VOLARE
Visionnaire, led by CEO and co-founder Leo Cavalli, presents their ambitious project, VOLARE, a luxury villa in Dubai that encapsulates the essence of imagination and visionary thinking. The name Volare, borrowed from the renowned song by Modugno, symbolises the act of soaring above to gain a broader perspective, nurturing visions, and embracing a creative mindset. The project represents an unparalleled endeavour within the industry, embodying the innovative design approach that defines Visionnaire.
Throughout its 18-year evolution, Visionnaire has remained committed to innovation and a deep appreciation for the essence of each location. The company’s unique language unifies diverse materials and design elements that had previously not been combined in a single product or setting. Leo Cavalli acknowledges the influence of their clients in driving the brand’s growth, expanding from kitchens to bathrooms, outdoor furnishings, and now evolving into architecture, delivering a coherent storytelling experience that allows a home to fully embody their owners’ personalities.
Conceived in collaboration with renowned designer Alessandro La Spada, Volare will grace the shores of the Bulgari Compound in Dubai, encompassing an impressive 2000 square meters. Scheduled for completion in 2024, the villa promises to be an iconic structure that captivates with its striking aesthetic. The seamless integration of exterior materials and colours continues within, establishing a harmonious language that respectfully embraces the ‘genius loci’. This groundbreaking approach sets a new benchmark in the realm of luxury real estate.
Volare, as a residential concept, exemplifies Visionnaire’s dedication to portraying a genuine philosophy of living inspired by the Japanese term “yugen”. This aesthetic experience captures beauty that is subtly suggested rather than overtly displayed, requiring attentive contemplation and sensitivity to fully appreciate. Volare serves as a manifesto for the contemporary home, embracing the idea that a project’s container should be shaped by its content, reflecting the emotions of its inhabitants rather than solely adhering to architectural functions.
The Volare project thrives on meticulous attention to detail, extending even to the creation of a distinctive olfactory identity for the spaces. Visionnaire, in collaboration with Antonella Bondi, has crafted an exclusive fragrance specifically for this project, conducting extensive research into the identities of places, objects, and materials. This olfactory element adds an immersive sensory dimension
to the overall experience. Volare by Visionnaire is poised to redefine luxury living, transcending conventional boundaries to create a harmonious blend of design, emotion, and sensory engagement.

FLOORING by Artisans
Meticulously hand-crafted by artisans, the process of creating Mardegan Legno’s timber flooring is the work of many hands, each plank individually treated by master craftsman to create their exquisite range of bespoke flooring, resulting in a finish that adds luxury and character to every project.
Staircase installed by award winning Insight Flooring
Any premium product naturally starts with superior quality materials which is why Mardegan Legno utilise ‘Noble wood’, in the creation of their flooring, a term that refers to Slavonian and Hungarian Oaks. More than just a term describing the established trees, Slavonian and Hungarian varieties gained notoriety due to their connections with European nobility. The legacy of the wood goes as far back as 450 years, prior to Napoleon sourcing the wood to build his notorious naval fleet.
The product undergoes extensive cultivation, harvesting and treatment to achieve the inspired results seen in their range. Each stage is fuelled by a deep respect for the ancient, artisanal art of woodworking, passing knowledge
and appreciation for timber’s natural beauty down through the generations and employing traditional techniques and values to the crafting process.
Giuseppe Mardegan has tirelessly researched and developed a passion for colour, and the broad spectrum of tones available in their extensive range is just one factor that makes Mardegan Legno flooring stand above the rest. Each shade results from superimposing different nuances and strategic layering of the brush, spray or ragged-on application, this ensures of quality, consistency and uniqueness that cannot be replicated by any machine.
Mardegan Legno is renowned for unique designs and unmatched quality –designed to last not just one but many lifetimes. Each floor created has a unique colour, finish and design that tells the story of the noble oak and the ancient forest it grew and its evolution to reflect the home that it serves.
In this Rose Bay project, a moody ambiance has been achieved in the home’s contemporary interior with sandblasted Slovanian Oak in ‘West Side’, beautifully complementing the luxurious kitchen’s cabinetry and creating contrast with the white walls to define spaces. Engineered into several complex designs like the elliptical staircase, the continuation of the flooring creates unity and balance throughout the home as well as adding a rich warmth to the interiors.

MODERN PALAZZO
A spectacular fusion of classic & modern design, this glamorous East Brisbane home combines the visionary style of Greg Natale with the meticulous craftsmanship of CHS Building to create a luxurious residence that’s been dubbed the ‘Gucci Mansion’.
Renowned Australian designer Greg Natale mesmerises us yet again with his luxury design of this three storey, five bedroom home on the Brisbane River. Drawing inspiration from his Italian heritage and the owners’ deep connection to Italy, Natale embraces a modern palazzo theme in celebration of the clients’ passion for art and all things Italian. The exterior design, which incorporated a row of arches, set the stage for an interior that celebrates the beauty and elegance of this classic architectural element.
In response to the owners’ request for a predominantly dark palette, Natale masterfully employs luxurious Nero Marquina marble floors, featuring striking black expanses or geometric patterns paired with white marble. Arches grace the hallways, walls, doors, windows, and shelving, creating a harmonious flow and accentuating the graceful silhouette of bold furnishings. This layered approach, combining classic influences with contemporary luxury, combines to create the home’s sumptuous aesthetic.
The grandeur of the staircase takes center stage, as colossal black slabs of marble evoke the spirit of grand Italian spaces whilst arches unfold above in all their magnificence, painted in gray velvety stucco, directing attention to their classical lines and providing tantalizing glimpses of adjoining rooms. A contemporary pendant light descending through the staircase’s void adds to the brass accents that are found throughout the residence.
Personal paintings and collected artworks adorn the walls, enhanced by a mix of vintage and contemporary European furniture and an array of patterned wallpaper treatments, which inject rich bursts of color. Delicate finger tiles crafted from brass elegantly trace the curves of the arches, infusing the house with a luminous quality that beautifully offsets the darker tones and accentuates the visual transitions between spaces and materials.
In the kitchen, rich velvet stools highlight the gold threads of the stunning Paonazzetto marble benchtop and bookmatched splashback
The arches, ever-present in the design narrative, resume their tale within the stunning master-suite. From the curved bedhead in a rich velvet that echoes the russet tones of the cranes in the Gucci wallpaper, to the recessed shelves, steel-framed windows, and doorways leading to the adjacent ensuite, arches imbue the space with a sense of fluidity.
A backdrop of gray fabric wallpaper adds texture, providing a perfect canvas for the gray marble bath and black vanities. Brass accents, found in the arched mirrors, intricate details, and delicate finger tiles, enhance the curvaceous forms, transforming these rooms into an enchanting symphony of graceful glamour.
BUSH BEACH Meets
Bush meets beach in this striking contemporary residence by multiaward-winning Hedger Constructions. Built to respond to its stunning location in Anglesea situated between Victoria’s spectacular Great Ocean Road, Bass Strait to the south and Great Otway Park to the west, the home has been expertly constructed with a sustainable approach to modern family living.
The owner’s brief was for an impressive yet functional family home that incorporated natural, low maintenance materials that would endure the demanding conditions of the Australian coast. Based on simplicity and balance, architect Martin Rubenstein of Format Architects has designed a contemporary home that whilst being visually evocative in shape, sits in complete harmony with its idyllic surroundings.
With a unique, curved façade, the home features an expansive upper-level terrace that cantilevers out over the home’s entry, taking in the stunning ocean vistas. A rammed earth wall guides visitors up the floating concrete stairs to the home’s impressive entry, which is via an oversized pivoting, Spotted Gum door. The rammed earth, concrete and spotted gum, which have been used extensively in the home’s construction were all chosen for their ability to weather well and the organic quality of each of the materials allows the home to blend beautifully with the surrounding natural environment.
The home is constructed largely of rammed earth, which is a combination of sand, gravel, silt and a small amount of clay. This material has been the foundation of some of the world’s oldest structures, and while most stick framed homes are given an estimated lifespan of 49 years, a rammed-earth home can maintain its integrity for over 1000 years. Rammed earth was the ideal choice given its durability, superior thermal and noise cancelling properties and propensity to deter common pests like termites that can plague Australian homes.
Pared back, but highly detailed, the interior incorporates highly complex artisan elements such as bespoke concrete benchtops and hard plaster render to wet areas. Subtle plays on texture and matt and gloss finishes add visual interest to what is a cohesive design approach which includes, American Oak custom joinery and engineered flooring, and brushed gold tapware and accessories throughout the 4 bedroom, 4 bathroom home.
Concealing the plumbing, roofing, downpipes and wall capping and finishing the exterior in a polished render has added to the home’s striking visual appeal.
Feature timber to the façade, complements timber batten privacy screening each in spotted gum chosen for its ability to age well and connect the home to the surrounds.
The inspired floorplan has answered the client’s brief for a home that would accommodate their large extended family during peak holiday periods, incorporating areas to come together as a family as well as spaces to retreat to in solitude, whilst maintaining an airy and open feel throughout the entire home. Emphasising the connection to nature and bringing the outdoors in, the central courtyard ensures that natural light can penetrate all areas of the home - even during winter, reducing energy consumption and further adding to the sustainable qualities of this stylish home.
With the quality of both the chosen materials and the craftsmanship that comes with every Hedger Constructions’ home this property is destined to become a constant, overlooking the ever-changing coastal landscape.

