MODERN

Farmhouse

With over 30 Master Builders Association Awards, including multiple regional builder of the year wins, it’s easy to understand how Hedger Constructions have built a reputation as one of Victoria’s best custom home builders. Specialising in luxury custom builds, every Hedger Constructions home is masterfully crafted with a considered approach toward innovative and sustainable design, and this new Thornton home is no exception, utilising a myriad of recycled and sustainable materials to create a modern farmhouse with rustic appeal that takes full advantage of the sweeping vistas to the Cathedral Ranges.

24

Situated on a private golf course, the brief for this

necessary bushfire protection for this project.

27

A key aspect of the design was to separate the communal and entertaining spaces from the private quarters via a separate bedroom wing. Each of the spacious bedrooms features the V Groove lining boards for continuity of design and the rural aesthetic. Each bedroom is served by a luxurious floor to ceiling tiled ensuite, accessed via a floor to ceiling barn style door which blends seamlessly with the room when closed. A custom recessed bedhead is an added feature to each suite.

28

In the living room a bespoke wine rack crafted by matching the V groove lining with paneled sheet and carefully integrating the distinctive rod design creates a striking wall feature.

Extensive landscaping including decking and pergola created from recycled timber were included with the scope of work and the outstanding finish to this exceptional country home is testament to the skilled tradespeople and success of the relationship between everyone involved in the project. Hedger Constructions are master builders that service Metropolitan Melbourne, North East Regional Victoria, the wider Yarra Valley region and Surf Coast Shire. Focusing on sustainability, innovation and quality, the name has been associated with many of Victoria’s luxury home projects. Their award-winning homes support their preceding reputation, and with a simple process, taking the lead from design to turn-key, there is no question of the service quality. As with the Thornton residence, the

Beach House

Nestled above the cliff’s edge with spectacular unobstructed views over the Pacific Ocean, is this striking contemporary residence by multi-award winning Gremmo Homes that since completed has become a new landmark on the Turrimetta Headland. Being situated right on the oceanfront, material selection was critically important in the construction of this residence to ensure that the home could withstand the harsh Australian coastal conditions. Cladding of natural Berrimah stone and Blackbutt timber were selected for their durability and organic qualities, which add an earthiness to the home’s exterior and ensure it blends harmoniously with the stunning natural surroundings. They will however also play a major role in the story of the home’s evolution as they age and weather over time, adding to the rustic coastal aesthetic of the design.

Homes fit for

ROYALTY From French Provincial to Palace of Versailles, Royale Constructions have shown time and time again that they can capture the functional elegance and opulence of European homes in Melbourne’s affluent suburbs. Since 1982, Royale’s Peter Johnson has produced exquisite Georgian and French provincial-style homes, emphasising the preservation of Melbourne’s stunning heritage architecture. The characteristic bespoke residences consistently demonstrate Peter’s first-class craftsmanship and add to his unparalleled reputation as he draws inspiration from his 40 years of experience and knowledge gained from extensive study and travel. Frequent trips to Europe allow Peter to bring home design styles and a thorough understanding of the quality and elegance that defines luxury European architecture. The result is a series of contemporary Australian homes with classic, timeless period facades and interiors.

60

61

Peter maintains meaningful relationships closer to home, with many dating back 20 years; there is a level of trust between Royale Constructions and the artisans and tradespeople they use, that ensures quality and respect for the process and outcome.

62

While it is necessary to trade internationally for some raw materials and featured interiors, the focus is on locally sourced products and Australian materials such as beautiful Bruhn Limestone which is frequently used in the construction of their homes. This means that the finished products maintain the style and quality of a modern Australian built home without compromising the luxury of European design. Peter and the Royale Constructions team have made their mark on the Melbourne landscape. The leading designers and builders have brought Melbourne to the forefront of outstanding international architecture and design. Offering a complete turnkey service, their commitment to the process from start to finish makes your property their sole focus. Not quite the Batmobile, but these prestige vehicles are housed in what could be likened to the Batcave, an underground cave, excavated by Mardini Constructions below a spectacular clifftop home in Bronte overlooking the ocean.

69

Rarely attempted by other builders, the tunnel often becomes the crowning feature of the home, their striking and unique aesthetic achieved through a combination of skilled precision and artistry that Elvis prides himself on. By cutting into existing sandstone and supporting the space with reinforced concrete, the work is delicate and meticulous yet has no impact on neighbouring homes as it remains underground. Each project emphasises the natural beauty of the stone it exposes with walls that are hand chiseled by Master Stonemasons to reveal engaging textures and patterns. By reusing excavated rock where possible and often incorporating natural occurring running water into the feature walls, Mardini tunnels are a dynamic way to reconnect your home to nature, standing as a reminder of the history and beauty of the land your home is built upon.

