o create and capture, to open up space, to make it all pleasing to the eye, that is the elusive challenge of interior design. My interest in the decorative art started well before I founded my design firm – SoJo Design, twelve years ago. It was not a particular moment, a particular experience when and why I decided on that career. Rather, it was because of certain qualities friends always insisted I had. The observation to detail, the understanding of proportions, of scale, the desire to always strive for the highest level of quality, the eye for elegance and style. And most of all that this art allowed me to create with spontaneity and sophistication.
Interior design allows me to be me... Welcome to the inaugural edition of Curated Living. I created it to share with you my inspirations, my thoughts on luxurious comfort, the people I admire, the places that no one forgets, the trends that affect culture. It is simple. Browse through the magazine, visit the designers, the sponsors, click the mouse, get all the details, shop, be inspired.
And enjoy!
17
18
The past twelve years I have been blessed to do what I truly love and to be exposed to people and experiences that invigorate my creativity. I have made a pledge to take a pause, every three months, and pay tribute to anything that stimulates imagination, innovation, and originality. As you scroll through the pages of our premiere issue, you too will be inspired.
In celebration, we unveil our features section with a fashion forward convergence of accessories and home decor, followed by great white moments of SoJo design, and finally arriving at a glimpse into my world.
Enjoy the journey.

Endless possibilities lie along the expanse of a blank white canvas for Sojo Design--a surge of fresh ideas are ready to permeate the surface in the commencement of a new beginning. Sofia Joelsson selected white to symbolize optimal potential for the 12th Anniversary of SoJo Design. The stark hue offers a solid foundation for inspiration to be built upon it and the versatility to be mixed with other tones to generate a number of outcomes.

eflecting back on the past 12 years of SoJo Design, Sofia Joelsson expresses that being given the opportunity to work alongside some of the industries most talented architects, developers and even the designers in her firm has been a major highlight in her career: “We’ve been able to learn from and teach one another which has allowed us to progress to the next level.

A song, shape or even an impactful conversation can easily ignite the design process for Sofia Joelsson. Gathering her savvy team of 15, Joelsson starts every project off with a giant brain storming session. Together, the phalanx of creatives conceptualize by bouncing around ideas and feeding off each others energy until they reach a singular vision. Through this intrinsic collaborative effort, the team has smoothly been able to execute its plan and bring over 350+ residential, hospitality and commercial projects to fruition. Using an experimental approach to her design process, Joelsson states that she enjoys mixing around textures and colors to create a unique yet uniformed end result: “I like to play around with how different materials meet one another such as stone and wood with an inlay of bronze to keep everything cohesive.”
46
Joey Accordino
She enjoys integrating natural elements in her designs and also frequently visits stone yards to look at the different slabs, “one slab has inspired the design for an entire project”.

The design aesthetic is filled with clean lines, à la mode adornments and intricate detailing. Although the general style goes in a more modern direction, Joelsson likes to toss in a few vintage pieces or a unique find from her travels to add character and warmth to the atmosphere. A sophisticated palette, sensible layouts and timeless design have contributed to the signature style for which SoJo Design is recognized. When Joelsson isn’t occupied with designing swanky spaces throughout the country or traveling, she enjoys designing her own pieces. She recently collaborated with Serge DeTroyer on a custom wine cellar and bar that is a steamed trunk on wheels that can easily be rolled out and hosts everything from cocktail glasses to fine wine. “I will have my own line of furniture and unique home accessories” states Joelsson when asked about what’s on the radar for the next 12 years of SoJo Design – which also includes cultivating the concept of SoJo Turnkey and many more satellite offices in other cities. Flipping onto a blank white page, SoJo Design embarks on a new chapter with its celebratory 12th year anniversary. The next 12 years to come has a fresh slate that’s ready to be daubed with new concepts, designs and inspiration. Nothing signifies new beginnings and a promising future like the color white does, according to Joelsson: “anything is possible with white.”

THE WOMAN BEHIND THE BRAND
For someone as innately driven and self-created as Sofia Joelsson, slipping into the shoes of a woman who is now unveiling a new personal brand as editorin-chief of a magazine and rebranding her existing design company is a welcome challenge. Take a sneak peak at what her future has in store when interviewed for the launch of Curated Living.

