Not long ago, I was a wide-eyed high schooler taking an admitted students’ tour of UVA. The kids showing us around led us through the ins and outs of signing up for classes, talked up their upcoming social events and a cappella concerts, discussed the dining hall options at length, and maybe sprinkled in a dash of Thomas Jefferson.

One thing they certainly didn’t mention: slavery.

In future tours, I think that will change. The striking new Memorial to Enslaved Laborers, the subject of our feature this week (p. 14), will surely become a stop on every admissions visit. Students who arrive at the school will begin class with the knowledge that the arches through which they walk were constructed by enslaved laborers. That’s no small feat at a university that has carefully massaged its own history for so long.

The voices in our story describe eloquently how much the memorial means to a wide variety of constituencies in town. We hear from historians, activists, students, and the descendants of the people who are named on the granite wall; we hear about change and family and tears.

Many of these people, while praising the memorial, also emphasize that the real work is just beginning. It’s imperative that no one connected with UVA be allowed to think, “Okay, we did a memorial, racism solved.” The stone structure must be accompanied by structural reforms. That’s no easy task when the structures are centuries in the making—but every day, the past becomes harder to ignore.—Ben Hitchcock

Daniel McMahon, whose online harassment and racist threats caused activist Don Gathers to suspend his 2019 City Council campaign, has been sentenced for his crimes. The Floridabased man will spend 41 months in federal prison and, upon release, serve a three-year probation during which he won’t be allowed to use the internet without court supervision.

Harassment sentence

Just days after a Kenosha police officer shot Jacob Blake seven times in the back, sparking national outrage and protests, City Manager Tarron Richardson decided to crack down on gatherings in Charlottesville—targeting those organized by Black residents.

While Richardson supports the right to “peaceably assemble” amidst the pandemic, he explained in a press release Thursday evening that “obstructing city streets and using parks without the proper permits will no longer be allowed.”

The city also will begin fining organizers for events that happened weeks or months ago. Rob Gray, who helped plan a Juneteenth celebration in Washington Park, received a $500 fine, and the Black Joy Fest and the Reclaim the Park celebration held last month at city parks are currently under review.

In a letter sent to Gray last week, Richardson claimed he had discussed the city’s ordinance on COVID-19 restrictions with him the day before Juneteenth, explaining that the city was not issuing special use permits for events held in public parks, and that gatherings of 50 or more were banned. But Gray refused to cancel his event, and agreed in advance to pay the civil penalty.

Though Richardson didn’t name names, it sure seems like the warning was meant for Black activists Rosia Parker and Katrina Turner, who planned a Friday night march from the city police department to Tonsler Park in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. He threatened to issue them citations for not having a special event permit, but the pair took to the streets anyway, along with 30 or so other protesters.

“They won’t shut me up,” Parker tweeted shortly after the press release came out.

Seven inmates total have now tested positive for COVID-19 at the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail. Pointing to severe outbreaks in nearby correctional facilities, Defund Cville Police sent a letter to the ACRJ demanding the jail ramp up its testing procedures, distribute more hygiene products to inmates, and halt all new admissions to the facility.

After gathering the required 5,000 signatures, Kanye West has qualified for the November ballot as an independent presidential candidate in Virginia. But the Washington Post reports that some of those signers felt they were hoodwinked into signing in favor of West, and that representatives from the campaign misrepresented how their signatures would be used. It’s unclear how the controversy might affect West’s floundering run.

gainst the advice of pretty much any person, group, or institution that’s decided to weigh in on the topic, UVA is sticking to its plan to hold in-person classes, the school confirmed on Friday.

Though many upperclassmen have already settled in to their off-campus apartments, the decision means that hordes of firstyears will move in to their dorm rooms this coming weekend.

“We know people will contract the virus and some will get sick,” the administration wrote on Friday. “There will likely be outbreaks that we will have to work to contain…

You can do everything in your power to plan and prepare, but it still might not be enough, as things can change rapidly.”

Indeed, things are already changing rapidly, and not for the better. As of Tuesday morning, 89 students and 34 faculty, staff, or contract employees had tested positive for the virus. Ninety-eight of those positives have been confirmed since August 24.

One new person was hospitalized on Monday, and 16 people have been hospitalized since the beginning of last week.

In the Thomas Jefferson Health District, the count of those infected continues to rise. From August 21 to 28, the week prior to UVA’s decision to return, 155 new cases were confirmed in the area.

Statewide, hospital ICUs are currently at 77 percent capacity, a 10 percent increase from last year’s average.

UVA has decided to plow forward despite evidence from college towns across the country that doing so will result in a dramatic increase in infections. At the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill—a large, selective, southeastern state university— the return of students heralded an immediate outbreak. One thousand, forty-

four students and 56 employees at Chapel Hill have tested positive as of Monday.

And though UVA can’t control whether or not students return to their off-campus apartments, the school could have kept students out of university-run residence halls—the very locations that have been most severely affected at UNC. One Chapel Hill residence hall, Granville Towers, has seen 188 cases so far.

