Living a healthy lifestyle is not a luxury, but it is essential in having a luxurious life. A healthy lifestyle today keeps the money in your pocket tomorrow. “How so?” you may ask. Adopting a healthy way of life allows you to save money on doctor visits and medications that you would need if your health were to fail. Becoming more aware of what we are consuming and how much physical activity we are engaged in, allows us to save money on prescription drugs, involuntary doctor visits and medical procedures that could have been prevented by living a healthy lifestyle. Living in luxury is defined as “living in comfort.” Who does not want to live in comfort and peace of mind knowing they have taken preventive measures to be in good health for a lifetime. A luxurious life does not just consist of materialistic objects, but also consist of a healthy lifestyle.

A Caribbean Scene for 2015

Most of us work hard every day. Whether it’s a 9 to 5, military, or even a homemaker, most of our lives are routine. We do the same things day in and day out.

Well, isn’t it time to shake things up? Add a little more excitement and adventure to the mundane that has become our “normal?” Let’s start living our lives with a little more “luxe!”

When we hear the word “luxe,” we think “luxury.” And to most, luxury equals expensive, which can be true. However, living our lives with a little more luxe doesn’t mean living beyond our means or being financially irresponsible. It is up to you to decide what “luxe” means for YOU! It could mean treating yourself to a much-needed massage or taking a long soak in the tub with your favorite bubble bath. But you know what? It can also mean splurging on something you really want! I love nice things just like the next person. Yet, what’s more important to me than material things are making lasting memories. I want amazing moments that I look back on with a smile on my face and a content heart. So, I’m going to stop waiting for everything to be just right or a special occasion to do the things I love. As Hallmark™ so eloquently puts it, “Life is a Special Occasion!”

I truly enjoy traveling. I’ve been to some breathtakingly beautiful locales such as British Columbia, Jamaica, and Montana… yes, Montana, also known as “Big Sky Country” is remarkable! But I want to see and experience more! Are YOU up for it?

My first destination this year is St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands. I’ll be combining things that I love… crystal-clear water, fun in the sun, and fashion in a tropical paradise! Join me for the Fashionlink V.I. Fashion Weekend, May 21-24, 2015.

Water Your Lawn!

Many relationships suffer because one or both partners compare their relationship to other couples. This can be problematic as often times these individuals never really focus on what areas within their relationship they could improve. The grass will always appear greener on the other side if one never took the time to water their own lawn!

Love is NOT a Feeling!

In working with couples I often hear this statement: “I’m not sure that I love him/her because I don’t feel the same way I did about him/her as I did in the past.” There are generally 2 specific reasons for this rationale. First and foremost, the word love is often misinterpreted to be a feeling or an emotion. Secondly, couples often do not come to discover an accurate definition of love.

Please be reminded that love is not a feeling or an emotion. Rather, it is a decision!

With love abounding everywhere, it’s hard to avoid the embrace of the love bug or at least dancing with it. With fluttering eyes and hidden glimpses, one simply cannot avoid the temptation of flirtation. So why try? Here’s a couple of DOs and DON’Ts to ignite your flame to begin your flirtatious promenade.

Do Flattery! Compliments are a plus among both men and women. When done tastefully, a compliment will almost always yield a positive result.

Don’t Never let your “bad day” vibes creep into your conversation or body language. Keep it light and keep it fun! A grumpy goose is never approachable.

Do Who doesn’t like a good joke? Use your wittiness and sense of humor to break the ice. Laughter makes the heart grow fonder, right?

Don’t Resist the urge to lay it on thick. Subtleness is usually the way to go. That includes perfumes, colognes, and arrogance. Too much of a good thing can also be very bad.

And lastly… Be yourself. Confidence is the key! People want to know you, so show them who you are! Now that you’re equipped, go on now and flirt if you dare!

The desire within to share our life with another person is inevitable. It’s that part of our inner core that refuses to die, no matter how hard we try to choke the life out of it. It always comes back gasping for air and clinging to life, like the villain who refuses to succumb to death in a horror sequel. No matter how hard we try to place our internal need for love in a box marked, “Hazardous Waste,” the desire to love and be loved always finds its way back into our thoughts, demanding we resuscitate it back into our hearts.

