South West’s Most Awarded
Perched high on a remote and exposed site in Yallingup, overlooking the spectacular rugged coastline, this pavilion-style home by Tallwood Custom Built Homes was the deserving winner of the 2023 HIA CSR South West Australia Home of the Year. This prestigious accolade added to the over seventy industry awards that Tallwood has received over the past 20 years, awards that have earnt the company a reputation of WA South West’s best builder.
We talked with Tallwood Constructions Director and Master Builder, Alex Campbell about the company’s enduring success.
You’ve been building for 27 years and over that time have received loads of accolades and industry awards, earning you the reputation of the best builder in WA’s south west, what do you attribute your longevity and success to?
Determination and the desire to do the best we can for our clients, suppliers and trades people. Our company philosophy is to ensure every contact with Tallwood is positive.
Building a custom home is often a deeply personal journey for the homeowner. How do you navigate the emotional aspects of this process?
In my experience, the smoothest and most successful builds occur when there is a collaborative approach between the homeowner, architect/designer and builder. This ensures that the client is fully informed through the journey and all parties are part of the same team.
Can you share an instance where a client’s unique request challenged you in unexpected ways, ultimately resulting in an outstanding outcome?
Cantilevered second storey homes always intrigue me. We are fortunate to work with Michael Baldock from Cotan who is an excellent and passionate engineer who assists us make the seemingly impossible possible.
Sustainability is a growing concern for many homeowners. What eco-friendly practices are integrated into your designs?
As a bespoke home builder, the most proactive action we can have to ensure sustainability is to design and construct homes that will be functional and desirable in 100 years. Over the past few years, we have demolished 5 homes built in the last 20 years for our clients. The embedded energy in constructing homes with a short shelf life has to change.
If you could build a dream home for anyone in the world, living or dead, who would it be, and what unique features would you incorporate to reflect their personality or legacy?
My wife and I are currently building our own dream home. This is the first home I have built for myself and is definitely a reflection of our personality and shared experience.
Can you share a memorable anecdote about a client who was initially hesitant about a certain design element but ended up absolutely loving it? What was the turning point in their perspective?
We have been fortunate to work extensively with Dane Richardson, from Dane Design Australia. One project in particularly remains with me. The clients were very conservative and retiring to the country. Dane designed a predominantly concrete ‘berm’ home which was half buried into the natural slope of the land. The home is architecture at it’s best and an example of a client being taken out of their comfort zone with a stunning result.
As a master builder, you’ve likely honed your skills over many years. What’s one lesson you’ve learned throughout your career that has had a profound impact on your approach to building custom homes?
Two simple rules, ‘does it look right?’ and ‘what would do if it was your own home’. And of course, always read the plans and documents!
The journey of building a custom home can be transformative for both the builder and the homeowner. Can you share a personal anecdote about a project that left a lasting impression on you?
The sales process can often feel like speed dating. Clients will often form an opinion on you and your ability in the first meeting. Once they sign the contract, you enter into a relationship that will last the duration of the build and often much longer.
Many of our clients have become dear friends. We have a renovation division which is even more personal as you are entering into the homes where people have celebrated Christmas, Birthdays, the whole spectrum of life’s experiences. We often have to ‘destroy’ their home to in the act of making it beautiful. This process must be completed sensitively and as quickly as possible.
You’ve obviously built a lot of outstanding homes, is there any in particular that stands out as a favourite and why?
The first home that received the SW HIA of the Year. Peter, the client was wonderful. He had parted ways with his architect and really trusted our expertise and opinion.
The home is on the beach front in Old Dunsborough, has stepped first floors with killer views over Geographe Bay.
This unique holiday residence celebrates the natural beauty of the site in more ways than one. It has not only been expertly designed by architect Paul Hoffman to maximise the stunning views of the ocean and surrounding parkland, as well as withstand the harsh coastal conditions, but also utilises a myriad of raw materials including rammed limestone walls using limestone sourced from the site.
With a consistent record in delivering exceptional award-winning homes regardless of site difficulties, Tallwood were the obvious choice to take on this challenging project. The design separates the garage via a covered walkway to the main residence which on entry immediately reveals the spectacular ocean vistas and the true magnificence of the home’s elevated position. The sloping roofline which is raised on the ocean side allows for expansive walls of doubled glazed windows that flood the home with natural light and connect the interior home to the surrounding beauty.
Clean, minimalistic lines allow the breathtaking scenery to take centre stage while extensive use of natural materials that include travertine flooring and of course the rammed limestone walls create an aesthetic that seamlessly merges with the outside coastal scenery.
Award judges commended the quality of build and the level of detailing and finish achieved by Tallwood Custom Built Homes as exceptional, especially given the demanding site and complexity of the construction.
While having a restrained and relaxed vibe the home is not without luxury appointments, including hydronic
underfloor heating and illuminated wine storage that creates a gorgeous feature in the main living space. Outside, there are additional spaces to take in the rugged beauty of the natural surroundings including an expansive covered alfresco area with outdoor kitchen and fireplace and a spectacular firepit with built in seating created from hand laid limestone.
With rainwater harvesting for both potable water and firefighting, PV power and battery storage and a backup generator, the home can also be run completely off-grid. Its not hard to see why judges were impressed by this residence and that Tallwood Custom Built Homes are yet again a deserving winner of this coveted award.

Gerry’s latest venture, Spacio, marks an exciting expansion of his business endeavours. Derived from the Italian word for “space,” Spacio reflects his evolving vision - one that extends beyond lighting to include high end furniture, catering to the commercial, hospitality and residential markets. With this new direction, he merges the artistry of light with the equally essential need for functional, beautifully designed spaces - a combination that has been well received by commercial clients.
Blending Gerry’s commitment to superior quality and craftsmanship with the sophistication of European design, Spacio has curated an exceptional collection of ergonomic, customisable furniture from premium Italian brands such as Las Mobili, Softline, Zilio A&C, and LA.CO. At the heart of Spacio’s philosophy is the idea that a well designed space enhances how people interact with their environment.
As with Mondoluce, Spacio delivers a comprehensive service with an in-house design team that can consult on project requirements, offering a wide array of bespoke finishes and
dimensions. Additionally, Spacio’s unwavering commitment to sustainability prioritises eco-friendly practices, sourcing wood exclusively from sustainable forests and from recycled materials with low VOC emission.

