WELCOME Welcome to the first Lakes International Comic Art Festival and welcome to Kendal and the Lakes. This new festival is born out of a passion both for festivals and for comic art. It’s about celebrating the extraordinary medium of comic art and bringing people, audiences and creators, together to create inspiring and memorable experiences. Comic art is full of humour, innovation, risk, rebellion and beauty and we’ll be aiming to take over the town for the weekend with all of this and more. In our first year we feel privileged to be hosting some of the very best comic art creators in the world including famous pioneers, world-renowned artists and writers and new and emerging talent. From cartoon strips to superhero comics, manga to graphic novels you can find your favourites and, we hope, discover new ones. The festival features an exciting line up of more than 70 writers and artists including some of the biggest names in comic art from the United States, Europe, South America and the UK.

In the spirit of the festival and comic art you’ll find a slightly alternative map at the back of this programme to guide you through the town toon-style. Comic art is all about the imagination and so we ask you to to use yours with this fabulous map devised and drawn by Bryan Talbot (and so a souvenir in its own right). If you want more conventional guidance there are plenty of maps, signs and tourist information points and our free downloadable app (lakescomicartfest) to call upon. We have an amazing group of volunteers in our first year who have dedicated their time and energy to helping us get this “beast” off the ground. You’ll be able to spot them as they will all be dressed in special red festival t-shirts. They are here to help you have the very best festival experience and I want to extend a special thanks to them all. Julie Tait, Festival Director

AND A FEW WORDS FROM OUR FOUNDER PATRONS Thirty years ago I attended my first major European comics festival in Lucca in Italy and it blew my mind. Here was an entire town en fête, a public celebration of the medium we love. Ever since then I’ve had a dream of a UK equivalent and now, at last, it’s here. It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to this, the first comic arts festival in Britain. Bryan Talbot, Sunderland, England

Hello and thanks for coming to the festival! I hope you’re as excited about it as I am. It’s something new for the UK comics world. Whether you’re attending the workshops and talks, watching the films, or just hanging out in the Clock Tower - with such a wide range of things to see and do, there’s something here for everyone. And we’re taking over the town! Mary Talbot, Sunderland, England

If you think comics are just for kids and geeks, you’re wrong. If you think there are no comics that would interest you, you’re wrong. If you think comics are all superheroes and the Beano, you’re wrong. Comics can be about anything, just like novels, television and film are. Come and see for yourself at the Lakes International Comic Art Festival what comics have to offer... Sean Phillips, Milnthorpe, England

LIMITED A (under 12 CCESS s free)

OPEN SATURDAY 10.30AM-6PM AND SUNDAY 11AM-5PM The Lakes International Comic Art Festival will put a spotlight for one fantastic weekend on the brilliance, diversity and quirkiness of comic art. One of the ways we will be doing this is in the Comics Clock Tower, which will be our version of a comics marketplace and artists’ alley. This is your chance to meet creators, see them sketch, get work signed as well as buy books, prints and more. Some work will be available for the first time at the festival. The Comics Clock Tower will not be like the traditional marketplaces that people are used to at comics conventions. For one thing the venue is relatively small so we have had to make choices and limit the number of creators and stalls we can offer to our audiences. We’ll be aiming to feed the hunger of existing comic art fans of all genres whilst, we hope, appealing to a curious, new audience eager to find out more.

Some of our guests who feature in our main events programme will also be appearing in the Comics Clock Tower over the weekend to sign and sketch and meet their fans. A timetable for this rolling programme of appearances will be available via our website from 23 September 2013. The Comics Clock Tower day pass is £3.50 Saturday and £3.50 Sunday (under 12s accompanied by an adult go free) offering unlimited access during opening hours. These can be bought in advance online or by phone or in person via the Brewery Arts Centre as well as on the door. Please note if you buy a weekend pass for £25 (your choice of any 4 ticketed daytime events excluding workshops) you get free access to the Comics Clock Tower for the weekend. If you buy a day pass for £14 (your choice of any 2 ticketed daytime events excluding workshops) you get free access to the Comics Clock Tower on that day.

Aspiring comics artist? Saturday 19 October 3-5pm

Bring your work along to our portfolio review with British Comic Awards winner John Allison. John has worked professionally in comics for the last ten years and will do his best to pass on his knowledge of art, writing, self-publishing and industry practice on a one-to-one basis with 15 minutes per person. Limited places - book by contacting julie@comicartfestival.com.