But despite the obstacles, Gremmo’s expert team have delivered an expansive, highly functional, multi-level family home that has been skilfully designed with a myriad of sustainable and energy efficient features that make it 85% self-sufficient in overall power consumption.
From street level, the size of the home is not clearly apparent, the striking façade however, which has been beautifully combined with limestone paving, charred timber cladding and lower and upper level plantings that soften the angular lines of the contemporary design, ensure the home sits beautifully within the coastal environment, whilst being a stand out amongst neighbouring properties.
Sleek and stylish, the upper-level living area and designer kitchen features clean simple lines and a monochromatic palette that allows the sweeping ocean vistas to take centre stage. Through sliding glass doors, the interior can be seamlessly opened up to the cantilevered terrace which includes an outdoor kitchen. This creates an expansive space to entertain in style whilst enjoying the ocean breezes and incredible views that extend out across the beach and waves during the day and to the Sydney city lights at night.
The airy coastal aesthetic is beautifully represented in the home’s luxurious master suite which has no internal doors. Featuring honed marble tiles, a stone bath and feature timber cladding to ceiling and cabinetry, the space has a calm and relaxed feeling of understated luxury, offering a private sanctuary to retreat to in peace.
On the lower level of the home, a number of inclusions ensure the teenage occupants have plenty of space of their own to enjoy, including a soundproof music hub at basement level that allows anyone inclined to do so to crank up the music and jam to their heart’s content without disturbing the peace.
Lush tropical landscaping surrounding a sparkling below ground pool with gorgeous jade coloured mosaic tiles, and a cabana with built in seating and downlights ensure the backyard oasis can be enjoyed both day and night.
The quality of craftsmanship and finishes found throughout this home are reflective of Gremmo’s multiaward winning style, and ensure this home will provide luxurious family living well into the future.

Situated on a generous site boasting a 30m river frontage onto an open canal, the home incorporates over 890sqm of luxury living which has been cleverly designed to take full advantage of the surrounds and maximise the breathtaking water views out to the Gold Coast city skyline.
For the homeowners’, the primary objectives were to create a space where their children could visit for years to come that would evoke the ambiance of a luxury hotel. The inspired U-shaped floorplan allows residents to enjoy panoramic river and Gold Coast skyline views from all angles of the home, placing emphasis on connection between interior and exterior living spaces, whilst the exquisite material selection and finishes well and truly fulfil the homeowners desire for a luxurious hotel experience within their own home.
In the kitchen, scalloped (reverse flute) cabinetry, mimics the rolling water of the river and ocean surrounding the home as a reference to the stunning coastal location, complement by a custom designed and fabricated curved brass rangehood, custom brass tapware and brass details on the curved legs of the island bench, adding refined elegance and a touch of glamour to the open plan living space.
Creating a stunning focal-point at the centre of the home, visible from both the rear and front of the property through expansive panes of glass, is a striking sculptural staircase with Marquina black marble treads. Above the staircase, a 4m wide skylight adds even more wow factor to this spectacular architectural feature which also ensures the home is flooded with natural light.
Marble has been used extensively in all the bathrooms including custom Cianna grey marble tiles on the floors and walls and Marquina black marble highlighting the shower areas.
Incorporating 6 bedrooms, 7.5 bathrooms and multiple communal spaces, this luxurious modern residence easily accommodates family gatherings whilst ensuring everyone can also retreat in privacy. LUXURY Sustainable
This contemporary harbourfront home by Mardini Constructions stands as a testament to the multi-award-winning builder’s reputation for delivering exceptional results with difficult and complex projects. Situated on a steep sloping site in Henley, overlooking Wallumatta Bay and the Parramatta River, the existing 3 bedroom home was completely demolished. The site then underwent extensive excavation to accommodate the new 5 bedroom contemporary residence which magnificently combines luxury family living with sustainable design.
Mardini Constructions worked closely with the client and architects on the home’s design which was commenced by Algorry Zappia & Associates and further refined by Designcorp Architects. The brief called for a high calibre home of robust construction that would suit both the demands of family living and its waterfront location and construction consequently embraced a myriad of durable, low maintenance materials, including exposed concrete, recycled hardwoods, cedar, sandstone and marble. At the property’s entry, walls created from bricks that were cleaned and repurposed from the original home, a fence made from sandstone excavated from the site, and recycled hardwood timber on the front façade demonstrates the commitment to sustainability that is evident in every aspect of this unique project.
Entering the home, an overhead void floods the area with natural light through double height glazing and a spectacular exposed concrete staircase that was constructed insitu by Mardini, creates a dramatic focal point and emphasises the exceptional craftsmanship and meticulous attention to detail found throughout this sophisticated modern residence.
The refined minimalist interiors enhance connection to the exterior through extensive glazing which allows the stunning water views to become a backdrop for luxury living. The double-glazed low-E glass windows also ensure of optimal thermal performance without compromising on aesthetics. Cross-air ventilation was also a major consideration in the design, encouraging natural airflow, resulting in a comfortable and ecofriendly living environment. A thermal rating exceeding R3.5 for the roof area, along with custom LED lighting and hydronic floor heating, further bolsters the home’s energy efficiency and an array of 18 solar panels harnesses renewable energy, significantly reducing the property’s carbon footprint. To top it all off, a substantial 12,000 litre rainwater tank ensures a responsible and sustainable water supply. An unwavering commitment to the project also saw the implementation of additional thermal initiatives by the Mardini team resulting in the home well surpassing the nominated thermal performance rating and Basix requirements.
This outstanding project serves as an inspiration to the industry as a whole, reminding us that true luxury lies not just in opulence, but in the artful fusion of aesthetics, functionality and environmental responsibility.