Elevating Your Experience of Home
With Uncompromised Swiss Design
What’s more important to you, how your oven appears, or that it will provide decades of reliable service, creating beautifully cooked meals for your family and guests? Should a washing machine integrate seamlessly into your laundry design or have sustainable features and functionality that make doing the laundry less of a chore? Should an appliance simply look sophisticated, or should it be sophisticated? When you purchase appliances from leading Swiss brand, V-ZUG there is no need to compromise. V-ZUG’s ethos in crafting their luxury appliances is all about fusing style with state-of-the-art innovation and doing so with impeccable artistry to transform daily routines into extraordinary experiences.
It was in building a truly “Swiss” company that V-ZUG found its values in combining sophisticated style with superior quality. Swiss design exudes understatement, discretion, and minimalism, rooted in the Swiss penchant for simplicity and efficiency. When it comes to blending precision and reliability with beautiful design, few countries can rival Switzerland’s storied reputation. This renowned heritage of excellence permeates various facets of Swiss craftsmanship, from Swiss Army Knives right through to the world’s most luxurious timepieces.
A century’s worth of hard work and passion have now taken this small Swiss company from its humble beginnings to a global icon in premium home appliances with more than half of all Swiss households possessing at least one V-ZUG appliance and increased global
market share. As V-ZUG expands its presence in Australia, with the opening of their new Sydney studio in Surry Hills, it remains steadfastly tethered to its Swiss heritage, bringing the best of Swiss craftsmanship and innovation to Australian homes. It is a philosophy that goes beyond mere functionality, distilling the very essence of Swiss living into each and every product. Within the Swiss way of life, there is an understanding that your home should be a place of joy and rest, somewhere to create beautiful memories, and the items you use every day have a role to play in that experience.
That focus goes into every single product that is designed, manufactured, tested, and delivered from the V-ZUG floor. At the heart of this recognition is a commitment to unparalleled quality and innovation. As Martin von Freeden, Head of Design at V-ZUG, puts it: “We fuse precision, quality, usability, and longevity with minimalistic aesthetics, creating timeless elegance.”
While their appearance may be simple and minimalist, V-ZUG’s products are anything but ordinary. Leading the way in innovation, the company pioneered the use of steam in domestic ovens more than 20 years ago. V-ZUG specialists soon realised steams’ broader applications and began integrating this innovative and efficient technology into other appliances. In 2012, they introduced the Steam Finish function in dishwashers, resulting in spotless glasses and gleaming dishes. Steam’s application in washing machines has also been beneficial, reducing ironing time by de-wrinkling clothes.
In 2014, V-ZUG’s innovation in textile care reached new heights with the launch of the RefreshButler. This revolutionary fabric care system combines steam’s many advantages to provide gentle and convenient garment care at home. The RefreshButler neutralises odors, diminishes creases from wear, dries rain-soaked coats and shoes, and effectively eliminates bacteria and other germs, showcasing V-ZUG’s excellence in household technology.
Stand-outs from the V-ZUG lineup.
Steam Ovens
Modern ovens heat the nutritional value and taste right out of our food – often resulting in disappointing meals that take the joy right out of cooking. V-ZUG have pioneered the development of exceptionally precise ovens that enhance the flavor profile of every dish. The quality of their ovens is supported by the endorsement of some of the world’s most renowned chefs.
Dishwashers
V-ZUG’s dishwashers redefine dishwashing efficiency with their unique SteamFinish technology. This feature uses steam to achieve spotless, gleaming dishes and glasses without water spots or streaks. But it’s not just that finish that is innovative, seamless integration into kitchen cabinetry, high quality materials and features such as SoftSlide and SoftClose, plus the convenience
of LED interior lighting put the V-ZUG dishwasher in a class of its own.
Washing Machines
The AdoraWash V4000 and V6000 washing machines showcase V-ZUG’s dedication to superior laundry care, incorporating steam technology to de-wrinkle clothes that reduces the need for ironing and saves precious time. The AdoraWash features an exclusive easy care drum with twice as many holes as conventional wash drums, ensuring the gentlest care for your delicate items and exceptionally thorough rinsing and detergent removal for softer and longer lasting fabrics. The 1600 holes also maximise the efficacy of the detergent reducing environmental impact and spend per wash. The machine also features an Eco Management function that provides real time feedback on energy and water consumption.
Heat Pump Dryers
V-ZUG’s heat pump dryers have an energy rating of 10, however there are not enough stars on the Australian energy rating system to accurately represent just how energy efficient they truly are. The dryers retain heat within a closed drying system, which allows for installation even in the smallest spaces. Both V-ZUG models offer a variety of programs and feature advanced electronic displays. Additionally, their moisture sensors are a significant benefit, detecting when clothes are truly dry and automatically shutting off the appliance to conserve energy.
Refresh Butler
The Refresh Butler brings professional garment care to your home, refreshing even the most delicate garments without the need to take them to the dry cleaners. Epitomising V-ZUG’s dedication to innovative, products
“We fuse precision, quality, usability, and longevity with minimalistic aesthetics, creating timeless elegance.”
Martin von Freeden, Head of Design at V-ZUG
that make life easier, this unique device provides high-tech sanitation, refreshing clothes, textiles and linens without the use of chemicals. A SYMPHONY of Style
Multi-award winning Zorzi has once again set a new standard for luxury living with this stunning Applecross residence. With a brief to create ‘something unique’, the Zorzi design team drew inspiration from several architectural styles including from the American Northeast and England, with elements of Federation, Art Deco, and Raffles influences. The resulting home is a sophisticated symphony of style, exuding timeless elegance whilst at the same time providing a comfortable and functional home fit for a young family.
With a generous building site of nearly 1200sqm, the size and topography lent itself to a sprawling single level design. The picturesque front façade features dark brick with contrasting white timber detailing and a wide verandah that overlooks the landscaped gardens and a stunning mature Jacaranda tree that was a primary consideration in the design of the home. The overall aesthetic is a romantic reminder of yesteryear. An elevation of 3 metres above street level has also allowed for a 5 car undercroft garage.
The unique design of this gorgeous residence features two distinct areas. The front half of the home has a traditional feel in both layout and in details, with an emphasis on symmetry, individual rooms, wide passages with wainscotting and feature arches. At the rear a more modern open-plan layout combines the striking kitchen, dining, lounge and alfresco areas. An internal courtyard ensures that the entire home is flooded with natural light, and being single level, there was scope to incorporate
particularly high ceilings throughout which add to the sense of space and grandeur throughout this gorgeous home.
One of the home’s standout features, is the luxurious kitchen with a striking ‘avocado’ natural stone benchtop sourced from Brazil, adding a touch of exotic flair to the heart of the home.
Positioned at the front of the home, the gorgeous master suite features a gas fireplace and a traditional bay window with built-in window seat - providing the perfect position to enjoy the Jacaranda’s striking show of purple flowers. A gorgeous dressing area incorporates walls of mirror and an abundance of matte black cabinetry, and a luxurious ensuite continues the dramatic black and white theme complete with free-standing bath. Three further bedrooms share a large bathroom with separate powder room and the study has also been cleverly designed to convert to a guest suite thanks to a bed which has been concealed within the cabinetry, and its own ensuite.
Maximising northern exposure, the home’s solar passive design wraps around a large internal courtyard with lush lawn and landscaping ensuring internal areas have an abundance of natural light. At the rear, a stand-alone pool house offers versatile functionalityevolving from a children’s playroom to a games room, gym, or an extension of the alfresco space to suit the changing needs of the occupants.
The exceptional attention to detail and quality craftsmanship that the Zorzi name has been built upon is evident throughout this stunning luxury residence, with unique materials and custom touches that elevate the home’s aesthetic and functional appeal such as custommade timber windows with double glazing, and concealed flyscreens.
Embracing modern conveniences, the home is equipped with advanced smart technology including automated window treatments, keyless security and access and programmable lighting. A Sonos sound system with in-built ceiling speakers enables music to be managed throughout the entire home including the garden where hidden speakers and subwoofers create the perfect atmosphere for poolside gatherings.
Zorzi has crafted a home that is not only visually stunning but also incredibly functional, meeting the evolving needs of a modern family.
LUXURY Beach House
This City Beach residence by Zorzi embodies the essence of a relaxed beachside holiday retreat while the quality of finishes and luxury inclusions found throughout deliver modern family living of the highest calibre.
Designed with a bright and breezy aesthetic, there is an emphasis on light and space throughout the home which starts at the home’s impressive entry. A wall
clad with feature stone adds an organic quality to the home’s contemporary façade and guides guests in through an oversized custom timber door. Double height windows flood the entry foyer with natural light and an overhead void allows for soaring ceilings that add a sense of grandeur. A striking staircase with floating timber treads, recessed step lights, and a custom handrail sets the tone of this impressive residence.
The coastal ambience is reflected in the home’s muted palette of light-coloured timbers, feature stone and warm whites, complemented by pops of dusty blue and aqua in the wet areas. At the heart of the home, the designer kitchen offers uninterrupted ocean views through oversized stacking glass doors which can be fully opened to the alfresco area, blurring the line between interior and exterior spaces. A curved end to the island bench contrasts with the angular lines of the architecture and allows for smooth traffic flow within the open-plan space. An expansive concealed scullery keeps all the clutter hidden from view and a ‘shoppers entry’ from the garage adds additional practicality.
Ideal for family living, this home boasts four living zones that include internal and external living areas on both levels. In fact, the upper floor has been intentionally designed around a very well-proportioned outdoor undercover terrace that captures all the westerly ocean views perfectly, whilst providing complete protection from the elements. Zorzi have delivered a superior home that allows the occupants to take full advantage of their enviable coastal location.
Dalkeith ENTERTAINER

