HELLO FROM RICK DAVIS, DEAN OF THE COLLEGE OF VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS Jazz 4 Justice™ is always one of the most meaningful nights of our performance year – the music, which represents some of America’s most important cultural contributions, is always outstanding, and the support generated for the legal causes and the jazz program is a perfect example of my favorite phrase: the arts create community. Congratulations to Ed, Jim, Darden, and all for not missing a beat in bringing “J4J” into the virtual realm this year!

HELLO FROM LINDA MONSON, DIRECTOR OF MASON’S SCHOOL OF MUSIC The Reva and Sid Dewberry Family School of Music is proud to support the annual Jazz4Justice™ concert with the partnership of the Legal Services of Northern Virginia (LSNV) and Mason Jazz Studies. This award-winning annual concert was established in 2001 by Virginia attorney Edward L. Weiner, Esq. and Founder of Mason Jazz Studies Jim Carroll. Thank you for joining us this evening and for your generous support of Jazz 4 Justice™ with proceeds to jointly benefit the Legal Services of

Northern Virginia and Mason Jazz Studies. Congratulations to all who made tonight’s stunning virtual Jazz 4 Justice™ event a reality!

HELLO FROM JIM CARROLL, FOUNDER, MASON JAZZ Dear Friends, A sincere welcome to George Mason University as we celebrate our 19th annual smokin’ Jazz 4 Justice™. Thanks, and thanks to our partners, Legal Services of Northern Virginia. Your service keeps us inspired. I believe it is more important than ever that we learn as much as possible about America’s great contribution to the arts: JAZZ! Please take a moment to read House Resolution 57 designating Jazz as a “rare and valuable national treasure.” As an educator, I feel a strong sense of purpose to pass on to my students their rightful cultural inheritance. Its value is beyond priceless. As a human being I feel a deep, deep sense of gratitude to those who came before and sacrificed so much so that we may have such a rich and abundant heritage.

Excerpt from friend Wynton Marsalis, The Road Ahead. “Jazz People come from all walks of life. The music is easily played in every environment from the subway to the park to a corner dive. It comes from salt of the earth people who created it to be down home and hospitable, humble, and rough and tumble. Jazz Music was built in the cacophonous turbulence of 1890’s New Orleans with the hardy constitution to lift us beyond troubled times. It is filled with a transformative positivity, if only because [of] the thought that a whole band could play all night without music, and each member could improvise new melodies on the harmonies of songs while organizing themselves as they made it up together. If you consider the opposition to what they were playing at the time (it was called the devil’s music, nonsense, ignorant, racket… and treated to all levels of racial insult from the sophomoric to the sophisticated), these musicians must have possessed an irrepressible spirit that inspired them and still inhabits this music, and can lift us as we grapple with our everyday struggles.” To think our students can participate in the community at this level and truly understand Wynton’s words, is indeed a gift.

In The Crisis of the Negro Intellectual, Harold Cruse is really speaking to every American. “Without a cultural identity that adequately defines itself, the American (paraphrase) cannot even identify with the nation as a whole. He is left in the limbo of social marginality, alienated and directionless on the landscape of America – in a variegated nation not yet decided on its own identity. The fact of the matter is that Americans, as a whole, are in doubt about their nationality – as well as their cultural identity.” America has produced some of the world’s greatest artists and musicians, but many are unknown to our citizens. I believe at this time, as we search for our national identity, it is more important than ever that we have the courage to recognize these artists. ~ Jim Carroll, 2020

ABOUT JAZZ 4 JUSTICE™ In 2001, Fairfax attorney Ed Weiner attended a student recital at George Mason University. He was impressed by the music but distressed by the small audience. As the President of the Fairfax Law Foundation (FLF), he saw an opportunity for a new partnership: the Sid and Reva Dewberry Family School of Music would provide the musical talent and the local Bar Association would provide the audience and sponsors. The goal would be to raise funds to support local Legal Aid, as well as the university’s jazz program. With the support of George Mason and FLF leadership, Jazz 4 Justice™ was born. Today, through partnerships with six universities and numerous local Bar Associations, 49 Jazz 4 Justice™ concerts have been held across the Commonwealth at George Mason University, Virginia Commonwealth University, Christopher Newport University, Northern Virginia Community College, the University of Virginia, and the University of Mary Washington.