OasisURBAN
Winner of the Design Matters National 2022 Building Design Awards for Best New Home $2m -$3m, this home by Nagy Design goes beyond aesthetics and functionality, embodying the essence of sustainability, accessibility and inclusivity.
Designed to accommodate the unique needs of a family with children who required special considerations for their physical and health needs, the clients presented a challenging brief for their new residence, requesting a large family home that would adhere to universal access principles, and include features such as a lift for mobility and an indoor hydrotherapy pool. Nagy Design responded to the brief beautifully, with modern, urban
oasis, that provides space for the family to both come together and enjoy time apart.
Striking in design, the home’s highly articulated façade features tilted, chamfered Alucabond framing around full-height glazed windows, bluestone was used to ground the structure, creating a home of architectural interest, without dominating the streetscape.
Extensive use of glass is a major contributing factor to the overall success of this project creating an architectural ‘lightness’ that mitigates the home’s impressive 550m2 size. The resulting ‘transparency’ seamlessly connects interior and exterior spaces allowing children to be easily monitored as they play. Glass also played a crucial role in integrating the pool enclosure, allowing the pool’s water feature to become a focal point inside the home.
Engineered oak flooring throughout adds warmth and a feeling of relaxed luxury to the home’s interior. Generously proportioned spaces provide ample room for the children to run around, including five bedrooms, five bathrooms, a study, a rumpus room, and a gymnasium. A standout feature of the home is the upstairs gallery with oversized picture window that has become a favourite room for the owners.
Through creative design, the home has also achieved optimal energy efficiency, taking advantage of the northern aspect at the property’s rear, whilst a central void draws light deep into the home’s interior. Clerestory windows in the living room also allow morning light to filter in without distracting from TV viewing. The home also features double glazed windows throughout, a 20,000 litre underground water harvesting tank and an 8 kw solar system.
Nagy Design’s attention to detail and innovative approach is evident throughout this exceptional home. See more at www.nagydesign.com.au

Winner COASTAL
For Queensland custom builders J & B Projects, the completion of this contemporary luxury residence overlooking the pristine waters at NSW’s Cabarita Beach came with its fair share of obstacles. The project commenced with some challenging excavation due to the enviable cliff-side location being essentially a giant rock. Then came covid border closures which created considerable difficulties due to 90% of their trades living in Queensland. Despite the issues, J & B pushed through finalising a spectacular coastal residence that saw it awarded a 2022 Master Builders NSW 'Excellence in Housing' award for Best Contract Home in its category.
Designed to take advantage of the spectacular ocean outlook and maximise natural ventilation and lighting, the three level home features fixed open glazed systems on all sides of the building, enhancing the connection to the stunning natural surroundings. Utilising low maintenance materials that can withstand harsh coastal conditions, the precise angular lines of the home create a striking contemporary façade that combines concrete with timber-look aluminum screening, blending harmoniously with the coastal surrounds.
Built over three levels that includes a rooftop deck with entertaining pavilion, the home features 4 bedrooms each with its own ensuite – the master also with a steam room, a games room, large open plan living, dining and kitchen and a 3 car garage. A material palette that includes extensive use of natural stone and timber bring the organic quality of the surrounding environment into the home’s interior creating spaces that are warm and inviting despite the concrete shell.
Considerable emphasis has also been placed on sustainability. The thermal qualities of the concrete structure already reducing energy consumption, enhanced by an 8kw solar system that powers the entire building, including hot water and pool heating. Water usage is also minimised thanks to a 10kL in-ground tank that services the gardens irrigation needs and all tapware and toilets are 5-star rated. The outcome is a gorgeous sustainable worthy of both its award and its idyllic location.

CHRISTOPHER BOOTS
Established in Melbourne on 11-11-11, The Christopher Boots Studio has since gained a global following for their spectacular sculptural lighting that explores the interplay between nature, architecture, symbology and geology. Boots’ love for the physical and metaphysical qualities of quartz crystal has seen it feature extensively throughout the collection and resulted in the stunning pieces being playfully referred to as ‘jewels’ for the home.
Originally designed exclusively for the Hermès holiday vitrines in New York, the latest show-stopping addition to the collection is Wings of Pegasus that reflects the mystical qualities of the mythical creature and the dazzling brilliance of the constellation.
Wings of Pegasus
Despite the international acclaim and demand for their work, every work is still handmade in the Melbourne studio with love and dedication by the Christopher Boots team of talented artisans. URBAN RETREAT
Setting their eyes on this home’s sculptural façade, any onlooker on the street would be naturally curious as to how the interior of this unique contemporary home plays out. Drawing inspiration from its coastal location in bayside Brighton, Melbourne’s Seidler Group have created a modern luxury residence that responds to the client’s desire for an urban retreat where boundaries between built environment and the natural surrounding are blurred whilst simultaneously creating a secluded private sanctuary in which to escape to for rest and play.
Concrete, embossed with the texture of reclaimed wood, and black timber cladding, forms the shell of the home, supporting a skin of perforated aluminium panels and operable timber louvres, creating a visually striking combination of textures and tones that harmonise beautifully with the coastal surrounds. In addition to the aesthetic value, the design represents innovation excellence in terms of energy efficiency and sustainability. Concrete panels provide superior insulation whilst glass and timber louvres regulate light, reducing the need for mechanical heating and cooling. A central courtyard also acts as a gateway, inviting prevailing breezes to permeate the home through operable windows facilitating the extraction of heat from the ground floor.
Designed for a family of entertainers, the brief for the interior was ‘bold, theatrical and dramatic’. Working closely with interior designers Golden, the client’s vision has been brought to life in a rich sensory experience of relaxed luxury. The communal areas on the lower floor combine French oak flooring, black timber clad walls and concrete surfaces creating a cool urban vibe that has been embellished with sumptuous furnishings and accents of gold and exquisite feature marble.
Engaging the principals of solar passive design, the functional floorplan that includes both open and intimate spaces was developed with consideration of light movement throughout the day. Housing, four luxurious bedrooms each with their own ensuite and sundeck, the upper level was also intentionally positioned to provide shade over the west facing glazing on the floor below.
With client’s that love to entertain, a highly functional floorplan ensures the home is adaptable to all occasions. Seamless transitions from the interior to outdoor entertaining areas that include custom built outdoor fireplace, alfresco dining areas and a sparkling below ground pool allow the home to be fully opened for large gatherings. For more intimate soirees there is the luxurious subterranean bar with feature window into the pool that has a glamourous retro feel.
Despite the generous proportions of this sophisticated urban residence, an inspired design and material palette ensures the ambiance is warm and inviting throughout and that this home will become a timeless contemporary classic.