Nedlands NOSTALGIA
When you build your dream home, you have the rare opportunity to weave your personal story into every corner — and that’s exactly what this award-winning Nedlands home achieves.
Expertly constructed by Calautti Homes, who won the 2022 HIA Perth Housing Award for Best Custom Built Home $1.7 - $2.2 Million, and designed by Neil Cownie Architect, this unique residence is more than just a beautiful space; it’s a reflection of a couple’s deep
connection to the site where they ran a fuel station for over 30 years. Every detail has been thoughtfully crafted to pay homage to their past while at the same time embracing the owner’s vision for retirement living. From the nostalgic off-form concrete bearing the old Ampol service station logo, to amber and green coloured windows that represent oil and fuel, to playful wheel-arch curves and a bespoke letterbox perched on a vehicle suspension spring, this home tells the story of their journey in a way only a truly custom-built home can.
The home has been carefully designed and orientated to maximise thermal efficiency with the main living spaces and master suite positioned on the upper level where controlled northern light warms the space during winter and provides elevated district views of the treelined horizon.
Aside from the fuel station references, the home’s architecture also reflects the owners’ Greek heritage, translated in a way that blends beautifully with the local Nedlands aesthetic which has lots of arches. Glazed terracotta roof tiles in pearl white atop white brickwork creates a fresh Greek island feel while window hoods punctuate the exterior, providing shade and adding to the bold architectural look of the home.
Inside, the bespoke features are abundant. Terrazzo tiles, complement the coloured glass windows, adding to the vibrant energy of the home and acoustic board in the bulkhead of the dining and living room helps to enhance both comfort and sound quality.
The house number ‘123’ is crafted in feature steel, creating moving shadows throughout the day, an ever-changing design element that reflects the dynamic nature of the home.
The living areas are further elevated by laser-cut aluminium powder-coated shelving, adding yet another bespoke element to this unique home.
Calautti’s attention to detail is clearly apparent in the exceptional finishes seen throughout this highly specified home.
This award-winning residence is a stunning example of Calautti Homes’ expertise and what building a ‘custom home’ is all about - creating a space that not only meets your needs but is a unique reflection of who you are.

