I LETTER

e d i t o r’s

t is 3.30 in the morning and my alarm clock has just stolen away a lovely dream. I want to go back to sleep but I must get up and head to the airport. So, why lose sleep for the sake of travel? Because I was curious to know, see and experience the aura of the lost city of Petra. It has long been said that travel ‘broadens the mind’. And ‘Curiosity’ is the little Christopher Columbus in all of us, sailing beyond the horizon for reasons of our own. At ‘Curiosity’ we believe life without travel is like a canvas without colour. For us travel is an art through which our restlessness finds expression. But pleasure is not the only reason that makes one leave the comfort zone. Whatever impels us to travel be it the oracle, the pilgrimage, business, adventure, wellness, health or the lust to explore the unfamiliar; it should never be routine. This charming magazine has been conceived to capture all aspects of the travel business be it related to destinations, hospitality, airlines, cruise lines, tour operators or any other sectors associated with these. It is mainly targeted at industry professionals who are eager to know and share the latest news from the world of travel. So get ready to embark on an unforgettable journey with us as we set out to explore the extraordinary.

Cruise Tourism in Dubai To Prosper Due to Easy Multi-Entry Access - New UAE multiple-entry visa system makes multi-stop trips easier and cheaper for travellers - Amends to visa system will also boost Medical Tourism

impact on the attractiveness of Dubai as a destination for those overseas visitors who plan on travelling in and out of the UAE – for example on a cruise ship, or by taking a short break into neighbouring Oman and Saudi Arabia.

Recent regulatory changes to the United Arab Emirates’ visa system will have a transformative effect on Dubai’s cruise sector and further boost medical tourism in the emirate. A new ruling in the UAE (Cabinet Resolution No. 22 of 2014) which took effect on 1 August 2014, will ensure implementation of a new visa and fees system. Amendments include a new multiple entry tourism permit for cruise passengers and a range of new entry permits for medical tourists and their companions. The ruling was signed by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice-President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai.

“The announcement will have a significant impact on cruise tourism in the Arabian Gulf, and is one which has been received very well by our partners within the cruise industry. With Dubai being the only home port for many international cruise lines operating cruises in this region, the advantage of simplifying visa procedures through granting passengers multiple entry tourist permits will reduce the costs for each passenger and further boost the sector’s growth. This means that visitors can now arrive at Dubai International Airport or Dubai World Central, take a cruise from Mina Rashid out to other emirates and neighbouring countries and return to Dubai on the same visa rather than having to incur additional time and expense obtaining two or three separate visas.

These visa options will make travel between UAE and visiting nearby countries easier for travellers who need to make multiple stops whether by air, land or sea. The new multiple entry tourism permit for cruise passengers at just 200 dirhams (c. US$50) will now make their travel more cost effective and logistically more convenient with particular impact on a number of key markets for which previous regulations made the cost significantly higher, including India, China, Russia & CIS, South Africa, and Brazil.

“We are delighted that the tourists taking a Gulf Cruise can now enter all UAE ports in their itinerary using just one multiple entry visa. Dubai Cruise Tourism has been working closely with Abu Dhabi Tourism & Culture Authority as well as Oman’s Ministry of Tourism through the Cruise Arabia initiative formed late last year. As partners, by working together we can promote the Arabian Gulf more effectively as a leading cruise destination. The new UAE multi-entry visa is a much welcomed benefit to growing this important tourism segment.

Hamad bin Mejren Executive Director of Business Tourism at Dubai’s Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) said: “This positive announcement of the new visa system will have an encouraging

“Through our network of Dubai Tourism offices across the world we will use the ruling to further promote Dubai’s attractiveness as a destination for both leisure and business.”

Westin Introduces New Global Partnerships and Well-Being Council Member to Help Travellers ‘Eat Well’ on the Road

More than Half of Travellers Crave Healthy Food Options while travelling and 41% are Afraid of Putting on the Pounds, Inspiring Starwood’s Wellness Brand to Partner with SuperChefs and The Juicery Renowned Dietician Ashley Koff Joins Westin Well-Being Council Westin Hotels & Resorts has unveiled the next stage of its year-long Westin Well-Being Movement with the announcement of two new nutrition-focused partnerships with SuperChefs™ and The Juicery and the newest member of the brand’s Well-Being Council, dietician Ashley Koff RD. As an advocate for wellness and healthy eating, Westin teamed up with Super Chefs, a group of doctors, dentists, dieticians, chefs and other experts dedicated to educating kids on the importance and the fun of eating smart, to create The Westin Eat Well Menu for Kids. The extensive new menu, which has rolled out to properties worldwide, includes eight signature dishes created and tested by kids, receiving a stamp of approval from notoriously finicky eaters. A new, dedicated fresh juice and smoothie offering, Westin Fresh by The Juicery, is currently rolling out to hotels worldwide. The program was created with leaders in nutrition, featuring juices and smoothies designed for business and leisure travellers seeking healthy options while travelling. “As we continue to roll-out innovative wellness options for our guests as part of the Westin Well-Being Movement, we saw this as a perfect opportunity to introduce two new programs that are carefully customized to help guests continue their healthy eating habits while travelling,” said Brian Povinelli, Global Brand Leader for Westin 22 Curiosity Sept - Oct 2014

& Le Méridien Hotels. “Both SuperChefs and The Juicery have made great strides in making it easier to help maintain a healthier life while promoting the importance of good nutrition.” Kid-Tested Menus Puts the Fun into Healthy Eating Westin’s partnership with SuperChefs demonstrates the brand’s dedication to the well-being of its guests – big and small – by now offering a menu fully dedicated to healthy options for kids at its hotels around the world. The Westin Eat Well Menu for Kids engages children through a colorful, playful menu placemat filled with inventive dishes like Build Your Own Fruit Crepes that allow kids to actually play with their food, providing a sense of discovery while imparting the value of healthy eating. The new kids’ menu features a vibrant array of healthful, tasty dishes such as Build Your Own Salmon Niçoise Salad that were created and tested by SuperChefs kids. Each menu placemat is complete with games like “word scrambles” for kids to solve while enjoying their Baby Spinach & Cheese Omelette and educational tidbits on what makes certain foods “super.” In partnership with SuperChefs Creator and Founder Dr. Greg Chang, SuperChefs Advisory Board member and Yale Wellness Manager Lisa Kimmel, and their staff of professional chefs and educators, the new menus were developed to help teach the essentials of balanced nutrition and food preparation.

