Hi! I am Sinitta, and I am a makeup and body artist based in Nairobi. I am a jack off all trades, and through creating content for Cultured Ego, a webiste I founded in 2013 to showcase the alternative African scene, I found my passion, makeup and body art. I started off doing an internship at Suzie Beauty and a bit of freelance after. I then worked at MAC Cosmetics and then started life as a freelance makeup artist again, in Feb 2016. That was the most exciting year of my career where I acheived a lot of my most treasured accomplishments. Since then I have been working on a range of different projects, Some client work, some collaborative projects that I have worked on with some of my most respected peers in Kenya, and Africa, and some of my very own. I must admit I have been gone for a minute! I have been trying to figure out how to best share my work with you! I started the Cultured Issue as a means to keep you up dated on all the cool stuff I was working on and wanted to share it on a monthly basis. I decided, the way to best showcase this was on a quaterly basis, and with that I would like to personally share with you what I have been up to! I enjoy working with innovators, creatives, people that love pushing boundaries and creatives that are looking to bring their vision to life! My joy is making something tangible of someones imagination!

It has been a long time since I Worked with Zack, and this particular project was inspired by my very first personal collaborative project as a makeup artist in Kenya, back in 2013. Zack shot it and Karun was the muse! It was a novel concept that recieved an immense reaction, the diversity of the looks and the creativity of photography and makeup were a hit. We wanted to revisit that concept and birthed, ‘I like my Paint’.

COLOURED RAIN PHOTOGRAPHER - LYRA AOKO MODEL - ROEMARY KIMANI CRATIVE DIRECTOR AND MAKEUP ARTIST - SINITTA AKELLO More often than not, I like to collaborate and creative direct a photoshoot. I collaborated with Lyra Aoko and Rosemary to create “Coloured Rain”. With every shoot nothin ever goes as planned! I originally wanted to shoot out doors using natural light with a background I created out of wrapping paper that ended up giving us mabati (corregated steel) vibes rather than what I had imaged! Then Trust the sun to hide its pretty face on a day we wanted it to show its fullest potential! In the end we experimented with gels and actually used the wrapping paper to create a gel lighting effect! I love a wet makeup look! There is something about dewy skin and gels that keeps me re-imagining concepts that use this technique. Dewy Skin and Gels - a marriage made in heaven! The smokey eye was inspired by Rosemary herself! I did a smokey eye for her on a previous set we worked together on, she looked up at me and I said “I have to shoot a smokey eye editorial with you! - “Coloured Rain”
