TO SUMMER AT
Our big summer show 42nd Street is full steam ahead tapping its way across our stage and promises to be one of the highlights of the year. Jonathan Church is one of our leading directors and his production of Singin’ In The Rain has been seen across the globe – he has already weaved his magic on 42nd Street, with a first-class company, led by musical theatre royalty Ruthie Henshall, Adam Garcia, Josefina Gabrielle, Nicole-Lily Baisden, Sam Lips and Les Dennis. Rob Jones' designs are sublime (think epic 1930s Deco glamour to rival our neighbours over at Athena!), whilst Bill Deamer is literally tapping up a storm that will send you time-stepping through the streets of Leicester after the show, giddy with the sheer spectacle of it all. Be sure to book your tickets before 42nd Street taps down to London and onto the Sadler's Wells stage, where it joins our other Made at Curve shows; The Wizard Of Oz at the Palladium, and Grease at the Dominion. Our relationship with De Montfort University continues to flourish and as part of this relationship, each year we present a production with the university's BA Hons Drama students. This year Cara Nolan directs Jim Cartwright’s beautiful play, Road. Usually performed by two actors, Cara has reimagined this classic play for a much larger cast, who bring the play to life brilliantly, with flair and imagination.
Unexpected Twist takes Dickens’ famous story of the boy who always ask for more and gives it a thrilling 21st century makeover. Beatboxing, hip-hop music, choreography and terrifically inventive storytelling combine to celebrate Dickens’ great novel afresh. It’s fun, fresh and a joyous night of theatre for all ages.
It’s always a joy to welcome Matthew Bourne to Leicester and especially with his returning triumph, Romeo and Juliet. Matthew has assembled an incomparable group of young dancers to bring his thrilling account of this story to life once again.
As well as the familiar musical titles, it’s vital we all support the next generation of musical theatre talent and we are excited to be involved in two new musicals – Ride and The Book Thief – both visiting Curve this year. Ride is a new musical by Freya Catrin Smith and Jack Williams and is set in the late 1800s, telling the exhilarating story of Annie Londonderry, who sets herself the challenge of cycling across the world. It’s a fascinating story told with panache. The Book Thief originated at the fantastic Octagon Theatre in Bolton. Seen on stage for the very first time in a world premiere new musical based on Markus Zusak‘s global best-selling novel, The Book Thief is adapted by award-winning bestselling author Jodi Picoult (My Sister’s Keeper) and Timothy Allen McDonald (adaptor of Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka and James And The Giant Peach) with music and lyrics by Kate Anderson and Elyssa Samsel (Olaf’s Frozen Adventure).
Curve on the Square was born out of lockdown and wanting to make theatre for you when we couldn’t come together indoors. It turned out to be a huge success, with thousands of people enjoying free performances by local artists on Orton Square. We are thrilled to bring back this free event, with performances by our stunningly talented local artists to the Square this summer. Grab a pint, some sunshine* and let us entertain you in a relaxed, informal and free-to-everyone event. (*Sunshine not guaranteed – but fun most certainly is!)
We’re pleased to welcome National Youth Music Theatre back to Curve over the summer, when they present Kiss Me Kate alongside a new musical, The Boy Who Sailed The Ocean In An Armchair. A few years ago NYMT presented Sweet Charity here at Curve – leading that show was our future The Wizard Of Oz star Georgina Onuorah – so by supporting these talented young people you’re not only supporting the next generation of performers, but might witness a star being born!
It’s been a long winter and we are all thrilled to see a bit of sunshine and share some sunny new shows with you.

ARTISTS
Leicester and the Midlands are thriving with artists and creativity. We are here to support artists at all levels through coaching, networking and artist development programmes.
We are committed to supporting and developing the professional practice of creatives, theatremakers, practitioners and artists who live in or are originally from the midlands. Led by our Artistic Director and Creative Programmes team, we are particularly interested in working with artists who make work in Leicestershire and want to develop meaningful performances and projects with our local communities and audiences.
We work with artists who are early-career and leaving education right up to those who are established and experienced professionals. We understand that every artist’s career is unique and that there are very few set career-paths and so we avoid using age as a determining factor for our opportunities (unless where there is specific funding criteria to support an opportunity). Below are some of the opportunities we have available.
FIRST FRIDAYS
Every First Friday of the month there will be 1to1s with a member of the Curve team open to local artists and companies who want to talk to us. Each slot will be for 30 minutes on Teams or Zoom and is available to book through our website via the ‘What’s on’ page.
Our only request for this time is that it is useful to you. You could use it to:
• Introduce yourself and your work to us
• Get feedback on a script or idea
• Ask questions about the industry or careers
• Talk to us about the experience of being freelance and how we can improve things for the sector
It is a really great opportunity for us to get to know you and your work so book a place and we will see you there!
To get in touch with us, email learning@curvetheatre.co.uk or artistdevelopment@curvetheatre.co.uk

FRANTIC ASSEMBLY
TUE 19 – SAT 23 SEP • THEATRE
One morning Gregor Samsa awakes to find himself changed. To those around him he is dangerous, untouchable vermin. Worse than that, he is a burden. A word said, an action out of place, the opening of old wounds, none of which can be undone. Until now Gregor has woken every morning, quietly left to take the same train, and worked to pay off the family debt. But that world explodes on this morning of brutal metamorphosis.
In their first commission since 2019, and following their hit production of Othello, Frantic Assembly return to Curve with a stunning new show in collaboration with Lemn Sissay OBE, a thrilling new adaptation of Metamorphosis. Combining the fluidity and lyricism of Sissay's adaptation and Frantic’s uncompromising physicality, this promises to be an unmissable retelling of Franz Kafka’s shocking tale of cruelty and kindness; a visceral and vital depiction of humans struggling within a system that crushes them under its heel.
Commissioned and produced by Frantic Assembly, in a co-production with Theatre Royal Plymouth, Curve, MAST Mayflower Studios and Lyric Hammersmith Theatre

WEST END BEST FRIEND
FRI 29 SEP – SAT 14 OCT • THEATRE
A brand new musical adaptation of the bestselling novel. At a snow-covered graveside in 1930s Germany, an illiterate girl steals an abandoned book – Liesel Meminger’s first act of book thievery. As Liesel’s appetite for books grows, so does the Nazi regime and the shadow of death is never far away. When her foster family hides a Jewish boxer in their basement, he teaches Liesel the power of words and together they plant seeds of kindness in a world set against them.