70

71

72

Far from merely exciting and engaging, these astounding tunnels and channels serve a practical purpose as well. Providing an extra element of security and comfort, an underground route allows inhabitants to travel between spaces that would typically be separated. Sparing occupants from the elements, a tunnel is an accessible solution for older people, those who require wheelchair access or a forgiving terrain for anyone who can’t face the exertion of 50-150 steps with arms full of shopping. Winner of 19 Master Builders and Housing Industry Awards, Mardini Constructions is a multi-award winning family owned business that specializes in challenging builds, heritage home restoration and remedial construction. Providing personalised service, Mardini Constructions is dedicated to completing each and every project to exceptional standards.

FARMHOUSE LIVING 78

Timeless sophistication meets relaxed country living in Metricon’s gorgeous modern farmhouse The Fontaine. Incorporating 570sqm of living space on a single level, including a separate guest house with its own kitchen and laundry, the Fontaine is spacious and elegant, playing homage to the classic farmhouse - localised with a touch of classic Hamptons architecture.

The legacy of farmhouse living is reflected in various architectural features including Linea board cladding to all exterior walls, feature stone around the fireplaces and on chimneys, and raked, timber clad ceilings. The Fontaine has been perfectly designed for family living, with two separate bedroom wings allowing for separate sleeping quarters for children and adults. Whilst a myriad of elegant interior and exterior living spaces each designed to encourage a connection with the natural surroundings, brings everyone back together, making the Fontaine the perfect home for an acreage or coastal lifestyle.

Throughout the home there is an ambiance of relaxed luxury. In the main open-plain living area, which incorporates living, dining and luxuriously appointed kitchen, the feeling of spaciousness has been further emphasized by leaving the ceiling rafts open, creating an airy atmosphere that flows through to the pool-side alfresco, in a seamless transition between interior and exterior spaces. It is precisely this open yet comfortable and inviting aesthetic that allows this classic home to exist without pretension despite its unmistakable opulence.

ROZELLE RENO Nestled into the heart of Sydney’s inner-west, this Rozelle property has undergone a metamorphosis, thanks to the combined efforts of Avenue One, who designed and project managed, builder Vista Build (www.vistabuild.com.au) and interior designer Bone Made, who took the property from a dilapidated semi-detached dwelling and transformed it into a bright and beautiful modern home.

Not renovated or updated since construction, the extent of the transformation has made the home entirely unrecognisable. 99

Anchored to the landscape, Avenue One have mastered the difficult sloping block by excavating through rock and embracing the site’s mature trees, and despite the obstacles have quite remarkably designed a home that captures water views in most rooms, without disrupting the surrounding environment.

100

All Avenue One designs emphasise the power and beauty of natural light. In this property, daylight has been harnessed to illuminate the home through large operable skylights. The open plan design of the kitchen, living and dining areas allow this valuable natural resource to travel through the home unobstructed. This inspired design element frees the property from the confines of relying on a directional aspect for energy efficiency, and ensures the home is light and bright.

The tension of sharp architectural shapes and minimalist design has been softened thanks to an expertly chosen material selection that includes polished concrete floors, feature timber balustrading and timber veneer cabinetry combined with stone benchtops. The clean lines and neutral palette, draw the eye toward the harbour vista bringing the outside in. A connection to the external environment has been further emphasised by a continuation of the concrete flooring onto the generous alfresco area, creating a seamless transition from the interior to exterior which is accessed via stacking glass doors which allow the space to be fully opened up to create an expansive space for entertaining.

One particular property had really caught Yuge’s eye. More on the particular reasons why shortly… but I most certainly am always up for a wonderful spontaneous situation and was keen to drive to the property for a look. A few minutes later we found ourselves driving down the driveway. Nearly a hundred acres, it’s not like stepping off the footpath to the front door, so already we felt we were invading someone’s privacy. Not the type to knock on random people’s doors… and Yuge even less inclined …I turned to my left to say would you go to the door, but before my sentence was finished Yuge was already out and headed to the house. Before she answers some questions herself about this property, I’ll let you in on something about Yuge… Yuge LOVES modernist homes. Our usual style of industrial, rustic, Edward Scissorhands meets Addams Family meets Swiss Family Robinson style homes is normally happenstance and budget driven, and many conversations have been had about one day building or seeking out a modernist building. I’d go as far as saying Yuge was more than keen to make these discussions a reality sooner rather than later, thus the immediate jumping out of car for this property. In other circumstances I have begged her to knock on a door or approach a farmer when we have come across a falling down flour mill or near roofless ruin whilst pleading with her about the ruin’s potential, sometimes driving on or being forced to get past my own shyness in order to ask. So where were we… Yuge JUMPED out of the car. Ever the treasure hunter, I am loving this! I don’t want to paint Yuge as reserved or cautious because she isn’t but compared with me, who pushes the ‘mad plan’ button daily, she is generally not as crazy. So, I assume this property has somehow turned her into me…. I sit back, smile and look forward to the ride. DAVID From turning off the road around Seymour and heading right … I know I was enchanted by the landscape … but you really turned it up a notch. Not saying you aren’t adventurous but you went from zero to a hundred miles an hour very quickly. Was it that the architecture just took you away and you then let all formal constructs and caution go? … because I love living like that and watching you in that few hours was one of the greatest buzzes of my life.

