LET US WORSHIP Second Sunday of Advent • December 5, 2021

WE GATHER AS GOD'S PEOPLE VOLUNTARY

To God Alone on High Be Glory — Johann Sebastian Bach

GREETING INTROIT

The Virgin Mary Had a Baby Boy — arr. John Leavitt The Virgin Mary had a baby boy, and they said that His name was Jesus. He come from the glory, He come from the glorious kingdom. The angels sang when the baby born, and proclaim Him the Savior, Jesus. Allelu! The wise men saw where the baby born, and they knew that His name was Jesus.

CALL TO WORSHIP

O God, whose will is justice for the poor and peace for the afflicted, let your herald’s urgent voice pierce our hardened hearts and announce the dawn of your kingdom. Before the advent of the One who baptizes with the fire of the Holy Spirit, let our complacency give way to conversion, oppression to justice, and conflict to acceptance of one another in Christ. We ask this through the One whose coming is certain, whose day draws near: your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

GLORIA PATRI

#213 Lift Up Your Heads, Ye Mighty Gates — TRURO I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. #71 Glory Be to the Father — GREATOREX Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

After each prayer, the leader may conclude: Lord, in your mercy. All may respond: Hear our prayer.

GOD'S WORD PROCLAIMED CANTICLE SCRIPTURE Luke 3:1-6

Gentle Mary Laid Her Child — arr. Michael Ryan In the fifteenth year of the reign of Emperor Tiberius, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, and Herod was ruler of Galilee, and his brother Philip ruler of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias ruler of Abilene, during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness. He went into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, as it is written in the book of the words of the prophet Isaiah, “The voice of one crying out in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be made low, and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways made smooth; and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.’” (NRSV) This is the word of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God.

SERMON

"The Heart of Christmas: Peace"

OUR RESPONSE TO THE WORD AND THANKSGIVING INVITATION TO OFFERING OFFERTORY

How Far Is It to Bethlehem? — arr. Molly Ijames How far is it to Bethlehem? Not very far. Shall we find a stable room lit by a star? Can we see the little child, is He within? If we lift the wooden latch, may we go in? May we pet the creatures there, oxen or sheep? May we peek like them and see Jesus asleep? If we touch His tiny hand, will He awake? Will He know we’ve come so far just for His sake? Great kings have precious gifts, and we have naught; little smiles on our little lips are all we’ve brought. For God in his mother’s arms slumbers so deep. Here on this bed of straw, sleep, Jesus, sleep.

DOXOLOGY

#221 In the Bleak Midwinter — CRANHAM What can I give him, poor as I am? If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb; if I were a Wise Man, I would do my part, yet what I can I give him: give my heart.

† PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

Almighty and forgiving God, we your unworthy servants give you most humble thanks for all your goodness and loving kindness, to us and to all whom you have made. We bless you for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all for your immeasurable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ, for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. Give us such an awareness of your mercies, that our hearts may be thankful, and that we may show

4

forth your praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up ourselves to your service and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

WE CELEBRATE HOLY COMMUNION INVITATION TO COMMUNION

Christ our Lord invites to his table all who love him, who earnestly repent of their sin and seek to live in peace with one another. Therefore, let us confess before God and one another.

CONFESSION AND PARDON

Merciful God, we confess that we have not loved you with our whole heart. We have failed to be an obedient church. We have not done your will, we have broken your law, we have rebelled against your love, we have not loved our neighbors, and we have not heard the cry of the needy. Forgive us, we pray. Free us for joyful obedience, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Hear the good news: Christ died for us while we were yet sinners; that proves God's love toward us. In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven! In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven! Glory to God. Amen

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. The pastor gives thanks appropriate for the occasion, remembering God's acts of salvation, and concludes: And so, with your people on earth and all the company of heaven we praise your name and join their unending hymn: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might. Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The pastor continues the thanksgiving. The institution of the Lord's Supper is recalled. The pastor concludes: And so, in remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus Christ, we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving as a holy and living sacrifice in union with Christ's offering for us, as we proclaim the mystery of faith. Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again. The pastor invokes the present work of the Holy Spirit and then praises the Trinity, concluding: 5

All honor and glory is yours, almighty Father, now and forever. Amen. THE LORD'S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

RECEIVING OF ELEMENTS RESPONSE

Comfort, Comfort Ye, My People — arr. Howard Helvey Comfort, comfort ye my people, speak ye peace, thus saith our God; comfort those who sit in darkness, mourning 'neath their sorrow's load. Speak ye to Jerusalem of the peace that waits for them; tell her that her sins I cover, and her warfare now is over. Make ye straight what long was crooked, make the rougher places plain; let your hearts be true and humble, as befits His holy reign. For the glory of the Lord now o'er earth is shed abroad; and all flesh shall see the token that the word is never broken.

CLOSING PRAYER

Eternal God, we give you thanks for this holy mystery in which you have given yourself to us. Grant that we may go into the world in the strength of your Spirit, to give ourselves for others, in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

BENEDICTION

BENEDICTION RESPONSE

Go, Tell It On the Mountain — arr. William Farley Smith Go, tell it on the mountain, over the hills and everywhere; go, tell it on the mountain, that Jesus Christ is born. While shepherds kept their watching o'er silent flocks by night, behold throughout the heavens there shown a holy light. Go, tell it on the mountain, over the hills and everywhere; go, tell it on the mountain, that Jesus Christ is born.

CHILDREN'S MINISTRY NO CHILDREN’S WORSHIP TODAY Because we celebrate communion on the first Sunday of each month, there is no Children’s Worship. K-3rd graders will remain in the service with their grown-ups to participate in worship and communion together. If you did not pick up a worship bag on your way in, they are available in the narthex and outside the East transept. We look forward to having your child join us for children's worship next week! IMPROMPTU PAGEANT Families are invited to our impromptu pageant at 10am (during Sunday School) on December 19. We will gather in the sanctuary where we'll have costumes for those who want to participate and share in the story of Christ's birth. Bring hats, scarves, or mittens for our Tree of Warmth which will support kids at Brunson Elementary to keep them warm in the new year. There will be no elementary Sunday School on December 19, we hope you’ll join us for the impromptu pageant instead. PRESCHOOL PAJAMA PARTY Preschoolers (infants - preK) and their grown-ups are invited to join us for an age-appropriate Christmas pajama party including telling the Christmas story and music! We’ll kick off Christmas Eve with a pajama party at 10am on Dec 24. Don't forget to wear your pajamas! CHILDREN'S CHRISTMAS EVE WORSHIP Friday • December 24 • 4pm • Sanctuary On Christmas Eve at 4 pm in the sanctuary we celebrate Christmas with our children in mind. This service which lasts approximately 45 minutes is filled with music and movement and tells the Christmas story in a way that connects with children of all ages. We do not offer nursery during this service but children of all ages are welcome and encouraged to attend. This year we will be asking that everyone kindergarten age and older wear masks so that we can make sure to do what we can to keep healthy those who are not yet able to be vaccinated or not yet fully vaccinated.