More Than 50% of Parents Concerned about Healthy Food Options on the Road Increasingly, guests are concerned not only for their own well-being but that of their children as well. According to the brand’s well-being survey conducted earlier this year, when it comes to food options while traveling, more than half of respondents are most concerned about the limited access to healthy food options and 41% of parents are concerned about gaining weight while on the road due to the limited healthy food options. And how do parents get their little ones to eat their veggies? One third of those surveyed bribe their children by giving them access to TV or smartphones and 30% offer a special sweet treat in exchange for eating a healthy meal. The Westin Eat Well Menu for Kids was designed to combat the challenges parents face, arming them with a seamless way to provide kids with a wholesome, delicious meal. Westin Gets Fresh with The Juicery Westin and The Juicery worked with a leading nutritionist to develop an assortment of energizing juices and smoothies designed to enhance well-being and provide fuel for the day. Did you know that 95% of the vitamins and enzymes our bodies need are found in the juice from raw fruits and vegetables? Westin Fresh by The Juicery juices and smoothies are designed to nourish the body and mind with nutrition rich ingredients including beetroot, açai, kale, pomegranate, mint, spinach and blueberries.

The new menu will be featured at all Westin hotels worldwide by early 2015. The Business of Eating Well In addition to the new partnerships and programming with SuperChefs and The Juicery, Westin has also appointed its next expert to the Westin Well-Being Council. Leading the charge of providing insightful and informational content surrounding the brand’s “Eat Well” pillar is Ashley Koff, RD. An internationallyrenowned dietician, Koff is dedicated to imparting the value of quality nutrition choices in achieving optimal health. The Westin Well-being Council is a diverse advisory board composed of renowned thought leaders, each of whom aligns with a specific wellness brand pillar. Ashley joins Council members Andy Puddicombe, Headspace Co-Founder and mediation expert, and media mogul Arianna Huffington in guiding and inspiring new initiatives, leveraging proprietary research to inform and introduce new programs throughout the year. “Westin is the first global hotel brand I have encountered that takes such a thorough approach to the well-being of its guests,” said

Ashley Koff RD. “I look forward to contributing my experience and knowledge to the Westin Well-being Movement to further inspire others to pursue and enjoy a balanced, healthy life.” With a brand positioning rooted in wellness for more than a decade, Westin Hotels & Resorts is dedicated to ensuring that guests leave feeling better than when they arrived. Earlier this year the brand launched The Westin WellBeing Movement – a year-long global initiative designed to enhance the well-being of guests and associates with the introduction of a string of innovative partnerships and programs across the brand’s six pillars of well-being: Feel Well, Work Well, Move Well, Eat Well, Sleep Well and Play Well. Building upon its existing healthy SuperFoodsRx™ menus, Westin recently introduced new delicious and nutrient-rich offerings including Westin Fresh by The Juicery, featuring energizing juices and smoothies, and kid-tested nourishing dishes developed in partnership with SuperChefs on the Westin Eat Well Menu for Kids (Eat Well). The brand also recently announced a partnership with the mindful meditation app, Headspace (Feel Well), in which guests have exclusive access to customized content through the Westin website, designed to spread healthy benefits

including decreasing stress, improving mood and increasing creativity. The inspiration for Westin’s wellness strategy, the iconic Heavenly® Bed (Sleep Well) is beloved by guests and lauded as one of hospitality’s great innovations. WestinWORKOUT®, RunWESTIN™ and Westin Gear Lending with New Balance® (Move Well) together pack a formidable punch, offering guests a holistic fitness solution. The brand’s nature-inspired design, signature sensory welcome, Heavenly Bath and Heavenly Spa (Feel Well) offer a relaxing respite from the rigors of travel. Tangent (Work Well), an innovative workspace concept for small groups modeled to support today’s mobile traveler, is receiving rave reviews and high usage from guests in locations where available. Westin Weekend (Play Well) signature experiences are designed to let guests escape, discover and relax and the brand’s digital destination guide, Westin Finds from AFAR, provides guests with uniquely curated travel experiences. These offer lighter, mezze-style small plates and a comprehensive drinks menu of awardwinning international wines, fresh juices and cutting edge cocktails, devised and prepared by in-house mixologists. A vast open-air terrace stretches the entire length of the building. Fringed with greenery, it is the ideal spot for relaxing on day beds with mezze and shisha and to enjoy sweeping views of the Burj Khalifa. The combined dining, lounge and bar areas cater to over 300 people, seated, or in excess of 1,000 in pure standing capacity. The vast al fresco terrace area extends this capacity further in the cooler months. “This is my home, my new destination and my dream to finally cook in the Middle East. P

oland is surprisingly big with plenty to explore. Lying at the crossroads between East and West, it is a modern, rapidly developing European nation that has been successful in retaining the magic of a bygone era. Rich history and culture, rolling plains, pristine beaches, emerald lakes, wild mountains, endless forests with rich flora and fauna, cascading waterfalls, beautiful national parks that are home to lynx, wolves and golden eagles, medieval towns, baroque castles, vibrant cities, delicious local cuisine and friendly people make it an ideal holiday destination. So where does one start? Warsaw and Krakow are two of its biggest cities and a must see. While Krakow has the looks, the brains and the vanity that comes with it, Warsaw has the dynamism, the commitment and the scars to prove it. Wroclaw, Poznan and Lodz are happening cities and each has its own devotees. Here’s an overview of the best places to visit in Poland. 44 Curiosity Sept - Oct 2014