CONTEMPORARY Coastal
Bulit over four impressive levels, this spectacular architectural home in Brighton-Le-Sands by Phase Projects has been skilfully designed and constructed to take full advantage of its enviable waterfront location. The design maximises the stunning ocean views, whilst special construction techniques and carefully chosen materials ensure that the home has been built to withstand the challenges posed by its coastal setting, creating a home of the highest calibre.
With striking angular lines, contrasting tones and a custom over-sized entry door, the home’s facade is already quite a traffic stopper - add to that a glass windowed roof-top pool and its immediately apparent that this is no ordinary residence designed by Resolut Group. Walking into the entry foyer, the wow factor continues with soaring ceilings revealing the glass bottomed pool on the fourth level. This allows light filtered in through the blue of the water to illuminate the space. A spectacular sculptural staircase with glass balustrading and contemporary chandelier also adds to the home’s dramatic entry.
The sleek minimalist aesthetic flows through to the spacious open-plan living area on the lower level that features sliding walls of glass, seamlessly connecting the interior to the exterior living spaces.
A continuation of the polished natural stone flooring enhances the connection creating expansive spaces for entertaining guests in style by the home’s second pool that wraps the corners of the home.
The neutral palette of luxurious materials and bespoke finishes found throughout, speaks to the superior quality of this stunning modern residence designed by Resolut Group. Marble, which features prominently in the home, has been used to spectacular effect on the kitchen’s curvaceous island bench - the soft grey and gold veins beautifully complementing the tones of the custom oak joinery. Energy efficient considerations and the integration of smart home technology throughout the whole house enhances the home’s comfort and efficiency, allowing residents to control lighting, climate, security, entertainment and more from a hand-held device.
On the upper level, four bedrooms each with their own ensuite, include the sumptuous master-suite that offers panoramic ocean views - not just from the bedroom but also from the free-standing bath, inviting you to relax and unwind whilst taking in the serene water outlook. The home also features a state-of-the-art home theatre, complete with acoustic treatments to enhance the overall cinematic experience, a gym with sauna and of course the spectacular roof-top pool which provides the ultimate space to truly immerse yourself in the stunning coastal location.
Through the use of carefully considered materials, quality craftsmanship and exceptional attention to detail Phase Projects have created a luxurious coastal home beautifully integrating contemporary architecture with the surrounding environment.

In explaining the collection at the old castlemaine gaol there’s only one main word that fully explains it
That is OBSESSION
YUGE used the word LOVE , love of art , love of collecting
Between obsession and love has resulted in this collection
Paralel to these words to describe the mood behind collecting
There’s numerous reasons for collecting … for me it is as said , obsession
After many years of not being able to find a direction , for my life , for my work / purposeful life I was very fortunate that after too many lost years I discovered art
I was about 23 and apart from surfing and fortunately growing my wellbeing after many years of self destructive behaviour , which sent me further into an abyss
I looked at two or three ways to improve my life
All were basically about finding a passion and a career
This actually became my job … looking for a job
When I was 14 I wanted to be a signwriter and became one at 15
Unfortunately I messed that up and through a winding road at about 19 I completely messed up my life and headed further into being lost in just about anyway possible
I had always hoped that I could lead a fulfilling life and feel that there was meaning in my personal and work life
Ideally blending both

Bill Henson is a visionary explorer of twilight zones, between nature and civilization, youth and adulthood, male and female. His photographs are painterly tableaux that continue the traditions of romantic literature and painting. Hensons elegant, formal photographs of battered landscapes and fragile, wispy youths resemble nothing so much as Flemish still-lifes; rarely has colour photography captured so profoundly the furry texture of night time.

When I discovered pottery in the latter months of 24 , this led me to an interest in just about every aspect of creativity
I potted and painted everyday and every night with only surfing and Homelife distracting what was otherwise a rejoicing in finding an approach to life in art that completely saved me and helped me build a future Previous to this my knowledge of most things was very limited , but the fun of this was , every book I read , especially books and creative souls , opened up a world to me that was just so fantastical that it became second nature to seek out every book , biography and image I could from the world of art , craft , music , fashion , design , architecture etc I then found my collecting addiction
Brett Whiteley is one of Australia’s most celebrated artists. He won the Art Gallery of NSW Archibald, Wynne and Sulman prizes several times, and his artistic career was bolstered by his celebrity status in Australia and overseas. He worked across painting, sculpture and the graphic arts, and is best known for his sensual and lyrical paintings of interiors, nudes and harbour scenes.
Born in Sydney, Whiteley was sent to boarding school in Bathurst in 1948. Returning to Sydney in 1956, he started working as a commercial artist in the studio of the Lintas Advertising Agency in Sydney, began life-drawing classes at the Julian Ashton Art School and occasionally joined John Santry’s sketch club, through which he came to know the Australian landscape painter Lloyd Rees, who was a strong influence. On weekends Whiteley painted around the New South Wales country towns of Bathurst, Hill End and Sofala, producing works such as Sofala 1958. In 1959 he was awarded the Italian Government Travelling Art Scholarship, which was judged by Australian artist Russell Drysdale at the Art Gallery of NSW. Whiteley remained in Europe for the next decade, exhibiting his work regularly in group exhibitions in London, Paris, Amsterdam and Berlin and establishing an international reputation. He also spent time in the USA – staying at New York’s Chelsea Hotel, where he associated with counter-culture celebrities such as musicians Janis Joplin and Bob Dylan – and in Fiji.
Back in Sydney at the end of
1969, Whiteley moved to Lavender Bay and became involved in the Yellow House artists’ collective in Kings Cross. His work became highly desired by collectors, especially his large-scale, brilliantly-coloured interiors and landscapes strongly influenced by French artist Henri Matisse – such as Big Orange Sunset 1974 and Self Portrait in the studio 1976. In 1976 he won both the Archibald Prize for portraiture and the Sulman Prize for genre painting and, the following year, the Wynne Prize for landscape. He won all three prizes in 1978 (the first artist to do so) and the Wynne a third time in 1984. In 1991 he was awarded an Order of Australia.
Whiteley’s art was intimately connected to his tumultuous, creative life. From the late 1970s, his self-portraits – such as Art, Life and the Other Thing 1978 – began to trace his heroin addiction, which increasingly impacted his life and career. Whiteley died of a methadone overdose in Thirroul on the New South Wales south coast in 1992. His last studio and home in Sydney’s Surry Hills is now a museum managed by the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