When did you know you wanted to be a designer? I think I knew I wanted to be a designer my entire life. Growing up in Sweden, I was greatly inspired by the seasons. I feel like I’ve been taking that with me on my travels around the world and then finally landing here in Miami. Everything that I see around me basically inspires me for design. Did you have a mentor when you started out in interior design? I wouldn’t say that I had a specific mentor in design, however, there are many people in the design industry, from fashion to textile designers that have inspired me throughout the years. Tell us about your first major design project? I remember that project like it was yesterday. It was actually a penthouse on Ocean Drive, Miami Beach. It was a completely raw space with so much potential, so I found a client to buy it. I designed it and now I’m actually redoing it for them 12 years later.... it’s such an amazing, soulful place. Who in the design world inspires you right now? There are many people right now in the design world who inspire me. Two in particular that have come such a long way from where they started are Kelly Wearstler and India Hicks. They really inspire me in terms of where they started and to what lengths they took their companies. They have branched out not only in the design world but also in fashion, accessories and jewelry. In essence... design is endless. What was your most challenging design project? One of the most challenging design projects, so far, was when a client asked me to design his private jet. This was something that I had 56
never done before, but I found it very interesting and challenging...I’m on my seventh jet now. The thing you have to consider while designing a jet is you’re extremely limited to the space that you have to work with. Also, everything has to be fire protected, all the materials have to be natural, as well as secure and fastened for safety. I found all these challenges to be super exciting. Whether the design is for your home, a plane, or maybe a yacht, it’s still your home....your “home, anywhereTM”. What kind of suggestions would you have for a young person that is considering becoming an interior designer? I would say to keep in mind that there are so many influences out there. I trust that you have an instinct in regards to design, just as a fashion designer must have in fashion. Trust your instinct and follow it. Do you have a dream project or a client? My dream client or project is basically every single project and client that I meet, because you never know where the journey is going to take you. Seeing the clients vision through your own eyes and having the ability to mold it is something so special and unique. At the moment, what are your favorite materials to work with? Natural materials... A natural linen, a cotton, a raw silk...materials that have character. Materials that show the different nuances in the textures, the slight colorations and differences. I would say, when they are imperfectly “perfect”. When in need of inspiration, where do you go or what do you do? When I feel a little blocked in terms of creativity, I love to go out to the beach and just take in what nature has to give us. Take a walk. I have two dogs and I play with them, and before you know it, I’m full of inspiration again.
“Whenever I feel a little blocked, I love to go out to the beach and just take in what nature has to give us
57
58
“...design is
endless. ..”
59
If you were not an interior designer, what kind of career do you think you would have? If I was not an interior designer, I would definitely need to be doing something creative. I suppose being an editor of a magazine... (You can clearly see where this is going!) Perhaps even party planning. Some of my clients, after the project is done, have actually asked me to help them create a welcoming party. Entertaining plays a major role in my overall design. I like to infuse “joy” into the creation of a space. I would like to think that I am open to reinventing myself, organically, as my vision expands. You travel quite a lot, both personally and professionally. Is there a location that you have visited recently that has really inspired you? One of my favorite places in the world is Mykonos, Greece, which is featured in this issue’s Travel section. I hope you’ll enjoy exploring all the reasons why I find it so enchanting. With this being the white issue, I can’t think of a better place to pay tribute.