WARSAW

KRAKOW (CRACOW)

Warsaw is a big world with an east European flavour. There’s something to satisfy every desire in the capital of Poland. Krakow may have the beauty and Gdansk the seashore, but Warsaw has the culture, energy and the action. And that is visible everywhere, from history in the Old Town and post-war architectural gems of Mokotow and Zoliborz to the flourishing arts scene of Praga and 82 city parks. There are a total of 18 districts in Warsaw.

The former capital is an undisputed architectural gem of central Europe. This city of magic and legends is home to many beautiful monuments including Renaissance citadel, Baroque churches and Art Nouveau theatre. Its cobbled streets are lined with pavement cafes, candlelit bars, clopping horses and accordionists.

It was once known as the ‘Paris of the North’ because of its fine architecture and culture. The ‘Phoenix City’ was another name given to it because of the manner in which its citizens have constantly rebuilt this city from the rubble and ashes of numerous wars and occupations. The Palace of Science and Culture, presented to the city by Stalin is one of its most distinctive buildings. Warsaw has many other lovely churches and monasteries and interesting monuments and museums, and it bustles with activity during summer—with theatre, book, Jazz, and classical music festivals.

BIESZCZADY MOUNTAINS Part of the Carpathian Mountain Range, the Bieszczady Mountains is a paradise for romantics and is steeped in history and natural splendor. Situated near the borders of Slovakia and Ukraine, it is a haven for both peace and adventure lovers and is most beautiful during summer and autumn. Its soft green mountains are peppered with traditional wooden churches and offer numerous biking and hiking trails. Bieszczady National Park has been declared a UNESCO biosphere reserve and his home to extraordinary wildlife. Sept - Oct 2014 Curiosity 45

CZESTOCHOWA The city of Czestochowa lies in the heart of Krakowsko-Czestochowska Upland, the region characterised by picturesque Jurassic rocks. Czestochowa is usually associated with Jasna Gora Monastery which is the biggest Marian sanctuary in the country. For the majority of Poles it is an important pilgrimage destination. The icon known as Black Madonna of Czestochowa crowned in 1656 as the Queen and Protector of Poland is credited with many miracles.

GDANSK (DANZIG) Gdańsk is a thousand-year old port city with a dramatic history of war and insurrection, and contrasting periods of trade and prosperity. Situated by the sea on the Baltic coast, it has a gentle climate and beautiful beaches. The exclusive architecture of the Old Town, including the largest brick Gothic church in the world is undoubtedly worth exploring.

MALBORK (MARIENBURG) The small town of Malbork some 60km south of Gdańsk on the main railway line between Warsaw and the coast offers visitors not only the world’s biggest brick castle, but a number of other sights and sensations. A delightful mix of medieval architecture and fascinating churches and monuments, Malbork is more than the sum of its UNESCO-listed fort. A trace of their presence in the town is the imposing red brick castle from 1274 on the river bank, which is the largest Gothic fortress in Europe. 46 Curiosity Sept - Oct 2014

LUBLIN

MASURIAN LAKES

Lublin, located east of the Vistula, is an ancient city with a market place that may have dated back to the sixth century. Because it is located on Poland’s eastern border, it became, early on, a line of defense against various invaders that destroyed the city over the centuries. It also was home to one of the largest Jewish communities in Poland. Evidence of Lublin connecting Western and Eastern cultures can be found at the Holy Trinity Chapel that blends Catholic and Russian-Byzantine styles. Alongside cobblestone streets and medieval architecture of the Old Town, it boasts a lively arts and nightclub scene.

Located in northeastern part of Poland, the Masurian Lake District is also often called ‘A land of a thousand lakes’. In fact, 10,000 years ago, the glacier shaped more than three thousand of them, making this region a unique place. It offers a broad variety of touristic activities. Stretching from the town of Węgorzewo in the north of the region, through Giżycko and Mikołajki, to Ruciane Nida in the south, it is an excellent base for canoeing, windsurfing and sailing. Large primeval forests – Puszcza Piska and Puszcza Borecka - surrounding the district, add to the attractions of the region. Biking and horse riding are just some of the ways to explore it.

Oswiecim is a quiet city in Southern Poland, roughly 60 km from Krakow. The town is best known as being home to Auschwitz I, a World War II concentration camp, and its close proximity to Auschwitz-Birkenau, an extermination and forced labor camp. The first record of the town dates to the 10th century. Originally, Germans and Poles inhabited the town. Though visiting the State Museum Auschwitz – Birkenau is a grim experience, it’s an essential element in understanding the full evil of the Holocaust.

BIALOWIEZA FOREST The Bialowieza Forest is a large remnant of the primeval forests that once covered much of Europe. The forest straddles the border between Poland and the Republic of Belarus, and there are border crossings for tourists on foot or on bicycles. TORUN Torun, located on the Vistula River, is best known, perhaps, as the birthplace of Copernicus, but it’s just as well known for its old market place and Gothic town hall that the National Geographic Polska put on its list of the 30 most beautiful places in the world. As Torun escaped bombing during World War II, the city still boasts numerous buildings that date back to the Middle Ages. Construction on the town hall started in the 13th century, with many churches, including the Cathedral of SS. John the Evangelist and John the Baptist, dating back to the 14th century. This church is a must-see for travelers interested in Gothic paintings and sculptures, and Baroque altars.