The KIMBERLEY
By Rob Maughan
The evolution of the Kimberley is billions of years old. Man has inhabited the Kimberley for some 65,000 thousand years. My first experience of the Kimberley was as an 8 year old. With an HG Holden Ute and a few basic camping essentials we headed on a north western trip. It was the 70’s and the Kimberley was still very raw, we were farmers from Merredin and life was pretty simple, so an adventure like this was pretty exciting for me. We travelled through the Pilbara, camping along the way. The roads were ROUGH. I remember one day we did 4 tyres which for me as a youngster just added to the adventure. Even as an 8 year old, the Pilbara was beautiful to me.
We finally got to Broome, staying at Cable Beach Caravan Park, I recall watching on in disbelief as the park owner attached his backhoe to a patron’s caravan before dragging it through the park and dumping it out the front of the park because the rent was overdue. If that wasn’t humiliating enough there were 20 kids watching on. Mum loved Broome and Cable Beach, but it was a definitely a
different vibe to the South West. From there we travelled up the Gibb River Road, free camping along the way until finally arriving in Kununurra. It was hot(!) but thankfully there were plenty of swimming holes to cool off in. You really don’t get the beauty of this place until you take a glimpse at your first Kimberley sunset. We worked our way up through the Ord River system, China Wall, Wolfe Creek Crater, Geiki Gorge (now known as Danggu Gorge) and every afternoon like a kind of ritual we would stop to watch the sunset and a mesmerising beauty unfold. As the sun sets the magnificent landscape seems to come alive in a magical, almost surreal kind of way. I didn’t know it then and probably couldn’t have comprehended either, the love I would eventually develop for this very special place on earth.
I didn’t return to the Kimberley until I was 20 years old. I drove into Broome super excited. I was staying at a local backpackers and decided to check out the night life. I went to a club called Swindlers, the beer was cold and
the music was loud. I recall two bouncers, one from Swindlers, the other from the Roebuck Bay Hotel and they had a grudge to settle, toe to toe and it was on, the whole pub erupted into a bar brawl, like something out of Blazing Saddles. The brawl was over in a few minutes, and all the guys were back up at the bar, lips bloodied, eyes blackened, laughing like they were having the time of their lives - I have to confess one of the coolest things I had seen. This was the Kimberelythe people are fantastic, they’re laid back and sincere. They will welcome you into their homes even when they barely know you. It’s an unwritten rule that you help someone in need. That’s Kimberely hospitality. Later, I ended up living in Broome for a couple of years and I continued to return to the Kimberely over the years, often as a judge for the Housing Industry Association. My most epic and memorable trip to the Kimberely however was in 2021 on “A True North Adventure Cruise, Coast and Coral”, taking in the Rowley Shoals and Kimberely.
I remember entering the lagoon of Clerk Reef at the Rowley’s via the main passage (the only channel capable of taking such a massive vessel), the water was the most amazing blues and greens you could imagine and so crystal clear it felt like you could somehow touch the bottom of the ocean. An avid diver in my youth I decided to take the refresher dive inside the lagoon. As I entered the water I was gob smacked by the visibility, 50 meters
at the shoals is common. The colours of the tropical fish are spectacular, giant clams the size of a car bonnet, stunning coral reefs teeming with life. That afternoon we ventured out on a tender boat for a spell of fishing. It wasn’t too long before we caught some sizable fish. We hooked a good-sized Sailfish, it breeched twice running out a large quantity of line. After 20 minutes of tussling with this majestic creature and some life memorable
photographs we released it back to its home. The skipper of the tender Justin had a massive smile on his face while the rest of us had complete looks of disbelief. It was an incredible experience, one I will definitely take to my grave.
The lagoon diving was amazing so for the next couple of days my focus was diving, we dove along massive fault
lines with 50m drop offs, it was exciting and intimidating at the same time. You really didn’t know what you would encounter next, when you looked out into the ocean it was the darkest of dark blue, each time returning to the boat having experienced something new. I have dived in lots of amazing places, all I can say is if you’re a diver and haven’t gotten there, you must include the Rowley Shoals on your bucket list.
From the Rowley’s we steamed overnight until we arrived at the Horizontal Water Falls. We boarded tenders and headed to the falls - a natural phenomenon where the ocean is trapped inside a large area and can’t escape as quick as the tide is dropping or visa versa, which creates a natural waterfall. It doesn’t sound that amazing until you have experience passing through it on a small vessel, it’s quite exhilarating.
We then travelled to Cockatoo Island, Alan & Eileen Bonds resort of the 80’s - quite an amazing place with a lot of history. Once utilised by pearling luggers of the 1800’s, a radar station during WW11 and later Iron Ore mines. Swimming in the waterfall edge pool overlooking the Buccaneer archipelagos with a beer in hand is heaven. Again, steaming overnight, we arrived the following day at Montgomery Reef. Sir David
Attenborough described it as one of the natural wonders of the world - 400 square kilometres of reef that is exposed when the tide is at its lowest, as the tide retracts the reef appears to be lifted out of the water, fish getting trapped in the process giving the opportunity for wildlife including crocodiles to take full advantage. It’s beautiful to take it in via a small vessel and truly unbelievable from the vantage point of the True North helicopter where you can see the water cascading over the entire reef.
There is something quite unique and mystical about this particular part of the Kimberley. The High Cliffy Islands only 1km long and 300 meters wide, were once home to the Yawijibaya people, a physically superior race some as tall as 7ft who lived there for 7,000 years. They suddenly vanished around the 1930’s.
We travelled through the Hunter River, Prince Regent River but my favourite is Porous Creek - a massive gorge carved out by thousands of years of erosion. True North tethered all the tenders together in the late afternoon and it was like a massive light show as the sun set across this ancient place as very 5 minutes the light changed, dramatically effecting the colours around us This was one of the most incredible sunset experiences I have personally encountered, especially with this prehistoric gorge as the backdrop.
Montgomery Reef
I have been around Australia twice, travelled extensively through Europe, the Balkins and parts of the Middle East. I was just recently in Turkey looking at an amazing archaeological site dating back to 3,500 BC - pretty crazy right? Sure the antiquities of the world are spectacular, I wouldn’t explore all these wonderful places if they weren’t, but nothing I’ve seen beats the natural beauty of the Kimberley.
Of all my Kimberley experiences taking it in from the coast aboard True North was without doubt the most incredible. Aside from the breathtaking sites The True North team are based in Broome and that Kimberley hospitality I talked about is their ethos. There is almost one crew member for every two guests and two onboard chefs so they make sure you are really looked after, nothing is too much trouble. I remember I was on board with owner Craig Howson and his family, a lady from the UK wanted to camp out in the wilderness, Craig says no problem, they packed some food, swags and wood into the helicopter and fulfilled her wish without question. As a hardened Aussie adventurer like myself, I took my chances with the onboard bar and aircon.. LOL. To give you an idea how luxurious this vessel is, they have 3 desalination plants creating 1500ltrs of fresh water per hour, no scrimping on 2 minute showers, even the vessel gets a bath every few days. The experience aboard True North is first class in every way with each every day incorporating a new set of excursions keeping the adventure, literally an adventure.
I hope my adventure has inspired you to discover this very special part of the world and don’t forget to mention my name when you call to book your own True North adventure. See you in the Kimberley!
(Oh and if you want to build a custom home I can help you with that too).