The need for love is third on Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and of course LL Cool J, hip-hop artist and actor, coined it in his emotional and thought-provoking rap “I Need Love.” So why have we put it last on our list? Love has caused many migraines, soaked pillows, and restless nights… or at least what we thought was love. Love for many has become a phobia.

We fear it, avoid it, and break out in hives anytime the feeling of real love comes near.

We are afraid of the vulnerability that love brings. Love is the thing we love to hate.

Truth is we all need love, but the question is, are we ready to open our heart and minds to love? Are we ready

to stop saying the word and become love? Can we let go of people who are not showing and giving us the love we know we deserve? I know, love is risky, it’s scary, and it’s a risk that many are afraid to take. However, we are still worthy and deserving of letting love in our lives. No, we can never be sure, but we can’t stifle love by hanging on to fear.

Let go of the excuses, don’t be a love phobic. Your conscious is calling for you to let love in! Stop staring around the room; it’s time to pay attention to what your heart may really need LOVE, LOVE, and LOVE!

5 Ways to Stop Being a Love Phobic 1. Stopping making excuses. You can pursue your goals and still find time for dating and love-the right person may even motivate your goals.

2. Evaluate your feelings. Think about why love is scary, be honest with yourself.

Write down your emotions and reflect.

3. Set new standards. If you were too accommodating in the past, set new guidelines for what you desire in a mate.

4. Trust yourself again. Trust your intuition, judgment, and decision-making.

5. Believe! Just simply believe in love again and that love is meant for your life.

Ingredients 12 large strawberries, hulled 6 ounces semisweet chocolate, finely chopped Vegetable oil, for deep-frying 2 cups dry pancake and waffle mix (plus additional ingredients as directed on package) Confectioners’ sugar, for dusting

Directions Thread each strawberry onto a wooden skewer; place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and freeze for about 30 minutes.

Put the chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on high at 15-second intervals, stirring after each interval, until the chocolate is almost melted; remove and stir until smooth. Dip the strawberries in the melted chocolate; return to the parchment-lined baking sheet and freeze until the chocolate hardens, about 15 minutes.

Heat 4 to 6 inches of vegetable oil in a deep pot until a deep-fry thermometer registers 330 degrees. While the oil heats, prepare the pancake and waffle mix as the label directs.

Chocolate-Strawberry Waffle Ball on a Stick

Dip the chocolate-covered strawberries in the batter, turning to coat; let any excess drip off. (If the batter is too thin, add 1 to 3 more tablespoons dry mix.) Carefully place the berries in the hot oil (skewers and all); fry, turning as needed, until the batter is golden and just cooked through, 1 1/2 to 2 minutes. Remove with tongs and drain on paper towels or a rack. Let sit for 5 to 10 minutes to allow the chocolate to re-harden. Dust with confectioners’ sugar.

Ingredients 1 tablespoon kosher salt plus 1 1/2 teaspoons 3/4 pound linguine 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 1/2 tablespoons good olive oil 1 1/2 tablespoons minced garlic (4 cloves) 1 pound large shrimp (about 16 shrimp), peeled and deveined 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1/3 cup chopped fresh parsley leaves 1/2 lemon, zest grated 1/4 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice (2 lemons) 1/4 lemon, thinly sliced in half-rounds 1/8 teaspoon hot red pepper flakes

Directions Drizzle some oil in a large pot of boiling salted water, add 1 tablespoon of salt and the linguine, and cook for 7 to 10 minutes, or according to the directions on the package.

Meanwhile, in another large (12-inch), heavy-bottomed pan, melt the butter and olive oil over medium-low heat. Add the garlic. Saute for 1 minute. Be careful, the garlic burns easily!

Add the shrimp, 1 1/2 teaspoons of salt, and the pepper and saute until the shrimp have just turned pink, about 5 minutes, stirring often. Remove from the heat, add the parsley, lemon zest, lemon juice, lemon slices, and red pepper flakes. Toss to combine.

Linguine with Shrimp Scampi When the pasta is done, drain the cooked linguine and then put it back in the pot. Immediately add the shrimp and sauce, toss well, and serve.

They say, “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” Just how true is that when you are trying to be “Cupid’s Choice?” Being in the industry for 10 years as a Professional International Makeup Artist, I agree with the quote, but I find minimal makeup usage goes a long way. So for this Valentine season, I would like to share some makeup quickies.

“First a good, clean, moisturized face is always key to a magnificent look!