LODZ Lodz, the former textile industry empire, today is a city of modern technologies, creative enterprises and grand events. It is a metropolis where a landscape of industrial architecture mixes with silhouettes of office buildings, production halls, culture and sports buildings. Lodz also offers a number of entertainment and recreation venues including plenty of pubs and clubs at famous Piotrkowska street. 50 Curiosity Sept - Oct 2014

TATRA MOUNTAINS Tatra Mountains boast the highest mountain range between the Alps and the Caucasus. Rocky peaks covered with snow all-year-round, sharp ridges, picturesque ponds, waterfalls and valleys make this place the most spectacular in Poland. Tatra Mountains seen from Podhale and lighted up by the morning sun actually constitutes the most beloved sight for Polish landscape photographers.

Here you’ll find more bridges than anywhere in Central Europe, a market square second only to Krakow & rsquo’s in size, an entire Cathedral Island of awe-inspiring architecture, and a one-ofa-kind UNESCO-recognised engineering marvel, not to mention a full calendar of festivals and events and 135,000 university students pushing the local nightlife to unhinged heights. Having successfully stewarded the Euro 2012 football championships and with an upcoming coronation as 2016’s ‘European Capital of Culture,’ more and more people are discovering that Wrocław is the most exciting destination in Poland.

Poznan has long been known as an academic center and home to Poland’s third largest university. itting in a plush suite on the 18th floor at the Park Regis Kris Kin Hotel Dubai, Simon Wan, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director as well as key shareholder of Sydney-based StayWell Hospitality Group, is a man who knows his business. The view from the room is that of Burj Khalifa. A fitting scenario for someone who portrays extraordinary business confidence as he talks about his expansion strategy! Simon explains, “When we enter a new market, the first thing we do is try to understand the culture, the people, the business practices… If we are not respectful of the cultures and societies where we operate, people will cease to trust us and our brands. Every consumer is local. They are driven by who they are, what they believe in and what the traditions of that society are. And that’s what we offer as a brand first ‘Local knowledge, international expertise’.” Simon splits his time between Sydney and the rest of world virtually living on plane for half the month. Yet the 57-year-old shows no sign of fatigue. He was born into privilege but chose to work hard for his living. And now with 30 years of experience working for leading international hospitality groups including Holiday Inn, Hyatt and Accor around the world, he has to his credit a long list of achievements. Over the years Simon has developed a reputation of turning small businesses into major operations and that’s exactly what he is looking to do with SWHG. During his illustrious career, he held many top positions including CEO of Accor for North Asia based in Beijing, overseeing a hotel portfolio of 68 hotels in the region followed by managing director of the Park Plaza Hotel Group for Asia Pacific. Before forming SWHG, Simon was the CEO and Managing Director of THL, an Australian ASX-listed hotel company with 530 hotels worldwide. In just four years (2002 - 2006) Simon succeeded in boosting the portfolio of the private company with gross assets of AUD $3 million to a publicly listed tourism company with gross assets in excess of AUD $390 million which employed 1,800 staff globally.

I wanted to be a glorified waiter. You see, 30 years ago hotel jobs were not seen as a career. So I spoke to mum who managed to convince dad on the condition that I would first complete my university education and that’s how I went to the Cornell University. On completing my education, I began working with large hotel groups as a junior executive. Those days, dad wouldn’t speak to me as it was too below his expectations. He only started speaking to me when I progressed to senior management positions. Over the years, what is the biggest change you have seen in your industry? Like every industry, technology has changed the way we do business today. Not so long ago we received bookings via telex, fax and travel agents. However, over the years, we have seen massive growth of internet that has led to the birth of free independent travelers who are savvy enough to go online to book hotels, airlines, cars – pretty much anything and everything. In more advanced countries such as the US, 50 per cent of hotel bookings come from online channels and the number is growing drastically. Today, you don’t need a room key to open your room door. Your mobile gives you access to the room, you can order room service through smart TV also operated through your mobile and many such wonderful developments that one could not have imagined few years back.

How did you enter hospitality? I was born in Hong Kong and was the only son in the family. When I finished school I began studying accountancy. I was doing Bachelor of Commerce and was struck by my cousin who always had the best looking girls. He dined in fancy restaurants, took them around, always paid the bill. And I realized he was able to do so because he worked for hotels and restaurants where he made a lot of money in tips. So I decided to take up a part time job with him working for room service where I too started to get a lot of tips. And I felt that’s what I wanted to do and therefore decided not to become an accountant or lawyer that my father wanted me to. When I told my dad that was going to join the hotel industry he was furious and said that in short

How did you form StayWell Hospitality Group? I wanted to retire eight years ago. So I wrapped up my business and booked a 9-week golf holiday in Hawaii with my wife and children. After the 5th week my wife got totally bored and I had to play alone or with strangers. Soon I began having dinner with strangers. During the 6th week my wife asked me to go and find a job as I was invading her privacy. When I was working she had to only cook dinner but now she had to cook breakfast, lunch and dinner. That’s how I approached one of my friends who had three Leisure Inn hotels in Tasmania and he invited me to join him. And so we formed the company where I bought 50% of the business as well as a high rise residential building in Sydney called Park Regis with a hotel component at the bottom 10 floors. The first day I went to work by myself, my briefcase and my laptop as I was the only one there and that’s how I started StayWell.