INSPIRED DESIGN
PHILIPPE S+ARCK MASTERING THE ART OF WHITE SPACE IN DESIGN
Philippe Starck is the clear choice for the Inspired Design feature in the premiere issue, as he is the undisputed master of white space. Inventor, creator, architect, designer, artistic director... Philippe Starck is all of the above, but above all he is a man of honesty, in the purest tradition of the Renaissance artists.
Through his “democratic design” concept, Starck campaigns for well-designed, quality objects that are not just reserved for an elite. He thoroughly believes in the intelligence of usefulness and subsequently, the usefulness of intelligence. This commitment to inspired design has led from one iconic creation to another, making Starck one of the most prolific designers of our time. His creativity knows no bounds and his projects range from everyday products such as furniture and lemon squeezers, to
78
revolutionary mega-yachts, micro wind turbines, electric cars, and hotels that aspire to be wondrous, stimulating and intensely vibrant places. Starck never ceases to push the boundaries and criteria of contemporary design. His technological miracles are vectors of democratic ecology, focused on action and a respect for the future of both humans and nature. Predicting the phenomena of convergence and dematerialisation, Philippe Starck has always devised objects that demand the most from the least.
“Every object, every shape, every style must have a meaning, and it is this meaning that influences us every day.” While Starck remains world renowned for his wondrous, one of a kind creations, his democratic design philosophy is ever present in his wide range of products and designs. As a pioneer whose spontaneity addresses everybody, Starck has never let his success obstruct his benevolence. With this in mind, he re-thinks the most
PHO TO JE AN BAP TI ST E M ON DI NO
Starck is the creative vision behind thousands of projects all over the world. His unparalleled inventiveness has catapulted him to global fame, but most importantly, he holds himself and challenges us all to aspire to his creative vision: creation, whatever shape it takes must make life better for the largest number of people possible. He believes this subversive, rebellious duty must be borne by all and assumes the mantle with the humor that has always accompanied his approach: “No one is forced to be a genius, but everyone has to take part.”
ordinary objects from our daily lives and the most astonishing things emerge, always to the point of drastic reinvention. He rebels against acquired laziness in order to serve us as well as possible while delivering his messages of humanity, love and poetry. His designs focus more on functionality than the object itself, aiming to provide the best possible service using a minimum of material. From this economy comes the elegance of a minimal line – almost a philosophy – and spreading curves that lean towards the disappearance of objects. This was the genesis of his iconic plastic furniture, the pinnacle of which is undoubtedly the iconic Louis Ghost Chair of which over a million pieces have been sold. Starck’s creative genius knows no bounds, which is nowhere more evident than in any of his designs of dozens of luxury boutique hotel properties across the globe. Upon entering, one can’t help but experience child like awe as wall to wall imagination, surprises and fabulous fantasies unfold before the eyes. His design tends to follow the same creative process as a filmmaker, lifting us out of the monotony of everyday life and thrusting us into the realm of imagination and creativity. Starck possesses the unique ability to tune into our dreams and needs. In some cases, even before we are aware of them ourselves. His
redesign of the Delano Hotel on Miami’s South Beach became the iconic definition of a chic Sobe hotel. The gorgeous white on white rooms are surpassed only by the quirks and hidden details in the public spaces. From the Alice in Wonderland feel of the blue door in the enormous front hedge to the whimsical lawn furniture arranged in the courtyardand even in the pool- Starck masterfully draws us into his world of creative spontaneity. The floor to ceiling, ethereal white curtains are reminiscent for the designer of time spent beneath his Aunt’s dining table, tablecloth swirling around him, as he would draw and daydream. Oversized to inspire awe and childlike wonder, the magnificent pieces throughout the lobby are each one of a kind. Starck says he wanted the lobby to feel like a home....perhaps a home for giants. His return to South Beach for the design of the SLS Hotel spawned the genesis of another wildly successful project. Guests are greeted by an expansive terrace with black and white Moroccan tiles, complete with the eclectic furniture for which Starck’s designs are well known. The rooms give a nod to Rococo French aristocracy in hues of white and pinks with oversized white sofas, white wooden tile flooring and bathrooms with glass enclosed rain showers encompassed in a shell of white walls and floors. These are just examples of a couple of our 79

favorites, but a stay in any Starck designed hotel is sure to be an experience not soon forgotten. The YOO project, which began in London in 2001 with property tycoon John Hitchcox and continued until 2008 in Santa Fe, Mexico – before its inevitable expansion – is part of Starck’s desire to break down the conventions of luxury lodging by offering apartments with modern floor plans that correspond with the expectations of tribe members. cultural families that advocates freedom, flexibility and simplicity, is the perfect outcome of a life of research and vision. In 2009 YOO had 50 buildings in constructions across the world. After three decades of design, Starck boldly looks to the future more than ever before with a destiny to bring mankind closer together through his continued
commitment to create. He is resolved to build happy tomorrows, inspired by his unsinkable passion for his neighbor and a sense of community and of course his unshakable love of design. Philippe Starck has shown us, by humbly setting an example, that we all have a responsibility to merit our existence and honor the link that unites us by showing inventiveness, courage, intelligence and responsibility.

EC
Where do you find inspiration?
My inspiration comes from various sources, but primarily from the unique environmental qualities of each project’s site as well as my continuing interest in the exploration of materials. RG
EC
Which architect has made the most lasting impression on you?
It is impossible to name one source, but I am primarily drawn to the work of architects who think about space in new ways as well as those who explore tactile qualities in their work. RG
EC
How does white influence your work?
White influences my work in the scientific sense: as the emission of all wavelengths of visible light. The role of light and the ways it can be shaped, reflected, refracted and filtered, are key in my design process and have shaped every project our office has done. RG
EC
What is an example of great white architecture?
Again, equating white with light, an example that immediately comes to mind is Richard Meier’s Jubliee Church in Rome. RG
EC
How does your background impact your work?
I’m Cuban-American, but grew up in South Florida and am very connected to the environmental qualities of the surrounding landscape. The quality of light here as well as the indigenous vegetation and ocean constantly influence and inspire me. RG
EC
What building or project are you most proud of?
RG
I can’t really single out one. Each is special for its own reasons.
EC
What is your dream project?
Dream projects come from dream clients. It is always a pleasure to connect with a client and create a special project that resonates. Overall, I would like to continue exploring various design typologies, which so far have included everything from commercial projects, to museum spaces, custom residences and product design. RG
EC
What is your favorite furniture designer / company’s? Why?
I do not have a single favorite, but appreciate the work of a number of designers. I am most drawn to pieces that explore materials and form in unexpected ways. RG