Stephen Collins and SJ Harris

Two new leading lights in UK comics come together to (literally) illustrate their approach to story design, caricature and more. Stephen Collins began cartooning for The Times in 2003, and has since won several awards, including the Jonathan Cape/Observer Graphic Short Story Prize 2010. His first graphic novel, The Gigantic Beard that was Evil, was published in May 2013 to great acclaim. It is an off-beat fable worthy of Roald Dahl about life, death and the meaning of beards. Steven (SJ) Harris is a British cartoonist and writer, based in London. His first graphic novel Eustace was also published by Jonathan Cape in 2013. It’s a blackly comic, surreal and exquisitely-rendered work and reveals a fresh imagination and talent within the UK comic art scene. The Box, Wildman Street

Is comic art a legitimate medium which can stand on its own two feet? How is it viewed within the visual arts and literary worlds (and does it matter?). Observer critic Rachel Cooke will explore these questions and more with, Dan Franklin (Publisher of Jonathan Cape), Paul Gravett, Bryan Talbot, Joe Sacco and Posy Simmonds. Abbot Hall Gallery

Viz - Better than Nothing?

Mwa ha ha ha ha haaaaa! Prepare to be disturbed. This is a panel talk but not as you know it….Meet scary comic creators Hannah Berry (Britten and Brulightly and Adamtine), Ian Culbard (At the Mountains of Madness, Deadbeats and more), David Hine (The Bulletproof Coffin, The Man Who Laughs and more) and Ravi Thornton (The Tale of Brin and Bent and Minno Marylebone) as they talk about their methods and their madness. Chaired by Alex Fitch of Resonance FM.

Viz is a national institution and one of the true greats of British publishing. An icon for British humour, a beacon of wit in a dark age of banality and a light relief from the grinding futility of everyday life….or so they would have us believe. This is an (almost) unique opportunity to hear Viz creators Simon Thorp and Graham Dury talking about their work. More than 25 years after their last appearance at a comic event they will be talking to Kev F. Sutherland about the comic, the art of crude toilet humour, black comedy and surreal joke and some of their most famous characters like Raffles the Gentleman Thug, The Fat Slags, Felix and his Amazing Underpants and Roger Mellie the Man on the Telly.

COMIC ART FESTIVAL EXHIBITIONS PROGRAMME

The Art of Sean Phillips “Sean Phillips’ pencil and pen reveal a world of stained, neglected architecture and stained, neglected dreams; old, road-dusty cars and old, road-dusty men; women with soft flesh and hard eyes; dudes with hard knuckles and soft eyes; beasties with impeccable suits and too many eyes. The Art of Sean Phillips is a crazed flickershow of jolting pulp imagery and an astonishing document of his journey from a daydreaming kid to a four-color legend. It also, along the way, stands as further proof of the fierce vitality of modern comics”. Joe Hill, author of Heart-Shaped Box, Horns and NOS4R2 Follow Sean’s remarkable “career”, from British girls’ comics, 2000AD and Vertigo to his superhero work for Marvel, DC and Wildstorm to his many creator-owned series with long-time collaborator Ed Brubaker. This exhibition ties in with the launch of Sean’s new artbook and offers an insight into the career and processes of one of the most acclaimed artists in comics today. The exhibition is designed and curated by Janette and Sean Phillips Open normal Brewery opening hours. Brewery Arts Centre - Sugar Store Gallery 6 October - 10 November 2013

Young People’s Comic Art Competition Winners

Brewery Arts Centre - Warehouse Cafe 16 October- 10 November 2013

See the results of some incredible imaginations and talent from young people aged 5-18 studying in Lancashire and Cumbria, England who have created original comic art for the festival’s inaugural year. The inaugural competition judges are Hannah Berry, Sean Phillips, Bryan Talbot and Mary Talbot. In partnership with Game, Dark Horse, Derwent Pencils, Kendal College and Lakeland Radio Alongside this we will be celebrating local comic artist and comic art fan Michael Hanlon with a selection of his illustrations which have inspired people across the world. Open normal Warehouse Café opening hours.

Brainstorm!: The Art of Bryan Talbot Described as “a dazzling and tireless exponent of the comic art form” Bryan Talbot has been one of the driving forces in the comics industry since the late 70s when he created the Brainstorm Comix series for Alchemy Press. Since then he has produced work in almost every genre and pushed boundaries in many ways ranging from sci-fi Victoriana (The Adventures of Luther Arkwright) credited as being the first graphic novel in the UK, to a moving tale about surviving child abuse (The Tale of One Bad Rat) to Alice in Sunderland covering the history and culture of Sunderland. Most recently his highly-acclaimed steampunk detective series Grandville, which follows the life of Detective Inspector Lebrock, employs anthropomorphism and satire to startling effect. This exhibition not only reveals the life and work of a great creator but also an energy and passion which have made him one of the most influential comic art figures to this day. From covers to comics, illustrations from his psychedelic beginnings to a rock star and offbeat paraphernalia, Bryan Talbot presents his outstanding body of work. Opening Times:Fri 4 Oct 6.30-9pm, Sat 5 Oct 2-5pm, Sun 6 Oct 10-1pm Thurs 10 Oct 4.30-7.30, Fri 11 Oct 4.30-7.30, Sat 12 Oct 10-1pm Tues-Thurs 15-17 Oct 4.30-7.30pm Fri 18 Oct noon-6pm Sat 19 Oct - 10am-6pm, Sun 20 Oct 10am-5pm The exhibition is designed and curated by Sharon Tait. COMIC ART FESTIVAL EXHIBITIONS PROGRAMME

Celebrating the new, the innovative, the quirky……and the wonders of tea! A J Poyiadgi is a comics creator and filmmaker. His comic, Teapot Therapy, was shortlisted for the Graphic Short Story Prize and was coloured with genuine English Breakfast tea. His latest project is Teabag Theories, a micro-comic-in-ateabag that uses the humble brew to unravel the mysteries of science. This exhibition will provide a glimpse into Andy’s world and there’ll be a Kendal-related theory all of its own unveiled here and at other locations in Town (limited edition, collector’s items!).