UVA instructors have the option to conduct their classes entirely online, and most of them have exercised that option. Students will move back to dorms, but many will sit in their rooms for days of online-only classes that could have just as easily been completed in more well-ventilated spaces.

The COVID response from the administration has been so poor that it galvanized students and staff to begin efforts to unionize. Two weeks ago, The United Campus Workers of Virginia announced that it had come in to being in part because of dissatisfaction with the administration’s actions.

Charlottesville residents have been just as vocal about their concerns about the return of students. The Charlottesville Human Rights Commission, a city advisory panel, called on the school to hold solely virtual classes. City Council has been equally clear: In July, Mayor Nikuyah Walker called the plan “a recipe for disaster.”

If anyone would be excited for the return of students, you’d think it would be the students themselves. But even UVA’s own student council has called for the suspension of in-person classes, and in doing so, the council has exhibited a moral clarity the administration has lacked. “The University cannot, in good conscience, resume in-person instruction,” the council writes. “COVID-19 will spread, the Charlottesville community will suffer, and students, faculty, staff, and community members will die.”

or as long as communications departments have existed, big institutions have dumped their controversial news on Friday afternoon.

Sure enough, UVA’s decision to move ahead as planned—with students living on Grounds and attending in-person classes—was announced via email after 4pm last Friday.

The announcement—its timing, its style, let alone its content—was the latest university communication in a summer full of emails and videos that have left a bad taste in many students’ mouths.

Since classes transitioned online in March, UVA students have been inundated with plans and promises from the administration, regarding a safe return to Grounds this fall in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Subject lines such as “Updates to our Fall 2020 Plan” or “COVID Resources, Move-In Dates, Employee Testing” can be found in every UVA inbox. On August 22, students received a message with a subject line reading “Important Message from Dean Allen Groves.”

This “Important Message” was a link to an eight-minute video where Groves, the university’s dean of students, addressed the undergraduate student body in a nondescript room in front of an out-of-focus backdrop with the UVA logo.

In the video, Groves detailed the new COVID-19 policies for students, and laid out the repercussions for disobeying these policies—most likely suspension for a semester or more.

“We want you to be here, if your own health and safety permit,” said Groves. “But I need every one of you to do your part to make that happen.”

Trinity Moore, a second-year from Raleigh, North Carolina, is scheduled to move

into Bice House with her sister on August 31. She did not watch Groves’ address.

“I didn’t watch it because I knew it was going to be saying the same things like all the other emails, ‘the students are going to have to work together to make sure that COVID doesn’t impact our campus hard’ and all of that stuff, blah blah blah,” Moore says. “...There’s no new reactions from me.”

Heather Thomas, a fourth-year from Fairfax, Virginia, watched the video. She didn’t like the format because, to her, it felt like Groves was on the offensive: “It seemed like he was attacking us for doing nothing wrong. It was a little bit premature.”

Additionally, the video undermined previous attempts to rally the community together, says third-year Sarandon Elliott.

“I feel like that video was almost to divide us. It almost felt like you were in a dystopia.

Every man for himself.”

In Friday’s final, decisive email, UVA President Jim Ryan writes, “This semester will not be easy, as we have said, but the UVA community has faced challenges before. Let’s meet this moment, and this extraordinary challenge, together.”

Some say all the self-congratulation and thinly-veiled elitism has made the actual decision-making process more obscure.

“Instead of being honest and upfront with students, they’re trying to make it seem like they have things under control, which of course no university can since we’re in the middle of a pandemic,” Moore says.

In May, the university wrote that reopening plans meant “placing a good deal of trust in our students to look out for the safety and well-being not just of each other, but of our faculty, staff, and community members.”

Now, with first-years arriving in a few days, students feel wary and mistrustful. “They don’t really care if we’re on Grounds,” Thomas says. “I think they care that they can collect full tuition.”

eavy breathing, lots of sweating, and plenty of people nearby— gyms and workout studios seem like a perfect place for COVID transmission.

Though some industries have been slow to recover during Virginia’s phased reopening, gyms have seen customers eager to return.

Workout spots around town have adopted stringent safety protocols—and benefited from customers who are desperate to get out of the house and move around.

After at least three months of closure, gyms and fitness facilities in Virginia were given the green light to reopen when Virginia entered Phase 2 on June 12.

Michael Towne, owner of Solidarity CrossFit, adapted to COVID by installing an elaborate new fan system to redirect the airflow in the gym. “We have redesigned our gym airflow extensively in response to the growing science related to airborne transmission,” Towne says. “While we can service less clients than before, we are actually working more and upping our offerings, which is I think a trend for many businesses due to the nature of running a facility during a pandemic.”

Purvelo, the popular Charlottesville-based cycling studio, reopened a few weeks ago. Ian Dillard, a seasoned instructor at Purvelo, says the early days of the shutdown were hard for the studio. “Like all small businesses, COVID has definitely had a huge impact on Purvelo,” he says. “Financially, we have definitely taken a hit.”