How do you distinguish yourself from other brands in the market? There are over 400 hotel brands in the world. Fashion designers, restaurant owners, furniture houses, have all floated their hotel brands leading to big range and diversity of hotels. So much so, that last night I heard on TV about Discovery Channel launching its own hospitality brand. Competition in our industry is therefore very stiff. However, we are quite unique. We are the largest independently owned hotel management group in Asia pacific with a global footprint operating up-scale Park Regis and mid-scale Leisure Inn brands. When we enter a new market we always join hands with a strong local partner and together we build the brand and business. One of our key USPs is ‘Local knowledge, international expertise’. In addition, we are very close to our customers, that really sets us apart. One of our company policies is that general managers must take personal responsibility to get back to customer reviews and feedback on any networks / channels be it TripAdvisor or any other within 48 hours. The Dubai gathering is an important part of the StayWell Hospitality Groups’ strategic growth, in having a platform to bring together all the key stakeholders who are working alongside us to bring the business vision to reality. Innovation and evolution were top of the agenda. Some other words we came up with during the conference were unity, tolerance and collaboration.

Why did you choose Dubai for your first annual conference in the Middle East? We selected Dubai as the destination of our global conference for a lot of strategic reasons. Geographically speaking, if you open the map you realize Dubai enjoys the most central location. In terms of infrastructure it has got the very best airline, the very best airport, the biggest mall, the tallest building, the finest products and services. What challenges do you face in this part of the world i.e. Middle East and Dubai? Everybody knows the political challenges in the Middle East that cause disruption and have an adverse impact on the economy. However, challenges mean opportunities too. Dubai spent a lot of time on becoming an international city and on building the confidence people have in it. Dubai has done a lot of hard work. Compared to other top international cities it is younger but has some unique features. Let’s put it this way Dubai is different. Everybody has seen Dubai change over the years. Its multicultural society makes it very international and I see it moving towards a leading city in the same league as some other great cities of the world such as London, New York or Singapore. It is a city with a vision that is paying off. Dubai International Airport has surpassed Heathrow as the world’s busiest global hub. It has the vision of increasing hotel rooms, building a second airport, expanding its airline network with the number of new aircraft Emirates is buying, creating more entertainment and tourism attractions such as the new theme parks as well as building brand awareness. All this is targeted at stimulating demand. It needs to ensure that it remains the number one destination in the Middle East. Increase in supply will force hoteliers and airlines to create demand. We will together market Dubai as the destination. It is one way of expanding Dubai. What made Qantas partner with Emirates? Qantas is Australia’s largest airline and the partnership between Emirates Airline and Qantas is a reflection of Dubai’s prominence as a leading destination and transit point. This alliance resulted in a switch of the stopover for Qantas longhaul flights to Dubai from Singapore helping to significantly boost passenger traffic at Dubai International Airport. The agreement also gave Emirates passengers access to 27 new routes and six new destinations in Australia, New Zealand and Asia leveraging Emirates market Share in Asia-Pacific. What are your plans for Dubai Expo 2020? Dubai Expo 2020 has got everybody excited about the future. The fact that Dubai won Expo 2020 is recognition by world economy that this country deserves the opportunity. It is a vote of confidence by the international business community in the future of Dubai. It is a sign of the maturity of the city that it can host major events. We are targeting 12 hotels by 2015 in the Middle East region and looking to double that portfolio by 2020. Is Dubai not saturated in terms of hotels and hospitality brands? Dubai is now ready for mid-market. It is ready to expand the budget segment that presents a great opportunity for StayWell Hospitality Group. Until now it had been focusing on upmarket tourists and luxury segment. However, not everyone can afford to pay 300 or 400 dollars a night. With low cost carriers bringing in budget travelers, we need to have a lot more midscale and economy hotels and that is what developers are now focusing on. We are facing some stiff competition as there are a lot of good hotel groups here but we are confident of getting a fair market share with our strong brands, excellent resources and level of service. We will grow with Dubai.

What is your current portfolio of brands? StayWell Hospitality Group operates two brands the up-scale Park Regis and mid-scale Leisure Inn. In addition, we are working on a trendy lifestyle brand as well as a luxury brand. What according to you is luxury? Luxury is a highly over-used word. Luxury does not have a standard definition. It is a very subjective word. Luxury means different things to different people. What can be overbearing for some can be comfortable for others. Therefore, we need to do a lot more research before we launch our luxury brand.

How many hotels do you have at the moment and what are your expansion plans for the region? At the moment we have got 34 hotels operational in Australia, Singapore, New Zealand, China, Indonesia, India, UK and the UAE. Talking about, development and growth in the Middle East, we are really focused on the region over the next 12 to 18 months owing to the scale of opportunity we see here and have therefore set up a special development department. We are in advanced negotiations for two new hotels in Dubai as well as one in Doha. In addition, we are in the process of formalizing a Joint Venture with UAE-based hotel company that will give us seven properties in the region including the Emirates, Iraq, Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan. We are also in talks for a JV in Saudi Arabia. If all goes well, by 2015 we are looking to add 12 hotels in the region – out of these five will be in the UAE. It will

give us approximately 3500 keys in the region and out of these 1500 would be in the UAE. Your target is to have 100 hotels by 2016? How do you plan to achieve it? We are looking at a number of strategic overseas portfolio acquisitions to reach the 100 hotel target. Our strategy is to build our portfolio through organic growth as well as partnerships. We believe it is achievable and if we work out all these partnerships it will keep me very busy. We recently entered into a joint venture with South Africa based Mantis Collection that will front the growth of our hotel brands throughout subSaharan Africa. Under the agreement, the Park Regis and Leisure Inn brands will be established in key cities at properties to be procured by Mantis. We are looking at similar partnerships in the Middle East, China and India that are the growth engines of the world. We expect to have 15 hotels in India, 20 in China, 10 in Indonesia, 10 in Europe, 15 in the Middle East as well as double our hotels in Australia.

