Did you know we’ve got a part of the Yorkshire Dales National Park right here in Cumbria? This lush patchwork of green valleys and high heather moorland is dotted with traditional market towns and villages; and boasts some fantastic cycling and walking trails. Here, you’ll find mediaeval ruins, family friendly attractions, an abundance of local shops, and some fantastic places to eat and drink. Whether you’re seeking town or countryside, there’s plenty to discover - and some stunning places to stay, too. Throughout the summer months, traditional country shows offer a great family day out; while in winter, Christmas markets and fairs bring seasonal festivities centre stage. Escape the hustle and bustle of daily life and recharge your batteries in this peaceful area. See historic stone circles, cycle the Lakes & Dales loop, and get off the beaten path to discover an area you’ll never want to leave.

Visit charming towns and villages: begin your journey across the Dales in Kendal, where the ruins of Kendal Castle stand proud on a hilltop and offer stunning views across the town. Then it’s on to Sedbergh: England’s official book town. Be sure to check out its Book Shelter', located in a disused bus stop! Nearby, the pretty market town of Kirkby Lonsdale boasts a wide variety of atmospheric pubs and shops. Don’t miss its annual Christmas Fair, packed with festive cheer.

For nature, visit the secluded Dentdale Valley, with its bluebell covered woodlands. Discover a hidden bird reserve on Killington Lake. Explore the charming Smardale Gill Nature Reserve. The area is also home to England’s highest mainline station, Dent Train Station: it boasts some truly spectacular views as you travel along the Settle to Carlisle railway line.

Immerse yourself in a rich arts and culture scene with theatre, live music, comedy and independent cinema in Kendal. There’s also a packed calendar of festivals and events; while Sedbergh is England’s official book town. There’s plenty to entertain younger visitors here. In the summer months, visit traditional country shows and learn about farming, food and the countryside around us. In winter, celebrate the festive season with a family day out at a Christmas fair.

Local food & drink takes centre stage at quality pubs, restaurants and delis across the area. Don’t miss the Sedbergh Artisan Markets, held one Saturday a month in summer, highlighting the best of local produce.

If it’s unspoilt tranquillity you’re looking for, the landscapes of the Lakes & Dales invite you to reflect and recharge. This unspoilt corner of Cumbria is home to Cautley Spout: England’s highest waterfall above ground; and the peaceful beauty of the Howgill Fells.

Step back in time and learn about the local history with a visit to the Ancient Castles of Mallerstang, including Lammerside Castle and Pendragon Castle. Legend has it that the latter was the site of Uther Pendragon’s death.
