A CAPITAL CAMPAIGN FOR
CENTENARY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH 646 W. Fifth Street | Winston-Salem, NC 27101
OVERVIEW Over the last couple of years, the Board of Trustees and Executive Committee of Centenary United Methodist Church have been exploring the possibility of conducting a capital campaign to fund critical renovations of church facilities. These renovations would allow the church to better welcome and serve the community, to better accommodate Centenary’s current and future ministries and to position Centenary to achieve its new vision for the future.
THE NEED FOR RENOVATIONS The church is being called to take care of its facilities and to continually look for ways to use it for ministry both inside and outside its walls. The critical renovations will allow Centenary to: • Continue its legacy as a beacon of Christianity and Methodism in our community, nation and across the world • Witness to our faith and hope in the future as members express their willingness to trust in God and to join His work in the world today • Reflect the vision and mission of the church • Provide facilities that will meaningfully engage more children, youth and adults in their spiritual journey • Offer a visual statement of Christian vibrancy to downtown Winston-Salem and our community
PROJECTED COST OF PROJECT To determine the scope of funds available for a capital campaign, the church entered into contract with Whitney Jones, Inc. Whitney Jones, Inc. conducted 44 interviews, and met with over 70 members of Centenary between early March and early May 2017. A subsequent Survey Report recommended that Centenary set a preliminary campaign goal of $6 million. Following the completion of the Renovation and Design Team work and additional work by an ad hoc committee, on February 22, 2018, the Church Council, at the recommendation of the Board of Trustees, approved the following: 1) The 4th Floor of the 1930s building (estimated budget $1,261,256) 2) Floors 1-3 of 1960s building (estimated budget $3,473,696) 3) New construction of a 1930s building elevator (estimated budget $1,225,870) Within this total is a 5% contingency for any unexpected items. Any amount pledged over the $6 million will be used for capital improvements to the first floor corridor of the 1930s building.
I’m sure about this: the one who started a good work in you will stay with you to complete the job by the day of Christ Jesus. Philippians 1:6 (CEB)

FROM THE CAPITAL CAMPAIGN QUAD-CHAIRS When we were offered the opportunity to lead Centenary through The Transformation on Fifth Capital Campaign, the four of us began to plan how we would work together. Though frequently separated by work-travel and other commitments, we “quad chairs” have come to realize that God has connected our shared faith and love for Centenary to transform us into a team in ways we could have never imagined. Our faith has been strengthened with a closer look at our ministries and inspiring staff. Conversations with so many of you continue to be a source of encouragement and hope for Centenary’s future. Friendships have been renewed and new friends made. We have prayed together and asked for your prayers, trusting that God hears them. We have observed in you and known for ourselves God’s deep joy in giving. We believe that you, too, can also have these experiences by being a part of this campaign. Thank you, Centenary, for allowing us to serve God and to walk beside you as we enter the future that God is unfolding before us.
“Go and make disciples…” are Jesus’ words that inspire me to support this campaign. The need is greater than ever to learn and to tell the stories of Jesus. The kind of Christian education and warm fellowship needed for the 21st century will be enhanced and strengthened with renovated spaces that will be used for many years to come. Supporting this campaign is a tangible way to thank God for all He has made possible in the past and for the opportunity for generous giving today. It is a blessing to be a part of a congregation whose future is centered on extending God’s love and hope to everyone.
Nancy Cannon We have talked about renovations for years. The time has come – we must transform our facilities to meet the needs of our families – children, youth, adults and seniors, now and for the future. We need renovated spaces that send a welcoming and inspirational message to all. Our spaces must compliment Christ’s love and the love we have for all our members. They must send a message to all throughout the community that Centenary is a vibrant loving church that is inclusive and welcoming, and that through this community of faith, we can further God’s work.
Dek Driscoll When Jesus asked his Apostles to go and make disciples and to teach them everything he had commanded, he was speaking to us in 2018. Since 1930 , we and the Saints before us have done our best to follow this request. Now we are asked to think about tomorrow, to strengthen our ministries for children, youth and the community. I encourage you to be part of this Transformation on Fifth Street and participate in our campaign for today, for everyone, but most importantly for the future. I look forward to standing, arm in arm, with you on this next phase of the journey.
Tom Lawson I think this campaign is important because I believe it’s our congregation’s time to unify and to draw a line in the sand. To collectively say that this congregation loves this church, that it is a priority in our cluttered lives, and that we want it to be a vibrant beacon of Christ’s love now and for generations to come. I believe this campaign can be transformative to our church and can leverage our congregation’s talents and treasure to do two things: 1)help bring the little children unto Him 2)provide shelter and ministry to all of God’s children - especially the least of these. In this I believe our Church and our congregation can do our part to bring the Kingdom here, and I can’t think of anything I’m more excited about than that.