Starting with people I met through working in the pottery and meeting artists , going to fairs , galleries and every unique store in every town I drove through
When younger and rudderless and so poor I had no money to bey things so I was a beachcomber searching for driftwood and stunning things washed up on the beach and at every trash and treasure market I went too all the way back to the beach when I couldn’t afford art materials I would look on the beach for bits of broken weathered plastic for colour and objects for collage
Sharp was born in Bellevue Hill, New South Wales in 1942, and educated at Cranbrook private school, where one of his teachers was the artist Justin O’Brien. In 1960, Sharp enrolled at the National Art School at East Sydney. He was one of the editors of Oz, an Australia/ UK alternative/underground satire magazine published from 1963 to 1973 and associated with the international counterculture of that era.
Sharp was called Australia’s foremost pop artist. He wrote the lyrics of the Cream song “Tales of Brave Ulysses,” and created the cover art for Cream’s Disraeli Gears and Wheels of Fire albums. He designed at least two posters for Australia’s premier contemporary circus, Circus Oz, including the ‘World-famous’/’Non-Stop Energy’ design. Sharp’s involvement with the restoration of Luna Park in the 1970s proved a bittersweet experience.
In 1979, as pressure mounted to redevelop the prime harbourside site, a fire in the Luna Park Ghost Train claimed seven lives, including a father and his two sons. The fire was a turning point in Sharp’s life; like many others he firmly believed that it was a deliberate act of terrorism aimed at destroying the park and making the site available for redevelopment. In a 2010 interview on the ABC Radio National program The Spirit of Things, he revealed that the fire and the circumstances surrounding it had exerted a profound effect on his spiritual outlook.
Then moving to a kiln under the house and I threw on the potters wheel daily
As my contacts grew and a small career in art and design began to grow I took the opportunity to collect from what was in my midst
I also grew my love for furniture and objects and would hunt through every market and out of the way stores , old railways yards , foundries etc to find diverse and wonderful things
Regarded as Australia’s leading sculptor, Robert Klippel consistently developed a distinct personal language of sculptural forms over his long career. Approaching the surface of each work as a logical expression of it’s interior structure and processes, his ambition was to make sculpture inspired by a poetic synthesis between the twin energies – organic and mechanical – that he saw as defining life and culture in the 20th century.
For the last three decades of his life, Klippel worked out of separate studio-rooms in his harbourside home in the suburb of Birchgrove, engaging in the different activities of drawing, collage, welding, woodwork, clay modeling and plastic assemblage that responded to the creative principles he had established decades earlier.
To make a living I made art and bought restored and sold furniture with a constancy of keeping as much of what I found and only selling things when I needed too , which was way too often and I remember things I have sold to get by and cringe that I had let it go when time going past showed me just how rare that thing was

Returning to Australia in 1929, he held his first show at the Macquarie Gallery. Two years later, he began to teach full-time at the East Sydney Technical College (later the National Art School). He was the head teacher of painting from 1938 to 1960, and head of the school until 1965. Married to the painter Dorothy Thornhill, Dundas is particularly known for his views of the streets of inner Sydney – Paddington, Darlinghurst, Rose Bay - rendered in a Modernist style. He also painted the Canberra landscape, and a number of selfportraits.

Calder is widely regarded as the artist who made sculpture move, forging a practice in dialogue with the world in motion and the motion in things. His radical and pioneering methods of making art – understood both technically and conceptually – changed the course of modern art.
Alexander Calder: Radical Inventor introduces audiences to the full breadth of Calder’s influential career as an inventor of new artistic forms. The exhibition provides a rich overview of Calder’s extensive oeuvre, including his explorative twodimensional studies of line and space, his three-dimensional wire portraits and circus figures, as well as his most acclaimed artistic inventions, the mobile and the stabile.
“[One cannot see, or even conceive of a thing from all possible points of view, simultaneously....
To finish the work [one must approximate.”
Alexander Calder is best known for his hanging mobiles. Born into a family of artists, Calder committed to a career in art in his mid-20s and traveled frequently in the subsequent years between New York and Paris, where he befriended members of the international avant-garde.
Calder’s interest in movement appeared early in his figurative wire sculptures, which have a mechanical sensibility. In 1931 Calder gave form to an entirely new type of abstract art: the mobile. Some of these objects operated with motors, but his real breakthrough came with his creation of hanging mobiles. They consist of abstract shapes connected by wires and move freely with the air currents in a room.
In addition to his mobiles and stabiles, or stationary objects, Calder worked across many media, including painting, jewelry, drawing, printmaking, textiles, and domestic objects, and he undertook commissions for large-scale public artworks around the world.
The collection , obsession , love and desire for things grew until it would make a sort of mad , challenging and constantly wearying adventure to secure a building to turn into a vessel to house this collection

Cherry Hood is best known for winning the Archibald Prize in 2002.
Prior to that win and a fresh graduate of Sydney College of the Arts in 1999 and 2000 she’d had two exhibitions of her huge face paintings at the very edgy, Mori Gallery in the Haymarket. She came to critical acclaim in Australia and these two shows brought attention to her work from New York where a story and image appeared in the NY Interview Magazine. She was soon directing the hang of a new series of paintings at Dietch Projects in SoHo! Followed up by shows in LA and San Francisco. Toronto and Vancouver were next.

Hood’s work has been collected by many important Australian institutions and cooperations, including the Art Gallery of NSW, National Gallery of Australia, National Portrait Gallery, Artbank, Art Gallery of South Australia, Tweed Regional Gallery, Gold Coast Art Gallery, Queensland University Gallery and several regional art galleries
Many purchases are from friends or acquaintances and many were us searching and hunting and seeking out treasures The words to go with the collectables , artists , designers are relative to our approach to most things.
Grant Featherston
Grant Featherston stands at the pinnacle of Australian design. His forward thinking organic style makes his designs some of the most sought after today.
Grant Featherston was a pioneer of uniquely Australasian design Straight out of WW2 he designed his iconic ‘Countour’ series. This was a set of organically sculpted ply chairs, plushly upholstered. Featherston was no copycat; nothing like this had been seen in Australia before. They remain some of the most sought after mid century design pieces out there.
There’s plenty we know about what we do and even more a lack of knowledge , yet driven by obsession and passion and love we have accumulated this body of work and spent years combining the collection and the gaol

A reclusive artist, Zinsky was born and brought up in the UK but now lives in Barcelona. Spending time in a city famous for its architecture, art and culture has had a profound impact on his work, and he has absorbed influences and ideas from his surroundings.
Zinsky’s remarkable portraits capture the essence of his subject in a way that sets his work apart from that of his contemporaries. In a world where the art of the icon is in such great demand, he brings something new and exciting to this hugely popular genre.
A definite non-conformist, it is the art of the streets and the bohemian fringes that he admires
Zinsky is pretty much married to his artwork
Zinsky was born and bred in the UK, however has since moved to Barcelona. And anyone who’s ever visited the Catalan capital knows that it’s a veritable hotbed of art, culture and architectural delights there to be soaked up, and it’s evident that Zinsky has immersed himself fully in his new surroundings.
Datsun Tran is an Australian multidisciplinary artist. His work primarily features the natural world, though it is about us, the human story. His work has explored themes of conflict and utopia, childhood and the relationship between different cultures. The subject matter is often filtered through the lens of what we have in common, rather than what separates us. Datsun has exhibited extensively in Australia, as well as North America, Asia and Europe. He has had over 25 solo and group shows, exhibited in over 30 art fairs, and has been a finalist in over 35 art prizes.
here is our first attempt to put together a catchment of the collection and bits about the people behind the art and some explanations about the pieces housed in the gaol

EDGECLIFF Eclectic
With a foundation built on the experience of Swedish artisan John Fredriksson who brought his trade, philosophy and expertise to Australia in 1986, Antique Floors have consistently delivered some of Sydney’s most beautiful floors. Limited only by the level of creative expression clients allow, each luxurious floor is lovingly constructed to become a feature of the home, built to last generations and age gracefully with the home. Antique Floors’ bespoke flooring was the timeless aesthetic, Mr D. Lonsdale – owner of this eclectic Edgecliff home, considered the perfect complement to his extensive art collection and curated interiors.
How did you decide on the flooring you chose?
I have always admired the Italians and French for their ability to create modern interiors within ancient buildings, and these buildings quite often have beautiful French oak parquet floors. The architecture of my apartment, although new, provided an opportunity to partly replicate this ambience through parquet and panelling and remote-controlled wideslat timber Venetians that disappear into the ceiling when raised. So, I wanted French oak parquet, the pattern I chose is called Versailles.
What do you feel the flooring brings to the home?
The flooring is the anchor to the apartment’s design. It was what I first decided upon, and subsequently, everything else was designed after that to complement the floor. For this reason, there are no floor rugs and the furniture ‘floats’ so that the long sections of the parquet flow uninterrupted, thereby providing a sensation of greater length and of greater
size. Antique Floors decided to start laying the parquet from the North-West corner of the living room, and, as a result, the hallway has an interesting and quite unexpected angular visual impact.
How was your experience with Antique Floors?
Antique Floors stood out miles above its competitors. They have an exceptionally large showroom where the floor is made from samples of the many types of timber flooring they make and install, not just samples on boards on wall racks. Martin was as informed as possible about what I may have wanted and how it could look. My experience with everyone at Antique Floors was one of dealing with only talented, dedicated and professional people, plus the installers and floor-finisher were absolute craftspeople who love their work, which is what has ensured of the exceptional end result that has been achieved.