Globally speaking what kind of investment are you looking at to sustain this development? As little as possible. Well, jokes apart… We would be investing about 20 to 30 million dollars from now until 2016. So far with our group of investors and shareholders, StayWell Hospitality Group has equity and / or ownership interests in 16 of our 34 hotels, committing a large amount of investment resources throughout our hotel network. What kind of return on investment do you expect? Depending on the various factors such as the city, location, product and supply the return on investment these days generally varies from 5 to 15 per cent. In order to have a good return we need to stimulate good demand. Speaking about your properties do you have any favourites? My favourite is anybody who gives me the best profit. No I am joking. I cannot have favourites. I am like the father of the family and, all hotels and people working there are equally dear to me. Therefore, I try to be as impartial as I can be to all – providing them the right support, the right tools and right encouragement so they can grow. I feel extremely proud and inspired when a young manager gets promoted or finds a better job with another hotel. How has Park Regis Kris Kin Hotel Dubai been performing since its opening? Park Regis Kris Kin Hotel Dubai began operations in December 2010. To start with 2011 was not as good as we wanted. We had to pay the school fees to establish our business here and build our network. And for that we had to understand the culture, the people and their expectations, the business practices in this part of the world. As a result today we are very confident. We did pretty good last year. In fact, 2013 exceeded our expectations. This year has been even better with record H1 results. We foresee some challenges in 2015 and 2016 with more hotels coming and therefore supply going up. But I am sure Dubai will rise up to the challenge by creating more demand. We have enjoyed great ranking for three years in a row on TripAdvisor and have had tremendous guest feedback. We host two airline crews Thai Airways and British Airways. It is a reflection of the quality of our product and services as well as the level of safety and security we offer. Over the last three years you have been pretty quiet in terms of development. Why is that? Soon after the opening of Park Regis Kris Kin Hotel, Dubai and the rest of the region, was hit by global financial crisis (GFC). Money retreated, bank funding dried up and many left the market. All new hotel projects almost froze. However, the market is now back on track with several new hotels under development that’s opened many new opportunities that we are eager to capitalize on. What’s your approach towards your owners / investors? As an owner and investor in the company myself I understand how important it is to have strong relationships with all stakeholders. We place a lot of emphasis in this area through open and regular communication and sharing of our successes and challenges. In each region our Heads of Regional Operation Managers meet with owners on a regular basis and I take a personal

commitment to build individual relationships with all owners and investors. How involved are owners / investors in management of hotels? At the end of the day the results that we deliver to investors and owners is how they measure our capabilities. My senior executive team is also very involved with investors and owners on a regular basis. Are owners / investors of the Middle East different? I don’t believe that the Middle East owners are any different from our other owners. Every owner wants to see a good return on his investment and our relationships with our owners and results are what makes the difference. As a seasoned hotelier with a flawless record of accomplishment, what advice would you give to up and coming hoteliers who wish to follow your example? What is your secret to success? My advice - be humble. Try to understand every aspect of hotel operation. Don’t try to be a manager immediately. In order to be a manager, you need to learn all aspects of operation – front office, house-keeping, F & B, finance, sales and marketing, human resources, etc. Best manager is someone who understands every aspect of the business. So grow in your position and you will gain respect from all your colleagues. Remember respect is earned, it is not something you can demand. Talking about secret to success I believe passion, commitment and hard-work are the three keys to success. You need to have passion for your job as well as everything you do in your personal / private life. Without passion you cannot have commitment. In order to succeed you really need to work hard. There are no short-cuts to success. Learn from your failures and never repeat the same mistakes. Apart from work, what else interests you? I try to spend time with my family having a nice lunch or dinner with my two daughters who are 17 and 18. Whenever I get a weekend off, I try to play golf. I like to watch movies such as action thrillers, drama and spy. I also follow business and current affairs documentaries.

PETRA The Lost City By Riham Ahmed Photographer: Firoze Edassery

61 Curiosity September 2014

Some places don’t have history – they are history. Petra is without doubt the most spectacular remains of antiquity. Curiosity Middle East on a tour of Jordan’s ‘rose-red city’ that still hides many untold secrets...

P

etra, the ancient Nabatean trading city carved into the rose-red rocks is one of the world’s best known and most magnetic tourist sites. No matter what you know of this Jordanian marvel - nothing quite prepares you for the experience of being there. With an aura of a lost city, it surprises with its secrets, natural beauty and archeological richness. Petra is half-built, half-carved into the rock, and is surrounded by mountains riddled with passages and gorges. It was beautifully captured by Steven Spielberg, who filmed the last scenes of ‘Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade’ there. Petra lies south of Amman, the Dead Sea and the Gulf of Aqaba, hidden away on the edge of the mountainous desert of Wadi Araba, surrounded by towering hills of sandstone which gave the city some natural protection against invaders. It is merely three hours drive from Amman and one hour from Aqaba.

The Nabataeans, a Semitic tribe recognized Petra’s strategic location for trade and lived in the valley from about the 6th century B.C. through the early years of the second century A.D. It was for centuries the meeting point of the main routes used by camel caravans transporting spices between the Mediterranean and the Near East, Africa and India and prospered until trade routes changed. When the kingdom was annexed by Emperor Trajan of Rome in A.D. 106, it became one of the empire’s most important trading centers. In the fourth century, it continued to be an important political outpost for the Byzantine empire, becoming the seat of a bishopric. But the city soon began to fall into decline. Petra sank into obscurity after a shift in trade routes that was followed by two powerful earthquakes, one in A.D. 363 and a second in 551. It was then that Petra’s importance slowly faded along with its vitality.

