THE COMMUNITY GATHERS

The prelude signifies the beginning of worship. You are invited to be in a spirit of prayer and meditation. Please silence all mobile communication devices.

PRELUDE

GREETING

INTROIT

Introit and Kyrie (from Requiem) — Bob Chilcott

Grant them eternal rest, O Lord, and light perpetual shine on them. Lord have mercy. Christ have mercy.

†CALL TO WORSHIP

Throughout our lives

You, Lord, are with us

When our grief is more than we can bear, You, Lord, are with us

In all we experience, we praise Your name because You, Lord, are with us

†HYMN OF PROCESSION

#702 Sing with All the Saints in Glory — HYMN TO JOY

†AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

†GLORIA PATRI

#71 Glory Be to the Father — GREATOREX Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Amen.

CELEBRATION OF THE SAINTS

CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER

O God, we give you thanks for the saints who have gone before us— those we remember and mourn today, and those in the great cloud of witnesses who were strangers to us on earth but will be kin to us in heaven. Help us to realize that we are part of each other, part of the whole world, intertwined as a net. Broaden our thinking, stretch our imagination; make us aware that, in both giving and taking, we are part of the whole. May we build upon the foundation of faith laid for us, seeking community that transcends time and space, constituted by your body, broken for us. Amen.

(Adapted from a prayer by Jean Murdoch)

CANTICLE

Agnus Dei (from Requiem) Chilcott

O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, grant them rest, eternal rest.

WE HEAR THE WORD PROCLAIMED

SCRIPTURE — Revelation 21:1-6

This is the word of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God.

SERMON

OFFERTORY

WE RENEW OUR COMMITMENT

Offertorio (from Requiem) — Chilcott

Lord Jesus Christ, King of glory, free the souls of all the faithful departed from the deep pit. Free them from the jaws of the lion, lest they fall into darkness. In praise we offer to thee, Lord, sacrifices and prayers. Receive them for the souls of those we remember this day. Make them, Lord, pass from death to life, as thou didst promise Abraham and his seed.

†DOXOLOGY

#95 Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow — OLD 100th Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise God, all creatures here below; praise God above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

†PRAYER OF DEDICATION

Loving God, without You we would be nothing. Help us to give back to others in the way that you have given to us. Your love guides us, protects us, and models for us the ways in which we are called to live. All that we are and all that we have is yours. May our offerings be just part of what we give to you this day and always, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

WE CELEBRATE HOLY COMMUNION

The congregation is invited to follow the communion liturgy beginning on page 12 of the hymnal.

INVITATION TO COMMUNION

Christ our Lord invites to his table all who love him, who earnestly repent of their sin and seek to live in peace with one another. Therefore, let us confess before God and one another.

CONFESSION AND PARDON

RESPONSE

Thou Knowest, Lord (from Requiem) — Chilcott Thou knowest, Lord, the secrets of our hearts; shut not thy merciful ears to our prayer; but spare us, Lord most holy, O God most mighty, O holy and merciful Saviour, thou most worthy Judge eternal, suffer us not, at our last hour, for any pains of death, to fall from thee.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING

RESPONSE

Sanctus (from Requiem) — Chilcott

Holy, holy, holy Lord God of Hosts. Heaven and earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who cometh in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

RECEIVING OF ELEMENTS

MUSIC AT COMMUNION

Pie Jesu (from Requiem) — Chilcott

Gentle Lord Jesu, grant them rest. Gentle Lord Jesu, grant them eternal rest.

CLOSING PRAYER

Eternal God, we give you thanks for this holy mystery in which you have given yourself to us. Grant that we may go into the world in the strength of your Spirit, to give ourselves for others, in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

†HYMN #711 For All the Saints — SINE NOMINE

†BENEDICTION

†BENEDICTION RESPONSE