But in recent weeks, the studio has enjoyed full classes, and even had potential pedalers on their waitlist. “We are seeing demand for classes and we have been able to meet that demand while also using safe practices,” Dillard says.

Erica Perkins, executive director of intramural-recreational sports at UVA, over-

sees operations of the university’s four recreation and fitness centers. UVA closed its facilities on March 18. The Aquatic & Fitness Center reopened on August 3, and the North Grounds pool reopened by reservation only on August 10.

Perkins says she has received an abundance of positive feedback from patrons who have decided to return. “People are exercising and have been both compliant with policies and appreciative of our services and safety procedures,” she says. “We have been very impressed with the positive response to our operations.”

Like the smaller studios, Perkins says the UVA gyms suffered financially. “The Intramural-Recreational Sports Department has not been able to host or offer the range of activities and events that typically generate revenue and has suffered membership losses while we were closed,” she explains. Memorial Gymnasium, where basketballs and volleyballs normally bounce incessantly, remains closed and empty.

While the revenue lost from months of in-person classes was substantial, many gyms stayed afloat by offering virtual fitness classes to their members. “We responded early at the start of the pandemic and pivoted to virtual classes and run and strength coaching services to maintain many of our members,” says Ann Dunn, owner and founder of Formula Complete Fitness. Now some customers are coming back in person, too.

The gym industry finds itself at the center of a paradox: Months of quarantine and isolation have left people antsy and eager to get out and exercise, but going to the gym also means risking exposure to COVID. It seems, though, that this is a risk that many Charlottesville gym-goers are willing to take.

UVA Memorial to Enslaved Laborers leads calls for change

E

lijah. Julia. Sam. I took in every name, and let each 15 resonate within me, as I quietly examined the granite slabs. I saw the name of my brother, then I saw it several more times. If he had been born just over 150 years ago, he could have been enslaved at the University of Virginia, alongside the rest of our family.

But what struck me even more were the unnamed. Of the 4,000 deep gashes inscribed into the memorial walls—each representing a person enslaved at the university—only 578 have names resting above them. Because they were viewed as property, and treated as such, the identities of more than 3,000 men, women, and children remain lost to history, and may never be discovered.

With its compelling symbolism and innovative design, the Memorial to Enslaved Laborers urges its visitors to confront these cruel realities of slavery, and honor the countless contributions enslaved people made to UVA, left unacknowledged for nearly two centuries. It is a site for learning, mourning, and remembering, as the university works to heal from its violent past.

As recent protests against systemic racism held at the memorial show, it also serves as a call for change. The painful effects of slavery can still be felt and seen around UVA today, and the school has a long way to go to achieve racial equity. But for many, paying respect to the Black people who built the university is the first step in the right direction, and offers a glimpse of a better future.

In 1619, the White Lion landed in Point Comfort, Virginia.

The “20 and odd” Angolans aboard the ship were sold to Governor Sir George Yeardley, and brought to Jamestown— becoming the first enslaved Africans in England’s colonies in the Americas.

Nearly 400 years later, in 2007, the Virginia General Assembly issued an apology for the state’s role in the institution of slavery. UVA’s Board of Visitors followed suit two months later, expressing “profound regret” for the university’s use of enslaved people.

“Most people step over it all of the time,” says Marcus Martin, MD, former vice president and chief officer for diversity and equity at UVA. The low stone “falls short in that it’s not very visible, and only talks about the period of 1817 to 1826. …Slavery didn’t end until 1865, and there were more than several hundred free and enslaved men and women [who] helped erect the university and maintain it.”

“The university, at that point, didn’t have the tradition of telling the full story about its history. Everything was focused on Jefferson,” says UVA history professor and associate dean Kirt von Daacke. “There was sort of a sense that Jefferson’s hand was in everything—he built it, he designed it. That was a vague myth.”

In 2010, two students—one an intern for University and Community Action for Racial Equity, the other a co-chair of the Student Council Diversity Initiatives Committee— took the controversy surrounding the marker as a chance to raise greater awareness about slavery at UVA, forming a group called Memorial to Enslaved Laborers.

The group organized community discussions on the creation of a memorial, among other initiatives. And the following year, it held a design competition.

“There were some neat concepts, but they were not of the quality to withstand the environment and test of time, [and] to be approved and erected on Grounds,” says Martin.

Accompanied by student leaders, Martin met with thenpresident Teresa Sullivan’s cabinet in 2013, proposing the university create a commission entirely dedicated to studying the university’s history of slavery, and recommending ways to commemorate the contributions of enslaved people— including a memorial.

“One of the first things we heard [from the community] was you can’t build a memorial that is meant to humanize the enslaved without picturing humanity in some way,” says von Daacke “This was sometimes interpreted as a call for a figurative sculpture of an enslaved person,” like Isabella Gibbons, who was enslaved at UVA and became an educator in Charlottesville after emancipation, he explains.