Few tourists venture beyond Petra’s main sites but there is plenty to look around

Over the centuries, Petra was known only to occasional plunderers and the Bedouins who remained in the area. It was altogether unknown to the rest of the world until 1812, when a Swiss explorer Burckhardt, masquerading as an Arab in Egypt, heard tales of an ancient city in the mountains 250 miles to the east and coaxed a guide to take him there. Petra is now a United Nations World Heritage Site. It is best seen just before dawn with the first rays of sun that slowly light up the fascinating façade of the 2,000-year-old treasury building – painting it rose red. The entrance to Petra, hidden deep inside a canyon, is through a famous cleft in the rocks, the Siq. Along the rock walls of the Siq there is a succession of inscriptions, niches and small votive altars, but also reliefs and sculptures that depict a caravan of men and camels. Once inside, the Siq narrows to little more than 5 metres in width, whereas the walls tower up hundreds of metres on either side. The floor, originally paved, is now largely covered with soft sand, although evidence of Nabataean

construction can still be seen in some places. Carved into the canyon wall in the first century B.C., the Treasury (Khazneh) stands 130 feet high and suggests Hellenistic and Middle Eastern influences with intricate figures and patterns between columns and inside pediments. The Treasury has no real interior space, just a large room with recessed areas on the side. North from the Khazneh lies the massif of Jebel Khubtha. Three large structures (Royal Tombs) are carved into the rock face, which is known as the King’s Wall. First is the Urn Tomb, a well- preserved monument that faces on to an open terrace fronted by a double row of vaults. The Corinthian Tomb, a smaller version of the Khazneh, is followed by the Palace Tomb (Silk Tomb), named from the extraordinary chromatic effect of the rock. Some distance away from the Royal Tombs, to the north, there is a tomb built for the Roman governor of the city under Hadrian, Sextius Florentinus. The ancient city revels in dramatic contrasts between shadow and intense light as Venetian

alleys open up into spaces where horses can canter past pedestrians. Interspersed through the rock formations that rise in the distance are remnants of tombs. There are also noteworthy relics from Roman times: at the southern edge of the valley stands the 1st century AD theatre, carved almost entirely in the rock, which could hold more than 8,000 spectators, while at the end of the Siq the ruins open out of the colonnaded way. Petra’s other famous facade is Ad Deir known as the Monastery that sits atop a plateau accessible only by a winding trail of narrow steps. It is less ornate and looms over a smaller plaza than the Treasury’s. The structure of the interior is devoid of any funeral installation.

Few tourists venture beyond Petra’s main sites but there is plenty to look around. The weather-worn rockface is peppered with ancient dwellings - some unfinished such as vestiges of an urban sprawl that came to an abrupt halt. Of particular significance is Jebel Haroun that is one of the holiest site in Jordan. Here Prophet Musa’s brother Haroun is buried. A trip there and back takes about six hours from Petra City Centre involving a strenuous climb of almost 500 metres. Spring is the best time to visit Petra when the days are warm and sunny, when black irises grow in clumps along Petra’s King’s Highway and fig trees sprout out of crevices in the walls of the narrow gorge that marks the entrance to the ancient city. No matter what the season, Petra glows with its serenity, history and enigma.

It was only after one such episode in 2013 that we consulted experts in Muscat who said that he was suffering from recurrent syncope and extreme care must be taken.” Ali said that after consulting friends and experts, he decided to take his son to India, where doctors diagnosed him with BS. “Dr Aparna told us that the only treatment available for my son is to insert an ICD, and we decided to go ahead with the procedure. She said that this is the latest technology, where a home monitor device sends data through wireless to the doctors for evaluation. The surgery was conducted earlier this month. ICD has a battery life of five to nine years and so the patient does not have to be taken to India for check-ups, unless an emergency arises. Abdulmajeed is no more under medication.

How To Take Care Of Your Heart While On Travel People with cardiovascular disease can also enjoy the pleasure of travelling as it’s completely safe for them, provided they stay within prescribed areas of activity, rest, medication and diet. Given below are some standard preparations as advised by Dr. Aparna Jaswal, Senior Consultant Cardiologist at Fortis and Electrophysiologist Escort Heart Institute in Delhi that must be kept in mind for anyone with chronic medical conditions.

1 2 3 4 5

Before planning a vacation people should undergo pre-trip physical examination and a physician’s letter documenting the diagnosis and listing all required medications. They should also take into consideration competent medical personnel and facilities available at the destination they choose. People should carry a complete set of medical records with them -- two copies of medical reports, prescription records and insurance information; one in your luggage, and one to carry with you at all times. For those with pacemakers, always carry your pacemaker emergency card that outlines the type of equipment and date of implantation.

People on vacations tend to indulge in unhealthy diet including cookies, crackers and chips which even labeled as “reduced fat” are made with oils containing transfats. So, these snacks should be completely avoided and replaced with vegetables and fruits which are good sources of vitamins and minerals and are low in calories and rich in dietary fiber. Fatty and processed meats, salty foods, and rich, creamy sauces and pastries that are probably high in saturated fat should be avoided. Avoid alcohol and keep yourself well hydrated to avoid blood clots. Drink plenty of water.

Avoid extremely hot or cold destinations and high altitudes as it poses risks for heart patients.

If someone has had a heart attack and is not used to exercising, they should avoid a trek through the mountains.

6 7 8 9

Patients with a history or risk of heart disease should wear belowthe-knee compression stockings if traveling on a flight of more than eight hours or further than 3,100 miles. This is especially important for travelers over age 50 and anyone with blood clot risk factors. In-flight symptoms such as breathlessness, chest pain or confusion may signal that a person has dropping oxygen levels. In such cases, passengers with heart disease should ask the crew for additional oxygen. Carry contact numbers and website addresses of pacemaker and ICD manufacturers and local representatives of the destination you are travelling.