STELLA TALEB
When you meet Stella Taleb you instantly get a sense of her natural joie de vivre that translates into all of her luxurious renovation and interior design projects. Meeting Stella for the first time is a little like catching up with a childhood friend. Her warm approachable manner and genuine interest immediately puts you at ease which makes it easy to understand why the demand for the Persian/Norwegian Sydney based designer has skyrocketed since setting up her Alexandria showroom.
We met over a glass of wine to learn a little bit more about the self-confessed perfectionist who started her first design studio in Oslo over 20 years ago.
Interview by Kristi Welyk
What was your a-ha moment when you realised you wanted to be a designer?
That is a really good question, but I guess there was no actual a-ha moment for me as it all happened very naturally since I grew up in a family of developers and Architects. My Grandfather was a developer, and my two uncles were Architects; I remember being a curious six-year old who would spend hours standing in the doorway of my uncles’ home office mesmerised by their tilted desks, architectural drawing kits and the rolled floorplans next to their desks. It was my most favourite
thing to do when visiting my grandparents’ home. Being the first grandchild of the entire family I had the privilege of being spoiled with extra attention. I remember my uncles being so kind as to take their time explaining the sketches and teaching me how to draw floor plans.
I guess my passion for interior architecture and design was shaped quite early on. Even today, I can still remember all the fine details of that room, the aroma of their stationery and the delicate way the light coming through the window would hit their desk.
How would you describe your style?
I love all colours, shades and patterns, and I find beauty and uniqueness in any style. I guess that makes my work very interesting as each project differs
from the others. Working with different clients and unique tastes, the challenge and excitement are always at their peak to deliver something truly exquisite on every project. Personally however, interior style from the late 60’s -70’s has captivated my heart. Being born in the 70s, I just love the colours, circle shapes and soft edges that were used back then. This is a style which is now back on trend with a twist of modernity, which I absolutely love.
Is there an interior that has really left a lasting impression on you? (Not your own work)
Again as a six year-old child, I remember visiting the private residence of Shams Pahlavi, the older sister of the last King of Iran, i.e. Shah (Mohammad Reza Pahlavi).
The unique architecture of this residence was mindblowing. With all the rooms, pool and the fixtures
designed in a circular shape, even the furniture had all soft edges. It was a typical contemporary style house which has made such a huge impression on me. I remember sitting in the ballroom on a round velvet ottoman with a huge shaggy rug under my feet which covered the entire room, looking around, grasping and memorising every single detail of the room while trying to pose for my mom’s camera to capture the moment. Unfortunately, that picture was lost throughout the years from moving between so many countries.
Walking through the residence, each room was in a different colour which for me as a child was so fascinating and captivating. The use of different textile, textures and the brass details was just dazzling. Definitely, something that has left a footprint on my work. Later I found out that the residence is called “The Pearl Palace”, also known as “Shams Palace”, which without a doubt, lives up to its name. It was designed by William Wesley Peters who was an apprentice to and the son-inlaw of Frank Lloyd-Wright.
If you get a chance, do Google it there is a great article about “The Pearl Palace” by “Yomadic” which is worth reading. Unfortunately, the Palace has not been looked after and has deteriorated immensely and is now abandoned since the invasion of Iran by the Islamic Republic in 1979, but even from the dated photos, you can get a sense of its former glory.
This residence definitely captured my heart and mind as a child. A place I tend to recall and refer to from time to time, and who knows, maybe one day I will have the honour to help renovate it.
What do you love most about your work?
The best part of my work is connecting with my clients. Working with different personalities and striving to deliver their dream interior is what I find most exciting.
Designing someone’s home is one of the most personal connections you can build with a client. You learn their daily habits and their way of living, and depending on the project, I sometimes get to spend 6-12 months with them, which in many cases has turned into wonderful friendships. Through the years, I have sat with so many families, and each one has their own unique way of using their home. I just love that.
Have you ever had any really unusual or difficult client requests?
Haven’t we all… :)) But again, referring to my previous answer, it just gives me a new challenge to overcome.
I believe learning and connecting with my clients is the first step to creating a unique design for that specific client, and once the connection is established, it is easier to navigate through the project.
Is there any Australian building / interior that you feel you’d desperately like to makeover?
Australia is a relatively new country, and most buildings are well maintained. Still, there are a few buildings which
The Pearl Palace
Strickland House
could use that touch of love and care. One specific building I would love to renovate is “Strickland House” behind Milk Beach in Vaucluse. It is situated on one of Sydney’s most prime locations with the most magical view. It is heritage listed and owned by the New South Wales Government and very unfortunate that it is not getting the attention it deserves. I would gladly volunteer to help makeover this house, as something beautiful as this building should be well maintained and cherished.
Do you have a favourite room that you like to design – eg; kitchen / bathroom / bedrooms etc? And why?
Not really, as all rooms are unique and important, but I would say maybe the kitchen and living room would stand out just a little more, as these two are, after all, the heart and soul of the house.
Where do you see your brand in 5 years?
Hmmm… I love this question, as I love dreaming, planning and executing. In 5 years, I see myself on the French Riviera - the plan is to establish a Stella Taleb Design branch in the south of France and I also see myself purchasing, renovating and flipping run-down properties. I will always have my ties to Green & Gold Australia, as this is my forever home. However, having the opportunity to experience living in that part of the planet has always been on my bucket list. I am also working on Stella Taleb Home, which offers clients exclusive bespoke furniture and soft furnishings designed by me. I have already started this from our current studio, and hopefully, by next year, I will have a showroom dedicated to only that.

