LET US WORSHIP Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost • 11:00 am • September 13, 2020

THE COMMUNITY GATHERS VOLUNTARY

All Things Bright and Beautiful — James M. Bates

GREETING INTROIT Psalm 104

Bless the Lord, O My Soul — René Clausen Bless the Lord, O my soul; O Lord my God, how excellent is your greatness.

CALL TO WORSHIP Psalm 103:1-13 (In Unison)

Praise the Lord, my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name. Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits— who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s. The Lord works righteousness and justice for all the oppressed. He made known his ways to Moses, his deeds to the people of Israel: The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. He will not always accuse, nor will he harbor his anger forever; he does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us. As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him.

#98 To God Be the Glory — TO GOD BE THE GLORY

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

After each prayer, the leader may conclude: Lord, in your mercy. All may respond: Hear our prayer. 3

THE LORD'S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

WE HEAR THE WORD PROCLAIMED CANTICLE Psalm 25:16-21

Turn Thee Unto Me — Antonín Dvořák Turn Thee to me and have mercy, for I am desolate and sore distressed. Great, great are the sorrows of my heart: bring me out of my distress! O be merciful, look on my sorrow, see mine affliction, and forgive me all my wickedness! O keep my soul in safety, and deliver me! Let me never be confounded, for my hope is in Thee.

SCRIPTURE Matthew 18:21-35

Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?” Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times. “Therefore, the kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. As he began the settlement, a man who owed him ten thousand bags of gold was brought to him. Since he was not able to pay, the master ordered that he and his wife and his children and all that he had be sold to repay the debt. “At this the servant fell on his knees before him. ‘Be patient with me,’ he begged, ‘and I will pay back everything.’ The servant’s master took pity on him, canceled the debt and let him go. “But when that servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred silver coins. He grabbed him and began to choke him. ‘Pay back what you owe me!’ he demanded. “His fellow servant fell to his knees and begged him, ‘Be patient with me, and I will pay it back.’ “But he refused. Instead, he went off and had the man thrown into prison until he could pay the debt. When the other servants saw what had happened, they were outraged and went and told their master everything that had happened. “Then the master called the servant in. ‘You wicked servant,’ he said, ‘I canceled all that debt of yours because you begged me to. Shouldn’t you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?’ In anger his master handed him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed. “This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother or sister from your heart.” (NIV) This is the word of God for the people of God. Thanks be to God.

OFFERTORY

Hymn of Mercy — Dan Forrest Gracious Lord, Thy mercy filleth all the earth below; and from heaven's throne it falleth when to Thee I go. Mercy flowing, swift pursuing, like a river strong, sympathizing with my weakness; mercy suffering long. Mercy calling with compassion: "Oh return to me." Wounded are the hands extended, loving is the plea. How can I refuse Thy mercy? Whither would I flee? From my idol shrine, I turn, Lord, reaching up to Thee. Tender mercy of the Savior gently drawing nigh, with the blood that cleanseth sinners ready to apply.

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

Almighty and most merciful God, from you comes every good and perfect gift. We give you praise and thanks for all your mercies. Your goodness has created us, your bounty has sustained us, your discipline has chastened us, your patience has borne with us, your love has redeemed us. Give us a heart to love and serve you, and enable us to show our thankfulness for all your goodness and mercy by giving up ourselves to your service, and cheerfully submitting in all things to your blessed will; through Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen.

#121 There's a Wideness in God's Mercy — WELLESLEY

BENEDICTION

May the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord make His face to shine upon you, and be gracious unto you. May the Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace. Amen.

BENEDICTION RESPONSE

Amazing Grace — arr. John Ness Beck Amazing grace! how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me! I once was lost but now am found, was blind, but now I see. Through many dangers, toils and snares, I have already come; 'tis grace hath brought me safe thus far, and grace will lead me home. When we've been there ten thousand years, bright shining as the sun, we've no less days to sing God's praise than when we'd first begun.

CENTENARY SEEKS LEADERS The Committee on Nominations and Lay Leadership works in concert with the Senior Minister and staff to select leaders for the program and administrative ministries of the church. If you have a passion for Centenary, our mission to follow Jesus, make disciples, and transform the world, and want to live out your membership vow to support the church by your prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness, then serving in lay leadership is an excellent way to practice discipleship and help Centenary grow. The Nominations Committee seeks servants: leaders for Children’s, Youth, Adult Faith Formation, Senior Adult, Congregational Care, Evangelism and Engagement, Mission and Outreach, and Music and the Arts ministries, the Board of Trustees, the Finance, Stewardship, Staff Parish Relations, Property & Maintenance, Investments, and Scholarship committees, and to be delegates to the Western North Carolina Annual Conference meeting in June. If you are an active member of the congregation and wish to be considered for leadership in one of these areas please email Dr. Kinken (gkinken@centenary-ws.org) your name and area of interest. This information will be shared with the Nominations and Lay Leadership Committee.