Keep in mind that you always want to play up your favorite features whether it is your skin, eyes, lips, or cheeks. For the eyes, a dark and smokey look is always a hit.”

Now if you are one that has a fairly large eye (round/almond shaped) a black wide liner on the top and bottom in conjunction with a great mascara, would create more drama and simulate a smokey eye. On the other hand, if your eyes are a smaller (squinty/slanted) shape, a thin black liner at the bottom of the eye, not to connect at the inner or outer corners, will create a wider appearing eye. White liner can be used to open the eye as well when used properly. After all, your eyes are the ultimate connection on a first meeting or date.

Ladies that play up their lips must have a red, nude, and daring color in their makeup collection.

I suggest these three must haves

because you can wear alone or mix and match these colors to create different looks. Red is an instant attention getter! Note, when wearing red there are two ways recommended to apply it.

To create a really full lip, line or place the color just above the ridge of the lip. If you want a more subdued red lip, place the color just below the ridge of the lip. This can also be helpful with other colors, especially if they are bold. This allows a powerful kiss to be left at the end of any night!

If you want to accentuate your cheeks, you must choose or be advised of the color that shows well on your skin. For pink undertones, I recommend browns/bronzier blushes. Skin that has yellow undertones work

well with corals/peachy colors.

And skin with red undertones balance out well with brownish red blush colors. Warm cheeks make your smile much brighter and more memorable.

All these makeup quickies can create amazing looks that will definitely have you in the running to be “Cupid’s Choice.”

Know your skin, your features, and products that work for you. Makeup is a form of art so there are no rules, but there are techniques and beauty products that can enhance your natural beauty.

This issue we’re introducing Kiah Torres of Dallas, Texas. A blogger for over four years, Kiah brings so many elements of diversity to her fans in her blog “From the Rez to the City.” Her Native and African-American roots richly influence her perspective on fashion. She grew up on a Reservation where fashion was limited. As she stated on her site, she “ went crazy for fashion” when she moved to the city. A self-proclaimed “Jesus Freak,” Kiah believes her charge is to “inspire women through fashion and faith.”

While maintaining her blog, she balances being a mother and wife, and working a full-time job. We were ecstatic to borrow a few minutes of her time! Everyone, meet Kiah: Regina: I noticed you speak of your faith often. Do you believe your blog and your insight on fashion “ministers” to your fans... especially your “curvy” followers in some way? If so, how?

Kiah: Most new bloggers also have full-time jobs.

Blogging takes time and lots of it so balancing time is a must!

Regina: What advice would you give to a blogger who opens up about their lives and thoughts to complete strangers around the world?

Kiah: Be careful what you share! Just know that what you put out is fair game for criticism and some comments can be brutal!

Regina: Were there ever times you wish you could have retracted what you posted? If so, why?

Kiah: YES! OMG! I’ve had some outfits that I look back on like…what the?! LOL Regina: Have you ever had any fans or comments that made you uneasy?

Kiah: Men that comment disgusting, inappropriate things on my pictures makes me feel uneasy. I’ve blocked hundreds! I mean eww…AS IF! hee hee Regina: What measures would you advise to protect a blogger and their family?

Kiah: I don’t have locator on my pictures (you know where above the picture it tells your exact location). I also don’t post many pictures of my husband because he prefers to stay off of social media.

Regina: Our theme for this issue is “Luxe is in the Air.” What’s the most luxurious fashion find you’ve scored at a resale boutique?

Kiah: I sure hope so! I hope that my followers leave my blog feeling encouraged that they can be stylish no matter their dress size.

Kiah: I’ve scored some pretty awesome vintage dresses and fur pieces.

Regina: Do you have an example of how you may have been a blessing to a fan?

Kiah: Good photos (quality wise), confidence, and unique style.

Kiah: I’ve had several people reach out to me for prayer or just words of encouragement. I hope they were blessed!

Regina: As proud bi-racial woman who won’t CHOOSE one ethnicity over the other, what influences do your Native and African-American roots have on your fashion?

Kiah: Coming from two cultures with tribal backgrounds has totally influenced my style! I’m naturally drawn to bold prints, statement jewelry, head pieces, fur, feathers, fringe, and vibrant colors. I generally incorporate something from the mentioned attractions in every outfit.

Regina: What are some of the challenges a budding new blogger should be aware of?

