands and great live.

FESTIVAL MEMORY: “OUR FIRST TRIP TO AUSTRALIA FOR LANEWAY FESTIVAL WAS REALLY MEMORABLE.”

K.FLAY Originally from Willamette, Illinois, K.Flay AKA Kristine Flaherty, combines hip hop, rock and electro to create a genre-defying blend of tracks. At times, she has the lyrical dexterity of Lauryn Hill, jumps to Goldfrapp’s sensual restraint, and then ends with the catchiness of new wave pop queen Santigold. The comparisons only highlight how diverse K.Flay’s sound is. Her 2017 album Every Where Is Some Where, is out now.

FESTIVAL MEMORY: “I JUST GOT BACK FROM AN INCREDIBLE FESTIVAL SHOW IN QUEBEC — BIGGEST CROWD I’VE EVER PLAYED FOR. 70K PEOPLE I THINK, WHICH IS INSANE.” SAN FRANCISCO SHOWS PLAYED: So many.

BACKSTAGE PERKS: Delicious potato chips — I hope.

OUTSIDE LANDS APPEARANCES: 1

Also my a totally different audience and buds Louis the Child. experience than a club show.

ROYAL BLOOD Despite only consisting of two members, Royal Blood’s sound is anything but small. Wielding a heavily distorted bass and drum set, the English rockers harken back to White Stripes era simplicity. The duo’s second and most recent album, How Did We Get So Far? was released this year.

SAN FRANCISCO SHOWS PLAYED: 2 OUTSIDE LANDS APPEARANCES: 0 NUMBER OF FESTS PLAYED THIS YEAR: 20 FAVORITE SHOW DRINK: Tequila PRE-SHOW RITUAL: Show conditions. FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS: Playing to new people and showing off on a big stage.

LAWRENCE Lawrence is led by prodigal siblings, Clyde (23) and Gracie Lawrence (20). Combining blues, pop and soul, the group gives a spectacular show with powerhouse vocals, and shredding solos on keyboard, guitar and horns. With such a mastery for their instruments at such a young age, the music feels sophisticated with a throw back to the original prodigy of soul, Stevie Wonder. The group is currently on tour following this year’s release of their second album, Breakfast.

SAN FRANCISCO SHOWS PLAYED: 3 OUTSIDE LANDS APPEARANCES: 0 NUMBER OF FESTS PLAYED THIS YEAR: 8 FAVORITE SHOW DRINK: Whiskey (Water for Gracie) PRE-SHOW RITUAL: We dedicate each show to someone and do a little chant to get ourselves pumped up.