These concerts have raised over $500,000 for jazz programs and an array of educational and charitable legal services benefiting Virginia’s local communities. Jazz 4 Justice™ has received awards from the American Bar Association and the Virginia State Bar. J4J is a 501(c)(3) notfor-profit organization. Visit us at www.jazz4justice.com. We are supported in part by a grant from the Virginia Law Foundation. The VLF’s mission is to promote, through philanthropy, the Rule of Law, access to justice, and lawrelated education.

Whereas, jazz has achieved preeminence throughout the world as an indigenous American music and art form, bringing to this country and the world a uniquely American musical synthesis and culture through the African-American experience and 1. makes evident to the world an outstanding artistic model of individual expression and democratic cooperation within the creative process, thus fulfilling the highest ideals and aspirations of our republic, 2. is a unifying force, bridging cultural, religious, ethnic and age differences in our diverse society, 3. is a true music of the people, finding its inspiration in the cultures and most personal experiences of the diverse peoples that constitute our Nation, 4. has evolved into a multifaceted art form which continues to birth and nurture new stylistic idioms and cultural fusions,

5. has had an historic, pervasive and continuing influence on other genres of music both here and abroad, and 6. has become a true international language adopted by musicians around the world as a music best able to express contemporary realities from a personal perspective; Whereas, this great American musical art form has not yet been properly recognized nor accorded the institutional status commensurate with its value and importance; Whereas, it is important for the youth of America to recognize and understand jazz as a significant part of their cultural and intellectual heritage; Whereas, in as much as there exists no effective national infrastructure to support and preserve jazz; Whereas, documentation and archival support required by such a great art form has yet to be systematically applied to the jazz field; and Whereas, it is now in the best interest of the national welfare and all of our citizens to preserve and celebrate this unique art form;

Now, therefore be it Resolved by the House of Representatives (the Senate concurring), that it is the sense of the Congress that jazz is hereby designated as a rare and valuable national American treasure to which we should devote our attention, support and resources to make certain it is preserved, understood and promulgated. Passed by the House of Representatives September 23, 1987 Passed by the Senate December 4, 1987

OPENING ADDRESS TO THE 1964 BERLIN JAZZ FESTIVAL Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. “God has wrought many things out of oppression. He has endowed his creatures with the capacity to create and from this capacity has flowed the sweet songs of sorrow and joy that have allowed man to cope with his environment and many different situations. Jazz speaks for life. The Blues tell the story of life’s difficulties, and if you think for a moment, you will realize that they take the hardest realities of life and put them into music, only to come out with some new hope or sense of triumph. This is triumphant music. Modern jazz has continued in this tradition, singing the songs of a more complicated urban existence. When life itself offers no order and meaning, the musician creates an order and meaning from the sounds of the earth which flow through his instrument. It is no wonder that so much of the search for identity among American Negroes was championed by Jazz musicians. Long

before the modern essayists and scholars wrote of racial identity as a problem for a multiracial world, musicians were returning to their roots to affirm that which was stirring within their souls. Much of the power of our Freedom Movement in the United States has come from this music. It has strengthened us with its sweet rhythms when courage began to fail. It has calmed us with its rich harmonies when spirits were down. And now, Jazz is exported to the world. For in the particular struggle of the Negro in America there is something akin to the universal struggle of modern man. Everybody has the Blues. Everybody longs for meaning. Everybody needs to love and be loved. Everybody needs to clap hands and be happy. Everybody longs for faith. In music, especially this broad category called Jazz, there is a stepping stone towards all of these.”

Celebrate your favorite Hylton Center memory with this exclusive anniversary edition by adding to an existing collection or buying the perfect gift for the arts lover in your life.