As this remarkable property is now intended as our forever home, I see it as an ongoing project that we will all take great pleasure in watching evolve over time. Fitting it in between the many other projects we currently have underway is for now our biggest challenge, some of these include; •

A new series of perfumes in collaboration with Chemist Warehouse due out in the coming months. This was a great project where we were really invested in every part of bringing this to life, from designing the bottle and packaging right through to the scent.

Restoration of a very old warehouse, one of the oldest buildings in the Daylesford area, which is very grungy, full of treasures and basically a wonderful mess. I think it will be one of the funnest, maddest tidy ups because it has some stunning stone and brick walls and cool architectural features.

For the last few months we’ve also been building a multifaceted tech business including NFT’s cryptocurrency, architecture in the meta verse and a new digital sign business.

Some very large sculptures of acrobats on horses in production.

A new print making workshop and a new 1000sqm pottery workshop in Daylesford which I am very excited about, as after many years of being lost in an early adulthood blackhole, I started to make pottery and it really did save my life. This will honour that time in my life and what started me on my journey into art.

I’m somewhat embarrassed to say this is a drop in the ocean of projects but writing them all down can be overwhelming. I find it never pays to overthink all that you have going on as it just seems insurmountable, whereas if you just do it without overthinking it is often the answer to outcomes. DAVID BROMLEY

RABY BAY Beauty

Nestled in the tranquillity of Queensland’s Raby Bay area, Stockton Homes has constructed a paragon of luxury coastal living that draws inspiration from the classic architecture of Hampton’s homes – the favoured summer destination for New York’s affluent. Offering unrestricted views of Moreton Bay, Moreton Island and North Stradbroke Island, this triumph is a true dream home, high on luxury yet skilfully designed and constructed to be low on maintenance. From the street, the three-level home is an absolute stand out. Contemporary features such as an asymmetrical sloping roofline and a cantilevered pool with glass viewing window combine with classic coastal elements such as white painted timber and feature stone. Asphalt shingles and a barn-style double garage door which were both imported from the USA add to the Hamptons aesthetic. Carefully selected to suit the coastal environment as well as for both sustainability and energy efficiency, materials include core filled blocks, and treated timber stick frame, which are both lightweight and offer high thermal ratings.

Encaustic tiles from Edge Tile + Stone have also been used around the rooftop pool, visible from multiple angles they add a striking aesthetic to the exterior. The resort-style rooftop pool provides spectacular views of the entire Moreton Bay region. Facing to the north, the area captures the full sun all day. The pool’s construction also involved an inbuilt drainage and overflow outlet and technology designed to absorb vibrations that would typically channel to rooms below, maintaining peace and tranquillity for the whole household. The pool includes bench seating and an icebox for the perfect place to relax, unwind and take in the stunning water views. This exceptional home would have been an impressive feat for an experienced builder, but in the case of 25-year-old Lane Stockton, who personally oversaw the project from start to finish, it is certainly the start to a very promising career.

Balmoral Beach is arguably one of Sydney’s most desirable locations, offering a safe harbour from harsh winds and big waves it encourages a relaxed luxury lifestyle that has been beautifully expressed in this new home which features exquisite Quadrette Parquetry in A Grade Slavonian Oak timber by Mardegan Legno. Sourced from Hungarian forests the Slavonian and Hungarian wood has a noble history of producing wine barrels and furniture for European aristocracy. It wasn’t until the 60’s that the timber was first used in residential homes. Handcrafted into exclusive panels by Mardegno Legno, each floor is a symbol of sophisticated excellence. Entirely free from formaldehyde and other toxic substances used in many timber floors Mardegan Legno use special organic oil based mixtures and UV dried water based varnishes to ensure a safer more sustainable product that retains the characteristics of a luxury timber floor with less maintenance.

