What makes us CUNDALL? Watch the video here
Every project is an opportunity to make a positive difference and challenge ourselves to develop solutions tailored to our clients’ requirements. We achieve this by listening, collaborating and using our local and global expertise. Whether we are focused on cost, programme or reduction in environmental impact, we look for options that will bring client benefit. We encourage innovation at every turn, but we understand this shouldn’t come at the expense of functionality.
Experience and commitment
A priority of all our projects is building strong relationships with our client and design team, based on open communication and Partner involvement throughout. Because of this, the vast majority of our work is repeat business. This produces better project outcomes, as everyone involved has a clear understanding of roles and responsibilities.
We expect our engineers to consider the implications of their design for every project as a whole, as well as commenting on wider environmental issues across disciplines. This goes beyond simply meeting the requirements for benchmarking credits, while also acknowledging that these are important as a minimum requirement.
These close relationships foster easy communication and also bring ownership of the entire project, which helps forge a oneteam culture to review pre-conceived ideas, share risk and overcome challenges. Crucially, it also makes projects more enjoyable for everyone working on them.
April 2022
Every project is led by a Partner / Director, who provides experience and guidance throughout the life of the project. Continuity of key staff has been fundamental to our success, and the success of our client’s projects. Our teams are committed to bringing added value, sustainability, integrity, technical excellence and creativity to the design and construction processes.

Added Value: Cundall Virtual Acoustic Reality TM
Cundall’s multiple award winning Virtual Acoustic Reality™ (VAR) is a unique and cutting-edge tool for both clients and design teams. VAR is set to transform building design with a combination of audio-prediction modelling and gaming-quality graphics. The Cundall team have combined the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset (with gaming engine and high-quality audio) with traditional acoustic modelling to take to clients. The development of this technology gives clients and project design team members an immersive audio and visual tour of a building before it has been built. The ability to hear how sound changes as users move through different spaces will enable valued decisions, for example in internal finishes, to be made based on experiential factors rather than numbers on a page.
Benefits of Cundall VAR The original purpose behind the development of the Cundall VAR system was to allow the predicted acoustics within a space to be appreciated, and the implications of changes to a design to be easily understood, by members of a design team including architects, contractors, developers and end users. The user sees a 3D representation of the inside of the building, including fixtures and fittings, furniture, finishes partitions etc., simultaneously hearing whatever noise sources are input to the model. This could be, for example: •
•
•
A teacher within a model of a classroom, assessing the clarity of sound reaching a student A piano within a recital hall, to judge the level of clarity and listen to the effects of reverberation and echoes within the room Various sound sources within an open plan office, allowing an operator to appreciate the benefits of providing specific acoustic treatments within the room.
April 2022
The Cundall VAR system allows clients to hear what a space will sound like before it is built, understand why they might need to invest in acoustic treatments and make informed decisions while a project is still at the design stage. Likewise, it enables architects and designers to appreciate how relatively simple changes to their design can improve the acoustics of a space, while also allowing them to immerse themselves in a 3D model of their design. For acoustic engineers, it can be used to justify where acoustic treatments are most effective and provides a very simple way of demonstrating this to the rest of a design team without resorting to complicated colour plots and charts.
9 Acoustics Capability Statement
Added Value: Cundall Virtual Acoustic Reality TM
Property developers, owners and agents will be able to use the Cundall VAR system to judge how any existing problem acoustics within a space could be resolved, or how a proposed building refurbishment could change the aural environment for end users. Cundall VAR also improves communication between the different members of the design team, giving each equal access to the design in a relatable format. The Cundall VAR can be carried around in a flight case containing a gaming laptop, controller, headphones and Oculus Rift headset – perfect for design team meetings where the kit can be taken to the meeting rather than asking members to visit static sound labs.on a page.

Bright Start Headquarters Dubai, UAE The Project is in Satwa, Dubai, approximately 300 m from Sheikh Zayed Road behind the Millennium Plaza Hotel and consists of a twostorey podium comprising retail and office use with a 31-storey tower rising up from within comprising studio, 1, 2, 3 and 4-bedroom serviced apartments. Cundall were appointed for the acoustic design of the building from Schematic Design to Tender Documentation. Being brought on at a relatively late point on the project meant careful consideration was required of any design changes that could result from our technical advice. The building is near a main road, district cooling plant and a mosque, so noise intrusion was of concern given that bedrooms were located on noisy façades and had floor to ceiling glazing. A noise model was created of the building to assess noise intrusion and appropriate glazing specifications were determined
Given the exposed balcony areas and potential high wind velocities around the building, particular consideration was given to wind induced noise on the façade.

Asharq News Services Dubai, UAE Our team undertook the design of an integrated multimedia financial news service production facility, comprising of 5300m2 space over four floors within Dubai International Finance Centre (DIFC). The project incorporates a newsroom studio, production studio, green screen studio, and current affairs set together with their associated control rooms. Support functions to studios are provided by edit suites, theatre screening, graphics and NOC engineering. A section of the DIFC data centre was provided to support up to seventy data cabinets with fibre cables transmitting in excess of 1500m up to the Asharq News Services demise. Due to the complexity of the existing base build distribution system, the backup generation system backs up the whole of the tenant areas. An innovative, integrated and resilient air conditioning system serves the broadcasting studios to deal with the high cooling loads while minimising the service distribution zones and maintaining acceptable acoustic performance. A section of the DIFC data centre has been provided to support up to 70 data cabinets with fibre cables transmitting in excess of 1500 m up to the Asharq News Services demise. A supporting network operating centre has been provided adjacent to the data centre for support. There are incredibly complex and ICT rich data, audio and visual transmissions throughout the spaces.