HOMEYEAR of the
Tucked away in the breathtaking beauty of Tinderbox, Tasmania, a contemporary passive solar residence stands as a testament to luxury residential construction. This spectacular home captured the attention of judges at the esteemed HIA-CSR Australian Housing Awards, earning the property by Lane Group Constructions the prestigious title of the 2023 Australian Home of the Year. The judges were captivated by its single-level design, anchored by heavyset stone pavilions that blend harmoniously with the windswept bushland. Designed by Studio Ilk Architecture & Interiors, this luxury abode has redefined Australian coastal living while blending harmoniously with the rugged cliff-side location.
Perched on a challenging south-facing site, the architects faced the challenging task of designing a residence that would incorporate thermal efficiency, water views from every room and the grandeur desired by the owners. Embracing the surrounding natural beauty, the long and low structure hugs the cliff, featuring glass walls that capture breathtaking vistas while maximising solar gain. Successfully overcoming local council opposition, for the expansive residence the has been built on one level extending across the cliff face, providing a unique and protected vantage point under the towering white gum trees.
Masterfully constructed to withstand the test of time, the home beautifully combines materials that merge the organic with the opulent. Stone and timber exteriors seamlessly transition to the interior, contributing to both thermal efficiency and acoustic harmony within the home. THE FUTURE A Home For
There are many reasons why people choose to renovate rather than relocate or build a new home. One of those is simply because they love where they live. Perhaps it’s an ideal location, or maybe it’s the sentimental attachment to family moments shared within, regardless, engaging a company to work on your beloved home, comes with a significant amount of trust. Requiring additional space, a more functional layout and update of the interiors, the owners of this Aspley property, entrusted the vision for their home to Brisbane’s Style Kitchens by Design. The outcome is a luxurious modern Italian style interior that connects the home to the client’s past and future.
This glamorous new kitchen is without doubt, the highlight of the project. The expansive space features endless storage positioned around an island bench and a built-in dining table. They have been finished with a gleaming natural marble stone benchtop and engineered stone has been chosen for the workbench and around the splashback . Balancing the glamour of the brass detailing and luxurious European appliances, that include Billi tap and V-ZUG induction cooktop and ovens, feature stone cladding has been used on the base of the island bench and a wall of timber veneer cabinetry add an organic quality and inviting warmth to the heart of the home.
A window splash back and row of skylights ensure the area is flooded in natural light.
Assisting the client to better understand how they were using their home and create a more functional floorplan, significant structural work was required to create both the additional space and the new layout. In the area adjoining the kitchen, innovative storage solutions were created to add functionality to awkward spaces and the addition of a fireplace in stone clad wall, creates a cozy ambiance whilst beautifully tying the space to the kitchen area through cohesiveness in design.
The laundry has been fitted with sleek new cabinetry, Miele appliances and engineered stone surfaces. A complete metamorphosis has occurred in the main bathroom and in the master suite. The entry to the ensuite was moved and the space reconfigured to incorporate new built in wardrobes and a larger, more luxurious space with natural stone benchtops.
Brisbane’s finest, Style Kitchens by Design have an exceptional reputation for delivering outstanding projects, bringing new life and energy to existing homes. Contrary to what their name suggests, the specialist team, led by Designer and Master Craftsman Stuart May, do considerably more than just kitchens, having made a natural progression to full home renovations where consistency in design and quality of craftsmanship is ensured throughout the project.

DREAM HOME Rural
Nestled within the picturesque Tallebudgera Valley, a childhood dream was magnificently brought to life in this impressive rural residence by Lea Design Studio. Creating a contemporary interpretation of a lodge that sits harmoniously within its bush setting, this impressive residence incorporates all the key elements of a mountain chalet - a style aesthetic admired by the client.
The design process for architect John Lea began by carefully reviewing an existing plan that fell well short of the client’s expectations - revealing a lack of consideration for both the natural landform and for functionality. In addition to this, there was considerable opposition to the client’s desired multistorey vision by a neighbouring property, despite the proposed home being entirely hidden from public
view. Avoiding an expensive and challenging approval process, an inspired design was developed which incorporates terraced levels that take full advantage of the natural topography of the site. The clever design minimised the requirement for costly excavation and retaining and achieved an impressive multi-level home at the southern end.
Throughout the project, a commitment to natural materials was paramount. Spotted gum timber was sourced from a local mill, ensuring that every connection was meticulously crafted, concealing bolts and leaving no visible nails or screws. Stonemasons spent months meticulously laying the exquisite Arenisca stone cladding and paving, which adds depth and a rustic character to the home’s striking exterior.
Stepping through into a lobby space with soaring ceiling, guests are greeted with an abundance of natural light
pouring through south-facing clerestory windows above the entry. The lobby overlooks the Great Room, which features a large fireplace and offers breathtaking views of the natural amphitheatre and surrounding subtropical vegetation. On the mid ground level, the Great Room connects to the kitchen which includes a butler’s pantry concealed from view by a staircase and dining area, while the master bedroom suite occupies an elevated position, affording privacy and picturesque vistas, each bedroom has a balcony facing north overlooking gardens and bushland.
The transformation of this rural property into a luxurious country lodge stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and thoughtful design. By embracing the existing topography and incorporating natural materials, Lea Design Studio has successfully blended the client’s childhood dream with the beauty of the Tallebudgera Valley. The resulting home is a harmonious sanctuary that seamlessly integrates with its surroundings.

MINIMALISM Clifftop
Perched on a cliff in the sought after seaside town of Scarborough, NSW, and offering panoramic ocean views, this new contemporary home by Tass Construction Group has been meticulously designed, engineered and constructed to endure the distinctive demands presented by its coastal clifftop setting.
Working with a long narrow block, the home’s striking modern facade is defined by two rectilinear structures clad in Victorian Sillvertop Ash, which will weather and age over time, adding an organic quality to the home, and beautifully complementing the stunning natural surrounds. Meticulous attention to detail was given to every aspect of the build, ensuring the home could stand up against harsh weather conditions, this included heavy bracing to comply with wind rating standards, and materials were carefully selected for wind rating compliance whilst simultaneously incorporating the client’s vision for their new home into the design.
Entering through an impressive iron door, the home’s minimalist aesthetic continues in the interior, with an industrial-style vibe created through a material selection that includes exposed stackbond brickwork, custom concrete benchtops and brushed copper tapware. Paying homage to the site’s history, the brick was chosen to reflect that which was used in the old Scarborough Post Office, adding an element of nostalgic charm to the home.
The expansive open plan living area maximises the breathtaking 180-degree views which are framed by floor-to-ceiling windows both on the lower and upper level that houses the master suite, this is accessed through a unique perforated steel suspended walkway, further adding to the edgy urban appeal of the home. A further two bedrooms are located at the front of the property that also features a car turntable for easy access on to the busy street.
The result is an extraordinary custom home that brings the client’s clifftop dream to life, showcasing Tass Construction Group’s unwavering commitment to quality craftsmanship and attention to detail.

MODERN BARNHOUSE
Situated in a picturesque rural setting, with views over undulating neighbouring farmland out to Western Port Bay to the east and Port Philip Bay to the north, this Flinders home by GSTRUCT Group is the perfect fusion of rustic rural living and modern refinement.
Designed to meet the requirements of rugged farm life and coastal weather conditions as well as take advantage of the surrounding views, the home presents as three individual volumes, nestled into the sloping land. The barn-like structures interconnect to form an impressive
920sqm family residence that despite its size, blends harmoniously with the environment, largely due to an inspired selection of organic materials which have been used extensively in both the home’s construction and internal finishes. Inspired by traditional farm buildings the exterior of the home is largely clad in silver top ash timber with an oiled finish designed to weather and age over time. Embracing off-grid living, sustainability was prioritised incorporating a log fireplace and woodpellet boiler for heating, solar panels, multiple rainwater storage tanks, and natural dam irrigation.
Given the home’s modest silhouette, the luxurious contemporary interiors of the 6 bedroom, 4 bathroom home are somewhat unexpected. Dramatic double height ceilings ensure the home is flooded in natural light adding a sense of scale and grandeur to the home, whilst skilfully defined spaces such as the sunken lounge and a curated selection of textures and tones ensure the home has an inviting warmth whilst still feeling open to the surrounding environment. Throughout the home has been meticulously finished with exceptional attention to detail a true credit to the skill and commitment of the GSTRUCT team.