“But of course at UVA, we can’t do that. We have no images of enslaved people at UVA. We have post-emancipation photos, [which are] probably not good images to use to capture what life was like in slavery,” he adds. “Or there are pictures of people who continued to work for the university during Jim Crow, and were treated by white Charlottesville and UVA as the faithful slave. Their picture and story were told by [whites], and is not reflective of who these people were.”

Instead, architectural historian Wilson proposed a more abstract, circular structure for the memorial, symbolizing the broken chains of slavery. It’s also a nod to the ring shout, a dance rooted in West African traditions celebrating spiritual liberation practiced by enslaved people, during which they clapped, prayed aloud, sang hymns, and shuffled their feet in a counterclockwise direction.

The ring is 80 feet in diameter—the same as the Rotunda.

“It’s nice that [the memorial is] visible from town and not within the enclosure of the university, on the Lawn or on Grounds, where these people were forced to work,” says Jalane Schmidt, a UVA religious studies professor and community activist. “They had complete lives. They did not define themselves solely as laborers. ...They were members of a community.”

According to von Daacke, it was not easy getting everyone on the Board of Visitors to agree to build the memorial “sooner rather than later.”

“When you start with projects like this, running counter to how you’ve done things before, there’s often a sort of fear-based perspective about it. That if we do this, it will bring protests. ...That it’s talking about an unpleasant reality of the university’s past, and will be bad for the university, ” he explains.

“Our job [as the PCSU] was to convince everybody that no that’s not true. ...Embracing difficult history is beneficial to us in a multitude of ways,” he says. “That takes some time.

You have to do the research and public talks, where everyone gets used to hearing these stories, and you have to talk to people one-on-one. [But] protests aren’t going to come unless you do nothing.”

In 2016, after years of lobbying, the BOV finally commissioned the memorial, and put together a design team: architecture firm Höweler + Yoon; alumna and architectural historian Dr. Mabel O. Wilson; landscape architect and professor Gregg Bleam; polymedia Nigerian-American artist Eto Otitigbe, and community facilitator Dr. Frank Dukes, co-founder of University and Community Action for Racial Equity and past director of the Institute for Environmental Negotiation at the UVA School of Architecture.

The design team immediately sought input from the community, sending out surveys and hosting public forums for students, staff, faculty, alumni, local residents, and descendants of the enslaved both inside and outside of Charlottesville, with the support of the PCSU. In 2017, the BOV approved a final design and location for the memorial, and allocated funding toward its $7 million price tag the next year, alongside private donations.

After about a year of construction, the project was completed this April. Though its dedication ceremony had to be rescheduled for next April—during Black Alumni Weekend—due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the memorial is now open, “demanding you pay attention and interact with it,” says von Daacke.

The memorial “is really a reflection of the community in Charlottesville,” says Otitigbe, who is based in Brooklyn, New York. “[We] had a lot of interesting conversations with different community members and descendants…I am really thankful they all welcomed me and allowed me to do this, because I was essentially working with, in some way, the remains of their ancestors.”

Douglas arrived at UVA as a graduate student in the ’90s. Confederate flags flapped from fraternity house windows, and students regularly popped up at parties wearing blackface. (Those things still happen, but with a little less frequency.)

“White supremacy was very much inculcated into the culture of the

land acknowledgments, both now made with fanfare and solemnity: It’s a nice gesture,” she says. “But absent concrete material actions of repair, it remains just a gesture.”

Martin echoes Schmidt’s calls for sweeping structural change, pointing to the detailed list of recommendations the PCSU made in its final report to Teresa Sullivan in 2018.

For Martin, one of the most crucial issues facing UVA is its small population of Black students. While the state of Virginia is nearly 20 percent Black, only about 7 percent—a little over 1,000—of the university’s undergraduate students are Black.

UVA doesn’t just need to admit more Black students, but figure out how to attract and keep them here, explains Martin. He says the university offers admission to around 1,000 Black students each year, but only 35 percent of them accept.

A solution, he says, would be to offer more scholarships through the Ridley Scholarship Fund, minimizing the student debt for a demographic that statistically already has less wealth. The university could also explore ways to create a need-based scholarship fund for descendants of its enslaved laborers through the fund.

Martin also calls for the creation of more fellowships related to Black studies, so the school can attract more Black faculty—4 percent of the faculty of the state’s flagship university is Black.

Schmidt is all for more scholarships, but she believes UVA needs to include reparations in its admissions practices, like Georgetown University, which, since 2016, has given preferred admissions, or “legacy” status, to the descendants of those enslaved there.

UVA should not just aim to get more Black students, but also make them feel included and valued once they are on Grounds, says Elliott. This includes following up on the range of recommendations issued by the university’s Racial Equity Task Force last month, and removing racist symbols and names—from Alderman Library to the George Rogers Clark statue.

“If we are not actively fighting racial and economic inequity, we are not properly honoring enslaved peoples,” she adds.

After spending an hour or so at the memorial, I left feeling pained. Black people at UVA, in Charlottesville, and across the country have endured so much violence and oppression.

The memorial is here, but the violence has yet to cease.

