The difference between data and information

What the relationship is between data and information.
Data is just facts and figures that have no meaning or links. When data is processed into information, it is given a meaning.

Information Information is where data is given some meaning, so that you understand what it is about.

For example, this is a list of airport codes in destinations where a travel agent has special offers. The codes are all 3 letters long. LGW is London Gatwick.
Relationship formula
To remember the relationship between data and information use this formula:

Information = data + [structure] + [context]
The information might need to be in a specific format, like a postcode, which is why structure is sometimes needed.