If you are prepared with adequate knowledge relating to your condition and keep a few safety tips in mind then you can really make your vacations an unforgettable and pleasurable experience.

Wear heart rate monitor to measure both heart rate and to understand the stress the body is under at any given time.

ami Al Ali was born in Deir ezZor, Syria, to father Ghassan, an architect, and mother Sameeha, a graduate in Middle Eastern history. Being the only boy of five children, Al Ali took an early interest in style and fashion. Fascinated by the dramatic transformation of his sisters – in both appearance and confidence – after stepping into a glamorous dress, he was mesmerised by the power of fashion. Despite his loving family background, Al Ali initially accepted that his love of creativity and fashion was a topic he could not communicate with his peers. His small town upbringing meant breaking into the fashion arena took longer than planned. Since the fashion scene in his hometown was classical, opportunity for career growth and industry exposure was minimal. This led to a brave and bold move to Syria’s capital city, Damascus, where in 1991, Al Ali joined the College of Fine Arts to study Visual Communications. It was during his time studying that Al Ali started to experiment with his interest in creative pursuits, excelling in subjects that allowed him freedom of expression, such as interior and graphic design. In 1995, Al Ali’s decision to design and produce a fashion show for his final graduation project astounded his professors, who were impressed at his portrayal of fine arts through fashion, despite this deviating from the purpose of the assignment. Al Ali knew he had to think big to succeed so travelled to the United Arab Emirates to gain valuable international experience within the prestigious fashion houses. He quickly gained respect from the industry, resulting in an immediate, loyal client base, which ultimately led to the creation of the Rami Al Ali label in 2000. izwan Sajan, Founder and Chairman of Danube Group, a leader in construction, building and shop fitting industries, was recently rated among 25 richest Indians in the Gulf, with a net worth of AED 2 billion. He is also counted among the 100 most powerful Indians. It isn’t hard to notice that. Hoardings across Dubai carry his company adverts. In just two decades he has got 42 outlets operational across the UAE, Oman, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, India, China, Kenya and Libya. And now with an aggressive expansion strategy Rizwan is looking to grow his business by 20% in the next two years. So when and how does he unwind? Are you able to switch off? Everybody has their way of switching off. Business is in my veins so I can’t disconnect. When I go on vacation, I leave the message: ‘Out on holiday but available 24/7’. How often do you go on holiday? We vacation twice a year - once with our close circle of friends and the second with my wife only. We are a group of five to six families and we generally go on a cruise every year. It is one of the best ways to enjoy with the family as there is non-stop fun. Dropping anchor, you wake up to a new destination every morning, go around the city, come back to enjoy a

host of activities on board and then party at night. And the beauty is you don’t have to carry your luggage around. It is nicely parked all through the journey. We have done some of the most amazing cruises such as the Mediterranean, Far Eastern, Caribbean and I look forward to doing it again. When it comes to private holidays with my wife we have been pretty much all over the world but one place that we absolutely love is Switzerland. I have already been there four or five times and wouldn’t mind to go again. What is it that you like so much about Switzerland? It is one of the most friendly and relaxing places. We Indians love the snow, the scenery. There is greenery everywhere. Moreover, the people are so warm and welcoming. Where else would you find ‘Wada Pao’ in Europe but in the Swiss Alps? Switzerland is one of the most beautiful tourist destinations that has got a wide range of attractions. It is easy to explore with an efficient transport network - from trains to ferries to cable cars that can easily take you to the mountain re eso s rt rts, s,, llakes, akees, forests, ak o s, ccas asstles tles, museums museum muse umss aand nd othe ot th r resorts, castles, other aarchitectural ar chite ch ittecturall sites. site i es. What’s your favourite airline and why? I always travel Emirates because it has got an excellent network. It is also one of the safest airlines with the most advanced fleet. I generally travel business or first class but I am not totally satisfied with the service. It needs improvement. What kind of hotels do you like to stay in? We mostly stay in upscale luxury hotels and one of my favourite brands is Sheraton Hotels & Resorts. They are absolutely superb when it comes to service and facilities. I also like Jumeirah Hotels & Resorts. How adventurous are you when it comes to food while travelling? I am reasonably adventurous with food. When we go to a new country we definitely want to try the local cuisine and specialties. We are particularly fond of Chinese, Thai, Italian, Malaysian, Indonesian, Arabian and African cuisines. Basically, we enjoy anything that is spicy. But of course, being Indian third day we start to miss our food. You are an extremely well-travelled man. So how do you compare Dubai to some of the world’s top destinations? I would give Dubai 10 out of 10. Everything in Dubai is the best of the best. It is a great destination, a truly international city. Whether you are looking for a beach vacation or shopping or family holiday, Dubai is awesome. It has got the finest infrastructure, superb airline connections, great weather for practically nine months, the very best hotels and restaurants, fabulous entertainment attractions such as the various theme parks, pristine beaches, beautiful desert escapes, phenomenal nightlife and excellent shopping malls. The people are very friendly too and with a mix of nationalities, it is very cosmopolitan. Everyone speaks English which makes it very easy to communicate. It is also very convenient to get around the city with the Metro. Taxis are easily available and pretty cheap. It is in the same league as Singapore, London or New York. In the next four or five years it will be at par with the world’s top cities. And the best part is it offers value for money. My advice to tourists is take at least a week or 10 days holiday in the UAE because it has so much to offer in terms of nature, culture, cuisine. Discover the neighbouring emirates too such as Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah that are absolutely beautiful. 114 Curiosity Sept - Oct 2014