But I also left with a sense of hope. Now more than ever, radical student leaders and activists of color like Elliott are holding the university accountable for its racism—without the initial push from students, it’s likely the memorial wouldn’t exist today. Through their efforts, and the efforts of the next generation, and the next, UVA may someday atone for its troubled past.

Shortly after the murder of George Floyd, dozens of UVA Health employees gathered at the memorial, kneeling for eight minutes and 46 seconds, the amount of time Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin dug his knee into Floyd’s neck.

In addition to raising awareness about police violence against Black people, the group called attention to systemic inequality and racism in the health care system—bringing a crucial purpose of the memorial to fruition.

Now that the memorial is finished, the university needs to answer its call to action, and implement real changes, says Schmidt.

school,” she says. “Going to a university with that much blatant anti-Black racism, to have this [memorial] as prominent as it is [and] know there is a movement towards a kind of respect for the community the university sits in...It feels much different from when I got here.”

For activist Don Gathers, seeing the names—or lack of names—on the memorial for the first time was “incredibly powerful,” bringing him to tears, he says.

“To stand there and take it all in—it speaks volumes to you. You realize the struggle and sacrifice that those individuals made, and were forced to make, to bring us to the point we are now.”

Though the memorial is effective, Gathers believes the location could have been better chosen.

“Where it is, it still has the semblance of...the Rotunda and Jefferson himself looking down upon the enslaved,” he says.

“Community members told us that they don’t go on Grounds,” says Dukes. “We don’t feel welcome. So if you build it on the Grounds...we’re not going to come. It’s not going to be for us.”

Third-year Black student activist Sarandon Elliott believes the location of the memorial makes it much more visible, especially to students.

“When people walk towards UVA, they’re going to have to see that. And I also like that it’s near the Corner, a really busy area. People walking past it can stop and reflect upon it,” says Elliott, president of the school’s Young Democratic Socialists of America.

It remains to be seen if the memorial’s current location— technically off Grounds but still very much amidst the UVA bubble, tucked between the hospital and the Rotunda, just across the street from the student-swarmed Corner, will attract a lot of Charlottesville residents.

Though it’s just about impossible to identify every enslaved person, von Daacke and other researchers continue to search for names, occupations, and kinships to engrave on the monument’s inner wall. (A handful have already been found since it was completed, he says.)

Last year, UVA also began discovering the names of enslaved people through its new descendant outreach project, spearheaded by renowned genealogist Shelley Murphy, which will continue for at least the next two years.

The descendants have formed a leadership group, but are still getting themselves organized, according to UVA employee and descendant DeTeasa Gathers. They plan to conduct educational tours and talks at the memorial, when the pandemic finally comes to an end.

“We consider this very vital, because the history books in Virginia are not inclusive and not very detailed [on] the quandary of slavery,” says Cauline Yates, who is also a descendant. “[Students] are our up-and-coming leaders of the future. We’re trying to make sure that they understand what even happened in their very own backyard.”

“This is not completely about us. This is more about telling the unvarnished truth about what happened going forward,” says DeTeasa Gathers. “We see this memorial as people who were enslaved...but it did last for generations past. It’s important to not forget the generations behind it who have been affected.”

Zest for life PVCC culinary director leaves behind a legacy of passion

These virtues are extolled again and again as the Charlottesville food community mourns the passing of chef and food educator Eric Breckoff, who died unexpectedly on August 16 at age 60.

Breckoff was the much-beloved inaugural director of the culinary arts program at Piedmont Virginia Community College.

John Donnelly, vice president of instruction and student services at PVCC, says Breckoff was an exceptional choice to run the program.

“He loved teaching and loved what he did and was a great program head and he was so passionate about the program, the students, and teaching,” says Donnelly, who also notes how far-reaching Breckoff ’s efforts into the community were. The chef connected his PVCC culinary arts program students to the Monticello Harvest Days and CATEC, through cooking demos and helping place students in jobs in their area of interest. “It’s a significant loss for the college, for the program, and the culinary arts community,” says Donnelly. “He was well known and well respected, and we’ll miss him tremendously.”

Another PVCC colleague, Ridge Schuyler, worked alongside Breckoff at the Jefferson School African American Heritage Center, where the culinary arts program is located.

“He was larger than life with huge passions: a passion for food, a passion for politics, and a passion for people, especially those who saw food as a way of improving their lot in life,” Schuyler says. He jokes that his proximity to Breckoff also meant the threat of an expanding waistline.

“His students would produce meals, desserts, entrées, and appetizers, and he would bring [them] to our office and stand over us till we tried everything,” says Schuyler. “He was exuberant about both the food and the people who produced it.”

And his students carried his passion forward as they began their own careers.

Alicia Simmons and Vinnie Falcone learned through Breckoff ’s program before taking jobs at Belmont’s Tavola restaurant, where they each rose quickly through the kitchen ranks to become sous chefs (at different times). “They arrived well-prepared for the job, and became indispensable,” says Tavola chef/owner Michael Keaveny, who says Breckoff was his first call when staffing needs arose.