KAINDL Glass Art Celebration Series Chandelier Price: starting at $110,000
At once dynamic and serene, the cool clean symmetry of Robert’s Art Glass sets the tone for both residential and commercial interiors. Keenly aware of his environment, he understands the critical nature of both positive and negative space,”Music is the space between the notes...the White Space.” Light, form and color are the base notes for interior design. With each selection you begin to build a rhythm a pacing, the White Space is essential to the harmonic balance of any interior. It is the framework that punctuates each beautifully selected sculpture, rug, and vista. Without “White space” you have visual chaos. ART CONSCIOUS
Loris Cecchini In the work of Loris Cecchini, photography, drawing, sculpture and installation combine to form cohesive poetics, the cardinal element of which is transfiguration. In both his photographs and his sculptures, the revision of a wide-ranging notion of the ‘model’ involves the reworking of familiar forms from our everyday lives, which are transferred into an altered vision that challenges the viewer’s perceptions. Using subtle digital processing methods, the artist superimposes snatches of reality onto physical/virtual scenarios constructed by means of studio models, creating various situations that lie somewhere between the plausible and the paradoxical.

Elizabeth Turk Elizabeth Turk is a sculptor who transforms her signature medium of marble into strikingly intricate, seemingly weightless objects that defy expectations of a traditionally monumental, heavy, and prone-tofracture material. Her matrix-like marble sculptures look like physical impossibilities. Their thin, intertwining strips of carved ribbon are so smooth and fragile that it’s hard to imagine they could have been crafted by hand. But that is precisely how Ms. Turk works. The Southern California sculptor spends weeks and months drilling away at chunks of recycled stone until her twisted, milky creations emerge. Turk is pushing the physical limits of her material and reviving a classical medium for contemporary artistic exploration.

J. Mendel Spring 2014
T
o most women, J. Mendel has always been all about eveningwear (and of course, luxuriant, amazing, high-end furs). But as it goes for any good woman, there comes a time to exit your comfort zone and take on new and uncharted territory. Spring 2014 is J. Mendel’s moment to transition. Forget nighttime glamour – well, don’t forget it entirely, but this season is all about daytime decadence! While the runway revealed plenty of gorgeously applied gowns (think graphic laser-cut lace, embroidered red inserts, and noir leaf-embroidered tulle), the emphasis turned to a great array of upbeat mini-dresses in shift and fit-and-flair silhouettes. And Mendel did not stop there: he went for full-on youthful glamour, arriving in the form of sassy short-shorts and T-shirts expertly collaged with mixed lace, jacquard and silk crepe. But don’t throw your shorts and tees on with kicks; from mesh booties to impossibly chic stilettos, there’s plenty of hyper-feminine footwear to choose from. A pony-hair, laser-cut vest looked light as air as it floated down the runway; actually, the entire collection is like a breath of fresh, dreamy oxygen. One of my favorites consists of splendid spring fur (a major Spring ’14 trend), white-striped shadow fox, to be more specific, and a graphic lace vest for the freshest burst of white I’ve seen in some time. All I can say is, jaw-dropping gorgeousness. And don’t think this lady of the day is going anywhere without a clutch! One very special clutch, actually. There are moonlight minaudières to spare, but it’s all about the Melodie, in every incarnation from perforated black and white to tri-colored to popped with yellow. The message is clear: Melodie is the arm candy of the season.