135

Handcrafted by Mardegan Legno, the timber is treated with a unique sandblasting technique that makes it more durable and scratch resistant as the soft surface material is removed without damaging the product. The floor has been finished with matt “Quercia Platino” colour which has also been used on the borders and mouldings to create a soft shine that protects the floor and gives it a subtle polished appearance. Overall the effect is one of understated luxury that perfectly complements the coastal location. With the raw texture of the wood enhanced by the sandblasting process the timber is worked into intricate geometric patterns and fluid curves that add dimension to each space and ensure the floor is the stand-out feature of the home. The seamless blend and contrast of different tones in each panel is reflective of Mardegan Legno’s ability to beautifully convey emotion through colour and form and from the perfect curves to precise symmetrical patterns the flooring of this home is a flawless example of fine artistry. See the Mardegan Legno website for more information www.mardegan.com.au or visit their showrooms located at: 128 Pyrmont Bridge Rd, Annandale, NSW 740 Lorimer St, Port Melbourne, VIC 40 Wyatt St, Newstead, QLD

MOROCCAN

Masterpiece

Visitors to The Riad could be forgiven for thinking they've come across a mirage, or taken an instantaneous magic carpet ride to a lush desert oasis complete with towering date palms and an opulent palace of ornate pavilions, glittering pools, splashing fountains and cool marbled colonnades. Yet this sumptuous vision is very real indeed, located in the heart of Queensland's Hinterland - a Moroccan masterpiece brought to life in meticulous detail by Artnow International.

139

140

For the couple who call The Riad home, this exotic masterpiece is the embodiment of their wonderful memories of travels throughout the Middle East, particularly Morocco, where they fell in love with the culture, Moroccan style, inspiring people, and experiences. From Casablanca to Fez and Marrakech to Tangier they explored markets, befriended local artisans and brought with them back to Australia a myriad of collectables, art pieces, furniture and rare rugs to embellish the interior of their dream home.

BESPOKE and BEAUTIFUL When reviewing their work, the difference between most flooring suppliers and installers, and the highly skilled artisans at Antique Floors becomes clearly evident. Beautiful bespoke finishes are their forte’, so you’re not simply looking at a floor, but a work of art, where there is no questioning of the time and expert craftsmanship that has gone into creating it.

155

156

The Black Raven floorboards by Antique Floors are an absolute stand-out in this gorgeous Vaucluse home. Installed in a beautiful basketweave pattern, sawn texture and finished with LED HardWax Oil, the texture and tones exposed in the timber create a richness that adds warmth to the expansive spaces and ties together classic elements of the architecture with the contemporary styling. Throughout the home, the exquisite attention to detail by Antique Floor’s Craftsmen is clearly evident, no more so, than on the sweeping multi-level staircase, and the entry where the timber has been expertly laid around marble tiles which were supplied by the client. This creates both a stunning focal point and cleverly defines space. This beautiful Vaucluse home is a striking example of the diversity of styles and quality craftsmanship that Antique Floors delivers to clients. “I knew from the start that the level of customisation Antique Floors could create for me was going to be a perfect fit for this family home. They transformed the floor of every room from tired tile and carpet into a beautiful rich backdrop, which is luxurious to walk on, yet so hardwearing it will last a lifetime.” Louise - owner

157

Another example is the extensive range of luxurious flooring options by Antique Floors, this Killara home features a stunning Double Herringbone in brushed French Oak which has been beautifully laid with borders and changes of direction. Equipped with extensive experience in designing and building her own homes, owner Melanie had high expectations for her new floor and was desiring of very specific grain and shade of timber. Unable to source it, she was then referred to Antique Floors and was blown away by the choice,

helpfulness and expertise of the Antique Floors team and the exceptional quality of the finished product. Killara’s sumptuous living spaces feature earthy, autumnal tones and exquisite artworks, beautifully complemented by the flooring which adds a rich organic quality to the interior.

You were able to see fashion powerhouses and personally interact with emerging trends and styles. What brands were you most moved by? The Dolce & Gabbana Alta Moda private event was a once in a lifetime experience. Domenico Dolce & Stefano Gabbana kindly invited me to their four day Venice Alta Moda event showcasing their entire fashion and furniture collections. I was presented with a brand experience like no other, in addition to receiving mentoring by Domenico on the lifestyle of Dolce & Gabbana. We attended private Venetian dining and clubs in the company of my Italian colleagues with the likes of Heidi Klum, Jennifer Hudson, Megan Thee Stallion, P Diddy, Vin Diesel, J Lo, and the Kardashians, to name a few. You must have gained insight into emerging trends. Are there any themes we should be looking out for? The luxury brands individually represented their own trend setting themes through their branding. and tone on tone textured fabrics remain a strong choice with the Italian brand interior design teams. The furniture designers are signalling nature’s colours to breathe life back into people’s private homes. One exciting development is the new, patterned leathers introduced in Etro and Bentley collections for the season. Patterned leathers are giving our leather loving clients an enjoyable choice of stylish patterns usually only available in fabric. The patterned leathers offer something different whilst still having the benefit of being easy to clean and the sumptuous feeling of full grain leather. Personally, I am drawn to selecting historical pieces, decorated using ancient techniques, manufactured in natural stones or carved from wood. The past few years have given clients a chance to reconnect with the natural world, and many seek to bring those organic qualities into their homes.

