Maritime Schools A cluster of schools managed by the Thinking Schools Academy Trust. Cundall were appointed by Bowmer + Kirkland to perform a study aiming to identify possible solutions for future NetZero schools. The performance of a typical school block was modelled for both summer and winter scenarios, aiming to incorporate the most appropriate passive design measures. A servicing strategy was also developed for this specific type of building to reduce energy demand for heating, cooling and lighting while meeting thermal comfort targets. The project required an evidence-based approach, where numerous options were assessed in terms of carbon, cost, comfort and constructability. The results of these studies influenced the design of Maritime Academy. To assist us in proposing the best design, Cundall has used: • In-house scripts and advanced computing tools to explore all the nuances of different design solutions • detailed modelling of HVAC • Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) from landscape to building scale studies. By working collaboratively with the client, we have been able to carry out more in-depth studies and assess the impact of different design solutions. This has enabled us to deliver a robust net zero design, minimize energy intensity, minimize overheating, enhance biodiversity and biophilia.