Narrow Block WONDER
From the street, this Cottesloe residence presents as a rather unpretentious, architecturally simple abode, but there is a lot more to this unique custom home, built by multi-award winning A. Di Bucci & Son than initially meets the eye.
Firstly, the unassuming façade features handmade Danish bricks. This certainly may not be apparent to the average eye, but to the discerning individual it offers a subtle hint of what the interior may reveal. Situated on a narrow site, the home, designed by Paul Burnham
is effectively only one room wide, but stretches all the way from the street to the rear laneway. At street-end, the front room serves as a family room in daily life with a relaxed and inviting vibe. However, it has two personalities, transforming into a grand entertaining space (complete with concealed wine room and cellar) capable of hosting sophisticated gatherings that can spill out onto the front lawn through dramatic five metre high automatic double glass doors. A sculptural staircase also leads the way to a roof top terrace to enjoy the spectacular west coast sunsets over the ocean.
Contrasting with the earthiness of the brickwork, the upper section of the rear of the home features steel cladding with operable screens that allow light to enter through the north facing windows, while creating privacy from neighbouring properties.
The mid-section of the lower-level houses the open-plan kitchen and dining area. A unique island bench that has been finished with rounded edges and warm timber cladding adds a sculptural element to the space creating am inviting place for guests to enjoy a pre-dinner drink while meals are being prepared.
Opposite, panes of sliding glass open the entire space onto the garden and pool area where an alfresco kitchen that includes an oversized, wood fired oven creates yet another area for family and friends to gather.
This surprising home has a wonderfully unpretentious and inviting feel, perfect for relaxed family living while at the same time incorporating the high quality finishes and features that enable it to transform into a sophisticated space for stylish entertaining.
RISING from the ASHES
In February 2021, the Gidgegannup fires tore through the landscape, leaving devastation in their wake. Tragically, many families faced the heartbreaking loss of their homes. For one family, the only surviving remnant of their original house was the suspended concrete floor slab. Today, that home has been rebuilt thanks to award-winning A. Di Bucci & Son who constructed the home on the surviving concrete slab.
The owner’s decision to do so was as much an emotional one as it was practical, building on a connection to the past, a memory of what once was. At the 2024 Master Builders Association WA Housing Excellence Awards, the home was awarded Best Contract Home $800k - $1mil providing the owners a wonderful home that now looks toward the future.
The new residence is a double brick and metal roofed structure which has been built with fire resistant materials throughout. The exterior of the home features tumbled reclaimed-look brick that adds to the home’s rustic aesthetic which harmonises beautifully with the surrounding bushland.
With the elderly client’s special needs in mind, the 2 bedroom 2 bathroom layout has been designed for
comfort and accessibility. Despite being compact, the low-maintenance interior has a wonderful sense of spaciousness and a strong connection to the outdoors, thanks to the open-plan design and floor to ceiling glass windows that take in the leafy outlook in all directions.
One of the most beautiful features of this country abode is the wide verandah that encircles the home providing both shade and an additional layer of defense against
future fire threats. It offers the perfect place to enjoy lazy afternoons with a book whilst soaking in the stunning native Australian landscape and breathing the clean, country air.
This Gidegannup home is more than just a place to live, it’s a symbol of resilience, a space that honours the past and embraces the future. Rebuilt with love, care and the exceptional quality that A. Di Bucci & Son are renowned for.

COTTESLOE Transformation
Situated on a commanding site just 500 meters from Cottesloe Beach, with expansive Indian Ocean views, this home underwent an incredible transformation to create a home that is now fitting of its prestigious address. Working closely with the owners, Collière Architecture re-imagined and redesigned the home to create a stylish contemporary residence that would meet the needs of the growing family.
The outcome resulted in multiple accolades for the project including the 2023 Master Builders Association award for Best Alteration & Additions, and Best Alterations and Additions Over $1million.
Originally two 1970’s beach houses that had been joined to form a single residence some time in the 2000’s, the home had both structural and waterproofing issues. Consulting engineers found severe water ingress and concrete slab deterioration and advised that the existing slabs had reached the end of their lifespan and needed replacement. Faced with council height restrictions for single houses in areas coded less than R40,
Collière Architecture, in collaboration with Structural Engineers Wallbridge Gilbert Aztec (WGA), designed a cantilevered structural steel roof frame and column system. This innovative approach allowed the home’s floorspace to be maximised within the building constraints, resulting in an increase to the internal living space of 100m². The completed luxury residence now boasts an expansive 600m² of internal living, 312m² of external living and a 100m² alfresco area that provides sweeping coastal views.
The interior design by Collière Architecture required a combination of sophistication and elegance intertwined with a relaxed beach vibe fitting of the home’s coastal location. Director John Collière and Associate Director Philip Geraghty worked closely with the clients to achieve the perfect balance and an ambiance of relaxed luxury. The neutral palette incorporates a considered selection of premium quality materials, including extensive use of natural stone, and accents of timber which add an organic quality that perfectly complements the ocean outlook.
Designed to last a lifetime, the transformed home incorporates advanced passive and active shading systems, insulated floor slabs, walls, and ceilings, and double-glazed windows throughout. Outdoor living is enhanced by a full-width bi-folding wall of glass, merging the interior and exterior spaces as well as an operable louvre system, providing all year round comfort. Sun glare is easily managed by automated blinds and curtains while a state of the art Wi-Fi lighting controller and a lift enhance convenience across the three main levels.
Collière Architecture specialises in luxury homes, apartments resorts, mixed use development, adaptive reuse and heritage projects.