Regina: How important is networking between bloggers?

Kiah: I think networking between bloggers is very important, especially in the plus-size community where we all share the same goal or purpose (promoting self-acceptance and ending body shaming). Forming bonds and working together gives our purpose relevance and makes it important. I’ve seen several bloggers working together on one project and the impact is WOW!

Regina: How do you encourage your daughter to view the world, faith, and fashion?

Kiah: We teach our daughter to have a biblical worldview which is based on the infallible Word of God. When you believe the Bible is entirely true, then you allow it to be the foundation of everything you say and do.

Now in terms of fashion, I’m trying to allow my daughter the freedom to express herself through dress, hair, etc. I only intervene if I feel she’s bordering “inappropriate” with modesty (showing too much skin, too tight, etc.) or occasion (like wearing cut off shorts to a formal event).

Regina: What legacy do you want to leave on the world of fashion?

Kiah: I honestly hope that people don’t remember me for my sense of fashion. I hope that I leave behind a legacy that begins in my heart, in my relationship with God. When I’m gone, I want people to say that I loved them, cared for them, and encouraged them through my faith in Jesus Christ - especially my daughter. My legacy will be the impact that I made on the lives of people who God brought across my path.

Queen of the Isle

Curvy Connect Mag recently took a trip to “The Emerald Isle,” Ireland via Skype to chat with the strikingly beautiful Vicki Mooney. It was an honor and a pleasure to spend time with this lovely lady. She is very humble, funny, and is the expert on the plus-size fashion industry in her country. Keep reading to find out how she lost half her body weight, wrote a book, and opened Ireland’s FIRST and ONLY plus-size modeling agency.

Good evening Vicki! I’m so excited to meet you! For those that are not familiar, can you tell us about yourself?

I’m Vicki Mooney and I’m 37 years young. I’m a single mom of 3 kids.

About five years ago I started plussize modeling and in Ireland, it was quite unknown! It was a very rare occasion five years ago that a model is plus-size. “Plus-size” being maybe a size 12, which isn’t really plus-size.

To me that is size healthy. I was about a size 16/18 and I was one of the first women to start rockin’ the streets of Ireland in lingerie. And it took off from there! I was shakin’ my booty down our main street…Grafton Street in beautiful lingerie and stocking…in the snow, mind you. I realized the amount of women that were empowered by it. A couple years into it, women would compliment my style and ask where I shopped, so I started writing my book, Curve-a-licious… next thing I knew, I was meeting models and the industry was just growing here. I thought to myself, “If I don’t do this now, if I don’t open a plus-size agency, somebody else will.” I opened V Plus Models in the Mansion House, which is the “place to be” in Ireland and had the first show. I’m the face and name of the agency and I have 20 plus-size beauties. I do plus-size styling for our TV breakfast show on TV3 and I am a

panelist on Midday. It’s my passion and I love it. That’s me in a nutshell!

How did you become an authority on plus-size modeling and fashion?

“Mia has a very severe speech impediment and it is difficult for her to express what she’s trying to say properly.

For instance, we had a problem where she was using the “F” word when she was trying to say “duck.”

My children are so well-mannered, so when I got the note home from the teacher, I thought, There is no way!”

There was no one here in Ireland doing what I’m doing. It was quite disheartening because about 40% of the women in Ireland are plus-size. Most stores only catered to up to a size 14. There was a stigma attached to shopping in the specialty boutiques. It was very negative. But the stories from other women inspired me… like a woman saying, “I never wore a dress until I saw your style.” So, it took off from there.

Have you always felt comfortable and confident with your size?

No. My transformation began in 2005.

I weighed 28 stones (392 pounds) and I’m quite short.. I’m only 5’6.” I was getting health complications. I was not healthy. I had gastric bypass and lost half of my body weight. I went from a size 32 to a size 16. That was the beginning. I got married young, only 22 and my husband was fantastic!

He accepted and embraced me as a beautiful woman. But inside I didn’t feel beautiful or sexy. I was ashamed and there wasn’t a role model to look up to. There was no one to say to me, “You are beautiful just as you are.” I felt I didn’t belong. Even when I began modeling, I still found myself in awe thinking, “Are these people really telling me I’m beautiful?” Through that, I finally started to accept myself and my body. It is such a pity that it has taken me so long to accept my body.