Berry, Britten & Brulightly Hannah Berry is mostly a graphic novelist, but also a writer, illustrator, occasional lecturer and editorial gun-for-hire. This exhibition features artwork from, amongst others, her first graphic novel, Britten & Brulightly, which she began while studying an illustration degree at the University of Brighton. She has exhibited work in solo and collective exhibitions and written for publications including the New Statesman, Dazed & Confused and Huffington Post UK. Drawings fromThe Gigantic Beard that was Evil Stephen Collins has been hailed as one of comic art’s leading new lights. He began cartooning for The Times in 2003, and has since won several awards, including the Jonathan Cape/Observer Graphic Short Story Prize 2010. He contributes regular comics to the Guardian Weekend and Prospect magazine. His first graphic novel, The Gigantic Beard that was Evil, was published in May 2013 to great acclaim. It is an off-beat fable worthy of Roald Dahl about life, death and the meaning of beards. Includes prints for sale.

Getting yourself a girlfriend is easy Getting yourself a girlfriend is easy according to Richard. All you need is papier mache, string, soft material, a balloon, some old fashioned bellows, and a good pair of scissors. And his creator, Gareth Brookes, will show you how (if he can manage to shove ‘Jessica’ up to the Lakes from West Byfleet). Winner of the 2012 First Graphic Novel Competition, Brookes will exhibit the life-size girlfriend of Richard’s dreams and examples of the embroidery and lino-cuts from which he has created his artwork for The Black Project . Gareth will have handmade prints for sale. The Castle Dairy exhibitions are curated by Jamie Barnes.

Hunt Emerson: Original works from the Ancient Mariner and Frankenstein

Popular local haunt Ruskins transforms itself into a Fnarr Bar for the weekend paying homage to Britain’s 3rd or 4th * funniest magazine . Rammed full of Viz gear, original artwork and offering an exclusive peek at some classic memorabilia, this is a oncein-a-lifetime opportunity to delve deep (ish) into the annals of one of the icons of British humour (and comics too).

Hunt Emerson’s association with the Wordsworth Trust dates back to 1997 when his original drawings for Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s famous poem “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” featured in an exhibition at the Wordsworth Museum. These drawings were subsequently acquired by the Wordsworth Trust and form part of a superb collection of artistic responses to Coleridge’s poem spanning 150 years. In 2011 the Wordsworth Trust commissioned from Hunt Emerson a large cartoon strip telling the story of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. The strip accompanied a major exhibition on Percy Bysshe and Mary Shelley at the Wordsworth Museum. Published originally in three volumes, Hunt skilfully manages to distil the full story into 52 frames!

WINDOWS TRAIL

WINDOWS ON COMIC ART TRAIL

Where is it?

What is it? A special trail in our inaugural year to welcome comic art visitors to Kendal and to celebrate our brand new festival. When we announced the festival earlier this year we said we would aim to turn Kendal into a “comic art town” for the weekend. Here is the first step in, what we hope will be, a long-term journey of discovery into the world of comic art for the Town, both for local people and for visitors too. There will be a map of the trail available from 4 October 2013 from the Brewery Arts Centre and on the festival website. This will contain more detail on the participating businesses and groups/artists. By the way you may spot other unexpected things along the way – watch out for reallife characters, new forms of decoration and even a bit of yarnbombing too…. At the time of going to press these are the fantastic businesses and groups/artists who have taken the challenge up in year one with great enthusiasm and creativity. They have set a precedent for the future, given a further insight into the breadth of comic art and, we hope, brightened even further your experience of Kendal and the festival. Thank you to them all

FOOD

FOOD AND MERCHANDISE PAGES

Feed Me! As well as satisfying your hunger for comic art we know that a critical part of a good festival is being able to keep your energy levels up by finding the right kind of food, in the right kind of places and, wherever possible, avoiding long queues. We have done our best to recognize this by working in partnership with some of Kendal’s favourite cafes, bars and restaurants. That isn’t to say there isn’t a fine food and drinks offer right across the Town and you’ll find plenty of places to accommodate different tastes and budgets. We highlight here those based at some of our key venues and/or those who have made an extra special effort to celebrate comic art in its various guises helping to make Kendal a comic art town for the weekend.