Perth’s Mt Lawley is famous for its tree lined avenues and grand heritage style residences, so building a new abode that is almost entirely unrecognisable amongst the historic local architecture is a rare achievement to say the least. And yet, this is exactly what homeowners Kath and Peter Soumanis have accomplished - their gorgeous new home integrates so harmoniously within the streetscape that it could easily be mistaken for one of the suburb’s original 100 year old beauties that has only been possible due to the expertise of master craftsman like Kim Fitzpatrick from Tradition Stained Glass who designed the many windows that feature extensively throughout the property and were integral to creating the home’s classic heritage character.
Having previously built a home, Kath was no stranger to the process and with a clear vision for their new residence she took the project on herself, carefully selecting tradespeople and artisans based on their skill and expertise in their respective fields. As a third generation glass artist, and with a reputation of having designed some of Perth’s most beautiful leadlight windows including exquisite entry doors that were recently installed at Parliament House, Kath entrusted Kim with the design process. The property’s charm begins at the front door, where Kim’s intricate leadlight creations immediately grab your attention and connect the property to Mt Lawley’s architectural legacy.
Each of the beautiful, hand-crafted glass windows found throughout this impressive residence was personally designed by Kim, reflecting the style of an earlier era, perfectly accompanying the myriad of other heritage features that include 4 metre high coffered ceilings, wainscotting, arched doorways, intricate mouldings and more. A sophisticated neutral palette of jarrah floorboards stained a rich chocolate brown and stark white walls highlight the exceptional finishes and architectural details that can be found at every turn.
One of the home’s standout features is without doubt the living space which features a traditional style fireplace, complemented by gorgeous Art Deco style windows by Tradition Stained Glass which have been symmetrically positioned on either side creating a stunning effect. A spectacular dome above pays homage to the grandeur of traditional homes and draws the eye upwards, anchoring the space within the modern open-plan kitchen, dining and living area.
In this Mt Lawley home, Kath and Peter have achieved something truly special - a place where the past and present coexist harmoniously, a result that could not be achieved without the exquisite craftsmanship of the team involved.
TSG provide a complete project management service for clients, including arranging new joinery for doors, sash windows and casements, right through to installation and painting services utilising highly skilled trades that have worked with the company for many years. Their one-stop-shop process makes creating a unique statement piece for your home simple and easy.

French Provincial
DREAM KITCHEN
Having purchased a classic, French Provincial style home a few years back, the owners of this Ardross residence Sue and Ron, wanted to update the kitchen to something more luxurious and reflective of their discerning taste.
Seeking an authentic French Provincial style design and superior quality finish, they conversed with several Perth kitchen designers, but it wasn’t until they spoke with Dino from Arcaro Exclusive Kitchens that they felt they’d found a cabinetmaker who truly understood their vision. “We wanted to work directly with the craftsman and not with a company that contracted out their work. Dino immediately instilled us with confidence that he had both the expertise and experience to create the high spec kitchen we were looking for,” said Ron.
Dino’s professional guidance and recommendations for the cabinetry colour palette and material selections such as the striking granite that has been used on benchtops and splashbacks were welcomed by the couple who decided on an off white for perimeter and wall cabinets and contrasting, deep blue island bench. Throughout the process the level of service experienced was impeccable. Cabinets were completed at the Arcaro workshop by Dino and his Senior master craftsman Will Ford, the clients were invited to come view them to ensure they were very happy with the outcome before any installation took place.
In traditional style, the exceptional craftsmanship is clearly evident throughout the gorgeous space. The kitchen features intricate individually designed fluted pilaster mouldings, door profiles and decorative kick board with imported corbels. The cabinets themselves have been exquisitely crafted so they are more like luxury pieces of furniture than kitchen cupboards.
Hanging above the polished granite island bench is a brass Darlana lantern style pendant which completes the look, complementing the luxurious aged brass cabinetry hardware.
Quality finishes include Integrated lighting in glass cabinets and beneath cabinetry also ensures the space is beautifully lit, top of the range V-ZUG appliances, a Billi tap for filtered and aerated water complements the Turner Hastings fireclay farmhouse butler sink and traditional tapware.
Sue and Ron couldn’t be happier with the result, praising Arcaro Exclusive Kitchens for delivering a Rolls-Royce level of service. They describe it as a pleasure to work with a true artisan and professional—someone who not only takes immense pride in his craftsmanship but also provides unmatched after-sales service.

Harmonising Your Home for WELLNESS
In today’s fast paced world, the concept of home has evolved into more than just a place lay your hat. This is it’s become our own private sanctuary - a place of retreat and rejuvenation. With increasing awareness of the importance of health and well being, we are increasingly seeking ways to transform their living spaces into environments that nourish the body, mind, and spirit. Creating a home that supports wellness
involves thoughtful design choices and the integration of elements that promote a balanced and tranquil atmosphere. From the materials you choose to the ambiance you create, each decision plays a crucial role in enhancing your home’s ability to support a healthy lifestyle. Below are some things you may wish to consider in order to create a home that nurtures you and your family’s physical and emotional well being.
It All Starts With Energy - Feng Shui
The foundation of a wellness focused home begins with considered design, and Feng Shui takes this to a level above just creating a functional floor plan. The ancient Chinese practice of Feng Shui focuses on harmonising the energy, or “chi,” within a space to promote balance, health, and prosperity. It involves things such as the orientation of the home on the land, placement of doorways and windows and considered placement of furniture, the use of natural elements, and attention to the flow of energy within each room. By aligning the layout and design with the principles of Feng Shui, homeowners can create spaces that promote balance, peace and harmony.
Western Australian Feng Shui consultant Fran Maunton of Feng Shui Fortunes began studying Feng Shui over 20 years ago after Feng Shui assisted to overcome struggles she was experiencing in her life at the time. It then became a passion, and she gained accreditation through the Singapore Feng Shui Centre shortly thereafter. Her mission now is to empower & guide families, friends & communities to discover more meaningful connections to their space, their health, wealth & happiness.
Some common mistakes people make in Feng Shui are:
1. Confusing Good Interior Design with Good Feng Shui
Many people mistakenly believe that a stylish interior design or a well chosen colour scheme automatically means good Feng Shui, however Feng Shui is more about energy flow and balance that décor.
2. Placing the Kitchen, Staircase, or Toilet at the Centre of the Home
A floorplan with areas like the kitchen, staircase, or bathroom in the centre of the house can disrupt energy flow. The centre of the home should remain open and balanced to allow for good energy circulation.
3. Doors with Conflicting Angles for the View
Often doors are placed to capture a scenic view, but if these doors face different angles that conflict with the main entrance, it can create disharmony in the flow of energy through the home.
4. Misalignment of the Main Entrance and Internal Doors
If the main entrance or internal access doors are not optimally aligned, it can cause energy to move awkwardly through the home, leading to discomfort or instability. Proper alignment ensures smooth and harmonious energy flow.
5. Misunderstanding the Alignment of the Front and Back Doors
Some people assume that having the front door aligned with the back door is always bad Feng Shui. While it can be problematic in certain cases (causing energy to rush through the home too quickly), in some situations, this alignment can be beneficial depending on the doors’ location.