CARIBBEAN

Colonial

A true visionary is able to see something that others can’t and that is exactly what occurred when interior designer Kate Walker found what would become this gorgeous new ‘Caribbean Colonial’ inspired home. The 40 year old Mount Martha property had lingered on the market for some time, with no one biting. Those who viewed the home were unable to see past the dated salmon coloured carpet, polished black granite and tired interiors. However with her renowned artistic flair and extensive renovation experience Kate was instantly able to recognise the property’s true potential, immediately purchasing it with the intention of transforming it into a new home for her blended family.

171

Despite the homes ‘good bones’ the floor plan required extensive reworking, including the creation of a new entry to the property which previously led directly down a hallway to the laundry. The front verandah was enclosed and a new portico added to create a vibrant and welcoming entry via a bold pink front door that greets guests and introduces them to the bright and airy spaces within. The tired laundry has been transformed into this bold and beautiful powderroom that reflects the flamboyance of Floridian homes, defined by spectacular Gucci Heron wallpaper, pink marble and brass accents.

172

The contrast of white walls and dark timber floors, creates the Colonial aesthetic and at every opportunity glazing has been replaced and ‘highlight’ windows added, ensuring home is flooded in natural light. The kitchen was moved from a dark lower corner of the house and has become the hub of the home, centred around a striking stone benchtop that features veining in olive green, charcoal, light grey and taupe, beautifully complementing the black and white base palette.

173

At the rear of the property is the ultimate Miami-esque resort style entertaining space, featuring a tennis court and new pool and spa, complete with sun lounges and candy pink umbrellas. Kate’s favourite space however is the rear deck that features wide timber decked verandahs and plantation style fans. “Having a drink in the evening, with the sunshine pouring in and the outdoor fans gently spinning in the breeze, washes away the worries of the day.” See more at www.katewalkerdesign.com.au

GLASSHOUSE Designed and built by architect Sarah Waller, this dream house is located on one and a half acres of tropical

gardens surrounded by natural Australian bushland in the scenic Noosa Valley. Drawing inspiration from midcentury modernism’s simplicity and sophistication, the design features similar themes to Mies van der Rohe’s ‘Farnsworth House’ and Philip Johnson’s ‘Glass House’ with the addition of Sarah’s own award-winning style. Defined by a floating terrazzo slab that contrasts with black battened walls plus long expanses of full height glass and a near flat roof, the home has an elegant and streamlined linear form. The walls of glass spanning the length of the home allow for an abundance of natural light, scenic views from within and give the home a unique appearance of transparence.

URBAN

NEO-BAROQUE A startling, and somewhat controversial, sight in the conservative Melbourne enclave of Toorak, architect Billy Kavellaris’ own extraordinary residence – JARtB House -- blurs the lines between both art and architecture and architect and artist. Challenging the norms of residential architecture, the home is a striking focal point that forces one to ask whether it features art or is art?

195

196

The design draws inspiration from the extravagant Baroque period, reinstating the role of architect as artist and craftsman, creating a fusion of all the arts and incorporating grandiose ideas that flout convention and elevate Kavellaris’ to a status of true visionary. Taking Baroque ideas and incorporating them in a contemporary language, the front facade is essentially a great staircase with a hole punched through it and a seven-metre cantilever.

197

198

199

Wherever you walk through this extraordinary residence, you experience art. The entire property has been designed with rigorous consideration of every element. Intended to be elevational, spaces are designed like a picture frame, with materials such as exquisite stone from G-Lux, carefully selected as pieces of artwork in themselves.

200

The 13 murals that comprise the facade were created in different locations around the world by Spanish artists PichiAvo, then ‘stitched’ together as one big mural. The actual facade sits inside the building, so when you are in the art gallery and look up you can see the outside of the building inside the space. On the upper level the glass art exterior allows an ambient light to permeate through to the interior, adding vibrancy and colour.

201

A 55-metre long art gallery stretches from the front door right to the rear of the block. Raw finishes such as concrete walls are juxtaposed with luxurious materials and of course a myriad of art that includes an entire wall of paintings, contemporary sculpture and inspired furnishings.

Says Kavellaris, “Some people might not like the house, it might be kitschy or confronting, but the idea is to provoke people to think and to take a position on what they think architecture should be. Art is not defined as ‘in’ or ‘on’ the building. Architecture and art cannot be separated. JARtB House becomes liveable art.” See more at www.kud.com.au

LAS PALMAS Inspired by renowned architect Richard Neutra’s Kaufmann House, Las Palmas

captures the essence of California’s Palm Springs on the waterfront at Noosa Heads. Framed by palm trees and a funky garden of cacti and succulents, Las Palmas pays hommage to mid-century modern architecture through strong horizontal plains, linear volumes and a material selection of concrete roof and walls, anodized aluminum battens, feature breeze blocks and honed concrete steps and terraces.