I have a lot of loose skin on my tummy after my gastric bypass. I have huge hips and wobbly thighs, but I embrace all of that because it’s feminine and it’s soft and it’s beautiful. It took a long, long time for me to get where I am. Thankfully, there are role models now such as Curvy Connect Magazine, so women can embrace and love their bodies and be proud.

In addition to starting the modeling agency, you’re an author. Please tell us about Curve-a-licious.

I realized there are a lot of things curvy women won’t do. For years, I wouldn’t get my legs waxed or a spray tan because I didn’t want them to see my lumps and bumps. So I put out a survey to curvaceous women asking if they pamper themselves. The results were shocking! So, I wrote the “Prep and Prime” section of my book about all these little things you can do at home to make you feel good about yourself.

The other parts are about how to do things on a budget, how to dress for your shape, and I talk a lot about loving yourself.

I’ve seen a photo online of you surrounded by your models. You’re all posing naked for the #StopBodyShaming campaign. Although you’re tastefully nude, did you receive any backlash?

Why did you think it was important to pose for the picture?

We actually didn’t receive as much backlash as you would have thought and it was fantastic! We did get the usual negative comments… “Oh here come the fatties. If they would stop shoving food in their mouth, they’d be slimmer.”

One of my models, Edel said that she had seen a beautiful, empowering photo of slimmer models and she wanted to do a naked shoot like them. I had recently spoken with a woman that was so depressed that she had contemplated suicide because of the shame associated with her body. I just thought, “This shaming has got to stop.” So with this campaign, we wanted to get it out there that, “It is OK, not to be OK.” Your body does not define who you are. It was the most liberating experience of my life! It was amazing for us all to do the shoot together for a very good cause. We launched the photo live on our Saturday Night TV show . It was incredible to say live on TV that it is not ok to shame another person based on how they look.

through. To judge somebody, shame on you. It was pretty amazing to see the amount of positivity that surrounded it.

Now, I’m traveling the country going to different colleges as a keynote speaker, empowering young women.

You’re obviously a very busy career woman and you have three young children. How do you balance your work with your home life? What are some of the challenges you face?

I need to be more organized. I’m always last minute. I am more creative than academic and I don’t plan things as much as I should. My mom helps me an awful lot. I’m blessed. Sometimes I go from 6 o’clock in the morning until 12 at night. The kids are very easy-going and they have great personalities. My days are never regular or routine. It is very difficult to organize, I have to be creative. My PA Sharon is a God-send!

She’s amazing and she is a friend as well, which I think helps.

What do you teach your children, especially your daughter about body image?

One thing Mia knows is that everyone is the same. I’d say in the last 10 years, we have more foreign nationals come to Ireland, so we had an awful lot of racism. For me it was quite shocking because I couldn’t understand why you just can’t accept another person. But the amazing thing about Mia is she sees everyone the same and I think that is important for her to know. If that is your (the parents’) personality, I think you naturally pass that on to your children.

You won’t have to sit them down to talk about it; they will grow like that, which is lovely. Andy and Josh are amazing…

they are typical boys.

You’re a stunningly beautiful woman.

What’s your beauty secret? Do you have a favorite go-to item?

I always do my own make-up. I was a make-up artist for many years with Estee Lauder and I like doing my own make-up. MAC Prep and Prime Powder is my number one. You end up with this beautiful, flawless look, which is magic.

If I have clear skin and lipgloss I’m happy! My nana taught me very young to cleanse, tone, and moisturize. So, I’m a big fan of natural products for cleansing and toning. And Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair…Oh my goodness. That concentrate serum is amazing!

Given all of your life experiences so far, what do you wish you knew when you were younger?

Your body and size does not define you.

I let my weight define who I was as a person as shape my personality. I was always the funny one and larger than life. I realized later that I was trying to make up for the fact that I didn’t feel like I physically fit in. I was trying to make up for the fact that I wasn’t acceptable. When the actual fact is, that had nothing to do with the person I was.

It’s what’s inside…it’s not all that you see out here.

I firmly believe that if you’re a beautiful person inside, no matter what you look like physically, you will be beautiful outside and you will radiate and people will absorb that and be attracted to that person. I wish I had known that as a teenager. I tried to fit in in so many ways without realizing, I didn’t have to.

What is one thing that people would be surprised to know about you?