Toxin Free Window Treatments
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are not only present in paint but can also be found in various window treatments, such as synthetic fabrics, adhesives, and finishes, creating exposure to toxic chemicals and potential health risks.
Knowing that around 30% of a home’s heating and cooling is lost through windows, the team at Vision Decor have always promoted choices that improve thermal efficiency within their client’s home leading to increased comfort for the occupants. But their passion for health and sustainability does not end there, they have a range of recycled fabrics made from plastic bottles.
Vision Décor also offers an extensive range of natural, non-toxic materials that are Oeko-Tex certified and have undergone testing to ensure they are free of harmful substances which make them much safer for you, your family and the environment.

Sleep on Organic Bedding
The importance of a good night’s sleep in your overall health cannot be overstated, and your bedding plays a significant role in the quality of your rest. Choosing organic bedding made from natural fibres like organic cotton and organic linen ensures that you are sleeping on materials free from toxic chemicals and pesticides. Organic bedding is not only softer and more breathable but also supports sustainable practices, making it a key element in a wellness-focused home.

No VOC Paint
Plants, Plants and More Plants
Abundant indoor plants and greenery are on trend and also a wonderful way to boost your health. A study by NASA in the 80’s proved that plants can filter benzene, formaldehyde, and trichloroethylene from the air, leading to cleaner indoor air and reduced respiratory issues. They also promote a peaceful environment, naturally reducing stress and anxiety, lower blood pressure and elevate mood. A visually striking way to incorporate plants into your home is via a vertical garden. O2 Plantwalls specialise in creating impactful vertical gardens that are not only visually appealing but also contribute to a healthy, sustainable and eco-friendly environment.

Many conventional paints contain harmful chemicals known as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are released into the air as the paint dries. These toxins can contribute to indoor air pollution, causing headaches, respiratory issues, and long-term health problems with prolonged exposure. Choosing paints labelled as “No VOC” or “Low VOC” significantly reduces or eliminates these harmful emissions. No VOC paints release little to no toxic fumes, making them a much healthier option for both the environment and your living space, while Low VOC paints limit the amount of pollutants, offering a safer alternative without sacrificing performance.
Resene is known for its innovative, eco-friendly formulations, offering a wide range of vibrant, durable colours with low or no VOC paint options for healthier indoor environments.