206

Built by GV Emanuel Constructions, Las Palmas is a collaborative effort between the owners, who after an architectural pilgrimage to Palm Springs and a visit to the Kaufmann house, wished to integrate various design elements into their own property, and Tim Ditchfield Architects, who was awarded the 2021 Gabriel Poole Award for Building of the Year. Designed around a grassed courtyard, the glass walls of the main living space enable a visual connection from the street front to the river beyond, serving to anchor the home in its stunning natural environment.

GIRT by SEA Written by Kandi Revian

Australians all let us rejoice, For we are one and free, We’ve golden soil and wealth for toil, Our home is girt by sea… There are few children hearing the words for the first time who haven’t queried the fourth line in our national anthem– ‘Mum, what is girt by sea?’. The question answered, ‘Surrounded by the ocean darling’, the thought was then permanently dismissed from mind - despite a lifetime of recitals at school assemblies, sporting events and other official gatherings. Not so however for multi-award winning Perth photographer Tony Hewitt. Growing up on an Australian military base in Malaysia his creative, visual mind took over. He was not satisfied with a simple verbal response. But what does it ‘look’ like? It was a question that he pondered for decades, that is until he teamed up with colleague, Denis Glennon, a fellow photographer and adventurer, and embarked on the journey of a lifetime. I was first introduced to the extraordinary ‘Girt by Sea’ project by a client. We were sitting in his Osborne Park office, discussing creating a book that would showcase their history building some of Perth’s most luxurious homes when the ‘Girt by Sea’ book was placed in front of me. The point of this action was in reference to the book’s size, but when I opened the book I was immediately mesmerised by its contents - page after page of beautiful abstract works of art. What is this book I asked? Where did it come from? As an art lover I was surprised I knew nothing of it. When it was clear what I was looking at I was completely and utterly dumbstruck. These are photos? Of Australia? When I left the meeting I immediately called Denis, I was in awe and wanted to meet the people behind this incredible project.

“Every single day was awe-inspiring. We were two kids having a great time. Our aim was to come back with a never been seen idea of what ‘girt by sea’ really means and give it a new dimension for all Australians.”

A Cesana 210 light plane was customised for the expedition with special windows and wind shields and two pilots engaged - Roger Avery, with extensive commercial flying experience, and Steve Kruger, a former air force test pilot. For safety reasons, the pilots needed to swap every four days throughout the 31-day journey covering over 34,000 kilometres, with one flying and the other playing catch up either by commercial plane or road. The preparation was impressively accurate - despite the opportunity for so many things to go awry, amazingly the entire trip came in within a single hour of the predicted time! Naturally, before such an expedition could take flight, there was the notso-small matter of how to cover the substantial costs involved. Thanks to a previous relationship, Denis was able to convince Australia’s largest camera house, Canon to sponsor their venture, on condition that Tony and Denis use standard Canon consumer-level cameras rather than professional equipment for all the photography. Knowing the spectacular imagery that was captured was done so on consumer equipment makes the outcome all the more extraordinary.

217

THE JOURNEY Once the plane finally took off from Jandakot Airport, WA,

220

At the end of 31 days, “We got very emotional when we realised we’d crossed over the place we started from and the journey was over,” says Tony. “We were the first people to circumnavigate Australia by light plane in one continuous hit.” The following months were spent sifting through the tens of thousands of images in preparation for the Girt by Sea book and exhibitions that took place in Sydney and Perth where the vast collection of photos was whittled down to a selection of 100 stunning images. Captivating in every sense of the word, the spectacular imagery showcases the diverse beauty of our island home in mesmerising abstract shapes and textures, and colours that range from earthy greens and browns to soft pastels through to extraordinarily bold reds and vibrant aqua seas. A truly wondrous outcome from a daring adventure that all commenced with a boy who dared to wonder.

THE FUTURE Two years on the project is still going strong, with both the books and the stunning art prints continuing to sell from the project’s website and future exhibitions planned for Melbourne and Brisbane. The project is also proudly giving back to the community. The day before we met to discuss their adventure the couple had proudly been involved in a ceremony at the new Fiona Stanley Hospital in Perth where a selection of Girt by Sea prints now add some serenity and beauty to the ICU ward - gifted on behalf of the Ciara Glennon Foundation which was sent up in honour of Denis’ daughter who was tragically murdered in the 1990’s . So what’s the next big thing for the intrepid explorers? “We’re thinking a circumnavigation of New Zealand might be next!” Visit www.girtbyseaproject.com to purchase the Girt by Sea book ($99 for standard edition, $299 for signature edition) and superb fine art prints of selected photographs from the project (from $980).