High levels of environmental noise were controlled in critical spaces through a combination of careful space planning and by upgrading the building façade constructions using secondary glazing for open plan operational areas and plasterboard constructions to areas not requiring external views. Acoustic modelling of the studio spaces resulted in a cost-effective solution for the interior finishes to achieve suitable reverberation times. In-house custom-designed acoustic treatment was also used for control of the acoustic environment in the edit suites. Through an integrated and collaborative approach with the client, architects, contractor and landlord the client’s vision of the space was achieved while providing efficient, resilient engineering systems and to a fast track delivery programme.

Cundall Dubai Marina Plaza, Dubai, UAE They provide a platform to share our passion for design, through regularly used items.
Designing to the WELL Building Standard will improve the office environment for all staff. This ensures a healthier working environment with the overall aim being reduced staff absences and greater staff retention.
Boardroom – acoustic wall and parametric designed ceiling
There are no water services provided within the office, however as part of the WELL certification biophilic plants are provided throughout the office. Condensate water from the FCU’s is collected within a small tank located within the office, with the collected water being used to water these plants.
Acoustic panels have been installed within meeting rooms both wall and ceiling mounted panels have been installed to ensure speech privacy and the best possible acoustic environment.
Lighting design has been carried out to achieve the highest level of efficiency with an overall lighting power density of 5.2W/m2. This is an approximate 45% reduction over the required standards.
The main challenges involved educating the contractor on the standards required and the quality of materials that were required to ensure compliance with the WELL Building Standard. Given that this is not the usual standard and is relatively new in Dubai, this was often very challenging especially at site level with all of the sub-contractors involved on the project.
Recycled cardboard tube walls in the 6 pax. meeting room
Recycled cardboard tube diffusers in the Cundall Lab
Another challenge is as structurally governed furniture is not usually something found within an office fit-out, it was a challenge to ensure the contractor followed the design correctly. Coordination with the PT tendons within the slab was critical and required a lot of supervision throughout the construction process. April 2022
There are number of features within the office that have been designed to re-use or repurpose old materials. UPVC pipes have been recycled as a lighting feature. Wooden pallets used for transportation of equipment have been repurposed and used as a feature wall finish. Cardboard tubes used for rolls of material have been reused as a feature wall finish and innovative cardboard tube diffusers form part of the air conditioning system

Jazan Mosque and Auditorium Jazan City, KSA Cundall were appointed to undertake an acoustic study for the Mosque and Auditorium in Jazan City for Primary and Downstream Industries Cultural Center. Existing project-specific acoustic design requirements for the auditorium or mosque were not available, so Cundall proposed good practice design criteria for the project to inform the study. The acoustic design strategy considered occupants acoustic comfort and the ability to easily understand speech within acoustically challenging spaces. In terms of internal noise levels, Cundall’s acoustic team assessed the existing building services design, undertook calculations to predict internal noise levels from equipment within acoustically sensitive spaces and advised on improvements to the design to achieve the recommended criteria. The internal spaces for the both the mosque and auditorium were complex geometries that could not accurately be assessed through simple calculations that would typically be used, for example for meeting rooms or cellular office spaces. As such, room acoustic modelling was undertaken for both spaces to accurately predict the acoustic environment. Extracts from the acoustic models are shown below.

With the acoustic advice provided, reverberation time requirements within the assessed areas were deemed to meet the recommended criteria. The use of acoustic modelling also removes the need for expensive mock-up testing. The project was successfully conducted remotely with Cundall based in Dubai and the Client based in KSA, with regular online updates between teams.
Cundall were appointed at a late design stage in the project, so any acoustic improvement advice was required to have minimal cost and design impact on the design. This was managed successfully through close coordination with the Client design team.

Dubai Creek Harbour Retail District Dubai, UAE Cundall were appointed by the client to undertake specialist design services on this large mixed-use project. The project comprises over 6,000 residential apartments, a shopping mall containing over 380,000 m2 of NLA, commercial office buildings extending across 100,000 m2 and car parking of over 15,000 car parks spaces spread across three levels of basement.
During initial dialogue on the project it became apparent that further support was required from Cundall. The rapid deployment of a Building Services team in both London and Dubai ensured that the architectural concept design could progress at an intense pace. The multi-country operation was able to integrate a disparate design team during the critical initial phases of the design and fully resolve all design fundamentals.
To succeed in achieving a compressed design and construction programme it was necessary for piling works to commence on site immediately after concept design delivery. The multidisciplinary collaboration both between the Cundall teams and with the external parties was able to ensure that this objective was achieved and allowed the wider design to develop after piling and rafts levels were constructed.