PARADISE My Stay in
Editor’s Review
There’s nothing quite like waking up to the sound of the ocean, especially when you’re in a tropical paradise with palm trees swaying outside your window. It truly feels like you’ve found a slice of heaven on earth - and that’s exactly the experience I had at Ombak Luwung Beachfront Estate in Canggu when I stayed there in June.
We arrived in the evening and were warmly welcomed by the wonderful staff, who greeted us as soon as our car pulled up. Just like a luxury resort, we were guided down a beautifully lit garden pathway to the expansive living pavilion, where we were served welcome drinks and caught our first breathtaking glimpse of this paradise. Words and photos simply don’t do Ombak Luwung justice, it’s far more glorious in person. Being such a short distance, us Perthites are regular travelers to Bali and over the years I’ve stayed in some pretty special places, but Ombak Luwung really is next level. Due to the unbelievable growth over the last ten years, there are few private estates remaining of this size in the main tourist hubs of Bali and those on the oceanfront can be counted on one hand – that alone puts Ombak Luwung in a class of its own, but that’s certainly not all this stunning property has to offer.
Set on an acre of lush tropical gardens, the estate has individual pavilions for each of the four luxury bedroom suites - all of which are beautifully decorated with a collection of authentic Balinese antiques and art. The suites are positioned around a central open-plan living space that looks out over the impressive 17m pool, manicured lawns and the ocean beyond. Our group of 8 found there was plenty of space to spread out, and if we wanted (we didn’t!) we could have gone the entire stay without crossing paths - it’s that spacious. If I’d known how perfect the grounds were for an event or small wedding, I might have been tempted to solicit a last minute proposal haha.
I had the pleasure of staying in one of the two oceanfront pavilions each of which are beautifully appointed with huge beds, writing desks, dressing rooms and ensuites, but one of the outstanding features of this property is the spectacular ensuite bathroom in my pavilion which was accessed via a small bridge over a magnificent koi pond that encircled the entire bathroom – very regal! Experiencing the many features of this estate it’s not surprising to hear that architect Bill Bensley - who is known for some of the world’s most stunning resorts, and top Balinese architect Popo Dane were responsible for Ombak Luwung’s extraordinary design.
And if that’s not enough to impress you, the location really is unbeatable. COASTAL Garden
Perth’s premier landscape designer, Tim Davies Landscaping, has transformed the outdoor spaces of a newly constructed home in City Beach into a cohesive, functional, and visually stunning garden. The challenge was to create a luxurious garden within the relatively tight garden area available. TDL executed the brief masterfully, crafting a landscape design that harmoniously complements the contemporary architecture of the home while fulfilling the client’s specific needs.
The front garden, which constitutes the bulk of the property’s green space, was designed to make a striking first impression. Trees and accent planting were strategically positioned alongside the driveway to provide vertical scale and enhance the home’s expansive façade. The entrance pathway, leading from the gatehouse to the front door, guides visitors through a lush, inviting environment. Feature planting and screens along the boundary wall add softness and a touch of privacy from neighbouring properties.
To ground the home in its natural surroundings, climbing and cascading plants were utilised at every opportunity. A circular feature leading to the home’s entrance frames the garden, creating a striking focal point. However, the true star of the show is the Buxus ball garden nestled in a bed of ‘Cousin It’ – which adds an enchanting and magical quality to the space.
In the pool courtyard and the compact rear garden, carefully chosen plants soften and green the space,
turning it into a serene oasis without sacrificing functionality. A pathway along the northern side of the house connects the pool courtyard to the front balcony, with planting that offers visual interest both inside and out.
The BBQ and fire pit areas were designed with surrounding planting to ensure privacy and enhance the cozy yet sophisticated atmosphere, creating spaces perfect for both intimate family gatherings and elegant outdoor entertaining.
As Perth’s most awarded landscaper and with over 40 years’ experience, Tim Davies Landscaping stands at the pinnacle of Perth’s landscaping industry. Specialising in the design and construction of gardens of all styles and complexities they have earned an enduring reputation for excellence. Whether working on new builds or established gardens, they collaborate closely with clients to bring their dream landscapes to life. Tropical Transformation
This newly purchased East Fremantle residence, was transformed into a lush tropical retreat by the innovative team at O2 Plantwalls, demonstrating how thoughtful design can overcome spatial constraints to deliver a stunning, verdant oasis.
The client’s brief was clear; create a tropical resort-style abode, reminiscent of their previous home in Cairns. The challenge however was that the home - built in the early 2000’s, was constructed on a narrow site with very little available garden space, requiring both ingenuity in design and expert execution. O2 worked hand-in-hand with the clients to ensure that every aspect of the home’s makeover aligned with their vision. A fresh colour palette and materials were selected to create an atmosphere that emphasised natural elements while reflecting modern sophistication. The entire pool area was revitalised - decking was replaced with a low-maintenance composite board in a muted grey tone and the original pool tiles were replaced by 100 x 100 mm Bali stone tiles, adding to the rich green tropical ambiance.
The pièce de résistance of the transformation is without doubt the extraordinary 15 meter by 1.6 meter high plantwall. This stunning living wall presented a challenge in itself; how to create a lush, tropical environment in an area where the harsh Western Australian sun beats down directly overhead during the summer months. O2’s solution was a masterclass in botanical design. They selected sun-tolerant species like Tree Ferns (Cyathea), Frangipani, and Philodendron to create a canopy, providing essential shade for the more delicate tropical plants and ferns that thrive in the understorey.
O2’s commitment to long-term sustainability and ease of maintenance is evident in the plantwall’s design. To address the challenge of accessing the wall, which is positioned directly above the pool, O2 engineered a removable scaffold system. This discreet setup can be quickly assembled when maintenance is required, ensuring the plantwall remains lush and vibrant without disrupting the overall aesthetic. Watering and irrigation are seamlessly integrated into the design, with the plantwall capturing and recirculating water from hidden holding
tanks located beneath the decking. The irrigation system, easily accessible via a discreet manhole, ensures that the plantwall remains healthy and thriving all year round, regardless of the season.
What began as a simple idea to “green up the grey” of a rendered wall has blossomed into a breathtaking feature that defines the entire property. This entire project is a testament to what can be achieved when creative vision meets technical expertise.

Enhancing Your Space with TREES
The importance of trees cannot be overstated and extends far beyond their aesthetic value, they are indispensable to our planet and play a critical role in maintaining ecological balance, supporting biodiversity and enhancing human well-being. As we face the challenges of climate change, deforestation and urbanisation, it’s crucial to recognise the vital role that trees play in our everyday lives and the many reasons for incorporating them into your landscape.
If you’re lucky you have some trees left on the land you’re building on, but if you don’t, Ellenby Tree Farm is the place to go. With over 40 years of expertise in tree cultivation and propagation, Ellenby have an extensive stock list of mature trees and decades of experience supplying leading landscapers, developers and home owners all over the country.
Ellenby Tree Farm was founded by horticulturists Dave and Sue Woodroffe who were frustrated by the poor quality and immature tree selection available from most nurseries. Today the company has been passed down to sons Craig, Ric and Shane who grew up in the business and experienced their childhood absorbing their parents vast knowledge of horticulture, picking up more than a few things along the way. Over the years the company has built a reputation for excellence in tree cultivation. The focus is on growing and nurturing trees to an advanced size and maturity to ensure they are genetically resilient before sale and installation – maximising survival rate and enabling property owners to enhance new builds with beautiful mature trees.
With the myriad of ways that trees enhance your living environment and add value to your property, it’s important to work with experts you can trust to provide professional advice and superior quality stock when purchasing trees for your property.
Hardy Trees with Architectural Superiority
Pioneering a unique approach, 80% of Ellenby’s trees are grown from inhouse propagation resulting in superior root health and hardiness which establish much quicker after planting since their root systems are more substantial. They have gone through years of careful structural pruning, creating aesthetically pleasing shapes with balanced canopies making them architecturally superior to trees from other growers, with taller heights and fuller branching - some over 15 metres tall which create an immediate impact to the environment.
Through a collaborative consultation process, Ellenby’s tree experts work closely with clients to understand their unique needs and priorities, providing sciencebacked recommendations on tree species that meet their requirements. With their depth of knowledge and experience the team takes into account the intended purpose, such as shade, ornamental beauty, or privacy screening, which determines the most appropriate size, growth habit, and other traits of the chosen tree. They also consider the mature size of the tree, ensuring enough space is allowed for its eventual height and
spread. The growth rate of the tree is also important, as it impacts how quickly the tree fulfills its intended purpose, taking into consideration that fast-growing trees require more frequent pruning.
Additionally, their team considers the soil and drainage patterns of the property, as they significantly influence the tree’s health, they’ll select trees suited for the site’s soil to ensure the best chance of thriving. They also consider the climate, including cold hardiness, heat tolerance, and precipitation needs, to guide the selection of appropriate tree species for the local climate.
Aesthetics are important as the tree’s visual characteristics like flowering, fall colour, bark texture, and form/shape add ornamental value, and should match the setting of the landscape and the style of the home. Maintenance needs are also considered, as some trees are high maintenance while others require minimal care once established and should match the client’s expectations and resources.