Guide to Wearing White All Year Long
A
t Black Lapel we ‘d like strike this restriction from the rule books. Not only is it okay to wear white well past Labor Day, we believe it’s your inalienable right to wear white whenever you damn well please. Here’s how to rock the whites throughout the year. First, some general dos and don’ts when it comes to wearing white in the non-summer months: Do wear whites with any color you please. Yes, it’s true white “goes with everything but…” Don’t wear white with black if your face and hair are close in color. A harsh contrast below your face can be overpowering when there’s not much color contrast above your neck. Do put white at the core of your outfit (on a shirt/sweater/jacket or on pants) but… Don’t take it too far and wear white on top and bottom. That’s a look that screams “summer.” Do be sure to keep your white clean but… Don’t stress over it. Your whites aren’t going to stay pristine so don’t be prissy.
108
FASHION 1. Go off (with off-white desert boots) When the crisp air comes back and the leaves begin to change color it’s easy to head straight for the rich browns and deep grays that fit so well into this season’s looks. Yet whites can provide some relief for these heavier hues. Take the desert boots in the outfit below. Their sturdy soles and rugged texture blends nicely with the rougher fabrics of fall (denim, tweed and flannel) and lightens up your overall look. Combine this with a white shirt that’s crisper than an October breeze and you’ve got an instant autumn classic.
2. Layer it on thick (with a chunky cream sweater) When the temps drop, reach for a warm and chunky sweater in a cream color. A cream colored sweater, which you would be too warm to wear in the summer, flies right in the face of the no white after Labor Day rule. That’s one of many reasons why we love them. Here’s another: While others trudge through cooler weather in dark colors, you can stand out in a cream colored sweater. Wondering how to wear it? You really can’t go wrong. It goes with just about everything. Dress it down with jeans and sneakers. Or dress it up (as we did below) with a white twill shirt and knit tie underneath and it stands in nicely for a blazer. Got colors in your closet? Bring ‘em on. More subdued? Then rock it the way we have below with neutral gray slacks and your favorite brown dress shoes and this getup will take you from Casual Friday to Happy Hour in style.
3. Mix it up (with a summer outfit and a fall/spring scarf) The scarf moves this outfit from an al fresco evening summer dinner getup to a casual daytime look in cooler weather. Still, the jeans steal the show. When we think of denim’s roots in gold panning and cattle rustling, this dirty work makes the concept of crisp white jeans seem like an oxymoron. But today’s denim isn’t for manual labor. Today it’s street wear. So why limit your palette to the hard-working blues. Give your dark wash denim a rest and change things up by mixing in a pair of whites. Pair them with some Chuck Taylors (which never go out of season or out of style), an open-collared, button-front shirt in a not-so-dressy plaid for a classy-casual look that can take you anywhere. 109

esiding within the cyclades complex is a treasure called Mykonos-- a small slice of natural beauty that is located east of Athens in the middle of the Aegean. Barely covering 90 square kilometers, Mykonos has become a swanky destination for globetrotters due to its stark Cycladic architecture, pristine sandy beaches and cosmopolitan flair. A bright blue sky casts over the city as bronzed bodies saunter around in floor length caftans that sweep along the quant cobblestone alleys which lead to a number of hidden boutiques full of hand crafted pieces as well as exquisite restaurants with authentic grecian meals can be found along the way. Once the Mediterranean sun goes down, an array of night light options illuminate the city which truly confirms the “Party Island title that Mykonos owns in the Cycladic cluster. 113

WE RECOMMEND
“One of my favorite places in the entire world is Mykonos. I love the architecture, the seamless way the structures flow together...all white and unobstructed. Then, with the pops of color, it just brings everything out. My favorite color is white and Mykonos kind of brings that out in me. It really inspires me to see the endless possibilities when you have a blank canvas of white.” - Sofia Joelsson

CONCIERGE
WardrobeVAULT The ultimate in luxury services for the most discerning world traveler
If you hate packing for your vacation, lifestyle concierge services will do it for you. Fashionistas and business travelers with jetset itineraries and no time -- or inclination-- to pack are being offered a variety of concierge services that will pack their suitcases for them. It’s perhaps the least liked part of going on vacation: choosing outfits, packing, and unpacking. But a slew of lifestyle concierge services are available to help globetrotters shave off the time and hassle of emptying and refilling their closets, spots trade publication Travel Trade Gazette. In the US, Garde Robe -- which counts Ivanka Trump, David Bowie and Iman as members -- offers what it calls a ‘luggage-
GARDE ROBE
free valet’ service that will store, pack, and hand-deliver or courier suitcases to clients at the airport, hotel room or other destination. Items left with Garde Robe in their “climate-controlled, airpurified loft” are photographed and catalogued in a Cyber Closet allowing clients to select the items they want delivered. The service is pitched for multiple homeowners and those who may ski in Aspen one year, and Switzerland the next, says the company. In the UK, stylists at Wardrobe Mistress will edit their clients’ wardrobes to pick the best outfits for their travel needs and pack each item professionally in tissue paper to make sure that clothes arrive crease-free.
WARDROBE MISTRESS
London-based Vault Couture will likewise digitally archive the entire contents of a client’s closet so that instead of having to go through a mental list of their wardrobe, members can view their clothes online and create outfits destined for their upcoming beach holiday, or weekend city break. The company will then collect the outfits, pack them professionally and send them to any global destination. Luxury concierge service The Bidwell Group in New Jersey offers similar services that will store off-season clothing, footwear and accessories in “museumquality” preservation conditions, pack, and ship luggage around the world.