VILLACasa
Designed by Reece Keil Design and built by Tidal Constructions, this gorgeous Mediterranean inspired home was conceived as the builder’s own ‘forever home’ and saw Tidal awarded the 2022 Gold Coast MBA Home of the Year.
Working with an expansive 4497sqm elevated building site in the Gold Coast’s Reedy Creek, a primary focus of the design brief was to take maximum advantage of the spectacular views that extended out to the ocean. This proved a little more difficult with the client’s requesting a two bedroom dwelling to reside in, that needed to be constructed prior to the design being finalised. This required strategic planning and positioning of the dwelling on the site so that it could seamlessly integrate into the final 5 bedroom home design.
Utilising the topography of the site, the home was designed over three levels, creating various ‘wings’ that would optimise the breathtaking views while simultaneously creating distinct living zones within the home. This approach created private spaces to retreat to, while the interconnected living areas foster a sense of unity and interaction throughout the entire residence.
Referencing the Mediterranean inspired design, soft curves and arches feature extensively throughout the home. On the lower level each set of arched doorways allow the home to be seamlessly opened up to the outside to enjoy coastal breezes and the stunning ocean vistas.
A juxtaposition of raw and refined surfaces celebrate the intriguing relationship between these two contrasting elements - this includes extensive use of concrete which has been used in both the construction and internal fabric of the home, creating an interesting dichotomy of contemporary & classic aesthetics which adds to the home’s unique appeal.

On the palate there is an amazing fusion of red and black fruits that come together seamlessly. Plums, mulberries, blood orange and an assortment of red berries. There’s some freshness thanks to a little green capsicum and some Herbs de Provence. Silky, rounded tannins bring that element of elegance that we were promised. This is a delightful McLaren Vale GSM that can be enjoyed early in life but will cellar beautifully and evolve exceptionally into the future. www.darenberg.com.au
A long, lingering and persistent wine that sits with you for a long time. The exciting fine grain tannins have developed over time making for a wine that can be enjoyed now, but promises huge potential. Will cellar for 20 to 30 years, easily. A lovely wine on its own accord, but suggest pairing with a rich meat dish like lamb or steak.

2019 Anchor of Oceanus Shiraz
Named after the Greek Titan god of River Okeanos, Oceanus, Our Shiraz is bold and only for the brave. Deep and concentrated red fruits and coconut oak on the nose are accompanied by a full and rich mouthfeel with complex layers of dark plummy fruits, toffee and spices. The flavour is rounded off by a fine minerality. Balanced acidity suggests excellent cellaring potential.
2022 Sphere of Uranus Chardonnay
A 'New Wave’ of Chardonnay. A bright and textured Chardonnay with tropical flavours and a buttery taste. Lean with good acidic structure, this pour matures on the palate like no Chardonnay on this earth. Complex in flavour and finish this light Chardonnay has citrus aromas, angled flavour laced with hints of almond and passion fruit.
McHenry Hohnen
Margaret River
Renowned for its commitment to crafting exceptional wines, this boutique winery was founded by two well known Margaret River families, the McHenrys and the Hohnens. Their shared love for the land and the art of winemaking has resulted in a portfolio of exquisite vintages. Here, the fusion of old-world techniques and innovative practices culminates in wines that are a harmonious symphony of flavors, leaving a lasting impression on the most discerning palates.
At the heart of McHenry Hohnen’s passion for winemaking is the family estate, encompassing three vineyards with roots in classic Chardonnay and Bordeaux varieties. However, throughout the years, visionary founder, Murray McHenry, has been at the forefront of expanding the viticultural horizons in the region resulting in the winery earning an esteemed reputation among wine enthusiasts for less traditional varieties such as Marsanne, Roussanne, Grenache, Mataro, and Zinfandel.

Hazel’s Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon
Fragrant aromas of red currants, cherry confection, violets and cedar are complemented by savoury black olive, tobacco and gravel dust undertones. The velvety palate has flash and refinement, revealing hints of cassis, bitter cocoa and graphite well supported by a framework of firm but fine tannins providing length and definition to the palate.

Laterite Hills Chardonnay
Pure, complex, and very satisfying; this is a charming expression of Southern Margaret River Chardonnay. The palate is powerful yet crystalline and defined by a mealy texture and that long, savoury acid line this area is renowned for. A true reflection of place and season, this Chardonnay pays homage to our farming and winemaking philosophy.
2021 BDX
A Malbec dominant blend with Cabernet Sauvignon providing structure and Petit Verdot adding lift, this wine bursts with aromas of cassis and crushed violets. Sweetened spices and mulberries are complemented by more savoury notes of cedar and mocha from maturation in the finest selection of French oak barriques. The palate is voluminous yet focussed with a ripe frame of fine tannins giving length to this deliciously fragrant wine.

HEART & SOUL A garden with
For founder and Director of multi-award-winning COS Design, Steve Taylor, the creation of the gardens and rear outdoor entertaining space of this Mornington Peninsula home was a project of passion, very close to his heart. Having designed the home itself with striking features that include a red-brick tower-like structure, and incorporating fabulous spaces for indoor plantings, the isolation period during covid presented the perfect opportunity to finish the gardens and create a sophisticated outdoor entertaining space for his new family home.
Working with the home’s unique architecture, a slightly awkward shaped sloping block, and with the main living area situated on the upper-level completely disconnected from the garden below, considerable thought and imagination was required to create outdoor spaces that would harmonise with the home and present a compelling invitation to occupants to head downstairs and enjoy Australia’s great outdoors. Executed in COS’s renowned, award-winning style, every inch of available space has been utilised to incorporate everything you could possibly desire for refined outdoor living, including a day bed by the pool that includes built in stools and a swim up bar, custom mosaic tiled spa, covered alfresco area, firepit, fireplace and pizza oven - all surrounded by lush coastal gardens.
The pool is positioned 1.2m above ground level to reduce the need for pool fencing while still meeting regulations. Limestone fingers extend along the pool’s perimeter, adding a contemporary edge to the design.
Photography: Erik Holt
With help from Exquisite Pools, Steve put his heart and soul into the project, personally building the entire landscape himself on weekends and after hours, in between working on clients’ design projects.
Exceptional planning and execution has resulted in a space that captivates from every angle. Muted tones and colours, foliage contrasts and the unique shapes & forms of the hardscape creating a rich and engaging tapestry that perfectly complements the home’s exterior. The pool’s flowing curves and soft garden beds beautifully contrasting with the building’s strong lines - achieving perfect balance and a outdoor living area that is truly connected to the home and its occupants.

Black BEAUTY
As part of a significant overhaul of this heritage listed Melbourne home, multi-award-winning Aloha Pools were given the task of reimagining the swimming pool and courtyard area. Using a contemporary design approach and utilising unique materials including black Zimbabwe stone, they’ve created a compelling space that oozes style and sophistication whilst beautifully complementing the classic architecture of the home.
The pool was enhanced with a newly designed overflow edge and custom stone grating around the perimeter and tiled with gorgeous ceramic mosaics. The outcome is truly breathtaking, as the pool now serves as a mesmerizing reflective surface, beautifully complementing the surrounding sculptures. To further elevate the space, additional garden lighting, reduced planter box volumes, and new plantings were added, infusing the area with timeless charm and style.