I can do a Rubik’s Cube in 52 seconds!

Who do you follow on social media?

Any celebrity favorites?

I don’t have a lot of time for social media. I had to delete Twitter and Instagram off my phone. It was getting to the stage that sometimes at 3, 4, or 5 in the morning, the phone is just buzzing. But I suppose Oprah is a big inspiration for me. I was on Oprah’s show in 2012. I Skyped with Oprah. Oprah said my name! (Gasp!)

It was the most amazing thing. Then, I kept reminding myself, “She is a lady just like you.” And the likes of Maya Angelou, bless, who has passed.

Denise Bidot, the plus-size model. She is stunningly beautiful and so honest.

There are very few, but those are the ladies I follow up on. Oh, did I say Kevin Spacey? I just think he’s amazing!

Everything he says is just like, “Wow! Food for thought.”

What do you look for when signing a model to your agency? Any tips for aspiring plus-size model?

I look for uniqueness. A lot of women don’t realize quirkiness makes them beautiful. Having something very different about you is what I look for. Also, look after your skin, and your hair and nails…have that radiant glow about you. We want to see that glow on the skin and for your eyes to sparkle! Being confident when you walk into a casting will outshine all the other girls sitting there. That’s what we want to see on the catwalk.

What items should be a staple in every plus-size woman’s wardrobe?

Perfect jeans, no matter your shape.

Once you find the perfect jeans, buy

a few pair of them and in every color!

Also, a fitted jacket or a leather jacket and knee-high boots are key to your wardrobe without a doubt. And the Little Black Dress (LBD) as well. That’s so important.

Thinking about our theme for this edition, “Luxe is in the Air,” what is the most luxurious item you own?

Neutral Christian Louboutin shoes… that’s a luxury and its heaven! Also, I have a beautiful Julien Macdonald dress…it’s dusty pink satin with a chiffon overlay. I wore it to the launch of my book. It is the most Hollywood, red carpet style dress that I have. I absolutely adore it. As much as I adore it, there is a lady online that’s getting married. She’s looking for a dress like it. So unbeknownst to her, it is in the drycleaner and I am sending it to her. Once you’ve worn and been photographed in something a couple times, you don’t want to keep wearing it. needs to be lived in and full of life!

Lastly, what brings you the greatest joy?

Nighttime with my daughter, that’s my greatest joy. When I put her to bed and she says, “I. Love. You.” and touches my nose. I say, “I love you too.” Then, she says, “I love you more than chocolate.”

I take moments like that to be still.

Just breathe it in and feel that love. I honestly think you can feel that energy when somebody loves you so much. I love all three of my children, but when I walk into my boys’ room and say I love you, they’re like, “We love you too, just five more minutes on the game!”

(Laughs) My greatest joy would be those moments with my daughter and this is terrible…Chocolate! I could have chocolate for breakfast lunch and dinner.

Mardi Gras season is underway! Fat Tuesday is February 17th this year and is a prime time to visit New Orleans to celebrate the rich culture and delicious food.

The streets are filled with people from around the world, brass bands playing music, beads being thrown and unique costumes and masks making Mardi Gras a memorable experience!

Make the most of the festivities. I suggest dressing simply and comfortably. The weather may vary from year to year. Investing in some

comfortable rain boots is a must! Consider layering for maximum flexibility. Try jeggings paired with a nice top and jacket. Keep a disposable rain poncho in your handbag or fanny pack. It’s OK for a diva to be glammed out, but comfort and functionality is highly-recommended!

Remember SAFETY FIRST! Keep your valuables and personal items protected. Experience something new and be opened-minded. What happens in New Orleans stays in New Orleans.

GET READY FOR YOUR CLOSE-UP

There’s nothing like self-confidence to help you sell yourself. Some people are naturally confident and that’s great. As a model, you want to be seen - recognized - photographed and looked up to. You always want to seem like you are on the top of your game.

Being unsure makes it easier to stay comfortably on the couch when you should be out in the public. Whether you are naturally self-assured or not you can develop the art of confidence. It’s essential that YOU believe in yourself to start! So what are some things that will absolutely confirm to yourself that you are that next top model?

One secret here is in truly knowing what it is you are doing. As a model you have to be outgoing, be put together with hair, makeup and clothes, walk and talk and move like a model, always be ready for the cameras to pop out and always look like you are ready to strike a pose for the next cover of Curvy Connect Magazine. There are a lot of skills involved there!

