Welcome to Curve and our season brochure, packed with plays, musicals, dance, comedy and new work. We are proud to curate seasons of work which are popular, fun and reflect the rich heritage and diversity of our city and county. Congratulations to Cameron Mackintosh, who recently opened his new production of Les Misérables at the spectacularly refurbished Stephen Sondheim Theatre in London. It isn’t long before Cameron and his team return to Leicester to launch the UK tour of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s legendary The Phantom of the Opera. And we return to the Phantom’s Lair later in the year, when Andrew delivers his thrilling follow-up to the legendary original, with the equally moving Love Never Dies. As always, these productions will use our fantastic production facilities for technical rehearsals, before opening here and you get to see them first. Leicester’s Festivals are widely celebrated and we are pleased to be partnering with the Comedy Festival once again and Spark Festival, championing the most imaginative theatre for young audiences. Our New Work Festival has just finished after a season of thrilling new pieces, brilliantly curated by our Associate Beth Shouler. We will be peppering in more new work across the year and as part of this, we are looking forward to welcoming Curve Breakthrough Artist Debris Stevenson back to LE1. Established and new plays are central to this season of work. We are thrilled to be partnering with Frantic Assembly once again on the world premiere production of I Think We Are Alone. Directed by Kathy Burke and Scott Graham, acclaimed writer Sally Abbott’s new play is one not to be missed. In another world premiere, we are delighted to be co-producing Frances Poet’s new play Maggie May, alongside Leeds Playhouse and the Queen’s Theatre, Hornchurch. Maggie May is a frank, funny and profoundly moving account of a woman’s struggle, coming to terms with life living with dementia. You can’t beat an old fashioned thriller at the theatre and Dial M for Murder is one of the best. Tom Chambers and Samantha Womack star. And don’t get confused between Priestley’s An Inspector Calls and Patrick Ness’ A Monster Calls! – both are stunning productions, given visionary interpretations by directors Stephen Daldry and Sally Cookson respectively. As well as theatre which celebrates the spoken word, our relationship with dance continues to flourish. This season you can see cutting edge contemporary dance from Mass Movement, Material Men redux, The Storm, BalletBoyz, LDIF20 & Serendipity, Gary Clarke’s Wasteland and traditional work from Northern Ballet, who visit with Cinderella. We know you love musicals as much as we do and we couldn’t be prouder to be launching the new production of Sister Act; Curve favourite Brenda Edwards returns to Leicester to take on the role of Deloris Van Cartier – a role she was born to play. Alongside Sister Act, hit new musicals Once, Everybody’s Talking About Jamie and Six round off a jam-packed spring season. Get your habits, guitars, heels and crowns ready to be electrified by these stunning productions. Looking further ahead, our Made at Curve production of Roman Holiday is set to be a highlight this year. Mixing the extraordinary songs of Cole Porter and the iconic Paramount film, Roman Holiday is both exhilarating and moving in equal measure. All aboard your Vespas and see you in Rome for a taste of la dolce vita! Chris Stafford Chief Executive Nikolai Foster Artistic Director

MUSICAL XXX

SAT 22 FEB – SAT 21 MAR • THEATRE The brilliant original production of Andrew Lloyd Webber‘s The Phantom of the Opera is embarking on a major UK and Ireland tour. Now in its 34th phenomenal year in the West End, The Phantom of the Opera is widely considered one of the most beautiful and spectacular productions in history. Produced by Cameron Mackintosh and The Really Useful Group Ltd, The Phantom of the Opera will open at Curve this February. The romantic, haunting and soaring score includes Music of the Night, All I Ask of You, Masquerade and the iconic title song. The Phantom of the Opera tells the tale of a disfigured musical genius known only as ‘The Phantom’ who haunts the depths of the Paris Opera House. Mesmerised by the talents and beauty of a young soprano, Christine, the Phantom lures her as his protégé and falls fiercely in love with her. Unaware of Christine’s love for Raoul, the Phantom’s obsession sets the scene for a dramatic turn of events where jealousy, madness and passions collide. The Phantom of the Opera is one of the most successful musicals in history playing to over 145 million people in 41 countries and 183 cities in 17 languages. It has won more than 70 major theatre awards, including seven Tony Awards and four Olivier Awards. The meal is lovingly prepared, and wine carefully selected. The friends are prepared for the usual humorous exchanges they’ve come to expect. CRY BABY

By George Orwell Adapted by Matthew Dunster One of the defining books of the 20th century is re-interpreted for the stage by CYC Act 16+. Surveillance, identity and propaganda were Orwell’s fiction but are now our reality. In the age of ‘alternative facts’ and ‘fake news’, 1984 is startlingly relevant.

Book by Mark O’Donnell & Thomas Meehan Songs by David Javerbaum & Adam Schlesinger Based on the Universal Pictures film written and directed by John Waters Adapted for the stage by the same team behind Hairspray, CYC Musicals 16+ bring Cry Baby to the stage as part of the CYC Season. Wade ‘Cry-Baby’ Walker is the coolest kid in town, a bad boy with a good heart. When he falls for the good girl who wants to be bad, their two worlds collide as the king of the delinquents and queen of the squares fight, flirt and dance their way through 1950s rock ‘n’ roll America.