Pinot Noir

If there is one grape variety that many identify with autumn, it’s pinot noir. This red variety produces wines of medium weight, relatively lower tannins, and complex flavors of red and black fruits, Asian and baking spices, and savory characteristics such as mushroom, fall leaves, and dried tea leaves.

While there isn’t a lot of pinot noir in Virginia, Ankida Ridge Vineyards makes an excellent example, and the 2017 Pinot Noir ($44, anikdaridge.com) is a great wine from a great vintage. On the nose are aromas of cherry, plum, blackberries, and baking spices, echoed in the flavor, along with a pleasant cola and a long finish that presents hints of vanilla. Fans of pinot noir should also be on the lookout for Ankida Ridge’s yet unreleased 2017 Pinot Noir Reserve, which should be available soon.

ith current temperatures and humidity remaining high, many of us are likely still enjoying crisp and refreshing white, rosé, and sparkling wines, and the thought of drinking something heavier seems impossible. However, soon it will be autumn, and the cooler weather will bring crisper evenings, more time outdoors on porches and decks, and food from the barbecue, grill, or smoker.

The change in season also brings out the heartier wines. White wines with more weight on the palate and aromatic complexity take over from the bright, lean, high-acid summer go-tos. Fuller-bodied red wines, with more structure from tannins and heavier flavor extraction, become welcome companions that promote conversation, comfort, and inspire contemplation.

Virginia wine has many options well suited to this time of year, including familiar varieties such as chardonnay and cabernet franc. Here are some less-well-known examples that are worth seeking out.

Cabernet Sauvignon For some red wine fans, the bigger and bolder the better. In other regions, cabernet sauvignon fits that bill, but it can be difficult to fully ripen in the local climate. As a result, you don’t see a lot of cabernet sauvignon as a single variety bottling in Virginia. Instead, big red wines often consist of blends that may also include cabernet franc, merlot, petit verdot, and tannat. However, the right vineyard site combined with an excellent vintage year can bring success, and this is the case for the Pollak Vineyards 2017 Cabernet

white wine, it has full and complex aromas and flavors that often include honey notes, spice characters, and tropical fruits. With a heavier body and lots of complexity, it’s a perfect wine for fall.

I highly recommend the Michael Shaps Wineworks 2017 Petit Manseng ($30, virginiawineworks.com). If I could have only one white wine from Virginia to drink during the autumn months, this would be the one.

It exhibits lime, white flowers, and wet stone on the nose. It has a broad, rich, luxurious feel with complex flavors of lemon-lime, beeswax, and papaya. A very long finish extends with a pleasant hint of white stone.

Like rkatsiteli, this wine is better when served a bit warmer than most white wines.

Sauvignon ($50, pollakvineyards.com). On the nose there are hints of vanilla with lots of red fruit and a bit of stewed black plum.

On the palate, there are red fruits, vanilla, baking spices, cinnamon, and a hint of smoke with a lingering finish that includes some crushed stone characteristics. This wine has solid tannic structure and great potential to age, but is also balanced and approachable if you are drinking it now. It’s a wonderful wine and winner of the 2020 Monticello Cup. I wholeheartedly encourage you to try these wines as you raise a glass to autumn in Virginia. These bottles showcase great things happening in local vineyards and wineries, and they will definitely reward your time and attention.

Rkatsiteli is perhaps not a variety that immediately jumps to mind when it comes to white wine in Virginia. It’s one of the oldest known grape varieties and it originated in the country of Georgia. The wine is spicy, floral, and a bit textural on the tongue. These characteristics make it a good pairing for roast pork, smoked vegetables, beans, and stews. It also pairs well with Asian- or Middle Eastern-spiced cuisines, such as dishes from India, Lebanon, and Vietnam.

There’s not a lot in Virginia, but I can recommend two excellent examples: the 2019 Rkatsiteli from Blenheim Vineyards ($19, blenheimvineyards.com) and the 2017 Wildkat Rkatsiteli from Stinson Vineyards ($27.99, stinsonvineyards.com). The Blenheim bottling is a bit lighter in weight with a floral nose and flavors of apricots, roasted peaches, and tarragon. Stinson’s version utilizes skin contact, a process similar to how red wines are made, which extracts more flavor, color, and tannins (also known as “orange” wine). The result is a darker, heavier wine with aromas of honeysuckle, Asian pears, and dried apricots, and flavors of white peaches, pumpkin, and a slight bitterness on the finish reminiscent of grapefruit and orange peel.

Both of these wines benefit from being served a bit warmer, which allows the many aromas and flavors to fully express themselves.

“He’d been focusing on work his whole life and decided he was going to find a family and we just hit it off,” she says. “At first, I thought there was something terribly wrong with some guy willing to marry me with four kids. I made him go through counseling and I asked the counselor what was wrong, and she said ‘He just totally loves you and he is wonderful!’”