COLOUR

& CURVES

Colour is one of the tools that renowned interior designer Greg Natale uses with absolute mastery, creating striking interiors that are bold, daring and uniquely beautiful. With an inspired palette of pink, yellow, grey and white, combined with fluid shapes and geometric patterns, Natale has added joie de vivre and a gorgeous feminine aesthetic to this Walsh Bay penthouse which recently underwent a complete new fit out, transforming it into a luxurious harbourside haven. Inspired by modern European style, the two-storey, three bedroom penthouse has adopted a new curvy cosmopolitan form. A low level bench and built in fireplace wraps the walls with the new configuration highlighting the lines of the artfully relocated staircase, which better showcases the high ceiling which is created from an overhead void.

Blonde solid oak flooring throughout and brass accents beautifully complement the European furniture and designer décor which has been carefully selected with a focus on fluid lines and rounded edges.

229

Curves and colour flow from the lower level through to the spectacular upper level master-suite which features a lounge area and luxurious open en-suite, defined with a curved bulk head and marble tiled floor. Mosaic finger tiles, brass accents and a free-standing bath installed asymmetrically complete a space that is beautifully balanced and the perfect place to relax and unwind.

Transformation

There is no higher mark of quality service than a returning customer. In the case of this

client, they were so impressed with their experience with Stuart May of Style Kitchens by Design he was called upon, for not just one, but two subsequent projects. In this overhaul of their Norman Park kitchen, butler’s pantry, studio, bathrooms and wardrobes, Stuart teamed up with Oliveaux Interiors, to deliver yet another impressive renovation consistent with the style, finesse and quality that has earnt him many industry accolades.

242

Over his career, Stuart has mastered the art of function and flow. Clearly defining each room with its own unique characteristics, yet unifying it in an inspired continuation of materials and styles. In the kitchen, sleek contemporary walnut cabinetry which continues through to the butler’s pantry, creates a striking contrast to the classic aesthetic of white cabinetry, marble benchtops and brass hardware. Fitted with matt black tapware from RogerSeller and Sub Zero and Gaggenau appliances the kitchen exudes quality and style.

AGED Some like to drink their wine young and fresh, but if you’re one who appreciates wine that has aged gracefully with the additional body and character that only time can add, then you may be considering incorporating a purpose built wine cellar in your new home. More than just a storage solution, a well designed cellar can be an architectural highlight, adding both character and value to your home. Here’s some home cellar inspiration along with tips to ensure your wine develops both the characteristics and the longevity that will have you drinking and enjoying it years from now.

GETTING IT RIGHT As a basic guideline, the cellaring option you choose for your home should recreate similar conditions to those found in the best natural underground cellars. There are five basic factors to consider when deciding how and where to store your wine:

damaging air to “oxidise” wine and cause off-odours. 3. Exposure to UV Light: UV light causes hydrogen sulphide compounds in wine and affects the tannins and the colour of your wine. 4. Environmental Stability: vibrations and movement prematurely deteriorate wine by speeding up chemical

COMMON WINE STORAGE MISTAKES • Near appliances that radiate heat. Heat literally ‘cooks’ wine resulting in unpleasant and “jammy”

flavours. This goes the same for other appliances – e.g. fridges, dishwashers, washing machines and heaters and fireplaces. Even short bursts of intense heat can quickly deteriorate wine. • By windows or doors. Placing cabinets near windows or doors provide exposures to damaging UV light. • Dark areas that fluctuate in temperature. Those who are aware of the above, often choose dark cupboards or perhaps even have a ‘wine cellar’ under the house, however if the climate in this area fluctuates within more than a few degrees your wine will also not keep well. In Australia and particularly areas which can experience very warm summer days and very cool winter days the fluctuation in temperature may be 20 degrees at times.

Mouth filling and fleshy the soft sweet fruit and firm tannins linger on the finish. This very nicely balanced wine will be best enjoyed over the next five years. Recommended to cellar for 4-7 years. The property has since been lovingly restored with no expense spared, bringing to it Karin’s passion for design and art, and transforming the

Carefully selected materials were chosen for their durability and low maintenance as well as their ability to integrate into the landscape. The selection process was meticulous, as the project involved working around a steep site, prone to flooding and landslides, as well as the demands of waterfront locales. Working with light-weight steel framing in the floors, wall and roof structures, this very special property has been designed not only for easy construction in a remote location but for fashionable endurance, no matter what the weather throws at it. Within, the home draws upon the natural surroundings. Paying respect to the bushland, the native Australian flora has been invited into the rooms in the form of exposed timber battens along with an inspired island benchtop made from a tree removed from the site. These additions add warmth to the minimalist open-plan interiors. Every aspect of the home has been designed to maximise living space and serve a purpose, or even two - in the case of the fabulous rear staircase which leads to the waterfront and also doubles as functional outdoor seating. Surrounded by the mature trees and with the stunning waters of the bay lapping at the doorstep, this home is the ideal place to play, rest and reset. When I say I have 6 fairly large scale gardens it seems like I’m lying as only 7 to 8 years ago I had trouble keeping a pot plant alive. From memory I didn’t even own a sprinkler, I had a hose and a spray nozzle but rarely used it.