Berlin. 1930s. German Youth Movement. Control. In a self-written piece created by CYC Musicals 12+, Rogues and Rebels explores the loosely organised youth group, The Edelweiss Pirates, as they break from the indoctrination of Nazi Germany. Evading the subscription age for the Hitler Youth and young enough to avoid military conscription, the Edelweißpiraten were free to explore music and activities heavily restricted by the state and went to great lengths to defy and antagonise the regime, including ambushing patrols and sheltering refugees.

By Dennis Kelly A group of teenagers do something bad, really bad, then panic and cover the whole thing up. Designed for young people and performed by CYC Act 12+, DNA is a sometimes hilarious, sometimes dark look at when ‘it’s just a prank’ goes wrong and the chain of explosive events that follow.

A BITTERSWEET TALE OF INHERITED TRAUMA, RAGING ANTI-SEMITISM, THE END OF YOUTH, AND STAYING IN LOVE... A Scene Change Productions and Greenwich Theatre co-production

By STEPHEN

LAUGHTON

Directed by SARAH MEADOWS

WED 6 – THU 7 MAY • RR2 Jesse is paranoid and he’s frightened and it’s messing up his relationship, his job, his daughter and his life, but Jesse has every reason to be frightened. Anti-Semitism rears its ugly head in a horrific way every 70 or so years, the last time it killed 6 million Jews, the time before that it resulted in their complete expulsion from eastern Europe – and with a 34% rise in violent assaults against Jewish people in the last year alone, Jesse can’t bear to think where we’ll end up this time. Not with a 9-month-old daughter to protect. Then there’s Alex. The absolute love of his life, his everything, his greatest love of all. In a visceral biting play that captures key-moments over a tenyear relationship between a nice Jewish boy from North London and the woman he falls desperately in love with, One Jewish Boy is a bittersweet comedy fuelled by anti-Semitism. Focusing squarely on the inheritances that haunt us.

AS INDUSTRIAL BRITAIN FELL, A NEW SUB-CULTURE EMERGED...

SEQUEL TO THE MULTI-AWARD WINNING PRODUCTION COAL MON 11 MAY • THEATRE In 1994, hundreds of coal miners hung up their pit boots as Grimethorpe Colliery was destroyed, along with the tight-knit working-class community that surrounded it. Wasteland, Gary Clarke’s sequel to Coal, looks at how two generations coped in this era of radical upheaval. As we see one generation grind to a halt, we follow the next into the 90s illegal rave scene, where derelict warehouses and abandoned work spaces became home for a new-found community of music and dance. Bringing together Clarke’s vivid physical dance language performed by a company of exceptional dancers, a community cast of singers, brass musicians, archive film footage, a powerful rave soundtrack and unique art work by Jimmy Cauty (co-founder of The KLF), Wasteland dives head first into a gritty story of loss, hope, escapism and survival. ACCESS PERFORMANCES

ADDITIONAL SERVICES

CAPTIONED PERFORMANCES (CAP)

TOUCH TOURS (TT)

SIGNED PERFORMANCES IN BRITISH SIGN LANGUAGE (BSL)

INFRA-RED & INDUCTION LOOP HEARING SYSTEMS

Screens are displayed in the auditorium running the text (just like subtitles). There is usually a ‘Captioner’ who will make adjustments to the live dialogue as the performance happens.

A sign language interpreter stands at the front of the auditorium/forestage to translate the dialogue into BSL during the performance.

AUDIO-DESCRIBED PERFORMANCES (AD)

An ‘Audio Describer’ describes what is happening on stage to customers who have collected an audio-describing headset from the Box Office.

DEMENTIA FRIENDLY PERFORMANCES (DF)

Dementia friendly performances are tailored to meet the specific needs of people living with dementia. They include adaptations to the show, clearer visual markers and signage in the physical environment, and a relaxed attitude to movement and audience responses during the show.

RELAXED PERFORMANCES (RP)

Tailored for customers who would benefit from a more relaxed performance environment. Audience members are free to make noise and, while the theatre doors will close, audience members can come and go as they please. We also reserve a quiet zone and set up a screening of the performance for anybody needing time out of the show.

Explore the auditorium, set and characters through touch prior to the performance to get a sense of what will be happening on stage, and experience the different voices you will hear.

Available in our Theatre and Studio. Please ask at the Box Office for a headset.

ASSISTANCE DOGS

Dog spaces are available upon request; please let us know during the booking process and a seat next to the aisle will be reserved for you. Alternatively, a member of staff will care for your dog during the performance. We can also provide drinking water for your dog.

WHEELCHAIR SPACES IN ALL OF OUR PERFORMANCE AREAS

All public areas are accessible to wheelchair users, including lift access to the circle level. We have allocated wheelchair spaces for every performance, both in the Theatre and Studio. If you wish to transfer to a theatre seat we can store the wheelchair upon request.

ACCESSIBLE TOILETS

Available on both the stalls and circle levels. We also have a Changing Places accessible toilet with adult hoist on the foyer level, next to door 4 of the Theatre.

ACCESSIBLE PARKING

Available on Southampton Street, in the NCP Rutland Centre Car Park adjacent to Curve, and we have a drop-off point on Rutland Street.