CENTENARY’S MINISTRIES Centenary continues its rich history of providing children, youth and adults with a wide variety of ministry opportunities to help members grow as disciples and to encourage them to serve the Church, the community and the world. Many of Centenary’s ministries are directed outside the walls of the Church to benefit those who are struggling financially and those who are homeless, making Centenary an important resource for the community.
“The new space will provide gathering spaces that promote small groups as well as larger areas that allow kids to be active and provide our children with innovative ways to grow and learn.” ~ Kristen Zaks
“I am very excited for new bathrooms on the fourth floor. The ones we have now are pretty scary.” ~ Abby Dwiggins
“Centenary became my church several years ago when I came to my first service with a friend soon after I moved to Winston. I felt the warmth and spirit of the congregation and decided to make it my church. I love the outreach of our church, the church family and those it serves. The doors are open to the community in so many ways and our congregation is enriched through this outreach as well as our many church services. Keeping up our church is so important to our congregation and all that we serve. I want this church to stay strong physically and serve others for a long time.” ~ Suzy Brown
“The future of our church depends on our children and cultivating their hearts towards Christ. We desperately need the space to accommodate and nurture our children as an integral part of our church family.“ ~ Erin Bonsall

“The new kitchen will be amazing! And opening up the walls will allow a better flow and ability to connect the whole fourth floor from one end to the other.” ~ Dale Ann Shealy
For the future: “We will attract more young families to our church.” For everyone: “The improvements will directly impact children, youth, parents, and anyone who needs a lift (in our new elevator)!” For now: “Our church family grows together in a shared vision as we support each other by renovating our church home.” ~ Reid & Natalie Gilliam
“Centenary became our home church when Chip and I moved to WinstonSalem in 1977. We were attracted to the talented people and strong programs. In those 40+ years, we have grown in our faith, and we are forever grateful to the heritage we found. We feel it is our responsibility to the congregation now and to those who follow to keep our home refreshed and up to date so that we continue to grow and spread God’s love.” ~ Carol Holden
“We are happy about the new elevator and that it will make our whole church accessible to everyone who comes to our church.” ~ Sarah Frisbie
“Who can truly fathom how the good news will be spread in generations to come?! The message is constant and timeless. The clay vessels through which it’s delivered must be malleable. If we are to continue growing Christian disciples, our church must incorporate new vessels for learning, and sharing, the good news. We (the church) must renovate our facilities to accommodate new vessels and more disciples!” ~ Greg Fox

RENOVATION OF THE 1960s BUILDING Renovation of the first three floors of this building would provide state-of-the-art, age-appropriate facilities for Children’s Ministry. This would include modernizing and updating this most critical space by incorporating creative design, technology, light and color. Safety and security are important features of this renovated area. The plan would provide for flexible space for multiple classes and ages to assemble together. The plan would create gathering spaces throughout the three floors, and allow for more space for Adult Ministry and multi-purpose use. Plans include a catering kitchen for more food service programming, and an art room for use by both adults and children. In addition to creating more (and better) space for education programming, renovation of this building will improve interface between the 1960s building and the 1930s building, greatly enhancing traffic flow on Sunday mornings.

MISSIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR RENOVATED SPACES Many members believe that the church buildings are used only by members, and that the buildings sit empty for most of the week. In reality, Centenary’s main building, the Annex and The Haven are used by many community groups and organizations every week throughout the year. Some groups currently using Centenary’s facilities on a regular basis include: AA, Never Lonely Again, and Inner Rhythm Choir (meet in the Annex) City with Dwellings, The Shalom Project, and a weekly men’s Bible study (meet in the Haven) DAR, Thursday Morning Music Club, ESL Classes, Kiwanis, Women’s Club of WS, WS Symphony, WS Girls Chorus, Koinonia, and SALT (a District laity class) (meet in main building) Other groups using the Church facilities less regularly or annually include: Appalachian State Teachers, Furever Friends, Stephen Ministers of the Triad, Save Our Babies Walk-Forsyth County Infant Mortality, Crossnore, Food Bank and NC Association of Choral Directors of America With renewed facilities come new and numerous opportunities for partnerships and service to the community. This will give us opportunities for innovation and collaboration that we have never had before. Church leaders recently appointed a team of members to brainstorm the many creative and viable possibilities for using the renewed facilities. The team compiled a list of potential uses and possibilities for sharing our space, with the expectation that God will continue to guide and show the way forward in the years ahead. Some missional uses and possibilities that were suggested include:
•Winston-Salem Street School – parenting classes, tutoring component, cooking classes •Art Camp for children – opportunities for children in need to explore art with Centenary’s kids • Hosting traveling youth mission teams or choral groups overnight • Second Harvest Food Bank – community kitchen cooking and nutrition classes for backpack kids • After School Program and Tutoring – for the children of Centenary’s current ESL students •Art Opportunities for Children and Adults – for Centenary kids and outside groups •Arts based ministry – with UMAR, persons with disabilities, cancer survivors or grief therapy •Crystal Towers – explore opportunities for engagement •Job development – retail skills for persons with disabilities
SUMMARY There has never been a more important time for Christian education and service to our community. Today’s $6 million capital campaign represents a significant undertaking for Centenary. Those before us who sacrificed much to build the beautiful Centenary we know today had faith that the church would continue to thrive, grow, and bless many generations to come. Although campaign objectives are stated in terms of renovations and updates, it is important to remember that the true and ultimate purpose of this campaign is to ensure the growth and vitality of Centenary so its members can continue building God’s Kingdom.

THANK YOU To those who have worked diligently, prayerfully and with sacrifice to make this campaign happen, thank you. Your dedication to this important campaign and your tireless faith in the mission and vision of the church is a gift to our membership and to the Winston-Salem community. It is with that same spirit and dedication that we look toward a exciting future as we realize the transformation of not only our facilities but also the revitalization of our ministries for now, for everyone and for our future.
“As Sara and I pondered our family’s early response to the campaign,we were reminded of the commitment ten leaders of Centenary made in 1929 (in the midst of The Great Depression) to guarantee the total remaining construction debt of $560,000. Surely, they are smiling on us today as we raise at least $6,000,000 to assure that Centenary will continue to be a beacon for Christ on Fifth Street. As I encourage each of us to prayerfully consider our financial pledge in support of this renovation, please think about what the poet Emily Dickinson wrote:’We never know how high we are, till we are called to rise; and then, if we are true to plan, our statures touch the skies’.” ~ Frank Rayburn, Ph. D. “It is with grateful hearts that we write in support of the Centenary capital campaign. All of us have enjoyed the legacy left to us by the Centenary founders, but many of the facilities, especially those used by our children and youth, are in desperate need of repair. Without up-to-date classrooms and gathering spaces, it is difficult to attract and retain young families. Our classrooms need to offer parents peace-ofmind, security and bright, visually exciting, updated spaces for now and generations to come. A legacy was left to us; let’s leave one for them. ~ Russ and Jan Cockman
“We are excited about, and fully support, the proposed renovation project which will directly benefit Centenary’s children and youth, who are the lifeblood of our church. To do our part in making this happen is a privilege indeed!”
~ Phil and Elizabeth Pleasants
