Whether you are a nurse, allied health professional, midwife, paramedic or diagnostic radiographer, or a professional working within social work, psychology, children, families, young people or sports and exercise health, I hope you will find something in our portfolio to support your ongoing development. I believe that there has never been a greater time for healthcare professionals and those working within society, to look at their ongoing development. As the shape of services changes, the scope and remit of professional practice develops over time and many organisations are faced with workforce challenges. It’s in these times that we need to remember that learning and personal development are key to lifelong learning, job satisfaction and the care and interactions that we provide on a daily basis. Here at the University of Cumbria we have many years’ experience in providing continuing professional development which can lead to an academic award or be undertaken to support the development of knowledge and skills of an individual. Furthermore, many of our modules and programmes can be studied online or may have a combination of face to face and online learning in recognition of the advances we have in technology and the demands on busy individuals in their professional lives. I am proud of the programmes we offer here at the University and do hope you will take the time to be part of our community and learn with us.

From Certificate to Masters level, our CPD programmes are practical and accessible, making the most of technology so that you can combine study with your busy work and home life. With our flexible approach, you can choose either full-time or part-time programmes, with start points in January, March and September each year. With the option to study single modules and full programmes, you can build your own programme and study at a pace that suits you. Many of our modules and programmes are available by distance learning or involve a combination of classroom and online learning. Our excellent personal tutors give you one-to-one support to help you make the right choices. We offer a wide range of practice development programmes, which are detailed on the following pages. These include specific pathways – for example, in acute and critical care – where you will follow a predetermined module diet. Within the generic Practice Development awards, we’ve kept the number of core modules to a minimum to allow you maximum choice, so that you really can pick and mix those modules that best suit you. If you can’t find the module you are looking for, our negotiated learning and work-based learning modules offer you a bespoke option to study the subject of your choice, with the support of an academic supervisor from start to finish. Details about the individual modules are provided at the end of this prospectus.