Carrubba says she has been overwhelmed by the tributes and messages she’s received, some from students who graduated 10 and 15 years ago. “Eric kept tabs on everyone from his childhood on, and he valued friendships and cherished and fostered them.” Breckoff was laid to rest on his 61st birthday.

Falcone, now at Michelin-starred Rose’s Luxury in Washington, D.C., says Breckoff “couldn’t have been more fair and accommodating to everyone around him. He had the patience of a saint. He knew when he could push people. His instruction absolutely helped me get to where I am today.”

Breckoff ’s wife, Patty Carrubba, remembers her husband’s zest for living life large, which included extensive traveling overseas to visit friends and family.

“We laughed every single day and I could’ve spent the next hundred years with him and never grown tired of him,” she says.

“We knew that every day is a gift and that’s totally how he lived his life—he didn’t count calories, but he did take care of himself, and he loved his family, his students.”

Breckoff worked as a commercial photographer for years, and decided in his mid-30s to attend Johnson & Wales’ culinary school in Charleston, South Carolina, and then in Rhode Island, earning an MBA. Prior to working at PVCC he taught culinary arts at Reynolds Community College in Richmond.

Carrubba was recently divorced and had four children when she met Breckoff at the Foods of All Nations cheese counter. “He was buying one slice of every piece of cheese for his students. I said ‘That’s a lot of cheese.’ He said he was a chef and I said ‘I love to cook!

How lucky your wife must be!’ He said he’d never been married, and I said I wasn’t married, and within two weeks we were engaged.”

Healthy adults between the ages of 18-65 with no current or past serious medical or psychiatric conditions are needed to create a Brain Library. Participants will be asked to complete interviews, cognitive assessments and a brain MRI. Study procedures will be completed over 1-2 visits and will last a total of 4-5 hours. Men and women with type 2 diabetes aged 18-60 needed for study on the effect of the drug empagliflozin (used to control blood sugar) on blood vessels. Study requires two 1-hour outpatient visits and two 7-hour admissions in UVA’s Clinical Research Unit. The study drug is taken for 12 weeks. So many flavors, so many possible combinations. And don’t we live in the right town to find them!

Charlottesville foodies—and we are all foodies now, whether we were raised by great cooks or just ordered something new from a food truck one day and had our minds blown—are some of the luckiest in the country.

“Charlottesville is on a very short list of best places to live if you want to make food an important part of your life,” says Matt Rohdie, proprietor with his wife Jen Downey, of Carpe Donuts, whose

organic, apple cider donuts—now available exclusively at the Charlottesville City Market—have been delighting kids and adults for 13 years now.

“It’s one of the hubs of the country for exploring the idea of artisanal ingredients, exploring the components of organic and local sourcing. It’s striking—not just the sheer number, but the range of foods that are available.”

“As long as I’ve been here, Charlottesville has been really creative,” says Patrick McClure, co-owner of Citizen Bowl.

“People with varied ideas come from all

over the place and put great restaurants together. [The scene] is constantly evolving and changing. Charlottesville is less about the trends than about a mode of constantly trying to bring the best versions of cuisines.”

Creative restauranteurs thrive here because they get so much encouragement. “Charlottesville inhabitants have really great palates,” McClure adds. “A lot of them have lived in large cities and wanted to come to a smaller city that has a slightly slower pace but still gives you all the great options of a big city, not just

in food and drink but in the arts and in sports. This town checks a lot of boxes, and being able to cater to a lot of people is one of its strong suits.”

Choices, yes, we have a few. Grab a snack, because you’re going to want one, and let’s look at some of the places old and new that make us such a foodie’s paradise, and at some of the people who make it one.

Citizen Bowl Co-owner Patrick McClure opened Citizen Bowl on the Downtown Mall in September of 2017, at a time when the bonds of citizenship and fraternity in Charlottesville had been tested and strengthened through tragedy. Citizen Bowl has thrived as an 11 to 3 lunch shop because of its fast service and its eight healthy, modifiable upon request— and delicious—salad or rice-based lunch bowls.

“I’ve lived in California and have definitely taken my influence from the various cuisines you find there,” says McClure, who’s been in the restaurant business 19 years and has also traveled to Thailand, “a country where you can’t go and not observe cooking.”

“I wanted to bring all those flavors into the same house, so that no matter which region you wanted to enjoy you could come to the Bowl shop. The Citizen Bowl has Mexican and Southwest influences. We also have a spicy Thai bowl, and we do several different Asian flavored items.”

“One of our focuses is on less heavy food; if you have a lighter meal, you’re not going to need that afternoon nap.”

Take the Goddess Bowl, which consists of “power greens,” feta, pickled red onions, basil, Kalamata olives, red cabbage, chickpeas, and goddess dressing. The shop’s namesake, signature dish is a Southweststyle chicken burrito without the wrap, full of warm brown rice, black beans, corn, house-grilled chicken, white cheese and more, all topped with jalapeno hot sauce and avocado. “A lot of people do tofu,” McClure notes, “or take out the cheese to make it vegan.”

