WINTER – SPRING 2024
SEASON’S GREETINGS! Rehearsals for our big Christmas musical Evita are shaping up nicely and we look forward to welcoming you to Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's masterpiece very soon. Martha Kirby leads our company and is truly astounding in the title role. Alongside the incomparable actors Tyrone Huntley, Gary Milner, Chumisa DornfordMay and the entire company, Evita promises to see this year out with a sensational bang. Leading the team is Hollywood choreographer, Adam Murray. Adam started his career working on the musical Wicked and has since helped bring to life films like Rocketman and Cruella. Our orchestra is led by Stephen Brooker and Ben Van Tienen, breathing magic and majesty into every corner of Andrew’s magnificent score. For the youngsters over the festive period, writer John Hay and illustrator Garry Parsons’ beautiful book The Owl Who Came For Christmas is being brought to colourful life in our Studio Theatre. Adapted by writer Chandni Mistry and director Cara Nolan, it follows in the footsteps of our other adaptations of well-loved stories for young minds at this time of year, vividly realised onstage with imagination and love. Designer Abby Clarke has created a beautiful world for owl Rosie and her friends to fly and alongside Jude Taylor’s new songs, it’s the perfect treat for young imaginations. If you are looking for a treat to banish the January blues, our smash hit production of Sister Act returns and the nuns are looking forward to raising the roof in Leicester once more. Our Evita maestro Stephen Brooker has also worked his musical magic on this new production, which is led by our very own Landi Oshinowo, fresh from her incredible work on The Color Purple, getting us all back in the habit with a new year blast off. We are thrilled to revisit our 2019 production of Hanif Kureshi’s stunning play, My Beautiful Laundrette. Our revival director Nicole Behan has assembled an astonishing company, led by rising
stars Lucca Chadwick Patel and Sam Mitchell. Leicester locals Sharan Phull and Hareet Deol return to Curve, as does the film’s original star Gordon Warnecke. After Curve, as part of the National Theatre’s Theatre Nation Partnership, the production will visit other regional theatres all part of our push to ensure plays and quality drama are well represented alongside the large scale musicals. Irene Sankoff and David Hein’s multi-award winning Come From Away launches its first ever UK tour with us and we are thrilled to be coproducing this life affirming and moving story of the inspirational hope borne out of huge adversity following the horrific 9/11 terrorist attacks in America. Dan Crowder, Bree Smith, Jamal Zulfiqar and Sara Poyzer lead the first-class ensemble, who will bring this truly joyous ensemble musical to life in Leicester. The Come From Away producers chose Leicester as the opening venue because of the strength of our Leicester communities and the spirit of our great city. The new life of Spring heralds the arrival of new work at Curve, as our annual New Work Festival showcases and provides a platform for new works, ideas and writing. Why not make a New Year’s resolution to see something new and a little different, supporting our incredible local artists and next generation of theatre makers. A Chorus Line and An Officer And A Gentleman are both back in 2024. Both productions enjoyed successful runs here previously and we are proud to see them return home. A Chorus Line reunites Carly Mercedes Dyer and Adam Cooper in their acclaimed roles of Cassie and Zach, and Luke Baker (Billy’s brother Tony in our Billy Elliot) and Paul French (our Tin Man last year) lift us up and sweep us off our feet in An Officer And A Gentleman. Both shows tour extensively after their Curve runs.

Further afield, our big 2023 summer show 42nd Street taps over to Toronto for the Christmas season and last year’s hit show The Wizard Of Oz plays the festive season at the Liverpool Empire before embarking on an extensive UK tour. Four Christmas shows all created here in Leicester. As ever, we look forward to welcoming you to Curve and thank you for your continued support. However you celebrate the festive season, we hope it’s with the ones closest to you.

ARTISTS Leicester and the Midlands are thriving with artists and creativity. We are here to support artists at all levels through coaching, networking and artist development programmes. We are committed to supporting and developing the professional practice of creatives, theatremakers, practitioners and artists who live in or are originally from the Midlands. Led by our Artistic Director and Creative Programmes team, we are particularly interested in working with artists who make work in Leicestershire and want to develop meaningful performances and projects with our local communities and audiences. We work with artists who are early-career and leaving education right up to those who are established and experienced professionals. We understand that every artist's career is unique and that there are very few set career-paths and so we avoid using age as a determining factor for our opportunities (unless where there is specific funding criteria to support an opportunity). Below are some of the opportunities we have available.
FIRST FRIDAYS
Every First Friday of the month there will be 1-to-1s with a member of the Curve team open to local artists and companies who want to talk to us. You could use it to: • Introduce yourself and your work to us • Get feedback on a script or idea • Ask questions about the industry or careers • Talk to us about the experience of being freelance and how we can improve things for the sector It is a really great opportunity for us to get to know you and your work so book a place and we will see you there!

ACCESS PERFORMANCES CAPTIONED PERFORMANCES (CAP)
At Captioned performances, the actors’ spoken words are shown as visible text via two display screens on stage, one on each side, similar to subtitles. The text scrolls at the same speed as the dialogue, making it easy to follow with the action on stage.
SIGNED PERFORMANCES IN BRITISH SIGN LANGUAGE (BSL)
ADDITIONAL SERVICES TOUCH TOURS (TT)
An accompaniment to Audio Described performances, Touch Tours are a tactile tour of the stage, set and costumes, giving audience members who are blind or sight impaired greater access to the performance. Tours usually take place 90 minutes (or earlier) prior to the start of an Audio Described performance.
Our BSL Interpreted performances are presented with British Sign Language (BSL) interpretation. The interpreter will be positioned on either the left or right of the stage throughout the performance, and their position will be confirmed online once available.
INFRA-RED & INDUCTION LOOP HEARING SYSTEMS
AUDIO DESCRIBED PERFORMANCES (AD)
Dog spaces are available upon request; please let us know during the booking process and a seat next to the aisle will be reserved for you. Alternatively, a member of staff can care for your dog during the performance. We can also provide drinking water.
During these performances, audio describers provide a live, verbal commentary on key visual aspects of the show for audience members who identify as Blind or sight impaired. The description is presented via a personal headset (available from the Box Office) and includes an audio introduction to the show before the performance starts.
DEMENTIA FRIENDLY PERFORMANCES (DF) Dementia Friendly performances are tailored to meet the needs of people living with dementia. They include adaptations to the show, clearer visual markers and signage in the physical environment, and a relaxed attitude to movement and audience responses during the show.
RELAXED PERFORMANCES (RP)
Relaxed Performances are open to anyone who would benefit from a more relaxed performance environment. Audience members can interact with the performance in their own way and, while the theatre doors will close, guests can leave and re-enter the theatre at any time. We also make adaptations to the show, and reserve a quiet space for anyone needing some time out of the performance.
Available in our Theatre and Studio Theatre. Please ask at the Box Office for a headset.

WHEELCHAIR SPACES IN ALL OF OUR PERFORMANCE AREAS