Classic country-style comfort combines with modern luxury and a touch of the Hamptons in Turrell Building's latest Hunter Valley project. Masterfully designed to take full advantage of the endless natural scenery, the expansive 620sqm home boasts stunning unobstructed views in every direction. Entertainer’s

HEAVEN

With an established home on a large elevated block overlooking Port Philip Bay, the owners of this Mt Martha property were seeking to redefine their outdoor living space. Thanks to the talented team at multi-award winning COS Design, their previously underutilised yard has been transformed into a spectacular, family friendly, entertainers heaven. Re-working existing areas, and tapping into the potential of previously unused spaces, whilst dealing with the challenges of a steep rear slope with an 8.5m drop, difficult access and privacy issues with neighboring properties, COS Design have incorporated a new luxury pool and spa, a fire pit, built-in trampoline, basketball court and gorgeous terraced gardens, all the while ensuring the stunning water vistas have been maximised from every possible angle.

312

313

A series of decked landings and steps lead you from the home through the terraced garden beds to the pool level, then down to the fire pit and garden. Raising the garden beds around the home’s decks removed the requirement for balustrading keeping the pool and ocean vistas clear from obstruction. The pathway and fire pit introduce curves into the design and create a tapestry of form and function from the alfresco decks above. An expertly chosen selection of foliage surrounds the newly structured space whilst tying it to the surrounding natural bushland. The preservation of existing eucalyptus trees and “white space” in the form of lower level lawns give the project dimension and balance of shade and usable space.

314

Without question, the hero of the space is the gorgeous new infinity edge pool with built in spa, flanked by a striking feature wall made from locally sourced stone. Creating privacy from the neighboring property the stone also softens the contemporary pool design and ties the space to the architecture of the home whilst adding to the relaxed coastal aesthetic that the clients desired. Previously disconnected, the rear garden is now a functional extension of the home that meets all the client’s needs and beautifully connects the residence to its stunning coastal location, perfectly framing the priceless bay and bush views beyond. HARMONY

This new Rye home by Smith Builders is a perfect example of how modern architecture can not only adapt to but harness the power of the landscape to create a structure that sits in complete harmony with the natural surroundings. Comprised of a series of timber volumes that respond to the natural bush vegetation, the striking minimalist design complements rather than dominates the undulating site, maintaining spectacular sea views to the south whilst capturing the northerly aspect to ensure the home is energy efficient.

318

Blackbutt timber is the hero of the design, prominent in both the external and internal material selection. Externally the straightgrained, Australian hardwood is paired with greystone and glass. This combination works well to reinforce the structure’s simple lines as well as reflecting the homes natural surroundings, whilst also creating a contemporary structure that is visually striking.

By shaping and channelling the riverbeds leading to a naturally occurring dam, the design takes into consideration the complications of overflow as well as the ability to provide regular irrigation to the gardens.

Framed by a curved white wall on one side and glass on the other, the fluid, organic shape of the swimming pool ensures it is not out of place amongst its tree lined backdrop. The measured inclusion of man-made features such as a firepit and pizza oven is subtle and minimalist so as not to detract from the reposed natural surroundings. The ESTATE

Appropriately named, ‘The Estate’ is a palatial home beautifully designed by Build Prestige Homes and constructed in line with traditional American themes. The distinction between estates, mansions and manors is the size of the landholding, located on 14 acres of picturesque countryside in a private gated community in Brisbane's south, this spectacular residence makes exceptional use of the land, incorporating every luxury amenity you can imagine including a tennis court, resort-style pool, pool house, fire pit, and a self-contained guest house.

Entering via a sweeping driveway the first impression is one of sheer awe at this residence’s grand proportions and classic Hampton / New England style architecture. The timeless design incorporates a range of natural materials including extensive use of limestone, feature stone cladding and clay roof tiles creating a façade that is truly breathtaking. With custom feature columns and a prominent layered profile, the home is an imposing force that masters the surrounding landscape.

334

Careful consideration was given to position the home on the highest vantage point of the property, to ensure it commanded all available views. The most commonly used rooms were built with high-quality timber bi-fold doors and windows, positioned to face the northerly aspect. The well considered orientation and design ensures the home is flooded with natural light as well as offering views of the beautifully landscaped gardens and outdoor entertaining area.

335

Offering more than a home the property’s extensive appointments reflect an enviable luxury resort-style lifestyle that completely negates the need to ‘getaway’.

336

337

Bespoke finishes and custom details are found throughout the entire home from grand communal rooms that include a north-facing sun-room that connects the home to the pool area, and a state of the art home theatre, to private spaces like the stunning master-suite with glamorous bathroom and dressing room. Build Prestige Homes specialises in boutique custom designed and constructed homes. They approach each project with the same passion and expectation as that of their clients aiming to deliver a personalised masterpiece on every occasion.