“We are a 100 percent gluten and nutfree shop,” McClure wants it known.

“People with severe allergies don’t need to worry at all when they come to us.

We are happy to modify the bowls and cater to you. One of my best regulars is on the Keto diet. We also do a kids custom bowl.”

The word “Maru” is a Korean idiom for “a family room to eat and gather,” and you’re going to want to bring family or friends when you eat at Maru Korean Restaurant and Bar on the Downtown Mall—the better to swap and share. Maru serves modern takes on traditional Korean dishes like Buloggi Beef (thinly sliced ribeye), Bibimbap (a mixed bowl of rice and veggies with meat or tofu), and Deonjang Jjigae (fermented soybean paste stew).

Soondubu Jjigae is a soft tofu stew, a little saltier and more savory than Korean soup, made with house-made vegetable broth and a choice of beef, chicken or clams. It is served with rice and normally shared with one’s tablemates.

Maru’s beef is marinated overnight with soy sauce, honey, garlic, and concentrated plum juice. Traditional Korean cuisine uses a lot of ssamjang, a dipping sauce that is actually “a thick, spicy paste,” Kim says, “somewhere between juice and jam” and consisting, with some variations, of soybean and chile pastes, onion, and sugar.

Of course, of course Maru also serves kimchi. “There is a joke that if Koreans don’t recognize a vegetable they try to make kimchi out of it,” says Kay Kim, Maru co-owner along with chef and husband Steven. “In Korea people eat kimchi three-years-old,” she adds, but instead of burying its kimchi the traditional way, Maru serves theirs three days old, in three different ways: in a stew with tofu and vegetables, panko breaded with fried rice and cheese, and in a crispy pancake.

“They’re hand sized sandwiches,” Dougherty says. “They’re like a brick.”

For cocktail lovers, Superette has “perhaps the largest vermouth section in town,” Dougherty says, plus “what I call vermouthy things” like bitters, Amaro liqueur, etc. Local beers are available too.

All this makes Superette a good place to pick up a picnic lunch, but its drinks and goodies can also be enjoyed on the Brasserie Saison patio.

Walker opened his cafe in the 80s, sold it and was absent for five years, then came back in 1995 and has owned it ever since.

“Pretty much self-taught” as cook, he got his start as a dishwasher at the venerable The Virginian on the Corner.

“My mother was a waitress up there for a number of years, and she called me one night and said they need a dishwasher, so I went to work up there. I washed dishes for a while, and then I hung around with the cook and watched him, and one night the owner called me and said, ‘The cook is sick and won’t be in today.’ So, me and him cooked that night, and after that I was the cook for everything,” Walker chuckles.

“I’m old-fashioned,” he says, when asked what he enjoys eating. “I like a lot of stuff we grew up on—like meat, potatoes, gravy—that a lot of kids won’t eat today. Our most popular dishes are the fried chicken, burgers, ribs, pork chops, and fish.”

Besides loyal customers like Williams, Walker has loyal employees. “All my people have been with me a long time,” he says. “My mother worked here for years and years and my brother Arthur still works here. I have one cook, Waverly, that’s been with me 20-some years. I’ve been blessed, even though it’s hard times right now I’m still surviving. I get a lot of support from the community, which I appreciate. We get a lot of families coming and picking meals up to take them

home. I’ve gained a lot of new customers since the pandemic.”

Saison Superette “It takes a city to raise a Superette,” say the folks at Saison Superette, inviting customers to suggest products for their newly opened shop on the Mall. A

convenience store that sells both commonplace treats and more sophisticated grab-and-go alternatives like small batch pretzels, baguette sandwiches and excellent wine, “Saison Superette takes its influence from all over Europe but also locally,” says manager Reid Dougherty.

Yet it keeps its prices affordable.

Take the French style ham, Camembert, and butter combo, a Parisian classic served on an Albemarle Baking Company baguette. It’s a mere $5. Or the schnitzel sandwich, a fried pork cutlet on a brioche roll with house made sauerkraut and honey. Responding to requests for more hot food, Superette has also begun offering made-to-order sandwiches from its sister establishment on the Mall, Brasserie Saison.

“Even though the restaurant industry is going through a tough time, the experimentation it’s breeding is just amazing,” Patrick McClure says. “I like to eat my lunches light in my bowl shop so I can have a nice heavy, chef made dinner, and Charlottesville provides so many great chef-driven creative restaurants.”

Where does he like to go? “I love Tavola, Lampo, and Mas. Brasserie Saison also does a great job, and the C&O has been doing it so well for so long,” he says, sounding like he could go on a great deal longer. As for Dougherty, he has his own list, including the authentic as well as modernized Spanish offerings and “warm and welcoming” atmosphere at Little Star on West Main Street.

In these COVID times, Reid Dougherty sees a lot of people “recreating the restaurant experience at home,” perhaps picking up some elegant take-out from C&O or, in lieu of in-person advice and education from a sommelier, taking a Zoom class on wine from another popular local spot, the Italian bistro Tavola in Belmont.