Act the part My number one best tip of all time for obtaining most or all of these skills at no charge is to join the local theatre.

It’s not only free - they will beg you to come out. Small theatre groups never have enough volunteers. You’ll be welcomed whether you’ve ever even seen a production before or not. If you land even a small role you will gain the world of confidence. Speaking, moving, pretending - in front of a guaranteed small but appreciative audience - greatest confidence builder ever. Can’t act?

How do you know? We are ALL acting, every day. Be brave and audition for a role in the next production. If you

don’t get the part, don’t fear. There are scores of things you can do to help them that will also help you.

Small theatres need people to do lights - what is more essential to a great photo shoot than great lighting? Volunteer to help operate the lights and you’ll begin to understand how lighting and shadows and equipment work to make a great scene.

What about helping with wardrobe?

Anyone involved in costumes for theatre has a wealth of knowledge about dressing up, color matching, materials, where to get accessories, etc.

Ask if the director needs an assistant. Do I need to say how much you’ll learn about your own career if you start to understand blocking and sight lines and audience perspective? Plus, you will meet people. Relevant people, creative people involved in not only theatre, but television, radio and community events.

You will start to be known by people who matter to you.

And now, over to you Next best on my list is volunteering for your local cable television network.

They may want a slightly higher level of knowledge if you’re looking to be on air and the opportunity may not be available in every community. But if it is, go for it.

They, like theatre will let you experiment with whatever you want to try.

Many local cable television stations have the same type of shows regular stations do - news, sports, community events - why not volunteer to hostess or co-hostess a talk show? Combine public speaking with on-air camera knowledge and looking great on the small screen? You can’t buy that type of knowledge and exposure - but you can get it for free!

Long before American Idol, I suggested a talent show formatted program for my local cable TV station. They encouraged me to go ahead. We showcased local singers, dancers, bands, magicians and poets. I did stage direction, audio, television cameras and wrote the scripts for the hostess. Do you think any of this helped me in my later writing and photography career? Absolutely, without question!

These disciplines may not directly teach you how to walk a runway - but you will learn a wealth of related talents and the confidence in knowing that you’ve mastered these skills.

Thinking out of the box - do’s and don’ts Does your local fair sponsor a modeling competition? If they don’t - suggest it.

You may not want to compete, but how about offering your services as a judge in the contest? Think of the people you’ll meet in your own industry.

Still at the fair, do you know anyone who exhibits there, or at a trade show of any kind? Businesses often hire models to be spokespeople for them at their booths. It’s another way to be seen and comfortable being in front of people.

Any kind of public appearance or public speaking is a massive confidence booster. Try being an MC at a charity

event, parade or community function.

However, while it is nice to do community work, remember you are ultimately promoting YOU. You are out there being seen, promoting yourself and your craft.

Keep your goal clear in your mind. Don’t bog yourself down with too many projects.

And steer clear of controversy - meaning politics, religion and local events that leave people at odds with one another.

We are in times that have left us divided for so many reasons and you want to be someone that everyone admires!

The higher your profile gets and the more recognizable you become, the more important it will be to be ‘on’ all the time.

I’m not saying don’t go to the grocery store in our pajamas or don’t wear flip flops without a perfect pedicure, but, as you get more recognizable the chances of being caught at less than your best increase. My advice is to always leave the house as though you were heading to a photo shoot and that way you’ll never get caught.

Finally So far we’ve talked about ways you can boost your knowledge, give yourself skills and by doing so, give yourself a tremendous boost of confidence. So this is the part of the article where we get going and get busy!

You know by now that I believe in hard work as well as talent. If you are not doing something EVERY DAY to further your career, you’re not giving it your all. So while volunteering for the local theatre group or MCing a charity auction might seem like a lot of time invested - it is time invested in yourself and your modeling career.

Think though, how else would you have spent that time? And if your answer is cruising the web or watching TV or lazing on the couch then realize how much more valuable that time could be if you pursued something to enhance your true calling.

I believe in every curvy girl with modeling aspirations that’s reading this right now.

I know there is a spot for each and every one of you. The industry is huge, growing all the time. Get out there right now and make a spot for yourself! Get ready for your close-up and the day will come when the whole world wants to see it!
